1 Eyebrow, 3 Ways Transformed Completed Just Using Makeup
When it comes to grooming your eyebrows, you've probably already tried to tweeze, pluck, or thread them to perfection. And while this certainly works to ensure you avoid the dreaded unibrow, thick, shapely eyebrows have been seriously trending in the beauty world, so it's not necessarily a bad thing to leave those face-framers untouched.
However, whether you groom your brows or not, your arches can ultimately change your entire look when altered (even if it's just a smidge). Certain brow shapes have the ability to balance out your features; some can give your face an ultra-lifted appearance, while others can make you look more youthful - making brows, clearly, your most transformative feature.
Luckily, no matter what outcome you're looking to achieve when shaping your brows, there's no need to reach for tweezers to do it. We've rounded up the best makeup artist-approved tricks to create three very different brow shapes that you can DIY at home - no plucking necessary.

Some Schools Are Canceling Classes On Election Day Due to Safety Fears
With all of the chaos that this year's presidential election has brought to the country, some schools are fearing the worst on Election Day and have gone so far as to cancel classes on Nov. 8. While public schools have always been used as polling places in the past, some parents and law officials have raised concerns about having children in school on this day, even if the voting is not taking place there. According to the National School Boards Association, it's currently unknown how many schools will be closed on Election Day, but in districts across the country, classes have been cancelled or polling places have been moved from schools to other buildings in local areas. Erin Gadd, a district spokeswoman from Lorain, OH, said, "Emotions are running high during this presidential election" and that her district made the decision to cancel classes back in August.
"There's going to be a lot of people coming in and out of the buildings throughout the day as they show up to vote," said Jeff Graham, the Lorain schools superintendent. "We want to ensure a smooth experience for everyone concerned. We felt it would be best for our students and community."
With a growing fear of violence across the country, district officials are making the decision to keep kids out of school for preventative measures.

UK Toys R Us Stores Plan Autism-Friendly Quiet Shopping Hour For Families
Shopping during the holidays is sensory overload for everyone, but for children on the autism spectrum, it's a particularly daunting task. The signs, the music, the announcements, the Santas running around - it's enough to make anyone run for cover, particularly those with sensory issues. To create a more comfortable shopping experience for families facing these issues, Toys R Us stores across the United Kingdom will offer a "quiet hour" on Nov. 6. The morning shopping hour will feature more dimly lit, music-free aisles and no announcements over the loud speakers. Management will also designate quiet zones for families and place autism-friendly signage throughout the stores.
Toys R Us Marketing Director Mike Coogan told The Telegraph, "Holding such events has given our teams extreme pride in reaching out to autism groups within the community. Making slight adjustments to stores and creating a quiet shopping period allows children and young adults to experience the fun in a toy shop, regardless of their disability."
It's an experience that more and more stores and kid-friendly attractions are trying to create for children on the spectrum. Earlier this month, an Australian zoo opened its doors early for guests with autism so they and their families could avoid heavy crowds and loud noises while enjoying the exhibits. And over the Summer, a ShopRite store in Philadelphia converted one of its checkout aisles into a sensory-friendly lane. The store manager swapped sugary candy and snacks for items like crayons, stress balls, toys, and wet wipes after a little girl had a particularly upsetting meltdown in a traditional checkout line.
We can only hope that more child-friendly locations adopt such programs in an effort to make all of their customers feel more comfortable.
This Bride Wore So Many Dresses at Her Indian-American Wedding, It's Hard to Keep Track
When your buddies NAS and Jay Sean perform at your wedding, you know you can expect a good playlist. But stylish party outfits? Well, that was up to the bride, Hayley Murthy, to master. Hayley and Dee held a gorgeous ceremony at Bacara Resort & Spa, gathering all their friends for the occasion. But that was after the pair headed to India for their engagement party, where Hayley slipped into a beautiful blue embroidered gown. Later, she celebrated her bachelorette in a white monogrammed swimsuit, and finally, it was time for her to pull out the rest of her bridal looks.
