We still have a while to go until Outlander finally returns for its third season in 2017, but thankfully we have a few big things to look forward to. In addition to shocking surprises that will blow your mind and more hot scenes between Claire and Jamie, the upcoming season is bringing in a handful of new and important characters. Remember that whole time jump business? Well, it means a few of our faves won't be returning (Fergus can't stay little forever, unfortunately). Luckily for all of us, the new additions to the storyline seem plenty interesting.

23 Pictures of the Royals Laughing That Will Make You Spit Out Your Tea

The British royal family is a lot of things - graceful, well-mannered, and tight-knit - but one thing about them we can't help but love is their desire to cut loose sometimes. We know that Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and even Queen Elizabeth II haven't been shy about showing off their dance moves. We even know that Kate can shamelessly have a drink in the middle of the day. And we also know that they probably exchange a few funny comments while attending long (and probably boring) events together. But nothing is quite as entertaining as looking at photos of them all hysterically laughing. In addition to the funny faces they make, you can almost hear them saying, "I have actual tears in my eyes! Look at them! Actual tears." Keep reading to see some of their best LOL moments.

Wondering What Happens to King Ezekiel in The Walking Dead's Comics?

We've only just met the charismatic King Ezekiel on The Walking Dead, but he's already made a pretty huge impression. In the second episode of season seven, Carol and Morgan meet the leader at a new community called the Kingdom. This settlement is a little more rose-tinted than Rick's Alexandria or Negan's Sanctuary. In fact, Carol insists Ezekiel is selling his people a fairy tale. But as we know in the universe of The Walking Dead, nothing stays pristine for too long. If you can't wait to see what becomes of the show's newest addition, we're outlining everything that happens in The Walking Dead comic books.

Now, we know from this week's episode that King Ezekiel is well acquainted with the Saviors. In fact, he's already participating in Negan's infamous "arrangement," where his men come and take a share of nearby groups' supplies on a frequent basis. In the comic books, King Ezekiel becomes romantically entangled with Michonne. He also teams up with Rick and the members of the Hilltop community to take Negan and the Saviors down. Together, they launch a massive attack on the Saviors' main compound, but they're quickly overwhelmed by Negan's men. After the attack, Ezekiel attempts to overtake another Savior compound and tragically loses Shiva to a hoard of walkers.

As the casualties pile up in the brutal war with the Saviors, Ezekiel loses his footing as a leader. He spirals into a depression. He eventually recovers in time to help everyone fight off the Saviors when they attack Hilltop. This is the last big battle between all the groups once Negan is finally taken into custody. King Ezekiel returns home to the Kingdom, and Michonne goes along with him.

So, how does King Ezekiel meet his tragic end? At one point, Michonne leaves him, and upon hearing that her feelings for him are still there, Ezekiel goes after her. Ezekiel eventually encounters Alpha, the leader of a terrifying new group called the Whisperers. Alpha decapitates Ezekiel and puts his head on a wooden stake. He's later discovered by Rick and the rest of the group.

As a side note, the Whisperers might be coming to the show sooner than we think. They're actually pretty far off in terms of the comics, but as we've learned, the show sometimes does things differently. Diehard fans were quick to call out the connection when the show's official Instagram posted a snap of a severed head on a stake just before the season seven premiere. What's more, doesn't the snap look eerily like the frame of Ezekiel's head in the comics?!

If you thought that was the end of Ezekiel's nightmare, there's just a bit more. Perhaps the most tragic part is that Ezekiel's head reanimates while it's on the stake. So, when everyone encounters him, his head has become that of a walker's. Michonne, overwhelmed with emotion, can't bring herself to finish him off. So, Andrea (who's still alive in the comics) steps forward and does it instead. So, there you have it! King Ezekiel may be selling a fairy tale now, but there's a high chance his death will be just as bleak as the rest of the apocalypse.

