If You Want to Run Longer, This Is a Must
Ever wonder why some days you feel like you can keep running and running while on others you have zero stamina? Certainly the amount of sleep you got the night before, stress levels, and diet play a role in how you perform during your runs, but how you regulate your breath during your jogging session also affects your energy levels. Here's how to power your muscles with fresh oxygen on each stride.
Learn to breathe deeply: Your lungs are just a bit smaller than your rib cage, but most people tend to use just the top third of this powerful organ. When you take a deep breath, you are expanding the lungs, pressing down the diaphragm, and causing your abdomen to expand as your lungs fill with air. Learning to breathe this way while running helps you take in a lot of oxygen, preventing dizziness and nausea. With a little training and some stretching, you can breathe to your full potential and increase your endurance. Cross-training with yoga and Pilates can also help you learn to breathe from your diaphragm. Here are some tips for how to conquer diaphragmatic breathing.
Match your breathing to your steps: For an easy-paced run, inhale for three or four steps, then exhale for the same amount. Count the steps in your head while you adjust to breathing on tempo. If you are running more intensely, your breathing tempo will increase to support your increased energy output and become faster - a breath in for one to two steps and out for one to two steps. If you can't match your steps to your breathing tempo, then you are trying to run too fast; slow down, and get back into your rhythm.
Breathe differently in cooler temps: It's important to breathe through your nose while running in chillier weather, because cold air is dry and breathing through your mouth increases the dryness while decreasing the temperature of the air. Since your lungs do not like dry air, you can experience asthma-like symptoms, like wheezing and coughing, when breathing cold air in through your mouth. Breathing through your nose not only filters out air impurities but also warms cool air to body temperature, creating less shock for the lungs to decrease those asthma-like symptoms.
Learn to breathe through your nose: If nose breathing is difficult for you, start experimenting with the technique now before the temperature drops drastically. Breathing through the nose helps you breathe more deeply and efficiently, which will ultimately help your running no matter what the temperature is. If you plan to run in cold temps and have yet to master nose breathing, you can try wearing a bandana (or a shirt that can be pulled up far) over your nose and mouth to help trap the moisture of your breath and humidity in the air before it reaches your lungs.

If You Have Trouble Sleeping at Night, Try This Yoga Pose
Every single person deals with stress in some form - and we're always trying to learn the best ways to deal with stress so it doesn't take over our lives and we can be happier, healthier people. One of our favorite ways to mitigate stress is to do yoga, but which poses are the best for relieving emotional and physical tension? When we got the chance to talk with expert yogi and Under Armour ambassador Kathryn Budig, we jumped at the chance to ask what her favorite calming, centering poses were to relieve stress or unwind after a hard day at work.
15 Simple To-Dos For a Happy and Energized Weekend
"One of my favorite go-to poses if I need to unwind at the end of the day is legs up the wall [Viparita Karani Mudra]," said Kathryn. "It's the simplicity of just scooting up against the wall, so you're laying flat on your back with your bottom and your legs flush against the wall straight up." She recommended using a strap if you need it for added stability, too!
So what makes it so great? "It's really great to combat difficulty sleeping; it's also a great way to drain legs out at the end of the day if you've been standing for too long, or if you had a really big workout, it's great to relieve fatigue."
If you need a few more calming poses, Kathryn says, "Hip openers and gentle supine twists are also fantastic."
If You're Trying to Lose Weight, Here's a Look at the Best and Worst Cocktails For Your Waistline
Headed to a tropical escape or perhaps just your local watering hole? Those festive warm-weather libations are a staple of Summer vacations, and while they're truly delicious (I personally could never turn down a fresh piña colada, especially on a beach), the calories can add up quickly, essentially undoing any hard work you put into vacation prep. After a few nights of knocking back some frosty cocktails, you might find yourself wondering, "OK, how much do I need to work out to make my body forget this vacation even happened?" We feel you.
Here's a breakdown of cocktails and their calories and how much you'd have to run (at a 10-minute-per-mile pace) to burn them off. To keep things even, we used the same source for nearly all the cocktails, which averaged results from all brands. Then we adjusted the serving size of each of these drinks to six ounces so you can compare the breakdown of calories ounce for ounce. That said, some of these drinks come in much smaller (and in some cases, larger) serving sizes, so use this as a benchmark, not a hard-and-fast guide.
All calculations are based on a 130-pound woman running at six miles per hour (10-minute-mile pace).

The Top 4 Workouts to Avoid If You're Trying to Lose Weight
We encourage all types of fitness, for more reasons than just weight loss. While weight loss is an awesome side effect of working out and living a healthier lifestyle, exercise can benefit your brain, your mood, your sleep, and your overall health, too!
However, if you're focusing on dropping pounds, are there types of exercises you should flat-out avoid? We asked certified personal trainer John Rowley - International Sports Science Association (ISSA) director of wellness and founder of UX3 Nutrition - for his opinion on the matter. While we still encourage anyone to give these workouts a shot (in fact, we love all of them!), these four may not give you the results you're looking for if weight loss is your top priority.
