Are You Doing It Right? 5 Ways to Tell If You’re Succeeding at Your New Job
Starting a new job is usually an exciting time with the anticipation that your new gig will be a perfect match, and will allow you to cultivate and sharpen your skills while making a positive contribution to the company. At the same time, it can be very stressful, especially within the first three months when you are literally on trial and don't know if you will make it to the other side of your probationary period. With different management styles, it is a challenge for people to figure out whether they are doing a good job or not. The following are five ways to tell if you are doing well at your new job:
1. You Have Greater Ownership Over Your Work
Obviously, you were hired to do a specific job, and if someone else has to do it for you, why do they need you? Truth be told, when you are just starting out, there will be a lot of hand-holding as you get acclimated to your new role. Your direct supervisor is going to offer you a lot of guidance to make sure that you are on the right track. But as you get better at your role and your team starts to trust you, they will more often give you the ball to run with. This is a great sign and shows that you are doing well at your new job. The sooner the hand-holding stops, the better you are doing. The hope is that the hand-holding stops closer to your first month than to your third month, because if it takes 90 days for your team to trust you, then Houston, we have a problem.
2. You Are Being Given More Responsibility
Another sign that you're doing great at your new job is when you are given responsibility beyond your current role. It's one thing to get your management team to trust you with your role, but once they start trusting you with projects that are beyond the scope of what you were hired for, you know that you are doing pretty awesome. Some may look at this as unfavorable; however, a little more work won't hurt anyone, and if it is a place where you are looking for longevity, the more areas that you make yourself valuable, the better.
3. Your Colleagues Rely on Your Opinion/Expertise
They say opinions are like Facebook pages because everyone has them. But in the workplace, valued opinions are few and far between. When you start being the go-to person for your opinion and expertise, this is a good indication that you are doing spectacular at your job. It's one thing to be trusted with your own duties or given extra responsibility, but when that graduates to people trusting you with what they are responsible for, then you are closer to becoming a permanent team member. Establishing yourself as a trusted resource doesn't come easy, especially when you are new. So if it starts to happen, be sure to take it as sign that you are doing things right.
4. You're Asked to Represent Your Company
First you are being trusted with your own work, then you are given extra responsibility, and after that people trust your expertise and opinion. But when your company starts to ask you to represent them in public, it's clear that you are well on your way to becoming a permanent team member. This is a big deal, because when you first start out, the mistakes that you make internally stay within the company, so most new employees are never given the opportunity to go out and publicly represent their employers. But when you are sent on speaking engagements to talk on behalf of your employer, if you are asked to head up a meeting with external partners, or when press opportunities arise that you're asked to fulfill, you are given the leeway to relay the company's message to the masses. This is the holy grail of trust and comfort with your higher-ups.
5. Your Boss Is Starting to Lean on You More
"Can you handle this for me?" are the six most important words you can hear from your boss as an employee, let alone a new employee. What the boss is responsible for is not only important for the company but also for their reputation. When you are being trusted to handle things on behalf of the boss, you know that you are there to stay. Being the first that he/she turns to, being mentioned as the alternative contact in out-of-office messages, and/or being told "You got this, I trust you" is the ultimate grand prize of awesomeness at the workplace! You are officially an asset!

How 1 City Is Coming Together After the Nation's Only Anne Frank Memorial Was Defaced
Statistics show that incidents of hate crimes rose sharply across the United States in 2016, coinciding with a presidential campaign in which different races and religions were often pinpointed as sources of America's issues. But expressions of hate often spark a more ardent motivation to quell intolerant ideology. Such is the case at the Wassmuth Center For Human Rights in Boise, ID, where the city's Anne Frank Memorial was just defaced with offensive anti-Semitic graffiti.
On May 9, a custodian discovered hateful tags scrawled on the memorial and alerted the foundation's docent, who was scheduled to tour students that day. As the only Anne Frank Memorial in the United States - and one of the only monuments worldwide to fully display the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - the monument is a vital symbol of humanity, even when it seems lost.
POPSUGAR spoke with Dr. Dan Prinzing, the organization's executive director, about the incident. He says it serves as a reminder to continue fighting against bigotry and prejudice through education. The center has not released (nor does it plan on releasing) what the defacement said, because that's not really the point: what matters is how the community responds to this injustice.
"Our programming has always been about how do we recognize the spiral of injustice," Prinzing said. "Often that spiral begins with language, when words are used as weapons, when we begin to target and marginalize others in the community."
He says the community response has been "overwhelming," and that at least two state lawmakers were swift in their calls to the Wassmuth Center after the incident was reported. It's also worth noting that this incident was the first time hateful words or symbols had been directed at the memorial since it was first dedicated in 2002. "This is not us," Prinzing added. "Us is how we respond to this and that's what frames us as a community."
And the community has responded with more than just phone calls of support: Prinzing said at least two funding campaigns have been set up to cover the $20,000 required to replace marble, which cannot be repaired without damaging the memorial's engravings.