Every Single Naked Dress Jennifer Lopez Has Worn Since 1997

You might think that Jennifer Lopez's streak of dresses with necklines down to her belly button and slits up to her thighs started with that famous Versace green dress she wore to the Grammys in the '90s, but let us tell you that after intense research, we've come to the conclusion the naked dress trend was started by J Lo much, much earlier.

The singer and actress was truly the pioneer of the barely there dress that has now invaded the red carpet, starting with no backs in 1997 and ending most recently with sheer gowns and jumpsuits that leave little to the imagination. Here, for your viewing pleasure, is every single naked dress (yes, every single one!) that J Lo has graced us with.

Here are the women in Nick's past you need to know about before you tune in for The Bachelor premiere!

3 Basic Things to Know About New Bachelor Nick Viall

What Happens in the Walking Dead Comic Books After Negan's Brutal Entrance

Negan is an unfortunate plague upon season seven of The Walking Dead. First, we watched him kill two major characters in the season premiere: Glenn and Abe. Now, two more people have fallen victim to his sadistic killing streak. While we're still being gradually introduced to his world, we do know how the rest of Negan's storyline plays out in the comic book series. The Walking Dead TV series has veered from canon before, so we can't assume any of this will really go down on the show.

At this point, you have to know that in the comic books, it's Glenn who Negan mercilessly beats to death with Lucille. So after all that ugliness, Negan and a group of the Saviors head to the Alexandria safe zone to take a bunch of stuff from Rick's people. Carl ends up hiding in the truck with Negan's men on the way back (this happens slightly differently on the show), and when he's found out, Carl uses an assault rifle to kill a bunch of the Saviors. Rather than killing him, Negan takes an interest in Carl. He shows Carl around his compound, the Sanctuary, makes a stop to torment one of his many wives, and forces Carl to remove the bandage from his eye socket. Negan even lets Carl hold Lucille while he burns the face of a man his "wife" slept with.

Days later, Negan goes by Alexandria and is approached by Spencer Monroe when Rick is gone. Spencer tells him that Rick is a bad leader and that he (Spencer) should be in charge. Negan kills him on the spot for his cowardice - RIP Spencer. Negan and Rick butt heads one last time before he leaves Alexandria, and on his way back to his compound, Negan is attacked by Rick and his crew. Negan basically laughs in his face, and Rick realizes that he's surrounded by Negan's army. There's a scuffle, but Negan ends up back at the Sanctuary to prepare for "All Out War." (This is a big deal in the comics.)

Rick is actually the one who initiates a fight with Negan and his men. He tells Negan to clear the space of women and children, and when Negan refuses, Rick and his men open fire. Rick's army takes out a portion of the walls, allowing zombies to pour in and flood the courtyard. In the heat of battle, Negan catches one of his men about to rape a woman from Rick's side. Negan stabs him and apologizes to the woman. Despite having several wives, Negan does not approve of sexual violence. Part One of the war ends with Negan's men bombing Alexandria with grenades.

The next day, Negan comes up with a plan to cover Lucille and all of his men's weapons in zombie guts. That way, whoever they hit will be instantly infected. They attack Rick's colony, and Rick ends up getting shot with an arrow. Negan and his men temporarily retreat, and when they go to take over Rick's people, Negan is shocked to see that Rick is still alive. Rick manages to convince him that they shouldn't be fighting; they should be pooling their resources to fight the zombies - then he slashes Negan's throat. Don't freak out; Negan doesn't die.

Two years later, Carl goes to the basement in an unknown house and talks to a shadowy figure about a girl who showed him her boobs. (I'm not making this up.) The man asks Carl if he still wants to kill him, and Carl says, "Yes, Negan. You know I do." He's been living in the basement for two years! He and Rick have some loaded discussions about mercy and why Rick is really keeping Negan alive. Negan ends up escaping with a character named Brandon Rose. He's still alive in the comics, but he's missing in action.

