The Pull-Up Guide - It's Not as Scary as You Think!
Despite what you might think, pull-ups are not impossible and can be adjusted for any fitness level. This infamous exercise offers a great upper-body workout that quickly tones the back, arms, and chest. Not only will it make you stronger, but conquering this move will also give an extra boost of confidence and help you feel like you can tackle anything - because, let's face it, you can.
Beginner Pull-Ups
- Assisted Pull-Up Machine: The pull-up machine is a great way to try your first go at pull-ups. The machine uses counterbalance weights, which means the higher the weight you set the machine, the easier the exercise becomes. Start by setting the weight to 20 pounds less than your weight, complete three to five reps, and then adjust the weight accordingly. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to use the assisted pull-up machine at your gym.
- Band Pull-Up: With the help of a superband - a giant, two-inch-thick rubber band - you can tackle consecutive pull-ups. All you have to do is wrap the rubber band securely around the pull-up bar, put it under one knee (or one foot for even more assistance), grab onto the bar (stepping off a stool if needed to reach), and begin your pull-up. Superbands are the same length, but the wider the band, the more assistance. Eventually, you will no longer be a "groupie" to the band and will be able to use your body weight!
Intermediate Pull-Ups
- Jump Pull-Ups: Consider jump pull-ups (pull-ups with a jump start) the next level after the assisted pull-up machine. Standing under the bar, jump up to grab the bar, harnessing the momentum of the jump to pull your body and chin to the bar. If your chin doesn't come close to the bar, don't give up - this move often takes practice.
Advanced Pull-Ups
- Traditional Body Weight Pull-Ups: Using your body weight is the most traditional, but often the most challenging, way to complete a pull-up. With palms facing away from you, grip a pull-up bar with arms extended. Keeping your core tight while engaging your back and lats, bring yourself up until your chin passes above the bar, then lower yourself down into the starting position. The trick (and challenge) to any pull-up is to avoid swinging your entire body or using your neck for added momentum.
- Weighted Pull-Up: When you're ready, let your inner gymnast shine. Following the movements for a traditional pull-up, add a weighted plate for an extra challenge. Using a weight belt or simply holding a weight between your knees, you will be the star of the gym and any workout.

Toss the Turkey Bacon and Just Eat the Real Thing - It's Better For You, Really!
If you have to take a second look at that title, it's totally understandable. Many people tend to think that turkey bacon is much healthier than regular pork bacon, but is it really? I mean, just compare the pan from cooking turkey bacon with cooking pork bacon. Pork bacon leaves behind so much fat. How on earth could it be so much healthier for you? Let's find out.
Why Turkey Bacon Isn't the Healthiest Choice
Overall, the average slice of turkey bacon has fewer calories, so you might automatically assume that would make it the healthier alternative to pork bacon. According to Keisha Luke, a Toronto-based culinary nutritionist, "Turkey bacon doesn't offer much when it comes to nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, it's lower in protein than pork bacon, and the calories it contains are mainly from fat they add during processing because turkey does not contain a lot of fat itself."
Turkey bacon is also a highly processed food. The process of making turkey bacon is what causes it to be so unhealthy. First, they grind bits of white meat and dark meat together, add in some seasonings to mimic the taste of pork bacon, throw in some chemicals and preservatives, then reform and color the "meat" to make it resemble a strip of real bacon.
Nitrites and nitrates are also added to the mix, which is also one of the main reasons that it is simply no good because they metabolize in the body and result in nitrosamines, which are known cancer-causing carcinogens. That's why it's best to eat food in its original and unprocessed form.
Why Pork Bacon Is the Better Choice
If you must get your bacon fix, pork is going to be the better of the two. That's because, according to Luke, "even though it's not the leanest cut of pork, bacon that is still in its natural and unprocessed state (as long as you buy uncured organic, which contains no nitrates or nitrites) is always better than a manmade substitute." Here are four major reasons real bacon beats turkey bacon.
- Packed With Protein
The protein content in bacon is very beneficial to your body in many ways. It's a complete protein that has all nine of the essential amino acids needed by your body to do awesome stuff like build muscle! The protein to fat ratio in pork bacon is 4:1, which is the highest among any other meat on the planet. - Contains Healthy Fats
Most people tend to think that fat makes you fat, clogs your arteries, and more, but that's just not the case. In fact, the saturated fat found in bacon plays a key role in heart health, brain health, protection of the liver from toxins such as alcohol, and much more. A large portion of your brain is made up from saturated fat, and by limiting the intake of these fats, you're robbing your brain of materials that it needs to function properly. - Protection For the Heart
Bacon contains omega-3 fatty acids that are essential, meaning our bodies cannot manufacture them so we need to get them from our diets. These fatty acids reduce cholesterol levels and protect the heart. - High Vitamin and Mineral Content
A serving of bacon will provide you with 65 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin B1 (thiamin) and 47 percent of vitamin B3 (niacin). It also contains B12, zinc, riboflavin, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, and pantothenate. That's a lot of good nutrients in a strip!
By no means are we saying that bacon should be a staple to your healthy diet or that you should fry up a slab of pork every morning, but we're also not saying you should avoid it. In fact, there are benefits to real pork bacon that far outweigh the turkey variety. So grab yourself a couple of slices and enjoy some of the real stuff you love - no need to fake it, just don't go for seconds.

