What to Know About Iron Fist Before Watching the Netflix Series
On March 17, Netflix will add Marvel's Iron Fist to its increasingly popular and ever-growing superhero slate. The new series follows Danny Rand (Finn Jones), a billionaire Buddhist monk/kung fu master who, after being presumed dead for 15 years, returns to NYC to preserve his parents' legacy. However, his self-proclaimed mission is threatened when his attempts at returning the Rand name to its former glory begin to conflict with his duties as the Iron Fist.
If you haven't read the comics or are unfamiliar with the Marvel universe, you may be asking yourself, "Exactly who, or what, is an Iron Fist?" Luckily, we've got you covered! Read below to learn everything you need to know about Danny Rand and his life as the Iron Fist, according to the comics. Warning: mini spoilers ahead!
Origin Story
At just 9 years old, Daniel Rand is tragically orphaned when his parents, Wendell and Heather, are killed while on a family expedition to find K'un L'un, a mystical city that only appears on Earth every so many years. Now abandoned on K'un L'un, Daniel is apprenticed to Lei Kung aka the Thunderer, who helps Danny become a marital arts master. Ten years later at the age of 19, Danny has surpassed all of Lei Kung's other students and is given the coveted opportunity to obtain the power of the Iron Fist, a warrior with special abilities. After defeating Shou-Lao the Undying, a dragon with superhuman energy, Daniel receives the power of the Iron Fist and vows to seek vengeance on the person that murdered his father and caused his mother to die. Ten years later, when K'un L'un reappears on Earth, Danny gets his chance to do just that, returning to New York City to discover the truth.
Powers and Abilities
After plunging his fists into the molten heart of Shou-Lao, all of the Undying dragon's powers were transferred to Danny. He gained the ability to summon and channel his chi energy, which helps him enhance his strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes, senses, and more. He can also channel this energy into his fist; this manifests itself as a bright glow around his hand and gives it the ability to strike with superhuman force, impervious to pain. However, using the Iron Fist temporarily drains Rand of some of his power, leaving him vulnerable. Danny is also capable of self-healing and telepathy. Not to mention, he's a martial arts master with insane acrobatic skills.
Love Interest
While in New York, Daniel befriends Misty Knight (Simone Missick). At this point in the Marvel timeline, former police office Misty (spoiler alert for Luke Cage fans) has lost an arm in the line of duty. Tony Stark creates a prosthetic for her, making her a cyborg. She starts a private detective agency with her friend, Colleen Wing, before the two become a crime-fighting duo. Danny and Misty fall in love and begin a long-term relationship. However, things continue to get in the way (mainly bad guys, kidnappings, and near-death experiences), causing them to break up then get back together repeatedly. Danny also strikes up a relationship with Joy (Jessica Stroup) . . . the daughter of the man who killed Danny's father. Awkward!
Nemeses
Rand has to fight off a number of human bad guys to avenge his parents' death, but supervillians are the real challenge. Notable adversaries include Master Khan, a wicked sorcerer from K'un L'un; Sabretooth, a vicious mutant assassin (a lá X-Men) with animalistic abilities; and the Steel Serpent, a native of K'un L'un who failed to defeat the Undying dragon and resents Danny for his success.
Allies
Sometimes Iron Fist works alone, while other times he is aided by a superhero friend such as Misty Knight, Daredevil, or Luke Cage. Some of these people, along with others, formed crime fighting teams such as the Heroes For Hire or the Defenders (imagine something similar to the Avengers). In fact, in mid-2017, Netflix will release The Defenders, a Marvel miniseries featuring Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). The actors will reprise their roles for all eight episodes!

