7 Totally Valid Reasons to Consider Not Having Bridesmaids on Your Big Day

When my now-husband and I were just a recently engaged couple, we started our planning process by hashing out how we'd each describe our ideal wedding day. Words like "laid-back" and "modern" came up a lot (can you tell we're millennials?), and we agreed that we both wanted the experience to be as stress-free as possible. For us, it was clear that the tradition of including bridesmaids and groomsmen wouldn't fit into the picture we envisioned.

Some friends and family were initially surprised by our decision to skip out on having a wedding party, but we look back at it as one of the best choices we made about our day. Not having to pick out bridesmaids and groomsmen saved us major stress, spared our friends of any potential hurt feelings, and ultimately helped us to create a wedding that felt decidedly low-key. If you and your partner are also on the fence about having a wedding party, read on for some damn good reasons (if I do say so myself!) to consider going without one.

The Fashionable Sister/DJ Duo You've Been Seeing All Over Instagram

When you're best friends with Gigi Hadid and Selena Gomez, you better have the style to match. Luckily for sisters/DJs Simi and Haze Khadra (aka SIMIHAZE), one could even argue that their fashion choices surpass their famous friends.

The Saudi-born Palestinian sisters attended their first Chanel show at the tender age of 14 and haven't slowed down since. These identical twins have a penchant for vintage attire (think old graphic tees, newsboy hats, and Gucci/Louis Vuitton sets). They've also been spotted in those tiny '90s sunglasses that have been making a comeback this season. Scroll on to see some of their best looks ahead.

The Critical Reason You Should Buy This Bestselling Exfoliator

The late Dr. Fredric Brandt was one of the best-known "dermatologists to the stars," counting celebrities like Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow as his trusted clientele. When he died by suicide in 2015, his colleagues and friends decided to honor his memory through the Dr. Brandt Foundation, which encourages open dialogue about mental health conditions.

While there is no one reason a person decides to take their own life, reducing the stigma surrounding depression can empower people to seek help. It's a vital cause that's worth supporting, especially when you consider that the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention estimates that there are 123 suicides per day in the United States.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and this year the Dr. Brandt Foundation has partnered with The Trevor Project, an organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ youth. The brand created a limited-edition packaging of its beloved Microdermabrasion Exfoliator ($80), and $5 of each sale will be donated to The Trevor Project throughout the month of September.

It's hard not to find poignancy in this purchase in light of recent news that 9-year-old Jamel Myles took his life after reportedly being bullied after coming out as gay. According to The Trevor Project's research, suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people between ages 10 and 24.

According to Stephane Colleu, CEO and president of the Dr. Brandt Foundation, "We are committed to bravely advocating for and educating communities about mental health well-being and mental health issues. Our September #sayiloveyou campaign is about sharing mental health wellness tips and facts about mental health to reach those that need it most." Ahead of Sept. 10, which is World Suicide Prevention Day, Colleu encourages supporters of this cause to share a picture of a heart with the hashtag, in an effort to show a dedication to breaking the stigma surrounding discussing mental health.

If you or a loved one are in need of any help, the National Suicide Prevention organization has several resources and a 24/7 lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

The Dior Saddle Bag Is Nice, but This One's Named After Princess Diana

If you're a fashion girl, you're probably familiar with the classic Lady Dior bag and the signature Gancio clasp spotted on Salvatore Ferragamo Lady D chain-strap designs. But you might not have realized that these two creations were named after and popularized by the late Princess Diana.

While she collected an assortment of luxury handbags throughout the years, Diana's black quilted Dior satchel with gold hardware and her many Ferragamo crossbody pouches became iconic. Today, both brands still market these silhouettes with ties to the beloved royal. Read on to see Princess Diana wearing them, then shop the modernized versions.

This Is the Formula to Burn More Calories in Every Workout

Movement requires energy, and energy burns calories. Technically speaking it's not that simple, but if your main objective is to burn calories during exercise, movement is key. Walking, running, dancing, and weightlifting are all ways in which your body burn calories. The activity you choose is up to you, but if you're looking to maximize how many calories you burn, we recommend incorporating strength training into your routine.

