Don't Shop For Tequila Again Until You Learn These 13 Terms
Image Source: Flickr user Hugh Bell
Perhaps you have, like me, stood in a liquor aisle and gazed at an array of tequilas on sale, wondering which was the best to buy. To the unitiated, any tequila will do after thinking about cost, bottle size, and how you'll drink it. It makes sense to want something tasty for a sipping drink, whereas one might be less discerning about a tequila bound for a blender as part of a margarita.
But there's a lot more that goes into to tequila than those simple initial factors. There's a whole glossary of terms that insiders in the tequila-making industry and serious tequila-lovers use. We spoke with Antonio Rodriguez, who is the production manager for the storied tequila brand Patrón. Its tequila is made from blue agave in the Mexican region of Jalisco, and Antonio spoke to me from their production facilities, where he was on a break from overseeing the company's time-honored process.
This, according to Antonio, is what everyone needs to know before they find themselves wandering in the tequila aisle.
- 100% Agave Tequila: To Antonio, this is one of the biggest things to look for. "For good, high-quality, it has to be labeled '100% agave tequila,'" he said. All Patrón is labeled as such.
- Tequila: Anything labeled just tequila is based 51% on agave, with the remaining alcoholic sugar coming from different sources. As a result, Antonio said, "the quality is very different." Sometimes this is referred to as "mixto" tequila.
- Silver: This refers to pure, unaged tequila coming straight from the distilling process.
- Reposado: This tequila is aged in barrels for at least two months.
- Joven: This type of tequila is in between silver and reposado; it's been aged for less than two months but includes a bit of aged tequila.
- Añejo: Tequila aged for a year.
- Extra Añejo: The extra designation is added when tequila is aged for three years.
- The NOM Number: This is a number on bottles of Mexican-made tequilas, which allow drinkers to find out more about the production facility in which their product was made.
Image Source: Flickr user drpavloff - Agave: This is the plant from which tequila is made. According to Antonio, it takes seven years to grow before it's ready to be used in the tequila-making process. It's a hardy plant that grows without needing much tending, just rainwater. The market for agave is always in flux depending on global demand for the plant.
- Abocado: This tequila has additives, like caramel coloring or glycerin. Current rules for tequila production don't require that brands reveal the additives on their labels, but Patrón is additive free.
- Mezcal: Mezcal is another spirit made from agave plants. Antonio explained that mezcal is a great deal smokier than tequila, partially because it's made using volcanic stones. It's usually made in Southern Mexico, whereas tequila is made in the central part of the country.
- Proof: The amount of alcohol in a tequila; often, the range is between 70 and 110 proof. The amount of alcohol in a tequila has an impact on the flavor.
- The worm: You won't find a worm in a good bottle, like Patrón. "There are some other agave spirits, usually the very low quality ones, which used to put a worm inside the bottle," Antonio explained, referring to mezcal. "Nowadays, if you see a bottle with that I'd highly recommend not to drink it."

After Hearing a Woman's Racist Diatribe on the Subway, This Latina Spoke Up
Tracey Tong was riding the subway in New York City when she overheard a fellow passenger verbally attacking two Muslim passengers. After the woman repeatedly told the couple that she didn't approve of them residing in the United States - "I don't like it," the woman kept repeating - Tracey stepped in.
Though other passengers had already tried to stop the disturbing conversation, the brave Chinese-Peruvian 23-year-old approached the woman by asking one simple question: "Are you from here?" After learning that the woman was Puerto Rican, Tracey replied in Spanish and said, "Here, we need to all unite together. We don't need to be against another person. That is absolutely ridiculous and disrespectful."
Meanwhile, an onlooker captured the entire exchange. In the shocking video, Tracey continues to calmly talk the woman down and, while she may not have changed the woman's mind, she certainly stood up for what was right. In one moment, Tracey confidently said, "We're all in this together. Whether we like what's going on in the government or not. F*ck it. We gotta deal with it. You're a grown woman. Suck it up and defend your brothers and sisters." Watch the exchange in its entirety above.

