5 Ways Chia Seeds Will Help You Lose Weight

We love them for their superfood qualities, but did you know that chia seeds are also great for weight loss? From fighting fat to lowering your chances of overeating, there are several ways in which chia seeds contribute to a slimmer, healthier you. Take a look at these benefits, and start adding chia into your own weight-loss program.

  • High in protein. More protein makes you feel fuller longer, so you'll have less desire to snack in excess, or to overeat. More protein also contributes to lean muscle mass, which will help with your exercise regimen, too.
  • Lots of fiber. You probably know by now that fiber aids in digestion; this means you'll be less bloated thanks to your body being more regular.
  • Low carb. Each ounce of chia seeds only has 12 grams of carbohydrates, meaning your body will have less fat stored per serving consumed.
  • Major de-stressor. Chia seeds are great for your mood. The seeds are high in serotonin-releasing tryptophan and magnesium, as well as depression-fighting omega 3s. Less stress = less cortisol. Cortisol causes fat to cling to your belly, so you definitely want lower levels.
  • High in healthy fats. Good fats can burn body fat. They're also pivotal in creating a sense of satiety (making you feel full), just like protein, so you're less inclined to overeat and more likely to feel satisfied with your food.

This Breastfeeding Mom's Honest Quote About the Importance Of Actually Asking For Help

Despite nothing about her pregnancy or delivery going as planned, one anonymous woman recognizes that breastfeeding played a big part in helping to gain confidence as a mom.

However, none of this would've been possible if this mom-of-two didn't recognize and acknowledge how important breastfeeding was to her - and have the courage to ask for help. Due to complications, this mom felt robbed of enjoying her third trimester filled with maternity shoots and making decisions regarding childbirth. Instead, baby Evelynn was thriving in the neonatal intensive care unit, and her mom realized that breastfeeding was the last thing left that could potentially go as she originally planned - and she was determined to make it happen, despite any kinks.

"For all you moms out there who may struggle, I would like to offer some advice: be honest and ask for help. I was honest in stating my concerns, my frustrations, and an amazing NICU nurse took the time to help me one on one," she shared on Breastfeeding Mama Talk's Facebook page. "Evelynn and I would not be where we are now with breastfeeding had I not openly shared these fears, concerns, and frustrations. The biggest step in conquering anything is being truthful and asking for help."

The EpiPen Price Spike Is Making Life Even Harder For Allergy Moms

Having a child with allergies means always being on guard - looking at nutrition labels, avoiding certain outdoor (or indoor) areas, and denying play dates at houses with pets. Having a child with a severe allergy just got even more difficult following a huge spike in the price of EpiPens.

Many doctors recommend that people with serious allergies carry around two EpiPens - a lifesaving injection device to use during a severe allergic reaction - at all times. For parents, this could mean having a device in the car, at home, and at school just in case (not to mention that the devices, which are sold in dual packs, expire after a year, meaning annual replacements even if they weren't used).

Recently though, Mylan, the makers of the EpiPen, have made having the devices around in case of emergency more of a burden for many parents - the copay for two EpiPens has risen from about $100 to anywhere from $400 to $700 depending on pharmacy rates and insurance coverages.

Naomi Shulman has a 12-year-old daughter severely allergic to cashews and always has an EpiPen at school and home just in case. When purchasing two additional EpiPens to send to camp with her child this Summer, Shulman was shocked to hear that her copay had risen about $300 from last year and, for the first time in 10 years, considered risking not having the device around.

"I called the insurance company and asked why it was so high and was told that, actually, it's $700 total, and my copay is $400," Shulman told The New York Times. "It's very wrong. It's gouging [sic] parents about their children's lives. It's not like letting them sniffle. It's life or death."

Last year, EpiPen's competitor, a product called Auvi-Q, was removed from the market, giving EpiPen a monopoly on epinephrine pen sales. "This is a mainstream product that people carry, and it's getting harder and harder for people to afford it," said Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar. "It's just another example of what we keep seeing – outrageous price increases when a monopoly situation ends up in a company's lap."