Hayley walked down the aisle in a voluminous Monique Lhuillier gown that would make any girl weak at the knees, but she brought along plenty of minidresses too, along with one asymmetrical long-sleeved sheath perfect for a formal rehearsal dinner. Right before the final reception, Hayley joined the groom's family for Hindu traditions where bundles of flowers were thrown over her sparkling Sabyasachi Couture creation. Read on to feast your eyes over every ensemble she wore during the memorable weekend.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Had a Fashion Moment Every Couple Could Relate To
While Angelina Jolie is one of the most stylish women on the red carpet, that doesn't mean all the characters she plays are up to par. But in her self-directed film, By the Sea, Angelina took on the role of Vanessa, an unbelievably chic woman living in France during the '70s. One fashion item she's always got on hand? A pair of oversize sunglasses.
The importance of the accessory is outlined in Angelina's Nov. 2015 cover feature for WSJ Magazine:
Jolie was equally painstaking about By the Sea's 1970s period wardrobe - including her oversize sunglasses, which [Brad] Pitt's character, Roland, keeps righting for his wife after she tosses them, a lot, onto tables, a mini pas de deux Jolie took from their former marriage. 'Brad hates that I always scratch my glasses,' she said, adding that in the film, the gesture shows that Roland still cares for her character, Vanessa. 'Even when he wants to punch her in the face, he still fixes her glasses!'"
While Angelina and Brad didn't suffer the same troubles as their characters, we love the poetic license Angelina took, turning a simple couple's quirk into a weighty symbol for her movie. Whether you're watching Angelina on screen or on the street, there's no denying the lady looks good in her shades, from aviators to a fierce cat-eye silhouette. Read on for 17 pictures that are pure proof

The Best Way To 'Discipline Without Damage,' From Toddlers To Teens
Our friends at Fatherly break down the keys to understanding your children and targeting their behavioral patterns for effective discipline.
Crib Notes summarize all the parenting books you'd read if you weren't too busy parenting. For great advice in chunks so small a toddler wouldn't choke them, go here.
Have you given up on time-outs, behavior charts, and reward schemes to control your children's behavior? Did you find all of them to be coercive, gimmicky, and incongruous with your kid's development? Or did you just think, "Wow, this is a time-consuming pain in the ass"?
In Discipline Without Damage: How to Get Your Kids to Behave Without Messing Them Up, Dr. Vanessa Lapointe gives you permission to replace all of those parenting techniques with something a little more touchy-feely. And since nobody has time to feel all the feels about their kid's behavior, it's been distilled to its essence, bottled, and delivered to you so you can discreetly enjoy it anywhere. (Just remember to cover it with a paper bag.)
1. Children Have Needs
Lapointe, spends much of the book trying to convince the reader that children are not little adults who are fully in control of their own actions and emotions. The scientific term for that is, "No shit."
These children, she posits, have needs. She wants you to focus less on your kid's behavior and more on your own. Do you meet their emotional needs? Do you use imagination, patience, and compassion to create connection and trust with them, and be the special big people (that's what she calls parents or guardians: "SBPs") they need? She also wants you to know this is all based on science - a claim she supports with a liberal smattering of footnotes.
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS
Basically, you should use your emotional connection to your kids to figure out what's causing problematic behaviors and work with them to solve those problem. If you're having trouble breaking free of traditional attitudes toward disciple, she suggests …
- Rather than focusing on order, focus on "making room for childhood to unfold."
- "Find ways to let yourself relax" even amidst the chaos of childhood.
- "Ignore the standards of the world" and focus on what your children need. That would be, in no particular order: You, your compassion, your presence, your understanding, to feel them, and to protect them.
2. It's Just a Phase (Seriously)
Trying to be the law and order parent (which is different from Chris Meloni, who is a Law & Order parent) often means fighting against the natural stages of your kid's psychological and emotional development. When that happens, there's a lot of law, but usually no order. Accept where your kids are on the emotional growth chart. You have demands and their brains might not yet have the capacity to meet them. You monster.
- 2-to-3-year-olds: Impulse control is impossible, and meltdowns, screaming, and tantrums are normal. They have little individuation and see themselves in terms of being "created by their big people." They have newfound independence (i.e., they say "no" a lot).
- 3-to-4-year-olds: The ability to regulate their frustration and upset increases, but they still need a lot of help doing so from their SBPs. They're into testing limits and exploring; more into their own preferences and wants. They can be aggressive, but increased verbal ability should mitigate this.