"Someone may have tried to deface [the memorial]," Prinzing said, "but they cannot destroy the meaning."
Texas Lawmakers Just Approved a Bill That Legalizes Adoption Discrimination
Texas GOP lawmakers are leading a crusade to enact some of the harshest immigration and religious laws in the country. Following the passage of a pernicious "show me your papers" bill aimed at immigrants, Republican state congressmen are attempting to pass another discriminatory bill that targets Texas's LGBTQ community. House Bill 3859 would allow adoption agencies to reject potential parents based on their sexual orientation. Despite sharp criticism from House Democratic lawmakers, HB3859 passed through the House on May 9 and will head to the Senate for a vote.
Called the "Freedom to Serve Children Act," HB3859 would extend "religious liberty" to the Texas child welfare system, meaning state care workers would be afforded the freedom to refuse services if they infringe upon their religious beliefs. If the provider is able to prove "sincerely held religious beliefs," the proposed bill would legally protect agents of the state from discrimination claims.
While the proposed legislation protects faith-based organizations' right to refuse service, it also mandates an alternative if service is refused. House Representative James Frank, author of HB3859, told CNN that the bill simply seeks to preserve religious institutions' freedom. "[HB3859] specifically requires the state to ensure that alternate providers are available to offer any services that a faith-based provider declines to provide due to religious conflicts," Frank said in a statement.
Critics have lined up to denounce the bill. In a statement, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas described HB3859 as "opening the door to widespread discrimination and disregard of laws that should be equally applicable to all Texans." The legal and policy director of the ACLU, Rebecca Robertson, also echoed this statement.
"All of us can agree that when religious beliefs can be accommodated without imposing on the rights of others, our laws should protect people of faith from government intrusion," Robertson said. Democratic lawmakers are equally as perturbed by the law's passage through the House and its potential to harm children purely because an adult rejects another adult's beliefs.
"We're further casting these children off. We're making it more difficult for them to be adopted," Democratic House Representative Jessica Farrar said.

Why I Gladly Spent $800 on the Most Perfect Hair Extensions
Something magical happened to me the month before my wedding, and it wasn't just the idea that I was going to marry my soul mate. I discovered hair extensions, and for better or worse, they changed my life forever. (Apologies if that sounds melodramatic, but it's true!)
To put it bluntly, hair extensions are the nose job my mane always needed. I was born with fine, flat locks that return to their natural state the second I leave Drybar. Until that glorious day at Bumble and Bumble, one month before my wedding, when a talented stylist painstakingly bonded Great Lengths extensions into my hair. Great Lengths extensions are made from gorgeous, human hair, and they are fused to small sections of one's real hair with pure keratin.
The process takes about three hours and costs around $1,200. At the time, I thought it was worth every penny. I left the salon with the hair I always wanted and never thought I could have. It was long, lustrous, and it held blowouts for multiple days. It was perfect. And as a lifestyle blogger and stylist, I quickly realized flawless hair was the one accessory I never knew I needed. Something about my new, cascading waves made everything brighter: my outfits looked better, I was more photogenic, and my extra hair seemed to give me extra confidence, too.
But unfortunately, some love stories must come to an end. (And luckily, in this case I'm not referring to my marriage!) In my opinion, Great Lengths has one major flaw: it can fall out. And it can fall out at inopportune times. Like that time I was meeting a co-worker at the Plaza Food Hall for lunch, and I had to discretely tuck a long strand of hair into my purse. How does that happen? Well, since everyone's hair naturally sheds, sometimes the extensions come along for the ride.
Taking out hair extensions is also time-consuming. A removal gel is applied to each of the bonds and rubbed into your hair until the bond breaks down and slides off. This process could take over an hour if you have a full head of extensions. But I was willing to look past these flaws until I decided to get pregnant and go au natural. (And by au natural, I mean I went to Ricky's, bought some clip-ins, and had a stylist cut and color them to match my hair to get me through nine salon-free months.)
I used the clip-ins throughout my pregnancy and for three more months after my beautiful baby girl was born. But I missed the ease of waking up with a full head of perfect hair that I could refresh with a quick spritz of dry shampoo. So back to Bumble I went, and my stylist, Carrie Hill, introduced me to a new tape extension that the salon launched last Fall. To be honest, I had my doubts about sticking tape onto my hair. But after several applications and removals, I'm officially hooked. Keep reading to learn more about this salon process and discover if it's right for you!

13 Sweet, Heartbreaking Things William and Harry Have Said About Princess Diana
Princess Diana and Harry with William on his first day at Eton in September 1995.
