Get Ahead of the Game! 8 Reasons to Be Early to Work

Arriving early to work might not always sound like the most appealing thing to do, mainly because it means getting up earlier. But there are some great reasons to get ahead of the game - especially if you practice some good morning habits. Check out ways that starting work before the rest of the crowd can make your day more efficient and enjoyable.

1. Your commute is easier.

If you drive, there is significantly less traffic early in the morning. If you use public transportation, you may actually be able to find a seat before rush hour begins!

2. Your morning coffee is fresher.

The later you come in to work, the more likely it is that the coffee has been brewed and sitting for awhile. Getting to work early means making coffee (people will love you!) and having the freshest first cup of the day.

3. The refrigerator is all yours.

Office fridges accumulate so much food so quickly that putting your lunch in sometimes feels like playing a game of Tetris. When you arrive early, you get first dibs on a nearly empty fridge, so you don't have to stuff your food in some corner and find it squished and leaky when you go to eat it later.

4. You have time to plan your day out.

Even if you aren't coming in and getting immediately down to work, arriving early means having the luxury of taking your time and making a plan for the day. When you have a solid to-do list, you work more efficiently.

5. There are limited distractions.

If you have a hard time getting work done from home, coming to work when the office is empty is a great way to buckle down, focus, and get a good chunk of work completed without anything to distract you.

6. You can score face time with the boss.

Most likely, your boss is one of the first people to arrive in the morning. If you're already there, or if you arrive around the same time as they do, you're able to have more one-on-one interactions with your employer than you may be able to when a larger group is involved. Who knows where getting in good with the boss can lead!

7. You get the inside information.

As people trickle in, you're able to speak to everyone and cover all of your bases. Whether it's just a quick hello or more in-depth conversation, you get to take part in it all.

8. You're able to leave earlier.

One of the biggest perks of arriving early is that you will probably finish your tasks sooner and be able to head out before you would be able to otherwise. This means you can get that workout in before your dinner plans or drop off your dry cleaning before the store closes.

This Modern Parenting Necessity Could Be Hurting Your Child's Speech

As modern technology has evolved to address the needs and desires of adults, it's also affected the way - or how often - children use technology. Although so-called screen time has been a blessing for many parents, a new study is outlining some alarming repercussions.

In a study that was presented at the 2017 Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting on May 4, researchers led by Dr. Catherine Birken found a link between screen time and speech delays in children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years. The study has yet to be published for public viewing, however, the findings presented at the meeting have been widely reported.

According to CNN, the study had the parents of 900 different children record the amount of time their children spent using tablets, smartphones, or other gaming devices. Researchers then examined the children's speech using different language tests.

Of the 900 participants, 20 percent spent 28 minutes a day looking at a screen by the time they were 18 months old. The bad news? With every 30-minute increase in daily screen time, researchers noted a nearly 50 percent increased risk of speech delay - meaning a difficulty with producing speech sounds, as opposed to gestures.

That being said, this is the first study of its kind, and more research will also need to be done on whether different types of content could have varied effects on children. In an interview with CNN, Dr. Birken explained, "It's the first time that we've sort of shone a light on this potential issue, but I think the results need to be tempered [because] it's really a first look."

For now, Dr. Birken is advising parents to avoid screen time for any children younger than 18 months old.

Bombay Sapphire Gin Is Being Recalled For Having Double the Alcohol Content

Bombay Sapphire gin bottles are being recalled in Canada, and the reason has many people running to liquor stores to stock up! The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (also known as the Party Police) discovered that some bottles of Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin contained almost double the alcohol content that is listed on the bottle. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the batch of bottles affected were bottled before being diluted to the proper 40 percent alcohol content by volume and, instead, came out with 77 percent.

The bottles have a product code of "L16304" and have since been removed from stores. Bacardi, the distributor of Bombay gin products, has asked customers with these bottles to return them as soon as possible.

If you picked up a 1.14-liter bottle of Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin recently, you should definitely check the label, but we'll let you decide what to do next.

