Golden Milk: The Antidepressant, Debloating, Weight-Loss-Boosting Wonder Drink
Ready to simmer down and give your body a boost before bedtime? We've got the perfect, healthy nightcap for you, and you may have heard of it: golden milk.
Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, golden milk is a combination of the powerful spice turmeric, coconut milk, and sometimes coconut oil. Black pepper is often added (in small amounts) to increase the bioavailability of (i.e., your body's ability to absorb) the superspice turmeric. Creamy and spicy, soothing and warm - this delicious drink is more than just a tasty treat. Rich in electrolytes and digestive-aiding properties, your body is going to love every sip.
- Benefits of Turmeric: Turmeric's benefits are so good, one 2013 study said it's almost too good to be true. The anti-inflammatory spice has "shown therapeutic potential against a number of human diseases," including cancer and could even help with Alzheimer's. Because of the reduced inflammation, turmeric can also help with gas, bloating, and digestive discomfort, and some studies have mentioned its help with weight loss. Also, some studies and sites have shown that turmeric has antidepressant properties, leading to better moods, less stress, better sleep, and improved brain health.
- Benefits of Coconut Oil: Similarly, coconut oil can help with digestion and gut health, thanks to its antimicrobial properties (which come from good fatty acids, MCFAs). The healthy fats can also raise your good cholesterol, HDL.
- Benefits of Coconut Milk: Did you know that coconut milk can also help with digestion? It "nourishes the digestive lining" with natural electrolytes and healthy fats, which can improve gut health and help with IBS. Like turmeric, it can help reduce inflammation and even aid in weight loss. MCTs, another kind of fatty acid, are found in coconut milk and help with physical performance - allowing you to build muscle and lose fat.
Ready to mix up a batch? We like flavoring with a little honey or agave and sometimes a bit of vanilla bean or vanilla extract, cinnamon, and ginger. You'll be sweetly sipping your way to health in no time!

The sweatshirt, which will set you back $885, features the film's leads, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, as their characters, Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, as well as the "unsinkable" ship. The Collagen Trend: Why These Supplements Matter For Exercise and Health
Whether you're an athlete, trying to get better skin, or looking to improve your bone health, there's a supplement you need to know about: collagen.
At a beautiful outdoor breakfast in Nantucket, MA, I was introduced to collagen as a supplement for the first time, and it came in the form of pancakes, waters, and matcha lattes, with special (tasteless!) supplement powders from a brand called Vital Proteins. This was also the first time I had heard "collagen" referenced in the health world without any reference to needles or fillers - in fact, there were more stats thrown around about athletes and runners. Let's just say that I was more than intrigued.
Collagen is found naturally in the body, and it's essential to our tissue structure and elasticity - but its production declines with age ( . . . yayyyy). While collagen is found in animal proteins that you can eat naturally (like beef, for example), it's not typically in the cuts of meat you'd want to eat. Collagen comes from connective tissue - the stuff you're cutting off your meat, typically. Eating a boneless, skinless chicken breast? It's not exactly loaded with collagen. It's okay though, we don't really want to gnaw at bones and tendons, either.
There are also certain foods you can eat (turmeric is a good one) to increase your body's natural collagen production, but you won't get the same volume as you would with a supplement.
Supplements deliver the collagen or collagen peptides to your body in a way that can increase your levels directly. The benefits of collagen supplementation are pretty impressive and largely backed by science. Here are some reasons to consider loading up on this fundamental protein.
- For skin. Multiple studies have shown the beneficial effects of collagen supplements on the skin. One study in 2013 showed that consuming collagen supplements reduced signs of aging, and another noted a significant improvement in skin elasticity.
- For your bones and joints. A 2008 study showed "improvement of joint pain in athletes" with a dietary collagen supplement. The same study also noted that collagen supplements have been shown to be beneficial for patients with osteoarthritis. Another study observed the growing bones of rats and concluded that collagen did in fact increase bone mass - something to think about, since women struggle with bone density more than men. Thanks, genetics!
- For athletic performance. Collagen is a protein; adding collagen into your diet also means adding in protein. For example, adding two scoops of a collagen supplement like Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides adds an extra 18 grams of protein to whatever you're eating and drinking. Adding protein helps with muscle repair and building, recovery, and satiety, helping you exercise better and feel your best.