It's been nearly 20 years since Princess Diana's tragic death, and the anniversary has brought a renewed interest in her extraordinary (and sometimes scandalous) life as a royal. When Diana passed away in a car accident in August 1997, she left behind her two sons, William and Harry, who were 15 and 12, respectively, at the time. The princes have begun opening up about their mother's death in recent years and have admitted that it took time for them to feel comfortable talking about the huge loss. William told a young boy at a charity event that he was "very angry" about Diana's death and "found it very difficult to talk about."
In addition to speaking about their mother in interviews, William and Harry have taken on a number of her charities and both consider her legacy as one of the driving forces behind their philanthropic efforts. Recently, William bonded with young children who have lost their own parents, telling a little girl, "I lost my mummy when I was young, too. It's very important to talk about it." He and Harry are also erecting a memorial statue in the public gardens of Kensington Palace this year to commemorate her death and her positive impact in the UK and around the world. See more of the sweet, heartbreaking things that Harry and William have said about their late mum.
William and Harry at their mother's funeral in September 1997.
Prince William
- "Time makes it easier. I still miss my mother every day - and it's 20 years after she died."
- "Twenty-one years ago, my mother attended the launch of the Child Bereavement charity. Fifteen years later, I was honored to be invited to become patron of Child Bereavement UK to continue my mother's commitment to a charity which is very dear to me. What my mother recognized back then, and what I understand now, is that grief is the most painful experience that any child or parent can endure."
- "I never realized quite how much of an impact she had. I applaud her for all her dedication and drive, and I think the infectious enthusiasm and all the energy she had really rubbed off on me for causes such as [AIDS research in Africa]."
- "Initially, there is a sense of profound shock and disbelief that this could ever happen to you. Real grief often does not hit home until much later. For many it is a grief never entirely lost. Life is altered as you know it, and not a day goes past without you thinking about the one you have lost. I know that over time it is possible to learn to live with what has happened and, with the passing of years, to retain or rediscover cherished memories."
- "Losing a close family member is one of the hardest experiences that anyone can ever endure. Never being able to say the word 'Mummy' again in your life sounds like a small thing. I too have felt - and still feel - the emptiness on such a day as Mother's Day."
Prince Harry
- "I never really dealt with what had actually happened. So there was a lot of buried emotion, and I still didn't even want to think about it."
- "I really regret not talking about it. It is OK to suffer, but as long as you talk about it. It is not a weakness. Weakness is having a problem and not recognizing it and not solving that problem."
- "It's a huge shame she's not here. But I hope she'd be incredibly proud of what we managed to achieve."
- "I first came [to Africa] in 1997, straight after my mum died. My dad told my brother and me to pack our bags - we were going to Africa to get away from it all."
- "We will do everything we can to make sure she's never forgotten, and carry on all of the special gifts and such that she had and that she portrayed when she was alive. I hope that a lot of my mother's talents are shown in the work that I do."
- "I hope she's looking down [at our family] with tears in her eyes being incredibly proud of what we've established. I'm sure she's longing for me to have kids so she can be a grandmother again . . . but I hope that everything we do privately and officially, that it makes her proud."
- "Losing your mother at such a young age does end up shaping your life massively, of course it does. And now I find myself trying to be there and give advice to other people who are in similar positions."
- "Every day, depending on what I'm doing, I wonder what it would be like if she was here, and what she would say, and how she would be making everybody else laugh. Who knows what the situation would be, what the world would be like, if she were still around."

We Tried the Workout That Claims to Burn More Calories in 20 Minutes That Most Do in 90
So here's the deal: EMS training - electrical muscle stimulation - is massively on the rise in the fitness world. It's huge in Europe, blowing up in New York, and slowly making its way to other major cities; as of now, there's only one approved EMS machine in San Francisco. Mega athletes like Usain Bolt and Cristiano Ronaldo have been using it, and because I'd literally drink Cristiano Ronaldo's bathwater I'm a serious investigative journalist, I knew I needed to see for myself if this workout is all its cracked up to be.
Full disclosure: there isn't much conclusive scientific evidence yet saying that this is effective - the studies that have been done are quite small. I did a little digging online and also asked a few trainers what their thoughts were, and they gave mixed reviews (some were either unfamiliar or not into it). However, my acupuncturist, who uses this technology for physical therapy (on me, actually), thought it was a great concept.
"You look like you're auditioning to be a CGI character in a Peter Jackson film."
One (poorly translated) 2015 study used EMS training on 15 subjects in Malaysia and said that EMS can "improve athlete strength" and "increase muscle size and strength." A 40-person study from Budapest in 2012 (conducted by an EMS training company called E-Fit) also had positive results. A third study, published in 2005 in the American Physiological Society's Journal of Applied Physiology, showed remarkable results on 15 "sedentary adults," citing "significant improvements in exercise capacity (including cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength)" after EMS training. "This is the first study to demonstrate that such an effect is possible with use of a form of EMS that does not involve loading of the limbs or joints and that does not involve performance of external work." A 2011 French study said, "EMS training results in significant increase of muscle strength," and a 2011 American study (on 16 young female gymnasts) called EMS "a relevant and efficient complement to voluntary resistance training."
