This Video of Kids Choosing Between Gifts For Themselves or Their Parents Will Have You Bawling
'Tis the season of giving and receiving - a reciprocation we've come to expect each year. While it's easy to forget that the holidays are about others when we have our own growing wish lists, this video by UPtv reminds us exactly what this time of year's really all about. Kids from Metro Atlanta Boys & Girls Clubs - 83 percent of whom come from low-income families, many of whom "aren't able to afford even a Christmas tree" - were asked to make the most torturous decision a child of that age has probably ever had to make.
When asked what they were hoping to get for Christmas, the responses were unsurprising: a Barbie house, XBOX 360, etc. And then they were asked what they thought their parents would want. Not only were the kids presented with exactly what they asked for, but they were also handed the same gifts their parents wished for. However, each child had to make the decision of keeping only one, and as you'll see in the video above, most of them were willing to give up their toys and electronics for their parents. When asked why, they had the most touching responses:
"Because Legos don't matter - your family matters. So it's either family or Legos and I choose family.""If I get a laptop, my mom will lose something. She helps me when I'm sick, she helps me with my homework."
"They look out for me and do stuff for me so I need to give back to them."
Luckily, those who chose to give up their own presents were able to go home with both, which brought tears to their eyes, their parents's eyes, and ours. What's even more hard hitting is the reply to a comment one user left asking, "How many kids didn't make the video because they picked their own gift?" UPtv replied, "Around 80 percent of kids picked the gift for their family."
If your holiday spirit isn't fully restored by now, we're not sure what will do it. Watch "The Other Christmas Gift" for yourself and prepare to bawl your eyes out. Happy holidays!
11 DIY Beauty Remedies Your Grandma Always Talked About That Actually Work
Every abuela has one: that wild concoction she whips up from ingredients in her kitchen and swears by every time you have a pimple, dry skin, unruly hair - you name it. As kids, most of us rolled our eyes and went along with it, but we've done a little digging, and it turns out maybe Grandma wasn't so crazy after all. Many of those beauty recipes actually work! Warning: do try these 11 practices at home for smooth skin and silky hair - or get these beauty buys that are also grandma-approved.
1. Using mayonnaise as a deep conditioner for healthy hair.
According to hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins, this old-school method works because of the fat to protein ratio. "The oil softens the hair, making it shinier - and the protein in the eggs will make strands stronger." He recommends applying the treatment to dry hair, and leaving it on as a mask for 15-20 minutes. Shampoo twice, and condition afterwards. But, Hawkins notes, this treatment works best for hair that isn't fine or limp.
2. Dabbing nails in olive oil for a healthier look.
Nail expert Stephanie Stone debunked the myth (common in Dominican culture) that rubbing garlic on nails will make them strong (according to studies, it has no benefit). But, she says, applying olive oil (a popular DIY beauty ingredient in Puerto Rico) on nails and cuticles throughout the day is a great way to improve their health. "Keeping your hands and nails moisturized is key, especially if you're trying to repair damaged nail beds. I'd also recommend applying it lightly throughout the day instead of a full on soak. But consistency is key!"
3. Coconut oil as a body moisturizer.
"This one 100% works," says dermatologist (and Sofia Vergara's derm!) Dendy Engelman, M.D., of coconut oil for soft skin, a popular technique in many Latin American countries. "Coconut oil is mostly made up of saturated fats and medium-chain fatty acids, which help repair the skin barrier, trap water to hydrate skin, and also reduce inflammation. And recent studies show it's also a great treatment for eczema."
4. Adding honey to hair conditioner for softer tresses.
A custom common in Caribbean Latin America, honey is a natural moisturizer, which Hawkins says does work to help rehydrate your locks. And using unprocessed honey will give you an extra bonus: it's full of enzymes that will help create a healthy scalp and prevent dandruff.
5. Agua maravilla to fight blemishes.
Also known as witch hazel, this is common in many Latino families, especially from Puerto Rican and Dominican backgrounds. Engelman says it works because the mixture contains anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antibacterial properties. Engelman also recommends Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel Refreshingly Clean Towelettes ($6) to control blemishes and calm bug bites.
6. Washing hair with Coca-Cola for shine.
This is a long-time favorite technique among not just Latino families, but celebrities like Suki Waterhouse. Hairstylist Nunzio Saviano gives this traditional trick the thumbs up: "The acidity closes the hair cuticle, which makes it look healthy and shiny. But be careful: the sugar can leave your hair sticky, so you might need to rinse it out quickly. Apple cider vinegar is an alternative that might not be as messy!"
7. Beach sand as a skin exfoliant.
"Sand is essentially finely granulated rocks, so it's perfect to remove excess dry skin cells," Engelman says. "But because it's so abrasive, I'd only recommend you use it to exfoliate feet. It might be too harsh for other parts of your body."
8. Manzanilla grisi shampoo to lighten hair.
Saviano says that this traditionally Mexican and South American product - which contains Flor de Manzanilla and claims to both wash and lighten hair - does work, but he would use it sparingly. "This will maintain your tone and even lighten it at times, but if you use it too much, your color might become dull or even fade."
9. Grape skin paste for glowing skin.
Grapes are a gold mine, says Engelman. "They'll have a brightening effect over time because they contain vitamins B6, C, and A, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, selenium, and flavonoids, which act as antioxidants and remove toxins from the skin."
10. Sugar and lemon juice as an antiaging exfoliant.
According to Engelman, the sugar crystals act as an exfoliator, sloughing away dead skin, while the lemon juice helps peel away dead skin cells because of their content of alpha hydroxy acid (which is found in many antiaging treatments). Exfoliating is important, Engelman says, "because as we age, our skin doesn't shed as effectively. Plus, getting rid of dead cells helps your moisturizers penetrate better."
11. Avocado for healthy cuticles.
"Actually, rubbing avocado oil on cuticles is more effective than actual avocado," says Stone. But good news for avocado lovers: "Avocados in a healthy, balanced diet will help you see overall improvement in your hair, skin, and nails, too." Bring on the guacamole!