- For your gut. Naturopathic physician Dr. Josh Axe says collagen can help remedy leaky gut syndrome - a medical condition that can cause food sensitivity, digestive problems, and a slew of other physical ailments. We've seen more and more about this on health blogs like Paleoleap.com, but have yet to see scientific research. All in all, it seems like there are no harmful side effects, so it can't hurt to try - especially since collagen is even easier to digest than gelatin.

These Photos of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck Will Take You Way Back
Back in the early 2000s, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez made headlines in Hollywood with their high-profile relationship. The couple first started dating in July 2002, after meeting on the set of their movie Gigli, and later became engaged a few months later in November. Less than a year later, their wedding was postponed because of "excessive media attention," which led to their breakup in January 2004. While the two eventually moved on with other people, they haven't been shy about talking about their relationship to the press, with Jen referring to it as "a genuine love" in an interview with People. If you're feeling a little nostalgic, you'll definitely get a kick out of these incredible throwback photos of the couple.
The 3 Things You Need to Do to Reduce Belly Fat
You've been eating right and exercising for months, and although you've reached your goal weight and feel happy with your thinner frame, your belly is still a little pudgy. How can you get rid of the extra flab surrounding your abs?
Ab exercises, right? Unfortunately, all the crunches in the world won't slim down your middle. They will strengthen the muscles underneath the layer of fat, but until you eliminate that extra layer, your toned ab muscles will remain hidden. You can't spot-reduce fat from certain areas of your body; you have to reduce body fat as a whole. The best way to do that is with cardio.
If the exercise plan you're following isn't doing the trick, then it's time to kick it up a notch. Make sure to choose high-intensity cardio workouts that burn the most calories such as running, swimming, jumping rope, hiking, or high-impact cardio classes (try this 10-minute belly-busting workout). These burn mega calories and help to reduce your overall body fat. Also include speed intervals in your workouts since these are proven to target fat around the midsection.
You can also tackle a softer belly with your diet. Avoid foods containing trans fat such as certain packaged cookies, crackers, margarines, granola bars, and breads. If the list of ingredients says partially hydrogenated oil, then put it back on the shelf. Include foods that contain MUFAs (monounsaturated fat acids) instead, such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil - just make sure to keep your portions in check. Other foods that fight belly fat or bloat include blueberries, pineapple, protein such as low-fat dairy products, and high-fiber foods such as pears and leafy greens. Try this flat-belly smoothie recipe that includes belly-busting foods all in one delicious drink, and munch on this flat-belly salad.
Stress can be another reason for belly fat, since it triggers the production of cortisol, a stress hormone linked to an increased appetite and more belly fat. Taking measures to reduce the stress in your life through relaxing yoga sequences, meditation, massage, sipping tea in a bubble bath, or these other completely free stress-relievers could be the difference between a flat belly and a flabby one.
This Spill-Free Wine Glass Is Here to Solve All Your Clumsy-Girl Struggles
Saturn Wine Glasses from Christopher Yamane on Vimeo.
The only catch is that such a smart invention doesn't come at a low price. The glass is sold at one online retailer for $52, while it's listed for $46 on Super Duper Studio's site. The team behind the invention, Chris Yamane and Matt Johnson, are happy to explain the reasoning behind the price. "To prepare the material for each cup, the molten glass is shaped by hand before being blown into a mold by glass artisans. Each glass is then annealed overnight (a process which cools the glass slowly to relieve material stresses), cut, and polished by hand," the product's description reads. The most reassuring part is the glass comes with a 30-day return policy as well as a one-year warranty. Would you invest in this spill-proof wine glass? Let us know in the poll below!20 Latin Recipes You Can Fit in a Mason Jar and Enjoy Later

What to Do Tonight to Have the Best Day Ever Tomorrow
Waking up groggy and unprepared does not make for a happy morning. Incorporate these bedtime rituals into your evening routine, and you'll immediately reap the positive benefits.
- Sip different: While a glass of wine or another boozy nightcap can make for a nice night, it is not supporting your goals for the next day. Stick with these better-for-you before-bed drinks that won't mess with your energy or sleep.