Let's get a few things out of the way: yes, you know Ashley Tisdale from her work on Disney Channel. "I created the production company because I am someone who loves to work, obviously. I do not like to sit around and wait for my next job, which as an actress there's a lot of waiting time. I really found myself and my voice as a producer when we did the pilot of Young and Hungry. And that's when I got really confident. In any type of business that you're new at, of course you're a little bit insecure about it, like 'I hope I'm making the right decisions,' but for me, it's always about my intuition."
On Obstacles She's Had to Overcome in Her Career
"There is a list! (Laughs) You know, it's never easy. When I first came out to LA, there was an agent that said I'd never work in this business. That is a true statement. I think, specifically, acting is so different from the other side - which is producing, and my makeup line, and I'm the creative director of Signorelli. That type of business is so different. It's about seeing what works and what the fans like and what the audience likes."
On Being Typecast in Hollywood
"It's so funny, because I'm naturally brunette. So when I was growing up and I was screen testing for stuff, I was always screen testing for the blonde role, and I was never getting it. So when Disney Channel decided to change my hair and my look, I definitely did not know I'd be getting all of the blonde roles after that. In this business, it's so natural, unfortunately, for people to put you in a box and think of you as just that character that you've been known for and you constantly do have to reinvent yourself to break out of it. I've been in the business since I was 3-years-old. So I, like I said, I'm always trying to find ways (to reinvent myself). On the acting side, in order for me to do what I really want to do, I'll have to create that for myself."
On Her Relationship With Vanessa
"She's younger than me, (but) we give each other advice. We're always there for each other, through really hard times and exciting times and breakups. It's one of those things. She's like family. It is really rare to have. You know, we shot a movie years ago and it was such a time in our life and we were doing so much together... for me, she's still really good people."
On Advice She'd Give her 13-year-old Self
"What's coming to mind right now is me, singing in the car in the mirror visor like lip syncing to Britney Spears, and I would do that in my bedroom too, but at 13 I didn't think I would be able to do that (for a living). I actually did meet Britney Spears and had lunch with her. A couple years ago she reached out and wanted to have lunch. It was a crazy experience. I thought I was being Punk'd to be honest."
On Youtubers She Watches for Inspiration
"I'm a huge fan of Carli Bybel just when it comes to makeup. That's actually where I learned a lot of my makeup. I know her really well and I have her palette. I just put out my first makeup tutorial which was really scary. It's different from doing stuff that I'm naturally organic like with music, but Carli does it so well where she talks to you about her life so you just get to know her within that clip. I love doing because I do my makeup all the time, but I had so many bloopers."

In 1991, Disney cast Broadway star Paige O'Hara as Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Between her soaring vocals and the way she brings the spirited, 2D Belle to life, it could not have been a better choice. Emma Watson steps into O'Hara's shoes in 2017's live-action reboot of the classic fairy tale, and although there's a lot about the film that differs from the original, they found the perfect way for Watson to honor O'Hara in the movie's final few minutes.
As the Beast, who has once again regained his human form, whirls Belle around a crowded ballroom of villagers, Belle can't get over how different he looks without his fur. She makes a joke about wanting him to get a beard, they share a kiss, and live hairily happily ever after. It turns out Belle's joke, seemingly a throwaway line, was actually one O'Hara ad-libbed while making the film in 1991. "I love [animator] Glen Keane's Beast, that's why I ad-libbed 'Do you think you can grow a beard?'" O'Hara revealed to Insider. "It almost made it in the movie. But Glen's very proud of his prince and I understand why. He really is the most beautiful, I think, of all the Disney princes in history."

You have to anticipate that with a tale as old as time, some details may change between iterations. Though they're both Disney films, the new Beauty and the Beast movie has proven to be quite different than the animated version from 1992. Entertainment Weekly revealed the first look at the 2017 film in November, providing the first insight into what's different about the story. Now that we've seen the film, here are the biggest changes we noticed!
- Belle is an inventor. "In the animated movie, it's her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle," star Emma Watson told EW. "I was like, 'Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn't fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?' So, we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor."
- Belle's father is a music-box maker. "Kevin Kline as Maurice, is making all these music boxes that have to tell the story of Belle not traveling," Katie Spencer, the set director, said. "She's overprotected in a way, by her father, because she's lost her mother. So, we've made all these music boxes that represent different countries of the world, so she can see what she's missing."
- Belle and the Beast get backstories. While Belle doesn't get much of a biography in the animated film, Watson's Belle is much more fleshed out. As we learn throughout the movie, she was born in Paris but had to flee with her father because the plague was sweeping the city. (RIP, Belle's mom.) Meanwhile, there's much more of an emphasis on the Beast's background; he also loses his mother as a child, but his father is far less caring than Maurice.
- The Enchantress plays a bigger part. The original film does feature an enchantress cursing the prince for not giving her shelter, but the woman is much more present in the new film, appearing several times.
- The staff is more affected by the curse. This time around, not only have the staff been turned into household objects, they're slowly losing their humanity more and more each day. Even before the final rose petal hits the floor, they hardly have an human characteristics left.
- LeFou is gay. Yes, LeFou is obsessed with Gaston in the original, but director Bill Condon confirmed that LeFou is definitely gay in the new film. He went on to say there is an "exclusively gay moment," but we were pretty underwhelmed by it.

