Sorry, Beyoncé - Here's Why 2017 Will Be the Year of Solange Knowles

As one could imagine, it has to be hard following in the footsteps of Beyoncé. Sister Solange addressed it in a 2009 song she recorded titled "F*ck the Industry." On it, she sings, "I'll never be picture-perfect Beyoncé." Well, luckily for Solange, she doesn't have to be. In 2016, Solange became a star in her own right. After years of making eclectic music for her fans, she gained attention from mainstream audiences, who showed up to support her third studio release, A Seat at the Table, which sparked a viral hashtag for its social commentary on black identity in America. While 2016 was a great year for Solo, it appears 2017 is shaping up to be an even bigger year for the Houston, TX, native. Keep reading to see why Solange Knowles will dominate in the year ahead.

10 Traditions That Bring Families Together on Noche Buena

Growing up, Christmas Day was always the day when my family and I rested from Noche Buena festivities. As many Latino families do, the Christmas holiday is really celebrated on Christmas Eve with presents being opened some time after midnight. The great part about making Dec. 24 our very own is that the celebration is rooted in various special and unique traditions. Here are 10 of those celebratory Noche Buena moments to embrace on the holy night.

1. Villancicos

Of course, you know caroling is indicative of the holiday season, but in most Latin American households, villancicos (or Christmas carols) are a must, sung with the family, before midnight mass.

2. Misa de Gallo

Given that most Latin American countries have a Catholic background, Christmas is celebrated as both the commercialized holiday and the deeply religious one it is. After Christmas Eve dinner, many families go to midnight mass to celebrate Jesus' birth.

3. Lechón Asado + Caja China

While the recipes for how to make the lechón may vary, the truth is that the Caja China is a big part of Noche Buena. Cooking a lechón in a pig roasting box is a popular way to make the main dish for dinner on the night.

4. Coquito

Think eggnog but with a Puerto Rican twist. The alcoholic beverage is a staple over the holidays and how many families toast.

5. Nativity Scene

Many Latino families are anchored in the religious aspects of Christmas. On Noche Buena, or a time leading up to it, they will put out a Nativity scene, which will serve as a reminder that the night celebrates Jesus's birth. In some countries, the baby Jesus figurine is either covered or completely removed until midnight of Christmas Day.

6. Star-Shaped Piñata

In Mexico, kids are encouraged to break a star-shaped piñata on Noche Buena. The game adds a celebratory touch to the night.

7. La Novena de Aguinaldo

Nine days before Noche Buena, certain countries begin a novena, also known as nine nights of prayers. The ninth and final night of La Novena de Aguinaldo on Dec. 24 anchors faith in the religious side of Christmas.

8. Poinsettias

The beautiful red flower was adopted by Mexicans as a Christmas tradition and has since also taken the name of "Flor de Noche Buena." The flower decorates homes and church altars across the world now and is a longstanding symbol that Christmas is near.

9. Dominos

Some traditions have no true roots, other than the fact that they make us all feel good and come together. Playing dominos on Noche Buena is a longstanding part of the night that many Cuban and Puerto Rican families embrace.

10. La Polvora

While many countries have outlawed fireworks, or sparklers, it hasn't put an end to a tradition that many families participate in.

Here's How to Use Snapchat's 5 New Features - Including Creating Group Chats!

Group chats are finally coming to Snapchat in the app's latest update. Send snaps and messages to your friends in one chat, versus switching to text messaging to talk about what you just sent.

Snapchat's update is available today and easy to use. Start a group chat from the chat screen or after creating a snap. Like regular chats, whatever you send in a group chat will be deleted in 24 hours - whether or not everyone in the group has opened it. You can also use Bitmoji, stickers, voice, and video notes in the new feature.

Along with the group chat feature comes "Quick Chat." If you want to talk to a friend privately from a group chat, tap on their name and a new chat will start. This should help you avoid one of the greatest struggles of group chatting - talking to one person in a chat and blowing up everyone's phone.

In the same update, Snapchat is also introducing two new edit features and Shazam! The first new edit feature is the Scissors tool. Tap on the scissors icon, snip away at your favorite part in a snap, and a sticker will be created from it! With the new Paintbrush tool, turn any photo from your memories into a new photo that looks like it belongs in a museum. And if you're curious about a song playing near you, hold down on the camera screen in Snapchat and you'll see what song is playing - thanks to Shazam.

