14 Route 66 Attractions to See on Your Next Road Trip

Ready to have a good ol' fashioned road trip? Consider your travels planned with this excerpt from Drew Knowles's Route 66 Adventure Handbook, featuring quirky roadside attractions and facts you won't want to miss.

America's iconic highway is still alive and definitely worth incorporating into your Summer travels. You can't call it a real road trip if you don't get your kicks on Route 66, right?

Born out of need after automobiles became mass produced in the US, Route 66 was built in 1926 as part of the numbered federal highway system we know today. It then boomed as a popular highway when John Steinbeck referred to it in his famous novel, The Grapes of Wrath. Dotted along "the Mother Road," as Steinbeck would say, are both bizarre and intriguing attractions that will make your drive one to remember. Some of them are so strange you won't believe they exist, and all of them promise some great photos. Buckle your seat belts because we're taking you from Illinois to California.

Backpacking Into Yosemite's Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne - See the Stunning Photos

Yosemite's landscape is spectacular, breathtaking, and magical. I've visited Yosemite before, but on a recent trip there, I wanted to do something more challenging this time, so backpacking into the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne it was! It's approximately a 34-mile hike, depending on where you decide to start. I encountered some difficulties along the way (that I probably should have known better to avoid), but it will only help me prepare better for my next backpacking trip - and there will be a next one! Here's what backpacking Yosemite's Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne is like and some tips for your own adventure there.

15 Things Depression Will Tell You That Are Actually Horrible Lies

For those suffering from depression, it can often feel like nothing will ever get better and nobody will ever understand. My personal bouts consist of oversleeping, undereating, shutting down at inappropriate times, disconnecting or isolating myself from the people I care about in an effort "not to burden them," and generally being a challenging person to deal with and get through to.

I think about all the ways depression (and its sh*tty second cousin, anxiety) have made a home in me; like a devil on either shoulder, telling me I don't deserve the things I want, the people I love don't love me back, and the roads to healthy relationships and self-confidence will always be closed for construction. But one of the things I can bring to my decades-long odyssey with mental illness (besides, you know, medication and therapy) is a wry, malapropos sense of humor - because sometimes, it really does seem like there is nothing else. That being said, here are some text messages I just know I'd get from my depression if it could fit its grubby little hands around a cell phone (and if I actually gave it my number).

  1. It's honestly so crazy to me that you have friends. Isn't that crazy to you?
  2. You realize nobody like, actually likes you, right? Try looking up "tolerate" in the dictionary, hun.
  3. They "just want you to be happy?" LOL, you don't really believe that, do you?
  4. Yeah, that dude is WAY out of your league. Cute that you thought he'd be into you, though.
  5. Don't you think you're being a little too . . . I dunno . . . happy right now? Snap out of it, girl. It's not always about you!
  6. Isn't Pinterest so inspiring? It's like, all the things you'll never have and don't deserve, but in one handy place. You should check it multiple times a day!
  7. You really are better off just keeping your head down, getting your work done, and going home. Nobody will notice because nobody cares!
  8. You really are better off just saying you're tired, turning down the invite, and staying home. Nobody will notice because nobody cares!
  9. Wait, you tried to explain our relationship to someone?! I bet you cried! Way to go. Have fun looking insane.
  10. OMG, my vacay was amazing. Looks like you had a fun couple of weeks without me but I'm so glad to be back - aren't you so glad I'm back?
  11. Did that doctor just call me "severe?" Way harsh, Tai.
  12. Hey, we have that 11 hours of sleep that we really need to get to. So what the sun's still out? Seems like the sun's problem.
  13. Um, Anxiety just told me you were awake half the night thinking about how f*cked up your life is and didn't get the 11 hours of sleep we need to function. Care to explain?
  14. Wait, who told you your life was f*cked up? Not me, I hope.
  15. Dude, you're so dramatic. You'll be fiiiine. When have I ever lied to you?

The Horrifying Memes That Forced Harvard to Revoke Several Acceptance Offers

Harvard College (part of Harvard University) revoked acceptance offers for a group of prospective undergraduate students after a lewd messaging group was discovered. According to The Harvard Crimson, about 10 students were found responsible for creating and participating in a Facebook messaging group titled "Harvard memes for horny bourgeois teens."

As the group began to grow in membership, administrators became aware of its existence in the Spring. That's when they contacted members of the group and asked them to show them the content that had been previously shared; what they found was deeply concerning.

According to incoming freshman Jessica Zhang, collegiate messaging groups like these tend to be much more lighthearted. "A lot of students were excited about forming group chats with people who shared similar interests." Zhang then joined the troublesome subgroup after "someone posted about starting a chat for people who liked memes."

In that group, the content was much darker. It's been reported that many of the memes shared in the group touched on sexual assault, child abuse, and the Holocaust. A particularly horrifying meme referred to the hanging of a Mexican child as "piñata time."

