The Sad Trend That's Ruining Our Relationship With Food
"I know this is basically all carbs but . . . " I stopped myself mid-sentence when I realized I was trying to justify my food to someone else. I had ordered a gluten-free banana almond butter toast with local honey and cinnamon from Project Juice - a seemingly very healthy meal - but found myself borderline self-shaming for my "indulgent" choice in a carb-laden breakfast.
Pause for a moment: raise your hand if you've ever made yourself feel bad about a food choice, regardless of what that choice was. Raise your hand again if you've justified what you were eating to someone else, or have been ashamed of what you've ordered or eaten in the company of friends.
This is not cool, guys! And I know this because I've been there, too. It's a form of food shaming, and it's not chill.
We're shifting into a healthier, more accepting mindset with our bodies - loving our shape, embracing imperfections, and celebrating every stage of our physical journey. But have we refocused our negativity and self-deprecation to what's on our plate? I'm personally trying to nip that in the bud, stat.
I've noticed myself and others adopting a mindset of "it's healthy . . . but not healthy enough." For instance, an acai bowl is arguably a healthy breakfast, but you could find yourself saying, "It's all sugar," or, "There's not enough protein." Hello! It's natural sugar from fruit, not processed sugar and flour, and not every single thing you eat has to have protein.
Why are we in a competition with ourselves and the universe to out-healthy one another, so much so that we shame our otherwise-healthy choices? "Mmmm, that kale smoothie looks good, but the almond milk is sweetened so it's basically a Snickers." The f*ck?? We really need to wake up from this.
This also applies to foods that aren't conventionally healthy, like eating a piece of pizza or having a cocktail; we shouldn't feel guilty or like we need to earn these indulgences. I'm not saying just eat whatever the f*ck you want - we should absolutely be conscious about our choices. Obesity is still a problem in our country, as is heart disease, sugar addiction, etc., etc. But I am saying to acknowledge food as a choice, as fuel, and often as a means of pleasure and enjoyment - and that's OK! This is why we love the 80/20 approach to eating!
One of my favorite quotes about this idea was from a woman I interviewed last year about her 100-pound weight-loss journey who said, "Food is food and it can be used for fuel or pleasure, but it doesn't define my character." Here's why this is so important:
Your Relationship With Food
Constantly guilting yourself over food choices can spiral into something more dangerous than some off-handed comments (like an eating disorder). What can start off as something lighthearted, even funny (trust me, self-deprecating humor is my specialty), can turn into a truly negative relationship with food. As one recovering anorexic woman told POPSUGAR, "I innocently thought that I was just exercising and eating healthy, but over time, I continued to take it to extremes."
The concept of "healthy" is relative to each person. To my lactose-intolerant friend, my Greek-yogurt-based smoothie isn't healthy, but to me it's an excellent source of protein. There are no hard and fast rules or lines between what is or isn't "healthy," so by arbitrarily making up the rules, we subject ourselves to guilt, confusion, and negativity. Is a life of obsessively counting and restricting calories, second-guessing choices, and feeling guilty and sad at every single meal time something you want to deal with? (Hoping your answer is no, BTW.)
Your Impact on Others
What we say affects other people, too. Whether you like it or not, your words and actions impact those around you, and you might be more of an inspiration to your friends and family than you realize.
A few months ago I overheard some women in a Megaformer class saying, "We can go get those margaritas now - we deserve them!" and my first reaction was "Girl, please!" My second one was, "Is this really the language we've developed to communicate with other women?"
At the risk of sounding like a cheesy motivational cat poster (or a fake Gandhi quote), "Be the change you want to see in the world." Do you want your friends, workout buddies, co-workers, and family members to have a great, healthy relationship with food? Lead by example. If you're calling out your food as "not good enough" or "not healthy enough," you're giving the people around you a reason to second-guess themselves.
