This Twisted Chignon Can Take You From Spin Class to the Office

January is notoriously the busiest month for gym-goers, and if you're committing to better fitness habits this year, then you should do it with style. To help up your workout hair game, we asked celebrity stylist Sarah Potempa to create five easy braided looks that will hold your strands in place in the most eye-catching way. Bobbi Brown makeup artist Kim Soane painted the faces of our fitness blogger models, Chase Lindsay Rosen of Athleisurely and Evann Clingan of her eponymous site, using long-wear, waterproof products. Everything was photographed at the iconic Chelsea Piers, which boasts a bevy of creative sweat-inducing classes. Every day this week, we will be revealing a new look - such as this French fishtail ponytail or this braided ballerina bun.

Get through the mid-week slump by taking a heart-pumping indoor cycling class, but don't worry about washing your sweaty hair after. If you put it in this twisted updo, it will stay perfectly - so you can conquer SoulCycle, rinse off, and make it to your morning meeting looking polished. Plus, it's much easier to DIY than it looks!

"A great tip for making a boring bun into a more interesting bun or twisted updo is taking one ponytail and splitting it into multiple ponytails," Sarah noted. "This will add to the width of the style and create more dimension. It will give the illusion that you have a lot more hair and the style is a lot more intricate, when it's really simple."

These Adorable Bite-Size Macarons Will Be Your Newest Obsession

POPSUGAR Photography / Erin Cullum

Diamonds Macarons are a girl's best friend . . . especially mini macarons. That's why we knew we had to be among the first tasters of these adorable bite-size macarons by NYC-based cupcakery Baked by Melissa. The beloved baker is branching out of cupcakes (and cupcake hybrids) for the first time ever with this bite-size spin on the traditional French dessert. These tiny pastry creations are the ultimate midweek treat to satisfy anyone's sweet tooth, and the flavor lineup is dynamite: cookie dough, sugar cookie, red velvet, double chocolate, snickerdoodle, and salted caramel.

POPSUGAR Photography / Erin Cullum

They're small in size, but big in flavor - each macaron is double stuffed with a light and creamy filling, so the filling-to-shell ratio is perfect. The double chocolate is particularly noteworthy, offering a rich, fudgy chocolate center sandwiched between two chocolate cookies.

POPSUGAR Photography / Erin Cullum

They're small enough that you get to try a few at once, which makes the experience even better. If you're suddenly craving your own, you're in luck because there's a secret presale starting on Jan. 14 (you're welcome). You can order an assortment from Baked by Melissa by searching 'macaron' on the site.

10 Helpful Ways to Hack Your Stress

When stress takes over, it can really throw you for a loop. Stop anxious feelings before they happen with these 10 helpful tips and tricks. They'll help you feel calm, cool, collected, and happy all day long.

  1. Wake up earlier: Snoozing begins your day on a stressful note. Waking up five to 15 minutes earlier leaves you extra time to welcome the day and relax before heading to the office. Just get up when your alarm goes off.
  2. Get to yoga: Connecting movement with breath has been proven as one of the best all-natural ways to beat (and prevent) stress. Do this short sequence every day to stay balanced.
  3. Listen to music: Turn up some sweet tunes and let it go. Research has shown that lying down and listening to music is as effective as massage - a big win for anyone on a budget who needs a stress-relieving outlet.
  4. Exercise often: Exercise boosts your feel-good endorphins, and new research is showing a link between regular exercise and the less well-known neuromodulator norepinephrine, which may help the brain deal with stress more efficiently.
  5. Keep peppermint close: In a NASA-funded study, researchers found that during their commute, subjects who smelled peppermint decreased their anxiety and fatigue levels by 20 percent and decreased frustration by 25 percent. Sip on peppermint tea or keep peppermint essential oil on hand.
  6. Stop procrastinating: When you put off tasks you're dreading, it only makes it harder to do later. Don't let this happen to you. Do your best to get these things out of the way, so you can direct your energy and attention elsewhere.
  7. Start meditating: A short meditation can change your whole day. Breathing deep and sinking into relaxation is more than a hippie practice - it rewires your brain to be more resilient when stressful situations arise.
  8. Write it down: Instead of trying to remember all your tasks, keep writing things, both large and small, down as they come up. This way, you don't deal with unnecessary stress at the end of the day when you realize you've forgotten something.
  9. Keep things clean: Coming home to an apartment that's in disarray leaves you with chaotic feelings. Make your bed, wipe down surfaces, do your dishes, and follow these other things people with clean homes do every day.
  10. Go to bed: Not getting adequate sleep can lead to major stress the following day. If you constantly find yourself stressed when the lights go off, try this anxiety-relieving trick that will help you fall asleep fast, so you wake up calm and rested.