What It's Really Like to Have Dinner at Hogwarts's Great Hall
Since Warner Bros. Studio in London first introduced its special holiday dinner last year, we've been trying to save all our galleons to attend. One woman's recent retelling of the dinner is proving it's worth every penny - or $350, to be exact.
Imgur user Destiny Blue recently shared an impressive amount of pictures and details from her magical night, which included dinner at the Hogwarts Great Hall, a stroll through Diagon Alley, a brief battle with some Death Eaters, and more! Overall, it seemed like an incredible event with a startling attention to detail - surely a necessary factor for many of the hardcore Harry Potter fans in attendance. Her only complaint? The food left something to be desired, however, everything else definitely made up for it.

Elf on a Shelf Eyeliner Art Exists and You Need to Try It For Your Next Holiday Affair
We've already tried candy cane and Tiffany & Co bow-inspired eyeliner art ideas, and makeup guru Meghan Rusk is giving us new inspiration on Instagram. Via her handle phunky_town, Meghan is showing off some serious drawing skills. She has used makeup to create unique Winter and holiday motifs on her eyelids, including snowflakes, bells, bows, and - our favorite - an Elf on a Shelf!
"I love creating liner looks, and the holiday season is my favorite time of the year," Meghan told POPSUGAR via email. "I leave the decorating around the house until last minute to avoid my pets from tearing them down, which bums me out. I decided I would combine my passion for makeup and the love of the holiday season to create fun looks to make up for the lack of holiday decorations around my home."
Obviously we needed to know more specifics about the Elf on a Shelf look. "My family never took part in the Elf on the Shelf activities," she said. "I didn't know what it was until a few years ago when my friends, who have children, posted daily updates on the 'trouble' the Elf has caused around their home. I figured it would be a fun way to spice up a liner look for the holiday season."
Good news is, Meghan says you can totally try these ideas at home! "One tip I have for people who want to try creative liner at home is to keep practicing and be patient!" she said. "There are days where I have to redo my makeup four times to get it right! You will be frustrated at times and want to give up, but don't. Once you nail it, you will be so happy that your hard work paid off." Well, hers certainly did!