How We Fix It
Through my experience and bits of psychological research (including an interview with acclaimed psychologist Dr. David Burns), I've identified these distorted thoughts that are cropping up - here's how I plan to destroy them so they never, ever come back. Ever.
- Focus on the positive. Sometimes you're going to eat something that might not be the healthiest thing you can put in your body. Instead of beating yourself up, focus on the good parts - if you enjoyed it, if it made you feel good, or if there was a redeeming quality nutritionally.
- Avoid "all or nothing" thinking. Just because your smoothie is a little carb heavy from the fruit doesn't mean it's disqualified from the healthy category. A little cheese on your fajitas doesn't mean they were bad for you. Eating the yolk of the egg won't sabotage your diet. No food is "perfect," and as we mentioned, these "rules" are relative.
- Stop comparing. Have you ever ordered a burger at a lunch when your friend ordered a salad and immediately regretted your choice or been embarrassed by it? You already know it's time to cut that out.
- Remember, it's just food. Always remember that quote from above - food is food. It's just food. You don't "deserve it" as much as you don't "not deserve it." Eating a "healthy" food doesn't make you "healthy," just as eating an "unhealthy" food doesn't make you "unhealthy" (this is called "emotional reasoning"). Just enjoy your food, strive for great choices, and keep moving forward.
- Avoid "should" statements. Using "should" and "shouldn't" when it comes to your diet is going to set you up for frustration and failure.
- Be conscious of your words. This applies to when you're talking to yourself, talking to others, and talking about yourself in front of other people. Be positive, not degrading.
- Don't project. Just as you don't want to food shame yourself, don't do it to others. Don't blame someone's health problem or physical woes on what they're eating, because everyone's body is different, and also you kind of look like a d*ck when you do that.
Stop yourself in your tracks when you start to notice these negative food thoughts cropping up or if you catch yourself saying them aloud to a friend. Soon enough, you'll have killed this habit before it even had a chance to form or take over your life. And the best part? You'll have a happier, healthier relationship with food. Mmmmm, food.
Guy Fieri Settles It Once and For All: Where Exactly Is Flavortown, USA?
Munchies, the Food section of Vice, recently published an intriguing interview with Guy Fieri. Helen Hollyman, the editor in chief and author of the essay, asked the Food Network star the question so many of us have pondered after all these years: "Where exactly is Flavortown, USA?" Guy responded in a way none of us could have expected:
"On camera, I once said, 'This pizza looks like a manhole cover in Flavortown.' Willy Wonka had a chocolate stream, you know? So it's taking these iconic food items, these iconic food moments, and giving them a home. They all live in Flavortown. It's like one of those things in The Matrix: You can only get down with Flavortown if you believe in Flavortown. I have people walk up to me and say, 'Hey, I'm a citizen of Flavortown.' I have people that want to pledge to be a city council member of Flavortown or the mechanic. It doesn't stop. What would be the airline of Flavortown? Sausage Airlines? It just doesn't stop. I just said it, and then people heard it. Of course, there's no Flavortown - unless you believe in it."
So there you have it, folks; Flavortown exists in your mind, and its citizens are your favorite food memories. BRB, booking a one-way ticket via Sausage Airlines to Flavortown!

2017 Is Already Looking Much Better Thanks to These New Celebrity Couples
Last year was a disastrous year for love in Hollywood, but luckily, 2017 is already looking a lot better thanks to a select number of celebrity couples who have decided to give love a shot. Selena Gomez and The Weeknd have not been shy about flaunting their newfound romance all over the globe, while Lady Gaga and her man have been keeping a low profile. Shay Mitchell and Amy Poehler, on the other hand, both have yet to publicly step out with their new boyfriends, but we're holding out hope that they do so soon.
