Oh My: E.L.F. Just Released a 100-Pan Eye Shadow Palette That Costs $15
Your "desert island" palette might include the pricey, 12-pan one you spent weeks lusting after and saving for, but allow us to suggest a new option. If you truly were trapped in a Castaway-type situation, you would probably want to bring along the new E.L.F. Endless Eyes 100 Color Palette ($15). That's because this drugstore bundle contains 100 pans - and costs a mere fraction of that number.
For about the same price as some single lipsticks, you can reap the rewards of this crazy shade range, which has everything from sandy neutrals to electric blues. The palette is even laid out to be user-friendly - the top colors are to be used as base, the middle pans are for building and blending, and the bottom rows are for topcoating.
Shimmer, matte, and smoky hues are all available, so the number of looks you could achieve using this bad boy is pretty insane - dare we say, endless.

What We Learned When We Took a (Better Than) Sex Ed Class With Jerrod Blandino
Let's be real: it's Jerrod Blandino's world, and we're all just living in it. As made evident by his beyond-fabulous makeup line and playful, quite often glitter-infested sneaky peeks, the Too Faced founder and creative director believes in living his best life. And for just three days, Jerrod will give us a peek inside of his world via NYC's Too Faced Better Than Sex Pop-Up Shop.
Of course, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to take a sex ed class with Jerrod, so we opted for our own sneaky peek of the event. For about 30 minutes on a Wednesday afternoon, Jerrod welcomed us into what will be his unofficial living room for the next three days. Of course, we found out from the expert himself exactly what you need to buy if you'll be in New York from Oct. 19 to 22.
But don't worry if you won't be in town - you can still get some Too Faced magic in your life. From his favorite mythical creature (Jerrod just took a side on a very heated debate) to what, exactly, makes Better Than Sex so damn covetable, we've curated everything you need to know to be your most fabulous self - straight from Mr. Blandino himself.

It's Time to Settle This Once and For All: Are These Frosted Cookies Trash or Amazing?
You know those soft frosted sugar cookies from the bakery section in the grocery store? They're delicious, right? Or maybe you think they're a sad excuse for cookies and wouldn't dare eat one voluntarily. It turns out the sugary cookies are very polarizing, and a viral tweet has thrown the internet into a serious debate.
its that time of year again when stores sell these bottom of the barrel, flavorless piece of shit things they have the nerve to call cookies http://pic.twitter.com/tTA8Jx1kBl
- t (@taysux) February 13, 2017
Twitter user taysux tweeted a photo of the cookies, saying, "It's that time of year again when stores sell these bottom of the barrel, flavorless piece of sh*t things they have the nerve to call cookies." With 14,000 "likes" and counting, it seems plenty of people agree with her extreme opinion of the dessert. Others, however, couldn't disagree more. "Delete this blasphemous tweet. They're the god of all cookies," one person tweeted in response. "These are a delicacy and should be treated as such," another tweeted.
The POPSUGAR office is just as torn as the internet on this highly controversial subject. "It's not even a good cookie, but you still eat it because it has a lot of nostalgic feelings. It's disgustingly delicious," POPSUGAR editor Victor Verdugo said. It's time to settle this debate once and for all: are these frosted sugar cookies from the grocery store disgusting or delicious?

In Case You Missed It, Riverdale's Lili Reinhart Has Crazy-Good SFX Makeup Skills
Today in unexpected news, actress Lili Reinhart is secretly a special-effects makeup genius, and we're totally in awe of her crazy-impressive skills.
When she's in character as Betty Cooper on the set of Riverdale, Lili's makeup is usually pretty minimal - a swipe of lip gloss here and a few strokes of mascara there. Needless to say, we barely even recognized the star when we scrolled way back on her Instagram to see the dramatic makeup looks she's been sharing with her followers since 2013.
From classic skulls and creepy dolls to more gory looks involving fake blood, Lili's SFX looks are like a treasure trove of Halloween inspiration. Read on to see some of her best work, and you just might find the Halloween costume idea you've been waiting for.
OMG, This Tarte Vault Is a Really, Really, Ridiculously Good Deal
If you're a makeup-lover, the holidays are a time of reaching for the stars, budget-wise. While your wish list might include more zeros than your paycheck does (fairy godmother, I want this 50-piece, $1,980 Tom Ford lipstick collection, and I want it now), it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, as Tarte's latest vault proves, budget beauty can be just as fabulous - and opulent.
Take, for instance, this Tartelette Vault ($100), which includes the Matte, In Bloom, and brand-new Toasted Palette, all for much less than the kits would retail separately.
If you're palette-obsessed, you probably live for the days you bring home another set of powders to add to your collection - well, imagine the delight in bringing home (or unwrapping) three! Two of the sets (Matte and In Bloom) are old favorites. Matte is somewhat of a "desert island" palette that features 12 versatile, creamy, and everyday shades.
In Bloom has the same amount of shades in similar hues but kicks things up a notch because these colors include shimmer, metallic, and darker options.
Since Toasted only just dropped earlier this month, perhaps you haven't had time to try it out just yet. But now is definitely the season for this collection of 12 burnt, fiery shades, as the shimmer options are perfect for holiday parties and feeling yourself this Fall.