- CrossFit: "CrossFit is number one on the hit list," Rowley said in an email. "The risk-to-results ratio just isn't there." If you're just beginning your weight-loss journey, you likely won't have the strength to get an effective workout without injuring yourself. "It's very popular, and I can see how fun and challenging it is," he noted. "But the way the exercises are done is very dangerous, especially for someone not in tiptop shape."
- Yoga: Rowley explained that yoga "has a lot of benefits, but losing weight is not one of them." Although you'll gain strength and tone up, if you're aiming to shed pounds, "you want to work as much of your body as possible to lose weight and to stimulate your metabolism," and Rowley said yoga is not the most effective way to do so.
- Indoor Cycling: While indoor cycling classes are great for exercise veterans, Rowley said, "they can get out of control as well," and the format of the classes can put you at risk for injury. "The rooms can get too hot, the movements can be too aggressive for some, and any vigorous exercise will make you hungry." More on that hunger in the next point . . .
- Cardio-Only Routines: Rowley said these should be avoided if your only goal is weight loss. Why? The munchies. "Cardio will help burn calories but can often make you hungry, leading to excessive calorie-consuming after workouts," putting you at a higher risk for undoing your progress. Additionally, if you're only doing cardio and not balancing with strength training, it can lead to muscle loss. "The loss of muscle destroys your metabolism; if you are going to do cardio, do it in conjunction with a well thought-out weight training workout."
Again, we love (and do) each of these workouts - and you absolutely can lose weight doing any of them. But if your number one goal is weight loss, Rowley warned, you might want to reprioritize your workout schedule.
So what should you do? "The only way for lasting, healthy weight loss that will change your body composition is through resistance training," Rowley said. "Lifting weights stimulates your muscles; your muscles burn calories even when you are eating and resting." We encourage you to be open to all types of workouts - get comfortable with movement of all types! But start with a good, healthy balance of strength training (as recommended by this trainer) and a bit of cardio to help build up your endurance so you can keep shedding pounds and crush your goals.

10 Things That All Moms of Strong-Willed Kids Know
If you're the proud parent of a strong-willed child you are most likely both incredibly proud and also at times, extremely frustrated. When you come head to head with a strong little being, it can be a challenge to deal with, especially if you happen to also be a strong-willed mom! Of course, there are so many joys in having a strong-willed child, it's just that many of these joys may come to a parent later on in life.
1. Cut Nose to Spite Face
If you have a strong-willed child, he or she will cut off his or her own nose to spite his or her face! For example, telling a strong-willed child that Santa won't come if he makes bad choices means your strong-willed child will simply say, "Fine. I don't care anyway."
The strong-willed child has to hang onto her convictions as it means so much to her to be right and see her actions come to light.
2. It's Their Way
Most of the times, the parent of a strong-willed child simply needs to trick a kiddo into thinking it was his or her idea in the first place. This takes great wit and skill but after some time, we moms can master it!
3. Bullies? Please
Yes, a strong-willed child can be bullied and can be hurt by unkind actions and words, however for the most part, parents of strong-willed kids know that their kid will lock horns with that bully. This means that while our feisty kiddos may get bullied, they most likely won't cower.
4. Not Followers
In a similar vein, the strong-willed child is not a follower, but a leader. Sometimes, the kiddo needs to learn to let someone else head the way, but as parents we know our strong children will not blindly follow the blind. For the most part.
5. Picking Battles Can be Tiring
The parent of a sassy kid knows that picking battles is not only necessary, but also exhausting. It can be tiring to sit there and mentally decide what is worth locking horns over . . . and what is not!
6. Their Ideas Can be Genius
Listening or watching a strong-willed little one speak or carry out an idea he or she has decided is a sharp idea, is amazing. A strong-willed child has so much energy, verve, direction and focus to carry out even the tiniest of initiatives. While these "initiatives" can be tiring to counteract as a parent if you don't approve of them, watching these ideas come to life is pretty awesome.
7. They Will Ask Fifty Times Again
Even when I told my kiddo, "Asked and answered," it didn't give up her multiple attempts to ask again. Eventually, as long as I repeated the same phrase, she stopped asking but not without a good battle.
The strong-willed child simply believes that she's right and has to carry out whatever it is she's fighting for.
8. They're Not Being Fresh
There's fresh and rude, and then there is strong-willed and convinced.
When a feisty kid persists with something, he's not trying to misbehave - he's trying to do what he thinks is right. It can seem defiant - and sure, a strong-willed child and ANY kid can be defiant - but it's not defiance - it's commitment.
9. Knowing They Will Rock as an Adult
Watching your strong-willed child, you know that down the line, this kid is going to be a confident, strong and ambitious adult.
10. Success is Their Middle Name
Strong-willed children may give you gray hair, but they will also be incredibly successful. All they need is a platform in which to fuel their energy, drive and vision, and BAM! The world is their oyster.