The amount of calories you'll be able to burn is contingent upon a variety of factors according to Pratik Patel, MS, RD, CSSD, CSCS, director of performance nutrition, and assistant strength and conditioning coach for the New York Giants. "The longer the session, the greater number of sets/reps, and higher the intensity - the more calories that will be burned," Pratik said. In order to get a greater burn, Pratik advises doing "movements that recruit more groups of large muscle mass (compound exercises)" to elicit a great energy expenditure compared to isolated, smaller muscle movements (bicep curls).

Exercises like squats, deadlifts, rows, and push-ups are all examples of compound movements that will allow your body to burn more calories. If you aren't sure how to design your own weighlifting program, try this 4-week beginner's weightlifting program or take one of the following workouts with you to the gym.

6 Dangers of the Keto Diet, According to Experts

The keto diet has officially dethroned all other diets when it comes to popularity, and chances are at least one (or five) of your friends has given it a try. But keto is a bit controversial - some nutritionists say it should be avoided at all costs, while others point out that it's a highly effective way to shed pounds. It's indisputable that the keto diet is an extreme one: it's designed to mimic starvation, cutting carbs and upping your intake of fat, and thereby cause the body to go into the metabolic state known as ketosis.

If you've been considering trying the keto diet, it's important to be aware of its potential dangers - especially because it can have adverse effects on people with certain medical conditions. According to experts, these are the risks associated with the keto diet.

All Is Not Well With the Coopers in Riverdale's "Treacherous" Third Season

Mädchen Amick was among the guests at Variety's Power of Young Hollywood Event sponsored by H&M in LA on Aug. 28. Luckily, I was able to grab her for a quick interview on the red carpet, which meant I could grill her with some pressing questions about Riverdale's highly anticipated third season. Suffice it to say, the Coopers have been through a lot. After all, they had to deal with Chic (including the murder he came with), the revelation that Hal is actually the Black Hood, and even the near-death of Jughead. With all that in the rear view, I asked Amick if maybe the Coopers would have a chance to catch their breath. She gave me a resounding no. "Of course not! They live in Riverdale!" she said with a laugh.

Given everything that happened, it should come as no surprise that Alice is doing everything she can to mend from the horrors of season two. How does she do it? Well, it turns out she has a pretty unconventional way of processing her grief. "Alice gets lured into the very mysterious and troublesome cult that's been moving, and that Polly's been involved in," Amick revealed to me. She's, of course, referring to the Sisters of Quiet Mercy, which is a nunnery that has a pretty shady operation bubbling under the surface. "She's going in deep," Amick continued, "because she's looking to heal her wounds. And she thinks this is a way she can kind of make amends with what happened to the Cooper family."

I noted that Alice must be completely shaken after finding out her husband was the Black Hood all along, and Amick completely agreed. "She's rethinking her entire life," she said. But there's a silver lining to this unsettling cult situation: it will reconnect Alice with the daughter who's been tied closely with the sisters since the start of the series. "Alice and Polly get much closer through that journey, which of course just worries Betty. She's just like, 'Oh my gosh, now I'm losing another family member.'"

This begs the question: how will Alice support Betty while she's trying to reckon with the ghosts of her own past? "It's hard. Her hands are full. So it leaves Betty to have to deal with this alone," Amick said. But there's obviously a bright side: Betty's pretty well-equipped to handle her own baggage. "I feel like Betty is the adult of the family; she takes care of everyone, she's the top of the pyramid. And, you know, Alice thinks that she is, but she's not. Betty's way smarter."

Before I let Amick go, I asked if she could tell me anything about the season three premiere, even a word that might give us a hint of what we're in for. "Treacherous," she said with a grin. Oh, boy. Looks like things are only going to get darker for Archie and friends when the next chapter begins.

The third season of Riverdale will premiere on Oct. 10.

