Why Disney's "Exclusively Gay Moment" Doesn't Deliver at All

Warning: this post contains implied homosexual spoilers.

Recently, news broke that the new live-action Beauty and the Beast would feature its first openly gay character. The film's director, Bill Condon, confirmed the info in Attitude's April issue: "LeFou [Josh Gad] is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston [Luke Evans] and on another day wants to kiss Gaston . . . [it] has its payoff at the end, which I don't want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie." While the announcement led to inevitable backlash from some, others called into question this claim that LeFou would be Disney's "first" openly gay character. Let me tell you, after seeing the film, the skepticism was well placed. In fact, not only is LeFou decidedly not an openly gay Disney character, but the "exclusively gay moment" hardly earns that distinction.

Before we dive into the minutiae of the problem, let me explain how this "exclusively gay moment" goes down. The first thing the film attempts to do is establish that LeFou is attracted to men. The musical number "Gaston" does the bulk of the legwork here, giving LeFou effeminate dance moves and mannerisms. At one point, he hugs Gaston a little too tightly for a little too long and asks, "Too much?" Finally, at the end of the song, Gaston asks why LeFou hasn't been snatched up by a woman, he says, "I've been told I'm . . . clingy." Which seems like a non sequitur.

The filmmakers felt the need to introduce a second gay character, but who? After all, Gaston is an unattainable heterosexual man who would never in a million years return LeFou's obvious affection. This means his only option is another person in the town: Stanley, one of the bar patrons that LeFou mentions by name while singing. Stanley is already clearly designated as a "gay" character in the most shallow sense. He's better looking than all the other patrons, his hair is perfectly coiffed, and he's immaculately dressed, complete with a neck scarf flourish.

Hm, which one of these men could Stanley be?

To further "confirm" Stanley's sexuality, we get another moment during the epic fight scene at the end when the townspeople descend on the castle and clash with all the enchanted furniture. Madame de Garderobe, the opera singer who has transformed into a wardrobe, attacks the same three men by covering them in an avalanche of clothing, ribbon, and wigs. As a gag, the trio is suddenly glammed up in flawless makeup and full ballgowns. While two of them men are upset by the drag, Stanley is visibly thrilled, so much so that he strikes a sassy pose. Madame Garderobe encourages him to go forth and proudly be himself, in so many words. Stanley trots gleefully down the stairs and exits the castle.

So when does our "exclusively gay moment" happen? At the very end, there's a ball to celebrate the "happily ever after" of Belle and her prince. We can see LeFou has a female dance partner on the dance floor, but everyone switches and he winds up dancing with Stanley. The two look at each other, for a beat, and then we cut to another couple. That's it. Are you sensing any problems here? Allow me to make a few statements:

  1. Dressing well and styling your hair does not make you gay.
  2. Wearing women's clothes does not make you gay.
  3. Enjoying drag culture does not make you gay.
  4. Dancing with someone of the same gender at a party does not make you gay.
  5. Dancing with someone of the same gender at a party is not a "gay moment."

The issue is that Disney believes these are proper ways to establish sexuality and romance between characters. In reality, an individual's homosexuality is not confirmed unless they explicitly mention their romantic attraction to individuals of the same gender. Before you suggest there's no place for something like this in a Disney movie, consider how freely Gaston voices his attraction to Belle. Why doesn't LeFou ever admit he's attracted to Stanley, or vice versa? Are they even attracted to each other, or are they just shoved together because they're both gay? Why, when Gaston asks about his experience with women, doesn't he somehow suggest he's never been romantically inclined toward them? Why couldn't LeFou and Stanley peck on the lips or say something undeniably gay in their "exclusively gay moment" together?

In reality, Disney has left the moment and the characters' sexual identities buried in the subtext. And this is not groundbreaking representation for the LGBTQ community. In fact, as the internet has duly noted, there are plenty of implicitly gay characters in Disney history. Judging by how groundbreaking they thought this whole ordeal would be, though, we're quite far from a Disney character who exclaims, "I'm gay!" and kisses another same-gendered Disney character. Strap in, it's going to be quite a while before our gay "happily ever after."

How 1 Simple Photo of Nail Polish Proves a Powerful Point About Coparenting

Coparenting with an ex can be nasty, competitive, and difficult at times, but one set of parents is proving that at the end of the day, your love for your children is more important than any resentment you have toward your ex.

After Danielle Gorner's daughter told her mom about her nail polish collection at her dad's house, Danielle had an epiphany about coparenting and her daughter's happiness. Her story was recently shared on the popular Love What Matters Facebook page, where a simple text exchange is melting the hearts of families all over.

"Growing up without your parents together is hard, but if those parents can work everyday together and separately to make their child's future a good one, then you've done your best," Danielle wrote. "We may not have the picture perfect life, but everything we do is for her. Sometimes it's easy to forget that and you can get wrapped up in trying to be 'right' all the time. Co-parenting is hard. But then you have realizations."

The realization for Danielle? Nail polish.

"Yesterday, my daughter told me I NEED to buy more nail-polish like daddy has at his house," she explained. "So out of curiosity and to check out my nail polish competition, I asked him what he uses. He replied back with a picture that melted my heart. Fourteen polishes. Lined up for her to pick which one she wants. Even apart we can still make sure she feels loved, happy, and complete."

Danielle's story can help set an example for other coparents that no matter what, the love for their daughter is bigger than any drama between the two of them. It's also really commendable that Danielle recognizes what an amazing father her ex is - their daughter is very lucky!

Nike Pro Hijab: Coming Spring 2018

To our hijabi fitness fanatics - we have some ultraexciting news for you. While it may have been difficult in the past to find stylish and functional hijabi activewear (or really, any hijabi activewear!), Nike is making things a little easier for you. Coming in Spring 2018: the first ever Nike Pro Hijab, ideal for badass Muslim athletes just like you.