Bought individually, these palettes would cost a total of $134. With this limited-edition vault, you can get things for a considerably cheaper price. We did the math, and with this deal, each shadow comes out to about $3. Of course, each of these kits will last you about two years, making the Tartelette Vault a pretty cost-effective option.
Looking fabulous for less than the price of your morning coffee? Happy holidays, indeed.
18 Fun and Sexy Halloween Costume Ideas to Steal From Alessandra Ambrosio
Alessandra Ambrosio takes a cue from fellow model Heidi Klum when it comes to Halloween. And though the Brazilian Victoria's Secret Angel doesn't bring her dress-up efforts all the way to Heidi levels, she takes the season seriously, sporting more than one look every year.
She's prepared to go all out with her look, including with her hair and makeup, showing up at parties and red carpets in the most elaborate outfits. But that doesn't mean she doesn't also know how to pull a total lazy-girl move, adding ears to simple pieces she found in her closet to pull together a DIY outfit. Either way, her costumes are always sexy and cute, never scary - maybe because her two kids, Anja Louise and Noah Phoenix, are on hand for the celebrations. Keep scrolling to see what we mean by taking a look back at Alessandra's best Halloween costumes through the years. They're sure to spark an idea of your own!
Step Aside, PSL - There's a New Fall-Ready Starbucks Latte in Town, and It's Incredible
Starbucks just released its newest Fall beverage - the Maple Pecan Latte - and, honestly, it gives the beloved PSL a run for its money. Before you accuse me of utter blasphemy against the sacred Pumpkin Spice Latte, hear me out. I admit to indulging in Starbucks's pumpkin-flavored latte from time to time when I'm feeling especially in the sweater-weather spirit, but the syrup is admittedly a tad too sweet and overwhelming at times. That's why the brand spankin' new Maple Pecan Latte (or shall I say MPL?) is my latest obsession.
I had a chance to try the MPL, which is the first maple-flavored drink the coffeehouse has released in US stores in 10 years, and man . . . it sure didn't disappoint! It offers warming, cozy notes of maple syrup, pecans, and brown butter, all of which complement the espresso flavors without overpowering it too much. The best part? It's topped with orange and yellow sugar granules for an added bit of texture (kind of like the Cascara Latte). Overall, sipping on the MPL basically made me feel like I was wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket while watching Hocus Pocus and sniffing a Fall-scented candle. And what's more Fall than that?!
In the famous words of those corny late-night infomercials: "But wait, there's more!" Starbucks is releasing the Maple Pecan Latte in tandem with a new array of Fall-themed cups!
They're just like those bright Spring ones that debuted earlier this year, except these come in warmer colors (teal, magenta, and orange, specifically) and are decorated with illustrations of an owl, a pie, and a pumpkin. How adorable. Can't wait to 'gram a photo of the MPL in one of these cuties.

There's a Reason This Wine Advent Calendar Totally Sold Out Last Year
I'm already a huge fan of Vinebox, a wine-by-the-glass subscription service that serves up vino in cool single-serve vials. So when I found out that the company is bringing back its "Twelve Nights of Wine" calendar again in 2017, I immediately hopped online to preorder my own. The glass-a-night advent calendar was so popular last year that it completely sold out within four weeks, and it's easy to see why.
Advent calendars are easily the best part of the holiday season. Free sh*t simply for waking up in the morning? Count me in, man. As a kid, I lived for the chocolate-filled advent calendars, giving me an excuse to have at least a tiny bit of dessert every day even when my parents were trying to teach me restraint. (An effort that clearly didn't work, considering that I write about cheesecake for a living now.) But now that I'm an adult, there's only one type of calendar that'll do as I count down to Christmas: the kind that's filled with booze.
Anyway, this is a great option for wine-lovers who can't get their hands on Aldi's popular, UK-exclusive advent calendar. The selection of 12 specially curated wines runs for $129 and comes in a special holiday box. Because of its popularity in 2016, Vinebox is offering the calendar on preorder starting Oct. 1 - which means you can set yourself up for a Winter of wine very soon.
End Bloat and Lose Weight by Drinking This Kitchen Staple
Chances are that you have a bottle of olive oil reserved for cooking, but drinking this kitchen staple can provide you with the same healthy benefits of this antioxidant-rich wonder - if not more. From a happier digestive system to banishing belly fat, here's why you should start and end every day with a tablespoon of olive oil.
- It helps fight breast cancer: A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine shows that women who followed a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil had a relatively lower risk of breast cancer than those women who followed a Mediterranean diet supplemented with mixed nuts or a diet that was lower in fat. If the Mediterranean diet is new to you, start with this guide of which foods to eat when adopting it into your lifestyle. Besides protecting against breast cancer, the diet has also been shown to slow the aging process and reduce the risk of stroke.
- It reduces the risk of heart disease: While it may seem counterintuitive that drinking olive oil can help protect the heart from disease, multiple studies confirm the claim to be true thanks to the MUFAs, or monounsaturated fats, olive oil contains - so much so that the FDA allows manufacturers to label olive oil with this health claim. The FDA recommends consuming just around two tablespoons per day to protect the heart. Just a note that olive oil should replace saturated fats in your diet rather than add to your current calorie intake.
