Here's What You Should Know About Box Dye Before You Apply It to Your Hair
Hair-color changes are extremely common around this time of year, since there's something about fall and winter that encourages people to shift over to dark, matte tones when the weather gets chilly. But while there are tons of people out there who only consult the pros for their basic hair needs, others like to take the DIY route and color their hair using box dye.
If you're thinking about doing the latter, there are a few things you should probably know first. "Box dye is one of those taboo subjects when it comes to color sessions and salon topics," celebrity hairstylist Christin Brown told POPSUGAR. "As colorists, working with someone's hair that has been previously colored with box dye, you tend to steer clear for many reasons."
According to Brown, professional color and box color don't mix well, and people who dye their hair at home run the risk of overprocessing it. "I wouldn't recommend that folks do their own color and especially not with box dye," she said.
At-home hair-dyeing sessions have skyrocketed in the last few months due to safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, and with talk of another potential shutdown happening before the year is up, it's easy to see why most folks will end up taking the at-home route. If you truly must dye your hair at home, there are a few things to know. First, Brown recommends you read all of the instructions in the coloring kit carefully, make sure you closely follow said instructions, and don't leave the dye on for any longer than you're supposed to.
Colorist Karissa Schaudt of Chicago's Maxine Salon added that you should also be wary of certain hair-dye ingredients. "In my professional opinion, I would avoid any color that contains ammonia in the developer," she said. Although this is an extremely common ingredient in the hair-dye industry, using it is ultimately a tradeoff; the powerful chemical damages your hair in the process.
After you've dyed your hair, you should follow that with a bonding treatment like Olaplex No. 0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment ($28) to strengthen the hair and protect it from damage.
Alternatively, you could also try a more temporary solution. "Whether you're contemplating highlights or just to cover your roots, a hair wax can be a fun way to try something new or a quick fix for unwanted grays," Brown said. One of her personal recommendations is the Hair Paint Wax Temporary Color ($7), which is made of natural ingredients and easy to wash out.
The takeaway here? While box dye isn't the worst thing in the world, many professional hairstylists would suggest you steer clear of it if you can.

Should You Wash Your Hair Before a Haircut, Hair Color, or Styling Appointment?
Getting a haircut should be a relaxing, enjoyable experience - you shouldn't be worried about things like whether you need to wash your hair beforehand. Even if you don't have an upcoming salon appointment on the calendar, keeping your hair clean is important for many reasons, but that's not to say you should feel embarrassed if you've had a particularly hectic week and didn't get a chance to wash your hair that morning.
To settle this debate, Gina Rivera, hairstylist and owner of Phenix Salon Suites, answered some common questions that many of us have asked ourselves - should I wash my hair before a haircut, color, or styling appointment? - so that we can focus all of our energy on landing on a particular hairstyle before we're actually in the salon chair (which we all know is the most important part).
Should You Wash Your Hair Before a Haircut?
To wash or not to wash all comes down to the type of haircut you typically get. If you get a dry cut, you'll want to come to the salon with freshly washed hair. "Build up on the hair can weigh it down and the hair may lay differently then it does when it's fresh and clean," Rivera told POPSUGAR. If you usually get your hair cut while wet, it's a different story. "Many stylists will select to wash your hair prior to cutting since most prefer to cut the hair wet rather than dry."
If you've visiting a new salon or stylist and are unsure if they're going to give you a dry cut or wet cut, you can always call ahead of time and ask. The coronavirus pandemic is another factor to consider: "With COVID-19, some salons are charging an extra fee for washing. This is an item you may want to inquire about when scheduling an appointment," she said.
Should You Wash Your Hair Before a Coloring Appointment?
It's a little different if you're heading to the salon for a hair-color appointment and not a haircut. You'll want clean, dry hair for this type of appointment. "Make sure when showing up for a color application that the hair is dry as well so that the stylist can properly assess your needs and apply the color," said Rivera.
Should You Wash Your Hair Before a Hairstyling Appointment?
For a hairstyling appointment - whether it be for a big event, wedding, prom, or graduation - you'll want to show up with hair that's clean, but not too clean. "Often, with updos, washing the hair the day prior is best because it allows the client to come to the salon with completely dry hair that is ready to style," said Rivera. Second-day hair is easier to work with and holds a style better.
The bottom line: don't stress it. Your hairstylist has seen it all and won't judge.

