I'm Transgender - and This Is What Sephora's New Beauty Class Means to Me
When Dominique came out as transgender in high school, she wanted to wear "bomb ass makeup." She was still learning how to apply foundation so it would cover up her dark spots and facial hair, which proved to be quite a challenge. "I would see other people who looked good, and I'd try to do my makeup like that, but it just would not look the same at all," she told POPSUGAR.
"When I was in Sephora, I never felt judged, or like anyone was looking at me in any type of way"
The teenager took refuge in the aisles of Sephora, where she'd often go to shop. "I was buying stuff that I had no idea how to use," she recalled. Even though she tried to mimic what she saw on YouTube tutorials, her end results were never the same. Dominique's main resource became Sephora's in-store consultants, who would teach her how to use different products. After that, her beauty game improved: "I started taking things home and applying makeup myself without feeling lost or confused." Unlike other spaces in her life, "When I was in Sephora, I never felt judged, or like anyone was looking at me in a specific type of way."
Now, Dominique works as a consultant herself in an NYC Sephora store, where she helps coach Bold Beauty, a free makeup lesson for members of the transgender community. The session held its first class in June, where Dominique assisted students who came to learn skills like color matching and using a moisture meter to help with hydration. (One effect of hormone therapy can be dry, thinning skin.)
But of course, like all good classes, they sometimes stray from the curriculum depending on individual students' interests. Once, an attendee zeroed in on a consultant's eyebrows. "They looked at her, and they were in love with her brows," Dominique remembered. "She kept saying, 'I want my brows like that. I want my brows like that.'" While the seminar was supposed to cover face makeup, the teachers took the opportunity to touch on arch defining. Days later, the same student returned to Sephora. "They came up to me and gave me a hug," she recalled. "It felt really good because not only did the student come back, but they also remembered. I hope Sephora becomes a safe space for them over time, just as it did for me."
While Dominique said classes aren't always emotional, she did say that it helps to build students' confidence. "When a lot of them first come in, you can see they have a little bit of a wall around them," she said. "Toward the end of the class, they were smiling, laughing, and taking pictures." Chalk it up to the transformative power of finding a safe space - and kickass brows.

The Full List of Characters Your Kids Can Meet and Interact With in Disney World's Toy Story Land
As soon as you step foot into Toy Story Land in Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios, you feel like you're in a completely different world - which was the intention of the Imagineers who created the park. The whole land is full of Andy's toys strewn about - K'nex, tinker toys, letter blocks, the bouncy Pixar ball, and, of course, some of the usual suspects, including Rex, Pizza Planet Aliens, Slinky, and more. However, there are a few of the characters we've grown to love over the last 20 plus years who are actually up and about and ready to meet you and your kiddos: Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, and the Green Army Men.
Unlike other characters throughout Disney World, the characters in Toy Story Land won't just be standing still in front of backdrops for photo ops - though it's possible they'll each take a turn throughout the day doing so. For the most part, however, Buzz, Woody, and Jessie will be out and about, strolling through the land, stopping for autographs and photos with guests in a more casual way.
The main event in my opinion, though? Sarge and the other Green Army Men. Andy has tons of them, so expect to see a bunch throughout your time in the park.
The first group, referred to as the "Green Army Patrol," will carry various objects - smaller versions of the Pixar balls that they use to play catch with the guests and oversize crayons - and plenty of them travel in packs, posing and saluting and chatting with whoever they walk past. Their main objectives are to keep an eye out for Andy's return and to make sure all of the guests are smiling and having fun. Pro tip: don't get caught not smiling by one of them - they'll challenge you to do push ups, jump through hoola hoops, or something else entirely so that by the end of the challenge, you can't help but smile. And even if you are smiling and laughing, you may look to them like someone they want to recruit, and could be challenged to a "new recruit activity."
Additionally, there's a special squad called the "Green Army Drummers," a three-piece drum corps that is highly skilled and parades through the land in intervals. Their drumming is mesmerizing, and everyone will stop in their tracks to watch - you won't be able to miss them!
How Having a (Much) Younger Sibling Changed My Life
When we were kids, my little sister Madison and I were the M&Ms - my parents' duo of daughters. We were the only kids among friends and family since my parents got married and had the two of us before age 30. As sisters we received a lot of attention, and we liked it that way. So it was quite a surprise when my mom and dad sat us down to let us know that baby number three was on the way; I was 10 years old. To say the least, my sister and I were a little perplexed at the thought of some new baby coming to town and turning our world upside down. Little did I know that this new baby would change my life forever.
As soon as my brother Mac was born, he completely stole my heart. Even at almost 11 years old, I created a bond with this tiny little baby that most people don't get to experience until they are much older. It's been 15 years since Mac was born, so I've learned a few things from having a young brother. Here's my case for spread-out siblings:
- You learn about responsibility early on. Having an infant in your life means watching your parents endlessly change diapers, make bottles, and wipe spit-up. Every once in awhile, I was allowed to do those things (under parental supervision), and I learned just how important it was to take care of this little life before I even hit middle school. Needless to say, I was an excellent babysitter.
- You watch a child grow up. I remember the first time Mac crawled, walked, and said my name. I remember how excited my family was when we discovered how fast of a reader he was in kindergarten. I'll never forget telling him bedtime stories before he went to sleep at night, and I especially won't forget when he told me about his first "girlfriend" when he started middle school. I'm watching this kid grow up into a man - well, more like a pubescent teen - but you get the picture. It's cool to think about the entirety of his life and how far he has come. I have been able to experience that.
- You stay in the know. Most 20-somethings don't know what the heck Minecraft is. I didn't, either, until my hip, tech-savvy brother told me about the video game. And that's not the first thing he's told me about. I work in a trend-driven editorial environment, and my brother still manages to find out things before me. Good thing he has no problem telling me that I actually don't know about anything cool at all.
- You teach your sibling life lessons. From a young age, my brother watched my sister and me overcome personal challenges, go to high school, and, worst of all, get our hearts broken. Nothing makes Mac more upset than a mean guy who hurts a girl's feelings. We joke that Mac is going to be the best husband ever when he grows up, but he really will be. Watching his sisters go through life's tribulations has taught him how he should act when he gets older.
- You create an incredible bond. I have no shame in telling people that one of my best friends is a 15-year-old boy. Now that I don't live with my family anymore, I feel this incredible guilt if I go too long without seeing my siblings. When the three of us are together, it's pretty much the best time ever. Even though Mac and I are aged so far apart, we have this assurance of trust and understanding between us. He looks up to me and knows he can tell me everything; I look to him for comic relief and a really good hug when I arrive back home.
So if that doesn't convince you that siblings with big age gaps are a good thing, I don't know what will. All I can say is that my family wouldn't be the same without Mac. In fact, our family without him is unimaginable. So thanks, Mom and Dad, for turning the M&Ms into the Three Musketeers.
Cars Fans, a New Lightning McQueen Show Is Coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios

I Just Found Out My 10-Year-Old Will Be Taking Sex Ed, and I Don't Know How to Feel
I recently found out that my daughter's school will be teaching sex ed in fifth grade. I have so many thoughts and feelings about this, and I feel like my head and heart are going to explode.
My initial reaction to the news was that my daughter isn't ready. If you know the characters George and Harold from Captain Underpants, her humor is right in line with theirs - very silly and immature potty humor. She bursts into laughter anytime someone says "Uranus," and always gets a laugh when she pranks my husband or myself with a whoopee cushion.
The truth is I like having an immature and naive little girl. I love the fact that she still has an imaginative mind and believes in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.
My second thought was that I'm not ready. When I look at my daughter, I still see my baby girl. I feel like it was just yesterday that I was giving her a bath in the kitchen sink. I blinked and she grew into a little girl. I blinked again and she became a big girl - and now, a tween. Ready or not, puberty is coming, and then I'll blink again and she'll be a young woman.
The truth is I like having an immature and naive little girl. I love the fact that she still has an imaginative mind and believes in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. I feel like most children are in a rush to grow up these days, and so many things about our society encourages that. It's refreshing to me to have a daughter like mine, and I don't want her to lose her incredible innocence, even though I know she eventually will. I want her to be a child forever, but I know she won't.
Coming from an Italian-Catholic family, I grew up with my mom telling me to wait to have sex until I was married - or else. With my own daughter, I'll let her know that waiting until she's married would be a wonderful gift to herself and her husband, but I don't want her to ever feel ashamed of wanting to have sex before marriage or feeling like she's sinning. Sex is a beautiful act of love, and someday, most likely before she finds wedded bliss, she'll want to experience it with someone she loves dearly.
I suppose I should thank the school for helping me face the hard reality that my little girl is growing up and giving me the push I need to have the birds and the bees talk with her. Of course it will be uncomfortable and awkward, but when is it not? I'm her mother and I want to be the one to have that talk with her before her teacher or friends do. As moms, we all know that going shopping with little kids in tow can be a recipe for disaster and destruction. When my twins were babies, just getting out of the house and into a store felt like a small victory. So, when we inevitably break something during our outings, I look at it as par for the course.
I figure that since these are stores that I shop in frequently, a broken and cheap toy doesn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things.
In retail, there's a name for the phenomenon of goods lost in this manner - shrinkage. One time, we got halfway down the street before I realized that one of the twins was holding an expensive bottle of Moroccan hair conditioner - apparently, he had nicked it from the shelves when I wasn't looking. We went right back to the store and turned the bottle in. Thankfully, the cashier thought it was cute. This is the response I mostly encountered while we were out, which probably made it easier for me to ignore those items that we were breaking or using - what we were doing wasn't stealing, we were just being adorable, right?