In a press release, Nike said this design process has been a year in the making, and the product is already being worn by figure skater Zahra Lari and Nike+ Run Club Coach Manal Rostom.

Some more specs of the product itself: it has a "pull-on design, constructed from durable single-layer Nike Pro power mesh . . . Nike's most breathable fabric." Another bonus? It's super breathable but still opaque (a hijab requirement). See ya later, sweat. It's also totally customizable based on your fit and activity. "The mesh is also stretchy, so when combined with an elastic binding it allows for a personalized fit that adapts to both the wearer's head and her sport. Ice skating, for example requires a tighter fit for twirling."

"Top-flight athletes have illuminated performance problems associated with wearing a traditional hijab during competition," Nike said. It tested the hijab prototype on "everyday athletes from around the Middle East, including runners and cyclists."

Shirin Gerami, the first Iranian woman to compete in an Ironman competition, previously told NPR, "I am quite certain that with the right set of skills and knowledge, we can make clothes that won't hinder performance whatsoever." Gerami, who does not usually wear a hijab, did so to comply with Iran's regulations for female athletes, as well as to inspire more women to participate in sports. She worked tirelessly with athletic brands to create clothing specifically for her Ironman Championship race in Kona last year.

Nike said its mission is to "inspire even more women and girls in the [Middle East] region who still face barriers and limited access to sport: Fewer than one in seven girls participate in locally recommended sport activities for 60 minutes or more."

Now, with this product made specifically for hijabi women, coming from arguably the largest brand in sports apparel, we anticipate even more doors will be opened and more women will feel more inspired and empowered than ever.

This Seemingly Silly Video of "Things Guys Don't Talk About" Has a Powerful Ending

The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people commit suicide every year, leaving millions of others affected in some way as a result. Of those people, the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention reports that the victims of suicide are four times more likely to be males.

In a powerful video that's part of its "Tough to Talk" campaign, Childline, a free, private, and confidential service that seeks to help anyone under 19 in the UK with any issue they're going through, looks into a struggling teen's life. At first, the boy seems like a totally normal teenager as he eats peanut butter straight out of the jar, sprays day-old underwear to wear for a second time, and dances in front of the mirror to rap music.

It isn't until he's playing video games with a friend that anything seems remotely wrong. "Bro, just chill man," his friend says over a headset as they play. "I will smash you up," the boy shown responds. Throughout the rest of the clip, the boy's struggle becomes more apparent as he yells at himself in a mirror to "shut up," agonizes over a selfie on his phone, and submerges himself fully in his bathtub.

He then attempts to text a friend for help, typing: "Mate, I know this is weird, but I'm having a real crap time at the moment. Don't know what to do. Feel like everyone would be better off if I . . . " However, he deletes the message and continues to suffer in silence, until he chooses to google "suicidal thoughts" and finds Childline's support page offering to help.

"There are lots of things guys don't talk about, but if you're having suicidal thoughts, it's important to tell someone," the video's caption reads. "It can be tough to talk, but you're not alone and we can help you get through it."

If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, reach out to Suicide.org for information and hotline numbers.

The Secret to the Cake of Your Dreams Lies in a Mix

Many cakes are better made from scratch - chocolate, angel food, and carrot for starters - but when it comes to yellow cake and Funfetti, we're proudly on team boxed cake mix. We're not sure what it is (some sort of magic dust, perhaps), but it just tastes right. That being said, there are a few things that can be done to make it taste even better.

First off, this is going to be controversial - but skip the Funfetti cake mix. Instead pick up a box of yellow cake mix (it's richer in flavor than Funfetti's white cake base) and a big container of rainbow sprinkles; you're going to make your own Funfetti! Don't even think about tossing a tub of store-bought frosting into your cart (sorry, but no - shortening-based frosting is just wrong).

Mix up the cake mix according to the box's instructions (in this case, we added 1 cup water, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, and 3 eggs), and then fold in a whopping 3/4 cup rainbow sprinkles (don't overmix, or the sprinkles' color can bleed). Bake the cake according to the box's instructions - we're partial to a good, old-fashioned sheet cake, for ease, but you do you - and let cool completely.

Meanwhile, it's time to make the frosting of your dreams. This is not the time for a swiss meringue buttercream, which is too airy, light, and, frankly, refined for this application. Rather, we're going for a dense, salty-sweet, butter-rich recipe that's like tub frosting but 100 percent tastier (and made with far less scary ingredients). Follow this salted buttercream recipe, scaling back all of the ingredients by half.

Finally, ice your cake, blanket it with a ludicrous amount of rainbow sprinkles, and decorate with the cutest candles you can find. On the hunt for candles? We've had the best luck at suburban Target and Safeway stores; Amazon also has some cute options.

Want to take your boxed-cake creations to the next level? Try one of these clever recipes that also start with a mix.

6 Signs Your Bottle of Wine's Gone Bad

Not all wine is ideal for storing. If it's been in contact with air for too long or has a tainted cork, the liquid inside has turned and should not be consumed. Here are a handful of telltale signs that might indicate a good wine has gone bad.

  • The smell is off. If a wine's aroma is moldy or resembles a musty basement, wet cardboard, or vinegar, it's turned. A heavy raisin smell is another bad signal.
  • The red wine tastes sweet. If the bottle of red wine has the aroma of Port or tastes like dessert wine (even though it is neither of those two things), it has been overexposed to heat, and is therefore undrinkable.
  • The cork is pushed out slightly from the bottle. That's a sign the wine has overheated and expanded within the bottle.
  • The wine is a brownish color. A brown hue in red wine demonstrates that the liquid is past its prime. White wines that have darkened to a deep yellow or brownish straw color are usually oxidized.
  • You detect astringent or chemically flavors. Wine that lacks fruit, is raspy, too astringent, or has a paint-thinner taste is usually bad.
  • It tastes fizzy, but it's not a sparkling wine. A still wine that is fizzy or effervescent has undergone a second fermentation after the bottling and shouldn't be enjoyed.

