10 Thoughts All Regular Gym Goers Have in January

For regular gym goers, January is the most dreaded time of the year. It's the time when people recover from their New Year's Eve hangovers, swear they're never going to drink again, and decide that this is going to be the year they actually follow through on their fitness New Year's resolutions! While we have the utmost respect for those who want to start fresh with their fitness goals, the frustration of an overly crowded gym is something all regulars know way too well. Keep reading to see some hilarious January gym thoughts we have while trying to weed through all the newbies, and if you are new to the gym, check out these tips for making it less intimidating.

Why You Have a Nagging Night-Time Cough

You feel fine all day, but something happens when you tuck yourself into bed. A tickle in your throat leads to a nagging cough that only seems to happen at night, interfering with your sleep and leaving you irritable the next day. If you've ruled out the common cold or other respiratory infections, here are five common reasons you may be coughing at night.

  • Asthma: Most people equate asthma with the image of someone gasping for air. Although this can definitely be a symptom, most people with asthma commonly experience a dry cough. Make sure to talk to your doctor about getting tested for asthma to rule it out as the cause of your coughing.
  • Sinusitis: A chronic stuffy nose caused by allergies or a long-term sickness such as a sinus infection that won't go away could also be the culprit. When sinuses are clogged, the mucus can drip down the back of the throat (postnasal drip), causing that annoying tickle. If using a neti pot doesn't help, over-the-counter allergy meds or a prescription nasal spray could help clear your sinuses.
  • Acid reflux: Acid reflux disease, aka GERD, can also cause coughing. When lying down, the acid in your stomach, which causes indigestion and heartburn, can also wash into your lungs. If you think that GERD is the problem, try eating a smaller dinner earlier in the evening and prop your head up on a couple pillows when you sleep. If this doesn't help, there are also OTC medications that work wonders.
  • Iron deficiency: A diet lacking certain nutrients can also contribute to a chronic cough. If your body is low in iron, swelling and irritation in the back of your throat could be a symptom, which can lead to coughing. If this sounds familiar, then an iron supplement may be all you need.
  • Check your drugs: Meds, like ACE inhibitors prescribed for high blood pressure, can create the side effect of a dry cough. Talk to your pharmacist to see if your coughing could be caused by one of the medications you're on.

This Hack That Middle Eastern Women Do Will Change the Way You Apply Eyeliner

When it comes to applying eyeliner, the struggle is so real. Some have shaky hands, while others often tear up from product being applied very close to their eyes. If you fall into the latter category, Kim Kardahian's makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic has some solutions.

We were #blessed to learn from him at a special, editors-only master makeup class in NYC hosted by Jergens. First of all, he feels your pain.

"There's really nothing you can do about that, I hate when that happens," he said. "Like it starts tearing on the corner and then your eyeliner gets messed up. It's the worst."

Mario explained three techniques to try when you get weepy putting pencil near your waterline.

The Tissue Tip

He advises to grab a tissue for the process. "My best tip over the years is just to have a tissue wrapped about your finger and before it comes out, you lightly tap it," he explained.

The Breathing Technique

There is also a breathing technique you can try to keep the tears out all together. "Whenever you feel that tears are going to come out, there is a breathing technique you do," he noted. "You breathe in through your nose, and what happens is that you suck the tears in as opposed from them being able to come out. It's tricky, but you can get the hang of it when you start to practice it." Perhaps this is another reason to take up meditation in 2017.

The Bobby Pin Hack

The most interesting tidbit we learned comes from women overseas. "When I was in the Middle East, the Arab girls taught me a trick," he said. "You take a bobby pin and you clip it to your ear. And its painful but somehow that doesn't allow your tears to come out. I haven't tried that but apparently the girls in the Middle East, they do that."

Good luck and be safe!

What a Time to Be Alive: McDonald's Is Starting Delivery in 2017!

The hangover gods are shining down upon us: McDonald's will start testing out delivery service in January 2017. The fast-food chain plans to introduce the delivery option to nearly 200 restaurants in Orlando, Tampa, and Miami, according to USA Today. Those darn lucky Floridians . . .

Any Big Mac enthusiasts interested in ordering a juicy burger to their doorstep will simply have to order their meal through the UberEATS app or website. Then they can track the order's progress and delivery through the app until their precious cargo of hash browns and Egg McMuffins is delivered. You don't even have to step foot outside your house (or put pants on, for that matter) to enjoy the salty, greasy glory that is McDonald's french fries. What a time to be alive, ladies and gentlemen.