Vanessa Hudgens Is Already Wearing the Swimsuit Color of the Summer

As a self-described individualist and sartorial free spirit, Vanessa Hudgens doesn't blindly follow trends. With her latest beach shot, Vanessa reaffirmed her style knowledge, opting for a gathered one-piece in copper - the burnt orange shade that's gradually come to replace rose gold following its ubiquity. What's more, the texture also has an unmissable eye-catching sheen.

Vanessa's one-piece features a plunging neckline, side cutouts, and flattering ruching at the waist. She captioned her confident shot with, "I call it Malibooya." Ahead, shop similar copper selections before the swimwear trend really takes off.

Former Congressman Who Can't Pay Child Support Bashes Jimmy Kimmel's Healthcare Plea

In a sobering monologue for his show, Jimmy Kimmel gave a heartbreaking plea to President Donald Trump on healthcare cuts. The late-night host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! told the world how his newborn son, Billy, recently underwent heart surgery - and his condition, congenital heart disease, qualifies as a preexisting condition. Most people, like former President Barack Obama, were quick to applaud Kimmel for his statements. One former congressman instead took the opportunity to send a rage-inducing tweet directed at Kimmel.

Former representative of Illinois's eighth district Joe Walsh is no stranger to making absurd comments on the internet. However, his latest tweet directed at Kimmel is downright cruel, insensitive, and hypocritical.

Walsh has previously come under fire for claiming to be unable to make child-support payments to his ex-wife and three children in 2011. The congressman claimed he couldn't pay because he "had no money," according to ThinkProgress. Even more maddening, Walsh also rejected health care from the government in 2011 as a way to protest Obamacare, even though his wife has a preexisting condition. The internet was quick to condemn Walsh's comments, with some, like actress Alyssa Milano, calling him out on his child support payments.

Kimmel, on the other hand, has thanked everyone for their well wishes and is asking people to donate to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.

Halle Berry's Met Gala Hairstyle Looks Like a Standard Updo - Until You See It From the Back

Many stars attempt to look like royalty at the Met Gala, but in our minds, this year's red carpet queen was Halle Berry. You may not have noticed, but the actress was wearing an actual crown!

Celebrity stylist Castillo flawlessly balanced elegance and opulence with a rolled ponytail bun. His inspiration came from the star's Versace gown. "At first, I wanted to do something pretty and down the back, but then realized I wanted to keep the look all about the dress," he told POPSUGAR via email. "I didn't want to take away from the elements that made this dress amazing, so I decided to pull the hair back and do an elegant low bun with a crown at the top."

After creating a center part on hair prepped with MarulaOil Rare Oil Style Extending Primer ($16), Castillo created loose and natural waves on Halle using a mix of Neuro hot tools, including two unclipped curling irons and the Smooth Iron ($135). He then brushed hair into a low pony, backcombed it for volume, and rolled and pinned it up into a bun, topping it with a crown.

If you plan on DIYing this for your next major event, know that great texture is the key to the look. "That's really going to lend itself to create a shape that doesn't sit flat and add volume to the bun or chignon you're creating," explained Castillo. Read on to see the stunning style from all angles.

Prada's Resort Collection Is Made of Lingerie and Sport Socks

The Prada Resort 2018 collection, called "Osservatorio," was revealed in Milan. It's the first Cruise lineup designer Miuccia Prada's ever offered us from the fashion house, and it certainly did not disappoint. Delicate silk dresses were fastened with thick black belts at the midriff or otherwise decorated in sequins, balanced at the bottom by knee-high sport socks and a new slingback Prada sneaker that's bound to impress so many street style stars (perhaps like Susie Lau, who sat front row).

The spindly straps of book-sized clutches wrapped around the models' arms in the accessory department, but Prada's signature '50s-inspired fur sleeves were a funky enough touch on their own. Scroll for a glimpse at a new meeting of the feminine and the athletic below.

The MTV Movie Awards Hosts You Probably, Definitely Forgot About

The MTV Movie Awards will combine with TV for the first time this year, and we're excited to see how the show rolls out with host Adam Devine on May 7. The Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates and Workaholics star will join a long list of past emcees that includes Eddie Murphy, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Jessica Alba.