- 5-to-7-year-olds: Getting more independent; they see themselves as not just a creation of their parents. Getting better at regulating themselves, but will still occasionally melt down. They can hold 2 or more seemingly contradictory thoughts in mind at the same time. It helps with problem solving ("I want that ball, but I will have to jack up little Tommy to get it - and I don't want to get in trouble").
- 8-to-10-year-olds: They have their own sense of style, passions, interests, and terrible taste in music. They overstep boundaries and need "supervision or guidance around that." They're able to regulate but still prone to occasional outbursts or meltdowns.
- 11-to-12-year-olds: They have strong opinions and want to take stands and push boundaries. They love to "discuss" things - like their opinions about the rules. Their urge to individuate through ill-considered self-expression may seem like purposeful rebelliousness. Like a navel ring.
- 13-to-17-year-olds: Like 11-12 year olds, but moodier, more door-slammy. Despite their adult appearances and claims of adulthood, they are still kids and still need their SBPs.
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS
- Adjust your expectations to your kids' developmental stage. It's not you using the wrong words or techniques - it's just that you "shall serve no fries before their time."
3. How Damage-Free Discipline Works On The Ground
If your knee-jerk reactions and frustration isn't working, you could do worse than to try this approach. You can also get more advice in this vein from Dr. Laura Markham, who preaches a similar "do no harm," gospel of dealing with kids who are just acting their age.
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS
- Respond With Connection: When a child is acting out, instead of focusing on the behavior, focus on the child's feelings. Key phrases to use: "You look like you are having a hard time," "I will help you. Come with me and we will figure this out."
- Stay Low: The more upset the kid is, the calmer you need to be - but simultaneously exude confidence and concern.
- Drop A Flag: Instead of dressing down a kid while they're acting out or just wound up, in a calm and nurturing tone, give a brief (5-word max) reminder of what he needs to know at the moment. Save the conversation for a calmer time. Examples of verbal flags: "Gentle hands." "Kind words." "That must stop." Or one that isn't in the book, "Put down the knife"
- Maintain Firmness With Kindness: Use a "no/I know" approach. For example: "No, you can't give the cat a haircut/I know you're disappointed."
- Give No Explanation: At least not to a kid in the throes of a meltdown. Maintain the boundary and save the chit-chat about why until they're settled.
- Debrief Once The Dust Settles: Once the kid has accepted the boundary you have established or enforced, calm has prevailed, and you are in a state of alignment (even if it's a week later), remind them of the incident and its positive resolution. Give them reassurances that you will continue to be there to keep them safe, and subtly draw attention to your connectedness. Resist the urge to chant "S-B-P Rules!"

How 1 Group of Nurses Made Halloween Extra Special For 35 NICU Babies and Their Families
Just because these newborns are celebrating their first Halloween in the neonatal intensive care unit doesn't mean that they have to miss out on any of the fun.
Instead of letting the holiday pass by, a group of nurses and March of Dimes volunteers at St. Luke Hospital in Kansas City, MO, decided to get crafty. They brought the holiday spirit to these precious tots and their parents by designing tiny costumes fitting for these little superheroes and fighters.
"Families in our NICU may spend weeks or months here, and it can be an emotional time," hospital spokeswoman Michelle Manuel told POPSUGAR. "Providing an opportunity for them to celebrate Halloween with their little ones allows them a sense of normalcy and to celebrate their baby's first milestones, which is what every family wants to do."
From Batman to a butterfly, parents picked costumes to match their little ones' personalities and the volunteers handmade 35 miniature ensembles. Along with professional photos of their newborn's first Halloween costume, parents were also given a "Trick or Treat, smell my feet card" complete with their infant's footprints and a Halloween book to read together as well as a handmade crocheted pumpkin.
Emmalee Schaumburg, one of the three photographers who all happen to be moms of former NICU babies and who volunteered their services to capture these special costumes, understands the importance of photographing these moments even when they occur during a hospital stay. "Now that [my daughter is] 2 and a half, I am so glad I can go back and look at those pictures and see how far she's come," Emmalee told CNN. "It's so important to remember how far these babies have come."