How to Temper White Chocolate
I won't try to sugarcoat it (until later that is); tempering white chocolate is by no means an easy process. Why should you bother? Well, tempering chocolate melts the chocolate to a specific temperature so the fat and sugar molecules collide. When the chocolate cools and hardens, it appears smooth and shiny and has a toothsome snap. Not all chocolates are created equal. We've covered how to temper dark chocolate, but here's the technique for tempering white chocolate, which requires a similar technique but different temperatures.
Tempering chocolate can be done at home in about two hours, but you'll need a candy thermometer and the proper couverture chocolate, which has a higher cocoa fat percentage and will melt and coat things easier. If there are any two rules to remember, do not get any water on the chocolate or else it will seize. Also, stick to the exact temperatures or you run the risk of creating a myriad of unpalatable chocolate globs. Keep reading to learn how to temper white chocolate.
Could Mace Windu Be Supreme Leader Snoke? This Theory Is Very Convincing
When it comes to the newest Star Wars trilogy, so much is still shrouded in mystery. Since watching 2015's Episode VII (The Force Awakens), our primary focus has been on the main character, Rey. The world at large couldn't stop theorizing about the identity of her parents. Now that we know Episode VIII has been titled The Last Jedi, our minds are spinning even more trying to figure out who the title is referring to. Among all of these questions, one even larger mystery seems to linger: we're talking about the identity of Supreme Leader Snoke. As we consider the suspects, one new theory has come totally out of left field. What if Mace Windu, played by Samuel L. Jackson in Episode I, Episode II, and Episode III, is the mysterious new villain? Let's break down the logic behind the claim.
Mace Windu Might Still Be Alive
Jackson stated in a Twitter Q&A in June 2016 that he thinks Mace Windu is alive. "In my mind, he's alive. [Jedi] can fall incredibly high distances and not die." It's worth noting that Mace Windu loses a hand and experiences the full impact of Palpatine's Force lightning before he's flung out of a window to his death. That said, no Jedi has ever died in the series from any of those three types of injury. In fact, some characters have survived falls of even greater distances. If Mace Windu doesn't die in Episode III, there are unlimited options for where he could be.
But How Could Mace Become as Disfigured as Snoke?
As is clearly evidenced in that very same scene, the reason Palpatine becomes so deformed is because of his own Force lightning deflected back at him. It stands to reason that Windu could develop the same horrifying scars and pallor from Palpatine's attack. Snoke's huge head scar could be from Windu's great fall. And, hey, they're both bald. It's worth noting.
Wouldn't He Be Old as Hell, Though?
Yes, but that doesn't mean his survival up through the new trilogy is out of the question. After all, Snoke does say he witnessed the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire, meaning he was around during the first two trilogies. This means he could very well be Mace Windu.
Mace Windu Is in Touch With the Dark Side
Mace Windu notably harnesses the power of the dark side, even in spite of the fact that he's a Jedi knight. Even his purple lightsaber is an indicator that he straddles both sides. The trademark blue of the Jedi could mix with the red of the Sith to get this very color.
Mace Windu's Motive For Revenge
So, why would he turn to the dark side? Well, the fact that he's betrayed by Anakin Skywalker may be reason enough. We know Snoke is determined to find Luke Skywalker, and using Anakin's betrayal as a motivating force would explain why. Plus! If you subscribe to the theory that Rey is actually a Palpatine, it strengthens the argument and explains why Snoke is so obsessed with her. After all, Mace Windu would want to get back at Palpatine for everything he does in that supposed death scene.
There are even more layers to this, but that's the gist. If you're interested in Mace Windu's signature lightsaber move, his connection to Finn, and the further involvement with Kylo Ren, this video outlines everything in much more detail:

13 Serial Killers Who Inspired Some Seriously Sick Movies and TV Shows
When it comes to finding inspiration for scary movies, it turns out that the truth is not only stranger than fiction but also a hell of a lot grislier. Hollywood frequently turns to the world's most prolific serial killers for inspiration, feeding pop culture's fascination with these real-life villains. In addition to award-winning biopics like 2003's Monster, you might be surprised to discover that some of the most disturbing moments and characters on shows like American Horror Story actually went down in real life. Once you make your way through all of Netflix's serial killer documentaries, take a look at the many movies and TV shows they've inspired.
