The Store-Bought Weight-Loss Snack You Should Be Eating but Aren't
For many years, beef jerky had a bad rap, but the tide has shifted in its favor. Ever since becoming a preferred snack of Paleo dieters and CrossFit enthusiasts, it's been reintroduced into the healthy mainstream, and many clean, low-carb eaters looking to shed a few pounds are singing jerky's praises.
Snacking on jerky in between meals is an ideal way to get protein in your diet, a must if you're trying to lose weight. One study published in The FASEB Journal shows that in addition to a regular exercise routine, doubling your protein intake may be the key to losing fat pounds without dropping muscle mass. In addition to offering 6.6 grams of protein per piece, beef jerky doesn't raise your level of insulin, one of the hormones that affects how your body stores fat.

With that said, not all jerky is created equally. The best option to ensure your jerky is free of artificial ingredients is to make your own. If you can't dedicate the kitchen time, just be sure to opt for a brand with all-natural ingredients that's free of preservatives and nitrates and isn't too high in sodium. In a day when "fraxel" is the next word on the lips of every freckle-faced person I know, I'm delighted that British photographer Brock Elbank is celebrating these natural spots. In a photo series appropriately named Freckles, he is sharing stunning images via Instagram of those who have the skin specks.
I asked him how this project came about. He said: "When we lived in Sydney in early 2012, I played for a Saturday football team. My teammate John Lloyd's 10-year-old lad Eddie came to watch a match. Eddie had this face full of freckles like I'd never seen before. They were very intense. He was great-looking character, so I asked John if I could shoot a portrait and that was the start of it. I then become obsessed with the subject, searching out for the most diverse mix I can to document the subject. When we moved back to the UK, I had to put the series on hold while I shot my #Project60. It was idea for Beard Season's melanoma charity, and it was exhibited at Somerset House as Beard in March 2015. But now I'm in full production of Freckles, and luckily I'm receiving the same feedback as I did with #Project60 through Instagram and other social media. Subjects are travelling from all over, including Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, Norway, amongst others to be photographed."

While you can always shred chicken with your hands, this tends to give you chicken chunks rather than fluffy shreds. Instead, shred the chicken with a fork. It's easier to tear the meat with a metal utensil, plus it's a cleaner, more sanitary process.
- Start with poached chicken that is cooled slightly but still warm. What's pictured is a skinless, boneless chicken breast, poached in chicken broth for flavor and saltiness.
- Use one hand or a fork to hold the chicken steady. With the other hand, use another fork to scrap and tear the chicken flesh into small, shredded pieces. When the fork becomes full of chicken shreds, use your fingers or another fork to pull the pieces off the fork and onto the plate. Repeat the process until the chicken is completely shredded.
- Transfer the shredded chicken to an airtight container and refrigerate for two to four days. Use the shredded chicken in casseroles, salads, tacos, curries, and sandwiches. Here are a few of our favorite uses for shredded chicken breast.

When it comes to makeup, I'm a very simple girl. My beauty routine in the morning consists of concealer - for those genetic and perpetual under-eye bags (thanks, Dad) - a little bit of bronzing powder to give my pale Winter skin some life, and a swipe of mascara (see above left photo - yes, I have makeup on there). On my way out the door, the only thought I give to my lips - my always-dry lips - is that I should hit them with some chapstick. Never lipstick.
I had a conversation about my "fear" of lipstick - the bold colors, awkward smudging, getting weird looks from the general public because my teeth are red - with our beauty editors, and I could see the glimmer of excitement in their eyes almost immediately. At their first chance, they presented me with a lipstick challenge to attempt to make me a convert, and the rest is history.
Toward the end of December, as everyone began thinking about New Year's resolutions, I decided that 2016 should be the year I broaden my lipstick horizons. It was then that my challenge from the beauty team was born: wear 12 different bold (for me) lipstick shades in 12 days and report back on my general findings.

- Wear the appropriate clothing: It may sound silly, but just like wearing business attire makes you sharper and more professional at work, the same can be said for the kitchen. Pull back your hair, tie on the apron, and wear comfortable shoes that cover your toes. You'll be appreciative if a knife or something very hot or heavy falls near (or on) your feet.
- Read the recipe, then reread it again: Familiarize yourself with the recipe including the list of ingredients, tools, and techniques. It helps to be confident about the next step in the cooking process, so you may only need to glance at the recipe while watching the food.
- Set up your mise: The French term mise en place means "setting in place," and it's the process of prepping all of the ingredients and pulling out all of the equipment needed ahead of the cooking time. Use small glass or aluminum prep bowls and organize them according to the order you will use them. You'll be amazed by how much easier it makes the actual cooking process, so you are not scrambling to measure or chop something quickly.
- Keep the area clean: A dirty kitchen is a sign of a scattered, stressed cook. Develop the habit of returning ingredients back to their proper place in the pantry after using them, and quickly rinse and store dirty bowls in the sink. Keep a damp sponge handy to whip down any spills. Cleaning as you cook is a win-win situation: you won't have to do it later, and you'll feel better organized and in control.
- Practice, practice, practice: Ultimately, cooking fast requires practice and a lot of it. Professional chefs chop cases full of vegetables before they dice perfectly cubed, confetti-like brunoise. By your third try in the kitchen, you'll start to channel Julia Child and have the utmost courage of conviction behind the stove.

It seems that getting stronger is on almost everyone's New Year's resolution list this year. But just wanting it won't make it happen. Just going to the gym and lifting weights without a plan won't necessarily make you stronger either. There are many nuances you'll need to consider before even getting to the gym. Here are some tried-and-true methods to get you stronger much faster than you ever thought possible!
According to Micah LaCerte, CPT and owner of Hitch Fit, "The only way to get stronger is continuing to add weight to the movements you are doing in the gym."
But if lifting heavy things alone were the solution, nobody would ever have the dreaded muffin top or arm jiggle. The secret is in how you approach your weight-training efforts. According to trainer Brian Pankau, CPT, you should focus on basic moves and approaches. That means doing simple moves like squats, lunges, chest presses, arm curls, rows, and the like while remembering to "add more weight when the final set for a specific exercise is completed too easily." The focus should be on hitting every major muscle group in your body with this progressive approach.

Now that you know what moves to do and how to increase weight, you need to know about reps and sets. Sure, you could just lift and lift until you've exhausted your body, but weightlifting has a simpler and more scientific approach. Your best bet is to focus on doing a few sets of each exercise for about 10 to 12 repetitions, or reps, each. That means you would do each exercise about 30 to 36 times each, but with a 30-to-60-second pause between every set of 10 to 12 reps. This allows your muscles to rest in between sets, so you can get the most out of them every time you lift.

How do you start? Glad you asked! According to Pankau: "Beginners should always stick to lighter loads while working on proper form and technique for exercises. This develops better training habits in the earlier stages and also increases joint range of motion properly to prevent injuries."
But that isn't everything. In fact, LaCerte told us that getting stronger really comes down to two essential factors: proper nutrition in conjunction with planned, progressive weightlifting.
The nutrition part may sound simple, but LaCerte believes that "you need to have a lot of focus on it to stay on track - when you're building strength and muscle, you need more calories than when you're trying to cut weight." While you may think that the weightlifting aspect is the more complex part of the equation, the truth is that it really comes down to the basic principle of "lifting heavier to get strong, which builds muscle," according to LaCerte.