The Real Reason Princess Diana Had a Public Funeral

Image Source: Getty / Anwar Hussein

Princess Diana's tragic death is one of the most heartbreaking news stories of the century; the 36-year-old former Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, and seven days later, she was honored with a public funeral that remains one of the most watched events in history. An estimated 2.5 billion people worldwide viewed or listened to the funeral, while another three million crowded the streets of London to follow the route of Diana's coffin from Kensington Palace to her final resting place at the Spencer family home in Althorp. While the event brought in many well-wishers - and celebrity guests like Tom Cruise, Hillary Clinton, Anna Wintour, and Steven Spielberg - Diana's funeral was originally intended to be a private affair attended only by members of the royal family and her closest relatives and friends. So how did it go from a personal event to a history-making phenomenon?

Image Source: Getty / Anwar Hussein

Just hours after Diana's death, her ex-husband Prince Charles arrived in Paris with her sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, to take her body back to the UK. Her passing was met with an extraordinary outpouring of love and grief from the public, and Londoners began leaving tributes of flowers, candles, photos, and personal notes outside her home at Kensington Palace. But the reactions from the royal family had a different impact: they were at their Summer residence at Balmoral Castle at the time of Diana's death, and their initial decision not to return to London (nor to mourn the princess publicly) led to much criticism.

There was also allegedly a very heated discussion about Diana's funeral arrangements. Britain's Channel Four news reported that Queen Elizabeth II had insisted that Diana's ceremony be private, but that Charles put up "ferocious resistance." A senior official close to the circle said that it was "made very clear to Prince Charles" that Diana's body "was on no account to be brought to any of the royal palaces," adding, "The queen's desire was for her to be taken to a private mortuary and then to a private funeral." But when Charles traveled to Paris to pick up Diana's body, he spoke to then-Prime Minister Tony Blair, and the two agreed that Diana should be laid out at St. James's Palace with a public funeral held at Westminster Abbey. Between Charles's tenacious argument, the obvious emotion from people around the world, and an intervention from Tony Blair, Elizabeth eventually relented. Five days after Diana's death, she came back to London and acknowledged the public's outpouring of grief in a live video from Buckingham Palace, and the following day, Diana's public funeral took place.

Starting at 9:08 a.m. from Kensington Palace, Diana's coffin was taken on a route through the streets of London, along Hyde Park to St. James's Palace, where thousands waited in line to sign a public condolence book and where Prince Harry and Prince William joined the procession alongside their father, grandfather, and uncle, Earl Spencer. The coffin, accompanied by eight Welsh Guards, passed Buckingham Palace, where members of the royal family waited outside; Queen Elizabeth II bowed her head as it went by.

Diana's ceremony at Westminster Abbey began at 11 a.m. and was attended by government officials, foreign dignitaries, and Hollywood celebrities. Elton John performed "Candle in the Wind," which was rewritten for Diana by Bernie Taupin, who originally penned the song in 1973 to honor Marilyn Monroe. Just six weeks before her death, Diana was photographed comforting Elton at the funeral of their friend, fashion designer Gianni Versace. Diana's brother, Charles, gave an infamous eulogy in which he admonished both the royal family and the global press for their treatment of his sister.

Diana was buried privately later that day. The only people present were a close friend, her mother and siblings, Prince Charles, William, Harry, and a clergyman. She wore a black dress by Catherine Walker and held on to a rosary given to her by Mother Teresa (who, sadly, died the same week as Diana). She was laid to rest on a small island in the middle of a lake at Althorp, her family's estate. Charles Spencer decided that her gravesite was better off there than at their family vault in the local church, because it could be more easily cared for and offered better privacy for William and Harry to visit. The island where Diana's grave sits is accessed by a path of 36 trees - one for every year of her life - and black swans and white roses float in the water. Despite the drama surrounding Princess Diana's funeral plans, the public event still has an impact on all of those who watched and attended it and speaks volumes about her influence around the world.

29 Pictures That Prove Prince William and Prince Harry's Sporting Prowess

The British royals have always been avid sports fans, from the queen's famous love of horse racing, to Prince William's devotion to Aston Villa Football Club. But they don't just watch sports: they participate in them too, too. Some members of the royal family have even turned sports into a career, but Prince William and Prince Harry prefer to play for fun. Over the years, we've seen the brothers skiing, playing table tennis, and tackling each other at soccer, but they're clearly most at home on the polo field. Both princes have played the game for years, and they frequently take part in charity matches. Harry was recently spotted kissing his wife at the Sentebale polo, and William is a regular at the Gloucestershire Festival of Polo. Though they'll often hit the pitch on their own, we get particularly excited when they team up. Ahead, take a look back at some of their best moments getting sporty together. And yes, that lightsaber fight totally counts.