One last word of advice: Always smell and examine the actual liquid. Although the term "corked" commonly refers to tainted wine, inspecting the cork alone will not determine if the wine has gone bad. Use your other senses. Have you ever had an undrinkable bottle of wine? How did you know it was questionable?

This Is Us Season 2: Everything We Already Know

Your weekly cryfest, This Is Us, is also one of the hottest new TV shows. So hot, in fact, that it got renewed for not one but two seasons back in January, a feat basically unheard of in network TV. And the only thing sadder than the plot twists of this show is the fact that we only have a couple more weeks (!) of new episodes before the hiatus. Lucky for us, we already have a bit of info about what we can expect next Fall.

There Are More Family Dynamics to Explore

Like previous beloved family drama before it, Parenthood (which ran for six seasons), there are nearly endless stories you can tell about a family. Obviously we'll see more Pearson family dynamics explored in season two, and star Justin Hartley intimated to us that the show might explore Randall and Rebecca's relationship more in season two.

The Episode Count

There will be 18 episodes of season two, and the same number for season three. Creator Dan Fogelman said that the seasons will also be split into two arcs before and after the holidays, like season one.

William Will Still Be Part of the Show

In one of the saddest moments of a very sad season, William succumbs to his illness. That would seem like it would close the door on cast member Ron Cephas Jones being on the show anymore, but it didn't. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly right after William's death episode, Jones said that he would be back in season two in some way. He compared his resurfacing to the fact that Jack is dead in present day, but Milo Ventimiglia is a series regular. "I do know that he's going to carry over into season two in some way, just as well as Jack was in all of season one." He added that "there's a chunk of his life that we haven't explored" and that he's "very excited" about all the possibilities.

William's Death Will Inform Randall's Season 2 Storyline

After the episode about William's death aired, creator Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly that Randall's grief will be a big part of the next season. Fogelman said that Randall will ponder "'How do I honor his legacy? What do I do with what just happened in this year I've just spent with this man so that I just don't go back to the same old existence?' And he starts making a bunch of choices and decisions that will affect us going into season 2."

The This Is Us season finale airs March 14.

This Actress Is Revealing How She Found Her Thyroid Cancer, and It Can Save Your Life

In 2015, Lorna Nickson Brown was your average 20-something. Although she had just lost a little bit of weight, she considered herself to be healthy . . . which is why she was completely shocked when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer that year. Lorna recently spoke out about her condition, revealing that there was a tell-tale sign of her diagnosis right in the center of her throat but she did not know what cancer looked like to see that something was wrong.

After her mom noticed the lump in her throat, Lorna, an actress and producer, went to the doctor to see what was going on. Months later, the scans from a biopsy came back and Lorna had cancer. "I felt numb," she told indy100. "I didn't believe it because I felt so well. At the time I was optioned for a Golden Globe-nominated TV series. This isn't what I thought cancer looked like. The minute you tell people, it's the cancer face. I didn't feel ill."

Lorna recently took to Twitter to share her story with her followers and explain how she missed the sign of cancer that was right in front of her face every time she looked in the mirror. In the photo on the left, you can see a bump on her neck, and the photo on the right is Lorna postsurgery after having the lump removed.

"Thyroid cancer is a rare cancer and usually first presents itself with a hard lump at the front of your neck," she wrote alongside the photos. "It is not widely known about. I didn't even know what a thyroid was when I was told I had thyroid cancer. Now I know EVERYTHING about thyroids!!!"

While some thyroid lumps can be harmless, it's important to have them checked out and always be aware of the signs. Interestingly enough, Flip or Flop star Tarek El Moussa was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after a nurse noticed a suspicious lump on his throat while watching a marathon of the beloved HGTV series.

Lorna points out that it's important to check yourself and those around you for the signs of cancer. "Now I feel tremendously lucky that my treatment was successful and feel it is my duty to raise awareness of this condition," she wrote on Twitter. "Please check your neck, and look at others around you. Most thyroid cysts are benign, but some aren't. Mine certainly wasn't. Get it checked!"

Lorna has been in remission for a year and is actually running a marathon to help raise money for Get-A-Head, a cancer charity that supports patients with head- and neck-related diseases. It's so important to learn from Lorna's story and be aware of the signs of thyroid cancer.

New Research Reveals What 3 Types of Modern-Day Dads Are Actually Like

How 1 Mom Is Celebrating the Miracle of IVF With Breathtaking Rainbow Baby Photos

Jennie and John Hill's journey to parenthood didn't come easily. After five miscarriages, Jennie learned that she had a rare chromosome disorder and that because of her condition, she had a 95 percent chance of losing any pregnancy.

With that heartbreaking news, the pair decided to meet with genetic counselors and learned that in vitro fertilization was still an option. "IVF gave us a gift of hope, strength, and courage. We knew going into it that God held our future in His hands and that is where we found peace through the process," Jennie shared with POPSUGAR Moms.

The pair decided to blog about their experience the entire way through in order to help others both learn about and celebrate the IFV process. "I came to learn through our own heartache that many struggle to talk about their losses, some believing they have nowhere to turn. Yet, there are even some who are afraid that others may look down on them," Jennie said. "Not many will talk about options like IVF. We have learned that the miracle of science can be amazing! It should be talked about. It's not a shameful thing, it's an amazing experience that can give so many hope!"

