Why You Shouldn't Teach Your Kids to Share
One of the principles of early childhood education is teaching children to play well together, which usually translates into teaching them to share. If you've ever seen three preschoolers playing in the sandbox, you know that even if there are 10 toys in there, they'll all want the same one, and there's usually a meltdown when one child doesn't get it.
But maybe sharing shouldn't be the goal of early childhood education. There's a new movement discouraging parents from teaching their kids to share, and it's gaining traction with parents and preschools alike.
Don't Teach Your Children to Share
"Forcing children to share doesn't teach the lessons we want them to learn," Dr. Laura Markham, author of the just-released Peaceful Parent, Happy Siblings, said. "Let's agree that the goal is for our children to grow into generous people who are able to notice and respond to the needs of others." In early educational settings, kids are learning to be able to meet their own needs, which, at this point in their lives, includes working and playing in their communities. "We don't want our kids to feel they should interrupt what they're working on to 'give' something to another child just because the other child asks," she added.
According to Dr. Markham, rather than teaching kids to speak up for themselves, forced sharing teaches them:
- If I cry loud enough, I get what I want, even if someone else has it.
- Parents are in charge of who gets what when, and it's arbitrary, depending on their whim and how dramatically I beg for my turn.
- My sibling and I are in constant competition to get what we need. I don't like him.
- I guess I'm a greedy person, but that's what I need to be in order to get what I deserve.
- I better "play fast" because I won't have this item for long.
- I won! But soon I will lose again. I better protest loudly when my turn is up to get every minute I can. And then start protesting again as soon as it's my sibling's turn. If I make my parent miserable, I'll get more time with the toy.
Give Them Tools Instead
So what should they be taught? Dr. Markham said they need to be given the tools to handle these situations. "We do want our child to notice when another child would like a turn, and to ensure that child gets a turn," she said. "And when someone else has something that our child wants, we hope that she'll be able to control her impulses so she doesn't grab it, but instead will use her words to work out an arrangement so that she can use the object in the future."
By teaching kids to advocate for themselves and not immediately share their toys, they aren't waiting for someone to tell them their time is up, and they can therefore play more freely with them. "The conventional approach of forced sharing undermines the ability of children to lose themselves in play, as well as undermining the sibling relationship by creating constant competition," Dr. Markham explained. "Neither child gets to experience the generosity of having their fill and giving to the other."
So What's a Parent or Educator to Do?
"I encourage self-regulated turns, where the child decides how long to use the toy so she can fully enjoy it, and then can give it up to the other child with an open heart," Dr. Markham said. She believes that doing so will help the child experience the feeling of satisfaction that comes with making someone happy while ultimately teaching generosity. In turn, she believes the experience is more educational, teaching kids:
- I can ask for what I want. Sometimes I get a turn soon, and sometimes I have to wait.
- It's OK to cry, but it doesn't mean I get the toy.
- I don't get everything I want, but I get something better. My parent always understands and helps me when I'm upset.
- After I cry, I feel better.
- I can use another toy instead and really enjoy it. I'm getting better at waiting.
- I don't have to whine and cry to my parent to convince them to get me a turn. Everybody has to wait for their turn, but everybody gets a turn sooner or later.
- I like the feeling when my sibling gives me the toy. I like her.
- I can use a toy for as long as I want; nobody will make me give it to my sibling at a moment's notice. When I'm done with the toy and give it to my sibling, I feel good inside - I like to give her a turn. I'm a generous person.
The end result is a child who learns patience and empathy and may be better equipped to handle bigger situations in the future.