The restaurant will be deciding on future expansion to different cities outside of the Sunshine State after seeking feedback from Floridian customers. Our fingers are crossed! This exciting announcement comes after the fast-food chain revealed its plans to revamp its McCafé brand. Next year is shaping up to be quite the year for Mickey D's, and we can't contain our excitement.

What Is Bipolar Disorder and How Do I Know If My Kid Has It?

Could your child be suffering from bipolar disorder? Our friends at Fatherly break down mental health in kids and how to ensure they receive the best care going forward.

In general, children's mental health isn't treated the same way as physical health. If your kid falls out of a tree, you'd cart them off to the hospital to fix that broken leg (although, a small percentage will opt for them to "rub some dirt in it"). If kids get depressed, it's usually "chin up" and hope it's a phase.

Mental health problems are often thought of as something that happens to other people. But they're more common than we think. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans have mental health problems, and if these problem go untreated, it makes life a whole lot harder.

That's why Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein, psychologist and President of the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, wants parents to be proactive about their children's mental health. Because when you notice that there's something wrong, you can help - by getting them some help.

What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Also known commonly as manic depressive disorder, bipolar disorder is marked by severe mood changes; a person may jump from uncomfortably high bursts of energy to devastating pits of depression. How often the mood swings occur changes on a case-by-case basis (everyone's emotional regulation is different). Some periods can last as long as a few weeks or as short as a few hours. But, no matter the length of swings, all cases of bipolarism are serious because they deal with emotional instability.

How Do You Know If Your Kid Has It?

It can be tricky to see the onset of bipolarism, especially because it regularly starts to appear in teenagers and is often mistaken as being a teenager. Of course it's more than just teen angst or an infatuation with The Cure. If their moods are affecting how they function, then, per Borenstein "that should be a red flag."

Another flag: The dark times in a bipolar child's swings will be debilitating. "This is depression that is beyond the normal ups and downs of being a teenager," he says. "The person may actually think about and talk about harming themselves. They may be tearful on a regular basis."

Then, there's the manic phases. "They may have increased levels of energy. They may have unrealistic or grandiose ideas that they're going to have some extraordinary accomplishment beyond what we would consider a reasonable accomplishment." This isn't "the happy phase." Dr. Borenstein says these episodes can be downright scary. "It might manifest itself as fearful kinds of thoughts."

What to Look For in Younger Kids

A bipolar child will go through the aforementioned phases of manic excitement and horrible depression. There's a whole questionnaire that might tell you if your kid is bipolar. You may want to look at it if you've noticed any of the following in yours:

  • Changing sleep habits
  • Lowered grades
  • Increased irritability
  • Periods of depression and anxiety
  • Thoughts of self-harm
  • Manic periods with unrealistic ideas

Better to Be Safe Than Sorry

When your child's behavior changes, it's easy to think you're getting all Woody Allen about it. If you think something is wrong, then you're probably right. "Parents know their child," says Dr. Borenstein. "And if a parent has a concern about them, then they should look into it."

Even if you're worried you're blowing it out of proportion, you should still get help. "There are 2 scenarios," he says. "Either you go to a psychiatrist and find out your child is fine, or else you find out there is an issue and you do something about it before it's too late."

What Can You Do?

Be a collaborator. First, "you want to have a psychiatrist who has expertise in treating children," says Dr. Borenstein. Then parents need to trust that the psychiatrist can help. For your part, encourage your kid to be engaged in the treatment, which often includes talk therapy, monitoring, and medication that will balance their emotions.

And it's not just their mental health that needs to be watched. "Having a child with any condition is going to be a challenge for parents," he says. "First and foremost, make sure the child is getting the treatment they need. Then, parents should have some support for themselves." He recommends contacting NAMI, who support families that need help.

The Bottom Line

If you're worried, get it checked out. "If you saw your child walking with a limp, you'd go see a doctor," he says. "If you're seeing a change in your child, don't minimize it. Go see a doctor." As with a physical illness, mental illness that goes untreated can get worse and create serious problems down the road. Fortunately, you're on it, and your kid will thank you years down the road. Possibly with a Cure mixtape.

These Are All the Ways Alton Brown Makes (Perfect) Eggs

It's no secret that Alton Brown has amazing recipes. And when it comes to cooking eggs, he's your go-to source for mastering the perfect techniques for scrambled, poached, over easy - you name it. If you've long been searching for a comprehensive guide to all things eggs, consider this breakdown of how Alton Brown makes his eggs your ultimate cheat sheet. Which one are you most excited to try?

