This Is Exactly What Happens to Your Body When You Don't Take a Rest Day

If you're someone who has a hard time giving yourself a break, and you've been skipping rest days, then listen up: while we admire your dedication, skipping your recovery is doing you more harm than you think.

We wanted to find out exactly what happens to your body when you train too hard, so we talked to Michelle Opperman, director of group fitness for Crunch, and Jan Milano, CSCS and sports performance coach at DIAKADI. Did you know the effects can be so severe physiologically and psychologically that there's a name for it? It's called "Overtraining Syndrome."

Want to know what Overtraining Syndrome looks like? Here's what happens to your body when you don't take time to recover from intense exercise (or endurance events!):

  • Glycogen stores are depleted. Opperman and Milano both noted that your glycogen decreases. Glycogen is your body's energy source, and not something you want to eliminate. Milano says "decreased glycogen may contribute to the lowered lactate responses," meaning your muscles fatigue more quickly.
  • Corticosteroids increase. We know that cortisone and cortisol (stress hormones) are not good for weight loss, and even add to belly-fat retention. Milano told us that these elevated levels also depress the immune system by inhibiting the reaction of lymphocytes to antigens (basically, the fighter cells can't fight the bad invader cells). So overtraining equals a higher likelihood of getting sick.
  • Your heart goes into overdrive. "Both resting heart rate and submaximal exercise heart rate are increased," said Milano. Be nice to your heart. Take a breather.
  • Your performance suffers. Opperman told us that when sufficient rest is not included in a training program, your ability to perform (i.e., continue training, growing muscle, getting stronger) plateaus or declines, because your muscles literally cannot recover and regenerate. So things just get worse and worse.
  • You'll lose muscle mass. Consistent breakdown + no recovery = bye, muscles. That's the opposite of what you're trying to do, right?
  • You'll feel AWFUL. The tiny tears in your muscles cannot heal, which results in inflammation, swelling, and tenderness. Opperman says the feeling will "become extreme, lasting for days." She also noted that you'll feel physically exhausted for an extended period as well, which could make it hard for you to perform your day to day functions.
  • It messes with your mind. Muscular fatigue is not the only thing Opperman and Milano warned about. The fatigue and distress extend psychologically, and Milano noted that you'll notice mental changes before physical ones. "Decreased vigor, motivation, and confidence; raised tension, depression, and anger accompany an individual's recovery," said Milano.

Do yourself a favor. Go to yoga, don't skip savasana, do your cooldowns, and take a day off to recover. Need some pointers? Make sure you keep our recovery checklist handy, or try any of these recovery essentials.

17 Celeb Moms Who've Shared Their Breastfeeding Photos

Think the breastfeeding selfie trend is just a thing for your Instagram friends to share with each other? Not quite! While the women in your new-moms class are sharing pics of themselves and their nursing tots with family and friends, celebrity moms are sharing theirs with millions of fans around the world. Audrina Patridge is the latest celebrity mom to show herself doing the deed with her daughter, Kirra Max Bohan - though it hasn't been the easiest experience for her. The former star of The Hills told People that breastfeeding has been more painful than the C-section. "The first two to three weeks were excruciating. But I got through it!" Audrina said.

How Aloe Vera Can Make Your Lashes Grow, Fight Hyperpigmentation, and More

While you're likely scouring department store shelves and drugstore aisles for the newest, most effective beauty potions, it's also worth digging into your garden or kitchen cabinets for powerful DIY remedies. In addition to honey and coconut oil, aloe vera is a time-honored, natural ingredient that can be used in a variety of different treatments. We've rounded up 12 ways to use the plant's soothing gel that you can easily whip up yourself with just three (or fewer) items. Read on, then watch our video on how to incorporate aloe vera into your beauty routine.