While my daughter's main items for pilfering are fruits and vegetables, now that my twins are older, they go for items they can actually break. The other day when my son was helping me shop for groceries, he threw a jar of peanut butter into the cart with so much force that it broke. Yep, I put it back and took a new one.
Although I never really gave any of these small items a second thought once I left the store, I know that my very virtuous husband would feel differently. He's the type of guy who makes sure to buy some small item at a gas station if he's using the bathroom. "They are not paying for us to use the toilet." If someone accidentally forgets to ring up one of his items, he'll point it out. So, I'm sure that if the kids broke something on his watch, he would probably pay for it.

And maybe that's the right thing. Recently, while at a large drugstore chain, my daughter kept playing with the Baby Bottle Pop in the candy display while I checked out. "No, you're not getting that. Put that back," I repeated, while frantically trying to complete our purchase. Behind us, a long line of impatient shoppers was growing. Then just as we were leaving, she got the bottle open and it hit the ground, sending a cloud of pink sugar all over the carpet. With the evidence enveloping us, I quickly ushered her out of the store. In the end, I didn't pick up the broken item and hand it to the cashier out of a bit of embarrassment over our destruction. And to be honest, my policy also depends on the size of a store - if we broke something in a small, independently owned business, I would be more likely to confess than if it was in a big box store that factors shrinkage into the cost of doing business.
In the future, I'll probably still not pay for small items that get broken, but I'll try to make sure we're more careful when we shop.

"Who would you prefer to have in the delivery room: your mother or me?"
My dad's question caught me off guard as I prepared to give birth in a few weeks. Mostly because I knew without a doubt that the only person who would be allowed within 30 feet of me as I labored was my husband (and my doctor and nurses of course).
The thought of my parents actually witnessing the most intimate moment of my adult life feels, well, wrong.
To be fair, my father was only trying to come up with a contingency plan in case my hubby couldn't make it from his office to the hospital in time. My last delivery had happened at lightening speed, so there was a real chance he would miss this one. My parents had pretty much camped out at my house just in case I needed to get to the hospital ASAP. Still, the thought of my parents actually witnessing the most intimate moment of my adult life feels, well, wrong.
I have friends whose parents and siblings were an integral part of their deliveries, all crowded into the room from the first contraction to the last push. It seems family-centered birth, where everyone from grandparents to soon-to-be big brothers and sisters participate, is a growing trend. But for whatever reason, despite the fact that I'm very close to my family, I'm just not feeling it. And the reason is pretty simple. Birth is raw and real. I will be in extreme pain, and I'll be on edge and emotional, and I don't want to have to tailor my reactions to these overwhelming feelings around who is in the room.
I want to be at liberty to concentrate on the sensations and be in the moment, not try to act strong in the face of a body-splitting contraction so as not to scare my older children. Or worry my parents think it's all too much for me. Or attempt not to add support to my sister's theory that childbirth is horrible and she should never attempt it.
The only person I can fully be myself around at a time like this is my husband, who took an oath to love me no matter what. Whether I poop during delivery, scream repeatedly that I can't do this anymore, sob in desperation, or fall on the floor and beg for mercy - I know he's got my back.
Back to my dad asking who I'd prefer to have in the delivery room - him or my mom. "Whatever you want," I answered him, knowing full well I was still going to make sure it was a special moment for just my husband and I. It's my birth. My moment. My way.