Could This Theory Explain Why Dementors Are So Drawn to Harry Potter?
Throughout Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry is consistently pestered by the deathly cloaked guardians of the wizard prison: dementors. After his first few encounters with dementors cause Harry to black out and recall the sound of his mother's murder, he asks his favorite teacher (and arguably the best character in the series), Remus Lupin) why his reactions to the dementors are so strong.
Professor Lupin explains that Harry has more dark moments in his past than most people, so there is more pain for the dementors to drudge up. However, there's also another explanation for why the soul-sucking prison guardians can't seem to get enough of Harry. One Redditor laid it all out in a supershort theory that makes so much sense, it's ridiculous.
[Harry Potter] The reason Dementors are so interested in Harry is because he has 1.125 of a soul from FanTheories
Because dementors seek to suck out the souls of their prisoners, it's plausible that they are especially drawn to Harry because - as it is revealed in the last book - he actually possesses a fragment of Lord Voldemort's soul as well. When Voldemort accidentally created a horcrux out of Harry, further splitting his soul, he unintentionally implanted a bit of himself into his infant nemesis. Therefore, until he comes back to life at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry possesses not one soul, but one and one-eighth, rendering him all the more alluring to the dementors.
Do you agree with this theory? Let us know your favorite idea about Harry Potter that isn't (officially) canon in the comments!

After Giving Birth to Preemie Triplets, This Mom Is Opening Up About the Emotional NICU Experience
Kayla Richardson gave birth to beautiful triplet baby girls at just 24 weeks and six days, and her emotional Instagram feed is reminding all of us to cherish even the tiniest milestones. Since being born on Sept. 10, Kayla's three girls have spent the last few months in the NICU, and on Nov. 5, she was finally able to hold Olivia, Shiloh, and Sanaa at the same time.
"I'm so thankful their nurse Holly offered to let me hold all of them tonight, it was such an amazing feeling," she wrote alongside the adorable photo. "Holding all of them at the same time made the reality of me now having three babies sink in even further 😂 I know it's going to be stressful at times but I've grown to see these girls as the blessing that they are & I know I'll be thanking God countless times throughout my life for blessing me with these three beautiful, healthy, & outstanding girls."
According to The Huffington Post, Kayla spent two weeks in the hospital after her water broke at just 22 weeks, and then had a C-section because of her high risk pregnancy. She said that when she was in the hospital she turned to Instagram to read stories from preemie parents and get through her darkest days.
"Being in the hospital, I was very bored, lonely, and afraid," Kayla said about why she turned to social media. "Some of it was scary and hard to look at, but it showed the reality of what my daughters and I could be faced with."
After her triplets were born, she decided to create the Instagram account to document her emotional journey in the NICU and post about important milestones in her babies' lives. Kayla's powerful captions are so honest that we can't stop refreshing her page to see Olivia, Shiloh, and Sanaa get stronger every single day.

Follow These 7 Steps to Erase All Your Data Before Selling Your MacBook
Thinking about buying the flashy new MacBook Pro and getting rid of your old laptop? Don't sell or give it away without first following these tips.
- Back up your Mac. Use either iCloud or an external hard drive to store any files you want to keep.
- Sign out of your iTunes account by going to iTunes > Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer.
- Don't just delete your texts or photos; sign out of iCloud instead. To sign out, go to System Preferences > iCloud > Sign Out.
- Sign out of iMessage so that you don't miss any texts. Go to Preferences > Accounts and then click the "Sign out" option.
- Finally, delete everything off your Mac and then reinstall the OS X system. To do this, restart your computer. As it boots up, hold the Command key and R key. You'll be taken to MacOS Utilities, where you should select Disk Utility. When you see your hard drive, select it, and then go to the "Erase" tab. Here, select "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)" > Erase.
- Now, reinstall the OS X system. This should be an option after you erase your hard drive and exit Disk Utility. The window will show several options, but select the "Reinstall macOS" one. However, if you have an older Mac, you will need to reinstall the OS X system with the original CD that the computer came with.
- Turn off your laptop once the OS system is done installing. To do so, hold both the Command and Q keys and then choose "Shut Down."
Once you've done all of this, your laptop shouldn't have any of your personal data on it anymore. Give it away or recycle it with Apple and get a gift card.