If You Want to Lose Weight, This Meal Should Be Your Biggest
How many calories you eat in a day has a direct impact on whether you'll lose, gain, or maintain your weight. If you're looking to lose, creating a calorie deficit is a must, but when you eat your calories also plays a role. Should you have an even supply of calories throughout the day, or should you try to eat most of your calories by a certain time?
According to certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition, "making lunch your biggest meal" could be the change you need in order to see results. A recent study of 80 women, ages 18 to 45, found that having lunch as the biggest meal of the day increased weight loss but also helped with blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. The study also showed that over 12 weeks, those having lunch as the biggest meal lost 12.8 pounds and those with dinner as the biggest meal lost 9.6 pounds.
Pretty interesting, huh? Just changing when to eat the most calories could be the edge you need to see results that you aren't seeing from a healthy diet alone. You have more time to burn off those calories, which means less stored calories overnight.
Leslie suggests trying to "eat 40 percent of your daily calories at lunch. So for a 1,500-calorie diet, which would be common for weight loss, it would be a 600-calorie lunch. That leaves a 450-calorie breakfast and a 450-calorie dinner. Or if you prefer snacking, a 400-calorie breakfast, a 100-calorie snack, and a 400-calorie dinner.
It seems easy enough to make this change, and not only could it help with weight loss, but eating less at night could also help prevent bloating or heartburn and help you sleep better. It's worth a try! Remember that just because you're making lunch your highest-calorie meal, it's not a green light to go for unhealthy calories! Keep the mantra in mind, "think of food as fuel," and make sure your meal contains protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

Meet the Megaformer, the Fitness Contraption Celebrities Are Obsessed With
The machine might appear a bit intimidating at first, but surely if Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara, Michelle Obama, Vanessa Hudgens, Calvin Harris, and Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio can master it, the Lagree Fitness Method must be worth it, right?!
Meet the Megaformer, the machine behind the innovative workout that is shaping bodies all over Hollywood.
The Backstory
Developed by Sebastien Lagree, a self-described former chubby kid who wanted to merge the nurturing approach of Pilates with the more rigorous approach of bodybuilding, the Megaformer was originally developed in 2005 after two years of working with an engineering team.
"I needed to devise a workout that's going to give you the same kind of result [as high-impact activities like weightlifting and running] - it's going to chisel you and sculpt you and tone you - but it's not going to destroy you," Lagree said of the high-intensity, low-impact workout that the Megaformer is designed for.
"Physical fitness is more than being able to run a long distance or lift heavy weights at the gym; or how long you worked out or at what intensity," according to Lagree's website. "While these are important measures of fitness, they only address single areas. Physical fitness is made up of five basic elements: cardio, strength, endurance, body composition, and flexibility." And Legree's workouts address all five elements in well under an hour.
How Does the Workout Work?
So how exactly does the Megaformer allow users to address all five basic elements of fitness without necessitating joint-damaging high-impact movements? The machine was carefully constructed to precisely enact effective resistance, range of motion, and angle, and the specific workouts that Lagree has designed adhere to strict tempo and duration standards to ensure that users reach the proper threshold of exercise intensity to stimulate the body's adaptive changes.
The machine uses adjustable spring-loaded resistance to allow for a customizable resistance load that is engaged via slow, deliberate movements that activate slow-twitch muscle fibers, increasing stamina and oxygen capacity of your muscles and allowing the body to burn energy for longer periods of time. That last part is the major key to how Lagree's 40-minute workouts produce rapid changes in his clients' physiques - while slow-twitch muscle fibers are not prone to hypertrophy (bulking up) like fast-twitch fibers, they are better suited for burning fat. Simply put, working out on the Megaformer will turn your body into a lean, fat-burning machine. No wonder it's so popular.
What to Expect in a Megaformer Class
A typical 40-minute routine will consist of a core warmup comprised of movements with wacky names like "catfish," "spoon," and "wheelbarrow" (picture an ab rollout performed against spring-loaded resistance), about 20 minutes of lower-body exercises like "skater," "spider lunge," and "mega donkey" (like a quadruped banded hip extension), and a series of upper-body moves that might include "swimmer," "mega preacher curl," and "sexy back" (think of a modified triceps kickback that works the back of the arms as well as the entire back). So yeah, in case the exercise names didn't give it away, it's unlike anything you've ever done before.
Lagree Fitness studios have infiltrated New York and Los Angeles and are now making their way to the rest of the country. We may not all have Sofia Vergara's genes or Kim K's, um, assets, but at least now we can have their fitness routine. Find a studio near you with Lagree's studio locator.