While some hosts have been pretty unforgettable (remember how many digs Russell Brand took at the stars in the audience?), there are others we completely forgot about. For instance, we had no idea that Will Smith hosted the show back in 1994, and we may have blocked out that time MTV paired Jimmy Fallon with Kirsten Dunst for 2001's big event. Some high-profile stars have even hosted more than once! Keep reading to see all the MTV Movie Awards hosts you may have forgotten about, then check out the most '90s-tastic moments and sexiest smooches from the show's best kiss award winners.

I Got a Taste of an All-Female Play Party and It Was Everything I Imagined, in the Best Way

The guarded side entrance to a lounge I've been to a few times prior opened to its more intimate section that I had never appreciated before. Instead of blaring house music and a swarm of bodies, the space was only filled with a dozen gorgeous women dressed to the evening's theme: night temptress. My editor and I were greeted with a smiling welcome and a glass of sparkling wine, and we spoke with the founder of Skirt Club, Geneviève LeJeune. Sitting at the end of the bar in a black lace bodysuit and fitted black pants, Geneviève began to tell us why she started this females-only play party (which also doubles as a professional networking club).

Before launching Skirt Club in 2014 in London, Geneviève felt certain pressures as a bisexual woman. Her boyfriend at the time expected her to be comfortable with frequent threesomes and sex clubs where women are viewed more like prey and playthings than equal participants. Skirt Club was then born as a safe place built on trust, community, and empowerment - and free of inhibitions.

"Women should be in charge of their own sexual desires."
"Female sexuality is fluid - society is turning a page in modern-girl thinking of what 'sexual attraction' can mean. Skirt Club encourages that freedom of expression," she said.

Skirt Club is grounded in modern feminism and the promotion of confidence. No men are allowed. In the last year, Geneviève has chosen to only interview with female journalists because some male writers reduced Skirt Club down to a sensationalized orgy, stripping away the very empowering ideals it was founded on. "Men write stories about sex, and women about female empowerment, sexual awakening, and intellectual stimulation," she said. "In other words - real content."

Skirt Club appeals primarily, but not exclusively, to bisexual and "bicurious" women who want to explore their sexuality, sometimes for the very first time. But many members are actually in heterosexual relationships and come to these gatherings for various reasons, like wanting to reawaken their sex lives, or just because they are seeking a safe and fun time. "It most certainly gives them a sense of liberation and total control of their sexual desires," Geneviève said. "Plus, it's new territory and forces them to break out of their shell. Learning to flirt with a woman is a whole new skill set that can set your heart and nerves on fire."

To become a club member, all applicants must complete an online form, as well as upload a photo of themselves. The only restrictions are age (21 to 49) and, well, men. According to Geneviève, the process is selective but fair and largely dependent on whether she is career-minded. Skirt Club's motto is, "Confidence in the bedroom leads to confidence in the boardroom," after all. Though membership is completely free, admission to its parties (about four to five a year in each city) are a hefty price of $150-plus, which covers the cost of renting out the venue (usually a luxe penthouse or loft), unlimited drinks, and other fees.

Its impressive roster of 5,000 global members - over half of whom reside in London - are spread throughout New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Sydney, and Berlin. We were only attending the launch party in San Francisco, where membership is already at 400. And because we were attending what they call a "Mini Skirt" party, or a teaser, I was only able to get a taste of what can be expected at an actual gathering, since no sex was allowed at the teaser party. But to give you an idea of what goes down, the official party fliers are signed off saying, "Away from the prying eyes of men, Skirt Club parties are designed to facilitate one night of consensual experimentation - no consequences, no questions, no expectations."

As more beautiful women filled out the space, my editor and I mingled with some other members. The one thing we noticed instantly was the diverse range of attendees.

Among us were fellow journalists, club performers, techies, and women of different sexualities, races, and body types.
It was by far the hottest melting pot I had ever been a part of. There was absolutely no cattiness, and each person would return your smile. Everyone looked so at ease, speaking as though they had already known each other, even though it was the inaugural party in our city. And for the first time in a club, I was unafraid to leave my purse and my drink unattended.