  1. Lash Growth Serum: If you're addicted to lash extensions, you'll want to try this natural remedy for strengthening and lengthening your fringe. Mix one teaspoon of aloe vera gel with one teaspoon of black castor oil, then apply the blend to your lashes with a clean mascara wand before bed. Be sure to do a patch test first if you have sensitive skin.
  2. Soothing Undereye Treatment: The plant's gel is naturally anti-inflammatory. Dab it underneath your eyes to see a reduction in puffiness.
  3. All-Natural Makeup Remover: Apply organic aloe vera gel to a cotton pad and swipe over your skin to clean off foundation and other products.
  4. Hair and Scalp Treatment: Aloe naturally contains pectin, which can fight dandruff. Liquefy fresh aloe gel in a blender and massage the potion into your scalp, then coat hair from root to tip. After leaving on overnight, rinse it out in the morning for healthier hair.
  5. Acne Fighter: Rub the inside of a fresh aloe leaf across clean skin to banish blemish-causing bacteria.
  6. Hyperpigmentation-Fading Solution: Aloe is packed with vitamin C, which brightens dark spots. Apply dabs of gel to any acne scars or other marks on your skin nightly.
  7. Firming Face Mask: The vitamin E in aloe will keep your skin smooth and taut. Mix two spoonfuls of aloe vera gel with two spoonfuls of Greek yogurt (full of exfoliating lactic acid) and two spoonfuls of refreshing grated cucumber. Apply all over your face and rinse off after 20 minutes. Try it at least twice a week for a glowing complexion!
  8. Nail Strengthener: Blend two spoonfuls of aloe vera gel and two spoonfuls of witch hazel. Applying regularly to your nails with a cotton swab will instantly make them look shinier and strengthen them over time.
  9. Nourishing Lip Balm: This easy treatment will instantly soothe a parched pucker. Mix one teaspoon of liquid coconut oil with one teaspoon of aloe vera gel and one teaspoon of Vaseline. Pour into a small container and let it harden, then apply frequently with your fingertip.
  10. Blister Healer: To reduce pain and swelling after wearing a particularly disagreeable pair of high heels, soak a cotton ball in liquid aloe vera, apply to the blister, and secure with a bandage.
  11. Foot Deodorizer: Aloe actually acts as a deodorant, and by combining two tablespoons of it with with half a teaspoon of bacteria-fighting tea tree oil, you'll reduce questionable foot odor.
  12. Sunburn Soother: Though you've likely already used aloe for this purpose, you can transform the ingredient into an even more refreshing version of itself by freezing it. Scoop out the gel from the inside of an aloe leaf, place it into an ice cube tray, and pop this into a freezer. Lightly rub the aloe ice cubes over angry skin.

A Review of Nespresso's Historic Cafecito de Cuba by an Actual Cuban

In a historic move that reflects Cuba's changing political landscape, Nespresso just debuted a Cafecito de Cuba capsule that is the first Cuban-made coffee to be sold in the United States in 50 years. Though the launch is becoming a de facto symbol of improving relations between the two countries, for Cuban-Americans who have already been enjoying their own homemade cafecitos - which taste pretty damn close to the real thing - it also didn't seem like that big of a deal.

Growing up in Miami to Cuban parents, I quickly adopted the lexicon applied to Cuban coffee. There's the cortadito, a sweetened espresso finished off with steamed milk. The colada is a larger espresso that's meant to be shared with other people - lest you have a death wish. Then there's the cafecito: Cuba's simple, yet spectacular, answer to the typical espresso.

Though the many Cuban restaurants and cafés in Miami don't have access to coffee beans from Cuba, they still whip up a cafecito that's overflowing with nostalgia and enough caffeine to keep you up all night, if you're not careful. As a result, I not only consider myself spoiled but also pretty damn scrupulous.

My first time trying the Cafecito de Cuba capsule was not free from skepticism, but if I'm being honest, I must admit that it holds up to a traditional cafecito pretty well. Nespresso described the coffee as having an "intense roasted character," featuring notes of wood and tobacco leaves. It also boasts an intensity of 10 on its 12-point scale, and that's what really impressed me. The cafecito was a much-needed afternoon pick-me-up that delivered that acute burst of energy I'm all too familiar with. The taste, however, was lacking a bit of that rich smokiness and depth I was looking for, which ended up making it feel more like a traditional espresso with the caffeine powers of a cafecito - which isn't all that bad, really.

Nothing can ever really compare to the taste of my abuela's homemade cafecitos, or even the one I can pick up at small café windows (or ventanas) typically run by a squadron of badass Cuban women. I don't, however, expect Nespresso to live up to those nostalgia-laden expectations. For those moments though when I'm in need of a comparable and comforting boost, this cafecito will definitely do the trick.

Nespresso's Cafecito de Cuba capsules are available online and at Nespresso boutiques nationwide.

Why iPhone 7 Users Should Temporarily Avoid Airplane Mode

Owners of Apple's latest iPhone 7 are experiencing an unfortunate glitch that significantly diminishes their cell service after switching airplane mode on and then off. In many cases, cell service is completely down for some time after switching off the airplane mode setting.

