19 Big Differences Between the Book and TV Show Versions of 13 Reasons Why

Note: MAJOR SPOILERS for 13 Reasons Why below!

Long before 13 Reasons Why was a hit Netflix show, the moving account of the life and death of Hannah Baker originated in Jay Asher's bestselling 2007 young adult novel of the same name. Both versions of the story are addicting, brutally honest depictions of teen suicide, depression, and grief, but showrunner Brian Yorkey decided to make a few huge changes when it came time to adapt it for TV. From simple things - like how long it takes Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) to get through the tapes - to major differences - like the way Hannah (Katherine Langford) chooses to end her life - read on to see how Asher's book differs from the adaptation.

  1. Clay listens to all of the tapes in one night. If you were at all frustrated by Clay's slow progression through Hannah's tapes in the TV show, you'll probably be a big fan of the way Asher originally chose to do it. After receiving the box of tapes on his doorstep in the book, Clay binges them in one sitting. In the show, Tony tells Clay that he's "the slowest yet" of all of the listeners.
  2. Clay doesn't figure out Tony is following him right away. Although Clay has a run-in with Tony in episode one that confirms he's the one Hannah made responsible for watching everyone on her list, book Clay doesn't realize that it's Tony until he listens to the fourth cassette tape (after stealing Tony's Walkman).
  3. Social media doesn't factor into Hannah's bullying. Sites like Facebook and Twitter certainly existed when Asher published the novel in 2007, but they had yet to become all-consuming forces in the lives of teenagers like they are now. There are references to Clay's cell phone, but the photos of Hannah that Justin and Tyler spread through the school via group text in the series are only word-of-mouth gossip in the book. Rumors by themselves are definitely damaging, but actually seeing the images of Hannah passed around so cruelly adds a new layer of pain to her bullying.
  4. Clay doesn't have hallucinations about Hannah. Some of the more shocking scenes in the show happen when Clay has visions of Hannah bleeding out in the middle of the gym and at the school dance, and it's mentioned in passing that he used to take duloxetine to treat an anxiety disorder (which is why he can only handle listening to one tape at a time). This never happens in the book.
  5. The high school students are tamer, so to speak. Parties full of underage drinkers happen in the book (as do the horrifying rape scenes), but the show doesn't hold back from showing other realities of being a teenager today: smoking pot, having sex, driving drunk, cursing, etc.
  6. Clay injures himself in another way. Distraught and distracted by the tapes, Clay slams his bike into a car in the first episode, cutting his head wide open. He's just as unlucky in Asher's novel, except he gets a nasty slice on his hand from a fence.

  1. Courtney Crimsen is still the worst, but in a different way. Book Courtney still has a reputation as the strait-laced nice girl at school, and she also sleeps over Hannah's house to help her set a risqué trap for the Peeping Tom who's been following her around. Instead of getting drunk and making out during a game of Truth or Dare, however, the two give each other a back massage in front of the guy watching them. Courtney, who isn't gay in the book, then spreads nasty rumors about Hannah being a slut in an attempt to raise her street cred at school.
  2. The order of the tapes is different. In the show, Clay is the 11th person to receive the tapes and chooses to skip number 12 (Bryce, a rapist who would probably destroy the tapes if he got them) and give them to the last person on the list instead, Mr. Porter. The resolution is less clear in the novel, since Clay is ninth on the list, and simply mails them off to number 10. There also aren't any scenes of his classmates conspiring to keep the tapes from being discovered.
  3. Clay never confronts Bryce or records his confession. Because the order of the tapes is different in the book and none of the kids are trying to stop Clay from listening to all of them, Clay doesn't try to bring Bryce to justice for his actions. He never records his confession of raping Hannah, or gives "side 14" to Mr. Porter.
  4. There isn't a lawsuit. The Bakers only appear in the book very briefly, and their lawsuit against the school doesn't exist. The only time they come up is when someone mentions that they've closed their shoe store (which is replaced by a pharmacy in the show) in the wake of their daughter's suicide.
  5. Clay's parents are barely in it. When Clay first starts listening to the tapes at the beginning of the book, his mom comes in to check on him and they have quick conversations throughout the night. In the show, his parents are in every episode (and what feels like every other scene), mostly because his mom is the lawyer tasked with defending the school district against the Bakers' lawsuit.
  6. Hannah's suicide is done differently. The scene of Hannah killing herself by slicing her wrists open with a razor blade is extremely graphic and difficult to watch. It's a huge departure from Asher's original portrayal of her death, which is referenced only when Clay says she "swallowed a handful of pills."