Scrambled: On a Warm Plate

There's a crucial step in Alton's scrambled eggs recipe that doesn't involve ingredients: serving the finished eggs on a warm plate. "Odds are you're going to be serving these on a plate. If so, I strongly suggest you park an ovensafe one in a low oven or in hot water while you're cooking. Cold plates suck the heat right out of food," Alton writes in the recipe.

Over Easy: Cracked in a Cup

It's all about the technique for perfect over-easy eggs, and Alton's how-to for eggs over easy will make sure you get it right every time. His most important tip is, "Never crack eggs directly into a pan - always crack them into a cup or ramekin. It's the only way to make sure they cook evenly, and you can pour them into the pan right where you want them."

Poached: With Vinegar

Alton Brown's poached eggs recipe includes a secret ingredient that many chefs swear by: white vinegar. The vinegar helps the egg whites form around the yolk and prevents them from running all over the place. Alton's other essential trick is to use the "whirlpool" method: use your spatula or spoon to stir the water in one direction until a whirlpool-like effect happens, and then drop your egg gently into the center of the moving water.

Omelet: For a Crowd

Perhaps one of the pioneers of the giant-food trend is Alton Brown's omelet for a crowd. Made by blending 10 eggs, water, salt, and herbs - yes, in a blender - this amplified omelet serves four people. Why waste time making four individual omelets when you could make one and slice it up while it's still warm?

Benedict: Totally Scratch Made

From the "foundation" bread to the hollandaise sauce, Alton Brown's eggs Benedict is truly homemade, and it's entirely worth the effort. Perfect for a Sunday project at home, this recipe takes more than 10 hours (you have to refrigerate the dough overnight) but allows you to skip the brunch lines and create a restaurant-quality breakfast in your own kitchen.

Quiche: As a Crepe

Is it a quiche or a crepe? You be the judge when you make Alton Brown's crepe quiche Lorraine cups. With a filling of traditional-style quiche Lorraine (bacon, cheddar, onion) and a thin crust made from crepe batter, this hybrid egg dish switches things up. The best part is you divvy up the mixture into a muffin tin for individual portions ideal for entertaining.

It will also include a special design project with Coach Executive Creative Director Stuart Vevers. When asked about the news, Coach was tight-lipped, telling POPSUGAR, "Coach has a longstanding policy that we do not comment on rumors and speculation."

The fashion buzz comes after Selena made an appearance at the AMAs, resurfacing after some much-needed time off. She also attended Coach's 75th anniversary event, where they threw a motel-themed party and pre-Fall '17 runway show. If Selena reps the brand, she'll be in good company: other Coach alums include Emma Roberts and Chloë Grace Moretz. Until then, read on for what we hope to see from Selena's Coach partnership and stay tuned to see if our predictions come true.

This Stylist Couldn't Find a Doll With Natural Hair For Her Daughters - So She Made One

It can be difficult for people of color to find dolls for their children that accurately represent them. Concerned mother, hairstylist, and reality star of Cutting It in the ATL, Mushiya Tshikuka decided to take this issue into her own hands. She created My Natural Doll, a line of natural-haired dolls for black girls.

Mushiya explained on Instagram how she searched for a toy that looked like her daughters. All she could find were either white dolls or light-skinned black dolls with straight hair. When her daughters continued to ask for toys of their own, she decided to create them herself.

The first doll in the line is named Keleshe ($195). She has a dark complexion, wears an African-print-inspired dress, and has kinky, curly hair. The doll also comes with a song, the lyrics of which reflect strength, empowerment, and confidence in her own hair texture and skin tone.

Mushiya explained the importance of the doll to her Instagram followers. "In a world where the dolls we play with and the role models we see shapes our perception of beauty and our self confidence, it is important that our little girls are constantly exposed to a reflection of themselves - beautiful dark skin and kinky hair like that which grows out of their own head."

It's so important to see more diverse representations of beauty emerge on the market, and My Natural Doll is inspiring. Hopefully toy retailers will take note and provide more options like this incredible doll to their clientele.

It Gets Easier

As with most things, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. To strengthen your muscles, acclimate your heart and lungs, and increase your endurance, run at least three times a week. Start off with a doable distance such as two miles. Once that distance feels good, gradually increase your mileage. The key is to move at a comfortable pace for a reasonable amount of time. If you do too much too soon, you could end up with an injury or a deep hatred for the sport.

