Superbug tuberculosis threatens global control efforts
Experts warn of possible epidemic over next decade
Todd Fisher Calls Niece Billie Lourd a "Pretty Powerful Gal" Following Her Mother's Death
Billie Lourd encountered unbelievable tragedy in December when both her mother and her grandmother, Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, passed away within one day of each other. The 24-year-old Scream Queens star's uncle Todd Fisher recently sat down with Entertainment Tonight's Nancy O'Dell to give an update on how his niece is doing. "She's dealing with two gigantic losses," he said. "These two girls - my girls, my mother and my sister, were big, big personalities [with a] big influence on Billie, myself, many people . . . There's a vacuum in the room and she's feeling it and we're all feeling it . . . I'm letting [Billie] breathe, you know? She needs to breathe. She needs to step back from all of this loss."
The Star Wars actress, 60, suffered a heart attack while on a flight from London to LAX. Her mother died only one day later after having a stroke in LA at the age of 84. "When I was standing in the room the day after my sister died and we're in the hospital and my mother was dying, I mean, I was more heartbroken watching my niece than I was for myself," Todd continued. "It was heart wrenching. The idea that somebody would have to deal with that kind of a loss back to back, moment to moment - I mean we'd just had this horrible loss and then here you are just a handful of hours later standing in a different hospital in a different room. It was astounding."
Since Carrie and Debbie's deaths, Billie's been staying positive on social media, posting throwback photos of her family and spending quality time with boyfriend Taylor Lautner. It's a strength she no doubt gets from her mom. "She's also genetically Carrie and Debbie," Todd added, while also thanking her father for his help in getting Billie through this difficult time. "I don't want to leave Bryan Lourd out of this. He's an awesome father and if it wasn't for him right now, we would be in a much tougher position. He has supported her beautifully. [But] you take those genes, and I think you've created a pretty powerful gal . . . She is a lot more like my mother even than Carrie. You know, she's a little like Carrie but she's a lot like my mother, which means she's going to be another Molly Brown."

Mom's Plea to Keep Sick Kids at Home - Even If You Don't Think They're Contagious
Keep sick kids home
Update: The original Imgur post has since been removed.
Original: After a holiday dinner with family turned into a potentially life-threatening infection for her little girl, one mom is speaking out to warn all parents.
"Please. If your child has a cold, or a flu, or an upper respiratory infection, please keep them home and take care of them," Imgur user LauraCorreadaSilva shared along with a photo of her toddler in the intensive care unit. Chloe ended up hospitalized after playing with her cousin who was sick yet still came over for Christmas dinner.
According to the upset mom, her brother claimed that his daughter had a lung infection but wasn't contagious. Chloe quickly developed respiratory syncytial virus infection and the 3-year-old already suffers from asthma. Her mom shared that RSV can be very dangerous for kids with preexisting lung conditions and she is now on antibiotics and a breathing machine with her arm bandaged to keep the toddler from pulling out her IV.
Laura wrote that Chloe is fully vaccinated for her age. She explained that she's sharing her family's story to hopefully prevent others from going through what her daughter is experiencing and "as a warning that even though you may think your kid isn't contagious this can be the outcome."

10 Influencers Just Designed New MAC Lipsticks - and They're Not What You'd Expect
If you take a look back at MAC's collaboration histories, you'll see that among big names like Lady Gaga and Zac Posen are up-and-coming artists, be they in the fields of fashion, music, or makeup artistry. That's why I wasn't surprised that when the brand announced its upcoming 10-piece lipstick collection designed by influencers (which POPSUGAR exclusively revealed earlier this year), MAC's team had selected a healthy mix of 10 world-famous and under-the-radar beauty pros.
According to Catherine Bomboy Dougherty, the senior vice president of public relations at MAC, that progressive attitude is in the very foundation of the brand. "It's what MAC was built on," she said in an interview with POPSUGAR.
The ideology of "all ages, all races, all sexes" is built into MAC's credo, but I'd believe that "all things chic" is written between the lines of that mission statement. I went on a press trip to MAC's official labs in Toronto to meet them and witness the creation of their bespoke lipsticks, so I can vouch that the 10 influencers selected exude an effortless sense of cool. But more importantly, they really know what they're talking about when it comes to makeup.