Thirst Levels Are on the Rise Due to This Photo of Ryan Gosling and Jon Hamm
Less than a month after heating up the South by Southwest red carpet in Austin, Ryan Gosling ventured up to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for a CinemaCon event. After discussing his upcoming sci-fi movie with Harrison Ford, Blade Runner 2049, Ryan stepped off stage to pose for a few photos backstage. There, he bumped into a very scruffy Jon Hamm, giving us a bromance fantasy that we never even knew we wanted. With Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal already taken, the Mad Men actor is a pretty great alternative, don't you think? Just close your eyes and imagine the buddy comedy movie potential . . . and then open them so you can scroll through the rest of these photos.

While Ben looked lovingly at his fiancée, Laura flashed a huge grin as she cradled her baby bump. Ever since announcing their engagement in October, the two have had no problem showing off their sweet love in public, and we can't get enough.
19 Celebrity Mistresses Who Became the Main Squeeze
Love is funny, you know? Sometimes you meet "the one" when you're both single and ready to mingle, and other times . . . not so much. We all know the story of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie falling in love on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith while he was technically still married to Jennifer Aniston, and LeAnn Rimes's relationship with Eddie Cibrian involved infidelity on both sides. In addition to those couples, there are a handful of other stars who happened to meet their current loves while they happened to be taken - and it's a habit that goes back decades.

Kelly Rowland Breaks From The Voice For a Fun Beach Day With Her Son
Kelly Rowland is currently in Australia to judge the new season of The Voice, and on Monday, the former Destiny's Child singer hit the beach with her 2-year-old son, Titan. Kelly showed off her curves in a colorful one-piece and appeared to be in a good mood as she basked in the sun. Kelly rang in her 36th birthday just last month, and she shared a photo of little Titan having fun at her bash on Instagram last week. "I wasn't the only one who had such a good time celebrating my birthday with our family and friends. 💙 #Fbf," she captioned it. While it's not clear if Kelly's husband, Tim Witherspoon, joined them, Kelly clearly enjoyed her day at the beach.
Lady Gaga Performs in the Most Expensive Hats We've Ever Seen
For a while, there had been one accessory Lady Gaga rarely left home without: a wide-brim, Gladys Tamez hat. The star paired them with a variety of her outfits, and while she seems to favor the pink design that appeared on her Joanne album cover, she's stepped out in yellow and dark-colored options as well. To some, the piece may seem somewhat tame - versatile and pretty normal for Gaga.
But the singer's hat at the 2016 Victoria's Secret Fashion show definitely proved her days of outrageous fashion choices are far from over. On stage, Lady Gaga once again wore a Gladys Tamez piece, but this time it was embellished, had fringe, and cost a whopping $1 million. The brand said it was an "an homage to the million dollar fantasy bra," and looking at it, we were pretty impressed - not to mention jealous.
Scroll through to see the expensive piece from a few different angles, then see how Lady Gaga has worn similar styles off duty, and hold out for her next performance in one. Want one for yourself? Shop a (less expensive) pick from the brand ahead.