You Don't Have to Wear Two Sports Bras

If you're well-endowed, running can be painful. I wore two sports bras for the longest time because I couldn't find one that prevented the uncomfortable bounce. A cheap cotton sports bra from Target just won't do. You might have to spend $50 or more, but it's worth it when you only have to wear one bra you trust.

Don't Skimp on Gear

For my first run, I picked up a $25 pair of sneaks and a pack of cheap cotton socks and wondered why I had screaming blisters. You don't need a ton of gear, but what you do need, you shouldn't skimp on. Spring for a trusty pair of well-fitting sneaks ($60-$120), a good pair of wicking socks ($10-$15), a super supportive sports bra ($30-$70), a seamless tank and long-sleeve to prevent chafing ($20-$40), and a lightweight pair of running shorts or tights to avoid wedgies ($20-$40). Technical gear specifically designed for running makes a huge difference and could make or break your new running career.

There Are Apps to Chart Your Run

I often drove running routes in my car to figure out mileage until my hubby introduced me to the wonderful world of iPhone running apps. The GPS not only keeps track of your distance, but it'll also chart your workout time, pace, calories burned, and elevation and give you a map of your run. Being able to track your workout might motivate you to keep going so you can beat your personal records.

Running Outside Is Harder Than the Treadmill

My power was out one morning - meaning no treadmill time for me - so I decided to run outside instead. It was so much harder! The real hills, the uneven terrain, the wind, the sun, the heat - it all makes running tougher than it already is. But I'll tell you, once I started running outside, I saw a huge improvement in my strength and endurance. I even lost the five extra pounds I could never quite shake, and my muscle definition was noticeable to others ("Damn, look at your calves!"). I know people are in love with their treadmills, but I wish someone suggested I run outside because the difficulty made me a better runner.

5 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before I Started Running

When I first got into running, I experienced everything from painful blisters to chafing to unsupported bosoms - no wonder I hated it. I wish someone had sat me down and told me these basic tips and tricks to help smooth my transition from nonrunner to runner. If you're just starting out on your own journey pounding the pavement or treadmill belt, here are things you should know about running.

Watch This Dad Surprise His Son With a Gigantic Star Wars Playhouse

When Colin Furze set out to build a Star Wars-inspired playhouse for his son, he certainly aimed high. See, Colin is known for his over-the-top inventions. In fact, he currently has more than 3 million YouTube subscribers who tune in to see his many experiments. So, when he decided to build the playhouse, he scaled it so that it would be about the height of an actual house, naturally.

After a month of working on it with his friends, Colin finally revealed the playhouse and it's seriously impressive. The playhouse is an exact replica of the franchise's classic AT-AT Walker, except this one towers over the neighboring homes. A ladder descends at the press of a button, and inside, the playhouse is stocked with games and memorabilia, all provided by eBay.

The best part of the video, however, is seeing his son's expression as he ascends the ladder into the game room. Watch the full video above, then learn more about how Colin actually built the AT-AT.

Amy Schumer's Latest Response to Fat Shamers Will Have You Beaming With Self-Love and Pride

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Amy Schumer was in talks to star in the upcoming Barbie movie, and along with many other times in her career, the actress was immediately fat shamed and trolled for her appearance. Now, she's opening up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show about what she's learned from being trolled based on her appearance, and she's firing back at the haters with a powerful message of self-love.

Amy explained that after being in the spotlight for so long and hearing such horrendous, degrading things about her appearance, "You build up a thicker skin from it and then you're like, 'wait a minute, no.'"

"I look in the mirror and I know who I am and I feel beautiful and I feel strong and sexy," she said, evoking a huge applause from the audience. "And the people online trolling [me] are in more pain that we can possibly imagine. For women of all ages there's no one too young or too old to understand. It never stops and it really has to be about knowing who you are . . . and every day I look in the mirror and I'm like, 'I can work with this b*tch,'" she added.

Preach!

This is exactly what we need to hear from women in the entertainment industry, and Amy is doing an amazing job at spreading her message of fearless confidence.

Check out Amy on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday, Dec. 12, and then, see how she responded to the horrible Barbie haters last week with this mic-dropping moment.