Splitting up is hard - add to that a young child and Hollywood fame that keeps you in the public eye, and the process becomes immensely more complicated.
Rachel Bilson didn't shy away from that fact when talking to PEOPLE about her life as a mom to 3-year-old daughter Briar Rose with ex-boyfriend Hayden Christensen, whom she dated for 10 years before they parted ways last September.
"No matter what I'm dealing with or how much it hurts or how much anger there is, it's just about her."
"We're still kind of trying to figure it out," she said of their "work-in-progress" coparenting dynamic. "It's a tricky one. And I don't know that there is any right way, necessarily."
The actress said that, at this point, they keep the explanations simple and put her needs first.
"We say Mommy has a house and Daddy has a house, but she's pretty young to have an in-depth conversation," Rachel said. "Most important for me is that Briar is OK and secure and stable. No matter what I'm dealing with or how much it hurts or how much anger there is, it's just about her."
As a child of divorce, she hopes to glean some parenting tips from her own mother: "My mom was a great mom," she said. "My parents went through a divorce, and she showed me nothing but love, so I was totally secure and OK when she did. Briar needs to feel loved from the people she loves the most. She has that love that is unconditional, so I think we're doing OK."
And despite any hardships with Hayden, she loves seeing elements in her daughter of both her and her ex: "She's strong-willed and pretty funny like me, and she's super athletic like her dad!"
Why I'm Going to Celebrate My Daughter on Her Younger Brother's First Birthday
Imagine a world where you're the center of your small universe. The attention is on you, the toys are for you, the food is for you, and all the love is for you. Then, imagine having immediately having to share everything with a wrinkly, noisy, drowsy little being. This is what I imagine it's like for an older sibling when a baby is brought home.
As much as we prepared our daughter for what was coming, there's no way her 3-and-a-half-year-old mind could process what her baby brother being born would mean. But now, as his first birthday approaches, I'm finding that my focus is actually mostly on her and how far she's come in the last year - as a little girl, as a big sister, and as a daughter. So, this year, as we celebrate my son's first year of life, I think it's also so important to celebrate my daughter's first year as a big sister.
A year in preschool-hood brings a lot of changes, and while she grew as a little lady this past year, she also grew as a big sister and has become truly established in this role.
My daughter was always excited about our growing family, and I think we did all the right things to prepare her for having a baby in the house. We took one last family trip just the three of us, where we put all the focus on her before her world (and ours) changed forever. We read books about being a big sister, played with friends who had young babies, and showed her how to hold and take care of her baby dolls, just like she would her baby brother. We worked on things she could learn to do by herself so she had them mastered by the time he arrived. She had fun making crafts for his nursery, helped set up the changing table, sifted through toys and books she wanted him to have that were hers when she was a baby, and helped pick out his car seat and double stroller. But no matter how excited she seemed, I was anxious about how she would feel when he was actually here. I couldn't quite explain that when babies first come out, they don't do much, aren't superfun, and it would take a few months before she might even be interested. But I didn't give her enough credit.
When she came to meet him in the hospital, it was a moment straight from heaven. She was so excited, sweet, quiet, and calm. She held him, snuggled him, and smiled the biggest smile while her eyes sparkled with pride that only comes from becoming a big sister. But while she loved him with every inch of her being and never once asked to give him back, she did struggle with the loss of mommy's undivided attention for things like dinner conversations and bedtime routines. So, she took it out on me. Whining, crying, and throwing fits became an almost daily thing for her. A friend of mine told me she thought she broke her sweet and perfect older daughter when they had their second child, and I began to wonder if I'd done the same.
But, my daughter powered through as we all got used to our new normal. She helped change his diapers, picked out his outfits, sang him lullabies, gently patted his back, and made funny faces to help him stop crying. When he became old enough to really interact with her, she couldn't stop telling us how much she loved him and how she could tell he loves her, too. She teaches him words and animal sounds, proudly boasts to friends and family that he can say the first letter of her name, and shares her toys (most of the time). The moment he begins to fuss, she's there with a reassuring "shh" and spoils him by giving him everything he wants at a moment's notice.
So, while his birthday party is planned to celebrate his first full year of life, I will really be celebrating both kids. One popular reaction I've received when sharing this is: "She has her own birthday, she needs to learn it's not all about her." But I don't plan to celebrate big sis on baby brother's birthday every year, but this year, it's a big deal to me. She asked me recently during their joint bath time - while being splashed in the face, having her hair grabbed, and being kicked in the tush - if I remembered what bath time was like before we had him. I laughed and said yes, I do remember, then asked her if she misses having the tub to herself. She instantly responded, "Nope! I like having him here!" and embraced him in a slippery hug. And that right there is why this year is not just about the birthday boy. This little girl needs to be celebrated, too. Her world changed because of a choice we made as parents, and she not only adapted, but thrived. And that's a big deal in my book.

Those who grew up as true Toys "R" Us kids are likely more than a little upset over the store's fate. In March, the nationwide store - which was in business since 1957 and was once the go-to stop for kids' toys and games before retailers like Target and online-shopping destinations like Amazon emerged - announced that it was going out of business. And now, after all the clearance sales over the past few months have emptied its shelves, Toys "R" Us has revealed that it will close all of its doors for good by this Friday, June 29.