Many of the active participants in the group received a letter from the admissions office advising them that their statuses were under review. The letter read, "The Admissions Committee was disappointed to learn that several students in a private group chat for the Class of 2021 were sending messages that contained offensive messages and graphics . . . We are asking that you submit a statement by tomorrow at noon to explain your contributions and actions for discussion with the Admissions Committee."

Members of the group who did not participate or share memes did not receive the letter. Among them is Zhang, who said she understands the administration's decision. "I appreciate humor, but there are so many topics that just should not be joked about. I respect the decision of the admissions officers to rescind the offers because those actions really spoke about the students' true characters," she said. "I do not know how those offensive images could be defended."

Prince Charles Actually Met Princess Diana While He Was Dating Her Sister

Princess Diana and Prince Charles tied the knot in July 1981 after a whirlwind courtship (seriously, they only went on 12 dates). Despite separating in 1992 and Diana's untimely death in 1997, their romance has continued to fascinate people. Their entire involvement was quite dramatic, including the way they got together in the first place. The mom of Prince Harry and Prince William first met Charles in 1977 while he was dating her older sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale (weird, right?). It wasn't until the Summer of 1980 that Charles, who had already called it quits with Sarah, really became interested in Diana. During a weekend getaway with friends in the English countryside, Diana watched the prince play polo and the two struck up a romance from there.

They went on to get engaged in February 1981, but things were far from perfect. Both Charles and Diana had extramarital affairs and Diana suffered from an eating disorder, attempted to take her own life on numerous occasions, and developed a strained relationship with Charles's mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Things finally ended for good when the queen ordered them to get a divorce in 1995.

3 Ways This Facebook Chatbot Is More Appealing Than Traditional Therapy

Image Source: StockSnap / Mikayla Mallek

Even though about one in five adults in the US suffers from mental health issues each year, only 40 percent of them actually received help in 2015. And though approximately half of the student population on college campuses around the US report symptoms of depression and anxiety so severe it affects their ability to function, 75 percent who need them do not access clinical services. Factors such as cost, time, and stigma surrounding mental health are just a few that can prevent somebody from getting the treatment they need. But now, thanks to Woebot, a Facebook messenger chatbot, anybody can have unlimited access to an artificially intelligent personal therapist.

Dr. Alison Darcy, clinical psychologist and lecturer at Stanford and CEO of Woebot, experienced conversational agents during her time at Stanford's AI lab. It dawned on her that what were ultimately basic chatbots could serve a greater purpose in terms of therapy. "I realized actually this could be really valuable because not only does the conversation look like really conventional, traditional therapy, but it's not a human," she told us. The tech-based treatment, which is based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), was then tested by students on campus, and the feedback was positive, to say the least.

I was able to test out Woebot for myself, and I was surprised at how seamless the experience was. To speak to Woebot, simply search for his name on Facebook as you would for a person or page, and message him directly. His response is immediate, and he will first introduce himself and what he does. Woebot also makes it very clear from the start that though he is there to help you improve mood and "crush self-defeating thinking styles," he should not be used as a replacement for getting help.

As Woebot gets a better understanding of what your current mood is, you're able to reply freely about your issues as well as respond via buttons when prompted.

In addition to being empathetic, friendly, and conversational, here are three other reasons Woebot may be a beneficial alternate to traditional therapy for some.

1. It's anonymous.

Even though the topic of mental health has become more widely discussed, we still have a ways to go in terms of destigmatizing it. Young adults especially are afraid to be labeled as "crazy" and would rather continue suffering alone than feel embarrassed about seeking help. "The fear of being judged," as Darcy explained it, is completely eliminated with Woebot. He doesn't see your Facebook page, your friends won't know you're speaking to him, and there isn't a human behind Woebot - all in the hopes that users feel more comfortable openly communicating about their problems.

"Woebot has the advantage of being not human; people won't be afraid of burdening him at any time, they know he doesn't sleep," Darcy said. "I think they feel OK about sharing things because there's nobody really behind it and they can be a bit more candid and open, and it removes that fear in the moment of sharing, which could be a lot of noise that distracts what you're trying to say or think about."

2. He's accessible to everyone.

The only requirement of chatting with Woebot is having a Facebook account to reach him on Messenger. Other than that, "sessions" with him are completely free and available 24/7. Not only does this eliminate the need to make an appointment with a therapist, but it also allows you to tackle any problems as soon as they arise. This also makes CBT more effective since a large part of its success or failure depends on whether the patient has done his or her homework.

"We know this from education literature that it's actually better to learn in small chunks on a daily basis than it is in one hour-long chunk in one specific place and time," Darcy said. "Also, that learning is better when it's embedded in your everyday life than trying to learn it again."