According to MacRumors, Apple is reportedly investigating the glitch. The company, however, has helpful information on what to do if you've experienced this problem before or are currently: restart your device, take out your SIM card, reset your network settings, and more.

In the meantime, you should probably avoid airplane mode altogether if you're an owner of the brand-new phone. But, if you encounter this glitch, you might get a replacement phone, reports MacRumors.

In addition to the cell service issue, other people are observing a faint hissing sound that the phone emits when it's overloaded. The complaint has resulted in its very own hashtag, #HissGate. It's another reason you should maybe consider keeping your current iPhone and try a different new Apple product instead.

This Zoo Is Opening Their Doors Early to Cater to Guests With Autism

Any parent knows that a day at the zoo can be exciting, yet very stressful, but one zoo is doing something special for their guests with autism to alleviate the overwhelming circumstances that can arise while visiting the zoo. On Oct. 1, the Taronga Zoo will be opening its doors at 8:30 a.m. for guests with autism and their families and friends. By allowing these families to enter an hour early, guests will be able to avoid heavy crowds and loud noises while enjoying "the exhibits, animal meet and greets, and the Sky Safari Cable Car."

The zoo has partnered with Autism Spectrum Australia to train over 120 employees on how to cater to their guests for the special event. It's reported that over 40 families have registered for the first Access Taronga day. This Australian zoo is setting an incredible example, and we hope other big attractions can follow their lead.

This Beauty and the Beast Tutorial Is Worth Trespassing Into the West Wing For

Though YouTube blogger and Disney enthusiast Traci Hines is known for her aspirational hipster Little Mermaid-inspired wedding, it's her latest take on Beauty and the Beast's Belle that has us planning our Halloween costume.

Traci recently shared a makeup tutorial inspired by Belle's look on her big date with the Beast, er, Prince. She started the tutorial with her foundation already done, and then applied a rosy blush onto the apples of her cheeks to achieve Belle's subtle glow.

After filling in her brows with a soft brown powder, she lightly contoured her face, and then lined her lower lash line with a white pencil to get "those big, Belle doe eyes." She finished off her eye makeup with some gold eye shadow, black liquid liner, mascara, and false lashes. A breakdown of some of those steps is shown below.

What's different about Belle's look during her romantic night with the Beast is her noticeably darker lip color. To emulate that ruby shade, Traci blends together three pink and red different liquid lipsticks. She also creates the illusion of a fuller lip by overlining her lips with a pencil, filling them in with a darker shade, and applying the lightest shade at the center.

While the finished look, shown below, is incredibly spot on, the tutorial itself is achievable and can probably be done using products you already own.

This Bride's Wedding Was So Stylish, It Put Fashion Month on Pause

Colby Jordan aka author of style site MinnieMuse chose a wedding date right in the middle of Milan Fashion Week. She invited plenty of industry insiders like Karlie Kloss, Derek Blasberg, Princess Beatrice of York, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in France. It's no surprise everyone already had a fabulously packed suitcase.

While Karlie wore a lace Dolce & Gabbana dress to the ceremony, Ashley stunned in a vintage-inspired beaded midi, and Mary-Kate showed us all the updated version of a tuxedo dress. Colby herself looked like quite the chic bride in sheer sleeves. Her modest Valentino Couture gown featured a high neck, full skirt, and matching veil. We Bet Kim Kardashian Just Added This Whole Spring Collection to Her Closet

We can only imagine what was going through Kim Kardashian's mind as Balmain's Spring '17 collection made its way down the catwalk. The star, who sat front row at the show, is a big fan of the brand, frequently rocking Balmain pieces on the red carpet and even out and about. She was probably ready to shop. This time around, however, creative director Olivier Rousteing had something different in mind. The "Balmain army has shed its armor," he revealed in the shows notes, hinting toward what was to come.

While the collection still favored metallics, browns, and even greens and oranges, the designs were flowy, softer, and more feminine. Pieces billowed out as models - including Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn - made their way down the runway. Capes, sheer styles, silky dresses, and plenty of snakeskin could be seen, and - despite that switch in direction - revealing cutouts along with chain-like pieces popped up. Olivier also embraced the single earring trend, which we've been seeing everywhere as of late.

We're willing to bet Kim was pretty happy with all the sexy, eye-catching designs she saw, and is likely already adding them to her wardrobe. Take a look at every stunning look ahead, then brace yourself: they'll be on the red carpet and plenty of It girls before you know it.

