The Easiest Effing Soup Recipe Ever - Seriously
I have not always been into cooking. At one time, my diet consisted mostly of Lean Pockets and "salads" made with only carrots and ranch dressing. For my wedding, my husband and I registered mostly for camping gear. We wanted sleeping bags and water filtration systems, not blenders and toasters. As my loved ones and I were celebrating said wedding with a lovely bridal shower, however, one of my dearest friends gifted me a slow cooker (an item I had not registered for). In the card, she wrote something along the lines of this: "I don't know what most of the things are that you registered for, but this is the same slow cooker I received for my own wedding and I love it." And the rest, as they say, is history.
Well, not exactly. But over these past few years, I have come to love cooking and coming up with delicious, healthy recipes. Taking care of two small kids, though, does not leave me much time in the kitchen. I've had to find ways to cook healthy meals that don't take a ton of time and also make plenty of leftovers so I can spend more time with my family and less time over the stove.
That is exactly why I am so in love with what I like to call my "kitchen sink soup" recipe. Why kitchen sink? Because once you know the quantities and simple preparation method, you can literally throw just about anything in your slow cooker (except the kitchen sink), and you'll come out with a delicious, nutritious soup! First, let's take a look at the basic recipe, and then I will share with you a few of my favorite variations.
Kitchen Sink Soup
Time: 6-8 Hours
Serves: 8
Recipe Notes
Optional: Before adding to slow cooker, brown meat on all sides for more flavor. To do this, heat two tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When skillet is hot, add meat in an even layer and let sit for 2-3 minutes. Flip and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until all sides are browned. If using a roast, sear one side at a time. If using ground meat, cook, stirring occasionally, until no pink remains. Delicious, but not necessary if you are crunched for time.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds protein (ground beef, pork roast, beef stew meat, chicken breasts or thighs, chickpeas, beans, etc.)
- 5 cups chopped vegetables (carrots, tomatoes, celery, zucchini, onions, broccoli, peppers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, mushrooms, corn, butternut squash, etc.)
- 5 cups stock (vegetable, chicken, or beef)
- 3-4 teaspoons seasoning (minced garlic, fresh or dried herbs, citrus zest or juice, chili paste, chipotle chiles in adobo sauce, etc.)
Directions
- Add meat and vegetables to slow cooker. Pour in broth and seasonings and stir well to combine.
- Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. Stir well. If necessary, shred meat with a fork before serving.
Easy enough, right? There are so many ways to remix this recipe! Two of my favorites are taco soup and beef and butternut squash soup, but you can literally come up with thousands of twists on this basic soup recipe. Feel free to try out my recipes as a jumping off point, and then come up with your own creations. Happy cooking!

- 4 garlic cloves, minced

- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin

- 1/4 teaspoon each of onion powder and crushed red pepper flakes
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- Add meat, onion, tomatoes, chilies, garlic, and salsa to slow cooker. Pour in stock and all spices and stir well to combine.
- Cook on low for six to seven hours, until meat is tender and vegetables are soft. Stir well to break up meat before serving.