One woman we chatted with gave us some pro tips based on her experience at the Skirt Club events in New York. She recommended that we sit across from, instead of next to, our crushes for a better chance of landing on them in spin the bottle, which we later played. And she warned us that if we took a tequila body shot, the rule is that you have to get up on the bar next. Good to know.

After a quick scan, there were about 60 women around us by the time our entertainment for the evening was to kick us off. A scantily clad burlesque dancer performed for us in the main room, and this was the one exception when catcalling was fully encouraged. Geneviève followed the performance with a brief talk about Skirt Club, and after introducing the sex educator who was about to speak, she told us all to "explore on your terms."

Allison Moon, educator and author of Girl Sex 101, dove into an informative lesson featuring hair-pulling and spanking demonstrations and an intro to "p*ssy hugs," or rubbing your pelvic floor muscles, taught with a plush vulva. Like this evening, full Skirt Club parties always include entertainment and a guest speaker. A couple of Geneviève's favorites include a dominatrix who "persuaded 60 women to start spanking each other in a professional manner. The emphasis was on accuracy - well, at first . . . " and a tantra speaker who taught the seven types of orgasm, which "forced women to focus on themselves for once."

After some sex ed, we were all given dare cards to break the ice. Mine instructed me to brush the thigh of the girl next to me. And then we went back to our middle school roots for an innocent game of spin the bottle, where things really started taking off. Each of the three sections of the lounge were occupied by circles of now-well-acquainted friends. As the evening progressed, so did the intimacy.

There was discussion of careers as much as there was group spanking and making out on the dance floor.
Guests started to couple off, but I was still only witnessing the tamest of debauchery.

The premise of community and support in your journey of exploration is not at all a facade. The women were playful but respectful. Encouraging but never pressuring. When asked about a particularly memorable part of an event, Geneviève recalled a party in Miami.

"I have always been most touched by the story of a member who'd had a mastectomy and didn't want to take her bikini top off in the pool," she shared. "All the other ladies were splashing around frivolously, but this one was shy. When she explained her reasons, we convinced her to unleash, and each of us took turns to kiss her breasts better. I guess you could call it a healing ritual, but we gave her a lot of love, and the shyness was long forgotten."

If this was just a preview of what's to come, I'm looking forward to discovering what Skirt Club is all about.

Some People Just Didn't Follow the Met Gala Theme - and We Have Feelings About It

Imagine showing up to a Halloween party in a Black Swan costume you meticulously crafted from a vintage black feathered tulle skirt, winged eyeliner you finally mastered (only after spending the better part of your evenings hunched over your bathroom mirror watching YouTube tutorials), and pointe shoes you can hardly walk in (but they make the look), and your friend walks in in a black American Apparel leotard and calls herself a ballerina. That's bullsh*t, and we're betting that's how Rihanna felt glancing around the Met Gala last night.

She was the black swan queen of the Costume Institute Gala, paying homage to the avant-garde Rei Kawakubo theme in a true Comme des Garcons masterpiece, even while others dressed down or maybe even completely ignored the gala theme altogether in minimalist looks from the likes of Calvin Klein (Gwyneth, we're looking at you). No, there's nothing actually wrong with the pretty looks - most of them would land these stars on the best dressed list of any other event - but please, not to the Met Gala. It makes me think of that moment in the Sex and the City movie, you know, when Carrie wears a bird in her hair and Big can't even show up to the altar. She put a bird on her head and wore it with a Vivienne Westwood gown - and he didn't even get out of the car. It's exactly like that (minus the whole jilted bride thing).

Rihanna boldly embraces the theme in something sculptural - and no doubt, hard to sit in - and Elle Fanning waltzes down the carpet in a soft strapless Miu Miu gown. Nope, not today, Elle. Of all the times to play it safe, it's certainly not when you're a celebrity who actually gets invited to participate in one of the most exciting red carpets of the year. If the dress code said black tie, would you show up in jeans?

