This Is What Solved My Extreme Bloating Problem That 4 Doctors Couldn't Figure Out

A lot of things changed when I moved to San Francisco. I was much colder. I bought my first real jacket. I tried Philz Coffee for the first time. I started a new job. And, out of nowhere, my stomach started ballooning arbitrarily throughout the week making me look three-to-six-months pregnant at any given moment, for no apparent reason.

Things that didn't change: my diet, my exercise routine (OK, I started doing a lot more SoulCycle), and my overall health. I wasn't eating more food or less healthy food, so I knew it wasn't weight gain . . . especially when my pregnant-looking belly would mysteriously disappear by morning, and I was back to a flat stomach. But sometime during the day, I'd eat a peach or go to a cardio workout, and BAM: back to bloat. Biiiig bloat. I would snap photos to send to my mom (as you'll see below) because I couldn't believe what was happening to me, and I was horrified.

For 11 months, I wasn't comfortable with my body. I couldn't wear fitted clothing (aka, ALL of my activewear), because I knew at some point, my lower abdomen would jet out, and anyone who didn't know me would assume I was with child. I've been so afraid to eat, because I knew that anything could trigger my stomach, from a piece of fruit to a sip of sports drink. Yet then there would be days when I said "eff it!" and ate Cinnamon Toast Crunch and milk, and nothing happened. It made absolutely no sense.

I've never felt more more ashamed of my appearance, or more uncomfortable in my own skin . . . and I'm even ashamed to admit that! My body simply didn't feel like mine. And the worst part was that it didn't seem like there was an explanation or end in sight.

I never intended for these photos to see the light of day, but this is what I looked like end-of-day versus the next morning. I know my room is a mess. This was truly only supposed to be for my mom (she's mad about the mess, too).

I saw so many doctors and went through so many labs; my initial appointment was to see if it was hormonal. It wasn't. I saw an OB-GYN. I had two ultrasounds. I tried the low-FODMAPS diet (it didn't go well). I had my blood tested for a thyroid imbalance. My doctors were stumped, and I was frustrated to the point of many angry tears.

"For 11 months, I wasn't comfortable with my body . . . I've never felt more more ashamed of my appearance."

Two glimmers of hope seemed to come at once: my doctor referred me to a phenomenal GI, and one of my close friends referred me to an acupuncturist and naturopathic doctor here in the city. Although I had been through so many appointments and tests already with no results, I tried to remain optimistic. And these were still two avenues I hadn't tried!

First up was my acupuncture visit with Dr. Magnolia Ng of Advance Health SF, and then my GI appointment with gastroenterologist, Dr. Daniel Conlin. Two very different doctors from very different backgrounds seemed to know the source immediately: stress. It was the first time anyone had brought up the idea that something mental could trigger such a strong physical reaction, but they both seemed certain. Stress was the one factor that did come into play when I moved. Long-distance move to a new city, new job, new everything equals one stressed out me. I didn't even notice because everything has been so go-go-go.

Dr. Conlin didn't cut any corners in his approach, and he didn't just write me off saying, "you're stressed, just calm down!" and send me on my way after collecting a copay. He tested my blood and breath for celiac, SIBO, h. pylori, IBD, and post-infection bacterial overgrowth (everything came back negative). He asked me to eliminate dairy, despite the fact that he didn't really think I was lactose intolerant. He went through so many avenues, but kept coming back to the idea that it was probably stress-induced. I asked him if I was a "freak case" or if he had seen this in other patients, and he said, "You're definitely not alone; I see this in many young women your age, typically high-achieving, A-type college grads who work here [in San Francisco] in some kind of fast-paced tech or startup company." It was like he read my bio. He knew. I knew. It was stress.

Exhibit B of the stress bloating and the next morning's mystical disappearance. I swear I'm not usually this messy.

What I appreciated most about Dr. Conlin was his approach to treatment. He said if it was a celiac or SIBO case, he'd have different recommendations, but for me, he thought acupuncture, charcoal tablets, ginger root, and ginger tea, and specifically Align probiotics would be helpful in my treatment (he noted that it's the only brand he recommends, so I went with it). His openness to natural treatment despite coming from a Western background increased my trust in him and made me more comfortable in my health journey.