Emma Stone's Yellow Dress Will Give You 1 More Reason to See La La Land
La La Land took home best picture at the Critics' Choice Awards, but if you need another special reason to see the film, perhaps this style tidbit will do: Emma Stone's signature dancing dress was selected for a reason. Emma plays Mia in the movie, and though she partakes in plenty of dancing acts, the one set in front of a lit-up Los Angeles seems especially romantic. Costume designer Mary Zophres spoke to Fashionista about her wardrobe choice for the scene, explaining that she was inspired by an Atelier Versace gown Emma wore to promote The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014:
"It's stunning on Emma and I pitched [that color] to [director Damien Chazelle] for that sequence. We had our first fitting and Emma started spinning around in this dress. She loved it. I loved it. She and I thought at the same time, 'Why don't we just use this fabric?'"
After hiring Rob Phillips to hand-paint florals onto the fit-and-flare, the look was just as flattering as Zophres imagined it. Read on to see the La La Land costume once more, then check out the red carpet number that inspired it, along with more of Emma's recent appearances in yellow. One thing's for sure: regardless of the silhouette or occasion, Emma looks downright gorgeous in the shade - the same goes for her new character, Mia.

4 Surprising Reasons to Drink Hot Water With Lemon Every Morning
Trying to cut coffee out of your morning? A cup of hot water with fresh lemon juice is an ideal alternative that many nutritionists drink every day - and it's not just because of its tangy flavor! Here are four compelling reasons to make this quick concoction part of your morning ritual.
- It helps you detox every day: While lemons may seem quite acidic, they're a surprisingly good source of an alkaline food that can help balance your body's pH; internist and doctor of integrative medicine Dr. Frank Lipman is a big proponent of a hot water with lemon habit, since the combination wakes up your liver and flushes out nasty toxins.
- It wakes up your digestive tract: This simple yet powerful beverage stimulates your gastrointestinal tract - improving your body's ability to absorb nutrients all day and helping food pass through your system with ease.
- It supports weight loss: Lemon juice contains pectin, a soluble fiber that has been shown to aid in weight-loss struggles. And if you've been sipping on a cup of tea loaded with sugar or honey every morning, this beverage will slash calories from your daily diet.
- It soothes an upset tummy: When you go to bed on a full stomach, pesky heartburn or a bloated belly can get in the way of your morning. Hot water cleanses your system, while the flavonoids from lemon juice may help reduce acidity in your stomach, so you feel like yourself sooner.

9 Secret Strengths of Introverts
Despite popular belief, there is nothing wrong with having an introverted child. Instead of trying to completely change these kids and force them to be more outgoing, it's important to understand why they act the way they do and celebrate the unique strengths that they possess.
Susan Cain understands that having a quiet approach to life is a great power and a tool that kids need to learn how to use instead of entirely reforming. In her book, Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverts, she explains that being an introvert is about having a deep inner life and considering it to be just as important. She also clarifies that there is a neurobiological difference between introverts and extroverts because their nervous systems react differently. An introvert's nervous system is more responsive to what is going on around them, which is why they feel more comfortable in calmer settings with less-stimulating surroundings.
While it's easy to spot an introverted kid in the group, many don't realize or appreciate the unique qualities among these children that should be celebrated. These are strengths of introverts that parents need to recognize and support in their children.

Facebook's Year-in-Review Video Will Make You Cry in Under a Minute
Facebook just shared its annual video that looks back on the year's many triumphant, funny, and disheartening moments - and how they played out on the social media platform. Facebook debuted the 2016 year-in-review video with a caption that read, "Today, we remember what was on our minds in 2016 and the moments we shared together." The video includes highlights like history being made at the Summer Olympics, Pokémon Go, and NASA's unprecedented look at Jupiter. Many low points, however, also come to mind - namely the Orlando nightclub shooting, the Syrian refugee crisis, the entire United States presidential election, and the loss of many icons like Muhammad Ali, David Bowie, and Prince.
It was an emotional roller coaster of a year, one that Facebook parsed through with grace. Watch the video above.