Jennie saved most of her injection needles to help shed light on the process, so when the couple found out that they were expecting Harper Grace, they incorporated this part of their journey into the announcement.

"We wanted to continue the rainbow theme in our announcement and newborn photos (taken by some amazing professional photographers who captured our story perfectly)," Jennie said. "After all, a rainbow baby is significant of a rainbow after a storm. After all our losses and heartache, our rainbow has finally came! Some things are worth waiting (and working!) for!"

Do These 6 Things in the Dressing Room Before Buying New Workout Clothes

It doesn't matter if you spend $20 or $120 on your workout clothes. While you want them to look good, you also expect them to stay put and not distract you when you're wearing them. Since you can't exactly go for a three-mile run or hit up a full yoga class to test them out, here are some things you can (and should!) do in the dressing room to figure out if they'll be your next favorite piece.

Run and Jump

This is a great test for sports bras and tops to ensure your girls are supported without shifting down to reveal your nips. Run in place, run with high knees, do some jumping jacks, squat jumps, side-to-side jumps, and take note of how your chest feels.

Down Dog to Plank

Bending over is a great test to see if gravity wins and exposes your boobs or not. Get into a Downward Facing Dog position (upside down V), and then shift your weight forward into a plank position with your shoulders over the wrists. Repeat this six or so times and then stand up. Is your chest escaping out the top or sides of your bra or tank? Is your shirt so loose that it's flopping up overhead, exposing your belly? Maybe you're OK with that, but if not, put it back. And while you're in Downward Dog, turn around so your tush is facing the mirror to make sure the fabric isn't see-through.

Squat and Lift

This is a great test for bottoms. Squat down nice and low and stand back up eight or so times. Then do some leg lifts out to the sides. Is the waist sliding down exposing the top of your tush? Are the shorts cutting off your thigh in a weird, uncomfortable way? Your bottoms should feel like second skin, so if they annoy you now, they're no good.

Twist and Raise

Stand tall with the arms out wide and twist to the left and right, swinging your arms from side-to-side, and raising them up and down. Is your shirt riding up instead of staying at the waist? Are there any seams bugging you?

Go Rogue

Lastly, throw in some extra movements or exercises you do often, for the true test. And don't be afraid to step out of the tiny dressing room to do them - if you're nervous about wearing this un-bought item in a store, there's no way you'll want to wear it at the gym. Do a handstand against the wall, some burpees or mountain climbers, or a few fun Zumba moves. Any clothes you're considering for purchase should fit well, be comfortable, and inspire you to exercise!

Ciara Channels Demi Moore While Baring Her Baby Bump in a Topless Photo Shoot

Ciara hasn't been shy about how much she's enjoying her second pregnancy, which she proved once again in a stunning photo shoot for Harper's Bazaar's website. Appearing completely topless, the "Body Party" singer - who first announced she was expecting a child with husband Russell Wilson in October - strikes a Demi Moore-esque pose in the gorgeous photo, putting her ever-growing bump on display. Ciara revealed that she's been hard at work making her new album, and luckily Russell has been supporting her every step of the way. "When you know they're going to be your champion, always in the corner . . . ," she trailed off, before elaborating on how much her husband's encouragement means to her. "If someone's not supporting you and your vision and your dreams, whether it's your relationship partner, your friend, whomever, then you've got to make sure to keep it moving. If people aren't lifting you up, even if you're the strongest person in the world, eventually it does chip away at you. You don't even realize that you're losing yourself. And that's the scariest place to be in life . . . I don't want to lose myself. I love myself too much. I love life too much."

Although she didn't mention when she's due, Ciara revealed something even sweeter: her 2-year-old son, Future Jr. (whom she shares with ex-fiancé and rapper Future), can't wait to be a big brother. "He'll randomly pull my shirt up and be like, 'I want to see the baby,'" the proud mom said. "'Hello, baby. How you doing, baby? I love you, baby. Okay, talk to you later, baby. Bye, bye.' Then he'll kiss me on my belly and put my shirt back down." Given how adorable Ciara's relationship with little Future is, we know we're in for some major doses of cuteness whenever she and Russell welcome their new addition.

Emma Watson Just Revealed Her Entire Beauty Routine - Including an Oil For Her Pubic Hair

Emma Watson is so much more than an accomplished actress and feminist role model . . . she's also an incredible source of beauty inspiration. For those who want to use exactly what she does, good news! She recently divulged her regimen in full to the writers behind Into the Gloss.

In case you were unaware of the star's support of sustainability and an eco-friendly lifestyle, you'll see it as soon you browse through her favorite products - they trend towards natural and organic formulas.

"I've become super interested in sustainability and transparency and understanding what I'm putting on my face and on my body," she explained. "It's been a fun little mission to see how far I can go with it . . . Can I put together a hair and makeup look with completely organic products? I needed to figure out if it was achievable or not. You can't talk the talk if you don't walk the walk."

Emma was refreshingly honest, disclosing everything from her slightly klutzy tendencies when it comes to using natural deodorant ("I always end up getting it on my clothes") to her struggle with bad skin as a teenager. And in case you weren't already obsessed with her, the star was also candid about the more private aspects of her routine.

"It's funny - I was just talking to my friend before this about how in the Instagram era it's so easy to edit your life so that it looks perfect," she said. "But I bleach my top lip and tweeze my eyebrows and you'd never get to see that, even though it's a part of my routine. There's still so much shame around the things you do to get ready while you've got a towel wrapped around your head. It's important to me not to edit that out. I've been bleaching my top lip since I was 9. I don't do it very often, but I do it!"

Fans were especially surprised that she chose to share that she uses Fur Oil ($39), a natural blend of oils that is designed to soften the skin and hair on the pubic area as well as prevent ingrown hairs. "I'll use that anywhere from the ends of my hair to my eyebrows to my pubic hair," Emma noted. "It's an amazing all-purpose product."