Sorry, Chris Evans, but Chris Hemsworth Just Met the Most Adorable Captain America

When he's not busy being an adorable dad and a devoted husband, Chris Hemsworth is making time to mingle with some of his biggest fans, not matter how little they are. The actor is currently hard at work filming Thor: Ragnarok in Brisbane, Australia, but during some downtime on set on Tuesday, he approached a group of fans waiting to catch a glimpse of the film's stars behind a barrier. Chris, who was still rocking his Thor hair, chatted with a young boy dressed as Captain America. He later posted the photo on Instagram and used it as the perfect excuse to make fun of pal Chris Evans, who plays Captain America in the Marvel films. "Chris Evans chose not to work out for the next avengers movie, all good he's still awesome #thorragnarok #thor #captainamerica #avengers #youthfulskin." Seeing as how Chris Evans usually can't even contain his sexy muscles, hopefully he'll laugh this one off.

Costa Rican Community Bands Together to Help Toucan in Need

In Animal Planet's newest documentary, Toucan Nation, a toucan named Grecia with a mutilated beak is given a second chance at a healthy life. Filmmaker Paula Heredia went to Costa Rica after hearing of Grecia's story on an NPR station in New York. She said she knew this story was having an impact "among the scientists, the citizens, the legislators, and even the president of Costa Rica."

According to what Heredia shared with us, someone cut off the top piece of Grecia's beak, though they couldn't be sure who because the country does not penalize those who commit animal abuse. However, Heredia said, "the case of Grecia fueled activists to make a better law." And that is a large part of Heredia's documentary, along with Grecia's arrival at the rescue center and the process of fitting the bird for a 3D-printed beak.

In the process of the people of Costa Rica saving Grecia and getting him suited up with a brand-new beak that would change his life, they also banded together to fight for animal rights. "I hope that their example inspires people around the world to take action around the issues that concern them," Heredia said.

Watch the trailer for the inspiring documentary above, and make sure to tune in to Animal Planet on Aug. 24 at 10 p.m. to see Grecia's life change forever.

Rose Gold Blond Is Going to Be the Trendiest Hair Color For Fall 2016

Rosé season might be ending - but not when it comes to hair color. We recently got word from Butterfly Studio colorist Tamara DeFelice that rose gold blond hair is going to be one of the hottest hues for Fall.

"For a modern touch, keep most brightness around the face while staying a bit deeper in the roots throughout the crown," said DeFelice. "Concentrate highlights around the middle to ends of the hair. This keeps maintenance lower, and adds instant depth to the look."

Though it is easier for blondes to add some pink to their hair, it is also recommended for brunettes with warm undertones. "This color will accentuate the peach and gold tones in women with warmer skin tones," she said. "Also, it will bring out the honey tones in their eyes."

The shade has been interpreted in diverse ways from Emma Stone's deep "desert rose" shade to subtle pink highlights and ombre fades.

"Play up your Fall blond by asking [your stylist] to add in hues of rich rose gold and butterscotch," DeFelice suggested.

Keep reading to see how gorgeous rose gold blond looks on Instagram's finest.

Priyanka Chopra's LBD Has a Sexy Twist You Can't See - Until She Turns Around

Whenever an LBD includes a hint of flair, taking it beyond that classic design and helping it stand out in a crowd, you can best bet we're fans of it. That's why we zoomed in on Priyanka Chopra's look when the actress stepped out for the Hands of Stone premiere on Monday night. From the front, Priyanka's BCBG Max Azria number appeared modest, including just an tiny slit on top. But once the star turned to the side? Well, that's when the piece really caught our eye.

The back of Priyanka's dress was actually quite revealing, showing off a good portion of her back and including lace details. She could hardly contain her smile as she posed for the cameras, and though it may have been because Usher was by her side, we're thinking the true source of her happiness was her outfit. If you're as excited about Priyanka's look as she was, shop the Giulianna dress ahead. Then check out some style lessons we've learned from the star.

Divorce Rates Are Actually Highest Right After Family Vacations

Despite the best intentions of a relaxing trip, it's no surprise that family vacations can be filled with a fair share of stress. From packing struggles to reservation issues, many parents come home feeling like they need a vacation from their vacation.

However, recent research from the University of Washington shows that family vacations aren't just leaving parents temporarily drained - they could also be the tipping point for divorces. The new study, conducted by associate sociology professor Julie Brines, saw a pattern of dissolving marriages linked to seasonal trips.