- It encourages weight loss: The same good fats that protect the heart from disease can also aid you in achieving any weight-loss goals you may have. Not only have MUFAs been shown to help the body feel full, but they also target belly fat. Add olive oil to your list of flat-belly foods you should be eating.
- It helps with digestion: While there isn't a lot in the way of scientific research - just a few smaller studies - olive oil is widely (and successfully) used as a homeopathic remedy to help the digestive system and ease symptoms of constipation. Acting as a lubricant of sorts, drinking olive oil is said to help things move along better in the colon.
10 Things to Never Say to a Healthy Eater
All healthy eaters have one thing in common - they can get extremely cranky. It's not easy to refrain from consuming every carb in the cabinet after a long day of Greek yogurt and salads. Although we have great self-control ("no thanks" is a staple in our vocabulary), sometimes it's just downright impossible to keep our mouths shut when it comes to moronic comments. So keep these things in mind the next time you want to question a healthy eater. Remember, we are probably starving, hangry, and would kill for a donut. You've been warned. . . . Tread lightly.
I (Barely) Survived a Navy SEAL Workout - Here's What I Learned
My Navy SEAL workout started with a three-minute plank. And if that doesn't sound like a long time to you, get on the floor right now, set your timer, and see how it feels to hold your body up in perfect plank form for that long. It burns like hell. The next 90 minutes was a whirlwind of sprinting, squatting, swimming, and partner exercises that totally kicked my ass.
But I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel like I had accomplished something pretty remarkable after it was all said and done. Especially considering the fact that the workout was so intense that one girl got a bloody nose, one left crying, and another had to excuse herself so she could puke. Are you getting the picture now?
The two Navy SEALs who led our workout, which was hosted by Luminox, were some of the biggest, fittest dudes I've ever seen in my life. More importantly, though, they had such a strong presence that we couldn't help but feel intimidated; we could tell that we weren't about to get away with anything. After we survived the longest plank hold in the history of fitness, the SEALs had us lie down on the ground for some sit-ups. "Not so bad," we thought to ourselves. We were very wrong, indeed.
Each time we sat up, the entire group was required to shout - not say, shout - the number we were on. If we didn't shout the number loud enough to the SEALs' liking, we had to start back at their "favorite number." Zero. Their "favorite number" is zero. It took us several tries to count in unison together, which meant we were on the grass for quite some time and our abs were starting to hurt.
After that came several laps of running in pairs, and if we didn't stay shoulder-to-shoulder with our partner (while also holding onto our water bottles in our right hands), we had to go back to the start and try again. Then came sprints, burpees, thrusters with a 20-pound wooden log (which gave my workout partner a nasty splinter), pull-ups, and many, many push-ups. For good measure, we also did a squat challenge where your partner timed you for three minutes while you did as many squats as you possibly could without fainting. Then you would switch. The team with the most squats was granted with a three-minute rest. My badass partner and I won! (We spent the entirety of our rest period doubled over.)
To finish off the sweaty (read: miserable) workout session, we all jumped into the pool - fully clothed - and did these exercises where we would hold our breath, dive to the bottom, and push our waterproof Luminox watches across the pool floor for 10 seconds. Partners alternated until they reached the other end of the pool. This was about the time that the girl ran off to throw up her lunch. Then we did some final laps before we were allowed to hop in the hot tub and collapse out of exhaustion and beg for wine. Phew.
From the very beginning, the SEALs kept telling us that a group is only as fast as its slowest person. In many of the exercises, we had to start over again and again, because we simply weren't keeping an eye on our teammates or participating enough. Sure, it was frustrating in the moment, and it was something we initially scoffed at. But as the workout went on and we started to lose our gumption (and our patience), it was clear we all desperately needed each other's support.
As someone who loves all types of fitness - from solo weightlifting to choreographed hip-hop dance - this was a much-needed reminder that fitness is much more fun and effective when you're suffering alongside an encouraging group of people. And sometimes the only way to reach the finish line is by eliciting the help of the folks around you, as well as offering it when your comrades need it the most.
Another thing the SEALs kept telling us was that you should always aim for higher than what you're going for. For example, if you're trying to do a set of 10 push-ups, in your mind tell yourself you're going for 12. This little mental trick will make it seem that much easier when you accomplish 10; plus, you might surprise yourself and make it all the way to 12. This tip stayed with me for days after the workout ended, and when I incorporated it into my weightlifting sessions, I was surprised to see that I could do much more than I previously expected from myself. Sometimes you don't really know how much you're capable of doing until you actually push yourself to do it.
Finally, I learned that you can do a whole lot with just your bodyweight. I rarely do strength-training workouts that just use bodyweight anymore, since my interests lie in weightlifting, but I, surprisingly, woke up painfully sore the next morning. And save for one movement, the entire workout was done with just our bodyweight, which told me that you can still get pretty far in your fitness goals if you don't have access to weights or other similar equipment. Besides, if you're ever in need of a heavy weight or a kettlebell substitute, just pick up a really heavy log.

Sally Hansen's New DIY Chrome Nail Polish Kits Are Damn Gorgeous
I am not going to point fingers, but I've asked some of the top nail art salons in NYC for mirror nails over the past six months - and no one will give them to me! Pros at these spots told me the reflective powder topcoat chips easily, so they had to stop offering it. Customers complained.