Santa Spoilers and Other Terrible Things Parents Do at Christmas
Parents lament their children's wild behavior between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when the weather turns, the days grow short, and every time you turn around, a relative is handing your child another cookie after bedtime. But the adults eat just as many cookies. They drink too much Champagne and spike the eggnog. They binge on holiday movies and make threats about Santa taking back their kids' presents, and worse, they bust the power of Santa in the middle of all that joy. That's what I did.
My daughter has never fully believed in Santa. Partially because we've never built the myth up for her. Since she was born, we've only spent one Christmas morning in our own house, because we travel to our relatives'. The fact that we travel means that the gifts are loaded in the car, or the bags and boxes are wrapped when we arrive at Grandma's. The traditions are in place but vary from house to house. She's had different stockings, and the Christmas breakfast is never the same. Sometimes we open gifts on Christmas Eve, before Santa can arrive. She receives gifts from family members, while some gifts are labeled "From Santa."
When she asked me last year, who buys the gifts "from Santa," I was honest. I told her that we do, and our family members buy gifts. We give the gifts to each other. The "love" arrives, regardless of Santa. That is how we celebrate Christmas, and the story of Santa Claus is just that, a story that we enjoy. She seemed to already know this. Our house has never had great illusions about showers of toys from above. And I like it that way. Is it cruel to deprive my child of the magic of Santa Claus? What I've found is that Christmas, without Santa's rule, is still lovely and magical.
I'm not a total grinch, but I don't enjoy creating fantasies for my child in the name of tradition. I loathe the Elf on the Shelf. I don't like making kids believe only for the sake of belief. We're not religious, so there's not regular talk of miracles and faith. I hope to expose them to religion and faith over time, but I don't want to feed it to them. So far, our family hasn't settled into its Christmas tradition, and even that doesn't bother me. I have a hard time lying to my child, even if it's about an essentially fun thing. It feels wrong.
My 5-year-old is still happy to play along. We read the books, we talk about reindeer, we make cookies for Santa and enjoy decorating and lighting our house. But my child is playing with me, and that feels right, as we make traditions together. We go overboard on Christmas music. We expect snow. We travel far to be able to see our loved ones. We visit holiday markets and outdoor ice rinks. In our city, December marks the true beginning of Winter. It may snow in November, but December is when the snow begins to stick and stick around until, say, late March.
The magic of Christmas is waking up to a house that loves you, that welcomes you and has made a place for you. A house that will celebrate another year of being a family, that wants to embrace Winter and whatever lies ahead. It may be about fantastic, miraculous stories, but it is also about seasonal shifts in family living, as we focus on growing human connections and relish quieter, longer evenings in a warm place.

How 1 Boy Made Christmas For Families With Sick Children a Merry One
Most children wake up Christmas morning and can't wait to run downstairs in their pajamas to rip open their gifts from Santa - but not Jerry Hatcher Jr. On Christmas morning last year - and the two years before - Jerry woke up, put on his best suit, grabbed the wad of cash he'd been saving up and working for all year, and headed over to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta to perform Christmas miracles.
Unfortunately for Jerry, he understands what it's like to be in the hospital with your family around Christmas - the time of the year that is supposed to be the happiest - after almost losing his little brother to illness. To combat the sadness and stress that comes with living in a hospital with a sick child, Jerry took to the hospital cafeteria, hid behind the cash registers, and popped up every time a patient's family tried to buy their items. He'd pull out his wad of cash, pay for their food, and wish the family a merry Christmas.
Photos of the boy's incredibly selfless mission were posted to Facebook, and the commenters - many of whom were those treated to their breakfast by Jerry - had nothing but amazing things to say about him.
This young man brought tears to my eyes this morning when he so graciously purchased breakfast for my husband and I. We have been here at CHOA with our 4-month-old for the last few days - and have been very emotional and overwhelmed. The selfless action of this young man this morning brought so much joy to my heart. What a blessing he is!! He is truly making a difference in this community!!!! May God bless him and his family!!! Merry Christmas!

This Common Condition in Women Is Increasing the Risk of Childhood Autism
Children of mothers with a particular hormone imbalance may have an increased risk for developing autism.
According to a Swedish study released in December 2015, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) - a common disorder that causes enlarged ovaries with small cysts and affects between five and 15 percent of women of childbearing age - looks to be a major link to autism spectrum disorder.
"We found that a maternal diagnosis of PCOS increased the risk of ASD in the offspring by 59 percent," said Kyriaki Kosidou, lead researcher at the Karolinska Institute's department of public health sciences.
This study is the first to find such a connection, the researchers said. And, although they haven't proven a cause-and-effect relationship, they've theorized that exposure to sex hormones early in life - from mothers with PCOS producing excessive amounts of androgens, which aid in brain and central nervous system development - may play an important role in a child's risk of autism.
Further increasing that risk is if a mother with PCOS is also obese, the study stated.
For those women with PCOS, the researchers believe it's too early to make specific recommendations in terms of prenatal care. However, the study's senior author, Renee Gardner, said in a release that "increased awareness of this relationship might facilitate earlier detection of [autism] in children whose mothers have been diagnosed with PCOS."
The Most Heartbreakingly Beautiful Newborn Photos You'll Ever See
"I grabbed mom's hand and I told her this was quite literally the worst thing that could ever happen to a mother, but together we were going to get through this," Lindsey Natzic-Villatoro of Lovesong Events and Photography said of the scene when she entered Emily McClearen's delivery room. Emily and her husband, Richard Staley, were about to enter into surgery for the unthinkable procedure that would bring their stillborn baby girl into the world.
The baby was full term, and Emily had had a normal pregnancy, but on an ordinary morning, she was concerned about a lack of fetal activity. She drove herself to the hospital, where they put her on a monitor. The nurse was unable to find a heartbeat. An ultrasound revealed that the umbilical cord had wrapped around her neck and that she was no longer alive.
The doctors gave Emily the choice of delivering her baby vaginally or via C-section, and she chose the latter. The heartbroken couple returned at 5 a.m. the next day for the surgery.
"I am a professional but human," said Lindsey, who specializes in photography sessions that are designed to support and heal families coping with a loss or tragedy. She was called in by a friend of Emily's to capture the emotionally charged birth of her stillborn baby. "Set aside my everyday photography, I photograph about 15-20 terminal sessions a month that range from every tragedy under the sun, but that never makes it easy," she continued. "Every session I do affects me differently."
The following images are the results of Lindsey's flawless work in capturing Monroe Faith Stanley's tragic entry to and departure from the world. We'll warn you, they're tough to look at, particularly due to the fact that at 6 pounds, 2 1/2 ounces, Monroe looks like any other healthy newborn. It is the Stanley family's hope that Monroe's first and only photos be shared to bring comfort to other families who have experienced similar tragedy. We think you'll agree - it's impossible not to be moved and captivated.