Conversely, the American Council on Exercise didn't see the same amazing effects. They commissioned a study in 2000 on 29 college athletes and reported the results as insignificant, calling EMS "ineffective [and] painful" (sweet). Some call EMS "bunk" or "pseudoscience." What I'm trying to say is this is a personal review, not a scientific declaration of fact. OK? OK. Proceed.
Here's what went down with my experience with Jose Luis Zamorano and Alex Albelda - Spanish entrepreneurs, certified trainers, and founders of MetafitClub, the only EMS training company in San Francisco as of now.
You Get All Sorts of Strapped In
Before you even get to the warmup (depicted above), you get strapped in. Before you get strapped in, you change into specific EMS garb - what Jose described as the "right combination of cotton and spandex" for the electrode suit I'd be getting harnessed into. It feels like regular old black capri leggings and a three-quarter-length tee - no compression, just form-fitting.
Of note: they need hot water to spray down the suit, so you're actually pretty damp when you're working out. Fortunately, you notice less because you immediately begin to sweat.
Once you're all strapped up and look like you're auditioning to be a CGI character in a Peter Jackson film, you'll get plugged into the machine and the trainer will start to light you up, stimulating one muscle group at a time from calves to biceps until your whole body is abuzz.
It Doesn't Hurt
It's tingly, not painful - though I was on a very "weak" setting, as my trainers so kindly reminded me (whatever!) until my darling colleague said, "You're going too easy on her; turn it up! Make it harder!"
I laughed immediately upon the initial sensation, which was a relief because I had been particularly anxious leading up to the shock. It's like a strange tickling sensation, and more amusing (at first) than intimidating. If you've ever had this kind of treatment at physical therapy, it's just like that!
It's Intense!
My muscles burned out rapidly, and I was immediately fatigued. Everything feels more difficult when your muscles are contracting like that - so much so that I actually felt embarrassed. "I swear to God I can hold a plank longer than this!" I scream-whispered to the trainers as my elbows buckled and I dropped to my knees. The two-pound SPRI ball made my muscles feel like I was holding a 15-pound weight . . . it was kind of insane.
After only 20 minutes, I felt as tired as I normally do after 40 to 60 minutes of strength training.
"Each exercise was exponentially harder for me and my sad muscles, who likely felt very betrayed."
You Can Do Pretty Much Any Exercise
What I find to be the most awesome about EMS training is that it's not a style of exercise, it's just intensifying whatever you want to do, so you can get more physical work done in a shorter amount of time (like I said earlier, I'm not a scientist, just reporting on my experience). So with that in mind, you can really apply EMS to anything - Pilates, yoga, stationary cycling, weight training, bodyweight exercises - you name it.
What that means is that even if you're brand new to fitness, you don't have to learn complex movement patterns to get a great workout. You also don't even have to lift huge weights (though you definitely should still work toward lifting heavy!). Someone who is older or has bad joints or limited mobility could possibly benefit from something like this, as you don't have to necessarily do plyo or any kind of high-impact exercise, but you'll still get an awesome workout.
In my case, we did a series of lightly weighted and bodyweight moves like donkey kicks, Russian twists, planks, and bridges. As mentioned, each exercise was exponentially harder for me (and my sad muscles, who likely felt very betrayed) with the stimulation than without.
I Definitely Got Sore
The next day, I felt more intense soreness in my abs. Though I didn't have the kind of soreness I get from my personal trainer (she has a Master's degree in kicking my ass), I had to remember that the EMS trainers from MetafitClub put me at a particularly low setting so I could get used to the machine. But for being a low-setting workout, I deeeefinitely still felt it.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, I loved my experience. In only 20 minutes, I got tired and sore and felt like I got a great workout in. How's that for efficient?? The trainers told me that to see results, you should be doing EMS training sessions (at 20 minutes each) twice a week. That made sense to me - no one is going to see overnight results from anything. But the soreness I felt definitely indicated that some serious work had been done in a short period of time.
The FDA has approved the use of these machines with trainer supervision, meaning it's (most likely, please don't sue me) not going to hurt you. Even the studies that had not-so-awesome results were more neutral than negative and didn't showcase any adverse effects.
My best advice is to try it if the technology is available to you - prices for SF's MetafitClub private sessions range from $80-$125, depending on your package and style of training. As mentioned, it's new and only just coming to bigger cities in the US, but do a little digging and see if a trainer near you offers this kind of training. You'll be shocked at the results.

How to Get Sexy, Cellulite-Free Legs This Summer - According to Top Derms
Image Source: Popsugar Photography / Sheila Gim
On the first warm-weather day of Spring, I went to work in a sundress for the first time since last year. As I sat at my desk, I looked down at my previously pants-covered legs and was horrified. They looked like they were covered in dust, were paler than any other part of my body, and somehow had become uneven and splotchy. Winter had done quite a number on my normally smooth, carefully buffed and bronzed legs.
