Experts Share the Perfect Snack For Maximum Weight Loss
It's not just for preschoolers! Snack time is important for adults, too, because it can satiate hunger between meals to prevent overeating and help you lose weight. Snacks can also be a way to get valuable nutrients you're missing from meals alone. But not all snacks are good ones. We've enlisted the expertise of two nutritionists - Stephanie Clarke, RD, and Willow Jarosh, RD, of C&J Nutrition - to share the perfect equation for how to choose a delicious and filling snack that will help you reach your weight-loss goals. Follow their advice below to start seeing results.
Calories
Aim for two 150-calorie snacks each day. Think of them as ways to fill nutrition holes in your diet, such as getting your fill of fiber or a boost of calcium.
Carbs
Anywhere from 40 to 50 percent of your calories at snack time should come from carbs, which works out to 14 to 20 grams. Choose high-fiber carbs such as fruit, whole grains, and starchy veggies like peas, corn, sweet potato, pumpkin, and Winter squash. Carbohydrates that are naturally high in fiber tend to be less refined and processed and also typically yield a larger portion size for fewer calories, making them more satisfying.
Protein
Go for six to 10 grams of protein, which is 15 to 20 percent of your total snack calories. Protein is essential in order to make what you nosh on feel more satisfying. Protein also helps to even out the rate that carbohydrates enter your bloodstream, so if you eat a snack that's low in protein, a spike in your blood sugar levels could result in stronger cravings and the need to munch on more.
Fats
Far should constitute 30 to 40 percent of your snack's calories, which works out to between six and 10 grams. Including healthy fats also adds to the "I feel satisfied" feeling. The one thing to watch out for is portion size, since fats like nuts, seeds, and avocado tend to be high in calories.
Fiber
Getting enough fiber in your snack - at least three grams - is a must to not only help you feel satiated for longer, but to also help you reach your daily goal of 25 grams. Getting your fill of fiber will ensure you stay regular, which can help you avoid that bloated feeling, making you feel more energetic. It can also help maintain stable blood sugar levels, which keeps cravings at bay.
Sugars
Aim for no more than 10 grams of total sugar and no more than four grams of added sugar (one teaspoon of honey, sugar, or maple syrup).
Timing
Most people like to include their two 150-calorie snacks between their three main meals, so one in the late morning and one in the late afternoon. A good rule of thumb is to eat every couple of hours, so find the schedule that works for you. Maybe you eat a later lunch and an earlier dinner so an afternoon snack isn't necessary but a bedtime snack is. Remember that experiencing a little hunger is OK, but snacking can prevent that famished feeling that makes people overeat. And eating late at night won't cause weight gain, but overdoing it on your daily calorie intake will. If you know you like to eat a little something before bed, make sure you save 150 calories in order to stick to your daily limit.
Eating and Working Out
If you're grabbing a pre-workout snack, aim for a 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein. After a workout, go for a 2:1 ratio of carbs to protein. A banana with some nut butter or a small smoothie is a great option. For workouts that are an hour or shorter, don't stress too much about getting the exact amount. As long as your snack includes a combo of carbs, protein, and healthy fats, and is under 150 calories, you're good! Generally it's good to enjoy a pre-workout snack 30 to 90 minutes before a workout, but eating beforehand isn't a necessity. Some people prefer working out on an empty stomach, so do what's right for you. Then refuel with a post-workout snack within 30 to 60 minutes.
A Few Examples of Snacks
The above info would make an ideal snack, but if you can't meet all the requirements, it's OK to fall short of one of these - fats, carbs, fiber, or protein - just make sure your snack meets the other three.
- Avocado Toast: Take half a slice of whole wheat bread, smear with one tablespoon avocado, and top with sliced or mashed hard-boiled egg, two slices of tomato, and an eighth-teaspoon sprinkling of chia seeds.

Snack Mistakes to Avoid
- Not enough variety: While a cheese stick seems like a healthy snack, it's only offering you protein, so you'll soon feel hungry afterward. To feel satiated, make sure your snack has at least two of these - carbohydrate, protein, and fat - or, better yet, aim for all three.
- Skipping: If you head into lunch and dinner completely starving, you know all too well how easy it is to eat way more calories than normal. Snacking between meals controls hunger, which controls cravings and can help you consume fewer daily calories.
- Not counting calories: A snack is just that - a snack. It's not a minimeal, so stick to that 150-calorie amount. Be mindful that prepackaged snacks like granola bars, protein bars, smoothies, or bags of crackers can offer almost 200 calories or more. On the same token, mindlessly reaching into a bag can result in devouring more than one portion without you even realizing it. So measure out your portion and put the bag away!