The kind of "homework" therapists typically assign include mood tracking or food diaries for those struggling with eating disorders, for example. But oftentimes, it's laborious and biased from memory because not everyone remembers to complete it or procrastinates on their responses. "I think Woebot does a really good job of integrating that data collection sort of homework into someone's everyday life," she said. "It's also really valid information because they're checking in at random times or in the moment that they're feeling something."

3. It works.

Woebot proved to significantly reduce symptoms of depression in just two weeks, versus the four to five weeks it typically takes traditional therapy to show response to treatment. Dr. Darcy first tested it out with 70 students (ages 18 to 28) who reported symptoms of anxiety and depression. One group spent two weeks with Woebot, while the information-only control group worked with an ebook developed by the National Institute of Mental Health. Not only did they find that the students in the first group were chatting with Woebot every single day, but they also noticed dramatic changes in the students' depression after the study period.

One of the reasons participants who engaged with Woebot saw better results was because of its availability. Face-to-face therapy is usually scheduled for one hour, once a week, whereas you can chat with Woebot whenever you'd like. He also checks in with you daily for about five minutes and provides you updates about your mood each week. He helps facilitate the process rather than being a part of it, as any good therapist would do. Being trained in CBT, Woebot provides different tools such as curated videos and word games to teach the user instead of imposing certain treatments. It's always up to you whether you'd like to proceed or not. Here's a breathing exercise he would talk you through, for example.

During a conversation when someone is feeling panicked, Woebot will suggest identifying any distortions in their thinking. "He'll talk somebody through that process, and help them reframe those thoughts and really stick with them until they've come to the other end of that process," Darcy said. "And that normally takes a full session a lot of the time; this is quite quick, I would say."

Of course, Woebot isn't an alternative to therapy for those with urgent mental health issues but rather another option for those exploring ways to improve their mental health to try. Woebot will always offer the 911 number (or 112 in Europe) in case of emergencies. If he detects that you're in crisis or you say "SOS," he will first ask you to confirm and then send you resources such as an evidence-based app that's shown to reduce suicidal behavior. If that's not enough, he will explain that it's something beyond his capabilities and suggest reaching out to someone who can further help.

Woebot officially launched on June 6 and is available to try out for yourself!

3 New Features Coming to Live Photos That Actually Make It Useful

Two years ago, Apple announced Live Photos, and it made capturing memories a little more interesting (and gave everything a Harry Potter vibe). But the feature was due for an update, and it finally received one at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference. In the new iOS 11, Live Photos is getting three new effects and more editing power.

Live Photos will now have the following new effects: loops, bounce, and long exposure. Loop will turn your Live Photo in a GIF; bounce makes a photo move back and forth (similar to Instagram's Boomerang app); and long exposure gives a photo with moving parts like a waterfall a blurry or smooth effect. Ahead, you can see what the loop and bounce effect look like, left to right.

Along with these effects, iOS 11 will also let you edit, mute, and pick the thumbnail for live photos. iOS 11 will be available as a free update this Fall.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, Goofballs at Heart, Drop Everything and Do Karate

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner make one adorably goofy match. The couple, who first sparked dating rumors last November, put their sweet bond on full display during their recent day date in LA on Monday. Accompanied by Joe's DNCE band member Cole Whittle, the pair had a little fun with the cameras as they showed off their best karate moves. While the bassist donned his traditional loud prints, Joe and Sophie matched in dark-wash jeans, black tees, and circular sunglasses. The couple have had no problem showing PDA in front of the cameras recently. Aside from cuddling up on the beach in Mexico, Sophie revealed a very important fact about her beau by writing "Joe gives me da good good" on her hand. Yep, we definitely can't get enough of their wacky love.

We Need to Talk About Disneyland's Magical Doughnut Selection, Y'all

If your doughnut doesn't inspire exclamations of envy from random passersby, is it really worth it? (Probably, because doughnuts are the freakin' best, but that doesn't serve to illustrate our point.) Thankfully, the fried, doughy rings of goodness at Disneyland are the best of the best. It wasn't until quite recently that Disney started offering doughnuts for hungry guests, but the addition to the resort's snack selection was an instant hit. As it turns out, nobody does doughnuts quite like the happiest place on earth!

You can find Disney doughnuts at several locations throughout the California resort: the Coffee Cart near Fantasy Faire on Disneyland's Main Street, Schmoozies in Disney's California Adventure, and the Disneyland Hotel Coffee Shop. Most items in Disney's impressive doughnut selection run about $6 per pop, but based on photos from contented park guests, they definitely seem worth the cost!

When we say Disneyland has every doughnut imaginable, we're talking everything from maple-bacon bars and Reese's peanut butter doughnuts to tropical fruit flavors topped with mini umbrellas. Don't believe us? Just check out these awe-inspiring confections found throughout the Disney parks. And yes, you have permission to drool.