How to Keep Your Child Safe From Summertime Ticks
Nothing takes a Summer from terrific to terrible like a tick bite. Found in backyards, woods, and campgrounds across the country, these tiny critters carry a number of diseases, the most common being Lyme disease. The disease can lie dormant for months, even years, and if left untreated can cause damage to the joints, heart, and nervous system. To keep your child safe from this potentially deadly disease, it is important to take some precautions before they head outside. Here are several tips to stop ticks in their path and what to do if one latches on to your little one.

How This Mom Is Bringing Kids' Imaginary Friends to Life
When Anna Angenend's daughter Mia first told her about her imaginary friend, the photographer knew just what to do. Having had her own imaginary friend as a child, she set to work bringing Zasby - a "monster" who wouldn't brush his teeth because he loved cavities - to life. With the help of artist and illustrator Amy Snyder, they created a priceless image of two friends.
Anna and Amy, who also came of age alongside an imaginary friend, decided to create a series of portraits of kids and their pretend pals, titled My Monster & Me. We spoke with Anna about their unique project and why it's so important for these secret friendships to be seen by all.
POPSUGAR: How do you get children to open up about their imaginary friends?
Anna Angenend: The younger ones usually leak information during their playtime with us. For the older kids, 5 years old and up, I ask them what their favorite superpowers are, what they want to be when they grow up . . . what they like to do with their imaginary friend. They love to talk all about them!
PS: From the looks of your images, they're all so different. Any commonalities among all these "monsters"?
AA: It's not always one consistent imaginary friend. My daughter always says a dragon is chasing us, and we have to hide. Yesterday, she was walking around with a stick she found in the yard, and "casting spells" on trees. And "Melvin" was inspired when she asked me if we could invite the moon to a party.
PS: How were you able to portray their friends accurately?
AA: I ask them to draw what their monster looks like, then we talk about what their skin or fur feels like, what color it is . . . do they have eyes? Spikes? Scales? Some kids are very specific, and others have lots of pretend sidekicks or monsters that change every day. In that case, we would primarily focus on what the child likes to do and find a setting and concept that fits them well. The parents are really helpful with this!
PS: Who was your imaginary friend?
AA: Mine was an adult named Jessica. She was a school teacher. Together, we would line up all of my Beanie Babies in front of the fridge, and we would conduct choir practice together. I'd also vent to Jessica about why I couldn't fly in real life like I did in my dreams, and other important stuff like that!
PS: What's your message to kids with imaginary friends . . . and to parents of such kids?
AA: We want to capture the magic of their uninhibited imaginations. I think it is great to let that run wild, and for them to have a friend of sorts that will stick with them no matter what. Most kids know that their friends are pretend, yet it is very real to them in some ways.
As parents, we strive to hold on to memories of all of their first milestones and what they were like when they were little. Their imaginations are one of the biggest parts of childhood, and we want to turn it into a memorable experience for the kids, and a keepsake for them and their parents.
What You Need to Know About Babies and Benadryl in the Wake of an Infant's Death
A 4-month-old baby boy was found dead at an unlicensed day-care center in Connecticut this past March, and the police have now ruled it a homicide after finding high levels of Benadryl in the infant's system. The autopsy concluded that the cause of Adam Gregory Vasaturo Seagull's death was acute diphenhydramine intoxication, a result of antihistamines in the blood, which have a sedating effect.
According to the dosages on Children's Benadryl Liquid, children under 2 should not be given the medication, children aged 2 to 5 should only take if directed by a doctor, and children 6 to 11 years old should follow the dosages on the back on the box.
If you're considering giving your child an antihistamine that is similar to Benadryl to help ease allergies, be sure to follow the instructions on the product's packaging, or consult your child's physician for more information.

Mila Kunis Stands Up For Nursing Mothers After Being Shaming For Breastfeeding in Public
As a celebrity, Mila Kunis can count on receiving some attention and double takes from strangers during her daily life. But when these people stare not out of recognition but out of disgust because she's nursing her child, this soon-to-be mother of two draws the line.
While Mila urges people to accept every woman's choice of when, where, and how they feed their child, she shared with Vanity Fair that she opted to breastfeed everywhere. "There were many times where I didn't bring a cover with me, and so I just did it in a restaurant, in the subway, in the park, at airports, and in planes," the Bad Moms actress described. "Why did I do it in public? Because I had to feed my child. She's hungry. I need to feed her whether it's out of a bottle or out of my boob no matter where I was."
While Mila received support from her husband, Ashton Kutcher, while breastfeeding her daughter, Wyatt, they were both surprised and uncomfortable by other people's reactions to the natural act. "It always made my husband and I feel a little weird," she added. "It took us a little back because people actually looked at us in a shameful [way], and we were like, 'Oh my God,' because it's so not a sexual act."
While Mila is the first to open up about not being a perfect parent, she's proud of this decision to breastfeed her daughter - even in a public setting. Despite the onslaught of stares whenever she would nurse Wyatt without covering up, Mila isn't going to let judgment from others impact how she parents. "That's what I chose to do, but I think it's unfortunate that people are so hard on women who choose to do it and do it in public," she explained. "In the States and in our culture, we sexualize the breast so much that there's an aspect of it that people just don't know how to wrap their head around the idea of showing your breast in public. But I respect the opinions on both sides. If it's not for you, don't look."