If you recently had a similar experience, don't freak out. I turned to dermatologists Dr. Dendy Engleman and Dr. Heidi Waldorf, director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. to find out how to treat some common skin issues, like cellulite and varicose veins. You and I won't have to wear jeans in 85 degree weather to hide the damage cold weather did to our stems.
Keratosis Pilaris
You know those raised bumps you see on the back of your arms, legs, and sometimes even your butt? That isn't acne but actually keratosis pilaris (KP), sometimes referred to as chicken skin. The bumps are caused by a buildup of keratin in hair follicles, causing rough plugs.
According to Dr. Engleman, treating these harmless but unsightly bumps isn't difficult. "The most important concept of controlling KP is moisturizing the skin," Engleman explains. She also expressed that products containing chemical exfoliants can also help the problem. "My favorite products involve ingredients that can break up that excess keratin buildup such as alpha hydroxy acids, like lactic acid and glycolic acid, and beta hydroxy acids like salicylic acid."
If the problem persists, Dr. Engleman suggests trying retinoids, which are vitamin-A-derived and promote cell turnover. "Retinoids can gently exfoliate to remove dead skin cells if hydroxy acids don't give a noticeable improvement."
Dry, Scaly Skin
If you've noticed an uneven, scaly texture on your legs, it means the skin cells aren't falling off like they're supposed to. This can happen during cold weather or after using products with drying or irritating ingredients. Dr. Waldorf suggests exclusively using gentle products to prevent this. "The best way to prevent and treat scaly skin is to use a gentle cleanser that won't strip your skin, like Dove Body Wash ($6), followed by a moisturizer like Eucerin Smoothing Repair Lotion ($9)."
Discoloration
Sometimes a dark mark can be left behind on our skin from a cut or bug bite, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. After your skin is red, itchy, or swollen, the skin can heal and look brown afterward. Unfortunately, dark marks on our legs fade slower than on our face and can last months.
Although you can use laser treatments to get rid of them, Dr. Waldorf suggests waiting until the Fall or Winter for these treatments. Instead, there's an easier route for even skin tone: "In the meantime, moisturize, [and] use alpha hydroxy acid and acid moisturizers to improve the pigment. [You can also] cover the spots with leg makeup or self tanner."
Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are dilated blood vessels caused by increased pressure on the veins. The causes of the pressure can range from standing for too long to pregnancy or even obesity. Dr. Engleman explains that there are two procedures available to get rid of these veins depending on the severity. "Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment and it involves injecting a solution into the vein that forces it to collapse, which stops blood flow. The vein will turn into a scar and fade after a few weeks."
If you have smaller spider veins, Dr. Engleman suggests laser treatment because these veins are harder to inject.

Cellulite
Cellulite happens when pockets of fat beneath the skin become squashed against tissue and create a dimpled appearance. Almost everyone has some amount of it, and according to Dr. Waldorf, it isn't connected to being overweight. If you'd like to reduce the appearance of cellulite, however, there are a few procedures and methods to remedy the appearance.
Injections
Dr. Waldorf suggest a filler such as Sculptra or Radiesse in conjunction with a procedure like ulthera. "[The filler]s stimulate improvement and filling of the dimples [while] ulthera tightens tissue.
Dry Brushing and Exfoliation
If injections sound too extreme, Dr. Engleman suggests trying to exfoliate the area. "Exfoliation helps to smooth the appearance [of cellulite] by increasing blood flow to the area and reducing inflammation." One method the doctor suggests is dry brushing.
Ingrown Hairs
More frequent hair removal during the Summer months leads to a lot of painful, red ingrown hairs. Dr. Engelman has some suggestions for those more prone to razor bumps and irritation. "You may want to exfoliate the area to ensure that the hair can come cleanly out. Also, try shaving the way your hair grows. Shaving against hair growth gives you a closer shave but the blunt-tipped end of hairs can grow back into the skin rather than up and out."
If those tips don't help, it may be time to try depilatory creams, laser hair removal, or electrolysis.
If you already have razor burn or ingrown hairs, Dr. Waldorf has a solution. "If you have redness or irritation, rub in an over-the-counter 1 percent hydrocortisone cream," the doctor explains.
Bruises
Some of us bruise like a peach. The black-and-blue marks that are a result of our clumsy behavior are a result of pooled blood under the skin due to trauma that causes blood vessels to burst. Dr. Engelman suggests a few oils that can improve the appearance. "If you're prone to bruising, topical arnica or helichrysum oil can help with the swelling and bruising by aiding the reabsorption of the blood."