This Product You've Seen All Over TikTok Straight Up Eliminated My Need For Foundation
Truth be told, I don't remember where I first heard about the product that would overthrow my daily makeup routine. It may have been on a "best of" list, or talked about among friends, but eventually, I bought a jar of Dr. Jart's Cicapair Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment ($52). At $52, it was a modest investment in the future of my splotchy skin.
I have combination skin: overall dry, with perpetually large cheek pores and a nose that's prone to becoming oily halfway through the day. Due to a bout of mid-20s cystic acne, my face is uneven in both color and surface texture. (Gotta love acne, eh?) It's not perfect, but I'm OK with that.
What I don't love, however, is that I'm prone to redness. I'm a pale, freckled gal, and my skin's undertone could be compared to the color of Dorothy's ruby slippers. I used to dull the redness with a primer and a hefty dose of foundation, but the Correcting Treatment has eliminated my need for both - I now slather on a bit of the product, follow it up with a touch of powder, and I'm good to go. Here I am two minutes after putting it on (no foundation, no powder):
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Maggie Panos
"But Maggie," you're thinking. "It's just green sunscreen, isn't it?"
No, dear reader, it isn't.
It's a chameleon product that starts as a mossy green, then transforms to fit your skin's shade. The Tiger Grass (an herb) covers inflammation, redness, and blemishes while helping to cure those issues. It's not just a Band-Aid; it's a recovery tool. Because it's naturally hydrating (and free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates), it's taken the place of my daily moisturizer, in addition to my sunscreen and foundation. My skin can breathe, because there's only one product coating it.
I've converted more than one friend to Cicapair, because there's nothing better than a product that actually works. No wonder it's been making the round on TikTok lately (oh wait, maybe that's where I first heard about it . . . )

Behind the Meteoric Rise of Dr. Woo, Hollywood's Most Coveted Tattoo Artist
Brian "Dr. Woo" was 14 years old when he got his first formal tattoo - a dragon on his left ankle, if you omit the impromptu stick-and-poke smiley face him and his friends DIYed at age 11 - but it was a decade before he even considered going into that line of work. It wasn't for a lack of interest, or even curiosity, as much as it was a preconceived notion of its plausibility.
"I was a tattoo collector from a very young age, but the deeper I got into that world, the further away being a tattoo artist seemed," he told POPSUGAR. "Being at the shop regularly, I got to see the pedigree some of these guys had reached. It's such a subversive culture, and I was intimidated. I was just some first-generation kid trying to find my own way."
Today, Dr. Woo is one of the most sought-after tattooists, with the biggest names in Hollywood (think: Hailey Bieber, Drake, and Kendall Jenner, to name a few) all clamoring for a coveted appointment. But at the time, he was working as a buyer for a high-end fashion boutique. Then came his first big break: legendary tattooist Mark Mahoney, of which Dr. Woo had gotten many a body art from, offered him a rare apprenticeship at his parlor - one of the most esteemed in LA at the time.
"I was put up against people telling me I wasn't going to make it, and everyone around me were the best in the business. It was good because it gave me something to look up to, but it was a harsh measuring system."
"It was three years of watching 10 tattooers at the top of their game, and it was great, but I was at the bottom of the totem pole. I did everything from sweeping to cleaning the toilets to ordering their food to bandaging their clients. Any problems that trickled down, I was at the bottom catching all of it."
That, he says, was the true test: "I was put up against so many people telling me I wasn't going to make it, and everyone around me were the best in the business. It was good because it gave me something to look up to, but at the same time, it was a harsh measuring system. You rate yourself against these titans. I was insecure about my own abilities, and there wasn't a lot of encouragement. But then I figured, like everything else, I'm just going to do what I can to the best of my capabilities, and have faith that if I attack a job without slacking, it'll pay off for me."

Joey King Wants You to Vote - and Get a Bob Haircut While You're at It
It's been a busy day full of errands for Joey King. Not only did she drop off her early mail-in ballot for the 2020 election, but she also got a major haircut. Instead of the long, layered style she's sported for the last few months, King is now rocking a short, soft blunt bob.
In a carousel of images posted on Oct. 8, King showed off her new hairstyle, complete with the "Vote" face mask that she wore to the salon. "Who has short hair now and voted today?!?! THIS GAL," read the caption. The second image she shared was of the designated box in Los Angeles where she dropped off her completed ballot and a thumbs up.
King is no stranger to short hair or experimenting with her look. Over the years, she's had everything from a buzz cut to bleached-blond hair, pink highlights, and bangs - and she always looks amazing.