It was hard to explain to family and friends that stress was causing arbitrary abdominal distention, so I wanted to learn more. Apparently, an influx of stress can upset the microbiome (the ecosystem of good and bad bacteria in your gut, which can influence nearly all areas of your health). I spoke with Amie Valpone, nutritionist and founder of TheHealthyApple.com, who gave me some incredible insight as to what has been happening in my body. "Having too much non-beneficial bacteria in your gut has been linked to many health issues such as heart disease, fibromyalgia, eczema, asthma, depression, cancer, autoimmunity, allergies, obesity, autism, and allergies," she said . . . and in my case, inexplicable abdominal distention.

"We are so caught up in our busy lives that we don't realize how stressed out we are - that's when the health issues start to appear out of nowhere."

"When our microbiome is out of balance from stress, we get an imbalance of non-beneficial bacteria such as yeasts, parasites, and bad bacteria that take over and make us feel bloated, tired, and bring along a host of unwanted symptoms that range from person to person."

She went on to say that "change in diet, travel, processed foods, and stress from work, our family, friends, and so forth," can trigger this imbalance, but "we are so caught up in our busy lives that we don't realize how stressed out we are - that's when the health issues start to appear out of nowhere." It was amazing to hear those words of affirmation, because that's exactly what I had experienced. It was totally out of nowhere, and I truly had been so caught up in my busy life.

My gut was off thanks to stress, which caused the inexplicable bloating (that couldn't be attributed to anything I was eating) and the mission now was to use different natural remedies together to restore balance and get me out of a place of stress (that's a work in progress, honestly). "The goal is to address the underlying root cause of why your gut is imbalanced in the first place, instead of covering up your symptoms with a Band-Aid approach," said Amie. "That's where food, stress, mind-body practices, and probiotics come into play."

Dr. Ng had an additional approach to pair with my acupuncture treatments for both stress and energy blockages in my abdomen: Chinese herbs. She prescribed and gave me a bottle of Mu Xiang Shun Qi Pian, or "BloatEase," to take three times a day. "Emotional upset such as frustrations or worry, overwork, and a constitutional or genetic weakness can make a person prone to digestive disorders," she told me. The herbs and the acupuncture were intended to set things right again. She also mentioned to me the importance of using both traditional Eastern medicine in combination with Western medicine - and my recovery has been a testament to that.

The combination of treatment has been absolutely life changing for me. The Chinese herbs, probiotics, and acupuncture treatment (along with continuing to eat a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and staying on my workout schedule) has helped restore my body to its natural shape. The bloating is going away, even though I still have to work on de-stressing. When it does happen, the bloating has decreased in size, severity, discomfort, and frequency, and I'm finally starting to feel comfortable with my body again.

What did I learn from all this? For one, Western and Eastern medicine aren't mutually exclusive, and in fact, when they're used together, they've got a symbiotic, 360 approach that can be even more effective than if either were used on their own.

I've also learned to advocate for my health. If you're not getting answers, don't give up. Make another appointment. Bug your doctor. Ask for another referral. Don't take no for an answer. The world of healthcare is freaking nuts, and if you don't advocate for yourself, no one else will. I got pretty lucky in the way that my doctors were really helpful and responsive when I pushed, but I still had to jump through a lot of hoops to get the treatment I needed. Don't be intimidated, don't give up, and most of all, don't stress. A solution is out there for you, too.

Woman Tells Her Husband She's Pregnant While in a Photo Booth and It's Adorable

Thought I'd share the way my wife told me she was pregnant ✌🏼 from pics

We've seen some pretty amazing pregnancy announcements, from wine label sonograms to this hilariously honest photo, but this one might be our favorite one yet. Reddit user Sikesmw shared how his wife told him she was pregnant in this series of photo booth pictures.

The first strip of photos features the couple making the funny faces you'd expect in a photo booth session. In the second strip, his wife takes out a pregnancy test and shows her husband that she's pregnant, leading to the final photo series in which they're celebrating. It's incredibly sweet and they both look thrilled to be expecting.

This isn't the first time the couple has used photo booths to document their reactions to big life moments. The Reddit user also shared this sweet photo of when he proposed to his wife in a photo booth. Several Reddit users have jokingly suggested that they should continue with this tradition, and she should give birth in a photo booth as well to complete the series.

Why Ryan Gosling Is Going to Win the Best Actor Oscar This Year

The award season tides might just be changing. Every year, there are clear favorites for Oscars, made pretty obvious after the Critic's Choice, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards all get handed out. About a month ago, if you'd asked us (or really, any Oscars odds-makers), we would have said that Casey Affleck was going to sweep the whole season and pick up best actor statues all the way to the Oscars. But the season has been more interesting than most, and now, we'd like to put out a theory that now has a lot of steam: Ryan Gosling will win the best actor Oscar for La La Land.