Selena Gomez’s Airport Pants Are Hard to Find, Which Is Why You’ll Appreciate Them Even More
Our no-fuss airport look always involves a pair of comfy leggings, a piece Selena Gomez seems to love, too. While most would choose simple black leggings, Selena opted for a beige Wolford pair - in leather no less - while walking through LAX. The unusual color and choice of material made her travel outfit stand out from the rest. And given that they're also (sadly) no longer available to shop, it's easy to see why Selena is keeping this version on hand. She first wore them back in 2015. The singer kept it simple with a cream-colored sweater, Dear Frances boots, and a necklace that said "13" on it.

Gina Rodriguez on Her Career: "I Decided I Was Going to Take Roles That Progressed the Image of Latinos"
If you had any doubts about Gina Rodriguez being quite possibly the most honest celebrity in Hollywood, they're about to go away. Take for example, the first thing the Jane the Virgin Puerto Rican star, who just got nominated for her third Golden Globe in a row, said to her interviewer for Marie Claire's January 2017 cover story: "I just had an IUD placed, and I'm in incredible pain. I legitimately want to just keep squeezing my pelvis right now." Yep, that happened.
The candid discussion didn't end there. Gina opened up about stereotypical Latino roles in Hollywood and why she won't take them, learning to love herself and that famous 2015 Golden Globe Awards speech. Scroll ahead for her must-read quotes and to see the gorgeous photos accompanying her interview.
- On her parents making sacrifices for their daughters: "Only one of my parents graduated from high school. Everything we had was funneled to education. My parents were both very aware that education was our only means of escaping [our circumstances]."
- On knowing she wanted to act and getting her start: "My path wasn't laid out for me in my family or my culture, because there are so few of us in the industry. That's how my whole career happened. Your eyes are open; you don't know what the next answer is going to be, but you're open. And you take every opportunity that comes your way."
- On turning down roles that perpetuated stereotypes: "I decided I was going to take roles that progressed the image of Latinos in the industry, and I was going to choose those roles over money. I wanted to make sure I was contributing positively and not allowing limitations to dampen my experiences and my journey."
- On loving herself: "I'm currently working on accepting love. I'm constantly working on the part of myself that doesn't feel like 'enough.' This relationship has been possible because, for the past six months, I have vowed to work on loving myself. I want to know that I don't need another to be full. So that whenever another person, an endorsement, or a project comes into play, they are an addition, not filling a need for value or fulfillment or worth or love. Because if I do that, I will forever be hungry."
- On her 2015 Golden Globes speech: "I didn't have the guts to write anything down, but my heart knew what it wanted to say all along. My father always says that if you don't lie, you never have to remember anything. When I'm honest or real, that's when life goes best for me."
The Horrifying Reason You Should Never Wear Hair Elastics Around Your Wrist
For decades now, we've been wearing hair ties on our wrists. Not only is this the most convenient method, but it's also the only way we can keep ourselves from losing them - otherwise, the darn things just disappear. But one Kentucky woman's harrowing tale may cause you to reconsider this accessory altogether.
According to WLKY, Louisville local Audree Kopp noticed a bump on her wrist growing bigger and bigger. Though she was prescribed a course of antibiotics from her doctor, it continued to enlarge and become inflamed, so she went to the emergency room. It was there that she learned her glittery hair tie had caused three kinds of infections in her wrist.
Dr. Amit Gupta at Norton Healthcare, who immediately performed surgery on Audree, believes that bacteria from the difficult-to-clean accessory entered her skin through pores and hair follicles. If she hadn't visited the emergency room when she did, the infection could have turned into sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by bacteria in the bloodstream. "People have been known to go into a coma, your body shuts down," Audree explained. "It could have been way worse."
We already knew that there is the small (but terrifying!) possibility of being paralyzed by a dirty makeup brush, but this story is somehow even scarier. Germs hiding in gunky brushes are a given, but we never expected them to be in our innocuous hair ties. Maybe it's for the best that they get lost when we're not wearing them – they have the potential to cause serious harm.