To Those Who Loved La La Land but Hated the Ending, Read This
La La Land is taking award season by storm, racking up tons of Oscar nominations, in addition to being the most romantic movie in years. But there seems to be a general consensus from even the most fervent of fans: the ending. (Obviously, spoilers ahead.)
At the end of the movie, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's characters don't end up together, a fact that, anecdotally, has caused pretty much everyone I know who's seen it to say something along the lines of: "I saw La La Land. I loved it. But the ending: WTF?!" It's a seemingly universal sentiment, and while there will probably never be a sequel to show the two leads getting back together, director Damien Chazelle's explanation might make you feel better - or at least might make you understand it more.
Speaking at TIFF back when the movie first premiered in September 2016, Chazelle was asked why Stone and Gosling's characters don't end up together. Here's what he had to say:
"Real life doesn't always live up to the dreams in the movies, but that, in a way, is a great subject for a movie. And that's kind of what drove me with this: making a movie that was definitely informed by these idealized visions that you get from the old Hollywood musicals, but one in which hopefully you have to question a little bit whether real life lives up and what the give and take has to be.
"I find movies where the lovers wind up not together more romantic."These are characters who - and every character in the movie to a certain extent - has to negotiate the balance between dreams and reality, as we all do. To me, it's trying to say something about that. I find movies where the lovers wind up not together more romantic. When they wind up together, it's like you don't know what's going to happen after the movie . . . but these two will always be a perfect pair for me."
4 Theories About Kylo Ren and Rey's "Strange Connection" in Star Wars
If you think the Force has awakened in the Star Wars universe, just wait until you catch wind of this. Recently, it seems the official Star Wars website made two seemingly tiny changes to the bios of Kylo Ren and Rey. On Kylo's side, it says, "A mysterious connection seemed to link the two." Meanwhile, on Rey's side, it says she was "captured by the dark side warrior Kylo Ren, with whom she shared a strange connection." Hold up. Strange? Mysterious? It's true, we had an inkling that there was more to their relationship than meets the eye, but maybe we're not going deep enough. So we came up with some theories.
1. They're Related
One of the most common theories about Rey's parents is that she's a Skywalker. Sure, it's obvious. But Rey does find Luke's lightsaber by sheer power of the Force. She shows obvious Force sensitivity and enhanced abilities out the gate. Then there's the fact that Kylo Ren sees the island Luke's on while reading Rey's mind! Kylo Ren is obviously a Skywalker: he's the son of Leia Organa. If the two are related, it's a crazy showdown of brother and sister, of Luke and Leia, and of the dark side and the light.
2. They're Destined For the Classic Skywalker/Palpatine Model
Another popular theory out there is that Rey is a descendant of Emperor Palpatine. This would set her and Kylo Ren up for a Star Wars face-off that occurs in every single trilogy: a Palpatine vs. a Skywalker. In the first trilogy (numerically), Anakin Skywalker faces off against Emperor Palpatine. In the second, Luke goes up against the same villain, who has since become even more evil. This would create a sort of destiny between the two names. Rey, a Palpatine, going against Kylo Ren, a Skywalker. What's more, the Palpatine bloodline has shifted to the light side, while a Skywalker has gone dark. Who knows how it could turn out?
3. They Mark the End of the Jedi and the Sith
In this new trilogy, there are no Jedi or Sith . . . yet. On the good side, we have Force-sensitive individuals like Maz Kanata and Lor San Tekka and Rey and even Finn. They all demonstrate Force skills in varying degrees, but none of them are Jedi knights. Kylo Ren, of course, is a member of the First Order, but neither he nor Snoke identifies as a Sith lord. Now that we know Episode VIII is called The Last Jedi, it seems we're coming to a real turning point. Regardless of who the last Jedi is, what if Rey and Kylo Ren represent the future of the galaxy? What if everything changes once they both harness their power? It's hard to say what this would mean, but it's certainly interesting to consider.