Darth Maul as Supreme Leader Snoke? It's More Likely Than You Think
Going into all the madness surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we've got quite a few mysteries to figure out. Not only are we trying to unpack the meaning of "the last Jedi" and uncover the identity of Rey's parents, but we've also got one big question to answer on the dark side: who the hell is Supreme Leader Snoke? We came up with a few theories of our own, but we couldn't help but notice the kind of fodder elsewhere on the internet. That's when we happened upon one truly crazy theory: that Snoke is actually a villain we've seen before - Darth Maul. Let's go over how it could prove true.
1. Darth Maul Is Not Dead
We all remember how Obi Wan Kenobi brutally cuts Darth Maul in half in The Phantom Menace and lets him fall to his death. It seems pretty definitive. But, well, Darth Maul goes on to appear in the TV shows The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. While many reject these TV series as official parts of the Star Wars canon, it's worth noting that Disney has begun producing them. This would mean that all creative decisions made pertaining to the TV shows are likely made with the events of the films in mind. Plus, if Darth Vader can lose half his body from lava burns and survive, there's a chance Darth Maul could too. Even his official bio on StarWars.com corroborates the fact that he did not die.
2. It Would Explain One of Snoke's Most Telling Comments
The whole reason we're attempting to trace Snoke back to a Star Wars character we've already met is because he says one very crucial thing in The Force Awakens. Snoke reveals that he witnessed the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire. Considering how the rise of the Empire happens in the first trilogy (Episode I to Episode III) and the fall happens at the end of the second trilogy (Episode IV to Episode VI), we're potentially looking for a character who's been around since the very beginning. If you accept the TV shows as canon and believe Darth Maul survived, he certainly fits in here. As for the second trilogy, just because we didn't see him doesn't mean he wasn't around. He could have been in hiding.
3. His Powerful Origins
Darth Maul was an apprentice of the evil Darth Sidious, one of the most terrifying and powerful Sith Lords on the dark side. It's also clear that he possessed great agility and combat skills. Perhaps his hatred for Obi Wan fueled him and made him hungry for more power and even revenge. With such powerful desires lighting his way, it would make sense that he would strive to rise in the ranks of the dark side. This might explain how he eventually came to be the leader of the sinister First Order.
4. They Sound the Same
If you go back and listen to the handful of lines uttered by Darth Maul and compare them to Snoke's voice in The Force Awakens, it's pretty clear that they sound quite similar. It's not just the gravelly quality of their respective voices, either. They share the same accent, tone, and basic inflection. That's pretty hard to write off.
5. But What About the Horns and the Face Tattoos?
Obviously, the biggest hole in this theory is Darth Maul's unmistakable face tattoos and skull horns. But, I mean, come on! Look at Snoke. It's clear he's been pretty badly deformed by some kind of accident. It stands to reason that Darth Maul could have endured some extensive, brutal body trauma that left his face and head permanently changed. It's also worth noting that Darth Maul's mother, Talzin, is a powerful Force witch. It's possible she found a way to transfer her son's consciousness into a vessel that could better handle him. With Darth Maul inhabiting a different body, his tattoos and horns would obviously be gone.
We're not going to take credit for this pretty out-there theory, though. If you want to get down to the nitty-gritty, it's all outlined in the video below.
Maybe it's time to put those tinfoil hats back in the closet for now.