- Snack right: Certain snacking can support a healthy night's sleep. Opt for something light (around 150 calories) like these calm-inducing snacks.
- Pick up, pack up: Spend 10 minutes tidying up your home and packing up your work and gym bags for the following day. This way, you wake up to a clean, Zen space, and you'll have more time to linger over your coffee and breakfast.
- Write it down: Instead of trying to run down a long mental list (and inevitably forget something), write down what you need to do the following day - especially the things you tend to forget. Since I've adopted this habit, I'm much calmer in the morning and have not left my apartment without grabbing my lunch first.
- Turn it off: Keeping your electronics on all night is affecting your sleep patterns, which can zap your energy the following morning. Say goodbye to Netflix binges in bed, and unwind with a book or magazine instead.
- Get to bed: Listen to your body when it's tired! It's imperative to make sure you're getting at least seven hours of sleep every night, so you wake up feeling fabulous and ready to take on whatever tomorrow might bring.
15 Ways William Is the Most Modern Future King
When Prince William was planning his wedding to Kate Middleton back in 2011, it became clear that this was very much a 21st century royal who wanted to leave behind some of the outdated
practices of the past and move into a more modern age. He tore up suggestions by courtiers, opted for a buffet for dignitaries at Buckingham Palace instead of a sit-down meal, and whittled down the guest list to become just friends and family by the time evening fell. Since then, he has continued to do things his way and is proving himself to be a very contemporary king-in-waiting.

We've Deemed This the Best New Bottled Starbucks Beverage on the Market
Over the last year, Starbucks cold brew has become an instant fan favorite. So much so, the company announced back in March that it would release a bottled version made with the same blend of Latin American and African coffee beans that the stores use in its cold brew. Well, the wait is over! Starbucks sent us a few bottles to try for ourselves and let's just say, our tasters went crazy for the stuff. First off, the unsweetened black coffee has a sweet scent, reminiscent of Pike's Place coffee. It tastes chocolatey, nutty, and caramel-like with a supersmooth, clean aftertaste. Since there's no bitter flavor or finish, you won't find yourself craving cream or sugar. It's good. Really good. Maybe even the best bottled Starbucks beverage yet! Although most of the reviews were positive, a few thought the dark roasted beans made the cold brew taste slightly burnt. If you're a fan of blonde roasts, you may want to skip this stuff.

The Weight-Loss Tips Missing From Your Evening Routine
While losing weight isn't something that happens overnight, doing some prep work the night before can make all the difference when you step on the scale. If slimming down and becoming healthier are two goals at the top of your priority list, here are four must dos to make part of your weeknight routine.
I Need Therapy . . . For My Vagina
I'm Kate, and I am a C-section advocate. I liked the long hospital stay, the scheduled birth date (I'm a planner), and, yes, I'll admit that after hearing horror stories from friends who endured fourth-degree tears, stitches, and more, I liked that a C-section was more likely to keep my lady parts in their prebaby state. Or so I assumed.
After my first C-section (which followed 16 hours of labor and a "failure to progress" diagnosis), in most ways, I recovered quickly. But months (OK, years) later, my husband was still telling me that something wasn't right "down there." Sex was painful, therefore, I didn't want to do it as much, but I chalked it all up to having a new baby, then a toddler, and the myriad related stresses.
Then I had my second C-section, which I told friends was a breeze. I was up showering all by myself hours after the surgery, feeling like a baby-delivering champ. But six weeks later, when my husband convinced me it was time to get back on the wagon, so to speak, I realized that the problem (sex = ouch!) that I didn't want to address in the almost three years between having my daughter and son had reached a tipping point. Sex wasn't just painful; it was impossible, tear-inducing, and traumatic for both of us.
I decided it was time to talk to my doctor. What I didn't expect was for her to immediately offer up a solution. "You have muscle spasms in your vagina," she told me. "You need to go to pelvic floor physical therapy. Usually it takes about eight sessions." "Physical therapy for my vagina?" I asked. "That's a thing?"
Apparently it is. My doctor explained that spasms are equally likely to affect women who give birth naturally or through a C-section, since they are caused by the stress the baby's weight puts on the pelvic floor, not the birthing process. I guess I was right when I claimed my body hated being pregnant. It was literally quivering in revolt.