Read on to shop some of our favorite products from Emma's regimen, then discover her beauty routine in full at Into the Gloss.

Hold On to Your Gowns! This Beauty and the Beast Collection Will Leave You Twirling With Excitement

If you're anything like us, you've been counting down the days until we can see Emma Watson twirling around in Beauty and the Beast. Luckily, we're getting a taste of the fairy tale before it hits theaters next month. We recently spotted what appears to be a Beauty and the Beast collection from L'Oréal on Instagram and our fingers are crossed that it's real, because it looks amazing. The collection includes seven shades of lipstick and nail polish associated with each character. From a Mrs. Potts-inspired bright pink and Belle's classic red to a brown lipstick that pays homage to the Beast, there is a great range of colors to fulfill all of your Disney dreams.

We have reached out to L'Oréal to verify the authenticity of this collection, which appears to be an Italian one. The assortment consists of seven unique Color Riche Lipstick shades, in addition to seven Color Oil Enamel nail polish colors.

Sadly, while most princesses have their fairy-tale endings, we might not: this collection is reportedly only available on Amazon Italy. However, because the site does ship worldwide, we'll definitely be checking back when it launches on Feb. 9. If you're fortunate enough to live in Italy, the full collection can be pre-ordered for $97, or you can pre-order the lipsticks ($11) and nail polishes ($8) individually on Amazon. If these photos - and products - are real, we are all going to be very happy (cue the "Be Our Guest" music).

Keep reading to see all of the stunning themed lipstick and nail polish shades, which are guaranteed to make you feel like the Belle (pun intended!) of the ball.

This Theory Predicts That Tyrion, Jon Snow, and Daenerys ALL Win the Game of Thrones

Is it possible that Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, and Jon Snow could all end up winning the Iron Throne by the end of Game of Thrones? The night is dark and full of theories . . . and this is definitely one of the most compelling. Based on evidence from both the book series and the HBO show, GOT fans have compiled a pretty convincing argument that Jon, Tyrion, and Dany are the prophesied "Three Heads of the Dragon."

If this sounds like a foreign language, don't fret - we've laid the theory out for you below, and it might very well make a believer out of you.

The Theory

During Daenerys's time in the House of the Undying, she has a vision of her brother, Rhaegar, stating that "the dragon has three heads." This three-headed dragon theme is reflected in the series in multiple ways: Daenerys has three dragons (Rhaegal, Drogon, and Viserion), the Targaryen house sigil features a three-headed dragon, and Dany's ancestor Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros alongside his two sisters (all mounted atop dragons). Fans of the series have interpreted the prophecy in the House of Undying to mean that there must be three riders for Daenerys's three dragons before she can win back the Iron Throne.

Presumably, Daenerys herself is one of these dragon riders - after all, she's already ridden Drogon. The obvious choices for the other two riders are Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister. It's been confirmed that Jon is actually of Targaryen lineage, and even if Tyrion isn't related to Jon and Dany, he has a proven connection with dragons.

The Proof

The similarities between Jon, Daenerys, and Tyrion are striking. Orphans who are cast off by society for one reason or another, each of them has an ill-fated love story that is highlighted in the series. One Tumblr user highlighted these parallels in a beautiful chart.

http://ift.tt/1rSbura

The Parallels Between Tyrion, Jon, and Dany:

  • They each descend from an ancient branch of human lineage.
  • All three are outcasts in some form or another: one a dwarf, one (raised as) a bastard, and one literally exiled from her homeland.
  • They are each the third child in their respective family.
  • Each of their mothers tragically died during childbirth.
  • All are fatherless.
  • Each one has made an unlikely alliance during their rise to power: Tyrion with the mountain clans of the Eyrie, Jon with the Wildlings, and Daenerys with the slaves she's freed.
  • They've all had a tragic love story.

Convincing, right? Now the show merely needs to bring the three dragon-riders together so that they can fly, as a united force, to Westeros and take the Iron Throne. Three heads of the dragon are definitely better than one!

The New Illustrated Harry Potter Book Cover Belongs in a Modern Art Museum

Scholastic has been rebooting the Harry Potter book (so to speak) with illustrated editions, and the latest one deserves a spot on your wall. Jim Kay is doing the art, and so far we've loved both the new Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and the version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Now we've gotten a peek at the third installment, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which hits shelves on Oct. 3. Every square centimeter of this cover is thoughtfully crafted, from the destination sign - "Anywhere & Everywhere (Except Underwater)" - to Harry jumping out of harm's way in the bottom right corner.

The This Is Us Cast Teases That the Finale Will Be "Dangerous," and Now We're Worried

We only have one more week until the season one finale of This Is Us, and it looks like we better start preparing ourselves for the worst. While Justin Hartley recently told POPSUGAR that it is going to be "crushingly painful," he further elaborated that it is going to be a "dangerous episode" during an interview with E! News. "I can tell you hold on tight," he said. "It's intense. It gets heavy. Very heavy. This is a different kind of heavy. It's gripping, but it's kind of a dangerous episode. Dangerous is a good word."

Hartley's TV dad, Milo Ventimiglia, also teased that we will start to see the cracks in Rebecca and Jack's relationship. "We're going into uncharted territory with this once bright-eyed, loving couple that now, 20 years later, are trying to stand on their own individual feet," he said. "We're going down a path and on a road that is going to scare a lot of people with regards to the sanctity of the relationship of Jack and Rebecca." It also doesn't help our sanity that the episode is titled "Moonshadow," possibly relating to the moon-shaped necklace he gave her at the beginning of the series, which she still wears in present day. While Ventimiglia didn't speak on the theories surrounding Jack's death, he did tell POPSUGAR that the finale would offer a little bit of resolution.