These Bath Bomb Tattoos Prove That Lush Is a Lifelong Obsession
Anyone who has tried one of Lush's effervescent, aromatic bath bombs knows how incredibly addictive they can be. Similarly, many people with tattoos report that after getting their first ink, they become preoccupied with acquiring more and more designs on their bodies. Now a group of Lush employees (known as Lushies!) in the Lancaster, PA, area are combining the two obsessions with magical results.
Lushie Brittney Minor and eight members of her "Lush family" all decided to permanently declare their love for their employer. "One shift, we were talking about how much the brand has had an impact on us," she explained. "I mentioned I wanted to get a tattoo to celebrate, and they all jumped at the idea." A tattoo artist friend of Brittney's agreed to ink them all.
The crew opted to get a wide range of Lush-themed masterpieces, including the brand's "fighting animal testing" symbol, sprigs of lavender, and, of course, bath bombs. Brittney shared the finished works in one of Lush's private Facebook groups and received major support from other employees. "I was overwhelmed by the 'likes' and comments from Lushies across North America saying how they now want to get Lush tattoos, too," she said.
Not only are we dying to get an inside look at that private Lush group, but we're pretty positive that this group of nine Lushies aren't the first to get tattoos inspired by the brand - and we want to see them all! Read on to see all the awesome ink, but don't be surprised if it inspires a Lush shopping spree, inking sesh, or both.

Olympic Gymnast Gabby Douglas Stands Up to Cyberbullying in a Special Way
Gabby Douglas has had enough of cyberbullies. The 20-year-old Olympic gymnastic recently teamed up with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation to spread the importance of standing up to online harassment. Gabby experienced her own share of online bullying during the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games when she was criticized for her hair and accused of being unpatriotic because she didn't put her hand over her heart when "The Star-Spangled Banner" was sung.
"I started googling myself, which I probably shouldn't have done," Douglas recalled during an interview with Good Morning America, which aired on Dec. 16. "I was caught off guard," she said about the barrage of negative comments about her. "I was like, 'Wait, what's going on?' I definitely felt like the world was definitely against me," Douglas revealed.
Douglas received an outpouring of support from across the world when Saturday Night Live comedian Leslie Jones created the viral hashtag #LOVE4GABBYUSA to show support for the inspiring gymnast. "Even though it may seem the world's against you . . . I'm here today to tell you that's not the case," Douglas shared for anyone who is dealing with cyberbullying.
"I am encouraging everyone to take a pledge," she said as a part of her joint effort with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation to combat cyberbullies. "It's pretty simple. You take the pledge and you don't be mean online anymore."
Douglas also called on parents to do their part to prevent online bullying. "It starts at home," she stated. "If you're a good example to your kid, your kid's going to follow that example. If the kid sees you nasty, he/she's going to take over that role." Inspiring, indeed!