  1. Clay and Hannah aren't exactly friends. Some of the most touching, heartbreaking moments throughout the 13 Reasons Why show happen when Clay is mourning the future he and Hannah could have had or reliving memories from their close relationship. He pines after her for nearly the entire season, and is confused when she pushes him away after their heated makeout session at Jessica's party. The kiss still happens in the original story, but the lead up to it is different. They work at the movie theater together for one Summer, but Hannah says on the tapes that she wishes they could've been closer and gotten to know each other better. The two don't actually ever have a legitimate conversation until the night of the party when they hook up.
  2. The Monet's crew has a different motto. In an effort to update the book, Hannah, Alex, and Jessica's motto goes from "olly olly oxen free" to "FML."
  3. And Sheri has a different name. In the book, a nice cheerleader named Jenny Kurtz chats with Hannah during the Dollar Valentine fundraiser, and is later responsible for knocking over the stop sign that causes Jeff to die. Jenny is changed to Sheri on TV and pursues a relationship with Clay that she doesn't originally.
  4. Speaking of Jeff, he's a much more minor character in the book. It's hard not to crush on Jeff throughout the show. As a popular, well-meaning baseball player who takes pity on Clay's ineptitude with girls, he's instantly lovable, which makes his sudden death in a car crash because of Sheri knocking over the stop sign that much more painful. He still dies in the book, but since his character is a senior that none of the main characters are friends with, it doesn't have as big of an impact on Clay's life.
  5. Alex doesn't attempt suicide. Alex Standall openly struggles with fitting in at school and his remorse over what the group has done to Hannah in the show, and a scene of him dropping in Bryce's pool at one point suggests that he doesn't necessarily want to come up for air. It's revealed in the finale that he shoots himself in head, but not if he survives. None of this happens in the book.
  6. Tyler doesn't have a plan to shoot up the school. A disturbing scene in the show alludes to Tyler's plans for a school shooting (he opens a secret compartment in a trunk in his bedroom to reveal a stash of guns and explosives), but like Alex's fate, he doesn't do that in the novel.
  7. The book's ending is less complex. After listening to Hannah's tapes and wishing that he could've picked up on signs of what she was going to do earlier, book Clay reaches out to an old friend, Skye, who's been showing signs of depression. This also happens in the show, but since there's likely going to be a second season, more storylines are left open: Tyler's violent plans, Alex's attempted suicide, the Bakers' lawsuit, Sheri turning herself in, Bryce's rapes coming to light, and more.

Is It Halloween Yet? Nikkie Tutorials Has Convinced Us to Go as Wonder Woman

After seeing the new Wonder Woman film, we're all planning to dress as the kickass hero for Halloween. Beauty blogger Nikkie Tutorials is no exception and showed us exactly how to transform into the comic-book character to celebrate the girl-power-filled film.

Nikkie decided to go the 2D route and applied her makeup in the style of a comic rather than modeled after the Wonder Woman from the film. Using black and white liquid liners, Nikkie transformed herself into the heroine. The results are ultra impressive, and we're starting to practice the technique now to prepare for our next cosplay opportunity.

The Story Behind Queen Letizia and King Felipe VI's Love

Image Source: Getty / Carlos Alvarez
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain have been married for more than 13 years, and while the royal couple is solid, their relationship didn't start that smoothly.

Back in 2002, Queen Letizia was just known as Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, an international journalist working for Televisión Española, anchoring the evening news and reporting from abroad on disasters like the terrorist attack in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001 and the war in Iraq. Then Prince Felipe must have been a fan of the news because rumor has it he asked a journalist friend, Pedro Erquicia, to set up a dinner and invite Letizia so the two could meet. While reports say Letizia handed over her number to the prince, the two didn't start dating for a few more months.