Serena Williams Took a Typical Tennis Skirt and Smashed It, Rocking a Lavender Tutu at the US Open

Not all superheroes wear capes - some wear tutus. On Wednesday night, Serena Williams stunned on the court during the second round of the 2018 US Open, dominating Germany's Carina Witthoeft to advance to the third round. Her applause-worthy serve and accuracy were no surprise to fans and tennis-lovers alike, but Serena sporting a lavender tutu like the queen she is had just about everyone praising her look.

Since the French Open announced that Serena wouldn't be able to wear her signature black catsuit during the tournament, the 23-time Grand Slam Champion - who is no stranger to an iconic comeback - retorted in the best way possible: with tutus. She has been rocking gorgeous, custom looks from Off-White founder Virgil Abloh's collaboration with Nike, combining chicness with athleticwear in a way that only Serena could pull off (although don't judge me if I try to as well). During the first round, Serena wore the same tutu and fishnet ensemble in black, with Virgil's signature "LOGO" embellishments and a custom "SERENA" detail on the wrist.

Read on to see the photos of Serena's iconic tournament look, and stay tuned to see what she rocks when she takes on sister Venus on Friday during round three.

Queen Elizabeth II Did Something at Diana's Funeral That the Public Did Not See Coming

Princess Diana was honored with a public funeral on Sept. 6, 1997, seven days after her tragic death. The Most Important Piece of Advice I Give to People Who Want to Go Vegan

I've been vegan for a few years and I've loved every second of my plant-based journey. I'm also a nutrition coach who helps clients change their eating habits so they can feel their very best each and every day. Yes, going vegan can be a tough transition, but only if you don't do it the right way.

There's a lot of guidance I give to clients and friends who are looking to go vegan, but there's one nugget of advice that trumps them all: make the changes gradually. You can't expect to see anything different if you try to give up everything in one fell swoop. I see too many people make that mistake. They swear they're giving up dairy or meat forever, and then three days later, they're craving a creamy yogurt so badly that they go overboard and eat too much ice cream.

Rather than going cold turkey, think about how often you eat meat. If it's once a day, cut back to four times a week. The following week, only eat meat two or three times a week, and so on and so forth. This allows your body to get used to the changes you're creating, and it will make it much easier to stick to it in the long run. Plus, you will start to notice the positive benefits as they gradually show up in your body and mind. You'll actually want to eat more and more plants as time goes on.

Getting Rid of Belly Fat Is Harder Than You Think - Here's How to Do It

I have this fantasy where I eat pizza and Salt & Straw Chocolate Gooey Brownie for every meal but also have abs. I'm not talking, like, a six-pack, but just some nice abdominal definition. (You'd think I'd go all out since this is a fantasy version of myself, but IDK. I'm sure there's something to unpack there.)

While there are probably some people who actually can munch on pizza all the time and somehow manage to look like one of the Amazon warriors from Wonder Woman, that's just not the case for most of us. That's because belly fat is notoriously difficult to get rid of, and lower belly fat can be particularly frustrating. Sometimes I feel like no matter how clean I eat or how many crunches I do, that fat at the lower end of my abdomen just isn't going to go away. Like Winter in 2018 or millennial pink. Unfortunately, while there's no way to spot-reduce fat from certain areas, there are some diet and exercise changes you can make to help reduce fat overall.

I consulted Josh Gallegos, trainer to WWE superstars, and Whitney English, MS, RDN, CPT of Whitney E. RD. Here are their best tips for reducing lower belly fat. And no, crunches are not on the agenda.