The Live-Action Beauty and the Beast Might Be Pretty, but It's Also Pretty Creepy
There's a lot to love about the new, Bill Condon-directed Beauty and the Beast remake: the catchy new musical numbers, Josh Gad's lively (and gay) LeFou, and the gorgeous scenery that seems to stretch on for miles. The latter example is due in a large part to the film's reliance on CGI, which, for the most part, is executed beautifully. The Beast's castle and surrounding gardens loom much more ominously than in the 1991 animated movie, and the "Be Our Guest" musical number is almost overwhelming in its effervescent splendor. But still, something is . . . off.
In one of the film's early scenes, Belle's traveling artist father, Maurice (Kevin Kline), stumbles inside the Beast's castle and is the first to come upon the cursed prince's enchanted servants. He marvels at the exquisite craftsmanship of Lumiere (Ewan McGregor), Cogsworth (Ian McKellen), and Chip (Nathan Mack), and our jaws drop in tandem with his; the objects look so lifelike it's hard to resist reaching toward the screen so you can touch them for yourself. That's where the wonder ends, however - as soon as these characters open their mouths, they transform a quirky, enchanted castle into what would be a decrepit house of horrors if this story were taking place anywhere other than a Disney universe.
Lumiere's limited facial expressions never quite sync with the bouncy, sly energy McGregor's French-accented voice provides, and Cogsworth's countenance is all but hidden behind his intricate, gilded design. Stunning as they might be sitting on a mantel, their bland, frozen faces shroud exceptional voicework, making it that much easier to forget their performances by the time the film's lengthy two hours are up.
Candlesticks and teacups aside, it seems the biggest problem with trading in 2D animation for the real thing falls on the broad, uncomfortably muscular shoulders of the Beast (Dan Stevens). Moments between Belle (Emma Watson) and the Beast that might feel light and innocent in the first film are suddenly cranked into sharper focus, and overall it's a detriment to the love story Disney is trying to tell. How am I supposed to focus on Belle and the Beast's beautiful literary connection if I'm perseverating on the studio's choice to give the Beast a set of sculpted pecs (which CGI whiz had the lucky task of sexualizing a buffalo is something I'd really like to know)? Do I just ignore the hard-to-miss undercurrents of light bestiality? Can I appreciate his evolution as a character if I'm busy wondering if he uses that magic mirror to watch Belle as she changes (yes, that storyline happens in the old movie, but it never seemed nearly as creepy in cartoon form)?
Making these characters appear more "realistic" doesn't just make them more interesting to look at. The artistic choice raises the stakes for all the characters involved, moral or otherwise. When Belle decides to tend to the Beast's wounds instead of seizing her chance to escape, it's tough to continue viewing the movie as a heartwarming romance, rather than a sad tale about kidnapping with a hearty dash of Stockholm syndrome (criticisms in this vein have been around for years, to the point Watson herself felt the need to defend Belle against them). Is it harder to swallow their relationship because I see more of myself in Belle now that she's a flesh and blood human being? Or does the bizarre realism of the Beast's CGI makeover just have me on edge?
The problematic nature of Beauty and the Beast has long been shrugged off by saying, "it's just a fairy tale." It still is just a fairy tale, unless villagers being held captive by giant, man-beast hybrids is a common occurrence in France. But magical and farcical as this movie is (and do not misunderstand me - this movie has no shortage of breathtaking moments), it might be the first (and possibly only) of Disney's list of planned reboots that doesn't benefit from the live-action treatment.

