How to Get Yourself to Eat When You Emotionally Don't Feel Like It
People tend to forget or neglect eating when going through emotional strain. Our friends at YourTango share their story on how to stay away from going on the "Divorce Diet".
I know I'm not your mother, but you HAVE to eat.
Even though my ex-husband and I knew divorcing was the best answer for resolving our issues, actually going through and getting over it was one of the most difficult experiences I have had. The transition was so painful I sometimes wondered if I would ever be happy again. Was I losing my mind?
My misery was so profound that I plunged into the depths of depression and anxiety. I had difficulty sleeping, making decisions, and eating. I had so much trouble eating that I took that urban legend, the divorce diet, to the extreme - I became anorexic.
When I look back at that time in my life, I feel tremendous compassion for the woman I was then.
She felt so lost, afraid, and out of control of her circumstances that I understand why she chose not to eat. It seemed like an appropriate choice.
There was the constant nausea.
There was the fear of gaining weight (and thereby becoming even more unlovable than she already felt).
There was the fear of spending money on food when there were so many other expenses breathing down her neck.
And then there was the sense of control that came with choosing not to eat.
From my vantage point today, I realize that choosing not to eat, or at times simply forgetting to eat, made getting through my divorce far more difficult than it needed to be.
Food has a direct impact on our ability to think. By starving my body, I was also starving my mind. Not eating exacerbated my difficulty making good decisions and added to the stress and anxiety I experienced every single day.
It's a vicious cycle that many people who divorce get trapped in. The depression, stress, and anxiety of divorce are typical appetite killers, and yet, the divorce diet only increases the negative impact of those emotional states.
The good news is that I eventually broke the cycle, and you can too, by following these 3 simple tips:
1. Ignore your instincts about eating.
You've probably lost your appetite somewhere along your journey through divorce. It's time to start using some logic.
Choose to eat something at regular intervals throughout the day instead of relying on whether you're feeling hungry. Consider setting daily alarms to remind yourself to eat.
2. Make eating easy for yourself.
Have simple foods like nuts, fruit, protein/nutrition bars, cans of soup, and frozen meals on hand so that finding something to eat is a non-issue.
Eating out is another option to keep mealtimes simple.
3. Use meals to build - and even rebuild - social connections.
The pain of divorce is terribly isolating and the loneliness is profound. Grabbing a bite is an easy excuse to get together with friends and family so you can connect with them.
The connections over meals can have a soothing effect well beyond that offered by the food you consume.
These steps work.
They're the exact steps I followed to break out of my extreme version of the divorce diet. They'll work for you, too.
It took me a while to get all three steps down, and I was far from perfect as I implemented them.
I started with ignoring my instincts about eating and just ate whenever the clock hit certain times. I ate whatever was easy (a bag of chips, a cookie, a protein bar, a banana) without much regard to nutritional value.
After I got used to eating again, I realized that although I felt better, I still felt like crap. I was eating too much junk food and not enough real food. That's when I started making sure I had simple, healthier food available.
Planning my meals made a HUGE difference.
Eating helped my ability to deal with my divorce. My thoughts were clearer, and with improved clarity, I realized that building connections with my family and friends over mealtimes was a great way to get out of the house. I learned how to think about other things and not hyper-focus my problems. Learning how to refocus helped me move on with my life.
Divorce is a difficult life transition, but you can ease your way through.
Just remember to eat.

For bigger dogs or dogs who've moved beyond the crate, you can still create a space just for them. This should be a secure area of your home, whether it's the living room, a bedroom, or a section of the kitchen. Separation training
It's hard to leave when your dog is crying or whining. If your dog is upset every time you shut the door, there's a solution! You can teach him it'll be OK. It takes some time, but a training routine to help with separation anxiety is effective. Change happens gradually when you're patient and consistent about it.
Here's how it works. Begin by asking your dog to "stay" in one room while you're home together. (It's nice if this room has plenty of treats and toys just for your pup.) Slowly extend the distance and time of your separation until you can leave him alone for 15-plus minutes without incident.
Eventually, your dog will learn to trust that everything will be OK - even when you're not around.