The Safe Place Prince Harry and Prince William Were When Diana Died
Princess Diana passed away in a tragic car accident in Paris in August 1997, and the abrupt loss of her life is still felt by both her family and the public that loved her. Diana, who had a tumultuous marriage to Prince Charles and a complicated relationship with the royal family in general before her death, didn't bring her children, Prince William and Prince Harry, with her during that fateful trip. Instead, the two boys, who were 15 and 12 at the time, were with their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
William and Harry were wrapping up spending the Summer with the queen at Balmoral Castle, a royal residence in Scotland. Since Diana's accident happened after midnight, the queen instructed her staff to not disturb the boys and to let them sleep in before telling them the news. She also reportedly had them remove all TVs and radios from the castle so the boys wouldn't hear gossip about their mother's death and could grieve in private.
Despite Queen Elizabeth receiving harsh backlash for the way she handled Diana's death, William later opened up about just how much his grandmother's consideration meant to him all those years ago. "Having lost my mother at a young age, it's been particularly important to me that I've had somebody like the queen to look up to and who's been there and who has understood some of the more complex issues when you lose a loved one," he said in the Sky News's documentary The Queen at 90. "She's been incredibly supportive and I've really appreciated her guidance."

Here's What the Royal Family Prefers to Call Kate Middleton
Kate Middleton has been in the spotlight ever since she began dating Prince William back in 2003. While she typically goes by the title the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate is also known as Princess William of Wales or simply Kate Middleton. Still, Prince William often refers to her as Catherine given that she was born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton. While growing up in the English village of Bucklebury, she was known as Catherine among her friends and family, and it wasn't until she went to the University of St. Andrews that she garnered the nickname "Kate."
Kate married William in 2011, and that's when she officially became Catherine Elizabeth, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge, as listed on Prince George's birth certificate. Just like William, the palace also refers to Kate as Catherine. During an interview with BBC's Radio 1 in April, Scott Mills questioned the fact that Prince Harry referred to his sister-in-law as "Cath" in a recent video, asking, "Everyone calls you Kate, don't they?" "I will answer to most things," she replied. Well, there you have it.

Chris Cornell's Wife Is "Heartbroken and Devastated" About His Toxicology Report
Chris Cornell died by suicide on May 17, and on Friday, a completed toxicology report revealed the Soundgarden frontman used prescription drugs at the time of his death. Following the release of the report, his wife, Vicky, issued an emotional statement to People, saying, "Many of us who know Chris well, noticed that he wasn't himself during his final hours and that something was very off. We have learned from this report that several substances were found in his system. After so many years of sobriety, this moment of terrible judgement seems to have completely impaired and altered his state of mind. Something clearly went terribly wrong and my children and I are heartbroken and are devastated that this moment can never be taken back."
She also thanked fans for their support, adding, "We very much appreciate all of the love we have received during this extremely difficult time and are dedicated to helping others in preventing this type of tragedy." Chris was found unresponsive with a band around his neck in the bathroom of his MGM Grand hotel room in Detroit and was pronounced dead when medics arrived on the scene. Chris and Vicky tied the knot in 2004 and share three children, daughter Toni, son Christopher, and daughter Lillian from Chris's previous marriage to Susan Silver.
This "Nightmare" Wedding Story Has the Internet Outraged For Good Reason
Wedding etiquette has become more relaxed and less traditional over the years, but what one man did at his best friend's wedding is widely being viewed as disrespectful across social media. According to a recent submission on Slate's "Dear Prudence" relationship column, one woman says her husband's best friend/best man, "Jack," proposed to his girlfriend, "Jane," in the middle of her wedding!
"The entire atmosphere felt moving. So moving in fact that John stopped midceremony to propose to his longtime girlfriend, "Jane," and reveal her pregnancy," the anonymous woman recalled. "I couldn't even hear the vows my husband wrote or the rest of the ceremony over the noise of Jane's happy sobs, her very surprised family who were also guests, and people seated nearby congratulating her."
If that wasn't horrific enough, what Jack did later that evening was the icing on the cake. No pun intended. "When John gave his toast, he apologized for being caught up in the moment, and then proceeded to talk about he and Jane's future with nary a mention of us."
The woman in question asked if she and her husband were "angry over nothing" or were they justified for wanting to end their friendship with "John." It didn't take long for the internet to weigh in with their (passionate) thoughts on the awkward ordeal. Check out some of the reactions to the now-viral wedding nightmare ahead.

Eric Dane Is Back on the Red Carpet With His Family After Depression Battle Reveal
Eric Dane looked happy and healthy when he attended the annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Brentwood, CA, on Saturday night. The Grey's Anatomy alum cut a suave figure in a black suit and was joined by his family, wife Rebecca Gayheart (who cofounded the event) and their two daughters, Billie, 7, and Georgia, 5. The adorable foursome gathered for photos together on the red carpet, and little Billie and Georgia were as cute as can be in their matching outfits. While there, Rebecca also talked about her family's Summer plans, telling E! News, "Daddy's working in town, so we're going to be hanging close, we'll be in Malibu a lot, a lot of local trips visiting family."
The glamorous charity event marked Eric's first public appearance since his rep revealed that production on his hit TNT show, The Last Ship, had been temporarily shut down in May so that he can deal with depression. "Eric asked for a break to deal with personal issues," his rep said. "He suffers from depression and has asked for a few weeks of downtime and the producers kindly granted that request. He looks forward to returning." According to People, The Last Ship will return on Aug. 20 for its fourth season.