So when I heard Sally Hansen was launching four Chrome DIY nail art kits featuring a similar look, I was pumped. I could get my futuristic manicure easily and at home, goddammit. It seemed too good to be true. And after seeing the Chrome nail look applied IRL at an editor's preview, I can confirm these sets are as cool as they sound.
"The chrome trend was first seen on social media and has since exploded but was previously only achieved with UV light and a lengthy and costly application process," Kristi Sloe, VP of global product development at Sally Hansen, told POPSUGAR. "Salon Chrome democratizes the trend so that the at-home consumer can achieve the same look themselves and have fun doing it."
There are five Chrome kit colors: Rose Gold (pinky gold), Peacock (purple-blue metallic), Holographic (iridescent metallic), Gunmetal (reflective charcoal), and Mermaid (green-purple hybrid). Out of the bunch, I'd say Gunmetal is the closest the mirror look I've been chasing after. (And it will be mine soon!)
The colored Chrome kits (Rose Gold, Peacock, Gunmetal, and Mermaid) are each $20 and come with the shimmery colored powder, a powder applicator, and a clear coat that seals in the chrome. That said, you need to supply your own base nail polish color and topcoat. These will be available at Target and Target.com, where Sally Hansen products are sold. Ulta store and Ulta.com are getting an exclusive kit, the Holographic one. It is $30 and also comes with the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel polish in Black-y O and the Miracle Gel topcoat. Everything drops Target mid-August and at Ulta on October 1.
"I really love Sally Hansen Salon Chrome in Mermaid and Peacock," said Madeline Poole, a Sally Hansen ambassador and top nail artist. "These more jewel-toned blue and green shades have the most impactful chrome effect. They also pick up really well on camera!"
While the Chrome kits are fairly easy to use - and you can see for yourself ahead in our exclusive video featuring Hannah Lee - Madeline has some advice. "It's important to use light pressure when buffing the powder into the nail," she explained. "You want to begin when the base color is still slightly tacky, but as a precaution gently buff so as not to dent the surface of the polish."
And if you desire to create chic nail art, Madeline suggests marking off half the nail with tape before painting. This will create a negative-space look. "Place a piece of masking tape across the width of your nail and then paint the tip of the nail following the Salon Chrome process," she noted.
Luckily, we have a sneak peek at every color plus an exclusive video from a nail blogger on how to use them.
99 Halloween Costumes From Reddit That Are Terrifyingly Gorgeous
We consider ourselves among the Halloween makeup experts, but even we have to admit that these Reddit users have our skills beat. Some of these makeup creations have us cringing in terror (especially the demented clown), and it's all done with just eye shadows, body paint, false lashes, and incredible talent. This is the creepiest makeup artistry we've ever seen, but we're already getting renewed inspiration for our costume this year.
I Found the Perfect Mascara For Anyone Scared to Use an Eyelash Curler
I am incapable of using an eyelash curler. Believe me, I've tried: I curled my eyelashes every day for an entire year to try to master the skill, and I still never got it right. I know my lashes can be curled. I've seen other people do it, and I know what a difference it makes. But ultimately, my lack of fine motor skills overcame my desire for perfect lashes, and I gave up.
I am lucky to have long lashes that show a lot of promise. Because they are fairly straight, the length isn't as noticeable when my lashes are sticking straight out. But coax them upward and suddenly they are the kind of lashes people notice.
However, without an eyelash curler, I need my mascara to do all of the curling, lengthening, and separating for me while also not looking clumpy - which is a tall order. Over the years, I have tried mascara after mascara that friends and POPSUGAR editors have raved about, only to be disappointed. I ask near-strangers what magical mascara they are wearing, but the magic never works on me.
Then I tried Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara ($23) and I knew immediately that my search was over. Read on to learn why I'm obsessed with Stila Huge.

A Surgeon Found 17 Contact Lenses in a Patient's Eye - Then Things Got Worse
A 67-year-old patient was about to undergo cataract surgery when her surgeon discovered a "blueish mass" in her eye. As the surgeon and her colleagues injected anesthesia into the patient's eye, they removed the object - only to find that it was actually a clump of 17 contact lenses stuck together. As they inspected further, they were surprised to find an additional 10 contact lenses in the woman's eye.
The shocking discovery occurred last year; however, UK-based ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria is now going public with the story in the hopes that it will encourage people to be more diligent about their eye care. In an interview with Optometry Today, Morjaria said, "None of us have ever seen this before. We were really surprised that the patient didn't notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there."
Due to the possible presence of bacteria in the eye, the patient would have been at risk of serious and permanent eye damage if they would have proceeded with the surgery. As a result, the procedure was postponed. Upon speaking with her afterwards, Morjaria learned that the patient had been wearing monthly disposable lenses for 35 years and apparently didn't realize she was inserting new contacts over old ones that had not been removed.
When the patient heard the news, she was "shocked." Morjaria said, "When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses, she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable. She thought her previous discomfort was just part of old age and dry eye."
