Why I Ditched the Baby Monitor - and So Should You
When my baby was first born, I started out with not one but two baby monitors. The first was a traditional audio monitor, and the other was a fancy video device that synced with our iPhones. As someone who is always "connected" (hi, I'm the mom who texted during labor - nice to meet you), why wouldn't I want the same level of attachment with my newborn baby?
The only thing - it took less than a month to viscerally hate them both. Here's why.
You know what's a good baby monitor? A baby.
Sure, this might not apply to those families in big houses where there can be plenty of square footage between you and the nursery room, but for this apartment-dweller, having a baby monitor was not just useless, it was synonymous with crappy surround sound. I didn't, it turns out, need to use a speaker system to amplify the combination of static with my child's wails on a 1.5-second delay.
Not all noises are created equal.
Babies are loud. In addition to crying, the most stereotypical of annoying baby sounds, they also do the following: snore, sneeze, cough, wheeze, hiccup, yawn, grumble, gurgle, grunt, sigh, squeak, snort, inhale, and, of course, exhale. (Yes, their very act of breathing in and out is audible.) Being awoken in the middle of the night by every single one of my newbie's 37 sneezes, as adorable as they are, is not ideal.
Babies make for insanely addictive (yet incredibly boring) reality TV.
You put your baby to sleep and slink out of the room. You breathe a sigh of relief (one that, for the record, is patently quieter than anything that baby's done all day) and plop down on the couch. If the next thing you do is grab your phone to scroll your Facebook feed, scarf potato chips by the handful, or zone out to some terrible Lifetime original movie, you pass. Congrats!
If, however, you pull out that damn video monitor and stare at your baby's every move - of which (news flash!) there aren't many - you've truly failed.
You spend so much of your time with your baby that you really should not be spending time when you aren't with your baby with your baby. (Go ahead, read that sentence again until it begins to make sense.)
No sane person wants to spend their free time "troubleshooting."
The modern-day take on Murphy's law? The more expensive the gadget, the more likely it is to break. I can't tell you how many sleep-deprived, passive-aggressive arguments my husband and I got into trying to figure out why our WiFi connectivity was weak, why our login wasn't working, why the camera was frozen. . . . As new parents, the only troubleshooting you should be doing involves dirty diapers.
It will always, always turn on you eventually.
One week, we had family in town. Not to say they overstayed their welcome, but my husband and I would need to help each other with "that one thing" in the nursery room, which was well-orchestrated code for huddling together on the floor and whisper-complaining about how so-and-so said this and how you-know-who did that. Then, all of a sudden, the faint green light of the baby monitor station, just a few feet away from us, caught my eye. It was transmitting to the receiver, which was smack dab in the middle of our living room.
We'd just been made.
Who can say if they were listening? It made no difference because, let me tell you, having to walk into your own living room and collectively pretend no one said or heard anything amiss is not how anyone should spend one minute of their already stressful maternity leave.
You will even use it for evil.
For reasons I am certain were valid at the time, I was convinced my husband wasn't wiping our baby girl correctly. "It's imperative you only go front to back," I'd remind him pre-diaper change. In lieu of having faith in my life partner, I opted to fire up the video monitor and used my distant background in investigative journalism to uncover the cold, hard truth that . . . oh, would you look at the time? I am going to be late for that thing!
So, in one of my surest parenting decisions yet, I turned off both monitors for good. (And, you know, started to trust my husband.)
There are certainly times, however, when I do consider plugging them back in.
One night, I heard my now-toddler coughing. It only lasted for a second, but it sounded slightly different than other coughs she's made. Something wasn't quite right, but I thought better of going in and possibly waking her up for no reason. An hour later, it happened again. I trusted my gut and went into her room. There, on the crib mattress were two small piles of vomit - one a little more dried up than the other.
In my grief over being a terrible mother, I hypothesized that if we'd still had the video monitor, I would have been able to act faster - but, as I try to remind myself, the monitor wouldn't have made her not puke all over her sheets. And if we're going to point fingers, it's really the puke we should be pointing at.
Another cause for second thoughts?
Based on what YouTube has proven time and again to be true, toddlers are hilarious. Thanks to many a viral baby monitor recording, parents have captured their children doing some pretty memorable stuff when they are supposed to be in their beds napping.
I'll never be able to watch my kid attempt a headstand while singing show tunes to her stuffed monkey, which - based on noise alone - is my best-educated guess for what's happening in there. Without a monitor mounted on the wall, I'll never know what she's really up to when no one else is looking.
But maybe it's better that way.
Severe Burns Aren't Even the Most Dangerous Part of the "Eraser Challenge" For Kids
Schools are speaking out about the latest online fad with kids that is leaving them with "serious burns" and an increasing number of injuries.
Although there is nothing new about erasers in school or kids challenging each other to do stupid things, many parents aren't aware of the "eraser challenge" and why it can be harmful to their children. This dare is continuing to bubble up on social media and capture the attention of young kids as they show off their wounds.
"Kids are rubbing an eraser across their skin while having to do or say something. It's causing serious burns," read a statement on Facebook from East Iredell Middle School in Statesville, NC. "These 'challenges' have gotten out of hand."
The challenge varies, but in one version, kids dare each other to recite the alphabet while they rub their skin as hard as possible with an eraser. Kids boast about who can last the longest even after they are left with burns and cuts from the "game."
"I think children are lonely. They sit in front of the internet and they don't have anyone to be accountable to," one parent told WCNC.
Part of the danger of this challenge is the different types of infections that can be caused from rubbing a dirty eraser into a wound. "It is important to understand that pencil erasers are far from clean. They may have been borrowed from a teacher or other student, in someone's mouth, or dropped on the floor, etc. Rubbing them against their skin until an opening in the skin develops can result in a severe infection," warned Warren Hills Middle School in New Jersey on their website. They also explained that that "eraser burn" can lead to staph or strep infections, or other diseases, including hepatitis and HIV.
"These are kids acting like kids. It seems like there's this bravado in it, there's this easy accessibility . . . when you're thinking about the social dynamics of children trying to belong, trying to get attention and show strength, it isn't that surprising," Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson, a pediatrician, told Today. "Kids don't know this, but your skin isn't sterile, it's crawling and teeming with bacteria and when you open up your skin, that bacteria can crawl in and cause an infection."

