Exactly How the New Cloverfield Movie Is Related to the 2008 Original
The film 10 Cloverfield Lane is clearly a follow-up to 2008's thrilling horror hit Cloverfield, but is it technically a sequel? The new movie is definitely as thrilling as the first, but the similarities nearly stop there. If you're planning on seeing the film and don't want to know what happens at the end, now is a good time to stop reading.
The new story revolves around Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a woman who wakes up cuffed to a pipe in a bunker after an intense car accident. The majority of the film takes place in the underground safehouse as she gets to know the mysterious man keeping her down there (John Goodman) and his friend (John Gallagher Jr.). Goodman's character claims that some sort of nuclear or chemical attack has happened and the air is poisoned, which is why he won't even consider letting Michelle out. Except for the nonstop tension, this psychological thriller may sound about as far away from the epic 2008 monster movie as possible . . . until you get to the end.
Long story short, Michelle escapes the bunker but finds that while the air is still breatheable, their planet has been invaded by alien ships. Not quite a city-destroying kaiju, but it's just as terrifying. The question is, does this movie take place in the same universe as the first movie or even have anything to do with it? The answer is complicated.
The idea of a Cloverfield sequel has been long-rumored. Director Matt Reeves and producer J.J. Abrams left the possibility open, but never seemed to find the right idea. Enter Valencia. Previously titled The Cellar, Valencia was written by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken and was being developed under Abrams's production company, Bad Robot. Eventually, Whiplash writer Damien Chazelle was brought in to help with a final version of the script. The cast signed on in 2014, but the movie was never referred to (publicly) as 10 Cloverfield Lane until the trailer dropped earlier this year.
The fact that the film is labeled 10 Cloverfield Lane might still seem confusing, because it is confusing. It's not a proper sequel or prequel. It doesn't take place in the same universe the way Marvel movies do. "It's like Cloverfield is the amusement park, and each of these movies is a different ride in that park," Abrams explained to Vanity Fair. "It's a vaguely unusual thing, but I hope it works. This felt like an unexpected, cool and fun way to do something that major studios don't do as often as we'd all like. This gave us a way to [tell an original story] under an umbrella that hopefully would garner some attention but more importantly have a thematic and deeper connection, tell original stories with filmmakers and actors who you might not have seen before at all or certainly in a thing like this."
Does this mean we can expect more films under this "umbrella"? Abrams hasn't confirmed anything, but let's hope so. Perhaps next time you won't even know you're about to see a Cloverfield film until you sit down at the credits start rolling? Just a suggestion.
Kate Middleton's Not Too Princess-y to Play Sports
Kate Middleton has a full schedule with two children and royal duties to attend to, but she's already proven in the past that she's not afraid to work up a sweat. Kate's been active since Saint Andrew's school, where she played tennis and swam, and her sporty days haven't stopped since she became a duchess. She showed off her athletic skills in front of the cameras during her royal tour of New Zealand and Australia in 2014, and now we've rounded up all of her most active moments (remember that hilarious cricket game?).

20 Photos That Prove Andre Holland Looks Hot in Any Historical Era
My life recently changed in two very important ways: I discovered my new favorite show, The Knick, and my new celebrity crush, Andre Holland, who plays surgeon Algernon Edwards. The Cinemax series, set at a 1900 New York hospital and directed by Stephen Soderbergh, is truly outstanding. If you don't believe me, just ask President Barack Obama, who says it's one of his favorite shows. That's right: THE PRESIDENT. The Knick also happens to be an excellent source of male eye candy, and Andre Holland pretty much steals the show. As an actor, he tends toward period pieces rather than romantic comedies, so you won't find a lot of photos of him shirtless (but I did find one). Here are 20 reasons he's my new celebrity crush.

Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson Go Head to Head in a Superhot Pull-Up Contest
It's been a very eventful few weeks for fans of Zac Efron without a shirt on: the actor has been hitting the beach on the Florida set of the Baywatch movie in different costumes - none of which include a top - and last week, he linked up with costar Dwayne Johnson to film what we can only assume is some sort of action-packed, muscle-filled montage of them rapidly doing pull-ups and trying to out-ab each other in front of a group of fawning women.
Both Zac and Dwayne - along with their female costars Ilfenesh Hadera, Kelly Rohrbach, and Alexandra Daddario - kicked off filming of the '90s series adaptation last month and have been spotted looking hot while shooting their scenes. Keep reading to see their latest on-set photos!