4. Their Connection Will Result in Insane Consequences
We know Kylo Ren is very troubled. It's clear his journey to the dark side has been tumultuous, and Han Solo very nearly draws him out of it. Rey, on the other hand, seems to have a darkness in her. There's that moment during her lightsaber duel with Kylo Ren, where she very nearly delivers a deadly blow and kills him. Furthermore, Kylo recognizes this darkness in her as well. He offers to train her! What if they switch spots? What if Kylo pulls Rey to the dark side just as he finds himself drawn to the light? What if all the heroes are actually villains and vice versa? It could change the whole trilogy as we know it.
The Last Jedi hits theaters on Dec. 15.

Rita Moreno paved the way for Latinas in entertainment 55 years ago. The Puerto Rican-born Hollywood trailblazer won best supporting actress at the Oscars in 1962 for her powerful (and frequently emulated) role as Anita in West Side Story, and as one of five Oscar-winning Latino actors - seriously, only five - she's still a huge influencer in both our community and the industry. (Maybe you've seen her as Rogelio De La Vega's mom, Liliana, on Jane the Virgin or as Lydia in Netflix's One Day at a Time?)
But perhaps the most endearing thing about her Oscars win was her acceptance speech - or lack thereof. In preparation for the 89th Academy Awards on Feb. 26, we unearthed the black-and-white clip of the groundbreaking moment in history, and it's a must see.

How to Make Homemade Glazed Doughnuts, According to Ree Drummond
Food Network recently shared a picture of Ree Drummond's glazed doughnuts and doughnut holes on Instagram, and the recipe for the homemade doughnuts, although elaborate, will inspire you to set aside your weekend for this project. The dough itself is yeasted, meaning it's a several-day process, so the wait times may be the most difficult part. You'll make the dough one day and let it rise for several hours in multiple increments. Ree swears by frying the doughnuts and doughnut holes in vegetable shortening. She says it helps crisp up the exterior without soaking too much into the dough. Once the doughnuts are fried, Ree coats them in a homemade glaze, made from powdered sugar, salt, vanilla extract, and water.
Though The Pioneer Woman only shows how to make glazed doughnuts, if you want, you can dip them in a chocolate glaze, coat the doughnuts in toasted coconut flakes, or top them with traditional frosting and rainbow sprinkles. Anything goes!
Merriam-Webster Roasted the White House After It Repeatedly Misspelled the Same Word
Pull up a chair, because Merriam-Webster is about to demonstrate yet another lesson in the art of throwing shade. After correcting grammatical errors from both Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump, the dictionary took to Twitter yet again to mock the White House's recent repeated misspelling of "attacker."
On Feb. 6, the White House released a list of 78 terror attacks as an attempt to criticize the media for allegedly underreporting them. In the list, the White House misspelled the word "attacker" 27 times to read "attaker."
In response, Merriam-Webster retweeted a picture of the obvious spelling error. It didn't end there: after someone asked the dictionary to define "attaker," Merriam-Webster unleashed some low-key shade in a tweet, shown below.

Did The Weeknd Just Dis Justin Bieber With His New Song? Fans Seem to Think So
The Weeknd dropped a new track titled "Some Way" with Toronto rapper Nav on Tuesday night, and while we definitely see this song being a hit, there's a chance some of the lyrics are a direct response to Justin Bieber's recent digs at him. The Weeknd has yet to publicly address Justin's remarks, but many fans seem to think that the song is a shot at the "Sorry" singer. In the song, The Weeknd sings, "Think your girl fell in love with me / She say my f*ck and my tongue game a remedy," while Nav raps, "Haters gonna say this sh*t is wack," seemingly referencing Justin's comments about The Weeknd's music.