I viewed all the different levels of the formulation process, which included mood boards, essays about the ideal color, and hand-mixing pigment in a cosmetic chemist's lab. Each person creating their own lipstick was absolutely fastidious, often adjusting tones by practically invisible fractions to craft their perfect shade.
The perfect shades themselves surprised me. All but one of the influencers created their own variation of nude lipstick. The outlier chose red, which she would have liked to name Vic Woo (a combination of her own name and the iconic MAC Ruby Woo lipstick). I had expected the punchy, rainbow hues that many of them wear on their social channels, but when it came down to it, they simply wanted their neutral lipstick dreams realized. I totally respect this. The tones shifted from deep to light, cool to warm, and matte to sheer. While some may look similar to the naked eye, I saw firsthand that many of the amateur chemists had women of a wide range of skin tones test out their shade as they mixed them. It was clear that they wanted their formula to work well on a variety of skin tones.
"That's one of the reasons why we have such amazing respect for them," said Bomboy Dougherty. "They are really well-versed on the products, the textures, the finishes, the ingredients, the undertones." She laughed as she added, "I felt like when we were working with these people that some of them know our product better than we do sometimes."
That understanding of MAC formulas comes from the influencers' long relationships with the products, be they personal or professional. A lot of them started out as makeup artists before shifting their attention to social media. In fact, Samantha Ravndahl - known as @ssssamanthaa to her 2.4 million followers on Instagram - worked at a MAC counter in her early days of makeup artistry. "Our artists at the brand were so excited that we chose her," revealed Bomboy Dougherty. "She's part of that community and our artists internally really support that."
Sadly, you'll only be able to buy the colors made by your country's corresponding influencer(s). For example, if you're based in the United States, you will have shopping access exclusively to Gabriel Zamora and Laura Lee's lipsticks, while Brazilian MAC fans can just get Victoria Ceridono's shade. But believe me when I say that all 10 of these individuals are worth getting to know. Read on for more insight into their creative processes, including their fantasy names for their shades (which include inspiration from Disney princesses, furry friends, and their fans) and a glimpse at the shades before they launch later this year.
The Bachelorette's Rachel Goes on a Group Date . . . on The Ellen Show
It sounds like Rachel Lindsay is adjusting quite well to being the new Bachelorette. Now that filming has officially begun, the attorney couldn't help but gush about the men competing for her heart when she stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday. Even though she admitted that she's skeptical about finding love this season, she did reveal that she's already had her first kiss - and it swept her off her feet. But that's not even the best part! The appearance was actually a group date and she brought six of her suitors along with her. Oh yeah, they also take off their shirts and grind with audience members. We're just counting down the days until this season premieres on May 22.

Later, she celebrated her bachelorette in a white monogrammed swimsuit, and finally, it was time for her to pull out the rest of her bridal looks.

This H&M Gown Is Made Entirely of Recycled Plastic and Will Completely Blow Your Mind
H&M is in the business of defying expectations on the regular with its affordable fashion, but it's the work the brand is doing with its latest Conscious collection that will blow you away. Take for instance this dreamy, blush-pink gown that seems to float on air, modeled here by supermodel Natalia Vodianova, the face of the label's 2017 collection. You'd never guess that it was manufactured from recycled plastic collected from the shoreline. The very same plastic that's polluting our beach ecosystems was put to use to create a new sustainable polyester, called Bionic, used throughout the newest Conscious lineup. Launching in stores and online April 20, you can expect a full assortment of men's and women's casual- and formalwear, as well as kids' clothes and fragrance, available for the first time.
Read on for a first look at the gown in all its glory, or, as I like to think of it, the mind-blowing future of fashion.

This Eyeliner Trick Is the Ultimate Lazy-Girl Lash Hack
Traditionally, Spring makeup looks use formulas with dewy or satin finishes. After all, it's refreshing to let a bit of skin peek through after covering it up all Winter! But in this beauty tutorial, YouTube vlogger PrincessMei eschews tradition in favor of all matte products - and the result is stunning.
This flawless finished face gives off a vintage vibe thanks to the subtle pops of color. PrincessMei used a light dusting of TheBalm Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush in Argyle ($22) and NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes ($6) to add hints of muted rose to her complexion without overwhelming it.