Kendall Jenner's Styling Hack Lets You Get the Most Out of Your Trench Coat
Models have access to some of the best stylists in the industry, so it's no surprise that that they pick up a couple of styling tricks. Case in point? Kendall Jenner. The 21-year-old model was supporting her friend Cara Delevingne's latest sci-fi movie Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets at an event in LA on Monday night, and showed off a genius styling hack as she posed with Lily Donaldson.
Kendall wore a belted, silk trench coat as a dress, and styled it with beige sock ankle boots and chunky necklaces. This trick will let you get the most mileage out of your spring outerwear and it's easy to copy if you have the right trench coat. Have a look and try it out for yourself with the pieces we've listed below.
Look Back on Lady Gaga's Mesmerizing Super Bowl Outfits
Ever since Lady Gaga landed in Houston, she had been teasing her Super Bowl halftime show and the outfits she would wear. Of course, the singer did not disappoint. After taking the field in a Vera Wang coordinated set before kickoff, she hung out backstage in a monogrammed jersey and finally took the stage in an Atelier Versace silver bedazzled bodysuit with matching boots.
For part of the performance, Gaga wore the Swarovski-covered suit sans decoration, but soon enough, she slipped into a gold spiked jacket and later nixed the top half of the design for crystal panties and a slashed tee reminiscent of a football jersey. Scroll to see how Brandon Maxwell styled Lady Gaga for all of her appearances at the 2017 Super Bowl, and gear up for her headlining gig at Coachella, where she's sure to sport something just as eccentric.
This Hijab-Wearing Model Is Making Major Waves in the Fashion Industry
Last year, Halima Aden's name started trending because she wore a burkini (a modest swimsuit) in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant. Fast-forward to 2017 and Halima, a first-generation Somali-American, not only signed with IMG Models - the same agency that represents Gigi and Bella Hadid - but also landed a photo shoot for CR Fashion Book, run by renowned stylist Carine Roitfeld, and made her runway debut in Kanye West's Yeezy Season 5 show. The model then flew to Milan to walk the runways of Alberta Ferretti and Max Mara.
"Halima is breaking boundaries of beauty and perception by being herself," said Carine, who revealed the 19-year-old caught her eye. "I find this incredibly inspiring, and I know she will be an icon."
The 10th edition of the book was released on March 2, and Halima graces one of the two covers in her hijab. When asked about her being called a hero, Halima said:
"I wish I could tell them, 'Hey, I'm not a perfect Muslim.' A lot of people had a misconception that I would be the perfect poster child for Islam. So I got a lot of Instagram comments like, 'Oh, you don't have your neck covered, you're not a Muslim!' My thing is, stop judging women, especially if you're a man, because you don't know the responsibility that comes with wearing a hijab."
Keep your eyes on on Halima, because this future top model is just getting started.

Kendall Jenner posted a picture of herself in a pair of striped moto pants from designer Unravel Project while gal pal Hailey Baldwin followed suit in a bright red Ferrari jacket from the sustainable shop Sami Miro Vintage. Sofia Richie also shifted gears by wearing a head-to-toe look from the fashion brand Each x Other. Each of their looks is worthy of first prize and deserves to be seen outside of a Formula One racetrack.
Check out their looks and push your wardrobe into full throttle by buying a couple of race-car-inspired looks for yourself.
A Ghost Story: Casey Affleck's New Film Isn't Scary, but It Is Haunting
Fresh off his Oscar win for best actor for his role in Manchester by the Sea, Casey Affleck is back with another indie drama, A Ghost Story. While the movie received critical acclaim at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, this first look will certainly leave you with a lot of questions. From the same company that brought you The Witch and Moonlight, the film centers around Affleck's character as he haunts the house he was living in with his wife (Rooney Mara) after his death while wearing nothing but a white sheet with holes it in. See the full trailer above before the film hits theaters on July 7.
Peter Parker Takes on the Vulture in This Cool-as-Hell Spider-Man: Homecoming Trailer
Sure, this is the third time Spider-Man has been rebooted for the big screen over the last couple of decades, but who's counting when the movie looks this fun? The new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming sees the young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) mastering his spidey senses yet again, but this time he has plenty of help from fellow superhero Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). That also should remind you that this is a Marvel movie, as young Peter is now an Avenger. Not to mention it looks like a Marvel movie, rad-looking visuals and action sequences and all. Keep your eyes peeled for Zendaya, as well as Michael Keaton as the movie's villain the Vulture (who looks pretty terrifying, to say the least). Spider-Man: Homecoming comes out on July 7.