Superset Your Workouts to Save Time, but Add Intensity

After missing a session with my trainer last week, I poked his brain on how to maximize my workouts when I'm short on time. One word: supersets. While unfamiliar with the term, I had already experienced the concept of supersets in our training sessions. During supersets, you pair up two different sets of exercises, one right after the other, without resting in between sets. By doing so, you save time, add intensity, and help build muscle while also getting your heart rate up - hello, cardio!

Related: The Weight-Lifting Technique That Will Change Your Body

Supersets are beneficial for cutting down time spent in the gym, but they're also a way to maximize what you're doing while there. If you don't have time for separate cardio and strength sessions, supersets come in handy. Because you move quickly through strength-training exercises, your heart responds with an elevated rate as it pumps oxygen to your muscles. Supersets can also aid in overloading muscle groups that need more targeting.

Depending on your goal, supersets can be used to work opposing or the same muscle groups. Work opposing muscle groups (like the legs and then the arms) to save on rest time; one muscle group gets to rest while the other muscle group works. And to increase the intensity of your workout, focus on the same muscles, but with different exercises. You can also do cardio supersets, which pairs a set of strength-training moves with a short burst of intense cardio. The last time I worked with my trainer, I did a cardio superset that involved sets of push-ups, squats, and lunges intermixed with two minutes on the elliptical at 90 RPM.

Interested? Here are a few supersets to try during your next workout:

  • Opposing muscle group superset idea: bicep curls followed by triceps kickbacks.
  • Same muscle group superset idea: wall sits followed by squats.
  • And the one I love to hate: push-ups followed by hip lifts.

This Heart-Wrenching Red Lip Beauty DIY Will Make You Cry

In 2014, Reshma was a pretty teenager living in Mumbai, India, looking forward to completing school and finding a job. But in one day, her life was completely shattered. During a visit to the northern town of Allahabad, where she would be taking an exam, her brother-in-law attacked her with sulfuric acid. Reshna lost her left eye, while her right eye is partially closed and infected. She suffers from severe burns and disfigurement and needs cosmetic surgery to correct the tight muscles around her mouth.

Unfortunately, Reshma's is not an isolated case. According to the BBC, India sees approximately 1,000 acid attacks each year, which is claimed to be a low estimate as many victims are too humiliated to report. Through a simple red lip tutorial, Reshma is raising awareness for fellow victims and the organization Make Love Not Scars. This group has started a petition calling for the Indian government to ban the sale of acid (which some people use to clean their homes) to the average consumer. "You'll find a red lipstick easily in the market . . . just like concentrated acid," Reshma warns.

Watch Reshma's moving video, then make a difference by signing this important petition.

Freezable Casseroles: Texan-Inspired King Ranch Chicken

Growing up in Texas, almost every mom-and-pop restaurant has a fridge full of take-away casseroles, and king ranch chicken is one of the most popular. It's a hearty meal for cold, dark Winter nights, especially during the crazy holiday season. Plus, it's always good to have a casserole in the freezer for a homemade yet simple dinner option.

For those unfamiliar with king ranch chicken, it's essentially a Mexican-flavored casserole, filled with cheese, chicken, aromatic vegetables, and corn tortillas.

Here's the greatest part about this casserole: it's easy to double - or even triple! - this recipe to stock up your freezer.

Serve this with a crunchy green salad, collard greens, or other favorite vegetable. Keep reading for my favorite king ranch chicken casserole recipe.

Kim Kardashian Takes On Barbie's Signature Look For a Photo Shoot

Kim Kardashian seems to love keeping her fans on their toes by switching up her strands. The reality star stunned us all when she showed up at Paris Fashion Week with a platinum mane, but that wasn't her first stint as a blonde.

In a recent post on her app, KimKardashianWest.com, she revealed behind-the-scenes photos from a shoot for Kurv Magazine from 2009. In one snap, Kim sports an ice-blond wig with bangs like Barbie (or Nicki Minaj). And in another image, she amped up the volume with sky-high golden blond curls and a J Lo-esque spray tan.