This Woman's Post About Making Sacrifices as a Parent Will Speak Volumes to All Moms
Most parents can think of a time when they were a little fed up with all of the responsibilities of everyday life - heck, your time may be right now. Between making dinners, reading stories, and giving baths, life with littles can be exhausting. Katie Spence Pugh was starting to feel this exhaustion, so she reached out to her husband, a farmer who works long hours, to tell him she was tired and feeling a bit resentful.
"I wanted him to know that I was feeling fed up with how much he works and with all that I have to do everyday by myself. . . . Rather than complain, he said he was sorry I was tired and felt that way," she wrote in a post on Instagram accompanying a photo of her husband eating dinner while their daughter sat on the table.
". . . And it hit me. Do I wish that we saw him more than an hour or so a day? Yes. But, the love he has for his craft is something to envy. This is a man who is working to uphold four generations of blood, sweat, and tears and [is] showing his children the value of hard work and discipline." Pugh continues her post with a grand realization that she isn't the only one making sacrifices for her family.
"So while I felt frustrated, I really should have felt thankful. I got to sit down to dinner and hear all the stories from the day with the kids. I got to give them a bath and hear their squeals and giggles. I got to snuggle and love on them for three hours more than he did. He is the one sacrificing, not me."

The Magic Protein Formula For Weight Loss
We all know adequate protein (especially after a workout) is key to building and repairing muscles, but a high-protein diet may also be the secret to consistent weight loss. In fact, research has shown that doubling your protein intake can help you drop pounds without losing muscle mass. In one study, published in The FASEB Journal, researchers put 39 patients on a weight-loss regimen over 31 days; at first, all participants were on the same diet to maintain their current weight. After 10 days, they were split into three groups following calorie-restricted diets: those who ate the US-recommended daily allowance (RDA) of protein, those who ate twice the RDA of protein, and those who ate three times the RDA of protein. The participants exercised accordingly in order to lose an average of two pounds a week. The researchers found that those who ate double the protein were able to lose fat without losing muscle mass while exercising on the diet. The participants who ate triple the amount of protein didn't experience any more weight loss than the double group.
If you're trying to lose weight, losing muscle mass is exactly what you shouldn't be doing, since muscle burns more calories. While the group was small, this well-controlled study shows that if you're healthy and active, upping your protein intake while restricting overall calories may be the way to go for short-term weight loss, the researchers say, even though they note you should still follow a balanced diet in the long run.
The RDA of protein varies depending on how much you weigh and how active you are, but as an example, the RDA for a 130-pound active woman is 77 grams, meaning according to this study, you should aim for 144 grams of protein each day if you are trying to lose weight. Check out this table of the US RDA of protein for women to help you figure out how much you should eat - double the number and see if it helps your weight-loss goals.
Why You Should Love Your Natural Hair
For Megan "Megz" Lytle, getting off relaxers has been a "hair journey." The spunky beauty vlogger has been relaxing her natural texture for years but recently decided she wanted to embrace the hair she was born with. "I've been relaxing it ever since I was 15," says Megan. "I was like, 'Wait, I want to wear my hair straight all the time! I don't want to flat-iron it!'"
Megan explained who influenced her to get her hair relaxed, saying, "My family, they're from the South. They're the older generation. They're used to pressing out. So they kind of looked at it as if your hair isn't curled or straightened, your hair isn't 'done.'" This started her relationship with relaxers, a treatment she said she thought was "taking care of her hair."
Now, Megan has decided to go relaxer-free in an effort to embrace her natural hair texture. "I haven't had a relaxer since January 2016! I have a mini 'fro right now under my protective style. It's a wig. When you're transitioning, you can't manipulate your hair because you have two different textures. So I have curly girl hair . . . and then straight hair. I can't manipulate too much into it because it will break off," says Megan.

'90s Girls Will Obsess Over These Colorful Lisa Frank Tattoos
Like many young girls of the '80s and '90s, I looked forward to back-to-school shopping for one reason: Lisa Frank. Nothing made me happier than prancing down the aisles at the drugstore to pick out my very own brightly colored folder adorned with unicorns, rainbow leopards, and dolphins, which (of course) matched my new neon pencils.
Though I've grown up a lot since then, that doesn't mean that the brand's vibrant, magical illustrations stopped being appealing to me. I was quite excited when I learned I'd be able to buy Lisa Frank clothing! If you, too, never stopped loving the iconic company, why not pay tribute to it via technicolor body art? Here are some amazing tattoos to inspire your very own Lisa Frank ink.
10 Makeup Mistakes You Need to Stop Making at the Office
At the workplace, beauty gals face a tough challenge: expressing their individuality (and love of makeup!) while looking professional and sophisticated. Just like the outfit you wear to the office, the choices you make with your beauty routine can dramatically affect your colleagues' perspective of you.