As far as the actual plot goes, it seems like it's going to be all about the iconic married couple as Jack heads to Cleveland to make things right with Rebecca on the first night of her tour. "I'm not sure if I'm supposed to say, but the episode is really just Milo and I," Mandy Moore told The Wall Street Journal. "There's a scene with everyone else, but it's really the origin story of how Jack and Rebecca met and where their relationship is present day, where we last sort of left them, which is '96."

Guess we should stock up on tissues now before the finale airs on March 14.

This Pregnant Woman Spoofing "April the Giraffe" to Induce Labor Has Gone Insanely Viral

Pregnant women will do some pretty hilarious things to help induce labor - some women dance to Justin Timberlake, while others channel their inner giraffe. Meet Erin Dietrich: she's 39 weeks pregnant and she's ready to do the damn thing. Her tactic to bring on the baby? Spoofing "April the giraffe."

Last week, millions of viewers had their eyes glued to device screens to watch April, the New York-based giraffe, prepare to give birth at the Animal Adventure Park. Now this South Carolina mom is doing the same.

She purchased a rubber giraffe head and went live on Facebook as she paced around her room doing jumping jacks and squats in an effort to move that baby. Her video has over 26 million views and she is officially our new hero.

Erin even wore a string of large pearls to honor April. The millions of viewers are completely captivated by each of Erin's movements, commenting their excitement in anticipation of that one dance move that may do the trick. Now the real question is, who will give birth first - April or Erin?

Hugh Jackman is currently at the top of the box office with his final X-Men film, Logan, and lest you think these movies are a piece of cake for him after all these years, behind-the-scenes video has proven otherwise. Jackman shared a clip of himself doing ADR (automatic dialog replacement) for a scene, and he is giving it everything he has - until he's done, then he completely snaps out of it like he was in some high-intensity trance. Please enjoy, and if you want to know what happens in the movie, we've got you covered.

Chrissy Metz Reveals the Exact Moment She Fell For Boyfriend Josh Stancil

Before Chrissy Metz even started dating her boyfriend, he was already busy sweeping her off her feet. The This Is Us star met camera grip Josh Stancil on the hit NBC drama, and after a month of getting to know each other on set, he asked her out for drinks. Knowing she might be uncomfortable dating a co-worker, he offered to quit his position on the show up front. "It was very unexpected," the 36-year-old actress recalled in a recent interview with Marie Clare. "My priority was my job, and I was not trying to blow my big shot. Josh even offered to go work on another show."

If Josh's sweet offer already has you giving your significant other side-eye, we don't blame you, but his romantic gesture might never have happened if it wasn't for a taco bowl. Chrissy revealed that the first time she noticed him on set was when he was working on his truck and eating lunch, and she couldn't resist saying something to him. "Before I even know it, I called out, 'You better slow down or you're going to choke on your food,'" the American Horror Story alum revealed. "I am typically a little more charismatic than that, I swear." After initiating the flirtation, the rest was history. "I was like, 'Oh, he's cute, with shorts and his backward hat, kind of masculine.'"

The couple have been dating for the past five months now, and Chrissy - who split from husband Martyn Eaden in 2013 - could not be happier. The pair made their first public appearance on the red carpet in January, and although he didn't accompany her to the Golden Globe Awards, Chrissy divulged the absolutely adorable thing he did to support her while she rolled solo for the night: he put a note in her clutch that read, "You're the most beautiful girl in the room. Good luck tonight, have a great time." Now excuse us while we curl up and cry a This Is Us-amount of tears.

Everyone Can Learn From 1 Boy's Heartwarming Act Towards a Complete Stranger

Rick Rock was eating breakfast at Gracie's in Vallejo, CA, and a father, Ken Ingersoll, and his son Elvis were sitting nearby. It began to hail, and when Elvis looked out the window, he saw a stranger with a walker out in the storm.

The boy immediately grabbed his umbrella and ran out to shield the elderly gentleman from the hail as he helped him safely cross the street and to his destination. Rick captured the incredibly sweet act on video and shared it on Facebook. "Good kids are still around, they just don't seem to be seen by the internet," he wrote.

Although the child wasn't doing it for viral fame - he was just helping out a man in need - his kind gesture deserves to be celebrated by those who see it.

The Most Fun a Girl Could Have at Fashion Week Was on the Miu Miu Runway

If you're looking for a hidden meaning behind all the funky fur and glamorous jewels on the Fall 2017 Miu Miu runway, there probably isn't any. That's how Miuccia Prada approaches her line "for the girl at heart." She gives the fashion crowd what it needs to play dress up, depending on her mood. Miuccia set the tone with a hairy purple invite and a furry runway in the same color, but as soon as the show began, we were introduced to the whole rainbow.

Models walked to tunes by '80s hip hop band De La Soul, pairing their furry punk hats with matching furry moon boots and the new must-have kicks: a boot that stops just below the knee decorated with silver hardware, grommets, and strips of snakeskin. Street style star Anna Dello Russo might even try the fuzzy, elbow-length gloves - they're even more eye-catching than a foam hand at a baseball game.

Miuccia's bright coordinates printed with old school telephones and bushy-tailed cats were no more quiet, but if they're too much for you, try an embroidered sweater with a quirky little sparkle patch. While there were plenty of crystal brooches on satin mules, the belts of coats, and clutches, Miu Miu diamonds are not so sophisticated - they're merely a wink to all the women who walk with a pep in their step.