Here's why we think he has a very strong shot.

Image Source: Getty / Christopher Polk

Casey Affleck Lost the SAG Award

Denzel Washington won his first SAG Award for best actor for Fences this week, throwing our usual metric of "whoever gets the SAG Award, gets the Oscar" right off. As you can see, there's been very little variation on SAG winners who go on to win the Oscar in the best actor category, leaving room for some unpredictability at the Oscars. So, you say, why isn't this a story about why Washington is going to win the Oscar? Keep reading.

Gosling Won the Golden Globe

The Golden Globes split its best actor award into drama and musical/comedy, and of course, we watched Gosling take home the musical/comedy statue with a heartwarming speech. Affleck won the award for best actor in a drama that night, following his win in the same category at the Critics' Choice Awards. So far, Affleck still has the most best actor awards this season, but like we said, losing the SAG Award was a major hit to his momentum. And, for those keeping score at home, Washington has only won one major award this season so far.

Ryan Gosling Will Campaign

This is a major factor that we often forget about, unless you're an industry insider. As much as you'd like to think that Oscars go to the people who deserve them the most, for the best acting in the best film that year, that's just not what happens. There is an element of campaigning that nominees do to better their chances. We're not saying Gosling is going to go out and shake hands and hold babies, but his charm offensive has already begun. His Golden Globes speech about his family melted our collective hearts. His reaction to his Oscar nomination was the perfect amount of humble. He's America's boyfriend.

Contrast that with Affleck, who has been dogged by disturbing sexual assault allegations, which, prior to the SAG Awards, hadn't seemed to affect his award season streak. Given that SAG Awards are voted on by actors, and his fellow actors had already begun speaking out against Affleck's recognition, it could be possible that that was a factor in his loss. Whether the Academy will feel the same way is yet to be seen. Adding another black mark to Affleck's chances: his roasting of the same people who honored him at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards in early January. Funny, sure, but it didn't make him look grateful.

La La Land Is the Still the Award Season Favorite

Though La La Land was only honored once at the SAG Awards for Emma Stone's performance, it's still the most celebrated film of award season, having broken records for Golden Globe wins and tied records for Oscar nominations. Who's to say if La La Land is Gosling's best work yet, but he pulls his weight while arguably showing more range of talent than other nominees in that he's singing, dancing, playing the piano, and comedically and dramatically delivering. The movie should go on to win in most major categories on Oscar night, and one of those categories is very likely to be best actor.

Britax Voluntarily Recalls Over 700,000 Strollers Due to Fall Hazard

Britax is voluntarily recalling over 700,000 of its strollers due to a fall hazard posed when the stroller is used as a travel system with a car seat attached. Issued this month, the recall involves Britax's Click & Go receiver mounts on the B-Agile and BOB Motion strollers.

Customers have contacted Britax to report damaged Click & Go receiver mounts on their stroller's frame, "which can cause the attached car seat to disengage unexpectedly, posing a fall hazard to infants in the car seat." Infants could then sustain potential injuries due to the fall.

To see if your stroller is affected by the recall, please consult the below model numbers (found near the right rear wheel on single strollers and in the front middle underside of the frame on double strollers). If your model is listed, stop use immediately and call Britax at 1-844-227-0300 or email the company. Britax is also offering free repair kits for single strollers only.

A Little Girl Asked the CEO of Google For a Job - and He Actually Responded!

A 7-year-old girl recently sent Sundar Pichai a letter inquiring about a job and ended up receiving the sweetest letter from the Google CEO. While it's safe to say she did not receive a formal job offer, she may now have an in at the company . . . once she's finished with school, of course.

In her initial letter, Chloe spoke about her love of technology, computers, and robots before asking about Google's job listings. In his response, Sundar wrote, "I'm glad that you like computers and robots, and hope that you will continue to learn about technology. I think if you keep working hard and following your dreams, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to - from working at Google to swimming in the Olympics." Read the letter in its entirety, below.

Chloe's father later proudly shared the letter on Twitter and thanked Sundar. The tweet currently has over 600 retweets and nearly 1,000 "likes."

Vanessa Hudgens's Swimsuit Has a Sexy Detail You Shouldn't Miss

Vanessa Hudgens is on vacation in Mexico, posing in a beige one-piece with a straw hat and a drink in hand. At first glance, the suit blends perfectly with the sandy beach, which is why we almost missed the sexy low-cut side detail.