This Open Letter to Nordstrom on Why It Should Drop Ivanka Trump's Brand Is a Must-Read
If you're an avid user of social media, chances are you've scrolled past a post - or hundred - expressing negative views on Donald Trump. But now, one woman's opinion is going viral. In an open letter format, Twitter user @shewhovotes wrote to Nordstrom, asking the store to stop selling the presidential candidate's daughter's brand, Ivanka Trump.
While the writer first expresses her love for Nordstrom, revealing that she's a "Level 4 cardholder" and even used to work as a vendor in stores, things quickly take a sour turn. "I find myself increasingly conflicted about supporting a store that carries any Trump brands," @shewhovotes says, stating that Ivanka continues to support her father's hate speech and sexual assault allegations, while Nordstrom continues to support Ivanka.
However, it's not only Donald that has @shewhovotes fired up. She also cites (literally) the fact that Ivanka's company refuses to provide maternity leave for women workers, has people working in sweatshop conditions, and that the brand also violated the copyright of Aquazzura. The letter was posted along with the hashtag #grabyourwallets and urged people to share.
Ivanka got her chance to respond to everything on Good Morning America, when George Stephanopoulos asked what she's like to say to the women boycotting her brand. "The beauty of America is people can do what they like, but I prefer to talk to the millions, tens of millions of American women who are inspired by the brand and the message that I've created," Ivanka said. "I never politicized that message. People who are seeking to politicize it because they may disagree with the politics of my father, there's nothing I can do to change that."

This New Challenge Is Putting More Black-Owned Beauty Brands on the Map
There have been plenty of fun beauty challenges surfacing on YouTube recently. But a recent YouTube challenge is encouraging beauty personalities to use their platform to promote one with a deeper meaning.
YouTube vloggers and makeup pros Alissa Ashley and Alyssa Forever teamed up to create the B.O.M.B. Challenge. B.O.M.B., which is an acronym for Black Owned Makeup Brands, is a challenge created to encourage the YouTube beauty community to bring more awareness to underrated black-owned cosmetics brands. The duo tagged other YouTubers, asking that they create a full makeup look using products from black-owned cosmetics lines.
Jackie Aina was among the beauty experts to take the B.O.M.B Challenge. She prefaced her video by letting her nearly 800,000 followers know the objective of her tutorial and the overall challenge. She continued to express that though the purpose of the B.O.M.B movement is to spotlight black-owned makeup lines, it is far from an exclusive challenge. In fact, many of the brands used in the tutorial carry products with hues that flatter a diverse range of complexions, making them suitable for people of all races. Examples in the tutorial include Coloured Raine Cosmetics, Lena Lashes, and Shea Moisture (but you can find the complete list in her link description box).
Jackie encouraged her followers and fellow YouTubers to take Alissa and Alyssa's challenge in hopes of spreading awareness to these underrated brands and their offerings. "If you can slather 100 different highlighters on your face, I don't see how far-fetched it is to ask someone who is not black to support black-owned beauty brands," she declared to her followers. She went on to use the high-pigment, high-quality products, creating a gorgeous Summer-approved makeup look boasting glitzy emerald eyes and a peach-pink pout.
In an industry where so many black women are still not catered to by major brands, it excites us to see YouTubers like like Alissa, Alyssa, and Jackie using their platforms to truly make the beauty industry a more inclusive and diverse place. Hopefully the efforts of the B.O.M.B. challenge will encourage makeup-lovers of all races to step outside of their comfort zone and embrace lesser-known beauty companies. If you'd like to get a head start on your own B.O.M.B. challenge, start by checking out some products created by these inspiring black women.

No Star Has Ever Pulled a Style Switch-Up Like Selena Gomez
It takes a lot of confidence to completely revamp your look, especially when you're in the public eye. Selena Gomez knows a thing or two about that. The performer has managed to successfully define her style from the street to the red carpet to the stage, but as they say, "it takes a village." Selena credits much of her transformation to stylist Kate Young, who she began working with in 2015 while promoting her Revival tour.