Finally, Miuccia did not forget she's got a red carpet to dress. Sparkling pink midis swathed in paillettes or shifts with sprawling feather patches were perfect for Elle Fanning, Maisie Williams, or Stranger Things breakout star Natalia Dyer. Us? We'll take the groovy fit-and-flares branded with the Miu Miu name. After a season where it became popular to wear your heart on your sleeve, and a runway show that put a smile on our face, we really couldn't ask for more.

Patton Oswalt's 7-Year-Old Daughter Wants Donald Trump to "Calm Down"

Patton Oswalt has been openly vocal about his disapproval of Donald Trump, but now his 7-year-old daughter, Alice, is taking her own opinions public. With the help of her dad, she just sent the president a simple message: "Calm down."

Oswalt, who has been a single father since his wife tragically and unexpectedly passed away in April of 2016, posted a photo to Twitter of Alice holding up her note, which is addressed to the White House. "Alice just made this postcard for President Trump," Oswalt wrote in his tweet. "I just mailed it."

Along with her message for Trump to calm down, Alice included an emoji comparison between herself and the president. On the left side, the chill sunglasses emoji is pictured below the word, "Me," while a shocked, red-faced emoji sits on the right under the word, "You."

An emoji is worth a thousand words.

You Won't Be Able to Stop Watching the Snow Ball Fight Scene in Beauty and the Beast

Emma Watson stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, and aside from reminiscing about Harry Potter, she talked about what it was like filming "Something There" for Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast. While it is regarded as the moment Belle and the Beast fall in love, we can't help but laugh as Watson gets smashed in the face with a huge snow ball. Aside from talking about the movie, she also gushed about the recent LA premiere where she met some iconic celebrities, including the original voice of Belle, Paige O'Hara, and Celine Dion.

This Mom Had an Incredible Response When Her Girl Said She Wasn't as Pretty as Elsa

When her little girl mentioned that she didn't think she was as pretty as Elsa, one mom told her daughter the truth: that she's far prettier than her current "Disney crush."

However, the child didn't believe her mom and this parent understood why. So she was determined to show her daughter exactly how beautiful she is, both inside and out. "You are 5 and so it's a quick fix: dress, flowers, forest. I am on a mission to show you what I see every single day," she shared on the Love What Matters Facebook page. "I think, as you are lifting your hands in the air, that we should do this more. Me and you. Dress up and celebrate who we are. We should twirl more. We should strut."

After her mom snapped some breathtaking photos, her child went about her day, but her mom couldn't stop thinking about the impromptu photo shoot and what sparked it.

I'm still here, wondering how I am going to teach you something that I am still learning myself. How do I raise a woman that accepts, embraces, revels, and celebrates who she is? How do I show you the path to self-worth that women seem to trip over their entire lives? Because what you felt earlier, the dark I saw in your eye: it's a lie that whispers in every woman's ear. All of us. You are 5. And you heard it. It won't always be as easy as a pretty dress and photo shoot. And what when quick fixes don't work?

One day, her daughter will have to work out loving herself on her own, but whenever that time comes, her mom will be by her side. "And I will twirl, even when I look ridiculous," she wrote. "Because you need me to. Because I am beautiful. Because you are beautiful."

SNL's Pete Davidson Reveals He's Sober For the First Time in 8 Years

Pete Davidson is happy, healthy, and stronger than ever. The Saturday Night Live star, who has been absent from both the hit show and social media lately, posted a photo on Instagram on Monday to let his fans know where he's been. "Just wanted to let you guys know I'm okay," he wrote alongside a smiling photo of himself drinking coffee. "I know I've kinda been missing, on social media and on the show. I quit drugs and am happy and sober for the first time in 8 years. It wasn't easy, but I got a great girl, great friends and I consider myself a lucky man. I'll always be here for you guys, I promise. Remember to never give up hope because sometimes that's all we got. We are a family and I appreciate all your love and support. It's nice to be back in action ❤️"

The 23-year-old became the youngest SNL cast member when he joined the show in 2014. But while many people know him for his hilarious comedy, Pete has also been extremely open about his past struggles with drugs and depression. After his firefighter father passed away in 9/11, the actor was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the digestive tract. "My stomach would be in pain all day and I wouldn't be able to eat, but then I'd smoke and I can eat and do my shows," he told High Times in 2016. "I wouldn't be able to do SNL if I didn't smoke weed. I wouldn't be able to do anything, really. Me performing not high has gone awful. It's awful for me, because I don't feel well." Around that same time, he also revealed during a radio interview that Kid Cudi's decision to enter rehab helped him get through a particularly dark time, saying, "I would've killed myself. It's kind of comforting to know your hero goes through the same stuff you do."

Jennifer Lopez Adorably Has No Idea How Much It Costs to Get "On the 6" Subway Nowadays

Jennifer Lopez might not be "Jenny From the Block" anymore. The ultra busy star made a stop at The Daily Show to promote the second season of Shades of Blue, where host Trevor Noah declared his deep love for the Puerto Rican star (apparently, he used to watch the video for "If You Had My Love" over and over again), but also took the chance to quiz her on her Bronx-girl knowledge.

"Are you still Jenny From the Block? Do you still roll with New York?" Trevor asked. "Do you even know how much a subway ticket costs?" J Lo was caught off guard, hilariously saying: "Listen, I started riding the subway when it was 50 cents." Needless to say, she was shocked when an audience member revealed a subway ticket in New York City now costs $2.75, saying: "That's crazy! We need to protest this!" Press play above to watch the full exchange go down, starting at the 6-minute mark. And make sure you watch all the way until the end, when J Lo makes it clear, there's nothing between her and Drake anymore.

Calling All Lazy Girls! Tarte Just Launched a Limited-Edition Vegan Dry Shampoo

Devotees of Tarte know that the brand has been offering eco-friendly makeup formulas for ages now, and in recent years, expanded into body and skin care. Like its product predecessors, the items are high-quality - and often vegan! - making them must haves in any beauty babe's bag. Now Tarte is quietly entering the hair care category, and we're completely psyched.