If you're a fan of This Is Us, then you've no doubt gone crazy theorizing how Jack dies. Over this past season, there have been some pretty convincing ideas, including a real-life plane crash, drunk driving accident, and even an act of gun violence, but now another theory has come to light: he dies in a fire. Even though the season one finale didn't reveal anything about his death, it might have set it up for season two.
After getting in a major argument, Rebecca and Jack decide that they need some time apart. So the two come to an agreement that Jack will stay with Miguel, who we know is actually married to Rebecca in present day. While it's hard to believe that Rebecca would marry her husband's best friend, what if it's because a tragic event brings them together? Reddit user AFriendlyInternetGuy suggested that Jack might actually die a hero by trying to save Miguel in a house fire. Not only does the series finale perfectly set up this scenario, but it would also explain why Miguel's ex-wife Shelly and kids haven't popped up in present day.

Not only would that mutual loss bring Rebecca and Miguel closer together, but it would also explain why the Big Three holds a little bit of resentment for their stepfather. Perhaps that's also the reason Kate feels like her dad's death is her fault, since she tells him to make amends with Rebecca and the two end up separating as a result. This would no doubt be the most shocking twist yet.

The Live-Action Beauty and the Beast Might Be Pretty, but It's Also Pretty Creepy
There's a lot to love about the new, Bill Condon-directed Beauty and the Beast remake: the catchy new musical numbers, Josh Gad's lively (and gay) LeFou, and the gorgeous scenery that seems to stretch on for miles. The latter example is due in a large part to the film's reliance on CGI, which, for the most part, is executed beautifully. The Beast's castle and surrounding gardens loom much more ominously than in the 1991 animated movie, and the "Be Our Guest" musical number is almost overwhelming in its effervescent splendor. But still, something is . . . off.
In one of the film's early scenes, Belle's traveling artist father, Maurice (Kevin Kline), stumbles inside the Beast's castle and is the first to come upon the cursed prince's enchanted servants. He marvels at the exquisite craftsmanship of Lumiere (Ewan McGregor), Cogsworth (Ian McKellen), and Chip (Nathan Mack), and our jaws drop in tandem with his; the objects look so lifelike it's hard to resist reaching toward the screen so you can touch them for yourself. That's where the wonder ends, however - as soon as these characters open their mouths, they transform a quirky, enchanted castle into what would be a decrepit house of horrors if this story were taking place anywhere other than a Disney universe.
Lumiere's limited facial expressions never quite sync with the bouncy, sly energy McGregor's French-accented voice provides, and Cogsworth's countenance is all but hidden behind his intricate, gilded design. Stunning as they might be sitting on a mantel, their bland, frozen faces shroud exceptional voicework, making it that much easier to forget their performances by the time the film's lengthy two hours are up.
Candlesticks and teacups aside, it seems the biggest problem with trading in 2D animation for the real thing falls on the broad, uncomfortably muscular shoulders of the Beast (Dan Stevens). Moments between Belle (Emma Watson) and the Beast that might feel light and innocent in the first film are suddenly cranked into sharper focus, and overall it's a detriment to the love story Disney is trying to tell. How am I supposed to focus on Belle and the Beast's beautiful literary connection if I'm perseverating on the studio's choice to give the Beast a set of sculpted pecs (which CGI whiz had the lucky task of sexualizing a buffalo is something I'd really like to know)? Do I just ignore the hard-to-miss undercurrents of light bestiality? Can I appreciate his evolution as a character if I'm busy wondering if he uses that magic mirror to watch Belle as she changes (yes, that storyline happens in the old movie, but it never seemed nearly as creepy in cartoon form)?
Making these characters appear more "realistic" doesn't just make them more interesting to look at. The artistic choice raises the stakes for all the characters involved, moral or otherwise. When Belle decides to tend to the Beast's wounds instead of seizing her chance to escape, it's tough to continue viewing the movie as a heartwarming romance, rather than a sad tale about kidnapping with a hearty dash of Stockholm syndrome (criticisms in this vein have been around for years, to the point Watson herself felt the need to defend Belle against them). Is it harder to swallow their relationship because I see more of myself in Belle now that she's a flesh and blood human being? Or does the bizarre realism of the Beast's CGI makeover just have me on edge?
The problematic nature of Beauty and the Beast has long been shrugged off by saying, "it's just a fairy tale." It still is just a fairy tale, unless villagers being held captive by giant, man-beast hybrids is a common occurrence in France. But magical and farcical as this movie is (and do not misunderstand me - this movie has no shortage of breathtaking moments), it might be the first (and possibly only) of Disney's list of planned reboots that doesn't benefit from the live-action treatment.