The Weeknd is currently dating Selena Gomez (aka Justin's ex) and Justin has not been shy about voicing his dislike for the fellow Canadian. Shortly after Selena and The Weeknd were caught kissing outside of Giorgio Baldi restaurant in January, TMZ caught up with the "Sorry" singer in West Hollywood and asked him if he listens to The Weeknd's music, to which he responded, "Hell no, I can't listen to a Weeknd song! That sh*t's is wack." Then over Grammys weekend, Justin did an Instagram live video in which he jokingly said his favorite song at the moment was The Weeknd's "Starboy," before erupting into laughter. Your move, Justin.

Where You've Seen the Gorgeous Cast of Riverdale Before
If you're like us, your latest obsession lies in Riverdale, The CW's reimagining of the beloved Archie comics. Riverdale combines three things that made shows like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars major fanfare: love triangles, a murder (at least one for now), and a really, really good-looking cast.
And like many teen thrillers that have come before it, much of the cast was plucked out of obscurity. While some of the actors had a few credits to their name, many of them are getting their big break on the show - at least, that's the case with most of the students; you'll most definitely recognize the parents on this series, as almost all of them are TV veterans.
Keep reading to find out where you've seen the cast before.
If Adele Ever Wins an Emmy and a Tony, She'll Join a Rare and Impressive Hollywood Club
Winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, or a Tony is nice and all, but what if you win all four? Scoring an elusive EGOT is a feat that only 12 people in Hollywood have been able to pull off so far: Audrey Hepburn, Richard Rodgers, Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, John Gielgud, Jonathan Tunick, Marvin Hamlisch, Mel Brooks, Mike Nichols, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Lopez, and Scott Rudin. Could Adele be next? Maybe.
There are quite a few people, like Denzel Washington and Kate Winslet, who are close to taking home the so-called "grand slam" of show business, and Adele is one of them. Unless you've been living under a rock since 2009, you know she's made a habit of sweeping the Grammys every year she puts out an album (and sometimes even when she doesn't, in one case). So far she has 15 under her belt, as well as one Oscar for "Skyfall," her song on the James Bond film's soundtrack in 2014. If she can somehow win an Emmy and a Tony, she'll be lucky number 13 on the list.
Now the real question is: how likely is it that she'll be able to win an Emmy and a Tony? Adele hasn't shown any interest in acting so far (unless you count her recent role as "Crazy Woman at Jamba Juice"), but both award shows have categories that where her musical brilliance could shine. For instance, the Creative Arts Emmys has an outstanding original music and lyrics category, and we could totally see her going the route of Elton John one day and scoring a Tony Award-winning musical. Only time will tell, but if Adele has proved anything throughout her career, it's that there's nothing she (and her vocal chords) can't do.

Denzel Washington is a Hollywood icon. In addition to the many classic films he's starred in, he also has seven Oscar nominations under his belt, two wins, one beautiful wife, and four children. Many of the 62-year-old actor's roles have been extremely badass, giving him that whole sexy protector vibe (if he was your current boyfriend, your ex-boyfriend should be extremely nervous). While most people with a pulse can't get enough of him on the big screen, we also have a soft spot for him in real life. Denzel has always been attractive (that smile!), and we have 20 moments right here that prove that's not about to change.

It's even more impressive when you consider the fact that, while Gaga was hitting all these notes, she was running around the stadium and dancing. Is there anything she can't do?!

But have we refocused our negativity and self deprecation to what's on our plate? I'm personally trying to nip that in the bud, stat.
I've noticed myself and others adopting a mindset of "it's healthy . . . but not healthy enough." For instance, an açaí bowl is arguably a healthy breakfast, but you could find yourself saying "it's all sugar," or "there's not enough protein." Hello! It's natural sugar from fruit, it's not processed sugar and flour, and not every single thing you eat has to have protein.
