How to Soothe a Sunburn So You Can Better Rest at Night, According to a Dermatologist

Everything is uncomfortable when you have a sunburn, from showering to changing clothes to trying to fall asleep. In fact, you may notice that your symptoms are more intense at night.

"Many of my patients report that their skin symptoms are worse at night, whether it's from a sunburn or from skin conditions such as eczema," Rajani Katta, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and author of Glow: The Dermatologist's Guide to a Whole Foods Younger Skin Diet, told POPSUGAR. It's a common phenomenon and one that experts are still trying to understand. "We do know that some symptoms are worse when you go to bed because you're no longer distracted by your everyday tasks, but researchers are also studying the role of circadian rhythms," Dr. Katta said. "Just like so many of the body's hormones follow a circadian rhythm, it's thought that some of the body's chemical messengers that relay the sensation of itch may also have their own rhythm."

When you're sunburned, there's a lot more going on than even meets the eye. "A sunburn is a visible sign of damage - it signals that UV radiation has triggered free radical production," she explained. "These free radicals can be very damaging to the skin, causing harm to proteins (including collagen), lipids, and even the DNA in our skin. On a visible level, this chain of events results in redness. On a microscopic level, you'll see cellular damage and cells of the immune system."

To ease the discomfort both during the day and at night, "I recommend starting with cool tap water compresses, and then following with a moisturizer," Dr. Katta said. "Soak a washcloth in cool tapwater, then apply it to your skin for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Remove the washcloth, then apply a fragrance-free moisturizing cream while your skin is still damp. This adds moisture to the skin, and helps with barrier repair."

You may also want to turn down the temperature in your bedroom and slip into your softest PJs and sheets. "The key is to avoid irritating your skin any further with sweat or irritating fabrics," she said. Of course, applying sunscreen throughout the day - especially if you're in the sun - is essential to avoiding a sunburn in the first place, but when it happens, these steps can help provide relief.

Kygo Releases Dance Remix of "Higher Love" With Brand New Vocals From Whitney Houston

Picture this: It's 1990 and Whitney Houston is at the peak of her career. She records a cover of Steve Winwood's hit "Higher Love" from a few years prior, but as Rolling Stone reports, she was about to break into the R&B sphere and her team preferred that she didn't release covers. Now, it's 2019 and her posthumous version of the uplifting hit is about to be the song of the Summer. Houston's estate recently teamed up with Norwegian DJ Kygo for a remix of the song, and our playlists are officially complete.

Seven years after her death, Houston's stunning vocals shine throughout Kygo's beat, and Pat Houston, her sister-in-law and executor of her estate, feels it's the perfect time for the song. "The current cultural environment has been thirsty for something uplifting and inspiring," she tells Rolling Stone. "Who better to inspire than Whitney, the most exhilarating vocalist of all time?" She said that "Kygo was the first person that was mentioned. He put his spin on it and did a fantastic job."

And he absolutely did the song justice. "I was trying to make it sound like something that she would've done, but also something that's my style," he told the site. Check out the song above and add it to the top of your Summer playlist.

This Is 1 Symptom You Should Never Ignore After Sex, According to an Ob-Gyn

Sex should leave you feeling euphoric, but if your stomach has ever felt unsettled afterward, it's important that you get to the bottom of it. "It's never normal to feel nauseous after sex," Lauren Streicher, MD, an ob-gyn and medical director of Northwestern Medicine's Center for Sexual Medicine and Menopause, told POPSUGAR. That said, it does happen, usually for one of a few reasons.

The first has to do with the cervix, the gatekeeper between your vaginal canal and your uterus. "Contact with your cervix during sex - or cervical stimulation - can create a vasalvagol response in which your blood pressure and pulse drop," Dr. Streicher explained. This can cause you to feel nauseous or even to pass out. Your cervix changes throughout your cycle, dropping lower during your period, which may make it more susceptible during penetration.

You might also feel nauseous if sex is painful, which may be the result of an underlying condition. "Women with endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease may experience painful intercourse," Dr. Streicher said. Other causes range from vaginal or cervical infections to fibroids. "If you experience any type of intercourse that is painful, you should see a gynecologist," she added.

Perhaps more rarely, nausea is a symptom of a psychological condition known as sexual aversion disorder. "We don't know how often it occurs in women, but we know that it can stem from past sexual trauma, or being brought up in a very religious atmosphere where sex was 'bad,'" Dr. Streicher explained. Treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy or anxiety medication can help, so always discuss any concerns with your doctor.