So, a couple of weeks later, I found myself entering my local ATI Physical Therapy, where I met my therapist, a sweet woman about my age, who ushered me into a private room and then spent an hour manipulating, massaging, and stretching my vagina back into shape.
She manually worked on relaxing trigger points (it was as intimate as it sounds), then hooked me up to an electro-therapy machine that uses strategically placed electrodes to increase blood flow and help me heal. And when all of that dramatically helped but didn't completely fix the spasm problem, she sent me back to my doctor for the last-resort injection she'd warned me about. It was as bad as I'd imagined, a sort of Botox shot for the interior of my vagina. If the injection itself wasn't traumatic enough (imagine forceps and an extralong needle), I unfortunately also had a bad reaction to the muscle-relaxing medicine, and it left me feeling nauseous and ill for two days.
At that point, I had spent more than two months rehabilitating my vagina. Was it fun? Um, hell no. But I'll admit, it worked. Things are a lot less painful and a lot more fun down there on those rare days that sleep deprivation, breastfeeding, and temper tantrums don't drain all the sexy out of me. Here's to hoping that any future kinds of therapy my kids force me into are just as effective.

This Is How Italians Avoid the Afternoon Slump
After visiting Italy for a week, I have a newfound appreciation for the simplicity that Italians value when it comes to food, especially coffee. I'm the kind of person who has four cups of coffee in the morning and somehow still manages to be tired in the afternoon, so I'm particularly enamored with the seriousness with which Italy treats its caffè and the brilliant way Italians avoid the common afternoon slump.
They end each meal with a shot of espresso.
No matter if I was eating lunch or dinner at Casa Buitoni, where I stayed in Sansepolcro, or at a restaurant in Tuscany, the waiter's first question after clearing our finished plates was not, "Would you like dessert?" but instead a simple, "Coffee?" And by "coffee," Italians don't mean a pot of coffee, they mean espresso. You get un caffè, meaning a freshly brewed single shot of espresso in a tiny cup, served without milk or sugar. The espresso is milk-free for a reason: the commonly supported idea in Italy is that drinking a milk-heavy coffee after a big meal will only fill you up more and screw up your digestion. It's essentially sacrilege to order a cappuccino past 11 a.m., so be sure to avoid that unless you want to stick out like a sore thumb.
Quickly downing a hot, frothy shot of espresso is the perfect postmeal jolt of energy that brings you out of your carb-induced slump. I loved ending each meal with a caffeine boost, and it was exactly what everyone needed to push through our busy days. I think America can take a page out of Italy's book when it comes to coffee.

If You're Trying to Lose Weight, Stop Doing These 5 Things
While some have tried pretty shocking techniques to lose weight, there are also some common, long-held techniques that seem like a good idea - and may even work at first - but are absolutely going to backfire and end up causing weight gain. If you're on a quest to a slimmer you, avoid doing these five things.
Having a Cut-Off Time For Eating
If you've heard that you shouldn't eat past 6, 7, or 8 p.m. in order to lose weight, that's just not true. Food eaten at night doesn't automatically get stored as fat, as previously believed. What time you stop eating has nothing to do with how much weight you'll gain or lose - it's the total calories you consume in a day that matters. If you are a late-night snacker, opt for healthier options that are easy to digest.
Deprivation
Whether it's all carbs, all gluten, all sugar, all baked goods, or all whatever, certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition believes this is not a life your pizza-ice-cream-pasta-loving self can sustain. After a period of forced deprivation, most people will just throw in the towel and devour an enormous plate of whatever they're living without, says Langevin. Or, if they are able to go through a period of elimination, once they go back to eating these foods, the weight they lost will slowly creep back on. When it comes to maintaining weight loss, moderation is key.
Subscribing to a Low-Fat Diet
Going no fat or low fat was a huge trend back in the '90s, a fad that we are glad has mostly passed. Most low-fat foods are packed with sugar to add flavor, and as a result, they end up causing weight gain - especially belly fat. Also of importance is that we've since learned that eating healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, and nuts can actually help to increase metabolism and can burn away belly fat. Healthy fats also fill you up longer, so go ahead and add nuts to your smoothie, avocado to your soup, or roast your veggies in olive oil.