10 Feminist Poets Who Will Leave You Stronger Than Before

If you're at all skeptical of your ability to enjoy poetry, I don't blame you. I know I used to be. It's hard not to equate poetry with tough days at school analyzing poems about things that have seemingly nothing to do with us, written by people who died centuries ago and wrote in languages that feel totally foreign. It's a shame how this is often our first impression of poetry. Oh, the ways we could have been healing all this time had we not been so afraid of it.

Because that's what poetry does. It heals. And there is a whole world of contemporary poets out there, putting into words we can understand all the things we've been feeling. Today, poetry is being challenged and subverted by young and achingly feminist voices, here to light a fire in our souls. I'm so glad I gave poetry a chance when I did. The woman I was before I discovered my love for poetry is strikingly different from the woman I am now. She was so much more confused, insecure, and unaware of her power. It's all poetry's fault that I've begun to learn how to hone in on my own strength, especially poetry written by the 10 poets listed here. They have each taught me something only they could have taught me. They have each healed me with their own particular brand of healing. Here is my tribute to them.

I Rubbed Snail Goo on My Face and It Obliterated My Acne

Image Source: StockSnap / Sajjad Ghanavati

Some partners call their lovers "bae" or "boo." But my boyfriend? He calls me "Snail Face."

Technically, he's correct. Twice a day, every day, I rub a tablespoon of snail mucin - also called snail secretion filtrate - over my face and neck. Even though it tastes bitter - my boyfriend learned this first-hand by trying to kiss me on the cheek - it's the only thing that has worked to clear up my adult-onset acne.

I wasn't a pimply teenager and never had problems with it until I hit my early 20s. Suddenly, I was forming blackheads seemingly overnight, and I had a particularly difficult time battling zits on my cheeks. I had every kind of pimple you could imagine: stubborn whiteheads, deeply embedded pustules, pus volcanos, and fiery-red bumps.

Though I'd been using a Cetaphil face wash for years with positive results, it obviously was no longer working. I turned to other tactics, and over the course of the next five years, I tried a number of zany and not-so-zany treatments. I used Proactive, which worked relatively well, except for the fact that it dried my skin out. I saw multiple dermatologists who recommended myriad ointments, like Differin and Tazorac, as well as prescription antibiotics, all of which I dutifully used, to no avail. Facials became a monthly ritual, and I tried everything from intense extractions to LED Blue light treatments and glycolic-retinol masks.

After meeting a woman who claimed using oils on her face rid her of acne, I did the same, rubbing coconut, avocado, and rose hip oils all over my face. (Note: This tactic didn't work and only made me more pimple-y.) Somehow 3 percent hydrogen peroxide got added into the mix, and I started swiping that on my skin after washing. It worked well in preventing breakouts, but it bleached my eyebrows blonde, which wasn't a good look. I swapped the hydrogen peroxide for apple cider vinegar, which also made an impact, but it was too smelly.

I also experimented with my makeup, switching to pore-friendly brands like Bare Minerals, Origins, and Cover FX, and taking days off from wearing products at all. I started using primers and washing my brushes obsessively. I even stopped using a washcloth to clean my face, opting instead for konjac sponges and paper towels to dry my skin.

While some of these treatments worked, none solved my acne problems entirely. Maybe my skin would be clear, but my nose would be peeling or still full of blackheads. I'd still get breakouts every now and then, and I had a few pores that were hell-bent on getting clogged and flaring up on a regular basis.

Fast-forward to today, and getting acne is but a distant memory. My trick: I started using snail mucin. At this point, I was willing to try anything to get rid of my pimples, so even though using a product made out of snail slime sounded a bit gross to me, I was game. I first learned about it through the Korean beauty website, Soko Glam, but I didn't take the plunge and buy any snail products until my facialist recommended one to me by the skincare brand Biopelle.

The first two topicals I tried were Biopelle's Tensage Daily Serum ($125) and Cosrx's Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence ($21). After cleansing and washing my face, I applied both creams to my dry skin in lieu of lotion. They differ in texture, color, and feel.

The Tensage Serum is thick and white, and leaves your skin feeling slightly tingly, while the Advanced Snail Mucin is clear, sticky, and hydrating. Within a week, my skin was almost entirely clear of pimples, and now, after a using snail mucin for a year, I feel confident enough to go out in public without foundation on.

The funny thing is snail mucin isn't even intended to treat acne.

Made of hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein enzymes, antimicrobial and copper peptides, and proteoglycans, it's marketed as an anti-aging tool that helps diminish fine lines, reduce inflammation, and increase fibroblasts and collagen. The fact that it reduces pimples, is just a lucky addition.

Snail mucin is also not cruelly obtained. There is no one way to collect it. Different companies use diverse methods, as well as different species of snails. And the snails aren't killed or injured in the process.

Biopelle uses a species of snail native to the Mediterranean called Cryptomphalus aspersa, and the secretion is collected through stimulation. Several hundred snails are put into a five-gallon bucket and they're lightly swung around for a few rotations. This activity agitates the snails, who release the secretion. Biopelle president Elliott Milstein said this secretion is different from the mucin they produce for mobility.