Things got serious in the following years while the couple dated in secret, and on Nov. 1, 2003, the Spanish royal family shocked the country by announcing the prince's engagement to Letizia. But the marriage could have never happened: Letizia was not only a commoner, becoming the first woman with no royal blood to be in the line of succession for the Spanish crown, but she was also divorced. The journalist had been married to Alonso Guerrero Pérez until 1999.

While some didn't approve of the engagement, Prince Felipe's parents, Queen Sofía and King Juan Carlos, stood by the couple, although there was a bigger issue. If Letizia's previous marriage had been performed by the Catholic church, the Vatican would have had to extend a special permission that allowed her to marry Felipe. Luckily, Letizia's previous marriage had only been a civil ceremony, and the couple officially wed at the Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid on May 22, 2004. Now the queen - King Juan Carlos abdicated the crown to King Felipe in 2014 - admired for her fashion sense, she has two daughters with Felipe, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía.

Even the Biggest Jason Momoa Fan Might Not Know This About His Name

You may know Jason Momoa as the ripped actor behind Aquaman and the incredibly loving husband of Lisa Bonet, but do you know his real name? It's common for celebrities to go by their middle name, and Jason is no different. His full name is actually Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa, after his father, Joseph Momoa. Even though he was raised by his single-parent mom, Coni, in Norwalk, IA, when he was in college, he moved back to the Hawaiian Islands where he was born to reconnect with his estranged father, who is of Native Hawaiian descent. Whether he goes by Jason or Joseph, we love him just the same.

30 Tiny, Chic Wrist Tattoos That Are Better Than a Bracelet

If you truly want to wear your heart on your sleeve, then the wrist should be the canvas for your next tattoo. A flat plane fairly easy to tattoo, the wrist is popular for first-timers and small designs or sayings. While the wrist is generally a more visible tattoo spot than, say, the ribs or back, this placement allows for easy coverage with foundations or bracelets - making it an ideal choice for those who might be slightly tentative to get inked in a more prominent location. Conversely, we're also partial to the wrist because of its visibility: the conspicuousness of this spot is perfect for tattoos meant to serve as a source of inspiration, support, or reminder.

But don't just take our word for it - check out these gorgeous pieces of wrist ink to get some serious tattoo inspiration.

The Grandmother-Approved Makeup Trend That's Making a Huge Comeback

If you follow a lot of makeup artists on Instagram or Snapchat, you've likely noticed a spike in powder application (note Kim Kardashian). That's all due to a trend called baking.

Baking isn't new - it's been used for years in the drag community, but thanks to a spike in highlighting and contouring, the technique is getting some attention. Also known as baking, the method is similar to highlighting, but without using any shimmer. Here's how it's done: After applying foundation and concealer, use a damp makeup sponge to pat a thick coat of powder on areas that you want to look brighter. Try underneath your eye, along the top of your jawbone, and down the center of your nose (places where you'd ordinarily highlight). After letting the powder sit for five to 10 minutes, dust it away with a fluffy brush.

Thanks to baking, you'll look chiseled all night - not only does the powder highlight your features, it sets your foundation. Keep reading to see how it's done and to shop the best products for a perfectly cooked complexion.

Brett Eldredge Is Country Music's Hottest Eligible Bachelor

Are you ready to meet your new country boyfriend? With his third studio album on the horizon, 31-year-old singer-songwriter Brett Eldredge is no newbie, but his star is rising, and fast. When we say he's "one to watch," we mean that quite literally. He's got the looks department down with those come-hither baby blues, a sculpted body (we don't hate his beach pics), a bit of scruff, and an easy smile, but scroll through his Instagram (or Twitter or Snapchat) and it's easy to see why he has such a loyal social following - it's the sweet photos with his mom; hilarious videos of his ridiculous shenanigans; adorable photos and videos of him cuddling his dog, Edgar; and home videos of him serenading the camera (aka "bedhead jams") that prove he's the total package.

I spoke with Brett about his new album, what he's looking for in a girlfriend, his complicated relationship with social media, and, of course, the love of his life - Edgar. Keep reading for the interview, and we dare you not to crush hard for this budding heartthrob.