See what the new features look like ahead, including how to use them. These features should definitely amp up your snap game - and make you come back from using Instagram stories.

6 New Year's Eve Superstitions That Will Increase Your Chances For Travel in 2017

The guidebook for celebrating New Year's Eve with your family has already been written, and it includes every single superstition and tradition that Latinos hold to be true. While the old wives' tales can span from eating 12 grapes for luck to wearing the perfect color of underwear for love to starting the year on your literal right foot, if what you want is to be on planes, trains, and automobiles next year, there are only a few things you must have in your list. Have a little faith and follow our plan ahead.

1. Run around the block with a packed suitcase.

If you've ever spent New Year's Eve in a Latin American country, you know you can see more than a few people carrying a suitcase around the block when midnight comes. It's worth it since people swear it will ensure lots of travel in the new year!

2. Pack your suitcase right.

You can just throw stuff in the suitcase; you have to pack with a destination in mind. If you're looking to spend most of 2017 on the beach, then don't pack sweaters is all we're saying.

3. Run seven times around the house, fast.

If you don't want to walk around the block - you know, trying to avoid your neighbors thinking you have lost it - running around your room (or home) seven times is said to bring luck with travel, too.

4. Write it down.

Making a New Year's wish list and including your travel plans for the year is as great as sending a letter to Santa on Christmas - it helps you commit and visualize your wishes coming true. Put travel at the top of your list and you'll be good to go.

5. Grab a chair, an umbrella, and a suitcase.

New Year's Eve is the one time that having an open suitcase inside the house is actually considered good luck. The old superstition goes that if you stand on a chair with an umbrella open and one hand on a suitcase, you'll increase your chances of traveling over the next year. It might look weird, but it's worth a try!

6. Go in and out of the door, then repeat.

Grab your suitcase and walk in and out the front door of your home - this symbolizes the number of times you want to travel throughout the year, so give yourself at least a few minutes.

5 Secrets Patrick Warburton Revealed About A Series of Unfortunate Events

Dear reader, if you're looking for a cheery, uplifting interview about Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events, perhaps it's best to look elsewhere. Just kidding. As we draw ever closer to the Jan. 13 release of the tragic new series, we've gotten a wealth of captivating pictures, a small handful of compelling trailers, and a look at the full series cast. But what, exactly, are we in for once the full first season drops? We hopped on the phone with Patrick Warburton, who plays Lemony Snicket himself, to get a few hints about what's on the horizon.

  1. The series will dig much deeper than the 2004 film: "I think that this is the perfect format for these books. To be able to take a creator like Barry Sonnenfeld and give him the reins and say, 'Listen, we have all these stories, and we need to tell them fully.' Two almost one-hour episodes per book lets us be more comprehensive. Now, you actually feel like you're getting the whole book as you watch these. I think it's essentially like a two-hour movie per book."
  2. There are more stories ahead and a few secrets: "I believe there's a long-term plan to tell all the stories. Within them, there may be a surprise or two."
  3. All of those elaborate sets, from Count Olaf's mansion to the burned-down Baudelaire house to the underground tunnels, were very real: "Those were sets . . . Bo Welch is the greatest. The most fascinating set design work there is. He worked with Tim Burton on some of his iconic films and of course Barry Sonnenfeld on the Men in Black films. He's done so much, and he brings a lot of the realism. But then there's something sort of otherworldly or othertimely, a dimensionality that he can bring to his sets. It's just another element that is unique."
  4. Daniel Handler (the real name of the man who wrote the book series) seems pretty normal in real life: "He's fun! He's an interesting, cool dude. When I first met him . . . you're always curious to see the man behind the curtain. This inspiration of his, this creation, became quite profound with millions and millions and millions of readers worldwide. It's interesting when you find a writer who grabbed that lightning bolt. You wonder what it is that made this special, with so many other series and whatnot that didn't find what he found. What is it that made this so special? Was it the hand of God? Did it originate from sea of inspiration? How did these characters come about? These are all things you'll never find out sitting with Daniel at dinner and talking, but he's just a cool dude. It's been nice getting to know him a bit."
  5. Season two is reportedly in the works: "I know that there's talks and preproduction going on right now."

Strong Abs Start With This 7-Minute Workout

Get the printable version of this seven-minute HIIT workout here!

