Skin Care Secrets From Women Who Work Out (Almost) Every Day

As a beauty girl, I have a love-hate relationship with the gym. I love it because it's the perfect opportunity to test out all the sample-size products I've been hoarding. I hate it because sweating ruins my hair for the entire week, and I always end up with a pimple.

When I do get to a class, I find myself glaring at the instructor with envy. How does she stay so put together after 20 reps of burpees? Her ponytail is perfect, her skin is flushed but not breaking out, and her abs - ugh. That's why I went straight to my #fitspo favorites to find out what's in their gym bag beauty arsenal, from the best face wipes to the strongest antiperspirant. Now that all my fitness issues are solved, maybe I'll sign up for that SoulCycle class . . . or not.

Why I Checked Myself Into Cat-Eye Rehab

We all have that one beauty product we can't live without - perhaps it's a bright pink lipstick you only rock on girl's nights out, or a pricey foundation you vow to only wear for weddings. Well, like you, I have a love affair with a product, and that's black liquid eyeliner. I remember leaving my high-school classrooms to spend 10 minutes in the bathroom perfecting what would later become my favorite makeup look ever: the cat-eye. The better I got at creating my wings, the more I wanted to wear it.

Since the day I was confident enough to effortlessly draw the lines above my lashes, the cat-eye has become my beauty addiction. Whether headed to dinner with girlfriends or running weekend errands, I never left home without my fierce liner. That all changed one day in June. As I stood on the subway platform in NYC, a train whizzed past and a tiny piece glass flew into my eye. In addition to the pain, it left me with a running, black disaster of eye makeup - my deconstructed, destroyed cat-eye. I looked like I has just spent the entire day watching romance movies on Netflix.

After making it home and running my eye under gallons of water, I was finally able to get the glass out. But a reoccurring discomfort the next day prevented me from grabbing my liquid liner and drawing a few swipes around my lashes. It was finally time to go 24 hours without cat-eye.

Throughout the day, I kept making frequent trips to the bathroom and checking my pocket mirror. While I still wore my everyday makeup, something felt off. I frantically checked in with my friends and my coworkers to be assured that I looked OK without my wings. They all assured me that I looked fine, but I felt naked without it. So, I decided to turn the situation around by checking myself into "cat-eye rehab" - a code for challenging myself to experiment with fresh looks for a week. Keep reading to see how I played with different colors and crayons to come up with unexpected new styles!

6 Reasons Lucy Hale Is the Most Relatable Beauty Icon Ever

When it comes to beauty, we're obviously obsessed. Must-try haircuts? Know 'em. Crisp cat eye? Mastered it. But putting all that knowledge into practice - as in, leaving the house looking like an Instagram model ready for her close-up - isn't always possible. Sometimes, we skip that perfect cat eye, throw our hair into a bun, and call it a day. Turns out, Pretty Litle Liars star Lucy Hale totally gets it.

The celebrity ambassador for Blowpro chatted with us during a brand event at Lord & Taylor, and our conversation felt like we were talking with an old friend. From reminiscing about throwback beauty trends to the fact that she sometimes just air-dries her hair, every answer was so freakin' real that we're now, admittedly, superfans.

Read on for all the reasons Lucy Hale should be your latest beauty icon, then check out her new and improved style from season six of PLL.

8 Skin Care Tips to Know Before You Hit the Slopes

While many may opt for a tropical getaway during Winter months, snow bunnies are busy booking ski trips with their buddies. There's lots to look forward to - brisk mountain air, shredding through the slaloms, and sipping on cocoa with a cutie in the chalet. But before you get excited about packing your favorite cold-weather accessories, focus on adjusting your beauty routine.

Winter - and specifically, skiing conditions - submit your skin to a crop of concerns you've likely never thought of, like awkward sunburns, frostbite, and extreme dehydration. We consulted Dr. Darrell S. Rigel from Schweiger Dermatology Group, who offered complexion solutions so you can hit the slopes with glowing (not ruddy!) skin.