Still, it happens every year. Despite the theme, which is obviously open to much interpretation, there are a majority of stars who just don't take their style cues from the invite, or, frankly, barely look like they're trying. I get the risk involved in putting on feathers or wearing a mask, or doing any number of things outside your comfort zone (and Comme des Garcons fashion can certainly take people outside their comfort zones), but come on - Helen Lasichanh didn't even have access to her arms. (Could she even eat? Or go to the bathroom?) That's commitment, people. Sure, the outrageous isn't the "prettiest" or the "sexiest" of the night, and there's certainly the threat of the "worst dressed list" to consider, but isn't being memorable something, too? And even more so, when did we stop having fun with fashion - especially when the event practically begs us to? At the very least, what about just showing up and putting it all out there with winged liner, a veiled headpiece, a tufted train, and a knowing smile that says, "I nailed it."

15 Times Harry Styles Shattered Men's Fashion Norms in Gucci

Since launching his solo career this year, Harry Styles has been a walking billboard for Gucci in each of his performances and TV appearances. When Harry wears Gucci, though, he doesn't go with a sleek, tailored black suit that is so commonly expected of men. No, Harry opts for the splashy, loud prints that Alessandro Michele is sending down his runways as creative director of the fashion house. But for anyone who wasn't paying attention to Harry while he was in his One Direction days (shame on you, but welcome to the party), this style isn't new for him.

A couple years ago, Harry started to boldly follow in the footsteps of fashionable men who came before him, like Jared Leto or even David Bowie, whom Harry has been compared to countless times, especially as of late. These are men who paved the way years ago for androgynous fashion that's been steadily on the rise and is now blowing up, thanks in large part to what Gucci is currently doing.

With the help of his stylist, Harry Lambert, Harry is setting the tone for this new piece of his life while outfitted almost exclusively in Gucci. Nearly gone are his sleek Burberry shirts and rocker-esque Saint Laurent jackets (he may never give up his Hawaiian-print Saint Laurent shirts, though), and in their places are Gucci's flashy florals and bright colors that would be at home on a man or a woman. These style moves come as no surprise when Harry is the type of man who carries a pink iPhone and chose to design his entire solo album look in a very trendy millennial pink shade.

And though androgyny and flamboyant fashion certainly aren't new, it's refreshing to see more and more high-profile men taking risks and promoting happiness and acceptance, no matter what.

Harry's not afraid to take risks, not only in his new music (hello, an over-5-minute Britpop masterpiece as a debut single?), but also with his revamped image. Sure, he was rocking eye-catching patterns while still in One Direction, but now that his career and life are more or less his own and he doesn't have to conform to what society views a boy band as or even a manly man as, he appears to be doing and wearing what makes him happy and comfortable. It might be custom-embroidered Gucci pants or a delicate lace turtleneck - or even a women's suit for a photo shoot - but nearly all of it is fashion-forward, covered in bold prints or colors, and firmly in ungendered territory. And though androgyny and flamboyant fashion certainly aren't new, it's refreshing to see more and more high-profile men taking risks and promoting happiness and acceptance, no matter what.

To see just what I mean about Harry's new love affair with Gucci, scroll through for 15 times he and the brand were a match made in print-loving heaven. And though this list is by no means exhaustive - Harry has worn a lot of Gucci - it provides a good introduction to what Harry is doing with this new path in his life and career. Frankly, I can't wait to see what he wears next.

Meghan Markle Looks Royally Smitten While Watching Prince Harry Play Polo

Meghan Markle basically turned into the heart eyes emoji on Saturday, and it's all thanks to Prince Harry. The Suits actress and activist traveled to the Cowarth Polo Club in Ascot, England, over the weekend to watch her boyfriend of over six months compete in the Audi Polo Challenge, where she couldn't help but flash a huge smile. It marks the first time that Harry (who looked equally smitten, by the way) and Meghan attended a public event together.