Though this particular incident is rare and scary, the team at Solihull Hospital hopes it will encourage people to maintain regular optometrist appointments, which would have allowed a doctor to catch a problem like this before it became so severe. Contact lenses are incredibly common and fairly easy to use, but accidents happen.

Hey Girl, You Can Now Get an ABH Contour Kit For Super Cheap at Ulta
If you're a contour connoisseur, prepare to make it rain all over Ulta - but just a little bit. That's because the megaretailer is having a super sale on Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kits. We're talking discounts of upward of 50 percent on the brand's ever-popular cream and powder sculpting palettes.
Before yesterday, an ABH Contour Kit would set you back $40. But now, you can scoop one up for $20 - yes, this is like the beauty junkie's version of a happy hour. But instead of downing a few margs that will inevitably leave you waking up with a dull red face, you can throw those dollars toward a set that will lend you impossibly high, glimmering cheekbones.
And, as stated above, if you're more of a cream girl, you can also save on the brand's Contour Cream Kit ($20). Perhaps you are a special type of extra and love layering powder over cream for an intense-as-heck look. In that case, you do you and get both - for the price of one.
To recap, these kits include six shades in total: half for contouring, half for highlighting. There are three different hues (Light to Medium, Medium to Tan, Tan to Deep), which are all super blendable.
There's no word yet on how long these deals will last (or how soon things will sell out!), so we recommend getting your tuchus to a computer or an IRL Ulta store to reap the rewards of a flawless face.

20 Beautiful Bronde Color Ideas to Inspire Your Fall-Weather Makeover
While beauty girls have many reasons to love Fall, one of our favorites is that we get to use the season as an excuse to switch up our style. We pull our best vampy lipsticks out of our stashes, all things pumpkin spice are added to our routines, and we add a bit more brooding color to our hair. If you're not quite brave enough to try out smoky lilac strands, consider testing out the more natural - but equally beautiful - dye trend known as bronde hair.
"Bronde hair color is the perfect marriage of blond and brown hair," said Lauren E. Hack, colorist and cofounder of Lauren+Vanessa salon in New York City. The style is typically achieved using balayage, in which color is "swept" on to the hair strand by strand. This melds the hues together, creating a more natural, sun-kissed effect that looks neither definitively blond nor brunette. While it can also be achieved using traditional foils, Hack prefers to combine both techniques to make the ends of her clients' hair look a bit lighter.
While it's usually women with brown- or black-toned hair who opt to test-drive the bronde trend, blondes love it too - it adds dimension to "tired-looking" color. "It's great for the woman who is low-maintenance," Hack added.
If you're uncertain whether this color trend is ideal for you, keep your complexion in mind. "This hair color is flattering on most women, but especially those with olive skin or light beige skin," said Hack, who pointed to Jennifer Lopez as a shining example of gorgeous bronde hair.
Bronde isn't just a hot trend or an excellent option for transitioning your color during the colder months (though it is both!). After you hit up the salon and get this dye job, a mere glance in the mirror at your new style will make you feel ready to conquer the Fall season. Keep reading for some of our favorite examples of bronde hair from Instagram.

At What Age Do Kids Really Start Remembering Things?
When I was 5 years old, I was a daredevil. I loved climbing on roofs, hanging from tree branches, and doing flips off the diving board. But my fearless spirit finally got the best of me one December afternoon. Days before I was set to twirl my baton in a Christmas parade, I climbed up a woodpile that was stacked taller than me, maybe six feet high. I attempted to jump onto a trampoline below, but I missed it by a long shot. When I came crashing down, my left arm snapped like a twig. I still have vivid memories of that day. The day I broke my first bone. The ride to the hospital was awful. My mom held me while I cried. She'd draped a towel over my arm and warned me not to look, but I was very persistent. When she gave in and lifted the towel, I screeched loudly and passed out. My tiny little arm had taken on the abnormal shape of a "W."
Even though this traumatic memory sticks out above the rest, it's not all I remember from age 5. I can recall the names of my three best friends: Tyanna, Scarlett, and Rebecca. I only knew them for a couple years, but I can still see their faces today. While there are plenty of other memories I retained from a very young age, I have very few from my toddler and preschool years. The foggy details I do remember are too faint to put into words. They're more of an image or a situation. As the mother of a 3-year-old boy, I watch my son and wonder what will stick out in his mind. Perhaps our nightly routine: dinner, bath, playtime, bedtime books, and nighttime lullabies. Or maybe spending time at our rented beach house in the Fall months - splashing in the water and playing in the sand. I'm also curious if there's anything I can do to help him remember things in the long run. I sought out an expert to get some answers: Dr. Renee Spencer, a licensed counselor with a doctorate in counseling psychology. Dr. Spencer isn't just educated on the subject, she also works with kids every day, in school and at her private practice. She dropped some major knowledge on the subject.
Remembering Things Before Age 3
There is a lot we still don't know about memory and early brain development, but recent studies have revealed new information. Studies performed on infants have helped researchers better understand the development of declarative or explicit (long-term) memory in infants. Mothers, you will be happy to know that the one thing they may never forget is the sound of your voice.
"One of the explicit declarative memories that they've been able to find in young infants is remembering their mother's voice. Young babies were able to respond through their emotions," Dr. Spencer explained. "As soon as their mother spoke, they would instantly smile or soothe themselves. We don't know how long infants have been able to pick up on their mother's voice in utero, but it's the first place where their memory absorbs information."