Dancing With the Stars: Heather Morris Breaks It Down on the Ballroom Floor
Heather Morris brought her infectious personality (and signature moves) when she hit the ballroom floor on Dancing With the Stars. The former Glee star incorporated a little bit of her hip-hop background as she danced the jive on stage. Even though her partner Maks Chmerkovskiy had to sit this one out due to a calf injury, Alan Bersten stepped up to the plate for a shoe-tapping number. It's was almost, dare we say, gleeful!
Demi Lovato Makes Out With Ed Sheeran During "Ew!" - Well, Sort Of
Jimmy Fallon has welcomed several stars to the "Ew!" couch on The Tonight Show over the years, and his latest guest was none other than Demi Lovato. On Monday, the "Confident" singer made a surprise appearance as Emily, one of Sara's "besties forever and ever," and the two took turns snapping emoji selfies while they prepped for their big Spring dance. "What if a boy wants to kiss us?" Emily wonders. Sara then whips out "crush cushions" with Ed Sheeran and Mario Lopez's faces printed on them, and the two get into intense makeout sessions with their pillows before they're rudely interrupted by Sara's stepdad, Gary. Prepare to LOL and watch the clip above now.
Simone Biles's DWTS Performance Is So Fiery She Almost Burned a Hole in the Floor
Grab a glass of water, because Simone Biles's latest performance on Dancing With the Stars is burnin' up. The Olympic gymnast heated up the dance floor with her moves (and incredible figure) when she danced the cha cha alongside her partner Sasha Farber. Even though she didn't take home the top score this week, we have a feeling she's going to go very far in the competition. Who knows, maybe she will follow in her teammate Laurie Hernandez's footsteps?
3 Vital Things We Know About the Virus on The Walking Dead
Now finishing up its seventh season, The Walking Dead is no longer about zombies; it's about human dynamics and how far the living will go to survive. The most poignant deaths are those that come at the hand of another live person, whether it be Carol or Negan delivering the final blow. Sill, it's shocking how little time the characters spend talking about how or why the world is now a vast wasteland of walkers. The only times the origin of the virus or the possibility of stopping it have come up is in the first season, when the group makes it to the CDC (fruitless) and when Eugene asserts that if he makes it to Washington DC, he can stop the spread. As we know now, Eugene is full of sh*t, so who knows whether the virus can be stopped. For now, let's review what we DO know about it.
Everyone Has the Virus
Like in most zombie movies, if you get bit by a walker, you're going to die and come back as a walker. However, if you die from any other cause, you're still going to come back as a walker because the virus is already lying dormant in everyone. The time period for reanimation is anywhere between three minutes and eight hours, though sometimes it feels much quicker. The only way to "kill" a walker is by destroying its brain. Once someone's body dies, the virus becomes active in their brain and the only way to shut down their body is to shoot through or crush their brain. The virus itself could be in the water or airborne, it's not clear. However . . .
Fear the Walking Dead May Have Hinted at the Cause
Last year, Reddit user funeralcasual pointed out something very interesting about the first episode of The Walking Dead's spinoff: there's water everywhere. "In the cold open when Nick wakes up, there are three shots where the jug of water on the side of the is dead center frame," he wrote. "Three shots, three different angles . . . The second time is when Nick meets Calvin at the diner. Calvin is drinking water and they make sure to get that glass in the shot quite a few times, at least enough for me to notice and register that he was drinking water."
We'll Probably Never Know the Truth
In a 2012 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, then-showrunner Glen Mazzarra nearly dashed any hopes that we might get to the bottom of this mystery: "Robert [Kirkman] has not been interested in addressing in the comic book, and I'm not interested in addressing in the show," he said. "That being said, if it leads to new story - if there's something that's important that we get out of it - I'll be the first one to write it. But right now the cause of the zombie outbreak seems irrelevant. I always want the show to play like a horror movie every week. If you define what caused the outbreak, that puts us in a world of science fiction, and this isn't science fiction to me, it's horror. In my mind that's two different genres, so that is an important distinction to me."
The Author of Big Little Lies Has 3 More Adaptations on the Horizon
HBO's murderous new drama Big Little Lies has taken over our lives recently. It's based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, and it's one of the most exciting new TV shows of 2017. With so much power behind the adaptation (which concludes on Sunday!), it's logical to wonder if any of Moriarty's other seven novels are being brought to life anytime soon. And, well, we have good news.