15 Things You Stop Giving a Sh*t About in Your 30s

A lot of people think that your 20s are your best years, but actually, they are kind of the worst. You're still trying to get a hang of the whole "adult" thing we're all supposed to do, you start to understand what "hangover" really means, and it's all just kind of HARD. But there's a light at the end of the tunnel, because with your 30s comes some major relief. You're more established, you know yourself better, and you are completely OK with saying "no." In fact, you enjoy it. Here are some things you stop caring so much about in your 30s.

  1. Other people's lives. Everyone's employed, dating, in a relationship, engaged, married, married with kids. People are finally getting their sh*t together(ish). Awesome! So are you. Moving on.
  2. Going to the hippest place to eat. You don't care if the cruffin/cronut/crancake (croissant + pancake - we may have made this one up) is literally the best thing since sliced bread. You're not waiting in line for two hours just to say you tried it.
  3. Missing out. FOMO seriously becomes a thing of the past. Really, everyone was at some crazy-awesome event last night? Cool. You were at home, drinking wine with your cat, watching murder mysteries, and it was glorious.
  4. Making a big deal about birthdays. Eh, it's just another day, and we already celebrated a million of these back when we all turned 30 anyway. Let's not make a fuss about it. In fact, how about let's pretend it's not happening?
  5. Being friends with people who are jerks. In the past, you might have had your reasons for keeping friends around. Maybe it was out of convenience, maybe it was because they had a car. But once you hit your 30s, you narrow your friend group down to the people you a) really want to be around and/or b) the people who live within a five-block radius and who you also really want to be around. You're cool cutting out the others.
  6. Keeping up with all the current trends. We already know what kind of music we like, we have all the shows we watch recorded, and almost every movie coming out will be just as good (nay, better) when watched from the comfort of our couches.
  7. Your wrinkles. OK, maybe you worry about them a little. But you start to come up with different ways to view them. They're "laugh lines." Face trophies? Corner-of-the-eye art?
  8. Drama. Relationship drama, friend drama, family drama, work drama, blah, blah, blah. Maybe you used to love hearing the sordid details about who is doing whom and how that makes so-and-so feel, but lately the effort it takes to keep up with it all just isn't worth it.
  9. The occasional splurge. While you still may be money conscious, you are a little more liberal with where your cash goes, because unlike your 20s, you probably have some. Staying in the dingiest hotel you can find just to save $20 and enduring a bus full of drunk people late on a Friday night isn't working for you anymore. You'll drop that $10 on an Uber, thanks.
  10. The latest fashion craze. We're not saying you necessarily let yourself go per se, but in your 30s, knowing the trends doesn't mean you have to partake in them. Because your favorite pair of jeans (that you've worn four times this week) are a way more appealing option than crop tops and shiny temporary tattoos, or whatever those crazy kids are wearing these days.
  11. Getting your money's worth out of an open bar. Open bars used to be synonymous with "completely wasted," because you (obviously) had to make the most of the fact that people were voluntarily giving you alcohol that was essentially free. Now, the consequences of indulging in an open bar are never far from your mind. You're not trying to prove anything. And hangovers in your 30s are no joke.
  12. Getting the first edition of new technology. Remember how fun it was to sit outside of Best Buy or the Apple Store so that you could be one of the first people with whatever new tech device was being released? No, you don't, because it sucked. Your phone works just fine, and you're happy to wait until the first (and maybe second) edition of the fancy new thing works out all of the inevitable kinks before you're throwing down money for it.
  13. Keeping up with social media. You're late to half of the new social media trends, and on the other half you miss the train completely. What the hell does Snapchat actually do again?
  14. Documenting every single moment of your life. In the past, you may have been the type of person to bring a legitimate camera to special events, which were, incidentally, viewed through your lens rather than via your actual eyes. Now, after 1,742 weddings, baby showers, and bachelorette parties, you are more than content to snap a few shots on your phone while actually being present for the event instead of concerned with capturing every second of it digitally.
  15. What people think about you. Long gone are the days of worrying about running into an old friend when you're wearing your "maybe I will work out today, just kidding I am going to watch Netflix" outfit. You spent enough of the previous decade overanalyzing everything you said and did, but now you've figured out one important fact: you're f*cking awesome, and you know it. Who cares if anyone else does?