This subtle yet sultry swimsuit style was popular over the Summer, spotted on celebrities like Shay Mitchell and Bella Hadid. Judging from Vanessa's snap, the style won't fade out for 2017. In fact, we're obsessed with this particular one-piece and even found similar options to shop below.

Gigi Hadid Shows That Pat McGrath's Next '80s-Inspired Blue Eye Shadow Is Stunning

Pat McGrath is known for creating and revealing some of the biggest beauty trends at Fashion Week. So was the case when she launched one of the first holographic highlighters as well as glitter lips, testing both on the runways and then releasing products to DIY it at home later.

It happened again at the Miu Miu New York Fashion Week Fall 2017 show, where Pat did the makeup on major models like Gigi and Bella Hadid, giving them pigmented blue eye shadow matched with burgundy stained lips. We believe the edgy eye makeup is the next iteration of her Labs brand.

She captioned Instagram from backstage saying things like: "Coming Soon from Pat McGrath Labs" and "#StayTuned."

Pat, we're on standby!

These Love Actually Sequel Photos Reveal 2 Major Reunions!

Christmas came really early this month when news broke that a mini Love Actually reunion is happening. The classic holiday movie, which has spawned a loyal and dedicated fan base (and some haters) since its 2003 release, is getting a 10-minute-long short film in honor of Comic Relief's Red Nose Day telethon. The short will check in with the film's beloved characters 14 years after the events of the first movie, and on Thursday, we got the first sneak peek at what's to come.

A few of the film's original cast members, Liam Neeson (Daniel), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Sam), and Olivia Olson (Joanna), were spotting filming a few scenes in London. If you need a small refresher, Neeson played a man who recently lost his wife and was suddenly the sole caretaker of her young son, Sam. While he initially thought Sam's withdrawn behavior was due to his mother's death, it was actually mostly because he was hopelessly in love with his American classmate Joanna. The new set photos hint at a ton of possible things: Did Sam and Joanna end up together? Are Sam and Daniel still as close as ever? We already can't wait!

A Simple But Powerful Trick to Stop Emotional Eating

I cry-eat more often than I want to admit. Stressful day at work? Chinese takeout it is! Fight with the boyfriend? Yes, I'll have a second maragarita! I'm not alone in this. Many nutritionists say weight issues and food cravings are less about physical happenings in the body and are closely tied to our emotional state. But life isn't pretty all of the time, so the challenge becomes how to not turn to food when things get out of whack. Beyond practicing mindful eating as much as possible, Nikki Sharp, wellness coach and author of the 5-Day Real Food Detox, recommends that her clients give themselves a detox - of the emotional kind.

By pinpointing the reasons you're upset, Nikki says that you can find a better way to deal with the anger that doesn't have to involve turning to food. One of her go-to methods is a cleansing ritiual of sorts. Focus on what's bothering you and find a symbolic way to release it. "Write a letter and tear it up, throw a stone into the water, or visualize its dissipation into the air." The point of the exercise is to allow you time to reflect on the feeling and then let go of it. While it might sound a little on the new-agey side of things, Nikki says this simple act can be a "powerful way to free yourself emotionally," advice that can be used well beyond the dinner table.

This Photo of a Dying Star Will Make You Feel Utterly Small

If you're in the mood to feel particularly small and remember how big the universe is, look no further than a recent photo from NASA's Hubble telescope. The telescope recently captured an image of a dying star, and it's so damn cool.

Known as a Calabash Nebula, this star's death is an example of what happens to "low-mass stars" (like our sun) when they die. This particular phenomenon is also known as a "Rotten Egg Nebula," because it contains so much sulfur that it would smell like a rotten egg if we were near it.

This photo is not only incredible but also something that is barely ever photographed because it happens so fast. But it's not NASA's first time capturing something like this, as the Hubble telescope previously photographed the death of another star, 20,000 light years away.

Thank you, NASA, for reminding us just how small we really are in the grand scheme of the entire universe.

Selena Gomez's New Song Has to Be About Justin Bieber - Right?

Selena Gomez is back. After taking a mental health hiatus following the completion of her Revival tour, Selena just released a brand-new song with Kygo titled "It Ain't Me."

While the song is certainly catchy, it's the lyrics that have people talking as they appear to directly reference her relationship with Justin Bieber. Case in point: one verse states, "I had a dream we were back to seventeen / Summer nights and the liberties / Never growing up / I'll take with me the polaroids and the memories / But you know I'm gonna leave behind the worst of us." In the reprise, Selena sings, "Who's waking up to drive you home when you're drunk and all alone? / Who's gonna walk you through the dark side of the morning? / It ain't me." Coincidentally, Selena's rumored boyfriend, The Weeknd, also recently released a song that appears to dis Justin.