  • Bring a stronger sunscreen. Did you know that the closer you get to the mountain's summit, the more UV you're exposed to? "You get six to eight percent extra UV intensity per every thousand feet, so it's important to use an SPF of at least 50," says Dr. Rigel.
  • Pack your products carefully. This is the reason we never stash our favorite beauty items in our checked luggage: high altitude can cause packaging to pop open. Make sure all lids and caps are screwed on extratight to avoid making a mess in your kit.
  • Ask your hotel for a humidifier. The central heating in your room has a drying effect on your skin. Using a humidifier will add moisture back into the air (and your complexion).
  • Apply Vaseline onto exposed skin to protect against frostbite. Before taking advantage of the fresh powder, slick on some petroleum jelly. According to Dr. Rigel, Vaseline acts as an insulator, meaning it will keep your body heat trapped behind the balm instead of seeping out through your skin, leaving it at risk.
  • Protect your neck (and chin). After smoothing on your sunscreen, add an extra layer to this area of your body. The sunlight bouncing off the snowy slopes increases your UV exposure by 40 percent! Wrap yourself up in a scarf for extra sun protection.
  • Avoid hot showers. While you may be chilly after a long day outdoors, go for a quick, warm shower instead of a luxuriously steamy one. Scalding water strips your skin of its natural oils, leaving you parched.
  • Cut back on alcohol. A hot toddy at the chalet sounds great, but limit yourself to just one. Alcohol is extremely dehydrating, especially at high altitutdes. Try to minimize alcohol consumption in high altitude, as alcohol dehydrates you.
  • Don't forget to drink water! No matter how many times you've heard this, it's worth repeating: consuming plenty of H2O will hydrate your complexion from the inside out.

Couple Cuts Off Several Feet of Hair, Look Like Completely New People

We all know someone who could use a bit of a style update, but the friends of Tim and Wendy White found it necessary to stage an intervention. The duo referred to themselves as "the rock and roll couple" due to their extremely lengthy locks (and the fact that Tim was a bass guitarist).

The Whites appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2003, where they confessed that they hadn't gotten haircuts for decades - Wendy's enormous, matronly bun had been growing since 1992, while her husband hadn't touched his strands since 1985. Oprah and her team gave them two major makeovers. The incredible transformation that follows will make you cry. Sure, they look like completely different people, but the Whites' love for one another is what really got our tears flowing.

After the two see each other, they can't stop hugging and kissing. Their new looks seem to have reignited their passion. Unfortunately, this love story has a sad ending. Tim passed away in 2008 after a massive heart attack at the young age of 48. Wendy has since grown out her hair again and joined her husband's band. While she is devastated by her loss, she is glad that the world got to see how much they loved each other. "I wish everybody could express the way they feel about the ones they love like that." Prepare for your midweek cry!

Color Melting Is the New Technique That Will Make Any Dye Job Look Natural

More so than ever before, we find ourselves doing double takes when passing women with incredible hair color on the street (or asking for details about their salon). It's not entirely due to the advent of unicorn hues, either - there's a new technique that makes dye look more natural than ever before, especially ombré color.

If you've ever taken your dark hair to a blond ombré, you know there's usually a stark line of demarcation that comes from bleaching. Sure, adding dye on top will soften that line, and methods like balayage will make it even softer, but it still didn't look completely natural - until color melting. "Melting is a technique that blends the highlights with the base color of the hair so you don't have any harsh lines," George Papanikolas, Matrix StyleLink stylist, explained to BuzzFeed.

Instead of creating that ombré look with normal highlights, melting uses an assortment of hues close in tone to create a blurring (or melting) effect. This makes any hair color appear as if it grew naturally out of your scalp . . . but only you and your stylist know the truth. Read on to see more examples of this technique.

Yes, Even Short-Haired Girls Can Rock a Waterfall Braid

If you're growing out your fringe or sporting shorter strands, achieving Pinterest-perfect braids can be a struggle, as plaits made from a cropped coif tend to unravel faster. And if you have blunt styles and layers, you know they make intricate fishtail, caged, and waterfall braids even more challenging. But there is good news! Short-haired ladies can achieve a trendy braid, too - just take it sideways across your head (where all the length is!) by creating a faux headband.

This quick tutorial from Cute Girls Hairstyles demonstrates how to master the perfect waterfall crown braid. It's a lot easier than it looks. Seriously: the only thing you need to know is how to weave a three-strand braid.

By creating loops, performing slight pulls, and using the pancaking technique, the front of your hair will be transformed from your usually styled mane into a braided hair accessory. The best part about the style is that once you master the technique, creating it becomes a breeze. This makes it a perfect way to change up your daily look (and to keep your strands out of your face). Practice in front of a mirror as you watch along!

The Stella McCartney-Approved 4-Step Plan to Bringing Postholiday Skin Back to Life

Stella McCartney presented her Autumn 2016 collection in LA just last week, and if we had to sum up the vibe of the night in one word, it would be youthful. Before the stars - Gwyneth! Johnny! Mary J! - arrived at Hollywood's historic Amoeba Music record store, we went backstage with skin care brand Sunday Riley to see how they achieved the models' effervescent, megabright skin.

Considering that many of us have spent the last few months hibernating in the dry, artificial heat of our homes and offices, all while indulging in a holiday diet that consists primarily of booze and sugar cookies, "fresh" and "plump" might not be the first words that come to mind when we see our faces in the mirror. But, it turns out, the glowing visages we saw at Stella are within reach. They weren't the work of a crazy arsenal of products or hours spent at the sink. Instead, the dewy, healthy faces were achieved with five products over the course of about 10 minutes.