"It's not like you can just put a snail directly on your face and have it move around to get those results," Milstein said. He explained that the secretion produced by the snail's movement does not contain the glycolic proteins and growth factors that the secretion acquired through agitation has.

After going through a few swings in the bucket, Biopelle's snails then get to rest for a couple of weeks in "a sanctuary," where they basically get to eat and have a lot of sex. Biopelle collects their eggs and uses them in its Tensage Stem Cell line, which helps produce new skin cells that can reduce signs of aging. The snails get a break in the Fall and Winter and are taken to a swamp in northern Spain to hibernate. According to Milstein, the average lifespan of their snails is twice that of snails living in the wild, which translates to about eight years instead of four.

The snail mucin used in the products Soko Glam sells is acquired differently, and most of the companies they work with are based in Asia.

According to Charlotte Cho, Soko Glam's cofounder, the snails are placed over a mesh net in a dark and quiet room and left to slither about for a good half-hour before their trail of mucin is collected. Unlike Biopelle's snails, the snails used to create Soko Glam's products do not get agitated or stressed because Cho said, "optimal mucin production occurs when snails are well rested and comfortable in their habitat.

There are different theories about how the healing qualities of snail mucin were discovered. Cho explained that Chilean farmers were the first to recognize snails' beneficial traits. "They noticed that their hands were visibly smoother and their cuts were healing quickly after handling snails," she said.

Milstein had another take. He said that radiologists discovered the mucin's healing effects after subjecting snails to x-rays and noticing that the substance they secreted helped heal their burns.

Snail mucin still has a ways to go before it catches on in mainstream formulas and loses its "ew" factor, but there are a fair amount of products on the market already. Quality varies, and Milstein warned that there are some companies that "actually just grind up the snail and don't use the extract." In other words, if a 12-ounce jar of snail mucin for $5 seems too good to be true, it probably is. While snail products aren't as expensive as, say, a La Mer cream, you've got to remember that you're paying for something that takes a lot of time (and a lot of snails) to make. But generally snail products cost anywhere between $20 and $200.

By now, I've recommended snail mucin to many friends and family, and of those who have been brave enough to try it, I've only heard positive results. Sure, it might deter your partner from kissing you on the cheek, but who cares? Your skin will look fantastic.

When You Find This Trader Joe's Ice Cream Sandwich, Buy 15 Boxes

I would like to take a moment to personally thank Trader Joe's for introducing Brownie Crisp Coffee Ice Cream Sandwiches into my life. By far the best new Trader Joe's item of June 2017 (so far), this is everything my coffee- and ice-cream-loving soul could ask for. Available in the frozen aisle for $4 per box of four, this is the new Trader Joe's product you shouldn't leave the store without. OK, plus the white cheddar popcorn, but that's another story.

The square-shaped ice cream sandwiches have coffee ice cream flecked with finely ground espresso beans sandwiched between two thin brownie crisps that are studded with chocolate chips and chocolate chunks. If that sounds like a mouthful, it is - in the best way. Just bitter enough from the espresso flavor and plenty sweet enough from the brownie and chocolate, each sandwich satisfies all your cravings for something cool and creamy (and it just might give you a caffeine boost, too).

People who live in New York are lucky enough to have Dominique Ansel's cold brew soft serve for their coffee-meets-ice-cream fix this Summer. But the rest of us will have to run by Trader Joe's instead, which we're not complaining about one bit. When you spot this heaven-sent dessert the next time you're browsing Trader Joe's frozen section, do yourself (and your roommates) a favor and buy as many boxes as possible to stash in your freezer. Just don't blame me if they steal them all.

The Right Way to Scramble Eggs

Scrambled eggs are something everyone knows how to cook, right? It's one of the first things I remember making. However, it wasn't until culinary school that I learned of a far superior way of whisking and scrambling the eggs - and get this, it's so easy. All you need to begin are eggs, a bowl, a fork, a nonstick pan, ghee, and a rubber spatula. Now let's get cracking.

If avocado toast isn't in your weekly routine, this list of recipes will convince you otherwise. Though nothing beats the classic toast (with salt and pepper or a dash of hot sauce), you'll quickly be ready to graduate onto other more complex toasts, including those topped with poached eggs, ahi tuna, and even gorgonzola cheese.

Don't Panic! You CAN Recover From These 5 Major Financial Mistakes

It's an easy thing to do: blow your entire month's budget on a major splurge, miss a credit card payment, or get into a little (big) thing that I like to call "The D Word" - Debt. No matter how carefully you manage your finances, you're bound to make some mistakes - and maybe some big ones at that.