In fact, it's the sad truth that your appearance could make you appear less competent. It was recently confirmed in a study that women who don't wear makeup make less money than those who do, and we predict that shoddy cosmetic application can also result in the same wage gap. So rather than let a fun hobby affect our salary, we consulted a pro for advice. Jerry Johnson, global makeup artist for Laura Mercier, schooled us on the biggest office beauty mistakes to ensure our makeup always looks polished and professional in the workplace.
- Not seeking out the best lighting in the office. If you put makeup on at work, this tip is essential. There's a good chance that you have fluorescent lightbulbs throughout your office. If that's the case, you already know that they're not particularly flattering and can make you look sickly.
"Fluorescent lighting can be terrible for makeup application," confirmed Johnson, who advised you head to the ladies' room for touch-ups instead of sticking at your desk. "Many office bathrooms have windows with natural light, or even just better lighting than the office." This will prevent you from overapplying foundation, blush, or bronzer to counteract the washed-out effects of the fluorescent bulbs.
If your bathroom's lighting is just as bleak, seek out a window elsewhere. Sun on a cloudy day is still an improvement over crummy indoor lighting!
- Using too much metallic formulas in your routine. "Just say no to shimmer!" Johnson declared. "When you wear shimmer and sparkle makeup, it reads like you're going out for the evening." If you opt to add a bit of luminosity to your appearance, focus on a bit of glimmer in your blush or strobing with a very light hand to give your complexion a healthy glow. Double-check your face in the office lighting to make sure you don't look too Vegas-ready overt - above all, you want to look like a professional at work, not a party girl.
- Not rocking a power lip for presentations. Even if a bold pout isn't usually in your beauty wheelhouse, consider it if you'll have a starring role at your next meeting. "When speaking in front of a crowd, you want people to pay attention to you and what you're saying," Johnson pointed out. "A bright shade draws attention and your colleagues will be more apt to listen to you." Try a confident, tomato-red shade like Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour in Foreplay ($28).
- Wearing too much foundation. "Stick to a natural, reasonable amount of coverage," Johnson suggested. Excess cream foundation and setting powder can look especially heavy and chalky under fluorescent lights. Instead, try just covering dark circles, blemishes, and other imperfections with concealer, then evening out your skin tone with a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer.
- Checking yourself out too frequently. Unless you're a fellow beauty editor, your boss probably won't appreciate if you test out your most recent lipstick purchases or dust on bronzer on company time - especially at your desk. Restrict your touch-ups to the ladies' room and save them for moments that matter, like before a meeting or happy hour.
- Forgetting to fill in your brows. By simply defining your arches, you'll look more groomed, polished, and professional. "I've seen many women put on an entire face of makeup and then forget about the eyebrows!" Johnson lamented. "Your eyebrows shape your face."
The finished result of a filled brow is also supersubtle, so those who don't want to wear a full face of makeup or work in environments that frown on cosmetics should definitely try it out. Lightly sketch in the sparse parts of your brows and improve their shape using a pencil like Laura Mercier Eyebrow Pencil ($24). Be wary of making them look too heavy; you don't want your new office nickname to be "Groucho Marx." Learn how to pick the right shade for your arches here, then master how to fill them in.
- Slicking on lip gloss. "Leave the shiny glosses for a night on the town," Johnson advised. Lacquered lips can look overly youthful or too casual, so opt for matte-, cream-, or balm-textured formulas instead. Consider stashing one of these innovative pout formulas in your bag.
- Aggressively contouring. "We all know that contouring is super popular, but be sure to do a soft contour," Johnson warned. He recommended sculpting with a product that is only one or two shades darker than your natural skin tone. "It doesn't matter if you use a cream or powder," he said, "just as long as it's not harsh looking!" Learn how to properly contour here (and save the aggressive cheekbone-carving for the 'gram).
- Skipping blush. "Many women think that if they contour, they won't need blush," Johnson shared. "This is such a huge mistake! Blush brings color into your face." And a little rouge can quickly counteract a sallow-looking complexion under fluorescent lights. Not sure which shade is best for your skin tone? Once you figure out your undertone (warm, cool, or neutral), you'll be better prepared to shop!
- Going through your entire beauty routine at your desk. Let us be clear: intermittent lipstick applications and dabs of powder are fine, but doing your whole 20-step regimen at your computer is not. "There's no need to overdo it! Just bring the necessities - lipstick, pressed powder, and mascara," Johnson pleaded. If you'd rather wear more makeup to work, apply it before you get to the office. You may have to set an earlier alarm (and forgo hitting snooze), but losing that extra 15 minutes is worth gaining a boost in professionalism.
This Luxurious Serum Makes Your Skin So Perfect, You'll Proudly Skip Foundation
I'm usually first in line to try a trend. I am addicted to at-home peels, have made contouring a permanent step in my makeup routine, and even own more than one blue lipstick. But despite all the praise heaped on them, I couldn't get behind beauty oils.
Coconut oil made my fine hair too greasy, and I splurged on luxurious treatments only to break out the next day. So when I came upon Vintner's Daughter Active Botanical Serum ($185), I was more than hesitant - I was flat-out skeptical. So I reached out to the product's creator, April Gargiulo, to find out what makes it special.