Divorce rates were consistently found to be the highest in March and August - despite other factors including unemployment rates and the housing market. Considering that it takes a few months to begin the divorce process and file with an attorney, researchers believe that these peak months are the delayed effects of the Winter holiday trips and Summer vacations.

"It was very robust from year to year and very robust across counties," lead researcher Professor Julie Brines told Medical News Today. It's important to note that this study doesn't cite vacations as the cause of marital separation but that they are linked.

These seasonal trips are often a time when couples hope to work on their relationships but they don't always live up to everyone's hopes. "People tend to face the holidays with rising expectations, despite what disappointments they might have had in years past," said Brines. "They represent periods in the year when there's the anticipation or the opportunity for a new beginning, a new start, something different, a transition into a new period of life. It's like an optimism cycle, in a sense. They're very symbolically charged moments in time for the culture."

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are pairing up yet again for a musical drama set in Hollywood, and it's already giving us all the feels. We'll update that playlist as soon as the second song is available!

Emma Stone Serenades With a Sweet Melody in the Dreamy Trailer For La La Land

After playing lovebirds in Crazy Stupid Love and Gangster Squad, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are falling in love yet again in Damien Chazelle's musical, La La Land. Following the release of a photo from the film in January, the teaser trailer is here, and it's beyond romantic. Although there is no dialogue in the clip, it does feature the song "Audition," performed by Stone in the film, as we meet her character Mia whose relationship with jazz musician Gosling goes through ups and downs as they struggle to succeed in Hollywood. It's dreamy and surreal and might give you a few Moulin Rouge flashbacks. Finn Wittrock, J.K. Simmons, Rosemarie DeWitt, and John Legend (yep) are all costarring in the film, which will hit theaters on Dec. 2.

Jessica Alba Reveals the 1 Hairspray You Need For Beach Waves (P.S. - She Made This)

If you've been searching for #hairinspo anytime over the last decade, you've likely saved at least one (or a dozen) images of actress-turned-entrepreneur, Jessica Alba. Be it a new cut, color, or style, the woman has a seriously enviable mane with the Google results to prove it. Lucky of us, she's been working hard to bottle up her iconic tousled texture into her first ever hair care line (coming October 2016), so you can achieve Alba-like results without a trip to the salon.

Quick backstory if you're not totally familiar with Jessica's brand, The Honest Company.
Let's backtrack: In 2011, the Hollywood leading lady joined, The Honest Company, a holistic brand of non-toxic skin care and household items. It quickly gained a cult following - especially with moms - so it September 2015, the range expanded to include cosmetics. The creamy highlighters and blushes help you to mock Jessica's angelic lit-from-within glow (which by the way, is no joke in real life). I'll let the $1.7 billion dollar valuation speak for itself when I say: she's developed some pretty popular beauty products over the last five years.

So, what inspired her to segue into hair care? "It was a natural extension for us," Jessica told me when I met her at a press event. "I felt like there really wasn't a brand or line that delivered clean, better-for-you ingredients, and the performance you want out of prestige hair care."

Since I got a sneak peek at the offering, I spent all Summer testing it out, and I can honestly say (pun intended) that I am impressed. The 11-product lineup ($18-$30) includes three targeted ranges: Beyond Hydrated for normal hair, Truly Restored for damaged hair, and Honestly, a collection of four styling products. The minimalist packaging featuring clean white, navy, and copper-toned bottles made the bottles worth of earning prime real estate in my shower and ob my vanity. And the results we're equally as pretty.

I couldn't believe how easily my hair styled after using the Moisture Milk Leave-in Conditioner and Sea Salt Spray. And by styled, I mean that I sprayed, brushed, and went about my morning routine. By the time I went to grab my blow dryer and get to work taming my typically unruly head of curls, I somehow achieved this cool-girl texture that I didn't want to touch.

Whether you're eco-obsessed or not, it's comforting to know the products you're putting on your head are made with good-for-you ingredients like coconut juice (for hydration), sunflower seed oil (for conditioning and shine), and Himalayan Pink Sea Salt (for texture). But sticking to an ingredient lineup that reads more like a grocery list, than a periodic table, comes with its challenges. "There are benchmarks that people have for performance and when we are working on formulations, we have to live up to that," she said. "Just because we're using more naturally derived ingredients, doesn't mean people will settle for subpar results."