23 Incredible Costumes From the First Star Wars Day on a Disney Cruise

Cosplay has no limits - not even geography or water can stop any fan from dressing up as their favorite character. This was definitely the case at the first Star Wars Day at Sea aboard a Disney cruise ship.

Sure, you might think that lugging around all the materials required for an epic cosplay might deter cruise ship guests from doing it. But you're wrong. Guests on the Disney Fantasy ship brought makeup, lightsabers, Jedi robes, and everything imaginable to complete their dressing-up dreams at sea. Regular characters like Luke Skywalker made an appearance, but new ones from Star Wars: The Force Awakens also graced the ship - including so many Reys!

I Eliminated Dairy, Gluten, Sugar, Booze, and Coffee From My Diet, Surprisingly Didn't Kill Anyone

Prior to starting the AaHa Restart Cleanse, I had never eliminated anything from my diet (my diet is rooted in balance and finding nutritious foods that I love to counteract the occasional cheeseburger or slice of pizza).

So when my co-workers forced invited me to join them on a week-long cleanse that would eliminate gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, processed food, alcohol, and coffee, I was a tad reluctant but absolutely intrigued. You get to have three full meals per day, with no snacking throughout the day (with the exception of coconut water or a green juice or green tea). While alcohol and coffee wouldn't be an issue for me to cut out (they're not staples in my diet by any means), I'd definitely have a hard time eradicating Cinnamon Toast Crunch with whole milk. THAT is a staple in my diet.

What's more is that not only would I be stuck on this crazy diet, but there would be actual healthy people holding me accountable throughout the week. The cleanse founders and other participants would be placed in a group text on WhatsApp so they could closely monitor . . . I mean, encourage and support . . . cleansers on their journey. I'd have to upload my meals. There was no room to cheat.

All in all, I looked at this as a week of challenge, personal growth, and learning. Here's what went down:

(Slightly) More Energy

While I can't sit here and tell you that I experienced a magnificent, unparalleled surge of glorious energy and my qi was exuberant, I did have a slight boost in energy. Particularly in the mornings. I attribute this to the fact that I took care to make a large, well-rounded breakfast each morning, woke up a tad earlier, and put good things in my body (read: I took a break from Cinnamon Toast Crunch). It's probably important to note that I don't rely on coffee . . . ever. So the lack of caffeine didn't ding my energy levels at all.

I Had to Pee All Day, Every Day

Something that you should know: if you're on a cleanse, you drink A LOT of water. Especially in this particular cleanse. And when you want a snack? Coconut water. And/or plain green tea. The influx in fluids incurs an influx in trips to the ladies' room, so get your Fitbits ready, your step count is about to go up.

The Community Thing REALLY Helped

Look, I was not really feeling the group text at first - I'll be honest. I thought my meals weren't pretty enough and I wasn't enthusiastic enough in the first couple days to really participate. I didn't know these people, and I assumed they were all Gwyneth Paltrow clones who eat like this every day and survive on the essence of almonds and that they were secretly judging me. That, plus the fact that I always had like 87 notifications at any given moment.

Once I got over my weird hangups, the sense of community was actually pretty awesome. And I was wrong about the Gwyneth thing. With the group text, I felt like I was held more accountable, and that when I did make a good choice, someone did see and they did make me feel good about it. If you've ever been presented with a healthy and an unhealthy choice, and you thought "whatever, I'm getting cheese fries, it's not like anyone else cares," then I'd highly recommend choosing a cleanse or program that has a community aspect.

Even though the women in this group were total strangers, I was inspired by their meals, their choices, and their honesty. There were slip-ups, mistakes, and more, but the group was supportive. They were also there to answer questions (mostly "is this cleanse-approved?") and to offer advice if you were stumped on what to make for a meal.

Better Habits Were Formed

Through this cleanse, I learned adult things like "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" and "not all delicious meals come from a cardboard box." Goodbye for now, ramen, Easy-Mac, and cereal dinners.

I also learned a lot about strategic grocery shopping, the importance of meal prep, and how not every food has to have dairy or gluten to be delicious.

I also learned to think outside the box and get more creative with my recipes. I made my Italian great grandfather's lentil recipe from scratch, filled with hearty veggies and savory spices. I created a vegan "drawn butter" with a little olive oil and apple cider vinegar to dip my artichokes in, and it was actually incredible. I made my oats with coconut milk and my scrambled eggs with extra virgin olive oil, had so many dairy-free smoothies, indulged in chia puddings for breakfast, and developed a new love for Harmless Harvest coconut water as my favorite treat.