Princess Charlotte made her grand entrance on May 2, 2015, days after her reported April due date. We got another glimpse at the little royal when her first portraits were released in June 2015 and again when she was baptized a month later. Most recently, Prince William and Kate Middleton released precious new photos from their ski vacation to the French Alps, with Prince George and Princess Charlotte looking cuter than ever in their mini snowsuits. Take a look at the princess's cutest moments so far, and then make sure to check out Prince George's best pictures!
The Cool-Girl Manicure Everyone Will Be Copying This Season
We already gave you the exclusive preview of all of Chanel's new Le Vernis Nail Lacquers, and now you can see them come to life. The classic formula has been redesigned for a longwear finish, with no need for a UV lamp or a salon service. And trust me, it works - those are my hands in the video! Chanel celebrity manicurist Ashlie Johnson worked with us to create a one-of-a-kind manicure that appealed to both the Valentine's Day crowd and those following Spring 2016 trends, and the result was a gorgeous watercolor finish, using both new and iconic shades from the brand. Johnson, fresh off working with her clients Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Brie Larson at the Golden Globes, aspired to create a look that wouldn't just turn heads - it had to be easy to paint on yourself.
Ashlie first applied a base coat and a light neutral shade before swiping fuschia, red, gray, and gold lacquer across my nails. She used a small nail brush to create tiny hearts on accent nails - which are so delicate, they almost appear hidden - and then finished the look with the Le Gel topcoat.
Take a look at a manicure fit for Cupid - or the runway - and let us know your favorite polish shade in the comments below.

These Photos of a Real-Life Baby Leprechaun Will Make Everyone Wish They Were Irish
Rockwell Lawrence, aka the cutest real-life Elf on the Shelf ever, is back at it again with a new photo series. This time, the sweet little babe is a real-life leprechaun, and he's been making appearances all over the house in the days leading up to St. Patrick's Day.
Just like in his Elf on the Shelf series, Rockwell is popping up all over the place, getting himself into mischief and posing in precarious positions. However, this go-around in front of the camera has been a little bit different, according to Rockwell's dad, Alan Lawrence: "The leprechaun project has been a little more challenging than the elf because of the beard. Rockwell loves to pull it off or pop it in his mouth right before we take the photo."
Sounds like the most adorable problem we've ever heard!

These Harvard Studies Determined the Best Diet for Weight Loss
A Mediterranean diet yields a number of health benefits and it's been recently confirmed to be the best for weight loss. Based on five Harvard Medical studies, this diet is the most effective for shedding pounds in comparison to a low-fat diet, a low-carb diet, and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) diet. Heavy in fruits, vegetables, grains, olive oil, and beans, and low on meat, dairy, and eggs, the Mediterranean diet is also benficial for your heart, eyes, and brain function.
998 overweight trial participants who lived on the Mediterranean for a year lost between nine to 22 pounds. Both the low-carb and ADA diet had similar results, while those on the low-fat diet lost about half the amount of pounds between six and 11. Although the article doesn't determine a single diet ultimate for weight-loss, it does conclude that the Mediterranean diet would be the closest option because of its hearty-healthy benefits.
Whether or not these findings convince you to change your ways, try at least incorporating this diet for days you want to eat clean.