The polo match raised money for Harry's charities, Sentebale and WellChild, and boasted A-list guests like Harry's former classmate Eddie Redmayne, Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell, and The Crown actor Matt Smith (who coincidentally plays Harry's grandfather Prince Philip in the Netflix drama). While Meghan cheered Harry on from the stands, she bonded with Mark Dyer, a former Welsh Guards officer and close friend of Harry's who helped set up his Sentebale charity.

Meghan and Harry have been jetting all over the world to be with one another over the last few months, including trips to Canada (where Meghan films Suits) and to Jamaica to celebrate a friend's wedding. The pair will be wedding dates once again in just a few weeks, when they they attend Pippa Middleton's high-profile nuptials. Kate Middleton's sister reportedly has a "no ring, no bring" policy for her ceremony, so Meghan will join Harry at the reception later on that night.

Michael Phelps Celebrates Boomer's 1st Birthday With a Shark-Themed Bash

Boomer Phelps celebrated his first birthday on Friday. In honor of the big milestone, Michael and Nicole Phelps threw their little guy an aquatic themed bash titled, "Boomer's First Shark Attack." Aside from sharing numerous photos of the 1-year-old opening his presents, the Olympic swimmer also posted an adorable photo of the family of three with his shark cake.

It seems like just yesterday that Boomer stole our hearts at the Rio Olympics. Since then, he has been raking up even more precious moments on Instagram. Whether he's learning how to swim with his dad or just posing for the camera, we can't get enough of that sweet face.

The Justice Department Is Prosecuting an Activist For Laughing at Jeff Sessions

Forewarning to would-be activists venturing to protest Attorney General Jeff Sessions: laughing could be used against you in court. Desiree A. Fairooz, a member of the social justice NGO Code Pink, was convicted of two charges on May 3 stemming from an incident during Jeff Sessions's Senate confirmation hearing.

Fairooz, 61, was charged with disorderly conduct and demonstrating on Capitol grounds; according to the New York Times, she was found guilty of both counts by a Virginia jury on Wednesday morning. Facing up to 12 months in prison, Fairooz's lawyer, Samuel Bogash, said discussion of an appeal was premature but that he would seek post-trial motions to aside the verdict.

The Justice Department also brought charges against two other Code Pink activists who were present at Sessions's hearing. Tighe Barry and Lenny Bianchi were dressed as Ku Klux Klan members, an allusion to Sessions's history of racial discrimination accusations, and charged with disorderly conduct as well as demonstrating. Barry and Bianchi were acquitted on the disorderly conduct charge but convicted of demonstrating on Capitol grounds.

Fairooz, who was dressed as a pink Lady Liberty, shared her description of the Jan. 10 hearing and ensuing arrest to reporters on Wednesday. Explaining her outburst, Fairooz said the laugh occurred right after Alabama Senator Richard Shelby asserted that Sessions had a long history of treating all Americans equally.

"I just couldn't hold it. It was spontaneous," Fairooz said. "It was an immediate rejection of what I considered an outright lie or pure ignorance."

Following the giggle, Fairooz was taken into custody despite not intending to disrupt the hearing. "None of us planned to get arrested," Fairooz added. "We just wanted to be a visible symbol of dissent."

Extend Your Keurig's Lifetime by Cleaning It Properly With These Tips

If your last cup of coffee tasted a little off or your Keurig machine has been experiencing problems, it's probably in desperate need of a deep clean. But if you tossed or lost the manual, we've got you covered. Look to the following tips to extend the life of your brewer.

How Often Does It Have to Be Cleaned?

To get the most out of your brewer and to get the best possible cup, you should be descaling it every three to six months. Nespresso advises you to run its machine with water after each use to prevent coffee grounds from building up, which is also suggested for Keurig machines.

How to Descale Your Machine

For any type of coffee machine, it's best to use purified or filtered water to prevent any mineral buildup in the system. Both Keurig and Nespresso sell descaling solution and kits to help remove the calcium deposits left by water.

Other Preventative Care

Be sure to rinse your brewer's water reservoir and change the water sitting in it regularly. Swapping out your Keurig's water filter every two months will also improve coffee quality.

David Beckham's "Dinner of Choice" Will Have You Screaming "What the Eff?"