Ravenous Moments Happened

The lack of snacking ability (snackability?!) in this cleanse actually led me to be particularly ravenous at the end of the workday. When lunch is at noon and you don't get home until 6 or 7 p.m., bad things can happen. And by bad things, I mean, my blood sugar plummeted and I was ready to tear people on the subway apart trying to get home to a bowl of coconut milk oatmeal just to satiate and stabilize myself enough to make dinner. I craved carbs, I craved sugar, and I wanted to cry.

That said, my particular work schedule doesn't lend itself to a nonsnacking plan. If I was a stay-at-home mom and didn't have to be in the office until 6 and commute home for an hour, I'd make myself dinner at 4:30 or 5 and be chillin' with no problems. Just something to keep in mind.

Going forward and doing this cleanse again, I'd strategize a bit to either have my dinner in the office or to have some kind of cleanse-approved snack. It's less about "mindless snacking" (which I totally understand the need to eliminate) and more about not creating a starving sensation so you're more inclined to binge.

I Believe in Myself a Lot More

OK I know this point sounds like a motivational cat poster, but it's the best takeaway I got from this cleanse. Because the cleanse was only a week long, it was a small jumping off point with a low barrier to entry - essentially the training wheels for a bigger, more challenging, even more impactful cleanse. I breezed through a week, so I'm totally ready for more. Hooray for inner strength and dieting stamina!

I'm scaling up in October to try my first full-month cleanse with the TIU 31-Day Challenge, adhering to a similar nutrition plan of clean eating, and I totally feel confident after learning everything I did from the AaHa cleanse. I know I'll have more energy (but need to go to the bathroom . . . a lot), and I know I'll have to meal prep and plan my recipes and grocery lists. I'll ensure I have healthy snacks, I'll get creative with my food, and I'm DEFINITELY starting a group text with my friends to force encourage them on their journey.

What It Was Like Growing Up With No Eyebrows

Many women grew up with the typical trials and tribulations of being a teenager: hitting puberty, developing facial and underarm hair, and working on a daily basis to not completely mortify ourselves. Easier said than done, right? But what if in addition to all this, you dealt with a disorder that caused you to pull out your own hair - specifically your eyebrows and eyelashes?

YouTube star and actress Arden Rose has trichotillomania, an impulse control disorder which gives you the compulsive urge to pull out your hair. For Arden, it was directly linked to stress, similar to biting your nails or the skin off your cuticles. It's estimated that 2.5 million people have trich - a surprising number if you think about it. "Once you have a disorder, you learn to hide it very well," said Arden. "It was a comfort zone for me, but also, being embarrassed about something . . . you go home, you feel bad about yourself, all you want is a comfort zone again. It's a vicious cycle," she said.

She was 13 when it started happening, as a result of wearing coats of mascara. "I would put loads of mascara on, and I loved pulling the clumps out of my mascara. It got to the point where I was like, 'if I keep applying mascara, I can pull out all these clumps.'" She also did it with brow gel, which resulted in both sparse lashes and nonexistent eyebrows. In addition to having a genetic predisposition for the disorder, not fitting in at school also contributed to her stress. "I didn't have a great friend group growing up, I didn't relate to a lot of girls my age. I felt like I was on a different path than a lot of other people," she said.

You never get rid of the disorder. Instead, you do your best to contain it. For Arden, that means having her boyfriend keep her accountable and building up a support system through YouTube. As for her advice for those getting bullied about their looks? "The main motto is 'stop giving a crap.' Ultimately, people are all narcissistic. They care about themselves, the way they look, they care about what you think about them. They don't really care about what's going on with your face. No one actually cares, so you shouldn't care in turn."

Check out Arden's full episode of Pretty Unfiltered, and find her on go90's series Mr. Student Body President, as well as her YouTube channel.

California has its burritos, Louisiana has gumbo, Massachusetts has chowder, and New York has pizza. Those who live in Manhattan have the advantage of knowing exactly where to score the best slices. Why Deadlifts Are the Best Exercise For Weight Loss

Losing weight can often feel like a full-time job. You have to eat (mostly) healthy and also make sure you're getting a healthy mix of strength training and cardio. But there are a few shortcuts you can take, which come down to picking the right kinds of exercise to maximize your efforts. Why do a bicep curl when you can work even more of the body by doing a squat with overhead press? And if you only have time to fit in one move today, don't you want it to be THE move? Yeah, we thought so. When it comes to toning up, encouraging weight loss, and working your entire body in one swoop, few moves can beat a deadlift, trainer Holly Rillinger told POPSUGAR. And Holly should know, besides being a Nike Master Trainer and Flywheel Sports Master Trainer, she also used to play professional basketball.