When it comes to high-intensity interval training (HIIT), the pros definitely outweigh the cons. While it may feel unpleasant to push your body to go faster and harder for that short time period, the rewards are worth it: HIIT helps you blast more belly fat, save time, and burn way more calories (even after your workout is long over) than a lower-intensity workout alone. A study published in the American College of Sports Medicine's Health and Fitness Journal found that a few minutes of training at almost your max can accomplish all of this in way less time than a traditional workout. How much less? Try just seven minutes total.

The ACSM's interval workout consists of 12 exercises, which should be done at an intensity of eight on a scale of 10; each exercise lasts 30 seconds, with a 10-second rest in between. Repeat the circuit if you'd like a longer workout. Keeping the intensity up - and the rest periods short - is key, so keep reading to learn the moves and then get going! You'll need a mat and a chair or bench.

No Star Has Ever Pulled a Style Switch-Up Like Selena Gomez

It takes a lot of confidence to completely revamp your look, especially when you're in the public eye. Selena Gomez knows a thing or two about that. The performer has managed to successfully define her style from the street to the red carpet to the stage, but as they say, "it takes a village." Selena credits much of her transformation to stylist Kate Young, who she began working with in 2015 while promoting her Revival tour.

Before that, she developed a relationship with Louis Vuitton designer Nicolas Ghesquière, and he's dressed her for many events. Selena has become a face of the brand, repping her favorite fashion house at the Met Gala and beyond. In 22 photos, you can see how she's held onto her sex appeal but embraced sophistication, all while managing to keep her feet firmly planted on the ground. Of course, it helps when you're rocking Louis Vuitton's sturdy platform boots.

24 Iconic Celebrity Tweets That We've Been Blessed With in 2016

The beautiful thing about a social media platform like Twitter is, well, anything goes. This especially rings true in the celebrity world - the quick-fire nature of a tweet often gives stars a place to speak their minds immediately. Which . . . sometimes gets them in trouble. Sometimes it blows up into a whole ordeal, like when Kim Kardashian posted a totally nude Instagram photo that spurred lots of backlash and even more cries of support. Sometimes, it's a smaller thing, like Adele's brief but charming tweets about the Grammys. No matter what the content, though, these kinds of things are quite often very entertaining, and 2016 has given us some of the best.

Facebook Messenger Just Got an Art-Full New Makeover

Facebook unveiled a major revamp of Messenger today. Stan Chudnovsky, head of product for Messenger, said the Messenger updates and changes were motivated by the same question that typically drives him and his team to innovate: "What do people do and how do we help them to do it more?" In this case, they turned their attention to just how visual Messenger - which began as a simple text chatting tool - has become. "People are spending hours and sending hundreds of millions of photos and videos to each other every day," he told me. "So how do we help them to do more of that?" Find out how he and his team answered that question below.

They Made It Way More Visual

Facebook is offering hundreds of new stickers, frames, 3D effects, and masks in the update. You can draw on your photos or videos, add text, or pull up emoji and badges that perfectly describe how you feel. (The morning I visited Facebook, "need more coffee"-themed badges were a popular choice among our test group.) The changes make Messenger feel a little bit more fun, sure, but they also reflect how people are already using the tool. More than 2.5 billion stickers, videos, pictures, and emoji are already being sent over Messenger each day.(That said, if you just want to kick it old school and send a simple text message, you still can.) Here's an example of my first attempt playing around with some of the new tools:

You Now Can Create Art Before Starting a Conversation

This new version is so art-centric, users can now start a conversation by first creating art with the "blank canvas" feature and then sending it to a friend or friends. While these new features might be reminiscent of Snapchat and Instagram Stories, one of the big differences is that Facebook has always designed Messenger to be used for conversations between individuals and small groups - not for publishers or influencers to reach big groups or fans.

The Camera Is Faster and More Integrated

The new Messenger camera works faster, and it's much easier to access. It's never more than one tap away, and the new shutter button at the bottom of the screen looks similar to - and is just as intuitive to use - as the shutter button built into any smartphone camera. Tapping snaps a photo, while pressing and holding records video.

17 Underrated TV Shows We Begged Our Friends to Start Watching This Year

Have you ever met one of those extremely passionate (OK, OK - annoying) people who are constantly like, "Karen, you need to watch *insert TV show name here* or I'm gonna pass out and die right here on the spot"? Yeah. That's us. For every Orange Is the New Black or The Walking Dead, there's another gem of a TV show just waiting to be discovered by the masses. Annoying or not, we've made it our duty to inform everyone about brand-new shows (like Fleabag) and ones that have been around a little longer (any The Last Man on Earth fans in the house?) that we personally feel need a little bit more love.