"It's all about that really natural, glowing, refreshed skin," Sunday Riley Account Executive Ryan Nelson told us. "When you're cleansed, hydrated, and exfoliated properly, your foundation is just going to glide on so much easier, and when it doesn't have anything blocking it from your skin, it won't fall off as easily." The secret weapon backstage was Sunday Riley's yet-to-be-released Tidal moisturizer, a blue, faintly herbal-smelling cream that goes on rich but disappears just as quickly as 2015 did. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait to stock our medicine cabinet with our own jar until March 4, when it hits shelves.

In the meantime, though, Nelson gave us a four-step regimen that basically works like CPR on skin that's flatlined after a tough Winter. While we can't promise that a modeling agency will sign you after following it, you'll at least look and feel revived.

14 Coffin Nail Art Designs That Speak to Your Soul

If you scroll through Kylie Jenner's Instagram feed, you'll notice she not only has serious contouring skills, but also a love for impressive manicures. It's not difficult to tell the difference between her and her siblings' nails - Kylie always goes all out. And time and time again we see her coming back to one shape, the coffin nail. This style falls right in between a basic french mani and the stiletto design, which makes it practical yet cool enough to rock at a party. Though Halloween may be over, the eerily named coffin nails here will be your go-to style all season long.

12 Pink Lipsticks That Every Woman Should Own

So, you've already found your perfect red lipstick . . . and have bought several backup tubes, in addition to deeper crimson shades and vampy burgundies. But have you found the best pink pout hue yet? As many reds as there are out there, it seems that the options for pink are far more varying (and confusing), making it challenging to pick your ideal color. You can buy a lip product in mauve-rose tints to neon fuchsias and every tone in between!

Thankfully, one Reddit user related so strongly to this plight that she compiled a lipstick spreadsheet of fellow Redditors' favorite hues, pink included. In anticipation of Valentine's Day, we've combed through the colors and picked our favorites, then we scoured the review sections on Sephora, Ulta, and more beauty retailers to grab quotes from the products' biggest fans - you! Read on to shop the best shades.

This Genius Makeup Hack Compares Contouring to Wearing a Bra

When it comes to contouring, I've always been a bit cocky. "It's easy!" I'd tell my girlfriends, while painting lines on their faces: one for highlighter, followed by a swipe of blush in the middle, and bronzer on the bottom. I had no idea how badly I was missing the point. That is, until Make Up For Ever artist Lijha Stewart came into my office and blew my mind. She showed me a makeup hack - comparing contouring to a bra holding up breasts - and since then, my cheekbones have been on point.

Let's back up: Lijha was visiting, introducing me to Make Up For Ever's new Pro Sculpting palettes. These cream-color quads are offered in four shades for light, medium, tan, and dark skin and will be available in March ($45). The lightweight tin hosts a matte base color, bronzer, highlighter, and blush. It's almost impossible to mess up using these formulas since they blend so seamlessly into the skin. Lijha, however, provided me with a sculpting technique that took my skills to the next level.

In the photo above, you can see how I contoured using the techniques I am about the describe. The left side of my face (which you see on the right) is contoured while the right is not. Though the makeup application is light, it's visible how much smoother my skin looks and how much more defined my cheek is. Oh, the power of makeup! Boom.

Find Your Cheekbones

Lijha instructed to me physically feel where my cheekbones are and make sure to put the bronzer exactly there (rather than eyeball it like I usually do).

"When you're very first starting out, it's really important to explore your face shape and use your hands," she said.

I used to bring my contour line almost to my lips, but now I know that it should extend about two thirds down from my hairline towards my mouth, because that is where my bone structure actually ends. And I never went right up to my hairline - I always started about an inch in. Lijha instructed me to go right up to the hairline, because if I accidentally put too much product there, it won't matter - my mane can cover it.

Apply the Color

Drop the sponge or brush. Lijha advised to use your fingers. Tap the color on with one finger, and then use another clean one to blend it.

"You don't keep depositing color," she explained. "A huge issue when you're highlighting and contouring is that you get all of this beautiful product on, and then you don't know where to blend it, so you end up with stripes on your face or a really muddy, patchy look."

Follow the Order

Go from light to dark when it comes to contouring. "A lot of time I think people focus on the dark, but think about adding your light first because once you add your light, the natural depth in the face will come forward on their own," Lijha noted.

About That Bra Theory

The next time your significant other pokes fun at your 20-minute contouring routine, explain this sexy idea.

"My theory on contouring when you're very first starting out, you want to think of your cheek as a boob and a bra," Lijha said. "Your cheek has three different parts. It has the underwire, which is the contour and extends from the top of the ear and goes down. So where does your blush go? Right in the center of your cheek, and that's the fleshy portion of your breast, where you want the most volume."