"It's such a great move because it uses the biggest muscles in your body: your legs - [and] the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism," said Holly. "Anytime we use our hips, our body releases testosterone and growth hormones, which can be scary words for women, but all you have to think of is 'lean' when you hear those words. So being able to work your hips and your lower body in one movement really ends up challenging your core and your shoulders so it turns this one move into this total full-body workout."

Single moves that do so much are a rarity, so incorporating deadlifts into your routine means you can sculpt the upper and lower body simultaneously, freeing up more time for you to get on with other things in your life. Just keep in mind that while a deadlift may look simple, it's not. Doing the move incorrectly could result in you not getting the full benefit of the exercise, or worse, injury. Holly, who is also a spokesperson for BIC Soleil Shine, attributes the difficulty of the move to the fact that "there's so much going on" when you perform the exercise, and given that it's such a powerhouse, it makes total sense. "I think it's totally worth having a trainer look at you when you start deadlifting or at least film yourself to make sure you're doing it correctly," she said.

  • Stand holding dumbbells in each hand, arms at your sides, with your knees slightly bent. If you don't have dumbbells, you can also use a weighted bar.
  • Keeping your arms straight and knees slightly bent, slowly bend at your hip joint, not your waist, and lower the weights as far as possible without rounding your back, which should remain straight. Looking forward, not at the ground, will help you avoid rounding your back. Keep the weights close to, almost touching, your legs.
  • Squeeze your glutes to slowly pull yourself up. Be sure not to use your back or round your spine! Beginners should aim to take four seconds to bend down and two seconds to pull up.
  • Do three sets of 12 reps.

Dog Owners: Make Sure You Follow These 3 Rules If You Have Roommates

Your pup is your best friend and constant companion, the apple of your eye and the trusty shadow that follows you around the apartment each day. As a pet parent, it can be easy to forget the entire world doesn't always see your four-legged pal through those same rose-colored glasses.

If you want to avoid conflict with others (whether that be with a random roommate or even your significant other), being mindful of space and boundary needs will go a long way. Follow these three simple rules for smooth sailing.

1. Be 100 percent responsible for all dog-related chores.

When you're living with a roommate, especially one you consider a friend, it's tempting to ask for pro-bono help. Friends do friends favors, right? But overloading a friend with your responsibilities can lead to a boatload of resentment. Stick to this rule: if you signed yourself up for a responsibility, it's exactly that - your responsibility. Occasional last-minute things happen in life, but if you find yourself texting your roommate every time you hit up happy hour instead of heading home to let out the dog, you may be inadvertently putting a strain on your relationship. It's worth spending extra cash on arranging a reliable dog walker or sitter to avoid unnecessary conflict.

2. Ask about boundaries.

Even if your roommate gave you the green light to live with a pup, don't assume that's where the conversation should end. Asking about boundaries instead of assuming another person's comfort level is always the best route to ensuring everyone is happy with the living situation. For example, your roommate might not be comfortable letting the dog roam into her space or onto shared furniture. Even though most animal-lovers wouldn't think twice about snuggling with a pup in bed, some people just don't feel that same way. It's always better to ask than to be sorry!

3. Own up to any pet-related incidents.

Even the most well-behaved dogs have the occasional slip-up. An episode of jumpiness, a bathroom accident on the carpet (it's never the wood floors, is it?), or damaged furniture are bound to happen eventually when you're living with a pet. Animal-lovers know that's par for the course! But even if a roommate tells you it's OK, always be sure to apologize immediately and take responsibility for your pet. Remember that a roommate may just want to quickly smooth it over by telling you not to worry about it, but it's key to insist on paying for any damage and to demonstrate that you take the incident and your roommate's comfort level seriously.

The Emotional Moment This Dad - Who Is Battling Cancer in the ICU - Met His Newborn Baby Will Leave You in Tears

Despite all of the joys and fears that come with any pregnancy, one family had to deal with a roller coaster of emotions during the final weeks that nobody saw coming.