Decorist, an online interior design service, offers virtual creative direction at a fraction of what a traditional designer typically charges, making it an appealing option for budget-conscious consumers who don't mind taking care of installation.
When we caught wind that Decorist was joining forces with ATGstores.com and Porch to pull off a virtually designed house in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood, we were anxious to see the results. Even bigger than the seemingly lofty hurdle of designing an entire home virtually, was the two-week time frame in which it was all executed. With Decorist's top Seattle-based, nationally recognized designers on the job, we jumped at the chance to ask them about their go-to tips for adding major style at minimal expense.
Why It's "Absolutely Stupid" to Waste Time Doing Things You Don't Like
If money wasn't an object, how would you really enjoy spending your life? Without thinking about all the details and the logistics, but instead thinking only of what truly makes you happy - would you be doing the same thing you're doing right now? Alan Watts, a British speaker, philosopher, and writer, captured in words what's easy to forget or ignore in practice: happiness matters. Watch this beautiful recording, where he makes these poignant points about why it's important to do what you love.
1. Stop thinking about money first.
Watts says that "if you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you will spend your life completely wasting your time. You will be doing things you don't like doing in order to go on living, that is, to go on doing things you don't like doing." Which, as he accurately points out, is stupid.
2. Quality of life is more important than anything else.
"Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing," Watts says, "than a long life spent in a miserable way."
3. If you love something, you will be good at.
Regardless of how nice it would be to do what we want all day, every day, we do have to make a living. Watts addresses this fact by saying that "if you do really like what you're doing . . . you can become a master of it." If you completely master a talent, one can theoretically benefit monetarily and/or find a way to make ends meet comfortably while finding a balance between doing what they love and what needs to be done.
4. We are creating a culture of people who aren't pursuing their passions - and we need to change it.
"It's absolutely stupid to spend time doing things you don't like," Watts says emphatically. We, in turn, teach our children the same thing, thus perpetuating a cycle with misplaced emphasis on the importance of money and work rather than what makes us happy. "We are bringing up children and educating them to live the same sort of lives we're living . . . to bring up their children to do the same thing. It's all retch and no vomit - it never gets there," he says.
5. Find what you love, and do it.
Watts thinks people should ask themselves one question: What do I desire? Once you know the answer to that question, the rest will follow.
28 Reasons Theo James Is Your Favorite Part of the Divergent Series
Our excitement for the next installment in the Divergent series, Allegiant, can be described in two words: Theo James. Sure, sure, sure, we want to see where the story goes, but let's be real: we are all about Divergent because of the very sexy Theo James. He plays love interest and all-around ass-kicker Four, the breakout role James needed to land him in our hearts (and if this was the '90s and we were in middle school, on our walls). Here are all the ways James has become our favorite part of the Divergent franchise.
10 Actors Who Have Slipped Into the Batsuit
From movie trilogies to Lego cartoons, there have been many, many portrayals of Batman on the big and small screens over the years. Whether you associate the masked vigilante with Christian Bale or Michael Keaton, one thing is certain: each generation has a different perception of who the superhero is. As you get excited for Ben Affleck in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, check out which other actors have slipped into the Batsuit, and make sure you've caught the latest Batman v Superman trailer.
Wait - Did Steven Yeun Just Confirm That Glenn Won't Die on The Walking Dead?
Anyone associated with The Walking Dead might as well be a Backstreet Boy, because they keep playing games with our (fragile, battered) hearts. In the latest round of "Is Glenn going to die a brutal, traumatic death, or what?" actor Steven Yeun, who plays Glenn, has muddied the waters even further thanks to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, in which he waxes poetic about the debut of the sixth season's big bad, Negan. "For me, his arrival is awesome," he told the magazine. "We've been waiting for this person for a long time, and in the comic books, he in a way brings a level of stakes that are kind of unmatched. And so, for me, for Negan to come into the show is, to say nothing less, f*cking awesome."
If you're a bit confused as to why Yeun seems so elated over the dude who beats the brains out of his character in the comics, resulting in one of the most tragic and iconic deaths of the series, the actor sheds some light on the situation and hints that all might not be as it seems. "I know people are going to always go, 'Negan kills Glenn in the comics,' but rest assured that we don't necessarily do what's in the comics," Yeun elaborated. "There's a clear divide in the way we tell a story on television, and the way that story is told in the comics, because it has to be. And everybody will have to see what happens, but we definitely tell our story in the way that television should be told."
The zombie drama is known for its manipulative use of red herrings (*cough* Glenn and the dumpster *cough*), so these quotes - as well as everything other cast members have said so far - aren't the be-all, end-all, for anything. The only thing we know for sure? The season finale is going to be a real doozy.