If You Opened Princess Eugenie’s Jewelry Box, You'd Find These 2 Pieces

But, Princess Eugenie of York really is like most fashion girls, at least when it comes to her jewelry. She has a few go-to pieces - a smiley ring and delicate bracelets - that she wears to events and pairs with all her outfits. We took notice of the accessories when she stepped out for a movie screening in London, realizing she's always kept her accessories minimal and understated.
We'd expect a princess to possibly rock a tiara or fancy chandler drop earrings, but it's the everyday items this royal loves most. It's something we can totally relate to - and enjoy stocking up on - so scroll on to see how Eugenie layers her jewelry before shopping for items of your own.
Your Jaw Will Drop When You See How Many Presents Are "Under" This Tree
'Tis the season for gift giving, but how do you know when you've gone too far with the presents?
Our guess? When you can no longer enjoy the sight of your family's Christmas tree because it is overtaken by a massive stack of presents. This insane pile of wrapped packages is going viral because it's a pretty shocking sight for parents who can't help but imagine the overflowing credit card bills and other kids who are immediately jealous.
Although some Facebook users think this image is a glorious photo of all things Christmas magic, others feel that it's the perfect example of consumerism ruining the season. Emma Tapping, the mother who created this tree, isn't letting haters stop her fun and will continue posting photos.
"I LOVE christmas, I LOVE spoiling my kids in the festive season, and I work damn hard to make sure it is every bit as amazing as it can be," Tapping said.
No matter what, people should respect how others choose to celebrate the holidays and bring cheer into their homes. If nothing else, you can respect this mom's organization and give her an A for effort!