What we're especially enamored by in this tutorial is how PrincessMei draws on her lower lashes. It nicely counteracts the bold effect of her cat eye, balancing the look out. She finishes her eyes by applying mascara exclusively to the fringe on her lower lid.
"It's a hassle to come home after a long day and wrestle off my mascara," she explained. The light touch of product she uses on her lower lashes (plus the faux, drawn-on ones) makes her eyes appear extralarge with minimal effort!

You Probably Don’t Know This Product Exists, but It’ll Save You $$$
Back in December, during a bitterly cold polar vortex, I was seven months pregnant and miserable. When everyone else in Chicago was zipped up to their eyeballs in puffy Winter coats, I was freezing my belly off in a parka that wouldn't zip up over it. Knowing I had a Winter pregnancy, I'd earlier toyed with the notion of buying an overpriced maternity coat or keeping my fingers crossed, hopeful that the high-end Canada Goose coat I'd invested in the previous Winter (a near necessity, I was told, to brave Chicago's icy Winter temps) would suffice this season.
But there I was, traversing an icy sidewalk and wheezing with every gust of wind that hit my uncovered legs and torso. A passerby, who clearly took pity on me, walked next to me and suggested I get a "belly extender," that it was a "literal lifesaver" for her when she was pregnant.
I had no idea what she meant, but when I got home and thawed out, I googled it. And there it was: the most brilliant wintertime parenting product that I never knew existed. Jacket extenders - cozy panels that zip into one's existing coat - for maternity.
I ordered one within minutes, from aptly named MakeMyBellyFit.com. The only tricky part was figuring out which zip adapter I'd need to order to ensure the extender zipped into my coat (who knew there were so many zipper styles?), but there was an easy-to-follow flow chart and, worst case, an email address to which you can share photos and talk out the solution with a customer service rep.
When it arrived, just in time for another frigid cold snap, I attached it to my coat and couldn't believe the results. I was warm! I was also a little disappointed I had suffered without it for several cold months, until I realized that the snow-resistant jacket extender had another crucial benefit that extended (pun intended) its shelf life: it made baby wearing on cold Winter days possible!
After I gave birth to my daughter in January, I was able to go for walks knowing she wouldn't have to be exposed to the elements. Because I can wear my newborn, it's helped me stave off a double-stroller purchase a bit longer. And I've heard from women who owned maternity coats that they still didn't have a solution for baby carrying - most maternity coats don't give enough zipped-up room at chest level, which is where the newborn tends to safely sit in most carriers.
So, if the timing makes sense for you - if you're pregnant or plan to wear a baby anytime near a wintry month, which in some climates can extend until March and April - buy it. And because most of the lineup is on sale as we enter Spring, buy it now. Your belly (and your future baby) will thank you.

This Is How Your Old Mascara Wands Can Help Animals in Need
Once our favorite mascara dries out, it's deemed useless and typically lands itself in the garbage can (unless you're a certified makeup hoarder who never throws anything out). But we finally found a way to put our old mascara wands to good use, and the best part is, it's for animals! The Appalachian Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina has asked for donations of specific items ahead of the opening of a new facility for injured and orphaned animals.
Among those items: clean mascara wands. Savannah Trantham, a wildlife refuge worker, explained how these seemingly useless old brushes can actually be great for animals. "We use mascara brushes to help remove fly eggs and larva from the fur of animals," she wrote on Facebook. "They work great because the bristles are so close together!" To clean the wands, just run them under hot water and clean with soap, and then send to the Appalachian Wild address.
This is such a great cause, and we definitely have some old brushes that can help these animals.
MAC's Edgy Metallic Lipstick Collection Will Make You Look Like a Sexy Cyborg
MAC Cosmetics captured our quirky, color-loving hearts with its extensive ColourRocker lipstick collection earlier this year. This was a hugely exciting launch because the shades ran the gamut from chartreuse and marigold to vermilion and turquoise. However, with the advent of chrome, metallic, and glitter pouts becoming incredibly trendy, we knew that it wouldn't be long until MAC infused a little more flair into these edgy shades.
As it turns out, we barely had to wait to see those suspicions manifest into reality. From March 23 to May 4, the brand will be selling its all-new Metallic Lips lipstick collection. The 18 shades (which will cost $17 each, the same price as the original lipsticks) will be infused with sparkle and pearl to create a metallic-matte look.