Juan Gabriel's Son Released a Sexy Music Video For His Weeknd-Style Track
Following Juan Gabriel's unexpected death in 2016, it was revealed that he had two sons by two different domestic employees, in addition to the four children he shared with longtime friend Laura Salas. Now, one of those sons appears to share his father's musical aspirations.
In March, 26-year-old Luis Alberto Aguilera released the music video for his party song titled "Sprite." In the simple yet sexy video, Luis sings his lyrics into the camera, throwing in a few angsty expressions and gratuitous shots of Sprite cans. The song itself sounds extremely contemporary and could actually belong in the same category of music as The Weeknd.
Though his style and vocals differ from that of his father, he seems to be a pretty talented guy! Watch his buzzy music video, above.
4 Pore-Clogging Ingredients That Are Keeping You From Having Clear Skin
You've set up a strict skin care regimen, exfoliate regularly, keep your hands off of your face, and never go to bed without removing your makeup. If congestion and pimples are still making a regular appearance, it may be due to pore clogging ingredients in your products.
Acne treatment products are designed to clear pores, clean the skin, remove dead skin cells, and quell breakouts. All important factors in a pimple-free complexion. The problem is, many acne solutions contain ingredients that actually cause clogged pores.
When shopping for skin care and makeup to suit acne-prone skin, you likely look for products that are noncomedogenic, meaning the product is formulated not to cause blocked pores. But here's the deal: there are no set regulations for the term. This means any product can carry the noncomedogenic claim but may still clog your pores.
Another hot term in acne solutions is "oil-free." It's often associated with products that will keep pores clear and ward off breakouts, but often products that claim to be oil-free contain other comedogenic ingredients to make skin feel soft and smooth. On the flip side, products that dry out the skin can also lead to acne and congestion. These pore-clogging ingredients can also be found in makeup, so it is important to check your product labels thoroughly.
The good news is, these ingredients are easy to identify. Here's what to look for on product ingredient listings.
1. Alcohol
These ingredients are mainstays in most acne systems. Alcohols are used to cleanse, tone, and provide antibacterial benefits. They are also drying, irritating, and disrupt the skin's natural balance.
Contrary to popular belief, dehydrating oily skin is not the best solution. When drying ingredients are used on oily skin, the skin reacts by producing even more oil. This excess sebum is then trapped under the flaky layer. Zits are the result.
Avoid: ethanol or ethyl alcohol, denatured alcohol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, SD alcohol, and benzyl alcohol.
Opt for: toners made with skin-clarifying ingredients that won't strip away natural oils, like witch hazel, green tea, floral waters, and cucumber water.
2. Petroleum Ingredients
If you have oily skin, you are likely not looking for overly emollient products. You may be surprised to find petro-ingredients, like petrolatum and mineral oil, lurking in your skin care. These ingredients give products a moisturizing feel but are occlusive. They form a barrier on top of skin which prevents it from drawing moisture from the air.
Even though this ingredient is often marketed as noncomedogenic, anything that seals off the skin from air and moisture will also trap dirt, oil, and debris in pores.
Avoid: petroleum jelly, petrolatum, mineral oil.
Opt for: jojoba oil is most closely matched to the skin's naturally produced oils and vitamin E is lightly hydrating, both great options for oily or acne-prone skin.
3. Silicones
Oil-free products have to get smoothing and softening properties somewhere, and often it's from silicones. These ingredients are used in facial products and hair care to give a smooth, slippery feel, but they also cause congestion. Like petro-chems, silicones form a seal on skin, trapping grit and bacteria in pores. That silky feel isn't worth skin irritation and worsened acne.
Avoid: dimethicone, dimethiconol, dimethicone copolyol, cyclomethicone, methicone, phenyl trimethicone.
Opt for: natural oils of avocado, rosehip, and jojoba give skin a smooth surface and cushiony feel.
4. Sulfates
Synthetic surfactants are regularly used to make a product foamy and give that ultra-clean feel. These harsh cleansers not only cause dryness, but are linked to irritation and inflammation. As with alcohols, this drying effect means flakiness, over production of oil, and further breakouts. Redness and sensitivity are also common with continued use of synthetic cleansers.
Avoid: sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES).
Opt for: mild plant and sugar-derived ingredients, like glycerin glucoside and lauryl glucoside, which cleanse without drying or irritating the skin.
So, Ed Sheeran Was a Very Cute Child
We all know and love Ed Sheeran for who he is today: an insanely talented musician, an adorable boyfriend, and one of Taylor Swift's BFFs. But have you ever wondered what he was like as a baby? Ed debuted his music video for his hit song "Photograph" back in 2014, and after recently rewatching it, we remembered that it's full of amazing home videos from his childhood. From lying naked on the floor to rocking cute glasses to being an all around happy baby, you'll never make it through these snapshots without smiling like a fool.

Joseph Morgan's Immortal Good Looks Will Send Chills Up Your Spine
The Originals is full of delicious eye candy, but there's just something irresistibly sweet about Joseph Morgan. The English actor, who is best known for his role as Klaus Mikaelson on the series, has been making our hearts go pitter-patter ever since he appeared on The Vampire Diaries. From his sexy accent to his smoldering good looks, it's no wonder Caroline fell for the original vampire. Whether he's fighting off werewolves and witches or he's out and about on the red carpet, the 35-year-old always manages to make us swoon. See some of his hottest moments here.
Courteney Cox Would Never Have Met Her Fiancé Without Some Help From Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran's love songs have played a part in plenty of relationships, but it turns out Ed himself is also somewhat of a modern-day Cupid. While the "Shape of You" singer-songwriter was writing his 2014 album, X, Courteney Cox let him crash in her Malibu beach house for free. "There was no rent but I made the bed and cups of tea and things like that," he told The Sun. "If you're staying at your friend's house, you should treat it like your own." Although it's unclear how the two unlikely pals first linked up, he repaid the Friends actress with more than household chores: he introduced her to her future fiancé, Johnny McDaid. The Snow Patrol musician, whom Ed met while opening for the band on tour in 2012, stopped by Courteney's home to help Ed out with the album and apparently had an instant connection with Courtney.
The pair got engaged in June 2014 after six months of dating, and it was rumored that Ed would officiate their nuptials, as well as perform a few songs at their reception. Courteney happily revealed the fun news to The Sun, saying, "We are certainly grateful to Ed for introducing us. I can't imagine him not playing something at the wedding. It'll be a musical night." Although Courteney and Johnny later called off the wedding in December 2015, they reunited just a few months later. Hopefully there's still a tear-jerking wedding performance courtesy of Ed in their future!