Exactly How Much an LGBTQ+ Person Spends on Beauty For Pride

Not to sound like a Mastercard commercial, but celebrating the big events you're passionate about is priceless. (Just ask Macy's - the retailer reportedly spends a cool $11.6 million on the Thanksgiving Day parade each year.) For LGBTQ+ people, the biggest one often comes during Pride month, and this year's New York City parade marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which means you can expect members of the community to go big.

Exactly how big, you wonder? Because it's hard to describe how detailed - and, sometimes, rainbow-fueled - the getting-ready process can be, we asked YouTube personality, activist, and author Gigi Gorgeous to walk us through what she does beauty-wise for Pride . . . and just how much it costs.

The Sleep Drink Athletes Swear by Is Now Available to Everyone - and You Bet I Tried It

Sleep is one of those things that I want but oftentimes feel like I can't have - so when I was given the chance to test out Som Sleep, a drink that professional athletes praise for its positive effects on slumber, you bet I took that opportunity in full stride. Regardless of what you might hear from others or experience yourself, lack of sleep is common. One in three adults don't get enough on a regular basis, according to the CDC - as a reminder, the recommendation is at least seven hours per night. But, almost five dozen pro sports teams swear Som Sleep really works.

Som Sleep launched in January 2018, and you won't find it next to over-the-counter melatonin pills; instead, it'll most likely be in the functional beverage section along with cold brew, kombucha, etc. The water-based drink sweetened with stevia leaf comes in an eight-ounce can - a familiar look that resembles products vowing to boost your energy. It's called the "anti-Red Bull," though, and is made from ingredients that naturally help you fall asleep faster and achieve a better night's sleep overall as opposed to medication that simply knocks you out (which we'll discuss in depth later).

The company's CMO Brad Marks told POPSUGAR that 54 pro sports teams purchase Som Sleep regularly. Teams include Major League Baseball's LA Dodgers and Colorado Rockies and the NBA's Boston Celtics. You don't need to actually be an athlete to reap the benefits of Som Sleep - now this drink is available to everyone. "We all sort of have intense day jobs. We all try to work out. We're all on the road," cofounder Rob Bent, who's also the chief product officer and has a background in food science, explained. Som can help you perform at the best of your ability because, Rob said, it'll support a healthier sleep cycle so you're ready to work the next day. Ahead, check out details about what exactly Som Sleep is, where to buy it, and how I felt using it for five nights.

Why the New Monster in Stranger Things Season 3 Is Likely a Character We Already Know

I've long wondered how the Duffer brothers were going to revamp the story for Stranger Things season three. The past two seasons have roughly followed the same formula, after all: a group of lovable, quirky kids battle against a sci-fi monster with the help of their telekinetic pal, without the rest of the town ever being the wiser. But a repeat of the same recycled story - Will succumbing to the Upside Down's power in some way, Eleven saving the day - would've been a little too familiar third time around, no?

Fortunately, judging by the two season three trailers that have been released, an old monster threatening Hawkins still manages to promise some fresh excitement for the Netflix hit. Why? Because that monster might actually be Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery).

In the final trailer released for season three in late June, the red, pulsing, spiky creature we see unleash a roar toward the end of the previous footage Netflix shared is revealed to be an evolved version of Billy. Specifically, as Will explains to Eleven after both of them begin hearing an otherworldly voice that seems to belong to the evil monster Eleven vanquished in season two, maybe when she sealed the gate to the Upside Down she locked the monster out in the real world - rather than back in its malevolent home.

"What if he never left? What if we locked him out here with us?" Will asks Eleven. "He'd wanna attach himself to someone again. A new host." Then the camera zooms in on Billy, which all but confirms that he's a goner.

As a reminder, Billy is introduced in season two as the metal-loving, mullet-rocking, physically and verbally abusive older brother of Max (Sadie Sink), who is forced to move to Hawkins so her family can have a fresh start from their lives in California. He's a bully through and through and doesn't inspire much sympathy. At the end of the season we discover that he's stuck in a cycle of abuse, since his father is just as physically and verbally violent as he is.

In season three, which takes place over the course of one Summer in Hawkins, Billy has gotten a job as a lifeguard at Hawkins Pool - he's seen strutting around shirtless, flirting with a few different girls. But the important thing to note, chiseled pecs be damned, is the shot of him in the shower with a deeply troubled look on his face as he examines some kind of red and black growth blossoming on his left forearm.