Tom Brady Goes Into Full Dad Mode While Playing Football With Son Jack
Tom Brady's son seems to be following in his footsteps! On Friday, the Patriots quarterback and his 9-year-old son, Jack, participated in a charity football match in support of Best Buddies International at Harvard Stadium in Massachusetts. The nonprofit organization aims to enhance the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and once again, Jack stole the spotlight from his famous dad. Not only did Jack score several touchdowns, but he appeared to have a blast as he ran passes next to his dad while dressed in khaki shorts, a white polo, and blue and white sneakers.
The proud dad even shared a cute video of the two hugging on Instagram, writing, "Proud of my son/long snapper tonight in the @bestbuddies football game #bradytobrady." Jack is Tom's oldest son - he shares him with ex Bridget Moynahan. He has two other children with wife Gisele Bündchen, Benjamin, 7, and Vivian, 4.
Witness the Exact Moment a Mom's Dying Wish Was Fulfilled at Her Daughter's Wedding
St. Mary's Hospital recently granted one woman's dying wish by organizing a special garden wedding ceremony so that she could witness her daughter getting married. Debbie Nelson from Madison, WI, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and told the local news station that she arrived at the hospital feeling "very sick, but knowing that I had one goal. And that is to see my daughter get married."
Debbie said she "never expected" the surprise wedding to happen as quickly as it did. All it took was 24 hours for the staff and volunteers to transform the hospital's healing garden into a gorgeous wedding venue for her daughter, Melissa.
"Unbelievably happy and thankful for everything that everybody did in one day. I'm just kind of blown away," Melissa said after tying the knot with her husband. "People came from everywhere and offered to help and made this, like, one of the best days of my entire life," Debbie added. The Way Mike Fisher and Carrie Underwood Met Will Reignite Your Hope For a Future With Leo
Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher have been living in marital bliss since 2010. The duo, who are parents to 2-year-old son Isaiah, have shared so many cute moments together over the years. While it's hard to imagine things getting any sweeter than Carrie surprising Mike's NHL team by singing the national anthem at his game or him supporting her at award shows, it turns out that the start of their love story is probably their best moment of all. During a 2016 appearance on The Tyler Oakley Show, the "Church Bells" singer was asked if she's ever made out with a fan, including her husband. "No, he is!" she said. "I met him at a meet and greet."
She further explained how it all went down on a 2012 episode of Behind the Music. After agreeing to be set up with the hockey pro by her bassist Mike Childers in 2008, Carrie had him come backstage to meet her in order to take some of the pressure off a typical blind date setting. She was immediately taken with the handsome athlete and quickly texted Childers three words that sealed the deal: "Hot, hot, hot." We would have to agree, Carrie.

The Story Behind Jason Momoa's Sexy Eyebrow Scar Is Actually Really Scary
We could sit here all day and talk about how sexy Jason Momoa is (His muscles? Stop. His back? Get out. His large man presence? Done.) But we're not going to do that, because as sure as the day is long, this too is a cold, hard fact. But what we are going to do is talk about his sexy as hell eyebrow scar (yep, the one that makes it look like he's always kind of grinning at you while also giving off an evil villain vibe). While it's easy to assume that a perfect and beautiful human like Jason was born with something so unique, he wasn't, and the story behind it is actually quite scary.
In a 2011 interview with Access Hollywood, the Aquaman actor revealed he got the scar from a man he believed was taking part in a gang initiation. "It was crazy. A guy smashed a pint glass in my face. I got a little over 140 stitches in my face," he said of the bar fight. "[Hair] just doesn't grow there anymore." He also joked that he married wife Lisa Bonet before it happened, so she had to embrace it. "I got my wife beforehand, so . . . if she doesn't like it, too bad. She likes it."