Glitter Strobing Is the 1 Holiday Beauty Trend Worth Obsessing Over
Regardless of which Winter holiday you celebrate, it's easy to see a recurring theme this time of year: light. Candles, lamps, and strings of lights add brightness, joy, and hope to the long, dark evenings. We'd argue that same trend translates into beauty looks of the season, too. Shimmer, sparkles, and metallic hues all make an appearance on lips, eyes, and cheeks . . . and beautifully reflect the light of your festive decorations.
This year, we're combining the most dazzling beauty accessory ever - glitter - with strobing. As you likely know by now, strobing is a trendy highlighting technique, which consists of applying a shimmery illuminator to the high points of the face like cheekbones, the cupid's bow, and browbones. We decided to kick this popular method into high gear by layering on glitter as a finishing touch.
Glitter strobing is not for the faint of heart, as it's intensely luminous, but it's also one that is sure to inspire both envy and compliments alike. Paired with an LBD, you'll sparkle at any soirée.
The fabulous aspect of this look (besides the glitter, of course) is that it can be completely customized to your desires, bone structure, and complexion. It speaks to the art and whimsy of makeup. Here, MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist Regan Rabanal designed six different looks using the new In the Spotlight collection on two different complexions, fair and deep. That said, you shouldn't feel limited to the colors used in the creations he whipped up - feel empowered to design your own sparkling masterpieces.
"Trying out and experimenting with different colors and sizes of glitter will help discover some amazing combos," he said. "Keep the combinations ombré and focused on the same color undertones." Read on for his tips and tricks and to spark your own creativity.
I Got Microbladed - Here's Everything That's Happened (So Far)
I've never gotten a tattoo, and I didn't plan on ever getting one. But when you see the transformation that comes as a result of microblading, it makes you reconsider.
I actually heard about microblading from Bella Thorne. Well, not directly through her, per say, but she had just been in studio for an episode of Pretty Unfiltered, a show I host here at POPSUGAR, and I started following her on Snapchat immediately after. She visited Microblading LA to get her brows done. I had seen the term thrown around a few times online, but the idea of getting something permanently done to my face freaked me out, so I never thought twice about it, until I saw Bella's brows.
Microblading is a procedure that essentially makes any and all brow products worthless to you, because you will not need to use them when you get the procedure done. It's a cosmetic tattoo that fills in your brows or, in some cases, creates a beautiful, sculpted, natural-looking brow, sometimes out of nothing. A technician uses ink and a handheld blade to create hair-like cuts into the skin. You know the meme that compares your brows? "Left brow: Speaks three languages, top of her class, helps the homeless. Right brow: lives with her parents, gets arrested, has no life goals." It speaks to me on a personal level. Getting my brows to a good place each morning takes too much time! It's not that I have nonexistent brows - my hair is coarse - but there are definitely patches of hair missing.
I try any and everything for our viewers, so I offered my brows up as a test. (You know, in the name of journalism.) And, of course, I wanted to go to the best, so I reached out to Lindsey Ta and Microblading LA. There, they have four rooms for clients, along with a larger studio that serves as their training academy. Lindsey, the owner, has been in the permanent cosmetics world for several years and won the 2016 World of Microblading Championship in Amsterdam this year. To say she knows symmetry of the face would be a gross understatement.
Before the Appointment
Lindsey was kind and personable during our correspondence, and two days before my appointment, she advised me not to take aspirin, drink alcohol or caffeine, or eat omega 3s, explaining all of these things could thin my blood. She also explained to me that clients who receive injectables should refrain from this service for at least two weeks after their last appointment.
The Appointment
"I tell everyone to expect a two-hour appointment," Lindsey said. The first hour or so is mostly for the mapping process and for getting to know the client. Lindsey says learning about her clients' lifestyle can help her give them perspective when it comes to their brows. For instance, someone who swims a lot or sweats a lot might not have as long-lasting results as some of her other clients. And I learned it's not how much or little brow hair you have that matters. Instead, the real focus is your skin type. If you have oily skin, the results might not last as long, either.
In terms of how long they last - that's the second question I always get (first coming later on) - it can be anywhere from one to three years, depending on your lifestyle. I imagine with my job, which has me consistently washing my face or doing some kind of crazy face mask at the drop of a hat, that mine won't last past a year, if that. But it sounds amazing to not have to do my brows every morning!
After filling out paperwork and chatting with Lindsey, she sat me down in front of a brightly lit vanity and offered me a mint. "We're about to get real close," she said as she popped one in, too. Then, she stepped back toward the vanity and looked me straight on, to my left and my right, observing my brows from every angle.
"Your left eye is smaller than your right," she said, matter of factly. She was right: having eye surgery as a child to remedy a condition called ptosis, I've noticed that my left eye has always been smaller and in the past year has started to droop. I shook my head. "I'm going to shape your brows so they look a bit more symmetrical." This excited me - perhaps I won't need another surgery to remedy this issue.
Mapping the Brow
First, they use a pencil to map out the brow. It's a very confusing process because they essentially create a giant outline of your brow, and I was worried I was going to look like a caricature of myself. Lindsey explained that they would never create single, straight, harsh lines on my brow. These lines are like a coloring book: they're guides to fill the brow in. They also mark the brows to indicate when the hair stroke should change direction, hence the vertical lines on my forehead.
Then, they use a 3D waterproof pencil to create hair strokes to use as a guide for the actual tattooing process. Once that is finished, she let me look at the shape and give my thoughts. Initially I was worried that they were too close together, but she reminded me that it would be fading, and the hairs wouldn't be as stark as the guide she created.
With my approval, she shaped my brow with a razor, cleaning up underneath and essentially lifting my brow. Then, she applied topical numbing cream, and 20 minutes later, I was lying down to get my first tattoo - on my face, no less!
The Process
The number one question I've received throughout all of this has been "does it hurt?" Yes and no. The numbing cream makes it so that you don't feel any incisions, but it's not perfect, so there were times I could feel a bit of discomfort when she was making the hair strokes. And let's get real: she was using a blade to cut open my skin! Of course it wasn't going to be pain-free. I'd describe the entire process, though, similar to an itch. She pulled my skin taut and sliced, kind of like creating a bunch of tiny paper cuts. I know this sounds painful, but it was more annoying to me than anything.
She created the incisions, and as she went, she filled them with ink. Lindsey asked some secrets of her practice to remain secret, so what I'll say about the ink is that it's, apparently, different than ink they used for standard cosmetic tattoos, so when it fades, it doesn't turn gray or purple; it just kind of disappears over time.
After the first round of incisions (about 30 minutes), she went back and fixed any imperfections. Then, she coated the brow with a layer of ink to seal her work. Two minutes later, I was looking in the mirror at my new brows.
After the Appointment and Aftercare
Staring at my new brows, I was shocked to see that this normal "dip" I have in the tail of my natural brow was completely gone: she'd filled it with the most perfect hair-like strokes I've ever seen. The sparse patch at the front of my brow had vanished, and she'd also created a few strokes closer to my nose, bringing them in a little.
The numbing cream wore off about an hour after the appointment, and it felt like my brows were on fire. They were fairly sore, too. (Again, I wasn't surprised.) Lindsey told me before the appointment that there were a variety of aftercare instructions, one being that I couldn't wash my face for a week.
SKIIIIRT. What?! Washing my face gives me great joy. I was not amused by this tidbit, but she explained that there is a "dry healing" period in which the brows will need to essentially scab over and shed. To prevent any scars and to help them heal quickly, it would be essential for me to keep my brows from getting wet for at least a week, which definitely made removing eye makeup and taking showers a very detailed activity. Oh, and picking off the dead skin was also a big no-no.
The good news, though, is that I was not allowed to sweat excessively, either, so it's too bad that I couldn't go to the gym, either. Truly.
It will be about four to six weeks before my brows fully heal, and during that process, I'll notice my brows get super dark, shed, get super light, shed, and them become the shade they were intended to be. After six weeks, I will return for a touch-up appointment.
1 Week Since the Appointment
I've been keeping a diary of sorts on Instagram regarding my microblading experience. The day after the appointment, my brows were so dark that I could have been mistaken for Groucho Marx or Bert from Sesame Street. I have found that I wear more eye makeup right now, since my brows are darker, because I want to balance them. Cleansing cloths from Olay and Q-tips have been my new best friends when it comes to makeup removal, and my Beautyblender has made applying moisturizer stress-free.
Over the past week, they've been itchy, and it's taken every inch of me not to scratch them profusely. Randomly, a little piece will hang off my skin and look like dandruff, which is super sexy, and at night, I know that my boyfriend probably has nightmares about my glistening, ointment-coated brows. But I have to say, not filling in my brows has changed me. It's a time saver, that's for sure. I have had to fill in the places where the brows have shed, but Lindsey told me that would happen and I could use brow powder to help.
3 Weeks Since Appointment
My brows feel fully healed, but Lindsay told me it would take about 4-5 weeks to see results. I do notice some areas that need to be touched up to make the brows look perfect without makeup, as I'm filling in some spots with powder right now. However, I'm loving that my brows as super low-maintenance!
The Cost
And the third most asked question: how much does it cost? Microblading LA charges between $700-$1,500 for this service, depending on how extensive your brow application is. If you're filling in a few spots, it's going to be less expensive than going in and getting an entire brow drawn onto the skin. Nationally, it seems the standard rate starts around $500.
Yes, it's an investment, that's for sure. If time is money to you, it's definitely worth it. I'm going to keep reporting each week on the status of my brows and how the process is going, so check back frequently to learn more about the process! Below is a photo of me, nothing on my brows, pretreatment, and a photo of myself on set six days later. I have nothing on my brows, even though I do have on more makeup.