She went on to describe the secret weapon, the highlighter, aka your cleavage. "We have all tricks when we're buying a nice push0up bra - perhaps it's getting racer back or a front clip that brings your cleavage up a notch," she said. "That's exactly what you can think of when you're using a strobing color. It's taking your cleavage, or cheekbone, to the next level and really pops that highlight. Apply it on the highest part of your cheekbone, where you want a lot of volume."

This Man Beauty Balm Will Be His New Best Friend

If you're looking for something special to give to your guy, make him an all-in-one beauty balm that will treat, well . . . almost everything! Use on dry, cracked hands or as pomade for perfect hair, and this concoction can be personalized with your man's favorite scents. Made from all-natural ingredients, the balm comes together in a matter of minutes, which makes it a great last-minute gift.

What You'll Need:

  • Small saucepan
  • 4 tablespoons beeswax
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • Small heat-safe bowl
  • Kitchen towel
  • 10-20 drops essential oil
  • Spoon or wooden skewer (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda or cornstarch (optional)
  • Hand mixer (optional)
  • Small sealable container

Directions:

  1. To make the awesome beauty balm, create a homemade double boiler by placing a small saucepan filled halfway with water over medium heat. Now measure and add the beeswax and coconut oil to a small heat-proof bowl and place over the saucepan until the mixture has melted together.
  1. Carefully remove the bowl from the heat, and place on top of a folded kitchen towel. This holds the bowl in place and protects your countertop. Beeswax and coconut oil are wonderfully nurturing and great for skin and hair. To elevate the beauty balm, add a blend of essential oils, most of which are also antibacterial and antifungal. We used a combination of tea tree, cedarwood, and rosemary essential oils. Gently stir with a spoon or use a wooden skewer, which you can throw away when you're finished with the beauty balm.
  1. To add a bit of extra texture to the beauty balm, which helps exfoliate skin and hold hair in place, sprinkle one-quarter teaspoon of baking soda or cornstarch into the mixture before giving a quick blend with your hand mixer. If you don't have any on hand, the balm works just fine if you skip it.
  1. Once blended, carefully pour the beauty balm into the small sealable container, let set, and you're ready to give it to your favorite guy. We upcycled a metal tin and coated the top with chalkboard paint for a fun, finished look.

Makes four ounces of beauty balm. If stored in a cool spot, the balm is good to use until it's gone.

How to Get Victoria's Secret Bombshell Waves IRL

There's nothing more intimidating than being on a flight with 40 of the most gorgeous women on the planet - the Victoria's Secret Angels. Such was the case when I flew overseas last December with the stunning crew for the brand's annual fashion show. Obviously we can't genetically morph into these glamorous models (some of us were born shrimpy!), but what we can do is take note from their beauty books, specifically when it comes to hair.

While I was abroad, I met with GHD hair pro Lorna Moore, who was part of the official runway glam squad. She showed me how real girls can get model-inspired bombshell waves. "It's sexy, soft, touchable hair," she explained of the classic Victoria's Secret look. "It seems like you can run your hands through it, and you're not going to get stuck, 'cause there's nothing sexy about a head of hair full of hair spray. It's effortless hair. And that's what encompasses sexy hair."

To get you prepped for your hot Valentine's Day date, keep reading to discover our bombshell waves hair DIY. Then, learn two genius tricks to preserve your style.

This Is the Coziest Way to Wear Nail Polish This Winter

As temperatures drop, all we want to do is stay inside, snuggle up in a cozy sweater, and binge-watch Netflix. Unfortunately, those aren't the most realistic goals (rent has to be paid, after all), but now our nails can speak from our truly lazy souls. Three-dimensional sweater nail art is here!

To create this look, nail artists use a dotting tool to carefully layer gel lacquer in cable-knit patterns. You can add pearls, glitter, and flocking powder to make the style look even more realistic. While the technique may be time consuming, spending that session in the salon chair is worth it! The finished manicure is supercharming and an adorable accent to any Winter look. Read on for proof.

Coconut Oil Beauty Videos Guarantee You'll Use It Wisely

Yes, you've all heard the buzz about coconut oil - but do you actually know how you should be using it in your beauty routine?

If 2015 was the year that this kitchen-cabinet product became a powerhouse force for health and beauty, we want 2016 to be the year we all fully understand how to take advantage of its long list of benefits.

There are more common uses, including as a hair mask, for pulling, and to remove makeup. But there is also a range of more unusual uses, including as deodorant, allergy reliever, and lip gloss. To help you break down both the ways and reasons you can use this single ingredient, we're turning to videos that can show, not tell, the hands-on ways you should be incorporating coconut oil into your repertoire.