And there you have it! That's Negan's storyline as far as we know. Let's see how closely the show sticks to the books.

24 Movies That Are Definitely Turning 20 Years Old Next Year

Now that 2016 is (thankfully) coming to an end, it's time to look forward to what lies ahead in 2017. But how can we look forward without getting a little nostalgic about where we've been? Once the New Year hits, a whole new selection of movies will officially be two decades old. All of Brendan Fraser's shirtless glory in George of the Jungle? One of Robin Williams's most iconic roles in Good Will Hunting? All that heartbreak from Titanic? It's all turning 20 next year. And that's just the tip of the iceberg . . . pun intended.

The Love in Sterling K. Brown's Family Photos Will Wrap Around You Like a Warm Blanket

Sterling K. Brown is one of our biggest Hollywood crushes, and it's not just because he's very, very good-looking. The actor, who has made a name for himself with showstopping performances in American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson and This Is Us, has been married to his college sweetheart, Ryan Michelle Bathe, for nine years. After meeting and falling in love at Stanford University (and overcoming a few breakups and makeups), they tied the knot in June 2007 and are now parents to two adorable sons. While we're very obsessed with Sterling's current onscreen family in This Is Us, which Ryan also guest stars on, it's his real-life moments that really make us melt.

13 Stellar New Books to Keep an Eye Out For This January

With its sensational selection of new books, 2016 is going to be hard to top. But hey, we've got to start somewhere, right? This month, a fresh new crop of books is already setting a precedent for a pretty impressive slate in 2017. Sorry, Beyoncé - Here's Why 2017 Will Be the Year of Solange Knowles

As one could imagine, it has to be hard following in the footsteps of Beyoncé. Sister Solange addressed it in a 2009 song she recorded titled "F*ck the Industry." On it, she sings, "I'll never be picture-perfect Beyoncé." Well, luckily for Solange, she doesn't have to be. In 2016, Solange became a star in her own right. After years of making eclectic music for her fans, she gained attention from mainstream audiences, who showed up to support her third studio release, A Seat at the Table, which sparked a viral hashtag for its social commentary on black identity in America. While 2016 was a great year for Solo, it appears 2017 is shaping up to be an even bigger year for the Houston, TX, native. Keep reading to see why Solange Knowles will dominate in the year ahead.

Once You Zoom in on Margot Robbie's Engagement Ring, Good Luck Concentrating on Anything Else

With a quick Instagram snap of her engagement ring, Margot Robbie confirmed those rumors: she did, indeed, tie the knot with boyfriend Tom Ackerley. The two married in a secret ceremony over the weekend in Byron Bay. While the exact details of the big day are still hush-hush, the ring - which is front and center in the photo - is quite exquisite. We couldn't help but zoom in for a closer look at the sparkler.

Small stones on a silver band surround the pear-shape diamond, and though our first thought was "somewhat simple," that's precisely why we love it. The ring is a classic cut, not over the top or flashy, and fits right in line with Margot's personal style. We're sure the piece is one Margot will treasure forever, and it's even inspired us to find some similar options to the bride's.

How to Bounce Back From a Holiday Food Hangover

When there's such a delicious (and elaborate) meal on the table, it's easy to go overboard during the holidays. Whether it's a salt binge, too many sweets, or a combination of the two, don't resign yourself to feeling uncomfortable all day long. These tips will help you feel better sooner.

Start chugging (water, that is): Be sure to hydrate before bed and have a full cup of water ready to drink as soon as you wake up. Former Canyon Ranch director and group fitness expert Aimee Nicotera also recommends drinking two to three liters of water throughout the day. It may feel counterintuitive to drink a lot of anything when you're feeling full, but you'll start feeling better immediately.

Freshen up: Aimee suggests starting out the morning with a hot shower, so there's no time to sit around and succumb to that "blah state." Taking the initiative ASAP will make everything else feel easier. Once you're all cleaned up, don't just reach for any old outfit; choose clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. "Feeling better mentally is an important part of feeling better physically," says Aimee.