Meghan Markle Took a Secret Trip to Hang Out With Her BFF - and She Flew Commercial

Traveling when you're a royal requires a lot of planning, organizing, and security, but the new Duchess of Sussex proved recently that she can still fly under the radar - quite literally. According to People, Meghan used some of her downtime between royal engagements this Summer to take a trip to Toronto where she caught up with her best friend Jessica Mulroney. She even flew commercial, though we're guessing she wasn't exactly seated in coach.

According to reports, Meghan spent a few days at the home of Jessica and her husband Ben, where she was also able to spend some time with their 7-year-old twin boys Brian and John (who were the most perfect pageboys at the royal wedding) and 4-year-old Ivy (who was one of the bridesmaids). She also spent a night out with a group of friends. Meghan lived in Toronto while she was filming Suits and still had plenty of connections in the Canadian city.

Meghan is now back in the UK, and she got back to royal duties when she and Prince Harry attended a special charity performance of Hamilton on Wednesday. The duchess turned heads in her tuxedo dress, but Harry soon stole the spotlight back when he broke into song as he made a speech at the end of the show. Their next appearance will be on Sep. 4, when they're set to attend the WellChild Awards.

David and Victoria Beckham Look So Good at This Soccer Event, I Suddenly Care About Sports

Do I care about sports usually? No, not my thing. That is, until Thursday, Aug. 30, when I spotted some ridiculously stylish photos of David and Victoria Beckham attending the UEFA Champions League draw in Monaco.

Victoria was there to support her athletically inclined husband since he was being presented with the UEFA President's Award on stage, but before they made their way inside the event, they posed for some stunning red carpet shots. David basically auditioned to be the next James Bond in his sleek suit, while the fashion designer wore a minimalist, plunging black dress that was basically the definition of "posh." (Wink, wink.)

The Beckhams are fresh off their tropical family vacation, which they took with their four children: Cruz, Romeo, Brooklyn, and Harper. Although their kids don't appear to be in Monaco with them, I'm sure it won't be long until we all get another sweet Beckham photo op. Check out more snaps from David and Victoria's night out ahead!

This Scalp Spray Is the 1 Product I Never Knew I Needed - but Now Can't Live Without

I have tried every scalp product under the cosmetic sun. Oils, shampoos, masks, scrubs, deep conditioning treatments - I've used them all in an effort to get my extremely itchy scalp to calm down. In yet another fit of frustration, I was searching the internet for a solution to my uncomfortable problem when I saw a recommendation for a scalp spray while reading Sephora's while reading online community reviews.

Completely intrigued by the concept of a spray I could simply spritz at my roots whenever I felt the urge to scratch, that also wouldn't disrupt my blowout, I knew I needed to get my hands on one. IGK Trust Issues Instant Scalp Rebalancing Treatment ($29) comes in the coolest spray can I've ever seen, adorned with roses and a snake on its packaging. After seeing that it had been awarded a Sephora Community Chosen seal of approval for it's stellar reviews, I was confident it would be the answers to my itchy prayers. With a combination of hydrating hyaluronic acid, plus clarifying apple cider vinegar and lemon extract, the formula instantly solved my scratching dilemma. Now every time my scalp starts to itch, I grab my bottle and head to the bathroom to mist it on.

The very best part about the spray, though, is that it doesn't make my hair look greasy like the other scalp treatments I've used, meaning I never have to wash my hair afterward. Luckily, the only head-scratching I'm doing these days is when I'm wondering why everything else can't be so easy.

PSA: Kylie Cosmetics Is Coming to Ulta

While all of us were going about our pre-Labor Day weekend work-cram, Kylie Jenner just dropped a beauty bomb on us via Twitter. The new mom revealed that her line, Kylie Cosmetics, will arrive at Ulta stores around the country just in time for the holidays.

Considering that the line has never been in a mass retailer, and only available online and at a few Kylie Cosmetic stores, this is a certifiably big deal. Now that the products will be available in Ulta, consumers will get to see best-selling liquid lipstick shades Candy K, Koko K, and more in person before they buy.

While we wait for King Kylie to reveal more details, we've picked out some of our favorite products to stock up on in the meantime.