Mom Films the "Horrifying" Way TSA Agents Treated Her Boy With Disabilities
We have been through hell this morning. They detained Aaron for well over an hour at DFW. (And deliberately kept us from our flight... we are now on an alternate) We were treated like dogs because I requested they attempt to screen him in other ways per TSA rules. He has SPD and I didn't want my child given a pat down like this. Let me make something else crystal clear. He set off NO alarms. He physically did not alarm at all during screening, he passed through the detector just fine. He is still several hours later saying "I don't know what I did. What did I do?" I am livid. Please, share... make this viral like the other children's videos with TSA... I wish I had taped the entire interchange because it was horrifying. We had two DFW police officers that were called and flanking him on each side. Somehow these power tripping TSA agents who are traumatizing children and doing whatever they feel like without any cause, need to be reined in.
Posted by Jennifer Williamson on Sunday, March 26, 2017
After a mom says that her son with disabilities was detained at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport for "well over an hour," she's speaking out against the TSA agents and the "unnecessary" treatment of her kid.
According to Jennifer Williamson, her son didn't set off metal detectors, but security officials still wanted to perform a pat-down on him. When she explained that her child has sensory processing disorder, which makes being touched by strangers very distressing, they still carried on the "traumatizing" search.
Jennifer recorded the incident and the video has since gone viral on Facebook. The enraged mom wrote that she felt like the TSA purposefully made them miss their flight because she spoke up on behalf of her son. "We were treated like dogs because I requested they attempt to screen him in other ways per TSA rules," she wrote on Facebook. "He has SPD and I didn't want my child given a pat down like this."
According to Jennifer, the exchange carried on well after she stopped filming. "We had two DFW police officers that were called and flanking him on each side," she wrote. "He is still several hours later saying, 'I don't know what I did. What did I do?' I am livid."
According to the TSA, Aaron and his mom were at the checkpoint for about 45 minutes and the pat-down took approximately two minutes. The agency also said in a prepared statement that the additional agents were brought in to ease Jennifer's concerns. "The video shows a male TSA officer explaining the procedure to the passenger, who fully cooperates," the agency said in a statement to Dallas News. "Afterward, the TSA officer was instructed by his supervisor, who was observing, to complete the final step of the screening process."
Mayim Bialik's Clapback to Her Sons' First-World Complaint Is Too Good
Mayim Bialik makes America laugh on the regular as her character on The Big Bang Theory, Amy Farrah Fowler, but as it turns out, the actress and neuroscientist is actually pretty hilarious off-screen too, especially when it comes to her kids. The funny mom took to Facebook with a candid selfie featuring her toilet brush in response to her sons' first-world complaint: that they didn't have Spotify Premium.
"This is the moment my sons chose to complain that I don't have Spotify Premium, but their dad does," Bialik captioned her photo. "Think I gave a good gosh darn?" The mom's clapback to her sons is so perfect, as not only did they choose the most inopportune moment to complain - while their mom was cleaning the toilet - but because it's completely relatable, especially for other divorced parents, to have to deal with a "the grass is always greener" scenario.
Commenters on the post are praising Bialik for her realness, many agreeing that they, too, constantly field complaints from their kids about things their friends' or other parent's houses have. One commenter in particular has us nodding our heads with his thoughts on the matter: "At that moment I would have told him, you want Spotify Premium, I'm going to show you how to operate a toilet brush. Guess who is now the toilet cleaner so he can have Spotify Premium?"
Ah, sweet revenge.
Just Hours Old, 1 Newborn Helped Pull Off the Ultimate Surprise For His Mom
After Susan Medina and Darick Mead welcomed their first child, the new mom had no idea that there was about to be another reason to celebrate.
At just hours old, Darick enlisted his newborn's help in pulling off the ultimate surprise proposal, which left the new mom stunned. The Nebraska couple has been together for two years and Darick always teased Susan that he didn't want to get married for 40 years.
However, this new dad had a much sooner date in mind and worked with hospital staff to make their newborn's birth even more memorable. A month before Ryder's birth, Darick bought an engagement ring and let the hospital in on his idea. Shortly after Susan's C-section, nurses came in to "check on" Ryder but were actually slipping him into a personalized onesie that said, "Mommy, will you marry my Daddy?"
When they brought the baby back over, Darick was waiting by her bedside with a cushion-cut engagement ring. "I didn't expect that at all. I thought I was going to be changing the baby's diaper, looked up, and everyone had their phones out, so I was confused," Susan told POPSUGAR. "But I was super, super happy!"