Like any good entrepreneur, Alba looked to her closest friends for constructive feedback on the line. It just so happens that when you're Jessica Alba, those close friends are some of the most talented hairstylists in the world, like Jen Atkin and Jennifer Yepez. After testing the formulas on themselves and on clients, they were able to report back if textures needed revamping. "I would take their feedback to my chemists to discuss how we could tweak the formulas to achieve the desired result," Jessica noted.

The Honest Company hair care doesn't launch until October 2016 (available at Ulta, Ulta.com, and HonestBeauty.com) but we have a first look at the entire offering, so you can map out your wish list before it's time to stock up. We also got Jessica to reveal some of her favorite products and dish out savvy styling advice.

Laurie Hernandez, Best Friend Ever, Totally Saved Simone Biles From a Major Fashion Faux Pas

This Is 1 Pregnant Woman's Tragic Experience With the Zika Virus

Satu is concerned that Americans aren't taking the Zika virus epidemic seriously enough. She didn't know anything about it until she lost her pregnancy because of it.

Over Thanksgiving weekend 2015, the Finnish woman living in Washington DC went on vacation to Latin America at 11 weeks pregnant. She didn't see the mosquito that bit her during her trip, nor did she think she would be infected with a mosquito-borne illness.

Satu, who has opted to use a different name in order to protect her privacy, hopes that sharing her story will prevent other parents-to-be from enduring a similar heartache. "There are people who are not aware of the risks related to Zika. If I had known then, I would have protected myself better," Satu told NBC News. "If even one person avoids getting infected with Zika while pregnant, that's good for me."

Satu returned from her tropical vacation just a few months before the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention first warned pregnant women about the debilitating birth defect, microcephaly, associated with Zika. She came down with a rash and was more lethargic than usual, and because she was pregnant, she quickly went to the doctor to ensure that everything was OK. Her doctor sent her home, stating that there was nothing to worry about.

Although Zika-related birth defects usually can't be detected until later in the second term and Satu was feeling better, she insisted on figuring out what had been going on. When she tested positive for the Zika virus, Satu's ultrasounds looked normal, so she tried to remain hopeful. But after a few weeks passed, she went in for an MRI, which clearly showed the damage to the unborn baby's brain.

"This particular MRI was so deficient in brain tissue that most people felt this child was extremely unlikely to make it through the pregnancy and unlikely to make it after delivery," one of Satu's doctors, Roberta DeBiasi, told NBC News. "These were not possible or slight findings. They were severe."

After learning the extent of the dire prognosis, Satu and her husband decided together to terminate the pregnancy at 21 weeks. "The child would never walk or talk and would need constant, 24/7 care through its life, which would be a short one," Satu said.

Satu became infected just weeks before world health officials understood the depth of birth defects caused by Zika and ended up donating her medical tests as well as her fetus to science in the hopes of helping doctors fully understand the depth of damage this virus could cause to unborn children. When doctors examined her fetus, they learned that the virus was in the brain, placenta, muscles, liver, lungs, and spleen.

Thanks in part to her case study, the World Health Organization and the CDC declared for the first time that Zika was in fact the cause of many horrific birth defects. Satu hopes her case will help other understand the extent of the risk. "It is very human to think it's just one mosquito or to say, right now I don't see any mosquitoes," Satu said. "It is very easy to say 'It won't happen to me.'"

See Exactly How Laurie Hernandez Celebrated the End of the 2016 Olympics

After earning gold at the Summer Olympics gymnastics team final and silver during the beam event, Laurie Hernandez, of course, celebrated her astounding athletic achievements at Rio 2016's exciting closing ceremony on Aug. 21.

The 16-year-old Puerto Rican-American, who is the Final Five's youngest member, ditched her signature leotard and top knot for the send off, instead opting for Team USA's custom (and adorably preppy) Ralph Lauren uniform and a half-up hairstyle that showed off her gorgeous curls. Luckily for us, Laurie and her teammate Aly Raisman documented all the fun on social media! Read on to relive Laurie's night, straight from Instagram. Then, admire her best competition moments during the Games.