21 Sweet Photos of Prince Philip and His Royal Grandkids

This Luxurious Serum Makes Your Skin So Perfect, You'll Proudly Skip Foundation

I'm usually first in line to try a trend. I am addicted to at-home peels, have made contouring a permanent step in my makeup routine, and even own more than one blue lipstick. But despite all the praise heaped on them, I couldn't get behind beauty oils.

Coconut oil made my fine hair too greasy, and I splurged on luxurious treatments only to break out the next day. So when I came upon Vintner's Daughter Active Botanical Serum ($185), I was more than hesitant - I was flat-out skeptical. So I reached out to the product's creator, April Gargiulo, to find out what makes it special.

"I don't have a beauty background," Gargiulo admitted to me immediately. "I'm a winemaker." She had not only struggled to treat her fine lines, breakouts, and inflammation but also couldn't find a formula that she believed was safe enough to put on her skin. Because of this void in the market, Gargiulo decided to create her own product.

"I applied the same philosophy - no shortcuts! - to skin care that I would to fine winemaking," she explained. She spent two years developing her treatment with scientists, and the result was a golden serum absolutely packed with nutrients.

A brief look at the ingredient list surprised me. All 22 items are extremely recognizable: they're plants! Each one is naturally loaded with vitamins. For example, alfalfa leaves contain vitamin D, and carrot seed oil features vitamin A, the original source of retinol. "It's everything your body needs to thrive . . . and the same ingredients are intensely skin beautifying," Gargiulo told me.

Hearing Gargiulo's passion for her serum made me eager to try it, despite my initial reservations. She advised me to cleanse, tone, and then use the Active Botanical Serum.

In the carton for the formula, there's a small insert counseling users on the "push/press" technique, which was developed just for this product. I followed along closely: after dispensing a few drops, I rubbed my palms together, which is supposed to activate the botanical ingredients. (It also allows the lovely rose aroma of the serum to permeate the room!) Then, I carefully pressed my serum-coated palms onto my face, neck, and décolleté for 30 seconds.

I immediately observed a dewy radiance, but it was later that week that I fell in love with the formula. I'd been using it nightly and noticed that my typically sallow complexion looked bright and healthy each morning. In fact, one day, I went through my entire makeup routine but skipped my foundation, because I thought I had already put it on. Daily application of the Vintner's Daughter Active Botanical Serum had made my skin tone that even.

I had never been disappointed by my skin before using Gargiulo's product, but now I was proud of it. I finally understand what Beyoncé is saying in "***Flawless" when she declares that she "woke up like this."

My Before-and-After Might Look Like Weight Loss, but I Gained Over 10 Pounds

The author (right) with her personal trainer

Imagine cutting out sugar, eating cleaner than you ever have in your entire life, working out daily, running half marathons, lifting heavier weights, getting eight hours of sleep a night, drinking plenty of water, and following literally every weight-loss tip you've ever heard or read about - and then not only NOT losing a single pound, but gaining more than 10 percent of your body weight in pounds.

Until recently, I've been about the same weight since the ninth grade. I'm a pretty tiny human, and I've always been petite - at 26 years old and standing only 5 foot 2 (and three quarters!), I still get some clothes from the kids section. So when I began my fitness journey, I never set out to lose weight, but I guess I had anticipated that maybe I would drop a few pounds as a side effect of getting healthier.

About two and a half years ago, I started learning healthy recipes, eating cleaner, learning how to run (and what a burpee is), trying yoga, cutting down on alcohol (almost completely), and living a healthier lifestyle. I noticed changes almost immediately in my body and brain, and I felt fantastic.

This past year and a half, after moving to San Francisco and working as a fitness writer, healthy living became my main priority and focus. Workout classes have become my favorite pastime, and I love grabbing a smoothie or healthy bite with friends. I meal prep, am more conscious than ever of what goes in my body, and work out at *least* five times a week. I even gave up ALL sugar for six weeks this past Spring.