Do you have the backup of your partner when he is back in town? If an emergency erupts, does he come back from his work trip?
If the answers are no, then no, you are not a single parent. But we are happy to adopt your husband for when he's out of town and borrow his income from time to time.
Because the reality is, no one is coming home to relieve us of our stress. Sure, the cabana boy or 21-year-old guy on OKCupid or Tinder might be interested in cutting the lawn, but we never take offers like that. Unless, of course, he's right out of Magic Mike.
The reality is, we feel your pain when the husband is gone and we know motherhood is hard work but the fact is the two scenarios are so very different so please shh!
It Must Be SOOOO Hard
When people hear you're a single mom, they instantly say, "Wow, I am sorry. That must be so hard."
And yes, single motherhood is hard but so are many things.

I Am Not Interested in Your Husband
I have had a few insecure women think my single motherhood status meant I was going on Craigslist looking for a man just like their husband even though we were always just completely friends.
No, ladies, I don't want your husband. If I am being honest, an extra wife would be more helpful, so if you wouldn't mind, please come over with some cleaning supplies and dinner. We could use the helping hands.
Where Is Everybody?
Some days, we almost forget we run the show and so we stand around and think, "Where the heck is everybody?" until we realize that we are the "everybody" in question.
That's when we open the bottle of wine and thank ourselves for being so hardworking, resourceful, amazing, and divine.

Don't assume I am broke, the dad is a deadbeat, or I hate my life.
Don't assume I am a train wreck or unstable because I am not coupled.
Don't assume anything about our single-mother lives. Learn who we are as people and parents.
Ouch: They're Headed For Divorce
Whether the dad left us, there was a divorce, there was no marriage but a breakup, or what have you, single moms have this uncanny ability to watch a couple and sort of know: "Oh man, they're headed for splitsville."
We don't like this knack, but when we see stuff go down between partners, we know silently that it is going to end.
Gratitude
When we don't have to ask for help and a friend or family member extends themselves, we are so grateful. We may say it simply, but the gratitude runs much deeper than we will ever say.
Sadness
When our "loved ones" don't support us or back us up, on the flip side, we feel sad inside but will never say it. We may never reach our hand up to say "We need help," but when a family or friend sees we blatantly need it and doesn't offer or we go outside of our comfort zone to ask and are cruelly refused, we are hurting inside.
Secretly Like Being the Boss
As much as we want love and someone else to pitch in, we also enjoy calling the shots because we know we are doing the best for our children and it feels good to do so in a healthy atmosphere!