Maybe It's Time to Stop Asking Goldie Hawn Why She Hasn't Married Kurt Russell
Image Source: Getty / Max Mumby / Indigo
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell first met while starring in 1968's The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, but it wasn't until 1983 that they began dating while working on their second joint film, Swing Shift. The couple recently rang in their 34th anniversary, an incredible feat for any couple but especially one made up of Hollywood A-listers. But what is particularly unique about Kurt and Goldie's relationship is the fact that they aren't married. Over their three decades together, they haven't felt the need to "make it official," and it's something that still seems to both fascinate and perplex the public.
"A lasting relationship isn't about marriage. It's about compatibility and communication."
It feels like in nearly every interview Goldie does with a major publication, she is asked about her choice not to marry Kurt. Despite the fact that she has made her reasons painfully clear over the years, Goldie is still bombarded with questions about how she could so bravely stay in a relationship with a man and have the audacity not to enter into a legally recognized union that has a large chance of ending in divorce. Like, how dare she?! Goldie has answered these questions with aplomb because she's Goldie f*cking Hawn, but it might officially be time to maybe trust that she knows what she's doing in her own relationship and accept that maybe their arrangement isn't that hard to wrap a head around. Goldie certainly isn't the first celebrity to eschew marriage in favor of a more modern, independent romantic lifestyle, and we should stop acting like it's some wacky concept.
"There's something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other. For me, I chose to stay, Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice."
Image Source: Getty / Steve Granitz
What's worth noting is that being a woman with 50 years in the entertainment business, a woman who scored a spot in the The Nutcracker at 10 years old, opened her own ballet academy, and founded a charity dedicated to improving the academic lives of young kids, should warrant some more interesting, thought-provoking questions than why she hasn't felt the need to marry a man who she has been in a committed relationship with since many of us were in diapers, a man with whom she has built a beautiful family and a complete life full of love, understanding, respect, "fun, laughs, and sex."
"The question is, 'Why (get married)?' it's not, 'Why not?' We love each other. We fight the way people are supposed to fight. We love our lives together."
The societal pressure to get married is everywhere and usually focused on women. Getting hitched is touted as the ultimate goal for us ladies, which could explain why we rarely hear about Kurt Russell being asked these types of questions - for some reason it falls on Goldie to constantly explain their joint decision to enjoy life without a marriage license. But instead of putting the emphasis on Why haven't you guys gotten married? we should shift the conversation to include more questions about their commitment to keeping things fresh after 34 years, helping their children become Hollywood stars in their own right, and staying fly as hell on the red carpet. After all, not being married might actually be the biggest "secret" to Goldie and Kurt's relationship success - so can't we just celebrate it?

The Meaning Behind That Tiny Jar Symbol on All of Your Beauty Products
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Emily Faulstitch
Sadly, beauty products are not immortal. In case you didn't know, makeup and skincare products have varying shelf lives. It's important to know their respective expiration dates so that you don't end up wasting your time with a dud or - even worse - irritating your skin. Fortunately, most brands will let you know exactly when a product expires thanks to a handy symbol you might not have known about.
On each beauty product, you can find a tiny little jar symbol with a number on it. That jar is referred to as the "period after opening" symbol, and it indicates how many months you can safely use a product after opening it. Is your mind blown yet?
The European Commission made the symbol mandatory in 2003, however, the United States currently does not require all cosmetics to state the expiration date via the PAO symbol. That being said, the Food and Drug Administration does encourage it. In a statement online, the FDA explained, "Manufacturers are responsible for making sure their products are safe. FDA considers determining a product's shelf life to be part of the manufacturer's responsibility."
So next time you find yourself questioning whether a product is past its prime, just look out for that tiny jar to know for certain.
David Beckham Brings Brooklyn Along For His Big Movie Premiere
David and Brooklyn Beckham made quite the stylish duo when they attended the London premiere of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword on Wednesday. David, who makes his acting debut in the film directed by pal Guy Ritchie, cut a suave figure in a light brown suit, while Brooklyn kept things cool in a white t-shirt and slacks. Sadly, the rest of the Beckham brood did not make it out for the event, but the pair was in good company with David's costar, Charlie Hunnam, who, if we're being honest, could not look any hotter in the film. Victoria also gave her husband a sweet shout-out on Instagram, writing, "So proud of @davidbeckham! @kingarthurmovie x VB #KingArthur," alongside a clip of the movie. Check out this behind-the-scenes video of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword before it hits theaters on May 12.

8 Little White Lies That Are OK to Tell Your Spouse
Honesty is the best policy . . . isn't it? Well sometimes, it makes sense to tell a little white lie here and there to your spouse. Really. As contradictory as it sounds, a white lie on occasion will most likely save everyone's sanity. Here are eight little secrets you can keep from your spouse without it hurting your marriage.
1. The Outfit Compliment
Really, if your spouse looks like an utter fool, it's probably best you say something to save this person from embarrassment. However, there are many occasions someone might not really "rock" that new shirt, dress, or pair of pants but . . . your spouse loves it! It's best you let your spouse feel good in that fashion choice. Don't say a word, because if you do, most likely, it's going to be the wrong thing!