Recall Alert! Frozen Tuna Tested Positive For Hepatitis A
On June 1, the Food and Drug Administration released a statement about its ongoing investigation into potentially contaminated frozen tuna distributed by Hilo Fish. According to the report, the Hawaii Department of Health first discovered the contagious hepatitis A virus in samples of frozen tuna on May 1. Shortly after, on May 18, Hilo Fish Company launched an official recall of tuna from Sustainable Seafood Company and Santa Cruz Seafood, Inc.
So far, there haven't been any illnesses reported in conjunction with the potential frozen tuna contamination, but the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is advising anyone from Texas, Oklahoma, and California who hasn't been vaccinated for the hepatitis A virus and ate raw or under-cooked tuna products in the past two weeks to get treated with post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
Keep reading to see a list of all of the frozen tuna products that have been recalled so far, and make sure to toss out anything that may be affected!
- Frozen Yellowfin tuna steaks from Sustainable Seafood Company
- Yellowfin tuna cubes from Santa Cruz Seafood
- 8 ounce Tuna Steaks from Hilo Fish Company with an expiration date of Oct. 1, 2018
- 15 pound Frozen Yellowfin tuna cubes with an expiration date of April 4, 2019
For extra precaution, the FDA has also provided a list of restaurants and other retail establishments that received the recalled frozen tuna. Better safe than sorry!
You Can Almost Feel the Love at Ariana Grande's Manchester Benefit Concert
Thousands of fans gathered at Ariana Grande's One Love Manchester benefit concert in England on Sunday. The event honored the victims of the bombing during Ariana's Manchester show on May 22 and brought out a handful of stars, including Pharrell Williams, Miley Cyrus, Niall Horan, Justin Bieber, and Katy Perry. The concert kicked off with a moment of silence and also paid tribute to the victims of the recent London Bridge attack.
In addition to performing a few of her famous hits, Ariana delivered an emotional speech, in which she opened up about meeting one of the victims' mothers over the weekend. "I want to also say I had the pleasure of meeting Olivia [Campbell]'s mommy a few days ago. And as soon as I met her I started crying and I gave her a big hug and she said that I should stop crying because Olivia wouldn't have wanted me to cry. And then she told me that Olivia would have wanted to hear the hits."
It was initially unclear whether the concert was still on given Saturday's attack, but Ariana's manager, Scooter Braun, released a statement on Instagram prior to the show saying the show would continue. "After the events last night in London, and those in Manchester just two weeks ago, we feel a sense of responsibility to honor those lost, injured, and affected," he wrote. "We plan to honor them with courage, bravery, and defiance in the face of fear. Today's One Love Manchester benefit concert will not only continue, but will do so with greater purpose. We must not be afraid, and in tribute to all those affected here and around the world, we will bring our voices together and sing loudly." Keep reading for all the best photos.
Prince Harry Honors the London Bridge Attack Victims During First Visit to Singapore
After meeting with Barack Obama and the team that will represent the UK at the Invictus Games, Prince Harry touched down in Singapore on Sunday to kick off his two-day tour of the country. Upon his arrival, Harry stopped by the Jamiyah Education Centre, where he watched a martial arts match and looked on in awe as the competitors took to the mat. He then took part in iftar (the breaking of the fast during Ramadan) by eating porridge and a dish of dates.
Harry also paid tribute to the victims of Saturday's London Bridge attack that left 7 people dead and 30 injured. "Let peace and harmony prevail in communities all over the world," he said as the call to prayer was made by Islamic scholar Muhammad Rafiuddin Ismail. This is Harry's first time in Singapore, and he is expected to attend an Action for Aids reception as well as take part in the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup.