Just three weeks before his fiancé, Jessica Li, was due to give birth to their first child, Cagney Wenk was diagnosed with stage four cancer. Instead of waiting for Jessica's contractions to start before they headed to the hospital, the couple spent the final days of her pregnancy at the same place where she planned on delivering - only now Cagney was fighting for his life.

Since his aggressive glioblastoma diagnosis, Cagney has endured a biopsy, craniotomy, radiation, and chemotherapy. While he was recovering from the surgery to temporarily remove part of his skull in order to relieve pressure to the brain, Cagney's intensive care unit nurses collaborated on a meaningful idea for this deserving family.

They reached out to Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, which is an organization of professional photographers who volunteer their time and talent to offer remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby. Cagney and Jessica were thrilled when Sarah Boccolucci volunteered to document their son's birth. When Jessica went into labor with baby Levon, Cagney was moved from the ICU - complete with all of his medical equipment and nurses - to the labor and delivery ward in order to be an active part of his child's birth.

"There is a point during the birth where Cagney tells Jessica that they are surrounded by all the love in the world right now," Sarah told the Huffington Post. "It is my hope that people will see the video, feel the love this family shares, and help lift them up and make a donation if they are able."

Ruthie Lost 15 Pounds in 6 Months by Doing This at Dinner

When it comes to losing weight, one truth remains the same: if you don't understand your daily habits, especially your relationship with food, it's very challenging to create long-term change. For Ruthie, gaining that understanding is exactly what helped her not only lose 15 pounds in less than 24 weeks, but also keep it off for over a year.

She teamed up with motivational coach Ricki Friedman, founder of Break the Weight, to discover what was weighing her down, physically and mentally. The six-week program offers a unique approach to changing your lifestyle by focusing on creating healthier daily habits through accountability, support, and motivation. Break the Weight focuses on making really small changes - the things you do on a daily basis.

Ruthie Before

Ruthie says the program helped her transform the way she thought about food. "I'm not dieting; I'm just living," she writes in an email to POPSUGAR. "Thinking of food as fuel. If I have a craving, I satisfy it. If I want pizza, I eat it. However, I just don't necessarily eat the whole pie, or even more than a slice or two. I can recognize when I'm hungry and when I'm full."

Ricki says it's essential to ask yourself the right questions: "It's all about understanding the voids you're trying to fill. Am I hungry? Am I bored? Am I lonely?"

She credits Ruthie for doing the work internally. "Ruthie and I worked together as a team," Ricki shares via email. "She really started to understand her routines and why she was eating even when she wasn't hungry."

Ruthie goes on to explain her own personal struggles with weight loss, saying, "I used to think that I had to be restrictive to lose weight. Not eat a lot or just work out for the goal of weight loss. In a nutshell, I struggled a lot."

Ruthie After

Self-forgiveness played a huge role in Ruthie's success. She says, "I've learned through BTW to forgive myself when I have off days. I dust myself off and move on. Before BTW, if I had a slip up in my diet, I would be incredibly hard on myself, I would take a 'f*ck it' attitude and go downhill and fast. Ricki has helped me recognize that this is a process and a bad day doesn't make or break my progress."

Changing her mindset has helped Ruthie find some peace of mind. Ruthie writes, "I have changed my relationship with food. It's only right to quote Ricki here: 'food is fuel.' I didn't used to think of it that way. I love to eat, but I have learned that food used to be more than fuel for me - it was an emotional outlet I used to satisfy me when I was bored, sad, happy. Now, while I still enjoy eating, I recognize it is to fuel my body, not my emotions."

Ruthie's Diet and Workout Plan

Breakfast: I have a chocolate Shakeology shake with peanut butter and almond milk practically every morning. It is like dessert for breakfast, and I'm still getting a ton of nutrition. I love it, and it fills me up!

Lunch: I usually end up getting a big salad for lunch with shrimp or tofu, and I love getting fruit in it.

Dinner: I try to plan in advance every Sunday, and I love experimenting with recipes. Lately I have been really into spiralized zucchini or butternut squash and some riced cauliflower recipes. When I don't get to plan or need something quickly, my go-to is scrambled eggs with veggies and cheese, which I always keep on hand.

Ruthie walks 10,000 steps a day, which is a requirement in the program.

"I walk. A lot. When I first kicked things off with Ricki less than a year ago, I got a Fitbit and tracked my steps without making any changes, just to see what my starting point was. I was not even getting 7K a day on a regular weekday (excluding the gym). I changed my commute (less subway, more blocks), I always opt for the long way, and I take walks around meals. One time, I had a flight delay while I was in the Denver airport and I just walked up and down the long terminal rather than sit around all day."