There's a glimmering emerald green and a foiled sapphire for those who want a more modern mouth and more classic colors like pink and red tricked out with shimmer. But if you're looking to get cyborg chic, there are plenty of silver, bronze, platinum, and copper hues to choose from.
Keep reading to see the stunning shades before shopping them on March 23!

New Study Confirms That Kids Get Their Intelligence From Mom
You have your mother to thank for all the great things you've accomplished. Our friends at YourTango discuss a study that traces intelligence back to your very own mama.
Hear that, dads?
You have more to thank your mother for than your perfect nose and that Amazon gift card you still have in your night table drawer. (Seriously! Use the damn thing, already!)
According to a study, all your smarts come from your mama, whether you like it or not.
Let's break down the science for those (like me, who hated biology class) who may be a little rusty.
Women have the XX chromosome and men have the XY chromosome. A chromosome is like a hard drive, that lives in our cells. It transports our genes to our offspring.
And according to this study, our intelligence comes straight from those really important X chromosomes; and since our mothers have TWO of those bad boys, it's twice as likely our intelligence comes from our maternal side.
Don't worry, dads! Your effort isn't for naught!
The same study suggests that the XY chromosomes contribute to the physical aspect of your children. Of course, these tests were all done on mice, but there's a pretty good chance this information is accurate for humans, too.
According to Psychology Spot, "Those with an extra dose of maternal genes developed a bigger head and brain, but had little bodies. Conversely, those with an extra dose of paternal genes had small brains and larger bodies."
So. Many. Jokes. But I won't. I can't. I won't!
But it's not ALL science that helps make us geniuses:
"The importance of the emotional relationship for the development of the brain has been demonstrated by researchers at the University of Washington, who revealed for the first time that a secure bond and the love of the mother are crucial for the growth of some parts of the brain. These researchers have analyzed for seven years the way mothers relate with their children and have found that when supported emotionally their children and adequately gratified their intellectual and emotional needs, at age 13 the hippocampus of the kids was 10% greater than that of children of mothers who were emotionally distant. It is worth mentioning that the hippocampus is an area of the brain associated with memory, learning and stress response."

Are Your Workouts Too Intense? The Pros and Cons of HIIT
Is there such a thing as too much HIIT? Can you go too hard? Billy Polson, founder of DIAKADI and CSCS, thinks so.
Why? He says it can mess with building muscle and metabolism. "Extreme cardio workouts like 60-minute Spin classes or high-heart-rate-only boot camps are often too much cardio for the body to allow for effective body fat reduction," Billy said. "This intensive volume of cardio will often cause your body to stall its fat reduction, instead reducing your muscle mass and slowing your metabolism."
But . . . does that mean we have to skip our favorite classes? We're not quite ready to let go! Especially because we always feel so good from that endorphin rush and the energy in the room. "I know these classes can be great fun with the high of pushing your body to the limit and the inspiration of the group around you, but I recommend a maximum of only one of these a week," Billy said.
Let's say that we want to keep going to our favorite HIIT classes - but want to avoid the risk of losing muscle from too much cardio. To get another perspective on this, we asked personal trainer and Barry's Bootcamp instructor Erica Stenz for her thoughts, and she agrees that you can do too much HIIT, but there are ways to keep yourself safe.
"As with anything in excess, too much of HIIT training every week can be more detrimental than positive for sure," Erica told POPSUGAR. "But it all depends on your duration, your recovery - like stretching and foam rolling - your nutrition, and your body!"
She recommends HIIT more than once a week, crediting improved muscle memory as not only a benefit of your consistency but also a way to stay safe. "It's important to condition your body for multiple days of high-intensity training every week - that's the main reason why I recommend my clients take at least two to three Barry's classes a week, versus once a week or only once in a while. You will gain muscle memory and strength to prevent you from injuring yourself."
Equinox trainer Kyle Panela says if you're into this kind of group fitness, it's imperative to have a strong base before getting into fast-paced classes. "Stamina, coordination, mobility, strength, and form are all factors that should be determined before jumping into a class," he said, noting that without any prior experience, you could get hurt (hence why Barry's Bootcamp is listed on ClassPass as "Advanced" - they're not kidding!).