Katy Perry was one of the many stars who took the stage at Ariana Grande's One Love Manchester concert on Sunday. Clad in an all white ensemble, the singer began her performance by asking the crowd to shout "I love you" before launching into an emotional rendition of "Part of Me." During her performance, audience members were shown crying as they sang along. Katy then changed up the energy with a powerful performance of her hit, "Roar." Watch Katy's performance above now.
1 Startup Thinks Blood Transfusions From Teens Could Slow Aging
Turns out the satire in the HBO show, Silicon Valley, isn't exactly fiction. A few days after an episode of the show lampooned a startup for offering blood transfusions to battle aging effects, a real startup pitched a similar program to the Code Conference on June 1.
Ambrosia, according to its website, launched in 2016 and has an objectively ominous mission: "study[ing] the effects of transfusions of young blood plasma." Founder Dr. Jesse Karmazin told the conference that his company currently has approximately 100 patients, most of whom are of retirement age. Ambrosia's mission is bizarre, but it's making a scientific effort to support the idea that young blood could fight the negative symptoms of aging. The company is presently conducting six human clinical trials.
Ambrosia buys its plasma supply from blood banks and CNBC reports that teenagers "donating their blood are not aware that it might be used on healthy adults." Though the donated blood is typically that of a teen, Ambrosia will buy blood from anyone under 25.
Karmazin stressed that Ambrosia's goal was not to cure aging, but to recruit people willing to participate in experiments to measure the potential. So far, Ambrosia's patients have reported positive benefits, but other members of the scientific community have decried the study as unethical. But Ambrosia's general thesis does have at least one high-profile advocate, though he's not actually a client: Peter Thiel. The PayPal founder has expressed interest in studying the effects of young blood transfusions. "I'm looking into parabiosis stuff, which I think is really interesting," Thiel told Inc. in 2016. "This is where they did the young blood into older mice and they found that had a massive rejuvenating effect."
Whatever the science says, it's creepy as hell.
6 Theories About How Orange Is the New Black Season 5 Will Start
Last season of Orange Is the New Black ended with a bang, almost literally. In the final moments of the finale, everything descends into chaos as the inmates riot. Daya gets a hold of CO Humphrey's gun and points it at his face, and that's all we know. In the months since we finished season four, we've locked in on new season five details. Now, with a handful of new pictures and an intense new clip that shows the gripping first minute of the premiere, we're determined to figure out how this all ends up. Let's go over all the possibilities.
1. Daya Shoots Humphrey
This has to be the most obvious outcome. She's already pointing the gun, and Humphrey is right there. Everyone knows Humphrey is an awful, awful man. Plus, I mean, we're sure Daya still has some hard feelings after Bennett broke her heart. Maybe she's got some issues to work out. So, for all those reasons, she fires.
2. Someone Else Fires an Entirely Different Gun
Just because we hear a gun fire, it doesn't necessarily mean it's Daya's. After all, with such an intensely escalating situation, it's possible someone calls for backup. Perhaps there's a chance someone else arrives on the scene with another gun, deems Daya a danger, and fires to put her out of commission.
3. Daya Shoots the Ceiling to Shut Everyone Up
In the first minute, it's clear Daya is overwhelmed. It seems like it's so loud, she can't hear herself think. Maybe she just fires the gun into the ceiling so everyone stops screaming at her. Then, with a clear head, she can make her choice - which, really, could be any of these other options.
4. Another Inmate Grabs the Gun and Shoots Humphrey
With so many angry, riled up inmates surrounding Daya, what's to stop someone else from grabbing the gun and shooting Humphrey? After all, he's forced Maritza to eat dead flies at gunpoint, and he's just forced Suzanne and Maureen into a crazy brutal brawl. It's safe to say a lot of these inmates want him dead, so if Daya doesn't do it, someone else will.
5. Daya Accidentally (or Deliberately) Shoots Someone Else
Daya has been underestimated and marginalized by many other inmates for plenty of seasons. That might explain why she just might snap and shoot someone else entirely. Then again, as we mentioned above, this is a high-stress situation, and she's clearly overwhelmed, which is why she might just shut her eyes and fire at will, no aim required.
6. No One Fires a Gun
Listen, we hate to bring this up, but it's a possibility. Maybe it's all just a fake-out, just a juicy sound effect to keep us on our toes. Since the teasers have yet to show Daya (or anyone) firing a gun, we have to consider the possibility that it doesn't happen. Since Daya is taking so long to decide what to do, maybe she gets intercepted by someone else before she has a chance to make her decision. It would certainly be the lamest outcome, but it's not impossible.
One way or another, we'll have our answer when Orange Is the New Black returns on June 9.

The Sweet, Somber Significance of Princess Diana's Final Resting Place

Seven days after Princess Diana's tragic death in August 1997, she was honored with a public funeral that remains one of the most watched events in history. Millions of people crowded the streets of London to follow the route of Diana's coffin from Kensington Palace along Hyde Park to St. James's Palace, passing Buckingham Palace and observing her memory in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Later that day, Diana was taken to her final resting place at her childhood home, the Spencer estate in Althorp.

Though many attended her funeral, the Princess of Wales was buried privately; the only people present were a close friend, her mother and siblings, Prince Charles, William, Harry, and a clergyman. Diana wore a black dress by Catherine Walker and held on to a rosary given to her by Mother Teresa (who, sadly, died the same week as Diana). She was laid to rest on a small island in the middle of a lake at Althorp. The family estate is located about 70 miles from London in the town of Northampton, UK, and spans nearly 13,000 acres. Built in 1508, then-Lady Diana Spencer moved to the lavish home when her father, John Spencer, inherited the earl title in 1975. When he passed in 1992, Diana's brother Charles took the title as well as operation over the estate.