"This was the first time I had ever dyed my hair and I was working with [photographer] Clyde Haygood," Kim explained. "He was determined to get this hair color photographed because he knew I was only keeping it for a month - I had to shoot my first perfume campaign and they wanted me back to dark hair."

While we will always be fans of her signature brunette locks, we love when Kim tries new styles. Maybe Kylie's mane-changing mania was first inspired by this shoot! Read on to see the doll-like photos.

How to Build Up to Rotated Triangle Pose

In order to do Rotated Triangle comfortably, flexible hips and hamstrings, as well as side-to-side mobility in your spine, are musts. This yoga sequence is designed to open those tight areas, which runners, cyclists, skiers, and desk-bound workers will appreciate. Twisting poses like this can also stimulate digestion (which helps keep you regular) and prevent a bloated belly. Once you practice this sequence, the next time you're asked to do this standing pose, you'll squeal in excitement, or maybe you just won't curse the teacher under your Darth Vader ujjayi breath. Move through these nine poses on the right side, and then repeat on the left.

Things I Learned From Sabotaging My Whole30 Plan (and Why I'll Try It Again)

I tried and failed to complete the Whole30 challenge - but it's OK, because the experience has set me up to succeed on my next try. When I received the Whole30 cookbook ($18) in the mail, I was intrigued and inspired to turn my health around with this diet plan of no grains, legumes, sugar, or alcohol. "Paleo on crack," is what some people even call it. And I stuck to it fervently until day 18. That's the day I effed it all up and had a glass of Champagne . . . followed by a loaf of bread. And just as the book predicted, once a cheater, always a cheater. The next day I put cream in my coffee. So what did I learn, and why will I try this crazy diet again? Take a look so you can avoid the same mistakes.

Your cravings are temporary. Your pride is forever.

The book claims that your food cravings only last a matter of minutes - which I found to be true. They even warn you that after several weeks of not consuming alcohol and sugar, you'll start to see it everywhere, also true. By day 18, I acted like a partially rabid animal around the sight of sugar and Champagne (my favorite beverage of choice). But as soon as I took a sip of the good stuff, it didn't make me feel good! Why? Because I had broken the agreement I had made to myself of sticking to this diet for 30 days. The thrill of "sinning" didn't outweigh the shame. OK, I get it now - submitting to my cravings doesn't taste as good as "tiger blood" (how you supposedly feel the second half of the program).

Sugar and alcohol are the worst things ever.

Part of the Whole30's purpose is to discover which foods send your health in a downward spiral (make you bloated, exhausted, break out, etc). Even though I only got through day 18, I discovered alcohol and sugar are my worst enemies. One beer or one chocolate chip cookie is enough to give me a raging headache. As much as I hate to admit it, I have to limit myself on these beloved treats, and I'm appreciative that this diet helped me see that dairy/gluten/legumes aren't the big dietary issues for me.

If you didn't make it yourself, chances are it has sugar (or alcohol) (or gluten) (or everything noncompliant).

The book tries to set you up for success when dining out. The problem is, this diet is complicated. I tried to explain to waiters, "It's gluten-free, sugar-free, alcohol-free - ghee, but no dairy." Their eyes glazed after I told them, "No, this isn't an allergy-related diet." And you know what? After the exhausting back-and-forth, I'd still end up with a burger with [sugared] pickles or a salad with [sugared] dressing. There's no avoiding it unless you buy from sources that are Paleo. But even Paleo has different rules, and you may end up with something coated in coconut sugar. It's exhausting. So, I'm determined to cook 100 percent of my meals next time during a month in which I can commit to eating at home.

Get the support of your friends and family.

I tried to do this thing solo - bad mistake, as most of my family members and friends were enablers, taunting me to cheat on my plan. Even though the Whole30 talks about its supportive forum, nothing beats having a friend, significant other, or family member on board with you. So the next time I try this thing out, I'm enlisting the support of a buddy!