2. When You Hate the BFF
If your spouse's BFF is a big fat pain in the butt to you, most likely your spouse will see that the two of you don't "jive" well. But if you really can't stand this person, it's advisable that you keep some of your critique to yourself. You don't have to state that you love your spouse's bestie, but you can hold back, and, if directly asked, soften the blow with a white lie like, "Well, we're just different people." Trust me, don't mess with a spouse's best friend . . . unless the person is toxic for your spouse.
3. A Facebook Request From an Ex
OK, this is tricky territory here. Number one, don't accept this request. Number two, don't engage in an emotional affair. Now that you heeded my solid advice, here's another thing: don't tell your spouse about this friend request - just delete it! This is information that won't make your partner happy and, also, it is not essential. Just delete the request and go on with your day.
4. A Hot Co-Worker
We all have our bucket list crushes of celebrities, but if someone in our real-life world is sexy as hell, let's NOT announce it to our spouse! If your spouse asks you outright if you find your co-worker sexy, just say he or she is attractive but not your type. If he or she can see through it, just say seriously, this person doesn't really do it for you. You don't need your spouse envisioning you having Don Draper-like affairs with your co-worker.
5. Their Cooking Prowess
Your spouse spends the day on Pinterest or online or in an old-fashioned recipe book cooking up something special for you. You sit down to eat it while your spouse beams with pride . . . and you take your first bite. And it tastes like utter garbage. Truly, garbage. Do you tell the spouse who has been sweating over a stove all day that this meal, quite frankly, sucks? No. Not if you want to live another day as a married person.
6. When the Joke Isn't THAT Funny
You shouldn't fake laugh at everything your spouse says, but if you're out at a gathering and everyone laughs at your spouse's joke but you don't find it so funny, do you tell your spouse if he or she asks? No. You don't. You say, "Sure dear, it was funny," unless it was blatantly hurtful or offensive.
7. The Five Pound Question
If your spouse has gained a lot of weight, you can't lie when the person asks you if he or she did. But if it's a few pounds here or there, just say you don't notice or instead, "I don't know, but you look wonderful/sexy/beautiful/handsome to me."
8. Someone Flirted With You
If someone flirts with you other than your spouse, be glad to be alive! Flirting is fun - as long as it's hands off. However, you don't need to give the detailed report to your spouse.
25 Mother's Day Gifts She'll Actually Use
Let's be real, Mother's Day gifts often end up sitting in the trash (eventually) or collecting dust in the closet. It's not like Mom doesn't love you or like your gift; she just doesn't quite know what the hell to do with it. So that's why this year, you should skip the cookie jar for something a little more practical. Think about what she uses every day, what she can't live without, and what she's obsessed with. You do know her best; be realistic about what she'll love and what she'll use. Here's 25 gift ideas to help you get started.
This Is Exactly What Happens to Your Body When You Don't Take a Rest Day
If you're someone who has a hard time giving yourself a break, and you've been skipping rest days, then listen up: while we admire your dedication, skipping your recovery is doing you more harm than you think.
We wanted to find out exactly what happens to your body when you train too hard, so we talked to Michelle Opperman, director of group fitness for Crunch, and Jan Milano, CSCS and sports performance coach at DIAKADI. Did you know the effects can be so severe physiologically and psychologically that there's a name for it? It's called "Overtraining Syndrome."
Want to know what Overtraining Syndrome looks like? Here's what happens to your body when you don't take time to recover from intense exercise (or endurance events!):
- Glycogen stores are depleted. Opperman and Milano both noted that your glycogen decreases. Glycogen is your body's energy source, and not something you want to eliminate. Milano says "decreased glycogen may contribute to the lowered lactate responses," meaning your muscles fatigue more quickly.
- Corticosteroids increase. We know that cortisone and cortisol (stress hormones) are not good for weight loss, and even add to belly-fat retention. Milano told us that these elevated levels also depress the immune system by inhibiting the reaction of lymphocytes to antigens (basically, the fighter cells can't fight the bad invader cells). So overtraining equals a higher likelihood of getting sick.
- Your heart goes into overdrive. "Both resting heart rate and submaximal exercise heart rate are increased," said Milano. Be nice to your heart. Take a breather.
- Your performance suffers. Opperman told us that when sufficient rest is not included in a training program, your ability to perform (i.e., continue training, growing muscle, getting stronger) plateaus or declines, because your muscles literally cannot recover and regenerate. So things just get worse and worse.
- You'll lose muscle mass. Consistent breakdown + no recovery = bye, muscles. That's the opposite of what you're trying to do, right?
- You'll feel AWFUL. The tiny tears in your muscles cannot heal, which results in inflammation, swelling, and tenderness. Opperman says the feeling will "become extreme, lasting for days." She also noted that you'll feel physically exhausted for an extended period as well, which could make it hard for you to perform your day to day functions.