After her death, Earl Spencer decided that her gravesite was better off at Althorp than at their family vault in the local church, because it could be more easily cared for and, most importantly, offered better privacy for William and Harry to visit. Before his wedding to Kate Middleton in April 2011, William is said to have brought Kate to visit Diana's gravesite, where they reportedly laid flowers. The island where Diana's grave sits is accessed by a path of 36 trees - one for every year of her life - and black swans and white roses float in the water. It also holds a tall monument dedicated to the princess, as well as a temple for visitors to pay their respects. On either side of the template is a tablet; one is engraved with the tribute Prince Charles gave at her funeral, and the other has quotes from Diana about her love and commitment to charity work. In 2015, Earl Spencer and his wife, Karen, Countess Spencer, set forth a huge revamp of the property where Diana is buried - the first in 350 years. It is scheduled to be done just before the 20th anniversary of her death in August 2017.
Why Do the Most Inclusive TV Shows Get Canceled?
This week, Netflix did the unthinkable and canceled its cult hit show Sense8. A statement from VP of Original Content Cindy Holland said, "It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kickass and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world." And in this aspect, Holland would be right. Sense8 was and is arguably one of the most inclusive and diverse shows in TV history. It depicts a staggering variety of races, sexualities, and cultures.
To make matters worse, there's a sort of salt-in-the-wound effect here that has fans extra angry. The first season of the show dropped in June 2015, meaning its audience had to wait nearly two years to see how the story continues. Netflix announced the cancellation just a month after dropping the second season . . . on June 1. Which, as you may or may not know, is the first day of LGBTQ Pride Month. As one fan noted on Twitter, several of the show's narratives are currently only half-finished.
As much as we could harp on Sense8 for eight or so more paragraphs, the show isn't the only one to receive what seems to be a premature cancellation. Just last month, The Real O'Neals got the ax from ABC, thus eliminating another series with a gay main character. Furthermore, when you look over this season's other canceled shows, you realize it's not just about the LGBTQ community, it's also about shows that prominently feature people of color. Freshman series Pitch, with a black woman as the lead, didn't earn a second season. The Get Down, another Netflix darling, only got one season. Other diverse shows, like American Crime, Dr. Ken, and Rosewood, were all nipped as well. All of these shows made powerful strides toward inclusion in their own various ways, and they also all had something else in common: loyal, passionate fan bases that didn't want to see their shows go.
In the past few months, Pitch fans rallied behind the #KeepHerinTheGame campaign, and avid viewers of The Real O'Neals got in on a movement called #TheRealReason. The latter was met with an outpouring of tweets: fans revealed how the show had educated them and their families. LGBTQ youth expressed how much it meant to have someone they could relate to on mainstream TV. When it comes to Pitch, it wasn't just about impassioned fans. The show premiered with stellar reviews in the Fall. So, why the hell are we still losing these shows?!
It boils down to numbers. When it comes to the cancellations of Pitch and The Real O'Neals, it's all about viewership. In January, Fox CEO and Chairman Gary Newman said the network was very happy with Pitch, but they "would've loved to see a bigger audience." Ratings from The Real O'Neals hovered around three million in season two, making it ABC's lowest-performing comedy.
Truth be told, Netflix doesn't typically share that kind of data and didn't cite it as a reason for cancellation, but it's a safe bet something similar was at play. After all, Netflix is notorious for canceling very few of its original series. The Get Down and Sense8 are among the first. It just goes to show: you can have an exceptional show with noted critical acclaim, and that still won't be enough. These networks want money.
That's the real tragedy here, and that's why it's so upsetting. Each of these three shows did something magnificent for the LGBTQ community and minorities. They were diverse and inclusive. As groups of people who are constantly erased in mainstream media, who struggle every year to get their stories on TV and in movies, shows like The Real O'Neals, The Get Down, Sense8, and Pitch really, really matter. Doesn't this kind of representation, excitement, enthusiasm, and positive feedback mean more to a network than revenue?
The real bullsh*t is that these underrepresented communities will always be the minority population in the United States. We're a smaller group of individuals, so even when we're all excited about something, we just can't make the same impact as a wider audience. And yet, we'll always be held to the same standard. We'll always be expected to deliver the same kinds of ratings as a show like The Big Bang Theory.
Netflix, with its generosity and openness and willingness to give niche audiences a chance, seemed like the media champion of content for marginalized individuals of our society. It never seemed like numbers mattered all that much, as long as they were making a stunning impact. But now that Sense8 and The Get Down are gone, we're not sure.

Coldplay Performs "Fix You" at the Manchester Concert and Brings Everyone to Tears

Ariana Grande promised to return to Manchester for a star-studded benefit concert after a terrorist attack killed 22 people and injured 119 at her May 22 tour stop, and the event was an unbelievable success. Not only did the British Red Cross raise over three million dollars, but all of the performances were showstoppers. Once Grande knocked it out of the park with her own set, Coldplay took the stage to sing their emotional ballad, "Fix You." People in the audience sang along through tears, and some formed a big heart with police and security. It was clearly one of the most moving, cathartic moments of the night.