Skipping Out on Meals
In order to lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit. And while reducing the number of calories in your diet is one way to do this, skipping an entire meal is not the way to go. Starving the body can slow down its metabolism and lead to overeating later. And let's face it, if you're running on empty, you won't have the energy for a calorie-crushing workout later. Beyond adopting a healthier diet in general, the best way to reduce your calorie intake is to find ways to make healthy swaps in your favorite foods and also by choosing lower-calorie foods that are high in fiber, protein, or whole grains, which can better keep you full.
Only Exercising
Working out is definitely part of the weight-loss equation, but if you think it means you can eat whatever you want, you're not going to be happy with the results. Keep in mind that a 30-minute run at a pace of six mph (10 minutes per mile) burns about 270 calories. In order to lose a pound a week, you need to burn or cut out 500 calories a day. So that means coupled with your 30-minute workout, you still need to cut out 220 calories from your diet, which most likely does not translate to eating everything in sight. Research actually proves that "abs are made in the kitchen," which means that what you eat - focusing on eating healthy portions throughout the day - can be even more important than how much you work out.
Smoky Lilac Is the Glam-Grunge Hair Color You Should Try

Whoa! These Marvel Images Are Trippy AF
Any Marvel fan can tell you just how much they love the franchise in any form - especially when it comes to full-scale illustrations of their favorite characters. One artist turned his portraits of Marvel characters into GIFs that are so subtle, you can barely tell they're moving images.
The artist, Mike Mitchell, originally created these pieces of art for a show that ran last year at the Mondo Gallery in Texas. They are completely stunning and definitely capture his feelings for Marvel. "This has easily been the most ambitious project I've ever taken on, and it's due in part to my love for their universe; which is fictional by definition, but real in my mind and in the minds of others," he said to Mondo Tees. It definitely touches fans, considering Mitchell's artwork first made the rounds on Reddit in 2014 and was rising on Imgur a few months ago.
Look ahead and become entranced by these amazing Marvel GIFs - you won't be able to look away.
How Chickpeas Can Help You Lose Weight
While there is no magic weight loss pill, the common chickpea seems to come close - at least as a natural diet supplement.
Nutritionist Julie Upton calls these beans a multitasking food for dieters. Chickpeas help keep hunger in check because they offer a significant source of fiber, are chock full slow-to-digest protein to keep you feeling full longer, and can keep your carbohydrate cravings in check by maintaining stable blood sugar levels.
And there's science to back this up. According to a study published in the journal Appetite, regularly eating chickpeas helped keep dieters on track. Study participants, who ate a half cup of chickpeas containing 6 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein daily, consumed fewer calories from high fat, low fiber foods; but once they stopped eating the beans, the participants began to snack more on less healthy fare.
Our advice: go gonzo for garbanzo beans, especially at snack time. No matter if you're craving savory or sweet, we have a few recipes to recommend:
Savory
- Enjoy the flavors of the healthiest cuisine: Mediterranean Spiced Beans
- A little spice to boost your metabolism: Spicy Roasted Garbanzo Beans
- Add the weight-loss powers of sweet potatoes: Sweet Potato Hummus
Sweet
- Like candy but better for you: Honey Cinnamon Chickpeas
- Easy to make and no baking required: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
- Bake these for a post-workout snack: Chickpea Protein Cookies
Is Olive or Coconut Oil Better For You?
Just when you thought olive oil was the absolute healthiest oil, now you keep hearing about coconut oil. Both contain healthy fats known as monounsaturated fatty acids, or MUFAs, which can lower total cholesterol levels. This can reduce a person's risk for stroke as well as heart problems like high blood pressure. MUFAs can also improve insulin sensitivity, which is great news for those with type 2 diabetes. Incorporating these healthy fats into your diet can also help with weight loss. So is one oil better than the other?