"I don't have a beauty background," Gargiulo admitted to me immediately. "I'm a winemaker." She had not only struggled to treat her fine lines, breakouts, and inflammation but also couldn't find a formula that she believed was safe enough to put on her skin. Because of this void in the market, Gargiulo decided to create her own product.
"I applied the same philosophy - no shortcuts! - to skin care that I would to fine winemaking," she explained. She spent two years developing her treatment with scientists, and the result was a golden serum absolutely packed with nutrients.
A brief look at the ingredient list surprised me. All 22 items are extremely recognizable: they're plants! Each one is naturally loaded with vitamins. For example, alfalfa leaves contain vitamin D, and carrot seed oil features vitamin A, the original source of retinol. "It's everything your body needs to thrive . . . and the same ingredients are intensely skin beautifying," Gargiulo told me.
Hearing Gargiulo's passion for her serum made me eager to try it, despite my initial reservations. She advised me to cleanse, tone, and then use the Active Botanical Serum.
In the carton for the formula, there's a small insert counseling users on the "push/press" technique, which was developed just for this product. I followed along closely: after dispensing a few drops, I rubbed my palms together, which is supposed to activate the botanical ingredients. (It also allows the lovely rose aroma of the serum to permeate the room!) Then, I carefully pressed my serum-coated palms onto my face, neck, and décolleté for 30 seconds.
I immediately observed a dewy radiance, but it was later that week that I fell in love with the formula. I'd been using it nightly and noticed that my typically sallow complexion looked bright and healthy each morning. In fact, one day, I went through my entire makeup routine but skipped my foundation, because I thought I had already put it on. Daily application of the Vintner's Daughter Active Botanical Serum had made my skin tone that even.
I had never been disappointed by my skin before using Gargiulo's product, but now I was proud of it. I finally understand what Beyoncé is saying in "***Flawless" when she declares that she "woke up like this."

Enrique Iglesias's superhot song, "Duele El Corazón," originally featuring reggaeton star Wisin, just took a Spanglish turn - and it's so good, especially considering Calvin Harris's rumored new girlfriend, Tinashe, sings (read: slays) in both languages on the bilingual track.

Gordon Ramsay's Transformative Way to Scramble Eggs
Yes, there are a million different scrambled eggs techniques out there, but Gordon Ramsay's will be your full-stop method. While at a press event to promote his new game with Glu Mobile, I asked chef Ramsay to go through the proper way to scramble eggs. His unique method has a heartwarming tale:
"After training in London, I wanted to become French, so I went to the birthplace of all cuisine. I remember seeing this amazing dish with scrambled eggs and sea urchin. I tasted the sea urchin through the scrambled eggs . . . and they topped it with caviar. I thought it was wild. I had never put sea urchin in scrambled eggs. The texture was just incredible. It made it so much creamier. What was more accessible to the average person at home making scrambled eggs - I knew that was crème fraiche. I perfected that craft in France making scrambled eggs to order, standing in Guy Savoy's restaurant behind the line as a 22-year-old."
But crème fraiche isn't the only thing that makes these scrambled eggs different from the rest. It's cooked in a pot! The eggs aren't seasoned from the start! Most of the cooking is done off the flame! Are you baffled yet? Me too, which is why I had to try the method out for myself. So where to begin? Start by watching Gordon's YouTube video. He shared a hilarious story about it:
I think there's about 15 million people online who have [watched] that scrambled eggs video. And it transforms the way you eat eggs. Incredible. It's a kind of rich, sumptuous way to eat scrambled eggs even for dinner, even with all the steps. It's just delicious on sourdough bread. My video, with 15 million downloads on YouTube, I burn the f*cking toast. I'm not so far down my backside. I make mistakes. I just start again. It's funny. I'm so into my scrambled eggs, focusing away. Fire alarm is going off and I burn my toast."
Like Gordon, my first attempt didn't go off hitch-free. I'm unfortunately going to need a few more practices to end up with perfectly custardy, voluminous eggs like Gordon, but what I did make was truly exceptional and unlike any scrambled eggs I've ever had before. I can't wait to keep on practicing, and neither will you once you've memorized the steps.

Here's Why Crying Helps With Stress and Weight Loss
When was the last time you had a good cry? If you've been stressed, try to just let it all out - it's actually good for you!
We asked Dr. Pete Sulack, the "stress expert," if it was better to cry out our stress or take some deep breaths to avoid tears. He told us that "in addition to being a good emotional and psychological release and a way to deal with intense emotion, crying is also good for reducing stress levels in the body."
And it's backed by science - a study at the St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Centre in Minnesota found that tears actually contain stress hormones. Dr. Pete said they're "protein-based hormones prolactin, adrenocorticotropic hormone, and leucine enkephalin (a natural painkiller), all of which are produced by the human body when it is under a lot of stress."
He also noted that "getting rid of that adrenocorticotropic hormone actually reduces the body's cortisol levels." A quick refresher on cortisol - it's the stress hormone that can make you feel anxious and panicked and also cause your body to cling to belly fat. Reduced cortisol means happier feelings and easier weight loss. Yet another reason to just get those feelings out!