The Color You Should Wear More of in 2017 Isn't Black, but It's Pretty Damn Close

For most fashion girls, a head-to-toe black outfit is a sacred look because you always look good and it's easy to put together. With the new year quickly approaching, however, we're challenging ourselves (and you) to make some tiny style changes, starting with: wear a little less black and a little more navy. You're probably thinking, "Navy? That's random," but if you've been paying attention to street style photos, you know it's a shade It girls have always worn. Navy works as a base with everything from bold prints to bright colors and even pairs well with edgier pieces like leather.

In fact, the street style shots ahead prove the neutral tone is as versatile and easy to coordinate outfits with as black. We even had to squint a few times at our screen to tell the dark hues apart. Although black will always be a safe and classic color, do give it a rest and give navy a chance in 2017. You may even realize there are navy items hanging in your closet already. But if there aren't, we have it taken care of with some shopping ahead plus some tips on how to style the color.

Women Wore the Sh*t Out of These Sneakers in 2016

This year saw plenty of sneaker trends. Maybe that's because women are more readily incorporating flats into their fancy wardrobes, pairing slips with Stan Smiths and tiered gowns with Supergas. That's one way to toughen up a feminine look, but it also allows for maximum comfort. We've got a feeling sneakers will stay as relevant in 2017 as they are now. With that in mind, we did a little digging and uncovered the most-searched-for styles of the year.

Using the data straight from the experts at our sister site ShopStyle, we curated a definitive list of the slip-ons, high-tops, and trainers that girls went hunting for. As you might expect, Nike and Adidas designs surfaced plenty of times, but there are lots of designer platforms and trainers that went "viral" too. Read on to see where your favorite sneakers fall into place, and go shopping for the ones you love.

Kylie Jenner Wants You to Read These Rules Before Entering Her Pop-Up Shop

Kylie Jenner's pop-up shop has only been open since Dec. 9, but fans from all around the world have been excitedly mobbing the Topanga Westfield Mall to snap up a memento from the star's store (and, of course, to see that incredible wall of Lip Kits).

If you haven't been able to make it out to California, you might not know about the strict rules of the "Kylie Cosmetics experience." The team at Racked divulged the exhaustive list.

As you can see, there is to be no sitting in line as you wait to get inside. This seems like a reasonable request until you realize that some fans wait up to 10 hours for their moment in the Kylie pop-up shop. That blissful moment, by the way, is limited to a brief 20 minutes, during which you can only purchase up to three of each item. Did you want to buy an additional product after your 20 minutes have passed? Too freakin' bad: you'll have to go to the back of the line and start over.

But perhaps the most discomfiting aspect of the experience is saved for last. Racked shared that there are also no prices listed anywhere in the store, so you have no idea what you'll be spending until you get to the register. Unless you have a Kylie-sized bank account, that could get a little uncomfortable . . . we think we'll stick with shopping her online store for now!

These Makeup-Free Celebrity Selfies Will Inspire You to Bare It All

And before you jump in saying they have the best skincare at their fingertips, consider this: when some of us have a hard time leaving the comfort of the couch without mascara or at least a little tinted moisturizer, these celebs, whose looks are scrutinized by the world daily, broke the mold to join the fresh-faced movement by sharing their own makeup-free photos on social media. See their gorgeous snaps and get inspired to let loose, too.

Shay Mitchell on Gray Hair: "I Call Them Wisdom Hairs"

Though Pretty Little Liars may have come to an end, Shay Mitchell doesn't look like she's slowing down anytime soon. She's recently launched seven eye shadow palettes with Smashbox, designed her own jewelry line, and always looks effortlessly gorgeous and relatable in interviews. The 29-year-old star even admitted to getting a couple of gray hairs in an interview with People.

"I've definitely found a gray hair, probably like five of them," she told the magazine. "I call them wisdom hairs - more wisdom, great!"

The actress doesn't seem to mind the reminder that she's getting older; it's not a big deal. "I am getting older . . . I am happy. You know what that means? I have more experiences. You can't freak out about [gray hairs]. Plus if you don't like it, then dye your hair - no problem." She went on to reveal that personally, she plucks the gray hairs she finds straight out of her head. (Same, Shay, same.)

Her secret to her lustrous locks is surprisingly simple: coconut oil. "My mom was raised in the Philippines and that was her secret for beautiful hair, beautiful skin, that natural glow. So I like to use that in my hair and it really does work," she explained.

Shay's stance on aging is refreshing, and it's nice to hear that she just tries to enjoy her beauty routine: "My beauty philosophy is to have fun and not take it too seriously."