The 1 Product Dermatologists Swear By
Come Winter, you better believe that dermatologist offices become flooded with garden-variety concerns, ranging from itchy, red skin to dry, cracked lips. Curious to learn what advice these skincare specialists dole out to their patients - and what products they recommend - we reached out to New York City board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rosemarie Ingleton. An expert in the general and cosmetic dermatology space, she has heard her fair share of dry-skin woes, which routinely peak during the cold-weather months.
"At this time of year people come with complaints related to dry skin and eczema," Dr. Ingleton said. "Dry skin always has to be addressed, though. Even in Spring and Fall, there is always some level of dry skin people have to counter." To soothe her patients, Dr. Ingleton starts by learning about her patients' skin habits. She'll ask about shower frequency, type of product being used in the shower, the temperature of the water (water that's too hot can dehydrate the skin), and what they do afterward for hydration. "There's a large subset of the population that does not use anything after they shower. They just shower and they are gone."
Once she does that, she makes a surprisingly affordable recommendation.
"[For] people who have cracked skin or have dry skin, I recommend getting the skin damp and then applying Aquaphor® as a layer of hydration. I do this for my superdry patients," she explained. "The hands and feet do really well with it."
Dr. Ingleton trusts Aquaphor® Healing Ointment because it's simple and versatile. "The reason I recommend it is because there's no fragrance, which is great because that's the number one allergen. It's also multifaceted and can be used for a number of conditions."
But dermatologists are not the only ones reaching for this product. POPSUGAR Beauty editors are as well. We tapped them to see how they felt about using the product. Lauren Levinson, senior editor, Beauty said, "I love to use it on my lips. The fact that it is not scented and soothing makes it a bag staple. It's the best for flights since you can really put it anywhere!" Joanna Douglas, our Native editorial director also relies on the multi-tasking qualities of this tube. "I use Aquaphor on a regular basis but truly count on it in the Winter when my skin is in rough shape," she said. "If I have a bad cold I'll put some around my nostrils and Cupid's bow area before bed. When I wake up, my irritation is magically gone. It's also my savior for chapped lips, dry cuticles, even scaly elbows."