Kyle recommends doing a little homework before trying a new class. Is the class advanced? Do you have the strength and skill set to take on this challenge, or do you need a little more practice and fine-tuning? What can you do to prepare? "You should definitely research or even watch the class before you sign up for it," he said. "It's crucial to gain knowledge of certain movement patterns through strength training - hip hinges, scapular retraction, proper squats, and good thoracic, shoulder, hip, and knee mobility - before doing more dynamic or complex movements."
And that way, no matter what schedule you set up for yourself - Billy's recommended one class per week, or Erica's two to three - you're physically prepared to have a safe, fun, effective workout and reap the benefits of the endorphin rush and "high."
Back to Billy's warning of muscle loss: Erica believes this all comes down to nutrition. "For people who are worried about muscle loss in HIIT, I recommend taking a BCAA supplement before their workout to prevent muscle loss, and also drinking a carb-and-protein-packed shake within 30 minutes after the workout [to help with muscle recovery]." She says the best way to achieve your desired results with HIIT training is "with the right balance of nutrition and body maintenance (like stretching, foam rolling, massages, etc)."
Billy maintains that if your goal is weight loss, "Twenty minutes of interval [training], only two days a week is much better for assisting with fat reduction." He understands that it might seem counter-intuitive to what you've been taught: "For many, this idea of reducing cardio to lose fat is a very scary step to try, as most of us are still following the old philosophy that cardio is the best way to burn fat."
If you're still apprehensive, Billy says to give yourself a two-week trial away from your typical cardio schedule. "Do a prior weigh-in and measurements (body fat test included). Then take two full weeks where you nail your nutrition perfectly and remove all endurance cardio sessions that are over 20 minutes long, only doing two 20-minute cardio sessions and four strength-training sessions each week."
He admitted that it might not work for everyone, as everyone's body is different. "Worst-case scenario, you can go right back to your old routine after two weeks if this doesn't work. But trust me, you will see better results."
Our suggestion? Try both. Like we said - everyone's body is different. There's no cookie-cutter plan for everyone. It's also important to note that not everyone's goal is weight loss; in fact, many women are working out to improve their mental health, build endurance and strength, and even socialize. As long as you're listening to your body, staying safe, and consulting with a doctor (and even your trainer), then try these different methods to see what works best for you.

9 Things You Never Knew About Your Child's Day at School, Straight From a Teacher
While parents understand that a lot happens in between dropping their child off at school and seeing them at the end of the day, many don't recognize exactly what it's like. Along with the books, tests, and classroom assignments, your child's world is revolving around actively turning into a little person within his or her classroom community. In order for parents to better relate to their children and understand their daily experiences, one anonymous teacher shared nine things about a typical school day that most parents don't realize - but should.
They turn into your mini me - for better or for worse.
Why your child acts or speaks a certain way usually all makes sense to teachers come parent-teacher conferences. But your mannerisms and expressions aren't the only things your little one brings to the classroom; they also share your team spirit, work ethic, and drive - or lack thereof. Your problems also have a way of creeping into your child's day and teachers as well as their friends definitely pick up on it. The impact of a fight you had that your little one overheard or a chaotic morning can be observed in your child even after you've forgotten about it.
Recess means something different for every child.
Most kids love recess, but it can be for two very different reasons. While this time is an opportunity to go outside and run around with friends, some embrace it as a chance to spend time with their teacher in a more personal setting. Sometimes recess is when your child is thriving on the court or making new friends, but it can also be when they are developing confidence and feeling secure in the classroom setting thanks to some extra time inside instead of out.
Just because they do it at home doesn't mean they can do it at school.
Oftentimes parents are frustrated with tests that are marked incorrect because they know their child can do it - they even saw them answering those questions correctly at home! However, this can be a warped sense of reality and parents need to understand what they see at home isn't what happens at school because of their involvement. Parents who hover too much during homework time or "help" with assignments are actually hurting their child's growth because when they have to do the same work at school (and independently), they don't know how. These kids don't know how to correctly answer questions in school even though they got them right at home because they don't know how to complete all of the steps with out some extra help from you. Your involvement outside of school can hurt them in the classroom and leave them struggling even more.
Every child has a role within the classroom community.