Before that, she developed a relationship with Louis Vuitton designer Nicolas Ghesquière, and he's dressed her for many events. Selena has become a face of the brand, repping her favorite fashion house at the Met Gala and beyond. In 22 photos, you can see how she's held onto her sex appeal but embraced sophistication, all while managing to keep her feet firmly planted on the ground. Of course, it helps when you're rocking Louis Vuitton's sturdy platform boots.
You're Going to Want to Scream After Trying to Solve This Math Problem
Whether you're a math pro or someone who stays away from it as much as possible, you're going to want to try and figure out this problem.
Posted on Facebook by Nejib Tej on Aug. 17, the problem has more than 92,000 reactions, 17,000 shares, and 689,000 comments. It might look simple at first, but has quickly divided people into three different answers: 21, 22, and the 40s. Try to solve it yourself.
Which answer did you arrive at? Hopefully, the answer 21. Here's how to break it down.
The first question, with the horses, will lead you to figuring out the each horse is worth 10. The next question is where it gets tricky. To arrive at the answer 18, each horseshoe is two. Since there are two horseshoes, that means the problem reads as 10 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 18. When you arrive at the next problem, you find that the boots are worth 1 each. So, this problem reads as (2+2) - (1+1) = 2.
Finally, the last problem should be 1 + 10 x 2. Before you start adding 1+10, remember the rules of PEMDAS, which states that multiplication needs to be done before any addition. This means you do 10 x 2 = 20 + 1 = 21. Ta-da! Take a breath - that was a lot to process.
The tricky part with this problem is that some people believe the horseshoes in the second problem are actually multiplied together - not added. So that problem would read as 10 + (2 x 2) + (2 x 2) = 18. So from now on, the horseshoes are 4. To arrive at the answer 2 in the next problem, that would make the boot 2. This would make the final problem 2 + 10 x 4 = 48 or 42, if you didn't follow PEMDAS.
@DailyMirror its 48 right? if a horse = 10, as shoe = 2 and a horse shoe = 4 2+10 x 4 = 48
- AutismoPrime 🌐 (@KylekYourself) September 6, 2016
The internet is of course severely upset and confused, but people on YouTube and Reddit are offering their explanations as to why the answer 21 is correct.
We hope that didn't drive you too crazy.

Whip Up Lea Michele's Lightened-Up Quesadilla When You're In The Mood For Mexican
If there's one thing we've learned about Lea Michele it's that her approach to eating healthy is simple and satisfying. During a recent Facebook Live discussion with Shape Magazine, Lea shared that she keeps her diet clean by stocking her home with wholesome eats. However, that doesn't stop her from enjoying her favorite comfort foods.
We caught up with Lea at the Shape Body Shop event in New York City and she shared that like most of us, she finds it hard to not indulge during the Fall. "I absolutely love soup in the Fall" she said. When I feel like indulging I definitely always have a bowl of soup with grilled cheese. You cannot go wrong with that combination."
Lea revealed that she tries to maintain regular healthy eating habits, but she doesn't believe that you have to completely cut off foods you typically enjoy. "I always try to ask myself how I can take something I really love and make it healthy. When I want something on the healthier side I always go for a quesadilla."
Lea's go-to quesadilla recipe is also supereasy to whip up at home (even if you're vegan!). Instead of packing up on meat and cheese, she opts for a ton of veggies in a gluten-free or spinach tortilla, topped with vegan cheese, salsa, and guacamole. "I love that you can fill quesadillas with anything and still feel full" she said. You also get that feeling of eating an authentic quesadilla, even if you make it with healthier ingredients, which is super important to me. So always find wholesome ways to enjoy your favorite comfort foods."
But the one flavor you won't catch Lea indulging in for Fall (or anytime soon)? Pumpkin spice. "I feel like the only girl in the world that hates pumpkin spice, but I just can't do it. I'm a black coffee kind of girl with no cream and no sugar. Not only is it too sweet but it just ends up hurting my teeth. However, if you give me cheesy-anything, I'll eat it like there's no tomorrow. I'm definitely a sucker for snacking on string cheese." Same, girl. Same.