Dad's Note to Selfless Wife Carrying Their Baby Without a Brain to Term For Organ Donation
"The other night, before I left for New Orleans, I was watching my beautiful wife sleep peacefully on the couch," writes Royce Young in a heartbreaking post to Facebook. "I looked at her laying there, her belly big with our daughter kicking away, a daughter that won't live more than a few days, and it just overwhelmed me of how incredible this woman is."
Young's loving ode to his strong and incredible wife, Keri, is making its rounds on the internet, simultaneously breaking hearts and helping the world to see what true selflessness looks like. After getting the unthinkable news that their developing daughter, Eva, does not have a brain and won't live long after birth, Keri asked through sobs whether she'd be able to donate Eva's organs if she carried her to term.
"I remember our doctor putting her hand on Keri's shoulder and saying, 'Oh honey, that's so brave of you to say.' Like, how nice of you, but come on. Keri meant it," Young writes. "There I was, crestfallen and heartbroken, but I momentarily got lifted out of the moment and just stood in awe of her. I was a spectator to my own life, watching a superhero find her superpowers. In literally the worst moment of her life, finding out her baby was going to die, it took her less than a minute to think of someone else and how her selflessness could help. It's one of the most powerful things I've ever experienced."
Young's post continues as he outlines the entire devastating situation while marveling at Keri's strength.
This whole process has been rough, but I say that as someone watching from the bleachers like the rest of you. Keri has been in the trenches the entire time, feeling every little kick, every hiccup and every roll. She's reminded every moment of every day that she's carrying a baby that will die. Her back hurts. Her feet are sore. She's got all the super fun pregnant stuff going on. But the light at the end of her nine-month tunnel will turn into a darkness she's never felt before a couple hours or days after Eva is born. She's the one that is going to deal with all that comes with having a baby - her milk coming in, the recovery process, etc, but with no snuggly, soft, beautiful newborn to look at to remind you that it was all worth it.
We made our choice to carry Eva to full term for a lot of reasons, but the first and foremost was to donate her organs. We don't say that to try and sound like great people or anything. It was just a practical endgame that in our minds, before we came to the realization Eva is alive and our daughter deserves to meet her mama and daddy, gave us a purpose to continue on. Donating was on Keri's mind from darn near the second we found out and while the experience of holding and kissing our daughter will be something we cherish forever, the gift(s) she's got inside that little body of hers is what really matters. Keri saw that almost instantly. . . .
We're getting closer to the finish line, and while it's going to be amazing to run through that tape and meet Eva, it comes at a cost. We'll go to the hospital for a birth, and go home without a baby. A lot of people say things like, 'I wouldn't change anything' after a trying circumstance, but I'm not about to say that. I would definitely change this if I could. I want my daughter to be perfect. I want her to blow out her candles on her first birthday. I want to watch her bang her head on our coffee table trying to learn to walk. I want her to run up a cell phone bill texting boys. I want to walk her down an aisle. I want to change it all so, so badly. But I can't. This is our reality. And there's no stopping it.
Young finishes his soul-crushing post with final thoughts on Keri's character. "She's TOUGH. She's BRAVE. She's incredible. She's remarkable," he writes. "She's cut from a different cloth, combining wit, beauty, courage, silliness, character, and integrity into one spectacular woman. And somehow, she's my wife. Not that I needed some awful situation like this to actually see all of that, but what it did was make me want to tell everyone else about it."

How My Second Baby's Birth Changed My Mind About C-Sections
Before you head to the comments to label me a C-section shamer, let me first say that I was never anti-Cesarean. However you bring your baby into this world was (and is) fine by me. I've now had two C-sections myself, so I most certainly do not fall into the category of people who still don't think C-sections are "real birth," nor do I feel compelled to shame other women about their birth stories.
My negative association with the surgical birth option was solely based on my own hellish experience with my first son's emergency C-section. It left me an emotional wreck even months after my physical wounds had healed (I even wrote about it). I couldn't shake the vivid memories of the whole scary situation and attributed all of my sadness and anger to the operation itself.