It was at that time that I was cutting out sugar that I also had an annual checkup with my doctor scheduled, which just so happens to be the only time I ever use a scale (I don't own one, and I have never weighed myself regularly). I didn't pay any mind when my doctor asked me to step on the scale for her as she took notes . . . until the arm on that clunky, nearly-ancient metal contraption shot way, way past where I thought it would. Roughly 11 pounds past.

"Before" and Now

Does it look like I gained 11 pounds?

While it might sound ridiculous to someone who's been on a mission to lose 20, 50, or even 100 pounds, gaining 11 pounds is quite a bit when you're my size. And when you've been the exact same weight for about 12 years, seeing such a significant change can feel jarring.

Like I mentioned, I wasn't trying to lose weight, but to gain such a significant percentage in spite of all the effort I had put into my body was a huge shock. It felt like a slap in the face or a gut punch - and then I was immediately ashamed of how devastated I felt. I'm constantly preaching body positivity. "Love yourself no matter what you weigh! Eff the scale! A number does not define you!" I do mean those things, but then the second I put a toe on the scale, I crumbled completely when the number caught me off guard.

It was at that moment I realized that without ever acknowledging it, I had been rooting such a large part of my identity in my weight . . . but why? Why did I tie myself to this one number?

I was so disappointed in myself for not being stronger mentally and emotionally. I felt a sense of responsibility to my friends, community, and women around me to be stronger, and I felt that I had failed everyone, including myself in that moment.

I anxiously looked back at my photos from the past year to try to figure out if I "looked" heavier, as I frantically texted my closest friends for affirmation. Long story short, I came to realize (through the help of friends and my personal trainer) that the weight gain was healthy, and I had lost pounds of fat yet gained pounds of muscle, and that I had nothing to worry about, physically. But that's not the point.

"Before" and Now

In one moment, with one number, I allowed myself to be distracted from all the amazing things that I accomplished in the past year.

My resting heart rate is lower. My VO2 max is higher. My mile time is nearly HALF of what it was just three years ago. I ran more half-marathons and didn't get as tired. I can do two SoulCycle classes in a row and keep up the whole time. I can finally (almost!) get that full extension of Bird of Paradise in my yoga classes. I'm lifting heavier weights than I ever could've imagined. I learned proper deadlift form. I can see my abs without flexing (whaaat!). I'm healthier overall. I feel good. I feel strong.

The scale will never be able to tell my story.

It's clear I need to work on my self-esteem; I want to be stronger so I can be a better example for the people I love and for the women who look to me for strength. Looking back at my moment on the scale, feeling that sense of disappointment in my lack of emotional fortitude, I'm trying to channel what I learned from my chat with Tracee Ellis Ross: self-acceptance can be more forgiving than self-love. She told me, "Self-acceptance for me makes space for me to still be a whole person and to be compassionate and kind and loving to myself, even in moments that have pain in them."

I also truly feel that culturally, we need to shift our focus away from "how many pounds up or down" we are to how we feel and to all the commitment and work we put into loving ourselves and treating our bodies right. Before-and-after weight-loss stories DO tell this, but oftentimes our fixation is on the weight - the "goal" - rather than the journey itself. We're taught that weight loss is good and that weight gain is bad, regardless of what we did to get to that point or what kind of shape we're in.

I heard a quote at this year's Dare to Bare SF (a body-positivity festival hosted by Movemeant Foundation) from SoulCycle instructor Kamelle Mills: "Your body is telling a story about your soul . . . your spirit. What kind of story are you telling?" I know my body is telling a WAY better story than that stupid scale.

Queen Elizabeth II Did Something at Diana's Funeral That the Public Did Not See Coming

Princess Diana was honored with a public funeral on Sept. 6, 1997, seven days after her tragic death. The event brought in an estimated 2.5 billion viewers, while another three million crowded the streets of London to follow the route of Diana's coffin from Kensington Palace to her final resting place at the Spencer family home in Althorp. Diana's two sons, William and Harry, joined the funeral procession at St. James's Palace alongside their father, grandfather, and uncle Earl Spencer. The coffin, accompanied by eight Welsh Guards, passed Buckingham Palace, where members of the royal family waited outside. Queen Elizabeth II was one of them, and as Diana's coffin was carried past her, she made a very rare move: she bowed her head.