Why Having an Elf on the Shelf Is More Important Now Than Ever

For some families who have an Elf on the Shelf, it has become a beloved family tradition. But for its creator, Chanda Bell, this bit of holiday magic is something much more important than just a favorite Christmas tale - especially after the 2016 presidential election.

Because the Elf on the Shelf and pet friends focus on doing good deeds and promoting acts of kindness, this seasonal friend is an age-appropriate way to broach difficult subjects including acceptance, inclusion, and caring with kids.

"Some part of me wants to believe that this book and its timing is divine. There is such a feeling of divide, specifically here in the States. It's hard sometimes to know what to say to your kids and to talk to them about those types of hard subjects and hard issues - especially in a way they even care about," Chanda told POPSUGAR. "There's not a lot of ways to do that that are not psychological help books, but this is something fun that engages them."

Whether you're teaching your child that doing good deeds helps create Christmas magic, which in turn allows Santa Claus to bring smiles to families across the world, or using their relationship with Santa to explain philanthropy, the spirit behind Elf on the Shelf is encouraging kiddos to be kind to one another during a time when so many adults are struggling with this concept.

"It's important to me that as we build out this young generation's idea of what the North Pole is, that we're infusing it with faith, hope, love, and acts of kindness by arming parents with these talking points to help guide kids," Chanda explained. "Whether it's simply something like what are some of the things you can do that are nice? What are good deeds? Because sometimes kids hear words like that but don't know how to put it into action."

As parents spend time reading the stories of the elf, it allows them to introduce these topics: "That's how I'm able to talk to my kids about things like Saint Nicholas, how he was the first philanthropy and explain how he was generous before his time," Chanda said. "I want my children not to be so consumed with what they are getting for Christmas and I want them to first and foremost embrace the spirit of giving that is meant for the Christmas season - even though talking about it at first can be really hard."

Celine Dion Marks the End of the Year With a Tear-Inducing Tribute to Her Late Husband

It's been a tough year for Celine Dion, who lost her husband, René Angélil, to cancer in January, but in the midst of it all, Celine has found the strength to go on. On Thursday, the singer released a retrospective video on YouTube showcasing the highs and lows of her year. The emotional video begins with news coverage of René's passing and features footage from Celine's first performance following his death in Las Vegas. It also gives viewers a glimpse of when her son René-Charles surprised her with the Billboard Icon Award in May. The video ends with a heartfelt note from Celine that reads: "My voice does not resonate without you. You have made my childhood dream come true. I hope I have inspired you to reach out for yours." You may want to grab a box of tissues for this one.

Glitter Strobing Is the 1 Holiday Beauty Trend Worth Obsessing Over

Regardless of which Winter holiday you celebrate, it's easy to see a recurring theme this time of year: light. Candles, lamps, and strings of lights add brightness, joy, and hope to the long, dark evenings. We'd argue that same trend translates into beauty looks of the season, too. Shimmer, sparkles, and metallic hues all make an appearance on lips, eyes, and cheeks . . . and beautifully reflect the light of your festive decorations.

This year, we're combining the most dazzling beauty accessory ever - glitter - with strobing. As you likely know by now, strobing is a trendy highlighting technique, which consists of applying a shimmery illuminator to the high points of the face like cheekbones, the cupid's bow, and browbones. We decided to kick this popular method into high gear by layering on glitter as a finishing touch.

Glitter strobing is not for the faint of heart, as it's intensely luminous, but it's also one that is sure to inspire both envy and compliments alike. Paired with an LBD, you'll sparkle at any soirée.

The fabulous aspect of this look (besides the glitter, of course) is that it can be completely customized to your desires, bone structure, and complexion. It speaks to the art and whimsy of makeup. Here, MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist Regan Rabanal designed six different looks using the new In the Spotlight collection on two different complexions, fair and deep. That said, you shouldn't feel limited to the colors used in the creations he whipped up - feel empowered to design your own sparkling masterpieces.

"Trying out and experimenting with different colors and sizes of glitter will help discover some amazing combos," he said. "Keep the combinations ombré and focused on the same color undertones." Read on for his tips and tricks and to spark your own creativity.