So, what could this mean? The poster and previous teasers for the season included rat imagery and footage of rats running through a warehouse. Rats are known for carrying disease, right? What if the rats living underground in Hawkins got into those tunnels that Hopper and the kids were wandering around in under the pumpkin patch in season two and are now carrying an infectious, Upside Down-borne illness that's spreading because of the original monster's lingering presence in the town? The infection on Billy's arm is in the same red and black shades as those gross, slimy vines that are all over the Upside Down, so it checks out.

Obviously, we can't be sure of how the rats came in contact with Billy, but it wouldn't be that hard to imagine the animals inadvertently spread the disease to the pool somehow. That scary-looking infection doesn't seem to just be on Billy's arm, either - another shot in one of the trailers is a close up of his eye, which has black tendrils reaching across his eyeball toward a very dilated pupil. Obviously he's enduring some terrifying transformation . . . but into what?

That question brings us to the first trailer's final scene, which is of a new Upside Down monster. It appears to be growing larger and larger in the hallway of a hospital, with Nancy and Jonathan on either side of it, looking on in horror. Judging from the way it expands on screen, slowly but surely hulking out in the darkness, it seems like whatever it is, it's transforming from a human body into the creature that we see roar a few seconds later.

Picture this: Billy goes to the hospital to get treated for the infection on his arm and in his eye, but by the time he gets there, it's too late. Hawkins Medical Center doctors don't know how to deal with Upside Down-level bacteria or monster DNA! So, Nancy and Jonathan descend on the hospital in hopes of saving Billy (or, at the very least, trying to take him out before he transforms), but they arrive just a little too late. That would certainly explain Nancy's look of total horror and running mascara as she finds herself with a giant, bloodthirsty creature between her and her boyfriend.

Since the latest footage also includes the shot of Billy chillin' in the same warehouse that the Upside Down monster appears to be calling home, it can also be argued that it's not a rat-borne infection at all. Maybe the monster is able to hypnotize people in some way if Eleven and Will can hear "his" voice.

Either way you shake it, though, it seems Billy isn't going to make it out of season three with his mullet (or the rest of his body/soul) intact. Luckily we still have a few weeks to think this theory through, since Stranger Things season three doesn't arrive on Netflix until July 4.

Dwayne Johnson's Toddler Keeps Pulling a Prank on Him, and It Got Ryan Reynolds's Approval

Dwayne Johnson's daughter Jasmine has him wrapped around her little finger. The father of three girls recently shared a photo with his middle child, and described a back-and-forth familiar to many parents - including expectant dad Ryan Reynolds.

"'Daddy, I'm thirsty, can I have some of your water?'" Dwayne said of the "dance" he goes through with his and Lauren Hashian's 3-year-old. Apparently, Jasmine likes to ask for water, only to dump it out, ask for more, and then repeat her pranks all over again. "Repeat until there's no more water," Dwayne said. "Then she runs off and I'm left with an empty water bottle."

Ah, yes, the patience of a parent. Good thing there are lots of laughs involved! This hilarious push-and-pull must hit close to home for Ryan and Blake Lively too, since Ryan responded to Dwayne's photo with "🙌 🙌 🙌." Perhaps his own daughters, 4-year-old James and 2-year-old Inez, are pulling the same shenanigans at their house. Sounds like a playdate might be in store!

Cynthia Rowley and Daughter Kit Keenan Share the 1 Summer Tradition They Do as a Family

When I spoke with veteran designer Cynthia Rowley and her 20-year-old daughter Kit Keenan, a budding business owner and designer in her own right, at this year's POPSUGAR Play/Ground, they had just touched down in New York City from Paris and were hours away from hopping over to the beaches of Montauk. A scroll through their Instagram accounts brought up family snaps at the Egyptian pyramids, the four of them - Rowley, Keenan, Rowley's husband Bill Powers, and their daughter Gigi Powers - crammed in the back of a taxi in West Africa, and the crew all smiles before zip-lining in Puerto Rico.

So between work trips and family vacations, I had to know, what do a stylish, globetrotting mother-daughter duo like Rowley and Keenan always pack in their suitcase? What's on their travel bucket list? And, of course, what do they wear on a plane? See their answers to these questions below.

POPSUGAR: What's your go-to travel outfit?

Cynthia Rowley: It has to include a lot of layering.
Kit Keenan: My go-to plane outfit is just a vintage pair of jeans that I can wear the whole time there, dress them up with heels. Vintage jeans, sneakers, and a bunch of layers on top because I'm always freezing on the plane.