Fill up with morning fiber: One of the worst things you can do after overindulging is skip out on breakfast the next day and mess with your metabolism. Instead, enjoy a filling breakfast like a cup of oatmeal or bowl of high-fiber cereal. A breakfast that's full of fiber will support healthy digestion and keep your stomach satisfied throughout the morning. This way, you won't be ravenous for a huge lunch or snack on whatever's in sight and stay stuck in the cycle.

Stretch and twist: According to yoga teacher Tara Stiles, it's plain and simple: "Twists just get things moving." After a big meal, get things moving with a fire-building yoga sequence full of twists that support digestion and release toxins. If you don't have time for a full sequence, take two minutes to move through a handful of yoga poses for digestion - especially that Reclining Twist!

Get in some cardio: Even if you're feeling bloated and sluggish, hitting up a quality cardio session to sweat things out is one of your best defenses against the dreaded food hangover. Whether you head to your favorite cardio class or spend 30 minutes on the treadmill, you'll feel 10 times better after a little exercise.

Keep your meals clean: You don't have to go overboard with a liquid diet or crazy detox, but do your best to eat clean all day long. Reach for balanced, light meals full of fresh seasonal produce and whole grains. Steer clear of processed foods and too much sugar or salt - your body will thank you later.

Let it be: After you've had a fun night out, don't be unkind to yourself. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to enjoy a festive meal freely, so don't allow negative self-talk to take over. The best thing you can do is move forward with a positive attitude and happy memories of your fun.

23 Parenting Moments That You'll Look Back On and Laugh

New parents are hilarious. I can say that because I was a new parent once - and I'm guessing that if you are reading this site, that means you have been as well (or will be at some point soon). One of the best things about our new parent selves is just how clueless we were when it came to the whole baby-raising thing. Technically speaking, we all read the books, but there is a certain bit of know-how that you can't get until after actually being in the game for some time. My husband and I have spent many a moment saying, "Wow, do you remember when we did XYZ when so-and-so was a baby?" And like everyone, we were just trying our best, but how many of these moments (which come from my very own new parenting playbook, by the way) do you look back on now and have a chuckle?

The Walking Dead: Yep, We're Already Starting to Get Details About Season 8

The seventh season of The Walking Dead isn't even halfway over yet, but we've already received some exciting news. The show has officially been renewed for season eight. This means we've got plenty of apocalyptic zombie horror to look forward to, all the way through mid-2018. So, if you're feeling bored by the single storyline pacing of the last few episodes, or find yourself looking far, far ahead to a time when Glenn's tragic, graphic death is a distant memory, season eight is the place to go. Let's go over what we know so far.

The Season Will Kick Off With the Show's 100th Episode

Typically, it's a huge deal when any TV show hits this triple-digit benchmark. It must be especially true for TWD, seeing as pretty much every season has been only 16 episodes in length. Considering this accomplishment is also a season premiere, chances are the show could pull out all the stops in a way they might never have before.

Yep, Negan Will Still Be Around

During an interview with Howard Stern, actor and Negan portrayer Jeffrey Dean Morgan confirmed that Negan will still be a big deal, even after season seven concludes. "I know I will be on board for season eight," Morgan said. "We've finished [season seven] a week ago. The next two, I'm really big in. I'm f*cking heavy in those." It makes sense, really. Especially if you know what happens to Negan in the comic books.

We Can Venture a Guess at What Might Happen

Based on the pacing of season seven so far, there's a very strong possibility that the huge war against the Saviors could happen in the second half of season seven. So, what sorts of dangers are lurking on the horizon? In the comic books, the next evil group is called the Whisperers. And they're just as terrible as Negan and the Saviors, if not more so.

It Will Almost Certainly Premiere in October

Seeing as every single season of The Walking Dead has premiered in mid to late October, it's safe to assume we'll get season eight then as well. You know what that means, right? We're officially less than a year away. Let the countdown begin.