Those painful nine months you spent carrying them, feeding them, and growing them are more personal than ever. It's your first chance to talk to them.
Dr. Spencer also explained the difference between semantic memory and declarative. She said infants who cry for their mothers to nurse them are using semantic/survival memory (unconscious), not declarative memory, which is conscious (seeing and knowing).
The Toddler and Preschool Years
Dr. Spencer encourages repetition and routine for all children, but especially ones age 3-7. "Recall and repetition will make things go into long term and stay because it becomes more of a categorized and organized piece of data that is stored into your memory," she said. "The more you start to recall something, the easier it will be to pull it back up. Kids who have parents who talk to them are able to pick up on memory skills early on."
Dr. Spencer also went on to explain how important early memory and brain development are before the age of 5. "The brain is so pliable while they're little that it's the best time to teach them things because they can absorb it all. The more you repeat, the more they repeat," she explained.
I'm amazed when my son memorizes a book after reading it once or twice. But I now realize that our nightly bedtime routine is the reason for that, and it could be contributing to his long-term memory.
Documenting Events and Photos Are Stepping Stones
Parents, be sure to take lots of photos. That silly picture of them with Goofy might help jog their memory as an adult and give them a flashback of a day they thought they'd lost forever.
"They are much more inclined to remember things from a younger age by seeing something like a picture or visualization," Dr. Spencer said.
Traumatic or Painful Memories Stick Out the Most
As mentioned in my story above, I can recall every detail of the day I broke my arm. What I can't recall is my birthday party that year, that Christmas, or the family vacation. Dr. Spencer explains that at a younger age (3-7), our good memories seem to take a backseat to our bad.
"You can remember either/or. We're more inclined to remember something that was traumatic because it hurt us," Dr. Spencer said. "We want to remember what we did that caused us pain versus something exciting we experienced. We try to prevent things from happening, so we remember the things that cause us hurt in order to prevent it from happening again."
Two years after my first broken bone, I broke the same arm again. I wish I'd learned more from my first traumatic experience.
Development of the Hippocampus
"As children become school-aged (7-10) and older, there is much more development of the hippocampus (responsible for the processing of long-term memory and emotional responses) and the ability for recall," Dr. Spencer explained. "The child begins to organize and store information more effectively; that's when we sequence."
This must be why I have a plethora of memories from third grade and beyond. It must also be why my friend Kimmy and I can still repeat every line of a ridiculous song we wrote about our elementary school crushes Brian and Drew. Wonder what they look like all these years later?
It makes me a little sad to think that my son might not remember his first trip to Disney World or seeing that wild moose in Alaska. But one day when he's grown, I'll be able to say, "Before you were 3, you rode on 32 airplanes, danced on stage in front of 1,000 strangers, visited nine different states, and even took on the 12-foot-high zip line at Shipwreck Island Water Park. You are a force to be reckoned with." That's gotta score him a few cool points.
4 Things You Need to Know Before You Run Outside
Beautiful scenery, a higher calorie burn, and a toned lower body are just a few things to look forward to when you start running outside. But if you don't play it safe, then you can just as easily be looking at a slew of new injuries, frustrations, and unmet expectations. Stay safe and make sure that your first outdoor runs are your best yet with these tips.
No. 1: Pick the Road More Traveled
When starting out, the last thing you want to worry about is getting lost. Before even lacing up your sneakers, do some research: ask friends where they like to run, use online running forums to find popular routes, and check to see if your park has designated trails. The more popular and visible the trail, the better. Popular routes tend to have clearly defined pathways, they are often well-lit, and there's safety in numbers by choosing a trail that's frequented by fellow runners. If you're feeling nervous, then opt to walk the route first, or ask a friend to go running with you. Wherever your run takes you, make sure to follow these basic running tips that will help keep you safe and out of harm's way.
No. 2: Start Slow (and Soft)
Aside from having to deal with what nature throws at you, running without the momentum of a treadmill is also more taxing on the body. The muscles have to work harder to push the body forward, and the joints take more of a beating from running on uneven (and harder) terrain. When you first begin running outdoors, don't expect - or even challenge yourself - to run as fast or as long as you do on a treadmill. Give your body time to adjust by gradually replacing treadmill runs with some that are outdoors, and keep your first handful of runs on the shorter side. You can pick up the pace and add mileage as your body acclimates. To make the transition easier on your joints and avoid injury, start by running on softer surfaces like grass, a track, or a wooded trail.
No. 3: There's More to It Than Just Running
At its simplest, running is about one foot in front of the other, but your regimen should include more than just runs. Running on a treadmill allows for convenient notifications to warm up and cool down - not something that happens when you're outside. Being away from the gym also means there are fewer visual reminders to stretch and strength train, which are important components of any runner's routine. Prevent injury by always warming up the muscles with a brisk five-minute walk, and remember to cool down by slowly decreasing your pace and following that up with some running-specific stretches. Lastly, don't forget to strength train! Since the body works harder when running outside, the muscles and joints need to be able to handle the challenge to ward off any overuse injuries. Check out these essential strength-training moves for runners.