When I became pregnant with my second son, I was determined not to have another surgery, so I switched to a doctor who supported vaginal birth after Cesarean (VBAC) and focused most of my prenatal appointments on the topic. I interviewed doulas and read as many positive VBAC stories as I could find. I wanted to have a different birth experience than I did the first time and that meant I would not be having another C-section.
But just as my first birth wasn't what I expected, a VBAC wasn't in the cards for me. After nearly 40 weeks of assuming I would have the chance to delivery vaginally, I ended up having a second C-section to deliver my son. Only this time it was planned. At 39 weeks, the surgery was scheduled less than 24 hours after the doctor recommended it. And it was the best "decision" I ever made.
The entire birth was night and day from the 20-plus hours that were spent bringing my first baby into the world. Instead of chaotic and scary, it was calm and exciting. Instead of feeling uninformed and confused, I felt empowered and in control. Instead of sadness and anger, I felt pure joy and gratefulness.
There I was recovering from the same operation, and yet everything was different. I actually got to enjoy the birth of my son - something I didn't think would be possible with surgery involved. And I've never been more glad to be proven wrong.

Mel understands how difficult it is for some women to get pregnant despite their intense desire to be mothers and doesn't take her ability to conceive for granted.
"While working as a nurse, one day I came across a woman in tears. She was devastated after yet another round of failed IVF. All I wanted to do was fix it for her," she wrote. "I first donated my eggs to a woman who had been trying to conceive for 13 years. Eighteen children have now been born using my donated eggs."
For Mel, she and these other women are similar - whether they can easily get pregnant or not. Just like the theme of a lecture on feminism that she recently sat in on, Mel believes that women can achieve incredible things when they work together. What she's learned from making another woman a mother is something that not many realize.
"While supporting women through infertility, I am constantly amazed at the strength, resilience, and determination of these women. Most of all, their endless capacity to love and care for their sisterhood.
I see the fear, the sadness, and yet the hope and excitement etched on their faces as we make plans - often after a long journey of multiple miscarriages and repeated IVF attempts. Their dreams of cuddling their child seemingly closer. Knowledge that joining a mother's group or doing the school run could soon be a part of their story.
They are fierce and bold and determined to keep trying, even when they are scared and feel let down - over and over. For many, their perseverance paid off. Now they're moms who get a rainbow macaroni necklace on Mother's Day just like I do. But it wasn't easy. In all these women, donors, recipients, those who never conceived . . . I found the meaning of strength, resilience, and love."
Neil Gaiman's American Gods Is Coming to TV, and It Looks Absolutely Brilliant
Back in July, Starz finally unveiled a first look at a project that's been in the works for more than two years. It's the TV adaptation of American Gods, a stunning and masterful high fantasy novel by acclaimed author Neil Gaiman. The story has had its fair shares of hurdles and roadblocks; Gaiman's novel was released all the way back in 2001, and HBO made the first attempt at an adaptation in 2011. The network eventually passed on the project, though, and Starz took the reins in 2014. Thankfully this dark fantasy world is nearly here. What can we tell you about American Gods? Quite a bit.
1. The Story
Before we jump in, let's go over the basic premise of the novel. The story follows an ex-convict named Shadow Moon. He becomes a bodyguard of sorts for a conman named Wednesday, but there's a catch: Wednesday is a actually an ancient god, and he's traveling the country and recruiting his brethren for an epic war. What is he up against? It's a truly a sinister force: the new gods of our modern age. If it sounds epic and insane and magnificent, that's because it is.
2. The Trailer
The first look at American Gods introduces us to Shadow and Wednesday, of course, but we get glimpses of some of the show's most prolific gods. There's Bilquis who, um . . . there's no way to sugar coat this, but she eats humans with her vagina. Then there's Czernobog, whom you can recognize by his eyes, which burn like coals. We even get glimpses of new gods, like Technical Boy. An official trailer has now been released (below), which gives us a better look at Mr. Wednesday and a sense of how the season will shape up (spoiler alert: it's going to be extremely, extremely bloody).
3. The Cast
You can get a glimpse of the incredible cast on the show's official site. We've got Ricky Whittle as Shadow, Ian McShane as Wednesday, Emily Browning as Shadow's late wife Laura, Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney, Bruce Langley as Technical Boy, and Yetide Badaki as Bilquis.
But wait, there's more! A handful of other casting announcements have trickled in over time. In August, we met Easter on Bryan Fuller's Twitter, who will be played by Kristin Chenoweth. Dane Cook has joined as Shadow's best friend, and Gillian Anderson will play Media, who looks a lot like Marilyn Monroe. Are you beside yourself yet?