This Powerful "Body Image" Video Represents Society's Unrealistic Standards
Body Image by Jody Steel - A Timelapse DrawingMusic by Kylaido
Posted by Jody Steel on Tuesday, March 8, 2016
An incredible video by artist Jody Steel has been taking Facebook by storm for its powerful message. Titled "Body Image," the time-lapse footage shows Jody painting her stomach into a tightly coiled knot, symbolizing the drastic lengths people have gone to achieve an ideal body. Both men and women strive to fit society's unrealistic standards of perfection, but Jody's work discourages people from feeding into the pressure.
The powerful drawing has struck a chord with over 900,000 Facebook users who shared the video within just a week of being posted. It's no surprise that it's nearing 100 million views, as the video has resonated with many users who've experienced body image-issues themsleves. Jody commented in response to the overwhelming support:
There have been times I've look in a mirror and wished for a perfect figure. No matter how much I went to the gym or how little I ate carbs and sugar, I still didn't see what I imagined was perfect. Once I realized that naturally, I don't have a coke bottle figure, or long and thin legs, I began to let go of the pressures I've felt to fulfill an image that our society has deemed the pinnacle of beauty. I like to adventure and I love to try new foods-especially if they're spicy. So let go of your demons and learn to enjoy the things you love in life. You can be healthy and happy. I've had this idea for a long time and I'm glad I finally did it!

The Only Thing Cuter Than Scott Foley Is Scott Foley Gushing About His Dog
Were you one of those lucky children who got a brand-new pet on Christmas morning one year? Pets are a popular gift during the holiday season, but we recently learned from Swiffer that some people are reluctant to bring home a pet because of the potential messes they'll have to deal with. Last year, the brand launched the "Welcome Home" child's first pet campaign with Scott Foley as the ambassador, and we sat down with him to get the scoop on the campaign and to hear all about his adorable pup at home, Frankie.
If This Bill Passes, Parents Will Get Paid Time Off For School Activities
It's difficult for many working parents to take time off of work to participate in their kid's school activities. But a new bill that would offer paid time off for field trips and other school programming could solve that problem. If it passes, parents would receive three paid days off each year. However, small businesses of 25 employees or less would be exempt from this requirement.
The reason for this bill is that being more present in your child's school life proves to have long-term benefits.
"Studies show that this greatly improves your child's educational chances in life," California State Assemblyman Mike Gatto, who conceived the bill, told ABC 13. "And it's really critical that we give parents this opportunity to do it without forcing them to make the tough decision between paying the bills and being involved."
The legislation must still be approved before being introduced to the state senate. Many parents who are willing to be more involved in their kid's class activities simply can't afford to do so. But businesses that can't afford to grant employees that paid time off may be a huge reason why this bill will have difficulty passing.
It might be a while before any action takes place, but this bill is exactly what working parents need.

Scientists Have Found a Way to Make Meat Without Killing Animals
A company called Memphis Meats has found a way to manufacture meat in a lab. The team of scientists, led by CEO and cardiologist Uma Valeti, feeds animal cells "with oxygen and nutrients such as sugars and minerals" to grow meat that can be harvested within nine to 21 days, The Huffington Post reports. The result is a product whose appearance, smell, and taste are identical to real meat. "We love meat. But like most Americans, we don't love the many negative side effects of conventional meat production: environmental degradation, a slew of health risks, and food products that contain antibiotics, fecal matter, pathogens, and other contaminants," the company explains on its site. Research of this kind has been ongoing for years, and this breakthrough could lead to some major changes in the food industry and have an impact on the large-scale slaughtering of animals for human consumption.