Sneaky Tips For Toning Your Abs During Any Workout
Our friends at Shape Magazine give us some easy ways to make any workout a core-toning one.
Women who did 55 minutes of yoga three times a week for eight weeks significantly improved their ab strength compared with women who did 55 minutes of other exercises, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse found. At the end of the study, the yogis were able to do 14 more ab curl-ups than the other participants. Holding poses requires major core engagement, the study authors say.
To maximize ab sculpting, try doing uddiyana bandha, which involves gently pulling your belly toward your spine at the end of each exhale. "This activates and strengthens the transverse abdominis [your deepest ab muscle]," says Loren Bassett, a yoga instructor for Equinox in Dallas. "Hold poses for five or 10 ujjayi breaths, where each inhale and exhale lasts five counts," Bassett says. "You'll build strength isometrically because your abs have to work to keep you in proper position." (Next up, The Best Yoga Poses for Flat Abs)
If you're doing a faster-paced class, focus on your form. "When you're flowing through poses quickly, the common tendency is to arch your back," says Heidi Kristoffer, the creator of CrossFlowX, a yoga class in New York City. "Focus on keeping your spine straight-think about lengthening your tailbone and pulling in your front ribs-to keep your abs engaged."
Also, emphasize planks. They target the rectus (the wash-board muscles) and transverse abdominis, as well as the erector spinae, the set of back muscles that are part of your core, Bassett says. Side planks might be even better, because they hit all those muscles plus the obliques. "When you're in any plank, you have to engage your abs to prevent your back from arching or dipping," Bassett says. A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that plank variations (where feet are wide and one arm reaches forward) engaged the rectus abdominis and obliques by 27 percent more than flexion exercises (such as sit-ups) or extension ab exercises (such as single-leg extensions). (Add these yoga poses to your flow for extra ab-burning benefits.)
Here are some other ways to activate your core during every workout:
While you lift
Do a biceps curl with three-pound weights. Feel anything in your core? Didn't think so. Curl something heavier, like 10-pounders, and your abs will contract to steady your body as you rep. The lesson: Heavier weights can lead to a flatter belly, says Courtney Paul, a trainer at YG Studios in New York City. Beyond lifting heavier, you can maximize ab sculpting throughout your entire strength-training workout by making a few subtle form adjustments. (Still not sure about lifting heavy? These other reasons to lift heavy will convince you.)
To begin, when doing upper-body moves like biceps curls, triceps extensions, and overhead presses, keep your ribs "closed." (When ribs are "open," they poke forward and your abs turn off, so keep your spine long and neutral and your abs fully engaged.)
"This will ensure that your rectus abdominis stays firm and contracted throughout the move," says Michele Olson, Ph.D., a professor of exercise physiology at Auburn University at Montgomery.
For lower-body moves, including squats and lunges, focus on pulling up your pelvic floor muscles with each rep (pretend you have to pee and that you need to hold it). This will engage the hard-to-target transverse abdominis. To get more ab action while doing exercises for your back, such as rows and reverse flys, stand about 10 inches from a wall and lean forward until your forehead just touches it. Do your reps in this position. "It will force your abs to fire isometrically while you do the moves," Olson says.
And you may want to add in more single-leg exercises. Balancing can indirectly work abs by turning them on to help stabilize your body. For example, single-leg dead lifts fire up your obliques to keep you balanced as you hinge from your hips and extend one leg behind you while lowering a weight toward the floor with the opposite hand.
Whatever you do, don't slouch. Omri Rachmut, a trainer for Barry's Bootcamp in New York City, emphasizes perfect posture during every lift. "Keeping your head, shoulders, and hips aligned allows your core muscles to work more efficiently while you train," he says.
In indoor cycling
Take Laurie Cole's SoulCycle class in New York City and you'll be told to hold a one-minute plank before you pedal. This wakes up your abs and cues you to keep them tight, she says. Otherwise, they may cruise lazily through class, while your butt and legs do the work.
When you're in the saddle and riding at a moderate intensity, your ab muscles are continuously engaged at relatively low levels (about 8 percent of muscular voluntary contraction, to be exact), according to a study in the Journal of Applied Biomechanics. So for added belly burn during class, draw in your stomach from the rib cage while squeezing the muscles directly below and around the belly button, which keeps your abs engaged, says Monique Berarducci, a SoulCycle instructor in Greenwich, Connecticut. Then kick up your intensity and you've got the cycling equivalent of sit-ups: Ab engagement is significantly higher during sprints (17 to 30 percent) and when riding out of the saddle (17 to 22 percent), the same study found.
"You have to keep your abs flexed to stay balanced and in control," Berarducci says. When you're out of the saddle, stretch your arms in front of you (keep a soft bend in your elbows, and let your hands rest lightly on the handlebar ends) and pull your hips back over the saddle. This creates more distance between your chest and hips, which gives your abs more room to work. Also, eliminate excess bouncing when you're riding out of the saddle, and nix side-to-side swaying when you're seated. This forces your midsection to work along with your legs, hips, and glutes, Berarducci says. (Pair spinning with yoga and you'll get great ab cross-training benefits.)