Image Source: Getty / David M. Benett

We never thought we'd see the day where we were actually questioning David Beckham's level of sexiness, but his most recent choice of dinner has us a little perplexed, to say the least. On May 2, Beckham celebrated his 42nd birthday alongside his adorable family, but it's not his Benjamin Button aging tactics that are raising eyebrows; it's his "dinner of choice" and the bizarre combination of foods.

Beckham shared a photo of his plate on Instagram, pictured below.

We totally get it: it's his birthday and he can eat whatever he wants, but the visual of all the foods mashed up on the plate together has us feeling things about DB we never thought were possible. Let's break it down. According to Business Insider, Beckham's plate is filled with gammon (ham), a fried egg, coleslaw, two pineapple rings, mushy peas, baked beans, and potato wedges - quite the interesting combination.

When we think of Beckham's washboard abs and perfectly toned athletic physique, we assumed he preferred a protein-heavy meal or a huge rack of ribs for his birthday cheat dinner, so this array of mushy peas and pineapple rings definitely took us by surprise. Whatever floats your boat, Becks (and he definitely redeemed himself with this delicious-looking dessert below)!

I'm French - and Everything My Country Stands For Is at Stake in Our Election

Liberty, equality, fraternity. Those are the values France was built on. But today, those values I cherish - those values my ancestors fought so hard for - are being trampled. They seem to have been reduced to meaningless yet powerful words that politicians have taken hostage in a bid to have us believe that they care for our freedom and our rights. And I have never felt so disheartened.

Today, we find ourselves in an undeniably strange and stressful situation. For the first time in decades, two outsiders have gone through the first round of elections, ousting the two political parties that have been governing for what seems like forever. One, neither from the right nor the left, is young, and some would argue inexperienced. Emmanuel Macron has graced numerous tabloid covers with his wife, was part of a government that failed to keep most of its promises, and is the brain behind one of the most contested laws passed in the past five years. We don't know much about him or his policies, and his past as a banker isn't reassuring.

The other is from the far right. Marine Le Pen has been in the political sphere for as long as I can remember and took her father's place as National Front leader in the stated goal of un-demonizing a party that is known for its negationist views. Everybody knows what she stands for, although she very cleverly has managed to blur some lines. "She isn't the monster everybody thinks she is," someone recently told me. "She's not a racist. She just wants us to be safe." But see, closing down the frontiers, evicting illegal immigrants, and imposing a ban on Muslim headscarves is racism, because trust me when I say that the borders will not be closed to my white, Catholic friends who live in other parts of the world. And no, it will not prevent terrorism. What it will do, however, is reinforce this feeling of hatred, threat, and fear that we already have toward the "other" when we should be helping those who are in need.

Although none of the choices we are being given are ideal, the answer lies in this one simple question: would you rather vote for someone who plays on the fears of a nation, is against LGBTQ rights, abortion, and Europe itself, who is a threat to the freedom of the press, and who will not fight for women's rights? Or for someone else?

If anything, these elections have shown me that my country is more divided than ever. The population doesn't trust its representatives and doesn't believe in what they have to offer. Politicians seem completely disconnected from our reality, at war with each other and using us only to gain personal power. The country of love and culture that the whole world used to look at with envy is slowly but surely turning into a country of hatred, violence, and corruption, and some of us - whether we are conscious of it or not - are pushing in that direction. Only a handful of people seem to be concerned by the fact that our democracy is at risk, and that is a problem.

Now, I am by no means a political expert, but I know that the extreme right isn't the answer. France is a free country, and I wish we wouldn't forget about all the sacrifices it took our people to get to where we are now. It is still in our power to prevent history from repeating itself. It is still in our power to make sure future generations will live in a world where love isn't a crime, where the press isn't suppressed, and where our own beliefs are not used as a weapon against us. It is time for us to make the right choice. It is time for us to make our voices heard, even if it is by voting for someone who doesn't represent our values. Refusing to go to the polling station isn't an option when we are so close to destroying everything our country stands for. Anything but the extreme right.