Drop Everything and Celebrate Spring With Starbucks's New Drink
The first day of Spring is this Sunday, and what better way to commemorate the sun's return than a new Starbucks drink? For the next five days (until March 20), the beloved coffee chain is offering a Cherry Blossom Frappuccino. Try to contain your excitement. The name is slightly misleading since the beverage doesn't actually contain cherries. According to the press release, it's "a delicious blend of sweet strawberries and cream, striped with white chocolate sauce and matcha drizzle and topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of matcha," which sounds just as appetizing as Starbucks's newest permanent menu item, the Citrus Green Tea Latte. Starbucks has never served this Frappuccino before in the US (the flavor originated in Japan), and we are itching to try it. One caveat: it's only available at participating Starbucks, so if you're on a mission to try it, make sure to call ahead!
8 Things to Buy From Amazon
The free shipping on Amazon might make you a little too shop-happy and cause you to buy too many things from the online superstore. Well, it turns out, only some items are worth buying from Amazon, while others are better off bought from brick-and-mortar stores. Here are a couple of items that tend to be better deals on Amazon because of its low price or huge selection:
- Some Subscribe & Save items: If you join Amazon's Subscribe & Save program, you're signing up for a regular order of a particular item. You'll get five percent off if you subscribe to less than five items, but if you have more than five, you'll get 15 percent off the whole order. Not only are the discounts appealing, but the subscriptions are a good reminder of replacing items such as filters and toothbrush heads.
- Auto parts: Parts for vehicles are extremely easy to search for on Amazon's auto shop, which makes it a great place to shop for auto parts.
- Computer accessories: You can often get computer parts and accessories for a cheaper price than other online stores like Newegg, and with a better return policy, to boot, says Lifehacker.
- Pet-related products in bulk: You're better off buying pet products, like cat litter, pet food, and pee pads, in bulk on Amazon. Not only do they tend to be cheaper, but you'll also save yourself the hassle of lugging these heavy items around.
- Books: Amazon was originally known for selling books, but has evolved into a one-stop shop for everything else over the years. Still, the books are a great buy since they trade in high volumes of not just new books, but also heavily discounted used ones in perfect condition.
- Magazines: Magazines have massive discounts on the online superstore. You can often get a one-year subscription for $15 or under on most magazines.
- Diapers: Diapers are another type of item that seem to be cheaper on Amazon, and you can save big if you're part of the Amazon Mom program. It comes free with an Amazon Prime membership, and you'll see savings of 20 percent off diapers and more.
- Appliances: There are many appliances you can get at a much cheaper cost on Amazon if you do a little comparison shopping. The prices tend to be cheaper or competitive when you compare them to stores like Walmart and Best Buy.
Of course, there are plenty of exceptions, so be sure to do your research before buying. For example, prescription pet food tends to be cheaper at the vet's office. And remember that the price tends to fluctuate on Amazon, so you can actually wait it out and track the prices to get the best deal possible. Check out these tips to save even more on the online shop.

Approximately seven billion people from all religious, ethnic, financial backgrounds (and more!) occupy the depths of our world. But what if the human population was condensed to just 100 people? In this video published by GOOD, we're taken through the scenario of a small-scaled population divided into groups based on religion, class, education, and even access to clean water. However, while you might think that social equality would be easier to achieve in a small group, this video shows that even in a modestly sized community, people are still living massively different lives. Watch along to check it out - you won't be able to look away!
Unleash Your Creativity With These Watercolor Tattoo Ideas
It seems like the majority of popular tattoo styles these days only come in one color - black. While we appreciate the minimalist nature of these designs, we also think that you shouldn't be afraid to go for the bold when it comes to your ink. After all, you wouldn't want to be restricted to one nail polish or lipstick hue. These beautiful watercolor tattoos color outside the lines for a stunning painterly look. Even better, you can incorporate the technique into any tat you've been dying to try, whether it's flowers, stars, or another design.
This Drag Queen's '90s Makeup Looks Will Make You Seriously Nostalgic
We're still majorly addicted to television, but no shows get us quite as excited as our beloved Nickelodeon cartoons from childhood. Though they're harder to track down and watch these days, we still enjoy tuning into Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, Daria, and more.
It seems that Phi Phi O'Hara, a contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race, feels the same way we do. She is currently working on a "365 Days of Drag" makeup series on her Instagram account and has reserved a generous selection of days for nostalgic cartoon characters. While she's already re-created Eureeka from Eureeka's Castle, an entire team of My Little Ponies, and more of our favorites, she also has plans to pay homage to comic-book heros and villains, Pokémon, and others.