9 Creative Themes (and Gift Ideas!) to Get You Through All 8 Nights of Hanukkah
Some kids who celebrate Hanukkah feel like they are missing out on a mountain of gifts, but it's really their parents who have it hard - they have to come up with exciting surprises for not one day but eight. Every family has their own traditions, but some balance out the presents by saving a "big" gift for a particular night while distributing smaller and more economical treats throughout the remaining days. In order to make the anticipation last, parents have to get creative, which can be draining - especially when kiddos aren't appreciative of sock night or other low-key days. One way to make the excitement last throughout the extended week is by coming up with a theme for the celebration and choosing eight gifts around that activity or fandom. Some parents might plan to spend less or more over the course of the week, so we've provided a variety of prices that can get you started and will surely please every little one on your list.
Jennifer Aniston's Favorite Fall Staple Is One You Might Have Given Up On
We've been watching Jennifer Aniston style tights since the '90s, when she worked them with mini skirts as Rachel Green on Friends. But fast-forward to 2016, and the actress still pulls them off IRL. Read on for Jen's best fashion moments in stockings, from the red carpet to date night, then pull out your own pair so you can re-create her sleek looks this Fall.
This Year's Fantasy Bra Was Actually Molded to Fit Jasmine Tookes's Body
While becoming an Angel is pretty neat, there's one honor that exceeds it in a Victoria's Secret model's eyes: wearing the Fantasy Bra. This year's jeweled design cost a whopping $3 million to make, so obviously only a special lady like Jasmine Tookes could wear it. While Jas just received her wings back in 2015 (along with the likes of Taylor Hill and Stella Maxwell), it's clear why she was chosen: she's superchill and fun to be around, sort of like your best girlfriend, and she was more than happy to talk about her new gig when we met up with her at brand's new Fifth Avenue flagship.
Scroll through for some little known VS Fashion Show facts, like how the bra was molded to Jasmine's body and why she's so tight with her fellow Angels. Then check out all the details we know about this year's runway event, which takes place in Paris.

The iPhone 7 AirPods Have Landed - Here's What You Need to Know
At Apple's highly anticipated event unveiling the upcoming iPhone 7, one product update in particular sparked a lot of conversation and near controversy. On Sept. 7, Apple CEO Tim Cook proclaimed the death of the iPhone headphone jack and traditional headphones as we know them.
In lieu of its usual headphones, Apple will introduce wireless ones referred to as AirPods. Below, we've listed what they are and how exactly they'll work.
- Advanced sensors: The AirPods use advanced technology to detect when they're in your ear. If you'd like to pause whatever you're listening to, simply remove one or both of them. The sound will automatically resume once you put them back in.
- Easier access to Siri: To access Siri, simply double-tap the AirPods. From there, Siri will also be able to control the volume of your music, check your battery life, or do anything else that would otherwise involve you touching your phone.
- You'll be heard more clearly: AirPods use accelerometers to know when you're speaking on the phone and will filter out external noises to improve the sound and clarity of your voice.
- Charging them is a nonnegotiable: Though they are meant to deliver five hours of listening time, the headphones do need to be charged by placing them back in the corresponding charging case. The charging case can emit 24 hours of charging time until it, too, needs to be charged.
- They aren't cheap: The AirPods will retail for $159.
- There is a way to hold onto your old headphones: If you're not interested in getting the AirPods, you can still use your old headphones with the adapter that will ship with the new iPhones. One end will connect to the lightning port and the other will have a headphone jack opening.
Unfortunately, the AirPods were supposed to arrive in late October. However, an Apple spokesperson told TechCrunch that the product isn't ready yet. "The early response to AirPods has been incredible," said an Apple spokesperson to TechCrunch. "We don't believe in shipping a product before it's ready, and we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers." Guess you'll need to keep waiting if you wanted a pair.
What the World's Most Realistic Fake Beef Burger Actually Tastes Like
When I had the chance to try the Beyond Burger, often touted as the world's most realistic faux-beef patty, I had my reservations. I've always been of the opinion that there are two kinds of vegetarians: those who still pine for meat and are always looking for ways to replicate it, and those who are kind of grossed out by it and don't really care about finding a substitute. I fall into the latter camp. Still, I wasn't going to pass up the chance at such an exclusive taste test. Beyond Burgers are currently only available for purchase at Whole Foods locations in 11 states, and when fast-casual vegan chain Veggie Grill rolls them out on its menu on Nov. 2, they will only be offered at the Hollywood, CA location where I got to try it. (It goes wide to all 28 Veggie Grill locations in December.)