15 Things My Depression Would Definitely Text Me, If It Could
For those suffering from depression, it can often feel like nothing will ever get better and nobody will ever understand. My personal bouts consist of oversleeping, undereating, shutting down at inappropriate times, disconnecting or isolating myself from the people I care about in an effort "not to burden them," and generally being a challenging person to deal with and get through to.
I think about all the ways depression (and its sh*tty second cousin, anxiety) have made a home in me; like a devil on either shoulder, telling me I don't deserve the things I want, the people I love don't love me back, and the roads to healthy relationships and self-confidence will always be closed for construction. But one of the things I can bring to my decades-long odyssey with mental illness (besides, you know, medication and therapy) is a wry, malapropos sense of humor - because sometimes, it really does seem like there is nothing else. That being said, here are some text messages I just know I'd get from my depression if it could fit its grubby little hands around a cell phone (and if I actually gave it my number).
- It's honestly so crazy to me that you have friends. Isn't that crazy to you?
- You realize nobody like, actually likes you, right? Try looking up "tolerate" in the dictionary, hun.
- They "just want you to be happy?" LOL, you don't really believe that, do you?
- Yeah, that dude is WAY out of your league. Cute that you thought he'd be into you, though.
- Don't you think you're being a little too . . . I dunno . . . happy right now? Snap out of it, girl. It's not always about you!
- Isn't Pinterest so inspiring? It's like, all the things you'll never have and don't deserve, but in one handy place. You should check it multiple times a day!
- You really are better off just keeping your head down, getting your work done, and going home. Nobody will notice because nobody cares!
- You really are better off just saying you're tired, turning down the invite, and staying home. Nobody will notice because nobody cares!
- Wait, you tried to explain our relationship to someone?! I bet you cried! Way to go. Have fun looking insane.
- OMG, my vacay was amazing. Looks like you had a fun couple of weeks without me but I'm so glad to be back - aren't you so glad I'm back?
- Did that doctor just call me "severe?" Way harsh, Tai.
- Hey, we have that 11 hours of sleep that we really need to get to. So what the sun's still out? Seems like the sun's problem.
- Um, Anxiety just told me you were awake half the night thinking about how f*cked up your life is and didn't get the 11 hours of sleep we need to function. Care to explain?
- Wait, who told you your life was f*cked up? Not me, I hope.
- Dude, you're so dramatic. You'll be fiiiine. When have I ever lied to you?
Theory Alert! Could Ser Davos Actually Be the Secret Hero on Game of Thrones?
Caution: the following contains spoilers pertaining to Game of Thrones season six!
Between seasons of Game of Thrones, we've obsessed over theories predicting the secret savior of Westeros. Could it be Jon Snow - nay, Jon Targaryen - who might unite the Seven Kingdoms and defeat the White Walkers? Or might it be his fiery aunt, Daenerys? Hell, it might even be Sansa or Arya Stark, according to the theories we consume so ferociously to fill the void. But all this time, we've been overlooking some serious foreshadowing about one unexpected character: lovable Ser Davos Seaworth, the Onion Knight.
According to an utterly convincing Reddit theory by Redditor FollowTheBeard, Davos may be Azor Ahai, or the "Prince That Was Promised." We know, crazy, right? After spending six seasons supporting another man (Stannis) who claimed to be Azor Ahai, it seems wild that it may have been Davos himself all along who can fulfill this ancient prophecy. But hear us out; the Easter eggs that have been strewn throughout the series, when combined, make an excellent argument for Seaworth as the Prince That Was Promised.
The Theory:
In typical Reddit fashion, FollowTheBeard's full theory begins with a succinct explanation for skimmers: "TL;DR: Davos drew Lightbringer from the fire. Davos was reborn amidst salt and smoke under a bleeding star. Davos resurrected Jon Snow and woke the dragon from stone. Davos is the savior that will protect the world from darkness. Davos is the Prince that was Promised."
"Davos is the savior that will protect the world from darkness. Davos is the Prince that was Promised."
Each of these moments, wherein Davos merely blends into the background, not focusing on his own exceptional qualities in favor of serving a greater good, add up to foretell the Onion Knight as an unexpected savior.
First, explains the internet theorist, is Davos's early encounter with a flaming sword. At the beginning of season two, Melisandre proclaims: "In the ancient books it is written that a Warrior will draw a burning sword from the fire, and that sword shall be Lightbringer. Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Light, your sword awaits you." While Stannis ceremoniously withdraws a sword from the flames, Davos observes from the background; after the pomp and circumstance ceases, the knight walks over and picks up the formerly flaming sword himself, casually walking away with it.
The next piece of evidence is part of the prophecy, which predicts that "When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt." Now, recall the conclusion of season two, when Davos and his navy are bombarded by Tyrion's Wildfire in the Battle of the Blackwater. The entire fleet is destroyed, and most of Stannis's soldiers perished in the battle . . . most, except Ser Davos. FollowTheBeard goes on to explain:
"Water is used pervasively in literature as a metaphoric mechanism of cleansing and rebirth. Fire is also widely used as a symbol for rebirth, renewed life, burning away corruption, etc. Davos 'comes back to life' in the Season 3 premiere as he wakes up on an island, rescued by Salladhor Saan, who even says:
'You've only just come back to life. Stay alive a little longer, my friend.'
Thus, Davos is reborn amidst smoke (wildfire) and salt (seawater). The metaphorical implications of Davos's rebirth can be thoroughly examined, but that's for another post."
Finally, Azor Ahai is foretold "to wake dragons from the stone." While Davos certainly hasn't interacted with any massive reptilian beasts a là Daenerys, he was in the room when Jon Snow (who we now know is a Targaryen) was resurrected atop a stone slab. According to this theory, it was no coincidence that Davos was the only one present when Jon awoke from death:
"During the resurrection scene, Jon Snow is laid out on a stone slab. Melisandre performs the ritual and . . . nothing happens. Tormund leaves, Melisandre leaves, Edd leaves. Only Davos stays. He lingers, as seen from this clip here. He approaches Jon, internally begging, pleading, willing, praying for his return. Shortly after, Jon gasps his first breath.
The delay between the ritual and first breath was not a dramatic pause. Melisandre did not resurrect Jon Snow. She never believed she could, nor did she have any faith left in the cause. Davos did. Davos, not Melisandre, brought Jon Snow back to life. Davos woke the dragon from stone."
These three pieces of evidence, along with Ser Davos actor Liam Cunningham's cryptic hints about knowing a secret straight from George R. R. Martin himself, are quite convincing. We'll definitely be playing close attention during season seven for more indicators that Davos is actually intended to save Westeros, not just serve it.
Not bad for a former smuggler who recently learned how to read, eh?