Out of Heavy Cream? Try This Kitchen Hack
Picture this: potato leek soup is on the menu for dinner tonight, and you're ready to get cooking when you realize that you forgot to pick up a pint of heavy cream. Don't admit defeat; all is not lost. We have a simple culinary substitution to ensure that your dish will still turn out.
To substitute 1 cup of heavy cream, mix 3/4 cup of milk and 1/3 cup of melted and cooled butter. Many people insist that this substitution will only work with whole milk (as opposed to skim or nonfat); however, in a pinch, give it a try, and see what you end up with. (Though, if it's for an important feast, you may just want to run to the store.)
Just don't try to use this substitution for whipped cream. Instead of a lofty mountain of dairy, you'll be left with a pool of disappointment.

6- and 7-Year-Olds Couldn't Solve This Math Test Question, and We're Not Surprised
The internet is having a field day figuring out what the real answer is to a simple math problem. A Twitter user named Louise Bloxham shared a math problem from a Year 2 (equivalent to the first grade in the US) workbook. The tweet and account are now gone but the problem asked, "There were some people on a train. 19 people get off the train at the first stop. 17 people get on the train. Now there are 63 people on the train. How many people were on the train to begin with?"
If you try solving it yourself, you'll probably get this setup: X - 19 + 17 = 63. All you have to do is solve for x, which gives you 65 as the answer:
@rachelrossiter @LouiseBloxham @MichaelRosenYes It is 65. x - 19 + 17 = 63
Therefore x -2 = 63 ...x = 65. Algebraic solution for a y2 Q.- Robyn Duckworth (@DuckworthRobyn) May 8, 2016
But if you look further into the comments, users start arguing that the answer is 46, not 65.
@teach_well @carveresque on a teacher's FB group a teacher said it was on the mark scheme as Being 46
- Louise Bloxham (@LouiseBloxham) May 8, 2016
Other commentators became philosophical and said that the math problem fails to factor in the train driver and inspector:
@PotMoss @MichaelRosenYes @LouiseBloxham Husband says "66, because we've forgotten train driver". But that doesn't factor in inspector...
- Mrs Davison (@Mrs_Dav_I_Son) May 8, 2016
The situation apparently became too much for one person, who said that everyone was "looking at it algebraically for proof purposes," when it was really just a simple equation.
@LouiseBloxham @MichaelRosenYes Question is perfectly fine. We are looking at it algebraically for proof purposes but it's simple add + sub.
- Olachi Akin (@ixXAkinXxi) May 9, 2016
Although the math question has stumped some parents and young children, the main concern here is not whether or not it can be solved, but if 6- and 7-year-olds should've been asked it. That answer to that question is simple: if there's this much debate about it with adults, then it's not suitable for children.