Bobbi Brown Announces Her Departure From Her Namesake Brand
After 25 years of success, Bobbi Brown will be leaving her cosmetics line.
Her iconic brand, which has been owned by Estée Lauder since 1995, pioneered the idea that cosmetics were supposed to enhance how an individual looked, rather than change it. The milestone anniversary "made me realize it was time to start a new chapter and move on to new ventures," Bobbi expressed in a statement on Estée Lauder's website. Global brand president, Peter Lichtenthal, will continue to run the business after her departure.
Fabrizio Freda, president and chief executive officer of Estée Lauder, recognizes Bobbi's entrepreneurial spirit. "Today the brand is sold in over 70 countries and is a top makeup artist brand founded by a woman," he told Women's Wear Daily. "It's a global prestige cosmetics powerhouse, with a highly promising future, poised for its next chapter of growth."
Bobbi is expected to leave the company at the end of the year and announce her next steps sometime in 2017. She hasn't revealed what's next for her, but the makeup artist runs a successful lifestyle blog and is expected to stay in the business world. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
Little Boy Is So Terrified of Elf on the Shelf He Causes His Whole Family to Freak the Hell Out
The notorious Elf on the Shelf has become a staple item in family homes in the days leading up to Christmas. He's there to report back to Santa Claus and tell him if the kids have been naughty or nice, but some kids apparently don't respond too well to the surprise elf popping up mysteriously. This little boy was so petrified of the innocent Elf on the Shelf, he took having a sh*t fit to a new level.
The video, which was initially posted to Reddit, starts with a dad recording his kids' reactions to the elf, but immediately after, at the mere sight of the Elf on the Shelf box, his son loses it and beings screaming incessantly. However, the best part about the entire video is that even though the poor child is so terrified of the toy, he's wearing a shirt with an identical elf on it!
Watch the video above to see this Christmas Elf on the Shelf situation gone terribly, terribly wrong.
This Dad Asked Santa to Take a Photo With His Late Son, and His Response Will Break Your Heart
There have been many moving moments on Santa's lap this Christmas season. From playing with children with autism and using sign language with a deaf girl to helping a family reunite with their military dad, Saint Nick has performed his share of miracles from the big chair.
None, however, are as heartbreaking as this.
A photo - which has gone viral on Facebook last holiday season - shows Santa looking down at a framed photo of a smiling newborn baby boy. Turns out, that infant passed away last year, but the boy's father stood in line waiting for his son's chance to sit on Santa's lap.
Santa explained what happened next, and it is truly touching:
A man walked in today holding something in his arms. "I have a request," he said, turning around this picture frame. He took a moment. "My son passed away, last year." He choked up and couldn't finish his sentence. The entire photo set was silent. I said, "Absolutely." Without anyone saying anything, he handed me the frame and I placed it on my knee. In the photo, I could see on the little boy's armband that his first name was Hayden. I didn't ask any questions, but I am guessing that this is his first photo with Santa. The camera snap was the only sound I could hear through the entire mall. Normally, I hear all kinds of music and sounds, but it was absolutely silent. After a handful of clicks, we walked over to the screen and he pointed, saying, "That's the one." The girl working the computer printed him a full photo package and he pulled out his wallet, saying that this was going to be his gift to his wife. We gave him the printed package, telling him that it was a gift and that we would be praying for his family, this Christmas. He grabbed my hand and pulled me in and hugged me, then turned around and left. As he walked out, we all had tears in their eyes. I'm sharing this to remind us all that Christmastime is unbelievably hard for some families. Pray for the brokenhearted. Smile at people. Just be kind. Love one another.
Pray for the brokenhearted. Smile at people. Just. Be. Kind. Well said, Santa.