But enough about the fact I only made it to Whole17 1/2. I'm going to try this challenge again and complete it, because I learned so much already from this experience. I did drop a jeans size and five pounds (in addition to sticking to a workout regime), so the diet does help shed excess weight. I got a glimmer of "tiger blood" as my workouts were way, way stronger, my hips and back pain miraculously stopped, and my menstrual cramps became nonexistent. I also felt like I was much more productive and focused at work, especially since midmeal hunger didn't send me scrounging around for snacks. There's too much good stuff to deny that the Whole30 does make a difference. Therefore, I'm telling you all now, world. I'm trying the Whole30 again in Februrary, and I'm sticking to it.

Build Your Dream Body by Lifting Heavy and Light

Ever plan to go to the gym and stop dead in your tracks because you just don't know what to do? Maybe your goals are too broad? Maybe you're expecting too much? How can you really lose weight, gain lean muscle, and build your dream body with just one simple workout plan that doesn't require you move into the gym for the next year? Clearly, you're expecting too much from your efforts, right? Wrong! There is a way to reshape your body by losing fat and gaining muscle without spending countless hours in the gym. What do you have to do? Lift heavy weights to create lean muscle and lift light weights to promote fat loss. The best part? You can be in and out of the gym in less than 30 minutes each day. Here's how!

Related: Should You Run Before You Lift?

The heavy and light strength-training plan combines a couple of the most fundamental principles of lifting weights. The intention is to do an exercise for four sets with a heavy weight and low reps (up to six) and then another exercise that targets the same muscle for four more sets with higher reps (up to 12), but with a lighter weight. According to personal trainer Brian Pankau, CPT, you need to take "two to three minutes of rest between heavy [sets], and 45 to 60 seconds between lighter sets."

How does this plan work? When you lift heavy weights your muscles fatigue and ultimately grow (you won't look like a bodybuilder - we promise). From there, you work the same muscles with lighter weights to totally exhaust them, which burns more calories, creates a leaner body composition, and increases endurance. Muscles grow, body fat decreases, and you're only doing two exercises per body part. According to Anthony J. Yeung, CSCS, with this plan, "you'll burn more calories, shed fat, add more strength, and feel more energetic in daily life."

As a result of this significant caloric depletion, certified personal trainer and owner of HitchFit.com Micah Lacerte cautions that, "Nutrition will play a big role in what sort of results someone will get performing this plan, but if they are on [the proper type of diet], then this style of training will be excellent for building lean muscle." You have to make the effort to eat six small meals each day that all include some form of protein - with specific care to ensure you're getting protein before and after you work out.

While this plan can definitely work, it may not be for everyone. Pankau believes that while "fat loss is going to occur, [it may] not be fast enough for somebody with too much excess fat, so this plan is great for light and medium builds, but not really meant for heavier-set people."

What does this mean for you? For tight and toned triceps, a good combo would be overhead triceps extensions with a heavy weight and triceps kickbacks with lighter weights. For leaner, more sculpted legs, do leg presses with a heavy weight, and lunges with light dumbbells at your sides, or no added weights at all! For stronger, tighter biceps, heavy hammer curls and light preacher curls. The key is to do two moves per body part, one heavy, one light as described above. This will exhaust your muscles, promoting growth while leaning out your body. If you're in average shape, you can look way above average in less time. If you're in good shape, you may want to move to a beachfront property soon. Enjoy!

Gwyneth: "My Girlfriends Make Me Braver"

If you're vegan, love makeup or are mildly obsessed with Gwyneth Paltrow, you'll be happy to hear the actress has officially launched an organic cosmetics line with Juice Beauty. Gwyneth is known for her clean, healthy lifestyle, and as Creative Director of the brand, she worked to create 78 pieces for the line - from the formula to the packaging - including liquid lipsticks and a skin-blurring primer.

I had the opportunity to sit down with the Oscar winner and mother of two to discuss why she chose Juice Beauty, the inspiration behind naming the products - the lipsticks are named after her girlfriends, like Drew, Cameron and Chelsea, while the lip creams are named after her favorite wines - and learned just how much she knows about the beauty industry. "Normally you'll get a red that's that red from crushed insects or lead. Lead is what makes lipstick red," said Paltrow, explaining that the Phyto-Pigments (the namesake of the line) were created with crushed flowers, which gives a gorgeous color payoff without sacrificing the integrity of the product.

Every beauty girl knows that unless your liquid liner game is consistently on point, you should NOT attempt a cat eye when running late in the morning. But this March, the innovators at Beautyblender will ensure you'll have a flawless flick no matter your skill level with the brand's newest product, Liner Designer ($16).