Your kids are essentially dealing the same politics that parents experience in the adult world. As kids interact within their classroom community, roles are unconsciously given and both kids and teachers work within these labels. Children know who the kind kid is if they're having a bad day, the troublemaker, and the good student, and they naturally embrace their own roles while finding where they fit. Where their spot is on the carpet is also a good indicator of their role - teachers often place the kids they can depend on to pay attention in the back or a shy child next to another who has a reputation for always being friendly. This gives students an equal opportunity to learn within those roles.
Hurt feelings aren't always a bad thing.
School isn't just about reading and writing; it's also about learning social skills that are equally important. During their time in the classroom, children are learning how to become people. Kids can be mean - oftentimes because they don't realize - but when your child's feelings get hurt during the day, it's an invaluable opportunity for them to learn how to react in an appropriate way and recover from the upset.
They blossom when you drop them.
Just because your child seems shy or clingy around you doesn't mean that's how they still are moments after you leave. Some children really do transform into completely different people when they aren't guided by you and it's important for parents to never assume that their child takes on the same role at school as they do at home.
There's way more joy than you realize.
Despite the dread of homework and agony of tests, school can be a bright area for your child. Kids still laugh and play throughout the day and within that, they are learning how to communicate, be good citizens, and work within a community. They might come home upset about the amount of work or a mean kid, but that doesn't mean that there weren't smiles and laughter during the day.
You're probably thinking about them way more than they're thinking about you.
Separation can be hard for some students, but despite the drop-off meltdowns, kids quickly forget the upset after their tears have dried. While many parents spend all morning thinking about how upset their child was and worrying about how he or she is doing, most kids quickly recover and don't realize how much they missed you until you are united again. Even if your child was hysterical when you said goodbye, chances are you weren't the focus of the rest of their day.
Their teacher has their best interests at heart - even if he or she is teaching them Common Core.
Most teachers are just as dedicated to your child's development as you are. Even if it seems like what your child is doing is a waste of time, you have to trust that your child is going to gain something from it, even if it wasn't what or how you learned. If your child comes home with what seems like a ridiculous assignment, often it's because his or her teacher doesn't have a choice in the matter and is embracing it to make the most of the learning opportunity for your kid.
The Best Piece of Parenting Advice 1 Stressed-Out Mom Got From Her Dad
After having her first child, Constance Hall was pretty overwhelmed. The Australian blogger was finding it hard dealing with one baby and asked her dad how her grandmother possibly managed to do it with 11 kids. Her father's response was simple yet powerful: she wasn't given half of the pressure that moms today are.
"She didn't have to go to the bank, the supermarket everyday, she wasn't expected to look a million bucks straight after birth, she never put pressure on her kids to have reached all of their milestones by the age of three weeks, and have the house clean," Constance wrote on Facebook. "She just hung out with her kids and enjoyed them."
In contrast, Constance looked at how she and fellow women cope with all of the stress they are put under as moms in 2017. "Well, a lot of us don't actually enjoy our kids and we are only half present for them all of the time due to the constant pressure to have everything perfect," she admitted. "To go to the gym, answer that email, pay that bill, cook that organic kale, blend it, get it into a patty so no one knows it's kale, get to the doctors, the washing, gas in the car, color your god d*mn grays, make the kids lunches because if you order them again you will be JUDGED!"
Constance realized that due to all the chaos she was missing out on something more important: time to be present with her children instead of just half-listening to them while preoccupied with something else. Part of what made Constance realize how important it is to block out the other noise when she's with her kids was participating in a simple experiment with other adults.
"We partnered up and told a story; halfway through the story our partners were ordered to stop listening. They looked away, yawned, preoccupied their minds, replied to an email while we were telling them something we believed interesting.
And guess how it made me feel? Boring, embarrassed for not being able to interest anyone, unworthy, and insignificant.
Is that what this busy life is making my kids feel?"
As difficult as it may be each and every day to not let the other burdens get to her, this mom is now focusing on time with her kids and how her stress could be making them feel. "And I'm not going to let outside pressures and 'Super Mom' ideals take that away from me."