Amongst its new launches for the season, the brand debuted a limited-edition dry shampoo called Hair Goals. According to the Tarte site, the hair formula features natural thickeners and conditioners that are in its mascaras (including cellulose and rice bran wax), which add volume, lift, and hold at the root. The microfine powder blends into all hair colors - including rainbow, if the above image is any indication – and refreshes strands with a clean, sexy scent. And, best of all, it's vegan, too!

Based on the fun neon packaging, we wouldn't be surprised if this was an (albeit temporary) extension of Tarte's athleisure collection, which launched late last year wrapped in similar punchy shades. Keep reading to see more shots of this new launch and shop it, but act fast, because once it's gone, it's gone.

Fall in Love With NKOTB All Over Again While Watching Them Sing "One More Night"

New Kids on the Block stopped by The Late Late Show With James Corden on Monday night, and their sexy performance of "One More Night" surely brought more than a few Blockheads out of retirement. Although Mark Wahlberg sadly didn't join them on stage, their appearance was full of nostalgic nods to their glory days: subtle choreography, perfectly blended harmonies, and a standout moment from Jordan Knight (duh). Backstreet Boys might be ruling the Las Vegas residency game at the moment, but maybe NKOTB should be next?

Tom Hiddleston Gets "Testy" After Being Asked About Taylor Swift For the 100th Time

Unexpected couple Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift were everywhere you looked last Summer - making out at the Colosseum, strolling down a beach in England with his mom, and enjoying a totally-casual-and-not-at-all-a-PR-stunt afternoon on some rocks in Rhode Island. Naturally their high-profile and out-of-left-field romance sparked plenty of rumors before they called it quits after a mere three months in September 2016, but it seems the Kong: Skull Island actor is sick of fielding questions about his ex-girlfriend.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, writer John Hiscock asked if Tom regretted "the publicity and gossip the romance engendered," which the 36-year-old Golden Globe winner replied to "testily." "What should I regret, in your mind?" he asked. "I would rather not talk about this, if that's alright." Following "a long pause, with his hand on his chin," he went on to explain why he's annoyed with questions about Taylor. "I'm just thinking about this. Everyone is entitled to a private life. I love what I do and I dedicate myself with absolute commitment to making great art and great entertainment, and in my mind I don't conflict the two. My work is in the public sphere and I have a private life," he said. "And those two things are separate."

In early February Tom appeared in GQ, where he happily opened up about his ill-fated relationship with the pop star and even revealed the reason he chose to wear that infamous "I [heart] T.S." tank top at Taylor's annual Fourth of July party ("It was a joke among friends"). Although he insisted the relationship was legit ("Of course it was real"), it certainly seems like the publicity took its toll on him regardless. "I have been working very hard and been away from home for the last three or four years, and I just needed to take a moment to catch up with myself," he continued to The Telegraph. "I've been in London for the last four months and I'm just having a breather and catching up and spending time with my family and friends, which has been really nice." With the premiere of Kong: Skull Island nearly upon us, here's hoping he got plenty of rest before his next press blitz (which will probably include more questions about Taylor, let's be honest).

Mark Bittman's 3-Ingredient No-Knead Bread Actually Works

If bread is the staff of life, then this cook has been wobbling on shaky legs for much of her culinary career. What is it about baking bread that's so daunting? I suppose I've rationalized my bread-baking evasion by telling myself it takes too long and my spaghetti-noodle arms can't knead well enough. But I recognize those are silly excuses, so this week I set about tackling the easiest bread recipe I could find.

About five years ago, New York Times journalist Mark Bittman introduced the baking-phobic world to Jim Lahey's no-knead bread recipe and - in typical Bittman fashion - wowed us again by reducing the 24-hour process to a mere five hours. One of us valiantly (and very successfully, I might add) took a stab at the original, but for those of us who can't plan further ahead than tonight's dinner, this may be the closest we'll come to a lovingly leavened, rustic loaf.

Bittman's recipe calls for a wet dough with plenty of yeast and leverages that high water content to steam the dough in a heavy lidded pot before browning the loaf. This process results in that crisp, crackly crust and fluffy, chewy interior that you crave in a rustic loaf, and all this without a single kneading stroke. Someday I'll pursue the weight training that will get my arms in bread-kneading shape. But until then, I thank Mr. Bittman for fostering my lazy side. For the recipe, keep reading.

Heartilage Piercings Are the New Earring Trend You're Going to Obsess Over

My first pair of earrings were simple studs, the generic pair I picked out when I got my ears pierced as a little girl, but as the years have gone on, my collection of unique, intricate earrings has grown and my everyday studs are a thing of the past. While there's no shortage of pom-pom earrings or single silver drop earrings in the fashion world, I assumed that all cartilage earrings were created equally. I thought that the round silver cartilage earring I rebelliously got pierced with in college (sorry again, Mom) would just be it, no tassels or fringes - and sadly, no diamonds.

There's no denying that it's difficult to design a unique yet chic cartilage earring simply because of the sensitivity and location on the ear, but a piercing legend in New York City has found the solution. Robbie Milian, the one with the piercing gun at celebrity favorite West 4 Tattoo, simply removed the bead from his client's cartilage ring, turned in the metal ends, and shaped the piercing into a heart. We've officially named this heart cartilage trend "heartilage," and we cannot get enough of it! It's the adorable way to spice up your piercing in a way we didn't think could be done.

Robbie's creativity with the heartilage piercing might have been inspired by his frequent heart daith piercings, the innermost area of cartilage, which he often pierces with a beaded heart ring, seen on his Instagram. Keep reading to see more photos of the heartilage trend.