Douglas also called on parents to do their part to prevent online bullying. "It starts at home," she stated. "If you're a good example to your kid, your kid's going to follow that example. If the kid sees you nasty, he/she's going to take over that role." Inspiring, indeed!
How to Safely Remove a Tick From Your Pet
Ticks look like this creature - they're tiny black, brown, or reddish eight-legged insects about the size of a pinhead. However, when they attach themselves to your pet, they can swell up several times their original size. The common tick can transmit fatal illnesses like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease, and Summer is the time of year to really check your pet to prevent sickness in your furry friend.
Before heading outdoors, there are a few ways you can try to repel ticks from your pup.
- Make your own dog-safe tick repellent with ingredients you already have in your pantry and spritz on your pup before heading out for long hikes.
- On-staff Trupanion veterinarian Dr. Sarah Nold suggests an oral or topical tick repellent from your vet, some of which also act as a flea prevention.
- Another option is a Preventic collar, according to Dr. Eva Radke, veterinarian at East San Rafael Veterinary Clinic in California.
- Be aware of the environment outside where you're taking your pet. Make sure to cut your grass and remove brush.
Unfortunately, even preventative measures aren't a sure thing. If you do find a tick on your dog, don't panic! Here's what Dr. Nold and Dr. Radke recommend you do.
- It's important to avoid direct contact with the tick and contaminated skin. Diseases can be transmitted from tick to pet to human, so make sure you wear latex gloves.
- Place your pet somewhere where you can get a good grip and he stays as comfy as possible. It helps to have another set of hands to hold or distract him.
- Try to ID the head or mouth parts of the tick - you'll want to grasp it with tweezers or a Tick Twister as close to your pet's skin as possible. If you grasp it by the body, it can get crushed and force harmful bacteria into your pet's bloodstream.
- Pull the tick out using a straight, steady pulling motion. It's important to be slow and gentle so its head will not remain lodged in your pet's skin (which can lead to inflammation and secondary infection).
- Place the tick in a cup and poor rubbing alcohol on it to be sure to kill it.
- Apply rubbing alcohol to the skin where the tick bit your pet, followed by an antibacterial lotion.
- Keep in mind if you find one tick, you should check your pet thoroughly for additional ticks.
- Throw away your gloves and sterilize the tweezers, too.
- Now give your pet a treat - he's been through a lot!
The Horrifying Way Improperly Removing Acrylics Can Harm Your Nails
If you have chronically short nails, it's tempting to get long and stylish acrylics. Beauty blogger Amelia Perrin has a serious acrylic-nail addiction and frequently posts photos of her lengthy artificial talons on Instagram. She gets many compliments on her claws, but wanted to warn people of the negative side effects.
On Twitter, Amelia revealed what happened when she ripped off her acrylics with a painful-looking photo. In another tweet, Amelia said that even the hot water in the shower was painful on her sensitive nails.
Professional manicurist and Gelish Educator Danielle Candido has some good news for beauty junkies that just can't kick the habit. "You can continuously wear acrylic without damaging your nails – the potential for it damaging your nails depends a lot on the quality of the product and the training of the nail tech," Candido explained via email. She also warned against using any product containing Methyl Methacrylate (MMA), an illegal monomer liquid which severely damages the nail (but sometimes shows up at discount salons because it is inexpensive).
Another way to protect your natural nail is to make sure your tech doesn't overfile your nail prior to application; you'll know it's being overfiled if you feel any soreness or pain. Most importantly, never rip off your acrylic nails. "It literally pulls pieces of the nail off with it if you remove [them] improperly," explained Candido.
To make sure your digits stay healthy while wearing acrylics, Candido suggests using cuticle oil daily, twice a day. If your nails are already damaged, use nail treatments to nourish your nails, like the Morgan Taylor Go Ahead and Grow Treatment Base Coat ($6), and give your natural nails a break from the damage.
Read on to see the damage that results from removing acrylic nails at home.

7 Ways to Boost the Protein in Your Oatmeal
Whether you're craving a warm bowl of steel-cut oatmeal or a mason jar of cold overnight oats, oatmeal itself doesn't offer tons of protein. A half-cup serving has about seven grams, which isn't enough if you're looking to stay full all morning long.
To get your breakfast up to the recommended amount of protein for weight loss, which is 13 to 20 grams, try one or a combination of these:
- Mash in beans: Mash one-quarter cup of chickpeas into your bowl and for 65 extra calories, you also get 3.5 grams of protein. Try this creamy banana cashew (chickpea) overnight oatmeal that offers a total of 15 grams of protein.
- Add protein powder: Sprinkle in a quarter-scoop of protein powder to boost the protein - Vega Sport will offer 7.5 grams of plant-based, easy-to-digest protein.
- Cook yours with milk: Silk Light Vanilla Soymilk is sweetened with stevia so it has half the sugar of cow's milk, and offers 6 grams of protein. It's also sweet enough on its own, so you won't have to add maple syrup, brown sugar, or honey. To up the protein content even more, go for a dairy-based milk, which has eight grams of protein per serving.
- Stir in nut butter: One tablespoon of peanut butter adds four grams of protein and a wonderfully creamy texture.
- Mix in Greek or soy yogurt: After your oatmeal is cooked, adding half a cup of yogurt will make it creamier and higher in protein.
- Add eggs: If you re into savory breakfast, add raw egg to your oatmeal while it's cooking, or add already cooked eggs or egg whites to your cooked oatmeal. One large egg adds 6.3 grams of protein.
- Add seeds and nuts: One tablespoon of hemp hearts adds 3.3 grams of protein, and a one tablespoon serving of chia seeds adds two grams. If you're into nuts, chop up 12 kernels for an extra three grams.