Negative Space Lip Art Is the Avant-Garde Holiday Trend You Haven't Seen Yet
Negative-space nail art has graduated from being a trend to a staple in the manicure world. And in its place, we are now mesmerized by negative-space lip art! The lip-art style leaves portions of the pout color-free, hence "space."
Los Angeles-based makeup artist Vlada Haggerty is leading the charge for this movement on Instagram. If you love her work, you can also buy prints of it via her Etsy shop (makes a fabulous gift for a beauty junkie who already owns many products!).
Our favorite look is the gold falling stars design featuring Pat McGrath Metalmorphosis 005 Gold, Bronze, and Copper pigments. Keep reading to see more mesmerizing lip art!

We Forgot How Chic a Fur Collar Coat Can Be, Until We Saw Jennifer Lopez Wearing One
Jennifer Lopez is known for her head-turning street style, and during the colder months, the singer and Shades of Blue star, who just wrapped filming the hit show's second season, adds extra chicness by accessorizing with a little fur. While her tomboy character Detective Harlee Santos would probably not wear such statement pieces, Jennifer rocks them like a superstar, as is evidenced by her recent Barney's New York outing in NYC.
Aside from her ankle-length skinnies, J Lo's shopping outfit was totally monochrome with varying shades of brown featured in everything from her handbag to her tassle-clad heels. However, like you might've predicted, our eyes deviated straight toward the focal point of the entire look: her wrap coat with a fur collar. Paired with a sleek top knot and big sunglasses, the bold outerwear added just the right amount of drama to an already-jaw-dropping ensemble. Keep scrolling to see more pictures of J Lo leaving Barney's and shop for your own similar jacket. Then, crank up our playlist of her greatest hits.

This Is What Happens When Faithful Pit Bull Owners "Attack"
In this tongue-in-cheek video from Above Average, we learn just how aggressive Pit Bull owners can truly be. (Insert hard eye roll here.) The video's host, Karen, presents situations where Pit Bull owners unleash their defensive attitudes on the public and gives warning signs to watch out for. She also gives you words to avoid when encountering a Pit Bull owner, including dog, hello, and just blinking. In the end, Karen points out the Pit Bulls themselves are actually wonderful dogs, it's just their owners you have to watch out for. We have found that Pit Bulls owners' level of devotion to their dogs is admirable and often warranted when their pups are given a bad rap. Keep it up, Pittie-lovers!
1 Wounded Veteran's Story About His Service Dog Will Bring You to Tears
After losing his leg in a grisly ambush during a 2004 deployment to Afghanistan, former Marine Dan Lasko returned to the United States carrying quite a bit of extra baggage - most notably, a severe and life-altering case of PTSD. Lasko not only struggled to adjust to his new physical disability, but also dealt with crippling anxiety and traumatic flashbacks on a daily basis. In an effort to cope with his new reality, Lasko eventually reached out to VetDogs (an organization that matches wounded warriors with service dogs) and was paired with a lab named Wally. The rest, as they say, is history.
Wally and Lasko began doing everything together, from daily tasks like grocery shopping to training for triathlons. With his family's support and Wally's unconditional love, Lasko is now a successful athlete and a college student. And though Dan's bond with Wally is something extra special, the Lasko family also welcomed another furry member, Maggie, into their ranks. Maggie, a rescue dog in need, has quickly become one of the pack just like Wally did all those years ago.
Watch Dan and Wally's full story above just in time for Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and don't forget to grab some tissues - it's an emotional journey sure to bring you to tears.