5 Reasons You Are a Failure at Applying Your Own Faux Eyelashes
You all tell me that you are incapable of applying false lashes.
You tell me about fiascos with glue and smeared eye makeup that happens right before a date or a party. You show me pictures of yourself on red carpets and at major business functions where your lashes are hanging on by a thread.
I really want you to learn how to apply lashes. Mostly because you deserve to have eyelashes. And secondly, if you know how to do it yourself, then I won't have to.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love how a full set of eyelashes can transform a woman's look. I always encourage my clients, especially those who will be photographed, to have lashes applied. However, if I never had to glue on another lash, I would be thrilled.
Any makeup artist who tells you that he or she enjoys doing lashes is lying to your face.
Any makeup artist who tells you that he or she enjoys doing lashes is lying to your face. We all joined this profession because we love the magic of makeup. We enjoy applying skin care and color to make your features shine. We are artists and we love trying new products and techniques; we love completing a beautiful look; we love the "before" and "after." I don't think any of us are waking up in the morning and saying, "I really can't wait to stick objects slathered in crazy glue into women's eyeballs."
I have a hunch that many of you are all making the same mistakes, which is hindering your ability to apply these lashes properly.
Stop doing these five things and your whole life will change (and maybe mine will, too):
1. You are buying the wrong lashes
The brand doesn't matter as much as the style. Most artists I know regularly use cheap lashes that can be found at the drugstore, so don't worry about spending a lot of money on a luxury lash.
The eyelash section of a store can be very overwhelming as there are so many choices. Don't be tempted by that huge overdramatic pair of lashes. You are probably not ready for those. These heavy lashes look fun, but this whole endeavor can become like "the smoky eye." You like it in theory and you like it on celebrities on Instagram, but probability is high that you won't like it on yourself. Start small.
When you are first learning, it is a good idea to pick up a few inexpensive lashes in different lengths and styles to try to figure out which best suits you. My personal favorite is the Ever EZ Trio lashes by Kiss ($6). They are small little clusters of lashes that you can easily pluck onto your lash line with a pair of tweezers.
The beauty of these is that you can create a natural look with just two clusters or really pile them on for drama. They are easier to manage than a full strip or individuals and you can really hone your craft by practicing with these delights.
2. Your are using the despicable glue that came with the lashes
When you open up your faux lashes, inside you will find a little tube of "lash adhesive." Throw that in the garbage immediately. When you purchase your lashes, you will need to also purchase DUO lash glue($6).
It comes in clear, white, gray, or black. They are all great, but I like the white. You can see it when you are applying the lash and it dries clear. DUO is your insurance that you will not have lashes hanging off of your eyeball at your photo shoot. I have been known to cry, exercise, and shower with great success while wearing lashes adhered with DUO.
3. The glue you're using is cold and thin
The minute you open up your lashes and begin this process, the first thing you should do is squeeze a little puddle of glue onto the plastic lash holder. Let it sit for a minute while you apply eye base to your lid.
The glue needs to warm up and start to congeal a bit. As it thickens it will be easier to manage and it will adhere quicker to your lash line without slipping and sliding all over your lid.
4. You are squirting glue from the tube directly onto your lashes
Don't do this. Work from your little glue puddle using a pointy cotton swab. Dip the swab into the glue and gently coat the band of the lashes with just enough glue to cover it. This will not look like a lot of glue, but it is plenty to get the job done. A common mistake is squirting glue from the tube. You end up with way too much, and again, you will find the lashes slipping and sliding all over the place.
5. You're using your fingers
Once you are an expert, fingers can work fine, but if you are just figuring this all out, using tweezers really helps. The tweezers will help you to gently lift the lashes out of their container without damaging them and then you can easily pop them as close as possible to your natural lash line.
With these five tips you will be in great shape. People ask other questions like, "Should you put on your eye makeup before or after lash application," or "Should you apply mascara to the fake lashes?" There are no rules. Practice different methods and see what works best for you.
One last tip: after all of this hard work to prep for a hot date on a Saturday night, wouldn't it be nice to have these bombshell lashes on for Sunday brunch or maybe even for that Monday morning meeting?