8 Savvy Ways to Update Your Wardrobe Without Spending Tons of Money
The following post was originally featured on Nany's Klozet and written by Daniela Ramirez, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Latina.
The best way to start the new year is with a "new" closet. When you clean your closet, you also get rid of old (and bad) energy, and you will feel a big difference. Having an organized closet will help you find your favorite pieces quicker and make getting dressed each morning easier.
Do a Closet Clean-Out
Start by going through everything in your closet and get ready to have five piles: keep, fix, donate, throw away, and sell.
What should you keep?
Ask yourself, have I worn this in the past year? If the answer is no, you are probably not going to wear it ever again. Here's a fun trick to know if you have worn something in the past year: put your hangers backwards every time you do a clean-out. When you wear something, put it back as it should be hung normally. At the end of the year, you can clearly see what you haven't worn in a while.
Then think, why haven't I worn it? Is it damaged? Does it not fit anymore?
If it has a little hole or anything that can be fixable, put it in the fix pile. If not, throw it away. If the items are in good condition but have no significant value, donate them. If you think you can get a little money, sell them!
Forget about sentimental value (unless it's a piece of jewelry your grandmother gave you, of course). This includes that old prom dress you know you are never going to wear again or that cute dress you wore to your first date 10 years ago. Getting rid of them won't delete that amazing memory.
Remember to do a clean-out with your beauty bag, too - makeup has an expiration date, and anything older than a year should be thrown out. Wearing expired makeup can cause breakouts and allergic reactions.
Host a Wardrobe Exchange
Let's say you organized your closet and you realized you have a ton of clothes in mint condition that you never wear. What should you do? Host a wardrobe exchange with your friends.
How?
- Invite a group of close friends and encourage them to invite people as well. You want to keep the group relatively small, but it's a great way to meet and bond with friends.
- Tell them to bring X amount of items. Just be clear about the fact that the pieces must be in perfect condition - clean, no holes, or stains. I recommend bringing a minimum of five pieces.
- Make it fun with appetizers and champagne.
- As soon as the people start arriving, group items by type - dresses, shirts, accessories, etc..
- If you came in with five pieces, you can take five pieces home with you.
The more pieces they bring, the more variety! It's the perfect way to have "new" clothes without spending a dime!
Raid Your Mom's, Sister's, or Aunt's Closet
If you still live with your family, this is easier. However, you can even ask your crazy aunt if you can check out her clothes from the '80s and '90s - I'm sure you can find some amazing things hidden in the bottom of her closet. I did this once with my aunt and she was super excited to see me wearing something from 20 years ago. Also, think outside the box: it doesn't have to be a woman's closet, dare to borrow your dad's shirt or even your boyfriend's jeans.
Find a Tailor You Trust
If you have jeans you used to love but you truly kept that New Year's Resolution to lose weight, and they are too big now; if you want to transform a midi sequin dress into a mini dress, a tailor is your BFF.
Find someone in your city that you trust for all the wardrobe basics, including hemming your pants and making that sexy dress fit like a glove. Then you can ask him/her for a discount when you bring that big ole fix pile. They can transform that dress with the cute print but unflattering neckline.
Shop at Vintage/Thrift Stores
A lot of people underestimate the power of buying in thrift shops or vintage stores. First of all, everything comes back in style. Second, I love thinking that the pieces have a story, that they were carried around when the world was a different place. (Well, that might be just me. I'm a little crazy!) Third, there's a big chance nobody else will own it - vintage pieces are very unique.
I've found amazing items on vintage stores. I found a pair of D&G shoes for $20, a small vintage Coach bag for $15, and silk blouses for $5.
A couple of tips:
- Wash everything as soon as you get home (no bedbugs, please!).
- Go with comfy shoes, because finding those hidden gems isn't that easy. You really have to go through piles and piles of clothes, but it is worth it.
DIY
This is the best way to update your current pieces. I often see clothes on the runway that I think might be fun to DIY. And the best part? Saying you did it yourself when people ask you, where did you get that?
Sell, Sell, Sell
Why not make a little profit from cleaning out your closet? If you have pieces in perfect condition that are valuable, put them up for sale.
Some options:
- Local consignment stores: I personally don't like this option, but if you want to get rid of a lot of things quick, this is a good way to do it. They are going to offer you very little money and they are very picky. I went to one called "Plato's Closet," and they rejected more than half of the things I brought and only offered me $50 for a lot of things
- eBay
- Poshmark: This is my favorite app to sell clothes. It is very easy to use and you can make great money from it. Sign up using the code "HPFVV," and you will get $10 to shop.
Every month I challenge myself, and I try to sell more. The goal: only spend what I have sold.
When Going Shopping, Think "CPU" - Cost Per Use
Last resort . . . go shopping. You deserve it after cleaning, selling, swapping, and raiding.
Never go shopping without knowing what you are looking for, this leads to impulse buying (and most impulse buys end up with their tags on at the end of the closet).
Along the way, maybe you realized you needed a white blouse or a leopard scarf. So write them down. Make a list of the things you really need, and the ones you really want. We all deserve a little treat now and then.
No matter what you buy, always think CPU (cost per use): the cost of the item divided by the amount of times you will use it.
For example, let's say you find a classic LBD at Forever 21 for $30, and you only wear it twice because the fabric lost its stretch when you washed it. The CPU of the affordable dress is $15.
An even better option would be:
You save up a little more and buy an identical classic LBD for $150 that will last 5 years. Let's say you wear it five times per year (and that's nothing because you can even wear an LBD with a denim jacket for a BBQ). The CPU of this dress is $6.
Also, I have a rule that I never buy anything unless I can think of three ways I can wear it. It's all about versatile pieces you can have fun with.