Lost Dog Hears Her Family on TV and Finds Her Way Home
The sad truth is that many dogs wander off and get lost, day in and day out. This was the case last year when a couple in Missouri discovered their dog, Tabitha, was missing. She and one of her humans, Alfred Schaefer, who has Alzheimer's, wandered off one day, and Alfred's wife, Kelly, was only able to find and bring him home. She was unable to find Tabitha.
The couple put up fliers and pleaded with the local community to help bring their dog home. They even went on the local news, in the video above, with their story, hoping to find their beloved dog. Kelly said, "To me, she's my kid. I love her as much as I love my husband."
But here's the twist! After the news aired, Tabitha came home! It turns out, someone had found her and brought her inside for safekeeping. When the family had the news on the TV, Tabitha recognized her owners and immediately perked up. The family who found her called it in, and after a quick confirmation that it was indeed the right dog, Tabitha was returned home to Alfred and Kelly. What a crazy happy ending, right?

If You Were Looking at Shanina's Shaik's Swimsuit, You Missed the Most Important Part of Her Pic
With years of modeling under her belt, Shanina Shaik's gotten pretty great at posing. So much so, she knows exactly what works when showing off her swimwear. In a beachside 'gram, the brunette beauty seemingly soaked up the sun while wearing a white American Apparel one-piece, popping her leg and holding both arms above her head. To the average viewer, her photo seems somewhat casual - a simple stance Shanina came up with on the spot. But looking back at past bathing suit pics, you'll soon realize: this is the model's signature swimwear pose.
Nearly every time Shanina wears a one-piece - and, sometimes, even when she's wearing a bikini - she does the same leg pop, and occasionally holds her arms up. Is this the trick to try the next time we chill by the water? Scroll through to see how well it works, then shop a bathing suit similar to Shanina's to achieve the full effect.

Dad Calls Out Men Who Steal Sleep From Their Wives in 1 Powerful Post
Dale Partridge isn't just an entrepreneur - he's a husband and a father who takes these roles just as seriously as his paying job.
When this dad looks at his stay-at-home-mom wife, he sees what many men don't. Although Veronica doesn't bring in an income, Dale not only recognizes the priceless value of all that she does daily but also understands the amount of effort it takes. "She spends all week serving me and the kids. I spend all week serving the bills. Most men think it's a fair trade, but I doubt it," Dale shared on Facebook along with a touching photo of his wife and child. "Husbands, we are no more entitled to a restful weekend than our wives."
In his powerful note, Dale is urging other men to remember that the 40-hour workweek is a cultural standard and that doesn't mean they shouldn't share in their partner's burdens. "The badge of 'breadwinner' doesn't authorize us to escape our home duties come Saturday and Sunday. The luxury of rest is a gift many men steal from their wives each weekend," Dale wrote. "It's okay to rest, God even commands it, just make sure you're not the only one doing it."

5 Warm and Cozy Reasons I Love Celebrating Christmas Eve
Singer, actress, fashion designer, entrepreneur, writer, and mom of two Thalia shares her parenting, lifestyle, fashion, and beauty tips as POPSUGAR Latina's contributor.
I have always loved Christmas Eve because it brings back so many memories! It reminds me of home when my dad was still alive, my mom was always cheery, and when some of my sisters were getting married. I remember when we decorated the Christmas tree together, and our cat wanted to keep us company wherever we were in the house. It was also the time when it started getting a bit cold in Mexico City, and we brought out the warm, cozy clothes. My mom used to knit us the cutest scarves and hats. And the food and its smells were always so amazing! It really is one of my favorite times of the year, but it is also a very emotional and nostalgic time for me. Here are some of the things that are never missing during my Christmas celebrations:
Mexican Food
On Christmas Eve, Mexicans make it a point to prepare an assortment of different foods for the family and the friends who may show up. One of those foods that my mother used to prepare, and I still crave, is salted cod. The recipe is a fusion of Mexican and Spanish influences, like many others that were brought over by the Spaniards. Another plate that is delicious and very typical for this time of the year is romeritos. They are small dried shrimp tortitas covered in mole sauce made with ingredients that include potatoes, nopales, almonds, and mulato peppers, infused with romerito sprigs. And we can't forget ponche! It is similar to sangria, but the alcohol is optional and it is served hot. Its ingredients include water, cinnamon sticks, piloncillo (dark brown unrefined cane sugar cubes), guava, and an assortment of other fruits. A perfect drink for chilly holiday nights!