You're Going to Weep at This Dad's Reaction to Seeing His Son For the First Time

So many of the most incredible birth photos capture the exact moment a baby is born, and a group of photos taken by Jaydene Freund of Cradled Creations is the perfect example. The main difference with her photos, though, is rather than taking the first snaps of the baby with mom in the background, the Canadian couple featured asked Freund to instead capture the look on Dad's face as his son was born.

The photo is included in a full video of baby Theodore's birth story, an unmedicated and natural birth that elicited deep emotions from Mom, Dad, and loved ones in the delivery room. "This family planned to have dad catch and when baby started to emerge, mom had to yell at him to 'go catch the baby,'" Freund wrote on the video page. "He ran over just in time as the head was already out. . . . It all happened quickly and moments later the baby's body slid out and he was holding his son in the air with both hands. He was overcome with emotion."

Watch the video to see all of the birth footage and photos - you won't get through it without crying.

8 Books to Read If You're Still Obsessed With Gone Girl

In 2012, Gillian Flynn's third novel, Gone Girl, was published. The psychological thriller tells the story of Nick Dunne, a man who is suspected of murdering his wife, Amy, after she goes missing. As the investigation progresses and their marriage is put under a spotlight, people begin to question just who Amy is and what she may be capable of. The novel received critical acclaim, sold over 2 million copies in its first year, and spawned the 2014 film of the same name, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. While the cast has mentioned the possibility of a sequel, Flynn herself has said that it could happen "at some point." While we're waiting, check out the list of books ahead that you're sure to obsess over if you loved Gone Girl. If you've read all these already, we can also recommend some great marriage thrillers!

On New Year's Eve, Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofksy soaked up the last of 2016 with a date in Central Park. With their romance still afloat at the start of 2017, perhaps we'll see more sweet moments in months to come.

These 9 Crime Documentaries on Netflix Will Shock and Amaze You

That being said, it can be incredibly hard to parse through the glut of shows and movies on Netflix - there's an entire category devoted to crime! - but we have watched all of them and have nine recommendations that will have you glued to your seat and scrambling for more.

Dax Shepard Was Freaked Out by Kristen Bell's "Unbridled Happiness" When They First Met

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have been an adorable duo for years, but believe it or not, things weren't always so sweet between the two. The couple, who tied the knot in 2013 and are parents to daughters Lincoln and Delta, first met in 2007 at a birthday dinner for mutual friends. While you would probably assume it was love at first site based on their chemistry, it was actually the opposite. Kristen revealed that their meeting was "not electric," while Dax admitted he was freaked out by Kristen's bubbly personality. "When I met her and her friends, I was suspicious of their unbridled happiness," he told Good Housekeeping magazine. "I thought, 'Something stinks here; they're in a cult.'" But just two weeks later, they ran into each other again while out with friends, and Kristen said "it was on" from that point. Thank God for fate!

This Bride’s Gown Might Not Seem Over the Top, but the Story Behind It Will Move You

Once we hear the story behind a bride's wedding dress, we love it even more. When Lydia Forte married Dimitri Chandris at a romantic Tuscan ceremony, the bride didn't look to a big designer for her gown. Instead, she wore a custom creation by someone close to her: her mother, Aliai Forte. Lydia's cream-colored dress featured delicate floral embellishments on the bell sleeves and she revealed to Vogue that the entire look was actually created around her veil. The 16-foot veil was made of antique lace, which belonged to her great-great grandmother.

"For the ceremony, we needed something grand enough to hold its own in the cathedral, but not too fussy or over the top. It had to fit the countryside and Tuscan town setting as well," Lydia said.

The couple said their "I dos" inside a rustic church in the town of Massa Marittima before hosting a reception for 400 guests in the medieval cloisters. Though the wedding was grand, it was the small personal touches that made the day romantic and familial. Scroll to see Lydia's Tuscan fairy-tale nuptials, then zoom in closer on her dress and veil. They're one of a kind, after all.