Why are we in a competition with ourselves and the universe to out-healthy one another, so much so that we shame our otherwise healthy choices? "Mmmm that kale smoothie looks good but the almond milk is sweetened so it's basically a Snickers." The f*ck?? We really need to wake up from this.
This also applies to foods that aren't conventionally healthy, like eating a piece of pizza or having a cocktail; we shouldn't feel guilty or like we need to earn these indulgences. I'm not saying just eat whatever the f*ck you want - we should absolutely be conscious about our choices. Obesity is still a problem in our country, as is heart disease, sugar addiction, etc etc. But I am saying to acknowledge food as a choice, as fuel, and often as a means of pleasure and enjoyment - and that's OK! This is why we love the 80/20 approach to eating!
One of my favorite quotes about this idea was from a woman who I interviewed last year about her 100-pound weight-loss journey, who said, "Food is food and it can be used for fuel or pleasure, but it doesn't define my character." Here's why this is so important:
Your Relationship With Food
Constantly guilting yourself over food choices can spiral into something more dangerous than some off-handed comments like an eating disorder). What can start off as something lighthearted - even funny (trust me, self-deprecating humor is my specialty) - can turn into a truly negative relationship with food. As one recovering anorexic woman told POPSUGAR, "I innocently thought that I was just exercising and eating healthy but over time, I continued to take it to extremes."
The concept of "healthy" is relative to each person. To my lactose-intolerant friend, my Greek yogurt-based smoothie isn't healthy, but to me it's an excellent source of protein. There are no hard and fast rules or lines of what is or isn't "healthy," so by arbitrarily making up the rules, we subject ourselves to guilt, confusion, and negativity. Is a life of obsessively counting and restricting calories, second guessing choices, and feeling guilty and sad at every single meal time something you want to deal with? (hoping your answer is no, btw)
Your Impact on Others
What we say affects other people, too. Whether you like it or not, your words and actions impact those around you, and you might be more of an inspiration to your friends and family than you realize.
A few months ago I overheard some women in a Megaformer class saying "We can go get those margaritas now - we deserve them!" and my first reaction was girl, please! My second one was, is this really the language we've developed to communicate with other women?
At risk of sounding like a cheesy motivational cat poster (or a fake Gandhi quote), "Be the change you want to see in the world." Do you want your friends, workout buddies, coworkers, and family members to have a great, healthy relationship with food? Lead by example. If you're calling out your food as "not good enough" or "not healthy enough," you're giving the people around you a reason to second-guess themselves.
How We Fix It
Through my experience and bits of psychological research (including an interview with acclaimed psychologist, Dr. David Burns), I've identified these distorted thoughts that are cropping up - here's how I plan to destroy them so they never ever come back.
No food is "perfect" and as we mentioned, these "rules" are relative.
- Stop comparing. Have you ever ordered a burger at a lunch when your friend ordered a salad, and immediately regretted your choice or been embarrassed by it?
Don't blame someone's health problem or physical woes on what they're eating, because everyone's body is different, and also you kind of look like a dick when you do that.
Stop yourself in your tracks when you start to notice these negative food thoughts cropping up, or if you catch yourself saying them aloud to a friend. Soon enough, you'll have killed this habit before it even had a chance to form or take over your life. And the best part? You'll have a happier, healthier relationship with food. Mmmmm, food.

This Elementary School Teacher Gave Her Students the 1 Thing All Kids Need
One anonymous teacher did more than just welcome students on the first day of school; they set a tone of acceptance and support from the moment kids walked in.
As a powerful way to inspire children from the start, the Australian teacher made goodie bags for all of the year four students (kids ages 8 and 9), which each came with a meaningful note. The letter, which was shared on Bowen State School's Facebook page, explained the motivating meaning behind each treat in the bag.