Here's What's on the Menu at the Infamous Trump Grill
The full-on feud that's currently surrounding Trump Grill just might be more intense than the presidential debates earlier this year. It all started when Vanity Fair published a story titled "Trump Grill Could Be the Worst Restaurant in America," in which writer Tina Nguyen candidly reviewed the restaurant in the lobby of Donald Trump's Fifth Avenue tower. Nguyen certainly didn't hold back her true feelings, stating that the dumplings contained "flaccid, gray innards" and her overcooked steak was practically "crying out for A1 sauce."
Naturally, the president-elect caught wind of the article, and a Twitter war between Vanity Fair and Trump ensued. In response to the exposé, Trump tweeted, "Has anyone looked at the really poor numbers of Vanity Fair Magazine. Way down, big trouble, dead!"
With all the buzz surrounding the restaurant, we couldn't help but wonder what some of these Trump Grill menu items look like in real life. Ahead, we have a peek at some of the dishes offered, straight from some of the establishment's latest patrons.

For regular gym goers, January is the most dreaded time of the year. Why You Have a Nagging Night-Time Cough
You feel fine all day, but something happens when you tuck yourself into bed. A tickle in your throat leads to a nagging cough that only seems to happen at night, interfering with your sleep and leaving you irritable the next day. If you've ruled out the common cold or other respiratory infections, here are five common reasons you may be coughing at night.
Before You Buy Honey, Read This
- Asthma: Most people equate asthma with the image of someone gasping for air. Although this can definitely be a symptom, most people with asthma commonly experience a dry cough. Make sure to talk to your doctor about getting tested for asthma to rule it out as the cause of your coughing.
- Sinusitis: A chronic stuffy nose caused by allergies or a long-term sickness such as a sinus infection that won't go away could also be the culprit. When sinuses are clogged, the mucus can drip down the back of the throat (postnasal drip), causing that annoying tickle. If using a neti pot doesn't help, over-the-counter allergy meds or a prescription nasal spray could help clear your sinuses.
- Acid reflux: Acid reflux disease, aka GERD, can also cause coughing. When lying down, the acid in your stomach, which causes indigestion and heartburn, can also wash into your lungs. If you think that GERD is the problem, try eating a smaller dinner earlier in the evening and prop your head up on a couple pillows when you sleep. If this doesn't help, there are also OTC medications that work wonders.
- Iron deficiency: A diet lacking certain nutrients can also contribute to a chronic cough. If your body is low in iron, swelling and irritation in the back of your throat could be a symptom, which can lead to coughing. If this sounds familiar, then an iron supplement may be all you need.
- Check your drugs: Meds, like ACE inhibitors prescribed for high blood pressure, can create the side effect of a dry cough. Talk to your pharmacist to see if your coughing could be caused by one of the medications you're on.

This Hack That Middle Eastern Women Do Will Change the Way You Apply Eyeliner
When it comes to applying eyeliner, the struggle is so real. Some have shaky hands, while others often tear up from product being applied very close to their eyes. If you fall into the latter category, Kim Kardahian's makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic has some solutions.
We were #blessed to learn from him at a special, editors-only master makeup class in NYC hosted by Jergens. First of all, he feels your pain.
"There's really nothing you can do about that, I hate when that happens," he said. "Like it starts tearing on the corner and then your eyeliner gets messed up. It's the worst."
Mario explained three techniques to try when you get weepy putting pencil near your waterline.
The Tissue Tip
He advises to grab a tissue for the process. "My best tip over the years is just to have a tissue wrapped about your finger and before it comes out, you lightly tap it," he explained.
The Breathing Technique
There is also a breathing technique you can try to keep the tears out all together. "Whenever you feel that tears are going to come out, there is a breathing technique you do," he noted. "You breathe in through your nose, and what happens is that you suck the tears in as opposed from them being able to come out. It's tricky, but you can get the hang of it when you start to practice it." Perhaps this is another reason to take up meditation in 2017.
The Bobby Pin Hack
The most interesting tidbit we learned comes from women overseas. "When I was in the Middle East, the Arab girls taught me a trick," he said. "You take a bobby pin and you clip it to your ear. And its painful but somehow that doesn't allow your tears to come out. I haven't tried that but apparently the girls in the Middle East, they do that."
Good luck and be safe!