PS: What's the one thing you can't travel without?

CR: Can I say each other?
KK: OMG you're so corny.
CR: A swimsuit.
KK: A swimsuit, for sure, because you never know.
CR: Usually wherever you are you can get a little dip.
KK: And a wrap. Some sort of wrap so that if you have to sleep places you put it over your eyes.
CR: It can be a beach cover-up.
KK: [Or used as a] scarf. It's very versatile.

PS: What's one tradition your family does every Summer?

CR: Surf.
KK: Surf.
CR: As much as possible. As a family, we all four go out. It's so much fun, and our friends are all out in the water.
KK: When we're in the water surfing we can't be doing anything else. We have to be focused on being in the water, enjoying it, no technology. And just kind of being a tiny part of this huge ecosystem. It's like meditation.
CR: You're not in control. Mother Nature's in control. And that's a nice feeling.
KK: It makes you feel small in a good way.

PS: What's next on your travel bucket list?

KK: I really want to go to Korea. One of my friends was there abroad for school, and she loved it. That's next on my bucket list.
CR: We might be doing some work there, so hopefully we'll have a good excuse.
KK: I also want to go to Japan for the Olympics for my 21st birthday. My mom used to do work there and have a few stores, so we would go once a year. And OMG, I love it so much.

PS: If you could invite three people (living or dead) to join you on a private island, who would they be?

KK: I would invite [Jean-Michel] Basquiat, David Bowie, and Rihanna.
CR: Somebody funny. I would do Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, and Kristen Wiig. Three funny ladies, because you know you'd have a good time.

Ariana Grande's Golden Birthday Included an Epic "7 Rings" Cake and a Card From Madonna

Ariana Grande rang in her 26th birthday on Wednesday, but it wasn't just any other birthday - it was her golden one! In honor of the milestone, the singer celebrated with her family and friends - including her mom Joan and pal Normani - and an epic "7 Rings" cake, of course. "Another year around the sun n she still wearing these f*ckkin ears," Ariana captioned a photo of herself in a sexy black dress and her signature bunny ears. "Grateful for the love and for the people i get to share this life with. and thank u for the birthday wishes." Ariana also received a special note from Madonna herself, which she shared on her Instagram Stories. So sweet!

Following a tough year, Ariana has been making the most out of 2019! She launched her very own Starbucks drink in March, she's currently on her Sweetener world tour, and let's not forget that she dropped her fifth studio album, Thank U, Next, at the beginning of the year. Yep, this is Ariana's golden year, indeed!

Yes, Your Dentist Wants You to Floss, but This Is 1 Detail That Doesn't Matter as Much

You know you should brush and floss every day, but have you ever wondered if you should do one before the other? That's the question POPSUGAR posed to Jeffery Sulitzer, DMD, chief clinical officer at SmileDirectClub.

"A common question from patients is if it's more effective to floss before you brush or the other way around. Most people are surprised to learn it really doesn't matter which you do first - it's just important you're doing both regularly and thoroughly," Dr. Sulitzer said. "Brushing and flossing is the best way to remove decay-causing plaque, and it's very important to keep up with those habits to maintain good oral health."

You may be tempted to skip flossing when you're short on time, but brushing twice daily really isn't enough on its own. "Brushing your teeth is essential for removing plaque from the surface of your teeth, but it won't completely remove all of the plaque, as some can get stuck in those tough to reach places in between your teeth," he explained, which can lead to cavities. "Flossing removes the bacteria from between your teeth where the toothbrush cannot reach."

Fortunately, you shouldn't need to floss more than once a day. "Once is typically sufficient for most people since the bacterial colonies in your mouth that create plaque take around 24 hours to form," Dr. Sulitzer told POPSUGAR. In fact, it's possible to floss too much, which can be damaging to your gums. "If you floss too vigorously or apply too much pressure on the gums, they can become tender and bleed," he said. "Eventually, over flossing can harm your gum line, which exposes more of the roots, causing tooth decay and cavities."

Bottom line: it's best to floss properly once a day to ensure you're keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy - and it doesn't really matter when you do it, as long as you do.

Because it's hard to describe how detailed - and, sometimes, rainbow-fueled - the getting ready process can be, we asked YouTube personality, activist, and author Gigi Gorgeous to show to walk us through what she does beauty-wise for Pride. . . and just how much it costs.