2016: The Year I Stopped Feeling Fat

"Lose Weight!" "You're not good enough!" " You don't fit in!" These have been the most consistent messages pushed toward women from the media for the past three decades. It's no surprise then that as a size 12, I've struggled with feeling fat. But women are finally starting to wise up, myself included. 2016 has been huge for body acceptance, and although it may seem like not all that much has changed, you can hear the wheels starting to creek.
Trust me, I should know! When I started The12ishStyle, I had no idea what to expect. Was anyone out there? Would anyone care? Almost instantly it was clear that yes, so many women felt like I did: ignored by fashion and uninspired. A little over one year in as a blogger, the feedback and engagement has been beyond what I ever expected. I see women finally appreciating their own body types and feeling empowered to wear something they didn't think they could wear. When a saleswoman tells me I should "try the 8" or directs me online for extended sizes, I know I'm not alone. Replacing a feeling of loneliness with one of community and empowerment has been an incredible change. Many things define me, but 2016 is the year I decided I'm not going to let "fat" be one of them.
So where did it all start? Although there were body-positive rumblings in years past, the Sports Illustrated Ashley Graham cover back in February seemed to break things wide open. Before that, I can honestly say I'd never seen anyone whose body looked even remotely like mine held up and celebrated in a mainstream way, let alone on the cover of the legendary swimsuit issue!

Her cover ended up being a much-needed wake-up call not just for myself but also for media, brands, influencers, and average-size women everywhere who were all suddenly down to join the conversation. As a result, 2016 was the first year I am actually starting to feel heard by the fashion industry I love so much. Amen to that!

Yes, there's more work to be done - shopping above a size 10 will still make you crazy, for instance - but before we get into 2017, let's pause to recap just how far size inclusivity has come this past year.
Graham wasn't 2016's only plus-size cover girl, with Women's Running magazine tapping Nadia Aboulhosn for their April cover. The accompanying article tied body positivity and self-love to running faster. Genius.
Mass retailer Lane Bryant finally responded to a general outcry for more fashionable clothing, announcing a collaboration with designer Prabal Gurung whose clothing previously has never been available above a size 10. It launches March 2017 - mark your calendar!

Speaking of designers, Christian Siriano stepped in to dress Leslie Jones for her July Ghostbusters premier after she tweeted she was unable to find anyone to dress her. Her floor-length red dress was uh-mazing.
Other celebs got in on the conversation too. Khloé Kardashian turned her mega star power to the world of denim with her line Good American, featuring sizes 00-24. Zendaya launched her clothing line with inclusive sizing as well, saying "Offering a limited size range is not even something that would cross my mind . . . because I just want everybody to feel included." YES.
The King of Make It Work, Tim Gunn called out the fashion industry for not making it work for plus size ladies in a compelling op-ed for the Washington Post.
While we're still waiting for most mass brands to get Gunn's memo (the exception being Target's highly shoppable WhoWhatWear collab), under-the-radar brands like Phylyda, Floravere, Universal Standard, and Of Mercer led the way with inclusive sizing.

And media outlets also got in on the action. Refinery29 launched their 67 Percent Project a commitment to making 67 Percent of the bodies they show plus-size as a way to reflect the population, with a September symposium on the topic. Meanwhile, Glamour Magazine launched a special plus-size issue featuring all clothing in size 12 and up.
For me, the biggest impact of all was felt in the world of social media. From bloggers like myself to models to influencers, average-size women everywhere are creating their own platforms and finding an engaged audience eager to connect. Amy Schumer posted #NoThighGapNoProblem at the Met Gala. Gigi Hadid responded to body shamers and encouraged acceptance. Women were encouraged to drop the towel at the beach and show of their as-is body as their "beach body." Looking ahead to 2017, I'm excited for another big year and you can bet social media will be leading the way.