New Research Shows Teachers Could Be the Reason For the Gender Gap in STEM Fields

There's no denying that women are notably underrepresented in all STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. But new research from Accenture suggests this gender-based discrepancy may pertain to teachers more than the girls themselves.

In a survey of young people and adults in Ireland, a whopping 57 percent of teachers admitted to making subconscious stereotypes about girls and boys related to STEM subjects. These teachers confessed to encouraging girls to chase after more "girl career paths," such as nursing or teaching. Teachers who responded to the survey also noted that reasons for the lack of girls in STEM fields include that "girls are more influenced by their peers than boys" and a general perception that science-based careers are "a boys' thing" that girls may not succeed in.

Although we can't solely blame teachers for the lack of girls' participation in STEM-related activities, parents can definitely do their part by stepping in to nurture those skills from a young age. Thanks to the plethora of genius STEM toys out there, your young gal could be on the path to an engineering degree in no time.

Karlie Kloss Apologizes For That Controversial Photoshoot in Vogue

After photos circulated of Karlie Kloss's spread in Vogue's March 2017 issue, the model and magazine came under intense scrutiny. The editorial, entitled "Spirited Away," featured photos of Karlie dressed in kimonos with Geisha-inspired makeup and wigs shot at Isa-Shima National Park in Japan. The theme of the issue is diversity.

Following online criticism accusing Karlie and the magazine of "yellowface," the publication removed the photos from the website, and Karlie posted an apology on Twitter:

Chinese model Liu Wen and black model Imaan Hammam, each only appeared in one photo in the diversity-themed issue.

Your Focus Won't Be on Kendall Jenner's or Bella Hadid's Outfits, but on the Bags in Their Hands

As much as we love seeing photos of the runway and street style, it's the more candid, BTS snaps that we can all relate to. Case in point: Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner ordering McDonald's after walking in the Anna Sui Fall '17 show. The two models wore their off-duty looks - Bella in a striped sweater and denim skirt; Kendall in a t-shirt, jeans, and furry coat - as they ordered nuggets and fries to go. Bella seemed pretty happy with her decision, sharing a quick snap on her Instagram story. Like the rest of us, she gets rightfully excited over McDonald's fries, because they're the best.

Both Kendall and Bella had a busy Fashion Week walking in shows like Alexander Wang, La Perla, and Michael Kors. At the end of it all, we don't blame them, we all need a little comfort food. (Sometimes, you just need a cheeseburger to make you feel sane again.) The two girls even left their postshow makeup on during the food run, as if to say "who cares?" Because, as glamorous as they appear on the runway, when the job's done, they're just normal people too (and keeping your makeup on when you're feeling lazy and hungry is about as real as it gets).

Blake Lively and Sister Robyn Have a Case of the Giggles While Walking Through NYC

Blake Lively and sister Robyn Lively have been having a whirlwind adventure in NYC this week. After celebrating Galentine's Day with their mom at a L'Oréal event and attending the Michael Kors runway show hand in hand for New York Fashion Week, the two were photographed walking through the city together on Wednesday. Although they looked absolutely gorgeous (as usual), what we really want to know is what had them cracking up. Did they just read one of Ryan Reynolds's hilarious tweets, perhaps? Or maybe one of the photographers made a Teen Witch joke? Either way, we can't get enough of how adorable they are.

Mom Makes Precious Onesies For Babies Conceived Through IVF (That You Can Buy!)

If you or a friend have gone through IVF, you know firsthand the struggles and pain that can accompany the journey - but also the incredible feeling that comes with successfully becoming pregnant and giving birth to a miracle baby. When Emma Wehrman's friend Kimberly finally got pregnant with her miracle baby after a long and trying IVF journey, Emma wanted to celebrate that with an adorable gift.

Emma created three sweet (and kind of funny) onesies for Kimberly's baby with the sayings "Made With Love and Science," "I Survived the Ice Age," and "The Little Embryo That Could." Although the onesies were designed for Kimberly's baby, because Emma has an Etsy shop full of personalized and handmade goods - SewCutebyEmma - she decided to spread the love and list the onesies for others to purchase for an IVF baby in their own life.

Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Working With Zoë Kravitz After Almost Marrying Her Father

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have the kind of marriage that most people only dream of, but before she met the Australian country crooner, she was engaged to rockstar Lenny Kravitz. They dated briefly in 2003 after Nicole split from ex-husband Tom Cruise in 2001, and although many speculated they'd gotten engaged, neither party ever confirmed it until now. In an interview with The Edit, she opened up about what it was like to reconnect with Big Little Lies costar Zoë Kravitz while working on the HBO drama, given their connection through Lenny. "Well, I knew Zoë because I was engaged to her father," she revealed. "It's all in the family! I love Lenny; he's a great guy."

Nicole has rarely spoken of her relationship with the "Are You Gonna Go My Way" singer or their rumored engagement, but in 2007 she told Vanity Fair that the reason they never made it down the aisle was because it "just wasn't right. I wasn't ready. We weren't ready." On the bright side, it looks like Nicole and Lenny had a very amicable split, since she and Keith posed for a few cute photos with him at the CMT Awards in 2013, and Nicole and Zoë appear to be quite close.

The Pointer Finger Is the New Accent Nail That Everyone Will Be Wearing Next Fall

Just when you thought nail art might be waning, New York Fashion Week Fall 2017 has brought it back with a vengeance. We're only halfway through Fashion Week, and already we've seen nails featuring geometric shapes, negative space, and layered colors.

Perhaps one of our favorite looks so far is the pointer finger accent nail designed by Jin Soon for Tibi. At the show, models rocked a bright color on just the pointer finger nail. To recap: the ring finger has traditionally been the accent finger of choice.

"Tibi's collection was inspired by menswear – very clean and simple with unexpected details," says Jin Soon Choi of Jin Soon. "She used a lot of 1980s pop colors in the clothing, so we used that pop color on the models' nails. We didn't want to put those pop colors on every single nail because that's too predictable, so we decided to do only one finger."

Fortunately, you don't have to be a Picasso to pull this look chic look off. To re-create, apply a clear base on all your nails. Then, on the pointer finger, choose a bright hue a la the '80s.

Models at Tibi wore one of the following shades from the Jin Soon line: Heirloom, Pop Orange, Charme, Hope, or Cool Blue ($18, jinsoon.com).

If Anyone Could Start a New Hat Trend, It's Cindy Crawford's Daughter

The first thing you might notice upon seeing Cindy Crawford shopping with Kaia Gerber, is, well, Kaia's furry pink coat. It's hard to miss. But zoom in closer and you'll recognize the mother-daughter duo's stunning similarities, like that perfectly flowing brown hair. Though it appears it was a hat day for Kaia, who opted to try out the newsboy cap right in the middle of fashion week. There's no better time, really, to experiment with a new trend.

It's one that supermodel Bella Hadid's a fan of - she included the same style in her Chrome Hearts collection. But Kaia makes the hat all her own, accenting the piece with '90s essentials like leather leggings and combat boots. Scroll for a closer look, and see how Bella wears her own newsboy cap too. By then you should be plenty ready to shop for your own and try it on for size.

This Mom Didn't Let Airport Security Win When They Forced Her to Dump Her Breast Milk

Before leaving for a work trip to Singapore, Shelby Carroll researched the rules and regulations for bringing breast milk through airport security. This new mom from New York was going to be leaving her 6-month-old baby home for a week and wanted to make sure that she could continue pumping without any issues.

Things went smoothly on her flight from Newark, NJ, to Singapore. Although her company paid to ship her milk pumped during her stay in temperature-controlled containers, she still planned to pump during her commute back home. The returning leg was supposed to be even easier because of different international airline regulations that would allow her to store her pumped milk in the plane's refrigerator.

She went through security in Singapore with breast milk that she had pumped that morning, a cooler, and a bag of supplies without any issues. However, after landing in Tokyo for a layover, she was forced to go through another round of security before boarding her connection home. This time, her supplies were not only questioned, but after a prolonged discussion, Shelby was forced to dump out all of her milk that had been pumped throughout the day.

"They looked at me like I was crazy - like why would you have breast milk? And they said, 'So then where's your baby?'" Shelby told POPSUGAR Moms. She quickly explained that her baby was at home and even whipped out a photo of Cruise, but the airport security members still didn't know what to make of her cooler of milk.

"Their English wasn't very good, so they kept asking where the baby was and were clearly very confused around this concept of why would a mom still have milk with her if the baby's not with her," Shelby said. "It's like they don't understand this working-mom concept and the importance of bringing milk back to the baby."