The Appalachian Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina has asked for donations of specific items ahead of the opening of a new facility for injured and orphaned animals.
Among those items: clean mascara wands. Savannah Trantham, a wildlife refuge worker, explained how these seemingly useless old brushes can actually be great for animals. "We use mascara brushes to help remove fly eggs and larva from the fur of animals," she wrote on Facebook. "They work great because the bristles are so close together!" To clean the wands, just run them under hot water and clean with soap, and then send to the Appalachian Wild address.
This is such a great cause, and we definitely have some old brushes that can help these animals.

There is a nuanced royal protocol in place as a way to ensure universal respect for Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of her relatives, and although it's rather simple, people still manage to break it all the time. In 2009, Michelle Obama was chastised for hugging the queen, and basketball superstar LeBron James was called out in 2014 for putting his arm around Kate Middleton after the Cleveland Cavaliers won a game against the Brooklyn Nets. Although many people would sell an organ to get a hug from Michelle or LeBron, each broke the number one rule when meeting the royals: don't go beyond a handshake.
We might fawn over Kate Middleton's down-to-earth personality now, but years ago the royal family was treated with such supreme reverence that they were likened to divine beings, therefore touching them was off limits. In an interview with the BBC, British historian Kate Williams explained that "from medieval times, monarchs were divinely appointed to rule by God, so they were kind of seen as gods, so they demanded to be treated as gods." Luckily the modern royal family didn't object to either Michelle or LeBron's breaches in protocol, a sign that they're more than open to adopting a more relaxed level of formality. The monarchy's official website makes it clear that "there are no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting The Queen or a member of the Royal Family," but outlines a few options for anyone who chooses "to observe the traditional forms."

The monarchy suggests women do a small curtsy and men do a neck bow (from the head only), although other people "prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way." After the incident with the first lady, a Buckingham Palace spokesman actually denied that there are strict rules about being tactile with the queen. "It was a mutual and spontaneous display of affection," he said. "We don't issue instructions on not touching the Queen." What to say while meeting the royal family:
It also notes that the formal way to address the queen is "your majesty," and afterwards, "ma'am." The monarchy suggests women do a small curtsy and men do a neck bow (from the head only), although other people "prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way." After the incident with the first lady, a Buckingham Palace spokesman actually denied that there are strict rules about being tactile with the queen. "It was a mutual and spontaneous display of affection," he said. "We don't issue instructions on not touching the Queen." A similar thing happened when a fish market employee appeared to place a hand on the queen's back in 2013, and her reps released a statement saying, "She did not touch the Queen, and even if she had done the Queen would have taken no offense."
What to say while meeting the royal family:
It also notes that the formal way to address the queen is "your majesty," and afterwards, "ma'am." If you're speaking to other members of the royal family (i.e. Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, etc.), it's "your royal highness," and then "sir" or "ma'am." This rule doesn't fly with Prince William, however, who once said "I am and always will be an HRH. On Tuesday, the 41-year-old actress gave her first lecture at the London School of Economics and Political Science's Centre For Women, Peace and Security, People confirms. Her lecture focused on women's rights while discussing subjects like refugee camps and how displacement and statelessness can lead to more sexual violence and other crimes against women and girls. "Miss Jolie spoke about her experience and what has motivated her work as UNHCR special envoy and as co-founder of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative, and took questions from the class," a spokesperson for LSE told the publication.
Angelina launched the initiative with England's First Secretary of State William Hague in 2015 with a "focus on the participation of women in conflict-related processes and on enhancing accountability and ending impunity for rape and sexual violence in war." She will teach a nine-month course on the matter beginning in September at the same university.