The queen's gesture is remarkable for a couple of reasons; first, while it is customary for others to bow (or curtsy) to her majesty, she is not technically required to bow or curtsy to others. She made a solemn, unexpected acknowledgment to her former daughter-in-law's casket that she rarely does for anyone else.

Second, there was a huge amount of drama within the royal family after Diana's death, including the fact that Queen Elizabeth II had insisted that Diana's ceremony be private - she faced "fierce resistance" from Prince Charles, and then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair also agreed that Diana should be laid out at St. James's Palace with a public funeral held at Westminster Abbey. Because the queen was so highly criticized for her silence and "business-as-usual" behavior in the wake of Diana's death, her bowing at the coffin attempted to send a message of compassion, honor, and genuine grief.

4 Intriguing Theories You Should Dive Into After Finishing The Keepers

It's hard to walk away from Netflix's The Keepers without some theory formed in the back of your mind; after watching interviews with suspects and hearing testimony from victims, most viewers developed suspicions even though the documentary series ended unresolved. And as we've learned from other cult-favorite true crime shows like Making a Murderer, nobody plays the theory game better than Reddit.

Several subreddits, including /r/The_Keepers and /r/UnresolvedMysteries, have become hotspots for speculation about the seemingly intertwined fates of Sister Cathy Cesnik and 20-year-old Joyce Malecki. In the aftermath of the hit docuseries, theories have arisen based on new developments in the case and an Ask Me Anything with the show's director. While it's possible to spend all day digging for possible explanations for the murders, there are a few particularly gripping theories that are worth reading once you finish binging the show.

Read on for four of the most compelling Reddit theories so far; they'll help fill the Netflix-addiction-size void in your heart.

How My Unlikely TV Habit Gives Me Newfound Hope For Democracy

2017 has been a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year for democracy.

Amidst a flurry of rollbacks, repeals, and pull-outs from the Trump administration, I've found myself searching for signs of the checks and balances I was taught to expect - hell, demand! - from our government. At the very least, some semblance of the (mostly) rational thinking that has traditionally been put forth by from the people in charge would be nice. Our legislative, executive and judicial branches feel exceedingly broken; it's as though the very ideals they were founded on are on the chopping block. Amidst all the chaos, however, there's one clear, shining beacon of hope. And despite how insanely boring it may sound, it comes in the form of congressional hearings.

Before your eyes glaze over, hear me out.

I've never been one of those people who actively seeks out the inner workings of government for entertainment. That is to say, you'll never catch me cross-checking the expected budget against realistic targets, or angrily shaking my fist at clauses in the full text of the AHCA, or hosting watching parties for bill votes. I'm more of a cable-news-and-internet gal, and the simple act of trying to watch hearings on CSPAN nearly put me off entirely. I don't get the channel in HD, and the pixelating images and distorted audio tends to make me feel like I've gone back in time. But once I discovered that I could stream the channel on my phone, the game instantly changed.

Almost overnight, I found myself becoming the kind of person who calls up friends and family and rants about how crazy and tunnel-visioned one senator was, or how one tiny detail that was maybe said offhandedly might actually be the truth we'd all been searching for. Congressional hearings were like the real-life version of Law & Order, except instead of being ripped from the headlines, they were making the headlines. As I said to my boyfriend a couple weeks ago, the congressional hearings were giving me life. They were a reminder of how things are supposed to work - and how two sides of the aisle can coexist in a way that feels like there's an end to all these means.

The Senate and House Select Committees on Intelligence have held several open, televised hearings on the Russia investigation over the last few months. And it's here that members of both chambers - and both parties - call witnesses to the stand and interrogate them on the things that we, the public, deserve to know the truth about. The witnesses can't reveal everything in open testimony, but the things that we're allowed to hear outside of the closed doors of briefing rooms have been some of the most incredible television I've ever watched. From Sally Yates telling the world that there was a "compromised situation" in the White House with Michael Flynn, to James Clapper's sassy clapback on the definition of leaks, to John Brennan's uncertainty about whether there was collusion - it was all pure, unadulterated infotainment.