The First Impression
On Tuesday night, my boyfriend and coworker - all three of us pescatarians - took seats at Veggie Grill's counter as a stream of servers started carrying wooden cutting boards topped with the undeniably good-looking burger and a side of fries out of the kitchen. I got my platter first, and while I waited to dig in, I absentmindedly grabbed at a little piece of charred "burger" that had fallen by the wayside. As the smoky, slightly burnt morsel hit my tongue, I froze. How was this not meat?
The Science of Beyond Meat
This is where the research and science behind the Beyond Burger and Beyond Meat, the company behind it, comes in. The hyperrealistic burger, which is built from a proprietary blend of pea protein, sunflower oil, and other ingredients, is intended to replicate the structure of actual meat: that fibrous, fatty, muscle tissue that gives beef its springy, dense, juicy texture. And it does a pretty damn good job of that. Beyond Meat has loftier goals, too. The company cites human health, climate change, animal welfare, and natural resources as issues it hopes to address through its faux-meat creations.
The Nutritional Benefits
Another obvious bonus? The Beyond Burger is healthier than your typical beef burger. It's got more protein and iron, less saturated fat, zero cholesterol, and no pesky antibiotics and hormones. It does clock in at about 3 calories more than a typical hamburger - 290 to beef's 287 - but in the grand scheme of things, that's a minuscule price to pay on the nutritional front. Beyond Meat isn't the only company in the imitation meat game, of course. Its most often-cited rival in the space is Impossible Meat, in which Bill Gates is an investor. The Impossible Burger just so happens to be served at a vegan restaurant just down the block from me, where it apparently often sells out, but I haven't yet tried it. (If I was a little squeamish about trying the Beyond Burger, then I am even more squeamish about the Impossible Burger, which made a synthetic cow blood from a molecule found in plants to replicate the juice of a beef patty. No thanks.)
The Verdict
As I took the first real bite of my burger, which was slathered in Veggie Grill's "secret" aioli, and topped with caramelized onions, melt-y vegan American cheese, ripe tomato, and a crunchy leaf of iceberg lettuce, I felt like I remembered what beef tasted like . . . even though it's been 20+ years since I ate it. It was like a nostalgia bomb went off in my mouth. The "meat" was chewy, dense, and pleasantly drippy with grease and "juice" (made from beets) like a real burger should be. And when I inspected the spot where I'd taken a bite, the slightly pink inside of the burger looked disturbingly, but impressively, just like meat.
My boyfriend wasn't as wholeheartedly impressed as I was with Beyond Burger's imitation; he thought the patty felt a little too thin, a little too factory-made to satisfy like a real hamburger. But my coworker and I both agreed that if we'd ordered a veggie burger at a regular restaurant and this had shown up on our plate, we'd certainly send it back, convinced the kitchen made a mistake and gave us the real thing instead. So, while the Beyond Burger might not completely satisfy a real hamburger-obsessed meat lover, it more than does the trick for vegetarians craving an animal- and earth-friendly way to enjoy an American classic. Coulda fooled me.

From Stray Dog to Instagram Star: Popeye the Foodie's Heartwarming Success Story
Long before Popeye the Foodie discovered Instagram fame, or even a family to call his own, he was just a lonely stray dog wandering the streets of Los Angeles. His hu-mom detailed his rough beginnings to Bored Panda, describing him as "super skinny, heavily matted, (and) dirty" when she found him and brought him home. Initially, she didn't even intend to keep Popeye as her own. But sure enough, he worked his way into the hearts of his new humans and they didn't really have a choice but to make it official.
Thankfully, those horrible days as a stray pup are now long behind Popeye. He spends his time hopping between trendy, dog-friendly restaurants, 'gramming adorable snaps to his following of over 112,000 fans and counting. Although seated nicely in front of delicious foods, Popeye's mom reports he only gets nibbles of dog-friendly foods. And if all else on the menu fails, his mom carries a bag of treats for him, just "in case there's nothing he can have." Bon appétit, Popeye!