You might not realize it at first, but there are a handful of styles that fall under the term "crop top." You've got your classic t-shirt variety, which pairs well with pretty much everything; crisscross and cutout options, both of which add some flair; and now, there's the underboob crop top, aka a sexy, revealing trend celebrities couldn't get enough of this year.

Push-ups, even when performed with your knees on the ground, are one of the best exercises to strengthen and sculpt your arms and upper back. This variation that involves bending your elbows behind you and moving down and up very slowly is intense, and targets the triceps so you'll tone your upper arms even faster!
- Begin in plank position with the arms and body straight, shoulders over the wrists. Keep the core engaged. If you need to, go ahead and rest your knees on the ground.
- Bend the elbows behind you and count to five as you slowly lower your chest to the floor. Keep your upper arms tight to your body so your elbows are against your ribs on both sides.
- Slowly straighten the arms, counting for another five, coming back to plank position.
- This counts as one rep. Do as many reps as you can with correct form.

There's nothing like a cold beer or a nice rosé after a long run. Two recent studies, however, show a close relationship between alcohol intake and physical activity, suggesting that exercise may even directly influence the amount people drink and when.
One of the studies includes research conducted by Pennsylvania State University, which looked at the lifestyles of 150 adult men and women from ages 18 to 75. Participants were asked to complete detailed questionnaires and to document their daily drinking and exercise activity using a provided smartphone app for three weeks. Volunteers continued to record their activity three additional periods throughout the year.
Results found that on the days people exercised more than usual, they also tended to drink more. Age, gender, and season didn't influence these findings. This connection, however, did not mean that exercise causes heavy drinking; more often than not, participants primarily stuck to moderate intake.
Test subjects in thesecond study included lab rats that showed both exercise and alcohol increased reward-processing activity in the brain. Although individually, exercise and alcohol did not have the same effects on the rodents, the high proved to be stronger when done together. Therefore, a possible explanation to how the two are interconnected could be that we want to strengthen and prolong our post-workout highs with a drink afterward. Alternative answers could include that people are more motivated to exercise after drinking because of calorie guilt and that those who work out together are more likely to socialize outside the gym or off field.
Although results from both these studies aren't a cause for worry, they might make you more aware of that extra glass you're more likely to pour the night of your workout. So keep calm and drink on (in moderation).