Not Kidding: The Best Thing I Got in the Mail This Week Was Banana Pudding
The best thing that I received in the mail this week was a few tubs of pudding. No, I'm not kidding, and yes, I ate all of it. (With a little help, of course!) You see, Magnolia Bakery is now offering its famous banana pudding for delivery nationwide, so naturally I had to try it.
Does it stack up against a cup of the fresh pudding from Magnolia's NYC locations? Well, take a look at the reviews from a handful of POPSUGAR editors, more than one of whom actually squealed with delight.
- "Best. Ever."
- "I don't even usually like pudding, but this is incredible!"
- "Simply divine."
- "Yummm! I am not a banana pudding person but wow!"
- "My mouth hath been blessed by an angel."
- "Not even a fan of pudding, but love this!"
- "FIRE."
Unsurprisingly, we gave this delivery dessert full marks.
You can order your own through the Magnolia Bakery website, with each order of six large cups running for $48. It's enough to feed 10 to 12 people - or 20-plus hungry editors if you happen to be in the POPSUGAR newsroom - so it's a great option for special events (or serious cravings). But take it from a pro: be sure to snag an entire one of the tubs for yourself before sharing, because you'll want to devour it all.
Why This Mom Is Warning Parents to Check Their Kids' Sandals This Summer
For her birthday, a 2-year-old girl got a present that left her writhing in agony: a pair of seemingly innocuous shoes.
After receiving a pair of brand-new Next pink jelly sandals – which retail for approximately $12 at the England-based retailer – young Esmé Connor suffered deep incisions to her right ankle. Shockingly, she'd only been wearing them for close to 30 minutes.
"It's not like she was running around in them for hours," the girl's mom, Lisa Connor, told Daily Mail. "She was just plodding around the house and then came running in in tears. There was blood all round her ankle and on the soles of her foot. Of course there will be new shoes that rub, but this is ridiculous."
The photos, shared via Facebook, show just how damaging the sandals were to the girl. Lisa's goal in posting the shocking images on social media is to warn other parents about the brand. She's also called on the retailer to recall the product.
According to Lisa, Next's customer service department has agreed to collect and examine the shoes – which are currently listed on the site as "fun jelly sandals for short term wear only" – this week.
The most upsetting aspect of this injury, Lisa said, was that because her daughter can't say many words yet, she wasn't able to communicate her pain to her parents.
"She was moaning and whining, and I initially put it down to being tired," Lisa recalled before discovering the true root of her pain. "There was so much blood. Her dad had to spend an hour calming her down. It ruined her birthday weekend really."
A Theme Park Enthusiast Crammed Your Entire Summer Into 1 Day
For most, a trip to Disneyland is a fun weekend getaway. For me, it's practically my office. As a theme park journalist, I regularly tour land expansions, try inventive park cuisine, and experience new thrill rides before they're open to the public. I love what I do, and it's a joy, but you can imagine my surprise when Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Universal Orlando Resort all unveiled their big Memorial Day Weekend openings on the exact same day.
What is a ride-obsessed reporter to do when she has to be three places at once? Crisscross the country in the span of 24 hours, of course, flying between Florida and California to see, experience, and eat everything on both coasts that's coming your way at Disney and Universal this Summer.
I walked through Pandora - The World of Avatar, a newly themed land that pays homage to James Cameron's blockbuster film, at night; awoke to witness the grand opening of Volcano Bay water theme park at Universal Orlando Resort; and hopped a plane to Anaheim to ride Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! at Disney's California Adventure.
It was crazy and exciting and obviously tiring, but hey, it's not often you get to fly a banshee, stand at the foot of a volcano, and wave hello to Groot in a span of 24 hours.
Thankfully, everything is now officially open, so you can take your time experiencing these parks IRL. (Phew!) But until you make it there, here's what experiencing a Summer's worth of thrills in a single day was really like.