When running
Vary your routine to include hill and sprint sessions and you'll firm your abs as well as your butt and legs. "When you run fast or up hills, your arms have to move quickly to help propel you, and this requires your abs to work harder," says Jason Karp, Ph.D., the owner of Run-Fit in San Diego and the author of The Inner Runner. (Try this speed-building hill sprints workout to see for yourself.)
For the most arm-pumping, ab-firming power, bend your arms 90 degrees (it's tougher to pump them to your advantage at a bigger angle). Keep elbows tight to your sides and swing forearms at as light angle toward your midline with hands loosely cupped. "Relax your arms and hands so there's no tension in your upper body, which helps your arms pump faster and better," Karp says.
For boot camp class
Explosive plyometrics-burpees, jumping jacks, box jumps-are both serious ab sculptors and calorie crushers. When Portuguese researchers put hand-ball players on a 12-week strength program and added plyos for the last seven weeks, the subjects reduced their belly fat by 12 percent. "Explosive moves enlist your entire core to stabilize and/or propel you, which results in maximal ab engagement," says Laurel Blackburn, the owner of BootCamp Fitness and Training in Tallahassee, Florida, who recommends squat thrusts (burpees minus push-ups), mountain climbers, and jump squats.
Throwing, tossing, or slamming a weighted ball are also good moves for tighter abs. Diane Vives, the owner of Fit4Austin/Vives Training Systems in Austin, Texas, says exercises like the overhead ball toss and the lunge with rotational ball toss work the core 360 degrees in two different ways: "They steady the pelvis and lower body to keep you supported while you toss the ball, and they help you accelerate as you throw and decelerate as you catch."
And if you do any of these exercises on an uneven surface, like a Bosu ball or sand, you'll skyrocket your ab strengthening, Rachmut says, because you have to brace your core so you don't wipe out.

The All-Day Energy Tips That Will Change Your Life
Tired of waking up without energy day after day? You're not alone. Your responsibilities and obligations might not be letting up any time soon, but there's good news: developing healthy habits has a huge impact on your energy levels.
Morning
- Don't hit snooze: Before you're even out of bed, this culprit sucks away energy for the rest of the day. Hitting the snooze button makes it harder to wake up and ends up affecting your energy levels all day long. A more consistent wake-up time will help you skip the snooze button and wake up naturally with more energy. If waking up on your own feels like a long way off, simply get up when your alarm goes off.
- Start hydrating ASAP: Drinking water helps your body perform at its top potential all day long, but first thing in the morning, it gives your digestive system a kick in the right direction and starts energizing your whole body. Keeping water at your bedside will help you start sipping as soon as you wake up.
- Choose the right breakfast: Eating a satisfying breakfast offers your body the energy and nutrients it needs to feel great all morning long. Take a tip from nutritionist Melissa Costello and go for foods that are a mix of complex carbs, proteins, and healthy fats. She says, "This will help balance [your] blood sugar for the day," which keeps your energy up and crashes away.
- Fit in a workout: Starting your day with exercise is one of the best ways to feel energized before you head to the office. Even better, during morning workouts, exercisers are more likely to burn more calories and work out harder - an added bonus! If you're not an early riser, don't fret; the most important thing is to make time for exercise at some point during your day.
Afternoon
- Get fresh air: Feeling stuck at your desk leaves you feeling drained and disconnected. Step away from work, go outside for some fresh air and sunny rays, and take a walk during your break. It may seem like a luxury to leave, but you'll come back to whatever you were working on with a fresh perspective and much more energy.
- Drink green tea: You might be tempted to reach for that second cup of coffee in the afternoon, but opt for green tea instead. It will keep give your body a boost - with a ton of extra benefits - and is less likely to affect with your sleep later that night.
- Declutter your workspace: When your desk (or inbox) looks like a war zone, it's setting you up to feel stressed out and wiped out. Take a few minutes every day to clean up and get organized, so it doesn't feel so overwhelming later. A calmer, more zen work environment keeps you feeling "on," connected, and productive.
- Eat an energizing snack: As tempting as those goods from the vending machine can be, they won't offer your body the sustainable energy it needs. Keep these healthy snacks on hand at work to stave off unhealthy cravings and support your needs.
Evening
- Skip the nightcap: After a long day, a few glasses or wine or a nice cocktail might seem like the perfect way to unwind, but alcohol can disrupt your natural sleep cycle and leave you feeling exhausted the following morning. If you're dealing with energy issues, it's best to just say no to alcohol before bed.
- Turn off electronics: If you keep your electronics on all night, it is affecting your sleep patterns and your demeanor the following morning. Before bed, skip the tube or your laptop, and wind down with an article or book instead. This change seems small but makes an enormous difference.
- Get to bed: Quality sleep is one of the best ways to ensure energy the next day. Those Netflix binges and extra chapters add up! Listen to your body, hit the hay earlier, and make sure you're getting at least seven hours of sleep every night so you wake up feeling fabulous, energized, and ready to take on your day.