After This Child Nearly Hanged Herself on the Playground, 1 Mom Is Warning All Parents
Marley Oster is lucky to have Madison as her friend. Not only because the girls get along so well, but also because the 8-year-old saved Marley's life. When Marley went for one last ride down a school slide during recess, the safety clip on the hat she was wearing got stuck and the string nearly strangled the child. Her mom, Gail, explained that as the hat got caught, her child kept sliding and it pulled her neck back into a "strangulation position," leaving the 6-year-old hanging and unable free herself.
Madison climbed down the slide and worked to free her friend, but because the plastic clip was jammed in a crack, it took time. Marley was rushed to the doctor and left with rope burn across her neck. According to Gail, her doctor let them know that if Marley had been stuck for 45 seconds longer, her windpipe could have collapsed. She also could've broken her neck if another kid had gone down the slide immediately after her.
"Please all parents either check your child's hat that the clip releases under pressure or cut the cord completely off the hat," Gail pleaded on Facebook along with raw photos of Marley's injuries.
This is not the first local schoolyard strangulation, so as a result, public schools in South Australia have mandated that cords and straps from hats and hoodies be removed. Gail had just purchased this hat for Marley and wants other parents to realize that a plastic clip isn't enough to keep their kids safe.
"I bought it on Wednesday, I had it on her head on Thursday, and even now if you try to unclip the hat it's very hard, it doesn't unclip," she told the Daily Mail. "It's not an isolated incident. A lot of parents have said these hats have done this kind of damage."
Although the school district's ban against strings on the playground is a step in the right direction, Gail wants all drawstrings to be forbidden. "No cords and no clips, it's a hazard. Thankfully, the parents that have been affected with these hats, we've been able to take our kids home. But one day that won't happen," she said. "There will be a child that dies, there will be a family that gets that phone call."

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes With Household Ingredients
We all know that it's bad for us to use dirty makeup brushes on our skin - come on, you wash your face twice a day, but how often do you actually give your tools the same kind of love? If you've been skipping because you're worried about hurting your brushes, we've got an easy DIY way to clean them all up safely. And don't forget to find the makeup brush that's right for you too!
Ingredients:
Olive oil
Antibacterial soap
Steps:
Step 1: Mix two parts antibacterial dish soap to one part of the extra-virgin olive oil on a clean plate (don't use paper plate, as the oil will seep through).
Step 2: Grab your first brush and wet it slightly with lukewarm water. Make sure the brush stays bristle-side down throughout the entire process. If water gets into the ferrule (the middle tube part that holds everything together) of the brush, it can loosen the glue, causing the bristles to fall out.
Step 3: Dip the damp brush into the soap mixture and coat it thoroughly. Next, work the mixture into the bristles using the palm of your hand and fingers. Continue until the soapy residue is makeup free.
Step 4: Rinse the brushes under lukewarm water until no soap runs from the bristles.
Step 5: Roll a dish towel like you would a yoga mat, and drape a paper towel over it so that most of the paper towel hangs off. (The paper towel should look like a slide coming down from the dish towel). Next, arrange the brush so the top of the handle sits on top of the towel, pitching the rest of the brush down onto the paper towel. This will allow your brushes to dry on a slant, while keeping moisture away from the ferrule.
Repeat with remaining brushes. Some make take two washings to get completely clean, depending on the amount of residue left behind. Allow them to dry overnight, and repeat about once a month.

How to Hack the Secret Menu at Chick-fil-A
I've been a Chick-fil-A (CFA) fan for years. Growing up, it was a staple after soccer games and it got me through finals in college at the University of Arizona. Colleagues at work even joke with me about my love for CFA. It's pretty much a weekly staple. Last month I had the chance to visit the Chick-fil-A headquarters in Atlanta and got a full inside scoop at the place where you "Eat Mor Chikin."
Visiting the headquarters was such a special treat. The campus is beautiful, featuring 73 wooded acres, including a gym, walking/running trails, outdoor work space, a cafe, and a massive 30,000-square-foot test kitchen. More than 1,000 employees work at the corporate headquarters. I got to hang out with the culinary and development team for a day and learn all about the history of the company, how they develop its top-secret recipes, and other fun mind-blowing facts. I even created some fun recipes using some of my favorite Chick-fil-A menu items, so stay tuned!