No. 4: Sometimes You Just Need Support
If you've followed all of the previous advice, but still find yourself struggling with pain or overuse injuries, it doesn't hurt to see a sports doctor, running coach, or physical therapist to have your running gait checked. It wasn't until I saw a PT that I realized I severely overpronate when I run. Since seeing a doctor, I've switched to more stable running shoes and have also learned how to tape up the arches of my foot for longer runs where I need extra support. By having your own gait analyzed, you will be able to figure out what kind of runner you naturally are and learn what tweaks you can make to improve your form and time on the road.
Can Strength Training Reduce Belly Fat? A Scientist Weighs In
While we know that cardio is an excellent way to burn fat, we wanted to know how working with weights can contribute to a whittled middle and washboard abs. So how can we blast belly fat with strength training?
Nicole Aurigemma, physiologist at the Penn State Muscle Biology Lab, told us not only how to burn more calories during a workout (in part by doing some weight training first), but she also gave POPSUGAR insight into how we can flatten our stomachs with some deadlifting, leg presses (crazy, right?), and general resistance training.
Here are four major benefits that come with working with weights and training with some resistance!
- More resistance training, more fat burning. "It has been shown that energy expenditure, as well as fat oxidation, increases after multiple sets of resistance exercise, particularly when larger muscle masses are exercised," said Nicole (larger muscle groups are located in the legs - think glutes, quads, etc!). "Think leg press versus chest press," she said. Who knew that a flat belly starts with the legs?
- Your body is burning more calories. "Post-exercise, your body is using up more of its fuel stores, therefore burning more calories," she explained. So even after you're done with a sweat-sesh in the weight room, your body is burning, burning, burning up the calories!
- Your body uses fat while you're resting, too. "Since resistance exercise increases post-exercise fat oxidation," (fat oxidation = your body breaking down fat into energy) "your body is using more fat. This is very favorable for weight loss." Because, when you say you want to lose weight, you really want to be losing fat and gaining metabolism-boosting muscles.
- You'll see results quickly. Nicole noted that the fat oxidation and fat loss happen quickly, "even after just one gym session." She told POPSUGAR that "increased energy expenditure [burning calories] and fat oxidation [burning fat] last at least 24 hours after [even one session of] exercise, so imagine how much fat you could be using and calories you'll be burning if you have regimented resistance training!"

Incinerate Fat and Build Muscle With This Kickass Printable Workout
So let's get this straight, more fat burning, more calorie burning, burning even when you're resting . . . and fast results? Let's grab those weights!
Before you get burnin', a couple things to keep in mind: "You could actually gain a little muscle mass before you start to lose weight," said Nicole, "but this doesn't mean you aren't losing fat mass." She also said it's important to note that "You could lift all you want, but if you eat crap, you won't see results." So while a flat belly is made in the weight room, it's also made in the kitchen. A Gay Cafe Owner Had the Perfect Facebook Response to a Homophobic Couple
We've updated this story with comments from Horne.
Homophobia, despite progress toward equality, unfortunately remains alive and rampant. A gay cafe owner in Cairns, Australia, named Jay Horne posted his tale of prejudice (and how gracefully he handled it) on Facebook, and it's since gone viral.
🤔 I'm curious... 🤔
Do you think you are going to turn gay (if you're not already) if you eat and drink at a gay owned...
Posted by Jay Horne on Thursday, March 16, 2017
In the post shared on March 16, Horne explains that a couple who frequent his restaurant, Paradiso Cairns, recently decided not to return after discovering it was gay owned and operated. "Do you think you are going to turn gay (if you're not already) if you eat and drink at a gay owned and operated cafe?" Horne hilariously asked in the post.
"One of our regular 'straight' couples have stopped frequenting our cafe because we are gay owned and operated and they had no idea," he went on to detail. "All I can say is . . . their loss!"
POPSUGAR spoke to Horne about the experience and community response via Facebook messenger. "I don't want the world to think that Cairns is a homophobic city, as it's definitely not," Horne said. "I have been living here for eight years and proudly promote the Cairns region as an LGBT hot spot to both national and international travelers."
Horne told us that he's witnessed an outpouring of support from the community in Cairns following his post. "One gentleman came in on Saturday who was so thankful that he broke down in tears," Horne wrote. "Another couple who sat in the cafe in hope the old regulars would walk by so they could confront them. I know I don't stand alone."
He also added that using his profile to fight homophobia is important. "Cairns has one of the highest if not the highest youth suicide rate in Australia, which is often related to fear of not being accepted in the community as being gay," Horne said. "If I have helped one person or saved one person from taking their own life through sharing my experience, I am happy [sic]."
While incidents like this are widely reported in the United States, Horne's experience demonstrates that homophobia is an international issue. It's also an applaudable instance of responding to intolerance with dignity and a dash of humor.
Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington Both Star in D&G's New Fragrance Campaign and Oh My God
As we approach the first weekend without a new episode of Game of Thrones, Dolce & Gabbana has just the remedy to quell our appetite for more. Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington, whose characters Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow sealed their romance in one of the most talked-about scenes of the season seven finale, unite once again in a campaign for The One fragrances. It's almost too much to handle.