Villancicos
Music is a very important part of life for us Mexicans and Latinos in general, especially during the holidays. It makes us happy and promotes family unity. Villancicos (Christmas carols) and posadas are typical of December. Family and friends get together to sing and bring music and holiday spirit to other members of the community. I remember singing along surrounded by family and lighting up candles to celebrate the true meaning of the season.
Family traditions
Keeping traditions alive helps us keep our memories alive. They are a way of hanging on to memories so you do not forget them over time. Traditions are ways to keep alive those whom we have loved and who gave us life, and those whom we shared wonderful moments with when we were growing up. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to pass on traditions from generation to generation. I find joy in filling my children's eyes, ears, and mouths with the colors of the holiday season, the beautiful Mexican Christmas carols that I used to sing, and the traditional flavors of the food I used to eat when I was a child.
Warmth
I like to spend Christmas in warm weather. It seems typical for many people to spend it in a snowy, cold place, but not for me. I enjoy sunny days and balmy nights during the holidays. That is what we have done for the past several years.

Diversity
Traditions also promote family unity, and we should strive to also create new traditions within the family. In my case, we have made a tradition out of our different traditions. Since my husband grew up in an Italian family, he brought his own Italian traditions to our family, and I brought mine. So, we have created our own traditions from the fusion of those two cultures and those of the country we live in. My children are Italo-Mexican-Americans, and it is a lot of fun to have them experience a multicultural Christmas in which we listen to music from Frank Sinatra, Pedro Infante, and mariachis and eat pasta fra diavolo and Italian-style lobsters, as well as Mexican plates. We still honor our family traditions, but we have found a way of mixing them up in order to create our own, unique spin.

The holiday season is an intimate time for many, filled with a lot of memories that move our emotions and may cause feelings of melancholy and nostalgia, and of sadness when remembering childhood and the way you used to celebrate with your family. I believe that the importance of Christmas relies on looking toward the future with hope. That is why there are presents under the tree, to remind us that life is today, at this moment, and that we have to enjoy it and be happy right now. Yesterday passed, and there is nothing we can do to change it, whilst the future is not here yet. Therefore, may those gifts under the tree make us reflect and make us be present.
It is time to put down our mobile phones, computers, and technology, and share a great meal, interesting conversation, and the smiles that were brought on by our beautiful traditions. Enjoy the holidays thoroughly. Merry Christmas!

Once You Zoom in on Margot Robbie's Engagement Ring, Good Luck Concentrating on Anything Else
With a quick Instagram snap of her engagement ring, Margot Robbie confirmed those rumors: she did, indeed, tie the knot with boyfriend Tom Ackerley. The two married in a secret ceremony over the weekend in Byron Bay. While the exact details of the big day are still hush-hush, the ring - which is front and center in the photo - is quite exquisite. We couldn't help but zoom in for a closer look at the sparkler.
Small stones on a silver band surround the pear-shape diamond, and though our first thought was "somewhat simple," that's precisely why we love it. The ring is a classic cut, not over the top or flashy, and fits right in line with Margot's personal style. We're sure the piece is one Margot will treasure forever, and it's even inspired us to find some similar options to the bride's.

No Fashion Girl Can Do Without This Top in 2017
I used to think of button-downs as polished and preppy, the easy answer to a look that's clean and classic. But enter 2017, and the simple button-down has come undone. We spotted the trend all over the Spring 2017 runways, referring to the pulled-apart shirt as "wardrobe disruption." While the pieces you'll see are still tailored, they're purposefully ripped at the shoulder, slashed down the arm, or intended to wrap (not button-up at all). They have an asymmetrical, off-kilter fit. In short, they mess up your outfit - but in the best possible way.
Bloggers are already in on the look, getting their hands on some of the freshest merchandise, and showing us how they plan on rocking it through the new year. Whether it's an oversize sleeve that extends beyond the hands, lending your silhouette geometric shape, or loose sashes that hang from your cuffs to the ground, there are so many ways to leave the classic top behind. Read on to see the single most popular piece girls will be 'gramming in the coming months, and get an early start by adding it to your wardrobe.
Some Parents Are Urging Others Not to Give Expensive Gifts From Santa - Do You Agree?
VERY interesting take on gifts from 'Santa'
Between parents hoping to outdo their own childhood and those caught up in the holiday magic, it's easy for many to get carried away while holiday shopping. And while what one parent spends on his or her own child is nobody else's business and shouldn't be judged, some across the internet are urging those high-cost items not to be gifted from Santa.
In a screenshot of a Facebook post with the user's name blurred out that has been shared across the social media platform as well as Imgur, one anonymous user explains why spending a lot on your child, and giving Santa credit, could be doing more damage than you realize. "Not all parents have a ton of cash to spend on making their kid's Christmas special, so it doesn't make sense to have Santa give your kid a Playstation 4, bike, and an iPad while his best friend at school gets a new hat and mittens from Santa," the user wrote.
Instead, he or she advises that parents be modest with their gifts from Santa and label the more expensive presents from them. "You can explain the value of money to kids, but you can't explain Santa's discrimination to a heartbroken kid," the user wrote. "Keep that in mind this year and always."