For some kids, it's not enough to watch YouTube videos. Some kids want to make them, too. And a growing number of under-20 YouTubers are doing just that - and earning good money. Whether they play Minecraft, review toys, make music videos, or just rant, they're attracting other kids in droves. (Check out "A Parent's Ultimate Guide to YouTube" for tips on managing your kid's YouTube time.) With millions of viewers, young vloggers are regularly among YouTube's top 50 most-subscribed-to and most viewed, becoming nearly as influential and vital to kids as TV.
Like all things on YouTube, kid vloggers come in all varieties. Some, such as tween gamer LTCorbis, are completely independent, self-funded, and self-motivated. And not necessarily age-appropriate. Some, such as the 7-year-old star of Ryan ToysReview, are directed by their parents. Some are part of larger content-creation groups, such as the Fine Brothers Entertainment channels Kids React and Teens React. Most YouTube kids also are multiplatform, cultivating audiences on Instagram, Musical.ly, Snapchat, and Twitter, and even writing books.
It's natural for kids to be attracted to watching other kids. But be aware that many YouTube videos - even ones hosted by kids - may contain mature content. And while plenty of kid YouTubers are safe bets, there are some pros and cons about the entire enterprise.
On the Up Side:
- Videos tend to be relatively brief, bite-size chunks of news and entertainment (ideal for kid attention spans and schedules).
- The hosts are interested in the same subjects your kids are, and they look and talk like them, which gives your kids a sense of connection.
- When kids choose their own entertainment, they often don't spend time on stuff they don't like. They tune into specific vloggers who deliver incredibly relevant information that's tailor-made to their interests.
- The fact that these kids are earning thousands (and even millions!) can make vlogging look like an attractive undertaking to fans (i.e., your kids). It also can be a creative and educational hobby, but there are some risks. If your kid wants to try it, get tips on doing it safely.
On the Down Side:
- Language and content can be an issue, especially with gamers and any tween and teen vloggers.
- Your kid will be seeing a lot of advertising. Ads are how YouTube and its users make money, and the ads are not all age appropriate.
- Many YouTubers, especially toy reviewers, get stuff for free in exchange for coverage on their channels. They may or may not disclose that fact. But your kids may not understand that sometimes what they're watching is essentially advertising.
- According to YouTube's terms of service, users must be at least 13 to run a channel. The fact that there are so many kid bloggers makes it seem like younger kids are permitted. Kid bloggers usually state that their parents actually own the channel, but this fact could be lost on your kids.

If you're one of the lucky people who has seen Adele in concert, then you probably already know about her sneaky way of getting on stage. The "When We Were Young" singer is currently on the Australian and New Zealand leg of her world tour, but during a few of her earlier shows, concertgoers caught how she gets from her dressing room to the stage. Adele, who gave husband Simon Konecki a cute shout-out during her concert in early March, gets transported via a giant wheeled box.
The large equipment-type trunk is rolled underneath the stage before the show starts and is also conveniently joined by her personal security guard, Peter Van Der Deer. She also talked about the slightly traumatic method during one of her Australian shows, telling the audience it frightens her to be in the closed space. Long story short: Adele is the best.

What Kind of Milk Is Really the Standard at Starbucks?
Unless you specify otherwise, your Starbucks latte will be made with 2 percent milk . . . but that wasn't always the case. When Starbucks first opened in 1971, all lattes and milk-based drinks were made with whole milk because former CEO Howard Schultz wanted use the milk that Italians drink with their coffee. "Originally, Schultz only allowed whole milk in stores," because he strove to serve only "Italian-style espresso drinks," NPR reported.
While whole milk was the standard for more than 30 years, customers began to voice their opinions and demand a change, so Starbucks "eliminated all artificial trans fat and made 2 percent milk the new standard for espresso beverages" in 2007. What's interesting is that year was the first time that Starbucks actually started carrying 2 percent. If you asked for it before then, what you really got was a blend of whole milk and skim milk made by the barista. According to the Seattle Times, "each reduced-fat latte at Starbucks was its own unique blend. Baristas poured a little from the whole-milk jug and a little from the skim-milk bottle until one-of-a-kind fat reduction was achieved."
Now, it seems crazy to think there used to be limited options for the type of milk you wanted to order in your latte. Today, Starbucks's milks include whole, nonfat, 2 percent, soy, coconut, and, most recently, almond milk - Starbucks even uses separate milk steamers for dairy and nondairy beverages. Princess Gabriella Snuggles Up to Mom Charlene During a Rugby Game in Monaco
Princess Charlene turned the Sainte Devote Rugby Tournament in Monaco on Saturday into a royal family affair when she stepped out with husband Prince Albert II and 2-year-old Princess Gabriella. While the trio wasn't as animated as Kate Middleton and Prince William at a rugby match in Paris, the trio put on a sweet display as Gabriella cuddled up with her mom and buried her little head in her shoulder. Prior to the game, Albert and Charlene met with the teams and posed for pictures on the field. Unfortunately, Gabriella's twin brother, Prince Jacques, wasn't in attendance, but we did catch an adorable glimpse of him during a church service back in January.