According to Shelby, it seemed like the airport employees she was dealing with had never run into a mom trying to transport breast milk before, and after multiple conversations with both security and the airline, Shelby was ultimately forced to empty out her containers. "It was hard to be the one to have to dump it out and I hate to admit this, but I tried to make a little spill as I poured it into the bin so it made a bit of a mess as I poured it," she said with a laugh. "And when I turned back, I saw them cleaning it up a little bit, and I thought to myself, 'Ha ha!'"

Well played, mama!

Bella Hadid's Topless Shoot Will Remind You of a Very Iconic '90s Ad

Calvin Klein has rolled out a whole handful of iconic ads, but when we think of a supermodel in her briefs, we automatically picture Kate Moss. In 1992, she went topless in a pair of belted high-waisted denim, and the following year she joined actor Mark Wahlberg in just her underwear.

Bella Hadid blatantly followed suit when she posed for Mario Sorrenti for V Magazine. While Bella's photos are decidedly sexier thanks to edgy jewelry and tight black separates, Bella masters the soft facial expression, and she exudes confidence, even while stripping down. 12 Empowering Quotes Spoken by Truly Badass Latinas

At the 2015 Golden Globes, actress Gina Rodriguez left us all in tears and nodding our heads in agreement. Her speech had touched on the message of encouragement we use ourselves while looking in the mirror every morning, the one we turn to when championing our friends and their dreams - "This award is so much more than myself; it represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes. . . . Today is going to be a great day. I can and I will." So much yes!

That's the great thing that happens when Latinas in the spotlight use their platform to celebrate their successes and determination (and why we need more representation). These 12 quotes spoken by badass women in government positions and Hollywood will carry you through any hard day when self-doubt and the world get to ya. Let this be a reminder of all that is possible!

Matt Damon Pokes Fun at BFF George Clooney's Pregnancy Announcement

George and Amal Clooney announced last week that they're expecting twins, and few of the Money Monster's friends have been as supportive of the exciting news that Matt Damon. While on the red carpet recently, he said he "almost started crying" when George told him, but during his Thursday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he took the opportunity to poke fun at the fact George and Amal are having twins. "Well he said to me, 'You have four,' and I said yeah, but not at once!" he joked. "I don't know how anybody does twins. Those sleepless nights, and then there's two of them? There's just no way. We'll see what happens to him." We're sure George, 55, and his 39-year-old wife - a highly accomplished human rights lawyer - will figure it out.

Olivia Munn's Baywatch Swimsuit Comes With a Personal Touch

Olivia Munn had something to say for her first time playing beer pong. The star geared up for the game with an appropriately labeled one-piece swimsuit that read, "Ride or Die." We're assuming that meant she was ready to win with a partner by her side, though it could also be a total coincidence that the swimsuit happened to match the scene.

The graphic swimsuit is one we've seen on plenty of celebs, such as Hailey Baldwin and Kourtney Kardashian. It looks like last Summer's It piece will stick around for this year too. Though we hope Olivia won the game, in terms of her swim style, there is no match. She's the clear victor.

These Crocheted Octopuses Are Being Used to Comfort Preemie Babies, and They're Amazing

Incubators can be extremely scary and lonely, but this hospital has figured out an unexpected way to comfort premature babies as they learn to live and breathe on their own. The Poole Hospital in Dorset, England, is offering all babies in the NICU these crocheted octopuses to help with their breathing. You're probably wondering how an octopus could calm a newborn, but the reasoning surprisingly makes perfect sense.

"One of the nurses brought in the octopus and explained about the idea," said a mother whose premature twin girls are currently in the hospital. "The girls absolutely love them. When they are asleep they hold onto the tentacles tightly. Normally they would be in the womb and would play with the umbilical cord so the octopuses make them feel grounded and safe. They really are beautiful."

The idea for these magical octopuses came from research in Denmark and is now being implemented in hospitals all over. The Poole Hospital shared online that the calming effect of the crocheted toy "leads to better breathing and more regular heartbeats as well as higher levels of oxygen in their blood." With babies holding on to these cuddly creatures, they can pull on the tentacles instead of on the tubes and monitors.

The Poole Hospital is asking for all skilled crocheters to help out by making these soothing toys and donating to the maternity unit. The exact pattern can be found here, but it explains that the tentacles cannot be more than 22 centimeters long and they must be made from 100 percent cotton.

We love that these simple sea creatures are helping soothe premature babies all over the world.

Ryan Murphy Reveals the Theme of American Horror Story Season 7: the Election?!