100 Unusual Boy Names
Are you on the hunt for an unusual baby boy name? We've looked at the United States Social Security Administration's list of the most popular names and rounded up an A-to-Z of 100 rare boy names. Using a ranking system where 1 is the most common name, these unique boy names all have a rank of 901 or greater! But before we reveal the names, here are a few interesting trends we noted among them.
Unusual and Trendy Boy Names
Although they're less commonly used, some of the names on this list still follow recent trends. Agustin and Thaddeus fit into the Roman and Greek trend, while Houston is part of the place-name trend. Biblical names are here as well (Jeremiah and Enoch), as are creative spellings in the form of Brice, Donte, Trystan, and Zackery.
Unusual Celebrity Boy Names
Just as famous figures may drive a name up the charts, they may also keep a name relatively uncommon. Looking at some of the names in the list, not many parents are giving their boys the names Clinton, Nixon, Elvis, Hendrix, Franco, Hugh, Quinten, and Coen, all of which are associated with famous figures in the political and entertainment realms.
Unusual Boy Names Starting With S?
As you look at the A to Z, you'll notice that a few letters are missing. We looked at the names ranked 901 to 1,000 by the Social Security Administration (they don't publish name rankings beyond 1,000), and surprisingly, there wasn't an S name to be found! Other letters that escaped the bunch are U, W, and X.

How to Bring Back Date Night Without the Sitter Struggles
A few years ago, when our oldest child was a serious threenager (i.e. trying to destroy our souls with her constant battles of the wills, stubbornness, and tantrums) and our son was just getting out of the newborn stage, my husband and I realized that the only date nights we'd had in the last year had been weddings, work events, or a quick drink or dinner out while our parents were home with the kids. Moreover, the possibility of scheduling regular date nights - which we knew we needed to stay connected and strong as a couple - seemed as likely as getting through a day without one of our children crying hysterically. In other words, not a chance.
It was a conundrum. We knew that never getting out of the house alone together was wearing on our marriage. On our very irregular dates, we got along as well as we always had - laughing, joking around, complimenting each other, and generally enjoying each other's company. At home, however, we were either in teammate mode, juggling kid and house duties and speaking to each other in clipped sentences, or bickering, both exhausted and overwhelmed by parenting two small children.
We were also so focused on our kids that we often didn't realize that we had an open night or weekend until it was already upon us, which as every parent knows is usually way too late to find a sitter who is both trustworthy and, more importantly, available. We'd try, fail, then get irritated with each other for not thinking of booking a sitter sooner.
Our other big hurdle is the fact that our kids are both impossible to get to bed. While we trusted our parents to get the difficult job done, any 19-year-old sitter was sure to either call us to come home early or let our kids stay up until we got home, and both scenarios are date-night vibe killers. We began to accept our fate of never having a weekend social life again, until one of our sitters made us realize something genius: a date night doesn't have to be at night.
We texted our favorite babysitter on a Thursday, asking if she was free Saturday evening and expecting her usual no, which we got, but with a caveat. She was free all afternoon until about 6 p.m. Did we want her then? It was an aha moment for both of us. We could go out at 2 p.m., have a late lunch or early dinner and a couple of drinks, see a movie, or plan some other activity (winery tour, visit to the arboretum, shopping), then make it home in time to feed the kids the dinner we picked up for them while we were out, do bath and bedtime, then reconnect while wearing our pajamas.
It was the simplest solution, but it made all the difference. Since we discovered how easy date days are to execute - seriously, booking a sitter on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon is about 1,000 times easier than scoring one on a Friday or Saturday night - we've planned them regularly, at least once a month, but this Winter, it was sometimes every weekend. Having the one-on-one time together has made us a stronger couple, which in turn makes us better parents. And that's good for everyone.

Photographer's Stunning "Generations" Project Features Grandparents and Tots
Ivette Ivens is a maternity, breastfeeding, and family photographer who is used to snapping photos of baby bumps, newborns, and young families. However, her new project features a sweet relationship that isn't often highlighted in professional family photography: the relationship between grandparents and their grandkids.
The project, called "Generations," is an ode to her own family and the special bond her children share with their grandparents. "Now that I live in a different continent than my parents do, my family and I get to see them only once year. My parents are older and every time I see them I can't help myself but wonder: Will I be lucky enough to see them again next year?" Ivens shared when asked about the inspiration behind her new project. "I feel so blessed that my children are able to experience the everlasting love and guidance of grandparents. It's so important and life changing, really."
Ivens commented on the meaningful differences she finds in shooting these types of photos as opposed to her typical work:
I've always found beauty in photos that are organic and sincere - when you look at them 10 or 20 years from now, no matter how much you've changed or where life took you, you can relive that moment and feel exactly what you felt years ago at that exact minute. Children and elders are the perfect subject for these type of photos as they don't pay attention to me clicking away with my camera, which allows me to capture those real genuine moments.