How Hollywood Hairstylists Adapt Beauty Looks From Book to TV

The phrase, "The book was better," has become a common cliché when discussing films and TV based off of novels. But one thing that is probably always done best on the big screen? Hair, as studios enlist stylists and makeup artists to bring characters to life through their appearance. We enlisted hairstylists, who both worked on this Summer's blockbuster film and TV series, respectively, to get a peek into that process.

Do the Research

According to Heike Merker, lead hair and makeup artist for Crazy Rich Asians, based off of the book of the same name by Kevin Kwan, it's obviously imperative to read both a film's script and its inspiration. "There was more information in the book than in the script," Merker explained. "To feel the character more, I had to get their backstory from the book."

Patti DeHaney was Amy Adams's personal hairstylist on the set of HBO's Sharp Objects, and she turned to Gillian Flynn's thriller to understand the relationship Camille, Adams's character, has to her hair. "Camille was a beauty of her small town when she was a teenager," DeHaney said. "In the novel, you get to understand the effects that feeling unloved and being the outcast of the family has on her."

Make Bold Choices

Both hairstylists said that part of their job is to manifest a character's personality through how they look. In Crazy Rich Asians Fiona Xie plays Kitty Pong, a social climbing actress, and she sports a teased-to-the-heavens ponytail to boot. "In the book, Kitty is described as a bit crazy and overdone," Merker said. "That's her character, so we tried to make her really look like it in the film. It's not like there was always a description of what everyone's hair looked like in the book, so we drew on their personalities to inspire the looks."

Amy Adams has become synonymous with her red hair, and the crew of Sharp Objects wanted to work with her natural color. "There was never any talk of changing [Adams] hair color for Camille," DeHaney said. Since the show deals with somber topics such as murder and self-harm, DeHaney admitted they didn't want Adams' hair to be too "pretty." Because of this, they didn't heat style or straighten Adams' hair. "We took advantage of that airy, textured look," she said.

Judge a Hairstyle by the Cover

According to Merker, no hairspiration is too obvious. "We looked at the cover of the book, and thought it would be a good hairstyle for Astrid," she said, referencing the Jackie O-like character played by Gemma Chan. "With the dress and everything, [the bun] was perfect for her."

This Is How a Beauty Mogul Does Hair and Makeup For Her Wedding

When ecoconscious beauty entrepreneur Josie Maran first met her husband David Belle, she was in her most natural state: it was at a party on her farm in Pennsylvania, where she roamed barefoot and barefaced, her unkempt curls blowing freely in the wind.

It makes sense, then, why she'd want to extend that intimate, carefree vibe to their wedding day taking place at the same location so many years later, despite her insurmountable access to products and industry pros. "Some people may have expected me to do a full glam look, but the real me is all about being minimal, feeling good, and not being stressed about makeup or maintaining my look," Maran said.

Unexpected, as it seemed, was exactly what they were going for: the private ceremony took place at precisely 6:30 in the morning, followed by breakfast on hay bales, cake, mimosas, canoeing, naps, and (eventually) dinner. This goes for her day-of hair and makeup, too - which, as you can see for yourself below, would be pretty damn hard not to l-o-v-e.

How 1 Woman's Tragic Death Highlights a Scary New Plastic Surgery Trend

A 31-year-old British woman named Leah Cambridge died after traveling to Izmir, Turkey, to undergo a Brazilian butt lift, according to reports.

Cambridge, who had three children and worked as an esthetician in Leeds, England, traveled to Elite Aftercare, a center that has treated British reality TV stars such as Amber Turner and Kayleigh Morris. The exact cause of her death is undetermined. Cambridge's partner, Scott Franks, wrote on Facebook that she fell unconscious "really early on" in the procedure and did not wake up.

The butt lift, which costs about $6,500 at Elite Aftercare, is a controversial surgery. It involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to one's rear and has been responsible for the deaths of 11 women in Florida. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), gluteal fat grafting has a higher death rate than any other cosmetic procedure.

According to Matthew Elias, a Florida dermatologist, "The major risk with BBLs is fat embolism, or when fat globules are released into the bloodstream. This can cause heart attacks, stroke, and in this case, death."