I know because I've been there. It wasn't until I had graduated from college and landed my dream job at CNN that I got my first credit card. I know, I know . . . I was a bit behind the times. But I was raised in an immigrant family, where cash was queen and debt was just not OK. I made the move to Atlanta to start my new job, and suddenly there were all of these things that I thought I needed - or at least thought that I deserved. A new on-air wardrobe felt like a must (I was worth it, right?) as well as furniture and decor for my new apartment. After all, I had to be able to entertain all of my new friends in style!

The trouble was, I hadn't experienced the perils of interest before, and by that first holiday season, not only was I broke - I owed $5,000 on my credit card. Ouch. Those $25, $50, $100 purchases made here and there had snowballed into $100, $200, $500 with interest, faster than I ever would have imagined possible. Finding myself in debt for the first time in my life kept me up at night, and I resolved to start the new year afresh and debt-free, or at least, on my way to becoming debt free.

Remain calm, and, whatever you do, don't let one mistake cause your entire financial picture to spiral out of control. With some sweat equity and a few slices of humble pie you can bounce back! Here's how:

Mistake: You missed a credit card payment.

Solution: A recent report straight from the FICO people said that a 30-day late payment would reduce a FICO score of 680 by 60 to 80 points; the same 30-day late payment would reduce a FICO score of 780 by 90 to 110 points. Wait, what's your FICO score?? It's a major part of your credit score that lenders use to assess whether or not to give you a loan. In the case of the above late-payment scenarios: ouch. So where do you start? Suck it up, pick up the phone, and call your credit card company. Explain to them that this is a one-time mistake, and, if possible, tell them what happened. Did you forget to tell them that you moved, and the bill went to the wrong address? Did you recently lose your job? Make sure to get across that you are a loyal customer and plan to use them in the future. You'd be surprised by how far a little humble pie can go: you might keep them from reporting your late payment to a credit agency, and they might also help in removing any fees or other changes that might have been placed on your account.

Mistake: You splurged.

Solution: There's nothing wrong with a little treat now and then - even a big treat, in the event of a bonus or major promotion at work - but keep it up and those treats can add up to a costly shopping habit. It might sound like an oxymoron, but give yourself a "splurge budget": allow yourself five to 10 percent of your paycheck to spend on whatever you want, no questions asked. A little built-in treat will keep you on track while ensuring that the majority of your paycheck goes where it ought to: to living expenses and savings. Already done some damage and can't return it? Wait for the same item to go on sale, and then see if the store will allow you to "repurchase" it for the sale price.

Mistake: You bombed your credit score.

Solution: It's a common problem: it's not so much that you intentionally sabotaged your credit score, as you simply neglected to keep track of it. The good news is that you can recover, but that starts with giving your credit score a little love. It might sound counterintuitive, but now is the time to get a credit card if you don't already have one. Apply regular payments to this card - your utility bill, for example, or gym membership - to make sure that it remains active but doesn't go over its limit (a good rule of thumb is to keep expenses to 30 percent or less of the card's max). To get the most bang for your buck (er, plastic) look for a card that reports to all three credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax.

Mistake: You used your student loan . . . for something other than textbooks.

Solution: Using some of that student loan money for a spring break trip to Costa Rica might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but you're only hurting yourself in the long run. Remember that any student loan money you spend will have to be repaid with interest; so, that $1,500 trip to Costa Rica times 8.5 percent interest is actually going to cost $1,627.50. Already booked the trip? Try to pay down a little more next month to bring your accrued interest back under control. You want to be putting dents in the total amount you have to pay back - not in your wallet.

Mistake: You missed a health insurance premium payment.

Solution: Most health insurance companies offer a 15- to 30-day grace period for premium payments, so even if you missed the soft deadline listed on your bill there might still be time. Call your health insurance provider immediately and, if possible, pay over the phone to avoid any mail delays or late fees. Outside of the grace period? It's time to beg. Unlike credit card companies, health insurance companies are pretty strict about cutting you off - i.e., canceling your insurance - if you fail to pay inside the grace period, and they often have policies in place in which, once you're kicked out, you can never apply for insurance with them again. Explain what happened and see if there is an option to appease them: by paying for the next two months in advance, or accepting a higher premium. As painful as it is, even a higher premium is a small price to pay compared to the alternative: paying for costly medical services entirely out of pocket.

The worst thing you can do in every single one of these cases is nothing. Put on your big girl undies and make it right before one financial mistake becomes total financial ruin.

12 Easy Ways to Mimimize Jet Lag

Jet lag can put a damper on a fun trip. To avoid feeling dehydrated and exhausted when traveling, try these easy tricks to prevent jet lag before it happens and to cure it when and if it does. These travel tips will help you enjoy your next big trip even more!