How Oral Health Impacts Your Overall Quality of Life
For years doctors have suspected a link between a person's oral and cardiovascular health. Now, there is evidence the connection might be greater than anyone ever imagined. A recent study showed those with gum disease had a much higher likelihood of also having a chronic condition, such as heart disease or diabetes. But even as doctors acknowledge the connection between the body and oral hygiene, there are still questions about how it affects the rest of your body and why the most basic habits - like brushing your teeth - can boost your overall health.
Your Mouth Could Be the Initial Battlefront For Disease
Every day you perform routine tasks to keep your mouth free and clear of bacteria. Brushing and flossing prevent buildup that can lead to gum infection. If you fall short on dental duty and an infection develops, your immune system attacks the infection, causing the gums to become inflamed, which can continue unless you get the infection under control. And having one infection, leaves you more open to getting sick in other ways.
Long-term inflammation can lead to damage to the gums and bone structure, and cause problems throughout the body. As a matter of fact, there is growing evidence inflammation plays a role in just about every health problem we face.
Heart Disease and Diabetes
There is a strong link between heart disease and oral health. In part, this is because the two share several risk factors, including unhealthy eating, being overweight, and smoking. But there's also speculation that gum disease actually increases a person's risk for developing heart disease because it creates inflammation in the blood vessels. In addition to affecting the blood's ability to flow through the body, there is also an increased chance fatty plaque will break off and move to the brain, which can trigger a stroke or heart attack.
In addition to heart disease, there is also evidence that gum disease is linked to diabetes. Diabetes leads to abnormalities in blood vessels, as well as high levels of inflammatory chemicals such as interleukins, which significantly increase the risk for gum disease. High levels of triglycerides - common in type 2 diabetes - also affect periodontal health. And high blood sugar levels have been associated with severe periodontal disease in people without diabetes, according to one 2000 study. The relationship between gum disease and diabetes goes both ways, too. Having high blood sugar makes you more prone to diabetes because it creates an ideal environment for infections.
Weight plays a role in heart health and whether or not a person has diabetes, and two recent studies have linked gum disease and obesity. According to researchers, periodontitis tends to progress faster the higher a person's body fat is.
Bone Health
There's more: Your bone health is also likely linked to your dental health. Gum disease and osteoporosis both cause bone loss, according to recent research from the National Institutes of Health Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases National Resource Center. Researchers are also looking at the link between inflammation and bone health. Additionally, there are medical studies examining links between oral health and rheumatoid arthritis and lung diseases.
So what does all of this mean? According to doctors who have studied the link between oral health and overall health, it means you need to invest time and energy into caring for all parts of your body. It's just as important to exercise and eat right as it is to brush, floss, and see a dentist on a routine basis. It's also a good idea to share your overall health history with your dentist and your dental history with your general physician. This way your healthcare providers fully understand your risk factors.

SNL's Old Beauty and the Beast Skit Is Still So, So Funny
Once upon a time, Saturday Night Live aired a Beauty and the Beast-themed skit with Kristen Wiig as Belle and Gerard Butler as her Beast. It's a gem for several reasons, one of which is that it happened during Jenny Slate's one season on the show and she appears as a promiscuous Mrs. Potts. With the new movie out, it's time to go back and appreciate this genius sketch.

You Guys, Gucci Memed Itself and the Results Are Straight-Up Hilarious
It looks like Gucci - and more specifically, its marketing department - is going down a rather unexpected road. Don't worry; the brand isn't breaking into fast fashion. Rather, the fashion house has started dipping its toes into the internet meme culture.
Gucci just launched a project called #TFWGucci (the acronym translates to "That Feeling When," for anyone not up to speed with how the youths speak these days). This collaborative venture invites artists and creatives to design or provide ideas for memes that incorporate watches from Gucci's new Le Marché des Merveilles collection. Photos of Gucci timepieces combine with superwitty and humorous captions to make for one strategically creative advertising move.
Though this seems slightly out of left field for the iconic brand, it's actually a pretty genius move to accomplish its goal of redefining contemporary luxury. In a way, it makes high fashion more accessible, and we fully support it. Look ahead to see some of the most original #TFWGucci memes that have been crafted to date - they're surprisingly entertaining and relatable!
These Illustrations of Disney Princesses Going to the Doctor Without Obamacare Are Too Real
Belle, Ariel, and Elena of Avalor are all dealing with the effects of a world without Obamacare in these illustrations created by a duo of creative Latinas, illustrator Maritza Lugo and writer Danielle Sepulveres.
With the fate of the Affordable Care Act (popularly known as Obamacare) up in the air, Maritza and Danielle decided to use everyone's favorite princesses to show off the devastating implications that the repeal will have for millions of Americans - specifically women.
"At the end of 2015, I contacted Maritza and asked if she'd be interested in drawing re-imagined Disney princesses to bring awareness for cervical cancer awareness month," Danielle told us via email. "This year, we decided to revamp that project and brainstormed how we could be most effective in showing the consequences of the repeal of ACA, looming ominously over essential healthcare for women." The results: Pocahontas being denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition, Belle having to pay for a new birth control prescription, and Elena facing protestors outside of Planned Parenthood. Scroll ahead to see the poignant illustrations and read what Maritza said about each of them on Instagram.