- It messes with your mind. Muscular fatigue is not the only thing Opperman and Milano warned about. The fatigue and distress extend psychologically, and Milano noted that you'll notice mental changes before physical ones. "Decreased vigor, motivation, and confidence; raised tension, depression, and anger accompany an individual's recovery," said Milano.
Do yourself a favor. Go to yoga, don't skip savasana, do your cooldowns, and take a day off to recover. Need some pointers? Make sure you keep our recovery checklist handy, or try any of these recovery essentials.

50+ Photos That Show the Outpouring of Love at Princess Diana's Public Funeral
When Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car crash in August 1997, it seemed as though the world was mourning just as deeply as her own family. Diana, dubbed "The People's Princess," made an indelible mark on those in the UK as well as around the globe; her funeral, which was held on Sept. 6, was watched or listened to by an estimated 2.5 billion people worldwide - making it one of the most watched events in history. In London, a crowd of nearly one million people gathered to trace Diana's coffin from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey to her final resting place at the Spencer family's home in Althorp.
Diana's sons, Harry and William, followed their mother's coffin alongside their father, Prince Charles, and their uncle Charles, the Earl Spencer. The visibly moved onlookers blanketed the streets with heartfelt notes, bouquets, and teddy bears, and flower petals rained down from bystanders along the procession route. People also gathered in Hyde Park, where the ceremony was being aired on a giant screen, while celebrities like Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Hillary Clinton, and Elton John attended the official ceremony inside Westminster Abbey. We're looking back on the outpouring of love from the public at Diana's funeral. Scroll through to see all the tearjerking photos.

Pippa Middleton Touches Her Fiancé's Butt at Church Ahead of Their Wedding
Pippa Middleton and James Matthews are less than two weeks away from their wedding day, and they definitely have that "we're about to get married" glow. The couple, who are bending the rules for their ceremony in order to let Prince Harry's girlfriend, Meghan Markle, attend, were photographed at church services in London on Tuesday. Pippa, who looked gorgeous in a peach coat, stared lovingly at her soon-to-be hubby and playfully grabbed his butt as they made their way inside the church. While we'll have to wait until May 20 for the really beautiful moments - like Pippa interacting with Prince George and Princess Charlotte or her older sister, Kate (who won't be serving as maid of honor) - we'll gladly smile at these until then.
Take a Drink Every Time Kevin Bacon Says the Word "D*ck" in This Interview
Kevin Bacon stars in the new Amazon series I Love Dick, and has been making the rounds to promote the show before its May 12 debut. On Tuesday, the actor stopped by Today to chat with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb about the project, in which he plays a renowned Texas artist and was required to show full-frontal nudity. During his interview, Kevin went over the f*cking top when talking about the show and probably said the word "d*ck" no less than 15 times during the five-minute video. If this was a drinking game, you'd be sh*tfaced.

If you've seen the trailer for the adaptation of Nicola Yoon's Everything, Everything, than you've no doubt found yourself googling its star Nick Robinson. While the 22-year-old actor's charisma and looks are comparable to fellow YA star Ansel Elgort, there's another reason why he looks so familiar. In his short nine years of acting, he's actually been in a handful of well-known movies and shows. Since you'll probably be seeing his face everywhere after the film's release on May 19, we've gathered a few fun facts about him to jumpstart your newfound obsession.
1. He's From Washington
Nick was born in Seattle on March 22, 1995. At age 11, he made his professional acting debut in a local production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and eventually signed with The Savage Agency in LA two years later. Unfortunately, the Writers Guild of America strike was in full swing at the time, so he returned home with his family and continued acting in local theater productions.
2. He's the Oldest of Five
He describes his family as the modern-day Brady Bunch, with four younger siblings and two older half-siblings from his father's previous marriage.
3. He Played the Nephew of Two of Your Favorite Actresses
After participating in a few local Seattle productions, he eventually returned to LA to pursue acting. Even though it was only his second audition in LA, he managed to score a role as Melissa Joan Hart's nephew on ABC Family's Melissa & Joey. In 2015, he costarred with Ty Simpkins as brothers visiting their aunt (Bryce Dallas Howard) in Jurassic World.

4. This Isn't His First Book-to-Movie Adaptation
In January 2016, he starred alongside Chloë Grace Moretz in an adaptation of Rick Yancey's novel, The 5th Wave.
5. He's a Disney Channel Alum
While on hiatus from Melissa & Joey, Nick worked on the Disney Channel original movie Frenemies with Bella Thorne and Zendaya.
6. He Deferred NYU to Pursue Acting
After graduating from high school in 2013, Nick was admitted to NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Studies, which allows students to design their own interdisciplinary program to fit their specific interests. However, he deferred for a year so that he could continue working on Melissa & Joey.
7. He Plays an Unlikely Instrument
While doing a show called A Thousand Clowns in Seattle, he learned how to play the ukulele.