Related: 19 Unusual Uses For Coconut Oil
Let's first compare them nutritionally. The chart below shows a similarity in calorie and total fat amount. The daily recommendation for total daily fat should be between 33 and 55 grams. For saturated fat, the daily limit shouldn't exceed 16 grams. Although coconut oil does contain more saturated fat, it's primarily lauric acid. This saturated fat is different than those found in animal products because it has an unusually high amount of medium-chain fatty acids, which are harder for our bodies to store and easier to burn. Lauric acid also increases both levels of HDL (good) and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels; while coconut oil isn't thought to negatively affect overall cholesterol levels, some experts say to use coconut oil in small amounts to be on the safe side. The chart also shows that olive oil contains significantly more monounsaturated fats - over five times as many - so in comparison, olive oil offers more health-beneficial MUFA bang for your buck.
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil | 1 tablespoon coconut oil | |
---|---|---|
Calories | 119 | 116 |
Total fat (g) | 14 | 14 |
Saturated fat (g) | 1 | 12 |
Monounsaturated fat (g) | 9.8 | 0.8 |
Polyunsaturated fat (g) | 1.4 | 0.2 |
Cholesterol (mg) | 0 | 0 |
As far as weight loss is concerned, including healthy fats in your diet can make you feel fuller, which can translate to fewer daily calories consumed. A diet rich in MUFAS has also been shown to reduce belly fat, and a few small weight-loss studies have shown that coconut oil can reduce waist size. Coconut oil is also slightly lower in calories, so over time, that little difference could add up.
Both oils are great for salad dressings and sauces, but for recipes that require higher heat such as roasting or stir-frying, choose olive oil. Coconut oil is great for light sautéing and also for baking - if you're vegan, coconut oil makes a great substitute for butter since it gives baked goods that same flaky, rich consistency and taste.
Neither olive nor coconut oil are magic elixirs for weight loss, though. It's not like just because you deep-fry french fries in coconut oil, you'll lose 10 pounds. Since both are calorie-dense, they should be used in moderation. And be sure to choose unrefined virgin coconut oil to reap the health benefits.

5 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before I Started Running
When I first got into running, I experienced everything from painful blisters to chafing to unsupported bosoms - no wonder I hated it. I wish someone had sat me down and told me these basic tips and tricks to help smooth my transition from nonrunner to runner. If you're just starting out on your own journey pounding the pavement or treadmill belt, here are things you should know about running.
It Gets Easier
As with most things, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. To strengthen your muscles, acclimate your heart and lungs, and increase your endurance, run at least three times a week. Start off with a doable distance such as two miles. Once that distance feels good, gradually increase your mileage. The key is to move at a comfortable pace for a reasonable amount of time. If you do too much too soon, you could end up with an injury or a deep hatred for the sport.
You Don't Have to Wear Two Sports Bras
If you're well-endowed, running can be painful. I wore two sports bras for the longest time because I couldn't find one that prevented the uncomfortable bounce. A cheap cotton sports bra from Target just won't do. You might have to spend $50 or more, but it's worth it when you only have to wear one bra you trust.
Don't Skimp on Gear
For my first run, I picked up a $25 pair of sneaks and a pack of cheap cotton socks and wondered why I had screaming blisters. You don't need a ton of gear, but what you do need, you shouldn't skimp on. Spring for a trusty pair of well-fitting sneaks ($60-$120), a good pair of wicking socks ($10-$15), a super supportive sports bra ($30-$70), a seamless tank to prevent chafing ($20-$40), and a lightweight pair of running shorts to avoid wedgies ($20-$40). Technical gear specifically designed for running makes a huge difference and could make or break your new running career.
There Are Apps to Chart Your Run
I often drove running routes in my car to figure out mileage until my hubby introduced me to the wonderful world of iPhone running apps. The GPS not only keeps track of your distance, but it'll also chart your workout time, pace, calories burned, and elevation and give you a map of your run. Being able to track your workout might motivate you to keep going so you can beat your personal records.
Running Outside Is Harder Than the Treadmill
My power was out one morning - meaning no treadmill time for me - so I decided to run outside instead. It was so much harder! The real hills, the uneven terrain, the wind, the sun, the heat - it all makes running tougher than it already is. But I'll tell you, once I started running outside, I saw a huge improvement in my strength and endurance. I even lost the five extra pounds I could never quite shake, and my muscle definition was noticeable to others ("Damn, look at your calves!"). I know people are in love with their treadmills, but I wish someone suggested I run outside because the difficulty made me a better runner.