Before you leave for your trip

  • Start getting on your new schedule before you leave for your trip. If you will be jumping ahead a few hours, try going to bed a little earlier each night starting about a week before your trip. By the time you get to your destination, your body will have mostly adjusted to your new time zone.
  • Choose an overnight flight. Depending on the direction you're heading when you fly, choosing a red eye can help you get on the schedule of the place you're heading to. You can sleep on the way over and wake up on the time of the place you've arrived at.
  • Pack a pillow and headphones. Bring along anything that will help you sleep better on your flight. Neck pillows are easy to travel with and can make all the difference in how well you sleep on the plane. Headphones will help block out any noise that may disturb you.
  • Exercise. Working out can help you relieve nervous energy and tire you out before your trip so that you're able to relax and sleep well on your flight.
  • Don't stress out before your flight. Anxiety can make jet lag worse, so take measures before you travel to make your experience go as smoothly as possible. Check in to your flight the day before, get through airport security efficiently, and pack smart.

While you're flying

  • Stay hydrated. Throughout your flight, make sure to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration, which is the part of jet lag that can make you feel the worst physically. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as both can led to dehydration.
  • Eat smart. It's easy to opt for junk food and heavy meals while you're flying since your options can be limited. To avoid feeling sick or sluggish when you land, avoid overeating on your flight, and try to stick to lighter, healthier options if you can.
  • Stretch your legs during your flight. If you're flying a long distance, make sure to spend any time you're not sleeping moving around and staying active. This will help get the blood flowing throughout your body and prevent muscle stiffness when you arrive.
  • Sleep! Sleep is one of the best ways to avoid jet lag, especially if you are going several hours forward into a new time zone. Even if you aren't, it's important to get as much sleep as you can so that when you land, you haven't lost the equivalent of a night's sleep. Get comfortable with a pillow, blanket, sleep mask, and headphones, and doze off.

When you arrive at your destination

  • Sync up with the local time. In order to get on the right schedule, try to stay awake until it's time for bed at your new destination. This will help you reset your schedule, so that you can get your body on local time.
  • Get some natural light you when land. Natural light is a stimulant and can help revitalize you throughout the day at your new destination so that you can make it until bed time. Spend time enjoying your new location outdoors!
  • Stay on your regular exercise schedule. If you're active at home, try to get some exercise while you're traveling. Getting off your schedule can disrupt your sleep patterns further.

How a Moving Fan Letter Finally Convinced Me to Come Out of the Closet

Daniel Franzese is an actor and stand-up comic who has appeared on HBO's Looking and in films including Mean Girls and Bully.

When I was in the closet, I never thought I would see a day my parents would accept me, 100 percent, for who I was. Now, my dad can't wait for my wedding, and my mom has been the guest of honor on Pride floats with me more than once! I really underestimated them.

I think the lack of gay representation in TV and film when I was growing up was probably the culprit. I watched a lot of TV - even if it was a show I didn't watch, I would make sure to at least watch one episode, sometimes flipping between channels to do so. I was scanning the programs looking for someone like me. Winners of contests and kid game shows, young actors on sitcoms, even adult versions of myself. But it seemed that characters like me were either bullies or being bullied. I didn't really see anyone who appeared to be gay, or big, portrayed as anything else. And that wasn't how I saw myself.

I was 26 when I landed the role of Damian in Mean Girls. I was out to myself, but too scared to say out loud that I was gay to anyone in the entertainment industry. The entire time I was making that film, I was conflicted about who I was, and how I felt. At this point in my career I had heard the advice to keep my sexuality private. "Private" didn't sound like such a bad word. It put a cool spin on not telling the truth. Lying, even. Denying.

Daniel Franzese and his mom

In 2014, on the 10th anniversary of Mean Girls, a fan wrote me a two-page letter that began with: "I don't know if you are gay or not, but it doesn't matter, but you playing Damian changed my life. I went from a chubby, queer, sissy kid who was made fun of in 8th grade, to becoming a college freshman who the senior girls came up to in the lunchroom on the first day and said 'You're like Damian, come sit with us.'" He went on to thank me for his popularity. How much of a difference that could have made me for me if I had had someone to identify with on screen. It made me realize how profound that was, so I came out of the closet in a letter to my character Damian.

Shortly after, when I was filming HBO's Looking, I went to the premiere at the legendary Castro Theater in San Francisco. I spent the day before outside Harvey Milk's old office, now the home of the Human Rights Campaign, where the cheers, footsteps and tears of my LGBTQ ancestors could be seen and heard in the wind, sky and pavement. I stood as myself, playing an HIV-positive gay character on a major cable network. I felt authentic and at home, and knew that every time one of us folks who don't fit the mold appears on screen, it's a victory. It's a new character, and a new story, and a new life to teach us lessons about people who have stories that matter but so seldom get heard.