Going a Day Without My Phone Changed Everything

Do you want to get more sleep? Do you wish you had extra time in your day? Interested in generally enjoying the world around you? Then turn off your smartphone for a day. That's what I did this week, and let me tell you, giving up your security blanket - I mean iPhone - is liberating.

At 7:15 a.m. my alarm went off. Usually this would be my cue to grab my phone and start my morning Internet routine: Check work email. Reply to urgent work emails. Check personal email. Reply to urgent personal emails. Read morning news digests sent to my inbox. Check Facebook. Check Instagram. Check email one more time. Force. Myself. To. Get. Out. Of. Bed. Sound familiar?

Thanks to ditching my phone, my morning felt way longer and more relaxed.

Instead, it went something like this: Get out of bed. Take a shower. Get dressed. Make coffee. Open laptop. Read email, social media, and news while leisurely enjoying my coffee. Head to the office. Get there 20 minutes earlier, since I got out of bed 20 minutes earlier. Thanks to ditching my phone, my morning felt way longer and more relaxed.

But let's get back to that journey to work. My phone usually plays a big part in it. I call my mom on my 15-minute walk to the subway or listen to podcasts or music. This day I was faced with a solitary walk, free of distractions. And I liked it! I let my mind wander. I noticed the architectural details on the homes I passed. I discovered that on a clear day, you can see the very tip of the Golden Gate Bridge peeking out above the homes on my hilly street. My gut reaction: quick, where's my phone so I can snap a pic for Instagram? But instead, I had to enjoy it all by myself. The walk through my San Francisco neighborhood felt like my little secret.

Once on the subway train, the five-stop journey seemed surprisingly faster, since I wasn't frustrated with a podcast that wouldn't load or a playlist that stopped streaming when I lost service. I also wasn't reloading my email like an addict every time we pulled into a station.

The workday was pretty uneventful without a phone. I'm glued to my computer anyway and popped over to the deli across the street for a late lunch. It didn't give me much time to wait for my food without anything to distract me. I did have a semi-important call with someone in NY, but no phone. So, I used the Google Voice plugin on Gmail to make the call for free. And the Messages Mac app kept me in text-message contact with all my fellow Apple users. And of course I had access to Facebook and Instagram on my browser.

Getting through the day wasn't as hard as I expected, but come 6 p.m., I felt nervous about the commute home. I wore heels that day - but couldn't even think about calling an impulse Uber! Instead of popping in my earbuds in the elevator and firing up the latest Fresh Air on the NPR app, I was faced with a 40-minute commute, free of any personal entertainment. Instead, I grabbed the New Yorker that had been chilling on my desk for a month. Keep in mind: the text-heavy New Yorker and eye-candy Instagram sit on exact opposite sides of the attention-span spectrum.

I've taken the same subway route for five years now, but it seemed different. I felt like an alien visiting from another planet, observing a human society glued to their screens. Now unplugged, I noticed how bizarre it is to see grown adults walking around oblivious to the world around them, and dangerously close to the platform's edge no less. Bump into them, and they seemed jostled out of a social media- or music-streaming-induced dream. I thought, "Who needs Terry Gross when you have a fascinating anthropological experiment happening before your eyes?"

I felt like an alien visiting from another planet, observing a human society glued to their screens.

Now home and filled with smug self-congratulation about a few hours without my iPhone, I opted for a more time-honored screen-time tradition: watching TV. But even vegging out had changed. After dinner, which is always phone-free in our house thankfully, we plopped on the couch for some House of Cards bingeing. Instead of distracting myself with my phone, I gave the TV my full attention . . . until I didn't. Without Facebook and group texts to keep me awake, I found myself passed out at 9:30 p.m. Off I went to bed, where I didn't log some typical end-of-day email checking. I often go to sleep at 11:30 p.m., but that night I was tucked in at 10 and fast asleep until my alarm woke me up. And when it did, I decided to skip my usual still-in-bed phone time and go straight to the shower.