An Open Letter to All the Elf on the Shelf Haters Out There
Things that irritate me: when someone steals my credit card, when my plane is delayed on the tarmac for three hours, and when people talk on their phones at a dinner table. You know what doesn't bother me? What other people do with their Elf on the Shelf. I do not understand why there is so much hatred for the 12-inch doll that so many children adore.
Over the weekend, I posted my daily picture of Alfie on Facebook and received some of the normal likes, comments, and some affectionate emoji.
But one hater wrote, "I can't wait for Alfie to go bye-bye." I laughed it off and cheekily wrote back to him: "That's why Facebook has hide, block, and unfriend options. Otherwise you'll have to endure another week of this!" Quickly I had friends texting me and also replying under him to "keep it up!" along with other positive notes.
To be honest, I really don't care what people think of my elfing antics - I obviously do it for my kids, but also for myself and now for what has grown to be his own expectant audience. Here's why you should forget the naysayers, grab the elf and get to moving his felt tush around.
I started this tradition with my own family seven years ago when my mom sent us the book and enclosed stuffed doll. My then 3-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son crowned him Alfie. Like many parents, initially I made an effort to move him nightly from the tree to the fireplace mantle and continued to boomerang him back and forth with little creativity in mind.
The following year, I took it up a notch as Alfie enjoyed some marshmallow baths, hung from light fixtures, and headed up a trail ride with his My Little Pony crew. My kids were enamored with finding him every morning. They would spring out of bed, run around the house and squeal upon finding him cuddled up with his Calico Critter pals. With every December day that went by, so did the magical mornings. A few things have changed since our early Elf on the Shelf days but the magic has only grown.
Of course they've had their doubts along the way, and will continue to, but here's how and why I've kept the Elf on the Shelf magic alive.
I think it's fair to say that I go a little overboard with the Elf on the Shelf. I've even earned the nickname, "Michelf." I have a background in fashion design so it came naturally to me to make our elf some outfits. It started with Alfie Cyrus's "Wrecking Ball" costume and I couldn't stop myself after that. The children grew weary when my daughter found scraps of felt on the couch one morning but I wondered aloud if maybe he found his way into my craft stash and helped himself. She bought it and believed he was the Martha Stewart of elves. Soon after, they expected to find him in new threads every day, which they essentially do, and it makes them giggle as they guess what he is with every sunrise.
It may sound corny but there's something about a family tradition - as simple or as dumb as one may think it is - that forms a bond between siblings.
Another factor to keeping the magic alive was that I had another baby. Unlike my older two, my youngest hasn't known a Christmas without Alfie. Watching the older two kids indoctrinate him with Alfie stories, rules (DON'T DARE TOUCH HIM!) and getting him fired up for the elf hunt every morning for the last five years has been heartwarming. It may sound corny but there's something about a family tradition - as simple or as dumb as one may think it is - that forms a bond between siblings. I distinctly remember eating Daddy Ray's Famous Gingerbread and singing the same Christmas album every Christmas morning of my youth. Our Alfie may seem ridiculous and infantile to some but I'm pretty sure my kids will have some incredibly fond memories of him and his adventures for years to come.
As the kids age, their curiosity deepens and they are quick to question the veracity, and therefore the magic, of the elf. In recent years, I've had a couple of slip-ups that have required some quick and creative thinking. Three summers ago, all of my kids came running into the living room screaming, "MOMMY!!!! Alfie is here! He's under your table in your room!" I thought to myself, "*&$!! They found him stuffed in my bedside drawer!" I ran back to the room with them and sure as Rudolph's nose is red, Alfie was dangling from my bedside table as if I had planted him there myself. I looked at my watch and realized it was June 25.
Excitedly I told the kids, "Guys! He's checking in on you! We are half way to Christmas!" They jumped for joy and ever since then, Alfie is always with our family at the halfway point - in Texas, California or wherever we may be.
Similarly, my little munchkins were playing in my room a couple of weeks ago and their ball rolled into my closet. Due to my extensive Alfie scenes, I bought two extra elves last year as backup but never put them to use. However, the kids found them and declared them our new elves. I feigned surprise and succumbed to hiding two more red beings every night but have kept it simple with them. And to their delight, sometimes the simpler spots are just as enjoyable to them as my time consuming dioramas that I cut up every night.
So when moms say I am making them feel bad about their elf, I really don't think it matters to the kids. If the elf moves across the room in your house, that's all the magic they need to believe in the spirit of Christmas. All the extra stuff is mostly for our entertainment. I can promise you when Alfie was gussied up as Alfie Swayze from Ghost, the kids didn't get the laughs out of it that my adult friends did but they did find his pottery making skills quite silly.
Don't let the Pinterest obsessed or felt-cutting maniacs (yours truly) deter you from creating some fun in your own home. The bar can be set as low or as high as you want it to be. Just as your kids think you're the best mom in the world, they'll think they have the best elf in the world if you just help them believe.
How to create some hater-free magic for your Elf on the Shelf:
- Write notes to them using your non-dominant hand. They LOVE getting notes - keep it short or else you'll start to detest the task.
- Hide it in their room.
- Hide it outside! It can't get any easier than tossing Jingle in the pot by the door.
- Have it make a cut-out snowflake or something simple that you can hang from your tree as an ornament so your tot can turn to and connect a memory to it.
- When they question you about the elf, throw the question back at them. It has worked for me every time - "Mom, do you think Alfie is real?" "What do YOU think?"
- Make cookies or snacks for it every now and then. Tinsel needs cookies just as bad as, ahem, mom does, right? Wink, wink.