Standing right in front of the steps of Harvey Milk's photo shop, I felt more inspired than ever before. I became an ambassador for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. I have lobbied Capitol Hill three times with Ms. Taylor's incredible family. I am also an ambassador for LAMBDA Legal and a friend to many other LGBTQ organizations. I realized I have a voice. I have seen great triumphs like marriage equality, alongside unforgivable attacks on us, like the horrific shooting at Pulse in Orlando. I got engaged to be married to the love of my life, and I started really pursuing stand-up a gift I have had for a long time, but was afraid to use because I kept myself "private." Now I do stand-up comedy proudly and openly and authentically. I live my life unapologetically happy and free and honestly. The moment I felt proudest to be LGBTQ is right now - and every day.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Don't Just Have a Bahamas Home - They Have an Entire Island

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill didn't want just any beach house - they wanted a whole damn island, and it only took a modest nine years to build their picture-perfect getaway from the ground up.

Back in 2003, the couple arrived at the future site of their home on an island in the Bahamas, which was then only inhabited by a mere shack. When the duo bought the 20-acre property, they didn't exactly realize how much effort their home-building project would entail. "We set out to build a house. We had no idea we had to build everything else," Hill told Architectural Digest in a recent feature. "We basically had to build a little town."

To craft their dreamy slice of paradise, Hill and McGraw teamed up with architects Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley of McAlpine, the same design firm that helped with their homes in Tennessee. They wanted to "feel connected to the outside," Hill explained to Architectural Digest, especially when it comes to the ocean breeze. After laying down the property's infrastructure, construction workers got down to business to fulfill the designers' vision: something encapsulating the idea that "in paradise, you live in ways you can't live in civilization."

This vision came to fruition in the form of a sprawling compound with eight "pavilions," which are all connected by open-air passageways. As if the outside of the home wasn't enough of a sight to see, the inside may be even better. Interior designer Ray Booth crafted the perfect naturalistic decor that speaks for itself. "I think the beach has always represented, to the McGraws, a simplicity that their everyday life lacks," Booth said. "So this house needed to offer a real clarity and cleanliness in its aesthetic. It's essentially a bleached-out white [throughout]; where there is color, it's pulled directly out of those beautiful Bahamian waters."

Simply put, their Bahamian getaway is straight out of a dream. Read on for a peek at their tropical digs, and then head on over to ArchitecturalDigest.com for the full story.

Thankfully, George Clooney Did NOT End Up Naming His Twins After His Tequila Brand

Four months after announcing that they'd be expecting twins (and after George's mom, Nina, announced they'd be having a boy and a girl), George and Amal Clooney welcomed their little ones on Tuesday. The couple named their new bundles of joy Alexander and Ella, which are way better than "Casa" and "Amigos," which George recently joked that Amal had forbidden him to do - the names, of course, are from George's Casamigos tequila brand, which he co-owns with Cindy Crawford's husband, Rande Gerber. Congrats to the happy couple on their growing family, and congrats to the twins for not having to be named after a liquor company!

These Will Be the Hottest Wedding Trends of 2017

Wedding trends have a way of creeping up on you, usually scattered a little bit here and there, until BAM something you thought you'd never see at a wedding is the norm. (Like, remember when every wedding had spray-painted little plastic toy animals?) The trends on the horizon for 2017 include some of these subtle changes, often influenced by social media themes in other nonwedding areas, but some are distinctly unconventional in a way that feels more like a substantial shift than a swiftly passing fad. Quite frankly, couples are doing weddings the way they want to do them, whether it's weirdly outlandish or pared-down and personal.

Here's what we're predicting will be all over your Instagram in the coming months! #GetReadyForWeddingSeasonHashtags

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller's Love Story Can Be Traced Back to 1 Tweet

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller are known for keeping their romance pretty private. Aside from a few Instagram pictures here and there, the two rarely talk about their relationship, though Ariana recently sparked engagement rumors when she wore a diamond sparkler on her ring finger. While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, it's also worth pointing out that Ariana and Mac never actually confirmed their relationship, either (sensing a pattern?). Let's take a walk down memory lane and see how their love story really began.

Nas on President Trump: "We All Know a Racist Is in Office"

Nas may be known for his eye-opening rap lyrics, but now, he's speaking out on our current political climate and has a lot to say about President Donald Trump. The rapper recently penned a passionate open letter directed at the president, where he asks the public to act and not silence ourselves during this presidency.

"We all know a racist is in office," Nas wrote for Mass Appeal. "People can talk their sh*t. Comedians can sound racist. People can go through their moments of that sh*t, but when you have the responsibility of being president and you carry on like that, you send a strong message to people outside of your group that they ain't worth sh*t."

Nas is unquestionably one of the most politically aware rappers our country has seen, and his letter to President Trump reasserts that. He explains that the president's morals and messages often make minorities feel like they "ain't worth sh*t."

While Nas doesn't vote nor does he "pay attention to politics," he believes his actions are enough. "My way of addressing these issues is through my work. Whatever president may be in office doesn't affect my work directly. The way he affects people is what affects me," Nas wrote. "My focus is on what's happening with real people in their everyday lives. How they behave, the decisions they make, and how that affects families. I grew up in a single-parent household, so I was affected by that life. But it didn't stop me. So I speak to the everyday people. I speak to everybody.