That ASPS task force suggested that butt lifts are dangerous because increased demand of the operation has led to more non-board-certified plastic surgeons performing it. If you're interested in any cosmetic surgery, it's highly recommended that you undergo the procedure under the supervision of a doctor - not a medispa.

New Research Suggests a High-Fat Diet Actually Makes It Harder to Feel Full

One of the benefits of eating a high-fat, low-carb diet - besides the weight loss - is that fat is a satiating macronutrient. Loading up on healthy monounsaturated fats such as avocados, nuts, and olive oil keeps you feeling satisfied until your next meal. But a new study suggests that eating high-fat foods actually blocks the brain from letting it know it's time to stop eating.

The research, published in Science Translational Medicine, found that mice that were fed a high-fat diet produce a hormone called MMP-2 that clips receptors for the hormone leptin in the brain, according to the EurekAlert release. Often referred to as the satiety hormone, leptin's job is to inform the brain that you have enough fat stored and are sated. Since MMP-2 blocks leptin from binding to its receptors, your brain doesn't get the signal that your stomach is full and you should stop eating. Researchers believe this mechanism explains a condition called leptin resistance, which is common among obese patients but isn't well understood. They also found when MMP-2 is blocked, the leptin can still signal when the stomach is full.

It's important to note that this study was conducted in mice, not humans. The type of fat the mice were fed also wasn't specified in the press release, whether it was healthy fats including monounsaturated fats or unhealthier ones such as saturated or trans fats. While scientists are continuing to study the phenomenon of leptin resistance, they are hoping for a clinical trial to test if MMP-2 blockers could actually help people lose weight.

In the meantime, check with your doctor or registered dietitian before making any major dietary changes. High-fat diets, such as the keto diet, should be done under medical supervision.

To Menstrual Cup or Not to Menstrual Cup? These Experts Have Answers

Selecting the right feminine hygiene product for your cycle is an intensely personal choice. Some women are most comfortable in maxi pads, while others swear by period-proof underwear. But for long wear and convenience, two feminine hygiene products typically duke it out: tampons and menstrual cups. So what's the real difference between these two methods? Is one safer or "better" than the other?

Amandine Pranlas-Descours, global brand director for menstrual cup manufacturer Intimina, said that it depends on the material. "Cups [that] are made of medical-grade silicone have a lot of health benefits, compared to tampons," she said. "Medical-grade silicone is a supersafe material - ours is actually the same material they use in surgical implants and pacemakers. The material is inert, so it doesn't affect the natural pH balance of the body. It's hypoallergenic, latex-free, phthalate-free, and contains zero toxins."

Dr. Shari Lawson, M.D., assistant professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, added that there can be both health and environmental benefits to using menstrual cups. "Some women are really concerned about some of the chemicals and bleach that are used in tampons," she noted. "Additionally, the reusable versions of the cup are fairly environmentally friendly because you just rinse and reuse - no tampons to flush into the sewer system or plastic packed pads to fill the landfill."

There are also additional health benefits, explained Pranlas-Descours. Menstrual cups, she said, don't absorb any moisture - they just hold the menstrual fluid until removed, so they don't dry out the tissue or cause irritation. Tampon fibers, on the other hand, absorb all fluid - including much-needed discharge that keeps our vaginas healthy and comfortable.

Lawson said that while some people may be hesitant about using a menstrual cup, there is really no reason to feel any differently about a menstrual cup vs. a tampon. "The menstrual cups come in two sizes, and if you can insert a tampon, you can probably use one," she said. "Like a tampon, you shouldn't feel it if it's in the right place. There isn't really a way to injure yourself using a menstrual cup - just be sure to wash your hands and keep your nails short."

Dr. Betty Chou, M.D., assistant professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said that while she has some patients who prefer to use a menstrual cup, you should still be aware of how long you have been wearing one. "Like tampons, they have the same very small risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) but are generally considered safe to use," she said. "I've never had a patient who has had an injury from using a menstrual cup," she said.

Like all things concerning your period, which feminine hygiene method you choose is completely up to your personal preference and lifestyle, and both tampons and menstrual cups are considered perfectly safe to use. Do your homework, experiment, and don't be afraid to switch it up until you find the method that works for you.