"The eraser is to remind you that it is OK to make mistakes. We'll work and learn together, no matter what it takes," the note read. "The stickers mean we'll stick together and work hard as a team. . . . The bookmark is to show you that you always have a place. If you ever feel a little lost, we'll help you find your space." Kids also received a puzzle to show how the class fits together and is working towards a common theme, as well as Smarties candies to remind them how smart their teacher thinks they are.
Although this teacher's identity isn't publicly known, it's clear that these kiddos are incredibly lucky to be taught by such a thoughtful and welcoming individual.
Proof That Even Celebrities Totally Lose Their Cool Around Salt Bae
Since becoming an internet sensation, Nusret Gökce - commonly referred to as Salt Bae - has blessed several celebrities with his over-the-top seasoning skills. In early February, the chef cooked for Leonardo DiCaprio at his Nusr-Et Steakhouse in Dubai. Weeks later, he made an appearance at the 2017 Laureus World Sports Awards, where he met notable athletes like Simone Biles and Michael Phelps.
In an incredible video shared by Simone, Nusret carefully and extravagantly dropped a dash of salt on her food. Simone's caption read, "Got my food salted by the one and only." Prior to going viral, however, Nusret hosted a few famous faces at his restaurant - like Tommy Hilfiger, for example. Look ahead for pictures of Salt Bae and his many celebrity encounters.
This Girl Turned Hillary Clinton's Concession Speech Into a Song, and It's Damn Near Perfect
When Isolde Fair received an assignment in her music theory class, she rose to the occasion in the most beautiful and inspiring way. The project was to write a song based on Hillary Clinton's moving concession speech, and the result was a beautiful tune titled "To All the Little Girls," as an ode to one of Clinton's most memorable quotes from the speech.
In the four-minute video above, Isolde is joined by students at the Sol La Music Academy in Santa Monica to present her creation. Halfway through the video, young girls are shown holding up signs with powerful messages like "I want to create the future."
It looks like Clinton fell in love with this song as much as we did because the former secretary of state gave Isolde a well-deserved shoutout on Twitter.
Thanks to Isolde Fair & her classmates for this inspiring song. I'm with YOU. 👏👏👏✨

La La Land Isn't the Only Place You Can Hear Emma Stone Sing
Emma Stone has been gaining praise for her role in La La Land, but we were particularly blown away by her musical talent. Not only was Ryan Gosling really playing the piano, but Stone was really singing! Actually, the actress actually has an extensive music background, from auditioning to be in the Partridge Family to starring in Broadway's revival of Cabaret. If you've already tired out the soundtrack for the film, here's all the other places you can hear Stone's lovely voice.
What a Stranger at McDonald's Did For 1 Mom Desperate to Save Her Child's Life
After Cirila Munyon's seemingly healthy teen daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, this Arizona mom was determined to save her girl, no matter what it took.
Robin Schrader had no idea that she was sick until she went to the doctor for a required sports physical before joining her high school cheerleading team. Alarmed at how high the 15-year-old's blood pressure was, doctors sent her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis. This rare disease was causing Robin's immune system to attack her kidneys.
At that moment, her mom's search for a new organ to save her daughter began. "Right now her doctor has said she needs it ASAP, while she is still in good health," Cirila told KVOA.
At the time of her diagnosis, Robin's kidneys were only working at 14 percent, but she lost all organ function within four months. After watching her child spend hours a week on dialysis, Cirila began to share her message everywhere, including on the back of her car. A stranger at McDonald's saw her bold plea and posted a snapshot of the urgent request on Facebook.
John Drattlo asked for the family's permission before posting, but Cirila was more than happy for him to share the photo with the message, "Make this go viral and find this kid a kidney!" The snap quickly went viral and within the first few weeks more than 170 offers from potential donors poured in.
Cirila said that the influx of strangers' offers - coming from all over the country - to be tested are giving her family some much-needed hope and urges parents in similar situations to do exactly what she did. "Do not give up, whatever you do,"Cirila told CBS. "Even if it's something someone thinks is crazy."