The Secret About the Chick-fil-A Secret Menu
Chick-fil-A may not have a secret menu, but folks can pretty much order whatever they want (within reason). An easy way to do this is via the Chick-fil-A One App where you can customize your entire order from your phone. Some of my favorites?
- Kick up the heat of a Spicy Chicken Sandwich by adding zesty buffalo sauce and pepper jack cheese.
- Add bacon and herb ranch sauce to the Chick-fil-A Deluxe for a bacon ranch sandwich.
- Get your sandwich lettuce-wrapped for a low-carb option.
- My go-to breakfast in the mornings: a Chicken Biscuit with egg white, pepper jack cheese, and, depending on my mood, Chick-fil-A sauce or strawberry jam!
- Ask for vanilla Icedream and no ice in your Dr. Pepper for a Dr. Pepper float!
How to Hack Having Chick-fil-A on Sunday
While we respect that the restaurant gives one day each week for its employees to spend time off with their families and friends, what are you supposed to do when you're craving Chick-fil-A? Just order one of its catering trays. The chicken comes cooked and chilled. Reheat in the oven at your convenience on Sunday.
How to "Bring Back" the Chicken Biscuit
When Chick-fil-A announced it was removing the popular item from its breakfast menu last year, social media went into a tizzy. Unfortunately, according to sales, the seemingly popular item wasn't that popular at all. Fortunately, if you loved the Spicy Chicken Biscuit, you can still find it at select locations, but keep in mind, you can always customize a chicken biscuit using the Chick-fil-A One App. Hack the item by adding some honey and Texas Pete sauce to each side of the biscuit to get that sweet Southern heat!
The Most Popular Sauces
Every fast food chain has a signature sauce, and Chick-fil-A is no exception. The fast food joint offers seven sauces, with the most famous being the barbecue sauce. It was replaced with a new smokehouse flavor until fans went to social and started #BringBacktheBBQ, to which Chick-fil-A obliged. Polynesian is a fan favorite as well, outnumbered only by the namesake Chick-fil-A Sauce, a combo of honey mustard, barbecue, and ranch.
Some Bizzare Combo Requests
If you thought dipping your french fries in your milkshake was weird, one Chick-fil-A employee shared that a popular request is a vanilla milkshake with a pickle juice floater. I'm curious if those customers are pregnant!
Guacamole, Cheese Sauce, Orange Dream Milkshakes, and More
Yes, you can find all of those and more optional unique menu items across the country. Guacamole is an optional item on the West Coast, and cheese sauce is an optional item in the Northeast. But there are also stores across the country that serve specialty items like orange dream milkshakes and even baked potatoes!
The Lemonade Is Legit
Like Beyoncé's Lemonade, Chick-fil-A's lemonade is made with water, sugar, and fresh lemons! That's it. I pick up a couple gallons of the lemonade every week during the Summer, as it's incredibly delicious. Freshly squeezed by hand and made from scratch daily in each restaurant, it's a staple at Chick-fil-A. Did you know Chick-fil-A is the largest purchaser of Sunkist lemons? It squeezes over 250 million lemons a year! In addition to the Frosted Lemonade (hand-spun vanilla Icedream with lemonade), Chick-fil-A recently added Frosted Strawberry Lemonade, which adds strawberry puree to the original recipe, giving it a sweet, seasonal twist for Spring.
How to Score Free Chick-fil-A For a Year
Anytime a new Chick-fil-A restaurant opens, the company celebrates with a signature First 100 event. Local residents from around the community are invited to camp out, and the first 100 customers are awarded free Chick-fil-A meals for a year!

There's Finally an Emoji For Moms Who Breastfeed
After much anticipation and an official request made to Unicode by Rachel Lee, a badass nurse, back in 2016, iOS's newest lineup of emoji features one new character for moms who breastfeed. That's right: a breastfeeding emoji is officially coming to your Apple devices on June 30!
While the discussion over whether or not breastfeeding in public is appropriate continues to spark debate, this new emoji should be considered a win for all moms who find themselves in need for the perfect graphic to represent their intimate feeding time with their little ones.
The emoji features a baby breastfeeding in "cradle hold," which according to Lee's proposal is the "the most popular method of holding a baby when breastfeeding." Other emoji coming this year: the hijab emoji, a hedgehog, and a giraffe (perhaps inspired by the viral hit April).