Emilia, face of The One Eau de Toilette, and Kit, face of The One for Men ($67), both have commercials where they party in the streets alongside locals in Naples, Italy. Captured by filmmaker Matteo Garrone, they both look stunning dressed to the nines. There's dancing. There's spaghetti. It's festive, playful, and gives even more reason to want to hang out with these two IRL close friends. While the charismatic duo don't share screen time together in this campaign (sob), our fingers are crossed that Dolce & Gabbana has more in store.
While The One for Men has been a D&G classic since 2008, the Eau de Toilette is a brand new offering for Sept. 2017. Expect a sensual scent made up of top notes madonna lily, bergamot, and white peach with other notes of orange blossom and vanilla.
Ahead, see both of their campaign photos, videos, and behind-the-scenes goodness.
This Beauty Influencer Looks SO Much Like Rihanna, You'll Scream
When Patrick Starrr first teased his Fenty Beauty makeup tutorial, the behind the scenes footage appeared to feature none other than Rihanna herself. Considering Patrick has done a tutorial video with Kim Kardashian for KKW Beauty, we didn't think that was totally impossible. But, upon closer inspection, we realized it wasn't Rihanna but instead a model who bears an uncanny resemblance to the singer. Like, they could actually be TWINS.
The model is beauty influencer Andele Lara, founder of the site Grow & Glow. Scrolling down her feed, you'll find countless images that'll make you do a double take. It helps that she wears a lot of similar beauty looks as Rihanna, from blunt bangs to dreadlocks to Rihanna's signature red lips. Even fans who saw Patrick's BTS snaps were tricked.
"I've never had a career of being a 'Rihanna Look Alike' - Yes, there is a little resemblance to Rihanna but NO; I am NOT a Rihanna lookalike," Andele wrote on her website. That being said, we think she could totally pull it off.
Ahead, see some photo (and video!) proof of her jaw-dropping similarities to Rihanna.
This Step-by-Step Will Get You La Loteria's La Sirena's Makeup For Halloween
If you grew up playing La Loteria with your family, then you probably admired La Sirena on the deck of cards - was she not everyone's favorite character? With Halloween mere days away, stop racking your brain for an original costume no one else will have on Oct. 31: La Sirena is the DIY you need to re-create. Shop for a red mermaid tail and a buff crop top, and follow this step-by-step makeup how-to from Jackie Gomez, a makeup artist and the head of the Make Up For Ever Academy in New York City.
- If you want your makeup to stay put all night (through drinks, dancing, and maybe even a club's heat), you need to prime - Jackie suggests the Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Primer ($37). Then, apply liquid foundation all over your skin using a fluffy brush, starting at the center of your face and moving outward, blending in circular motions.
- Using your ring finger, dab a small amount of concealer under your eyes to hide dark circles, gently blending out by tapping.
- Smile in the mirror and apply a powder blush in a pink shade (like Make Up For Ever HD Blush in 210 or 330 ($26 each)) right on the apples of your cheeks.
- Mist your face with a setting spray to create a dewy look - that "I just got out of the water" glow. Jackie likes the Make Up For Ever Spray Mist & Fix Setting Spray ($30).
- To make your features pop, apply a highlighter to the bridge of your nose, brow bones, and Cupid's bow.
- For those mermaid eyes, use a bright green eyeliner. "Line your top lash lines from inner to outer corner of the eye to define your eyes and lashes," Jackie said. "Then, follow the same technique on your lower lashes and waterline." She likes the Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner in I34 ($21); we suggest the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Freak ($20).
- Blend a metallic-finish emerald-green eye shadow on your lid from lash line to crease. "For a smoky effect, blend the same color along the lower lash line, and enhance with a tad of dark gray or black eye shadow in the outer corners, blending into the green to eliminate any harsh lines," Jackie said.
- Curl your lashes and apply three coats of black volumizing mascara for a false-lash effect.
- La Sirena's eyebrows are well-defined and dark. "Apply an eyebrow powder on your brows using an angled brush and light brush strokes" until they are full. Jackie likes the Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Brow Palette ($42) because you can mix the shades to get just the right hue to match your hair color.
- "To make your lips pop like La Sirena's, first, line the lips with a red waterproof pencil (like Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil in 8C ($19)) to ensure a long-lasting wear," Jackie said. Then, apply a deep brick red lipstick straight from the tube.

Forget About the Box's Instructions; Try Cooking Your Frozen Pizza Like This
If frozen pizza turns out funky for you (burnt spots, soggy bits, general mediocre outcomes), here's a tip from the internet. Forget about the back-of-the-box instructions, and instead, cook your frozen pizza like this guy. Reddit user numbahtwelve says to fully thaw the pizza and crank your oven to the hottest temperature it will go (not the broil setting). Then, cook the pizza on the rack of the oven (unless you own a pizza stone or cast-iron skillet) for five to eight minutes or until the crust crisps and cheese bubbles.
His logic? Restaurants and pizza chains cook the 'za on pizza stones in commercial ovens that are set to 700°F-1000°F. This little hack emulates the professional method without the use of fancy equipment. Now, if you want to be truly fancy, brush the crust with olive oil and sprinkle crushed garlic or garlic powder on it, before baking. Mmm . . . seems like a simple yet reliable hack to try for the next frozen pizza night.