She also eats between 1300 to 1500 calories a day and aims to make dinner her smallest meal of the day, something she learned from the program. Ruthie says, "Change is hard, especially when you're trying to lose weight, but it's not about being mean to yourself or quitting or saying screw it. It's about learning from your mistakes, being a little kinder to yourself, and moving forward. People need to understand this. It needs to be talked about more. The ebb and flow of motivation and how to deal with setbacks, because that's really what throws people off or why they quit."

Ruthie continues: "The past is the past and I try very hard to leave it there. Setbacks are a part of life and human nature. I try to go back to the basics right away. I don't wait for the next week or the next month to reset. I shake it off and hit the reset button as soon as possible. I forgive myself and I look forward."

Goldie Hawn's Reason For Never Marrying Kurt Russell Makes Total Sense

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been together for 33 years, and despite never officially tying the knot, they're still one of Hollywood's strongest couples. That fact, however, doesn't stop people from constantly asking them about their decision not to marry. Earlier this week, Hawn clarified (hopefully once and for all) during an interview on the British talk show Loose Women.

"I would have been long divorced if I'd been married," she said. "Marriage is an interesting psychological thing. If you need to feel bound to someone, then it's important to be married. If you have independence, if you have enough money and sense of independence and you like your independence, there's something psychological about not being married because if gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other. For me, I chose to stay, Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice."

This Little Girl's Tearful Speech About the Charlotte Police Shooting Will Break Your Heart

At an emotionally-charged Charlotte City Council meeting, 9-year-old Zianna Oliphant stood before the packed space to express her heartbreak in the wake of the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott by Charlotte police officers. The video of her speech, shown above, will bring you to tears.

Zianna started her speech by saying, "I've come here today to talk about how I feel, and I feel like that we are treated differently than other people." She added, "I don't like how we're treated. Just because of our color - [that] doesn't mean anything to me." It was at this point that Zianna had to stop as she broke into tears.

She then continued by conveying the frustration and hopelessness she feels as a result of the ongoing police shootings of unarmed black men and women. She said, "I've been born and raised in Charlotte and I've never felt this way until now. I can't stand how we're treated." Zianna ended her speech with this powerful statement: "It's a shame that our fathers and mothers are killed, and we can't even see them anymore . . . We need our fathers and mothers to be by our side."

Since the speech, Zianna's mother spoke with the NBC News and said her children are in a police youth league and have always looked up to officers, thereby making the news of the shooting even more difficult for Zianna to grapple with.

7 Foods to Absolutely Avoid If You Want Clear, Glowing Skin

Two weeks ago, I went to Whole Foods and stocked up on coconut milk, almond butter, frozen veggies, fresh berries, organic meats, wild salmon, and quinoa. My boyfriend could interpret what this meant: Lauren is back on another food detox.

It started last Summer when I completed Dr. Frank Lipman's two-week Be Well Cleanse. This is a 14-day program in which you eliminate the food groups that most people are sensitive to, including gluten, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, nightshade vegetables, and eggs, among other things, replacing them with a plant-based diet that includes select organic lean meats and fish. You also drink three shakes a day incorporating Dr. Lipman's special blend of powders and take supplements. I learned a ton about myself, my habits, and my skin.

Though I have yet to return to the official cleanse, I do repeat some of the guidelines from it when I feel off-balance, seem bloated, or have less-than-desirable skin (blochy, broken out, puffy under-eyes). Typically, I try to eliminate gluten, dairy, and sugar for about a week or two until I feel and look better. Within three days of sticking to this diet plan, my skin brightens, I fall asleep easier and earlier, and my jeans fit better. It's not about dieting or losing weight; it's about creating harmony within my body. A healthy gut undeniably yields more gorgeous skin.

According to Dr. Lipman, "Your skin is your largest organ and a window into what's going on inside your body. Poor food choices that cause inflammation can lead to numerous skin issues."

If a cleanse is a bit dramatic for you, no worries. You can still reap some of the benefits by making these seven food swaps. Dr. Lipman outlined which foods to avoid, why they are toxic for your skin, and what to replace them with.

Nutritious to who? Northerners say food subsidy program needs overhaul

Nutrition North Consultation

The Federal government's often controversial Nutrition North program came under fire again Monday night, as Northern residents argued it's not keeping people from going hungry or making most food affordable.