The theme of each season of American Horror Story is usually teased out over the course of a few months, but creator Ryan Murphy was happy to reveal the season seven theme a little early on Wednesday night's episode of Watch What Happens Live! "I don't have a title, but the season that we begin shooting in June is going to be about the election that we just went through," he told host Andy Cohen. "I think that will be interesting for a lot of people." So does that mean one of Murphy's small pool of favorite actors will appear as Donald Trump? "Maybe," he said.

In January, Murphy told reporters at a TCA press event that he had wanted to let fans in on the theme much earlier than expected. "I think maybe we'll release some of it earlier than we did," he said. "But I just started writing it, I haven't even cast it yet - except for Sarah [Paulson] and Evan [Peters]. It's a modern-day story. That's all I can say." At this point only Paulson and Peters have been confirmed for season seven, so we'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out when the show returns in Fall 2017.

Katy Perry Is Launching New CoverGirl Makeup Inspired by Mermaids!

Katy Perry was one of the original mermaids of Hollywood, wearing a bevy of rainbow hair and beauty looks before they became the Instagram norm. She's bringing her enthusiasm for the mythical sea creatures into 2017 by creating a mermaid-inspired line with CoverGirl.

While Katy has been the face of CoverGirl for years, this is the second time she's teamed up with the brand to design products (the first happened last Summer). And POPSUGAR has an exclusive first reveal of the details for the new launches.

Expect four new eyeliners (two debuting this Spring, two launching in Summer), four lipsticks, and two shadow-and-highlighter duos, dropping in stores in April and online at covergirl.com in early March.

"In the next evolution of my Katy Kat line with CoverGirl, I was inspired by Spring's upcoming mermaid and pearlescent hues," Katy exclusively told POPSUGAR via email. "There are new fun and cheerful colors ranging from peachy Apricat to a Bluetiful lip, shimmery highlighters in rose and gold, and a pop of Whispurr white or Purmaid green to line your eyes. If you're more classic but still want some fun, I put glitter in the black liners. You'll make Ariel jealous, and look better than a shimmering Easter basket when you're done."

We also have intel that Katy will be rocking her new makeup for the Grammys red carpet tonight (stay tuned for more on that later!).

Keep reading to see images of the Limited Edition Katy Kat Pearl collection, as well as a behind-the-scenes image from the campaign.

Also, head to walgreens.com, where there will be a 48-hour flash sale while supplies last.

Miley Cyrus Will Win You Over With Her Wedding Dress

I don't know when or if Miley Cyrus is getting married. Maybe she doesn't even know. But in my imaginary world, she walks down the aisle in a pretty spectacular wedding dress. You see, ever since I was young, I looked at Miley as someone who represented versatility. She played two different characters on Hannah Montana, and my younger sister plastered posters of Miley all over her walls, some in which she was dressed up like Hannah, others in which she was just herself, in jeans and a three-quarter-sleeved tee. But even when she was just being Miley, the actress and singer looked unique and a little bit quirky.

She's gone through many stages, but there has never been a time when Miley's paid attention to trends. During her rise to fame, she wore flares and cowboy boots, maybe because they were representative of where she came from: Franklin, TN. Post-breakup with Liam Hemsworth (the two have recently rekindled their relationship), Miley kind of went HAM with her wardrobe. And I liked it. What she wore, or didn't wear, was all a part of her personal revolution.

Miley's style at this point could basically be described as costume like. She dressed as a twerking teddy bear and supported LGBT rights in rainbows and big, furry coats. Then, at the 2015 Met Gala, the industry's elite gathered on the red carpet, but Miley stood alone in a cutout Alexander Wang gown. It ended up on some "worst dressed" lists, but I think it was my favorite outfit of the night. It didn't seem like Miley was trying to appear sexy or edgy but just to look like herself.

So now, as outsiders speculate whether Miley and Liam are engaged, I can't help but to imagine her would-be bridal look. I doubt Miley Cyrus's wedding dress will be all white. It might be neon, a mix of colors, or come with an inflatable skirt. Miley might not wear a wedding dress at all, should she get married. Maybe she'll go naked. She recently revealed on the Today show that she prefers to stay out of the fashion conversation: "I don't want people to talk about what I'm wearing. That's usually why I don't wear too much," she said.

One thing's for sure: if Miley Cyrus gets married, her look won't include a ballgown so glamorous, everyone focuses on the pretty (or crazy!) details. They won't be talking about The Dress, because god knows it won't be wearing her. It'll be all about Miley. Read on to see why we know Miley will hit it out of the park on her special day.