The 1 Move That Made Me a Better Mom, Instantly

I love Facebook. Like a lot. So much so that I found myself spending all sorts of time looking at it, searching it, and bringing it into just about every conversation. Something had to give. Except that I did not want to be one of those folks who says, "I'm done!" and then ridicules everyone else still stuck on Fakebook. Because the truth is that I do think that social media is a wonderful thing. Heck, I kind of love Facebook. I just needed to ease up the amount of time I was spending on it. So I decided to keep my account but delete the app from my phone. I can still check in on my computer as often as I want, but do I? Rarely. And the effect of this simple decision went far beyond improving my mental state; it also improved my maternal state. It may sound crazy, but I know I'm a better mom now that I don't have 24/7 access to my Facebook news feed. Here's why.

Fiber: The Weight-Loss Wonder You're Not Eating Enough Of

If you want to lose a few pounds, there's one thing you should definitely be eating more of: fiber! Why? This plant-based roughage is a weight-loss wonder. But fear not: you don't need to resort to eating old-school oat bran cereal or adding a fiber supplement to your smoothie in order to up your fiber intake. Some of the most delicious foods, such as raspberries, strawberries, chickpeas, edamame, and sweet potatoes, are also some of the highest in fiber. Read on to get the lowdown on how fiber can help you shed pounds, find out how much fiber you should be eating, and get 10 yummy fiber-rich meal and snack ideas.

How Much Fiber Do I Need?

We all know most Americans aren't eating enough fiber, but how much do you really need? The USDA recommends you eat 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories. So, if you are eating a 2,000-calorie diet, you need about 28 grams of fiber per day. Most Americans get about half that, since the Standard American Diet is high is processed foods and animal fats that are devoid of fiber. In order to get more fiber, you need to eat more plant foods: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds are all excellent sources.

What's the Difference Between Insoluble and Soluble Fiber?

While nutritional labels don't discern between insoluble and soluble fiber, they come from different sources, and act differently in the body, too.

Insoluble fiber is found in the peels, skins, or husks of plant-based foods. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water, and so it passes quickly through your body, mostly intact, promoting regularity, as long as you have adequate water intake.

Soluble fiber comes from the "flesh" or innards of plant-based foods. For example, when you eat an apple, the skin of the apple is insoluble fiber, while the flesh of the apple is soluble fiber. Soluble fiber does dissolve in water. Once ingested, it forms a gel-like substance in your small intestines that mixes with other partially digested foods.

If you focus on eating more whole plant foods, you don't need to be overly mindful of the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber, since they are usually packaged together in whole foods such as brown rice, corn, beans, chickpeas, grapes, apples, raspberries, and celery.

What Makes Fiber Such a Weight-Loss Wonder?

Fiber-rich foods are important for weight loss for two reasons:

1. Fiber-rich foods make you feel satisfied but are naturally low in calories.

The math on weight loss is actually pretty simple. In order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. Sounds easy, right? The problem is that in order to feel "full," receptors in your stomach also require a certain amount of food. Here's where insoluble fiber, in particular, plays an important role: while insoluble fiber is a carbohydrate, your body can't digest it as well as it digests other carbs, sugars, fats, and proteins, so it basically helps create a sensation of satiety by filling you up, but then passes right through you without adding to the net calories you are eating.

2. Fiber helps regulate blood sugar levels, which can curb overeating.

When soluble fiber forms its gel-like substance and mixes with other foods in your small intestines, it can help "trap" sugars and fats, and slow their absorption, according to the National Fiber Council; therefore, insoluble fibers can further aid weight loss by stabilizing blood sugar levels, which can curb overeating and prevent your body from storing excess fat.