Ultimately, it's the products of the quest for truth - and often, the direct acknowledgement of things that feel like they can't be right or just - that I've found solace in. To be clear, it's not a perfect process. The politics of both sides shows through in ways that are often cringeworthy. The leading questions, direct jabs across the aisle, and blatant disrespect to certain individuals almost always lead to an awkward silence thereafter, which is both completely intolerable and totally gripping. But at the same time, the fact that I ams watching something that feels like a defense against a broader insanity sweeping the country makes me feel like maybe, somehow, there is a reason to believe we'll get through these insanely dark times.

In just a few days, former FBI Director James Comey will give testimony in front of members of the Senate for the second time this year. It's a big deal: since he first took the stand back in May, he's been fired by the president and has been the center of wide-ranging questions about what's gone down - not just since Trump took office but in the lead-up to the election itself. And Comey is no stranger to the theatrics inherent to these hearings.

It was almost exactly 10 years ago that Comey testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on NSA surveillance. It was there that he dropped the bombshell that then-President George W. Bush had attempted to get Attorney General John Ashcroft to sign off on a wiretapping program from his hospital bed - and the only reason that they weren't able to pull it off was that Comey himself had run to the hospital and interceded in the nick of time. Not only was this "improper conduct" something that would stain the Bush administration for years thereafter, it also established Comey's reputation as a top-notch storyteller, buttressed by the fact that all of his stories were 100 percent verified truths.

Comey's testimony in early May was somewhat of a show-stopper in and of itself, with his now-infamous revelation that the fact that he may have influenced the election in any way made him "mildly nauseous." And while many of us may still question the motivation behind the timing and presentation of his announcements on the Clinton email scandal, it only adds to the dramatic tension that will play out when he takes the stand on Thursday to finally tell the story that's been years in the making. (Plus, as we now know, Comey is a meticulous note taker, and the man has receipts.)

Ultimately, we have no idea what will come of Thursday's hearings, or if any charges will be brought as a result of the investigations which the special prosecutor and the congressional committees are undertaking. But what I can definitively say, without a doubt, that in a year full of unexpected and disappointing developments, congressional hearings have given me hope for democracy. And for now, that's enough for me.

Hands Down, These Are the 14 Best Dry Shampoos on the Market

I'll be honest: When dry shampoo first bursted onto the beauty scene, my initial thought was something along the lines of "WTF?!" This "Nightmare" Wedding Story Has the Internet Outraged For Good Reason

Wedding etiquette has become more relaxed and less traditional over the years, but what one man did at his best friend's wedding is widely being viewed as disrespectful across social media. According to a recent submission on Slate's "Dear Prudence" relationship column, one woman says her husband's best friend/best man, "John," proposed to his girlfriend, "Jane," in the middle of her wedding!

"The entire atmosphere felt moving. So moving in fact that John stopped midceremony to propose to his longtime girlfriend, "Jane," and reveal her pregnancy," the anonymous woman recalled. "I couldn't even hear the vows my husband wrote or the rest of the ceremony over the noise of Jane's happy sobs, her very surprised family who were also guests, and people seated nearby congratulating her."

If that wasn't horrific enough, what John did later that evening was the icing on the cake. No pun intended. "When John gave his toast, he apologized for being caught up in the moment, and then proceeded to talk about he and Jane's future with nary a mention of us."

The woman in question asked if she and her husband were "angry over nothing" or were they justified for wanting to end their friendship with "John." It didn't take long for the internet to weigh in with their (passionate) thoughts on the awkward ordeal. Check out some of the reactions to the now-viral wedding nightmare ahead.

Lizzie McGuire's Butterfly Hair Clips Are Back and Better Than They Were in the '90s

Growing up, there was rarely a day I left my house without one (or, like, five, if we're being honest) of my go-to butterfly clips securely fastened in my hair. I had quite the nifty collection of the creature-inspired accessories: an oversize glittery rainbow one (obviously my favorite), a sparkly silver option, a light blue one, and a whole stash of those smaller multicolored plastic clips that were perfect for holding back my bangs. As someone who wore uniforms to school every day, butterfly clips were a way for me to stand out in the crowd and add my own personal flair to things.

My love for these insect-like adornments only grew stronger as I saw some of my favorite leading ladies sporting them on TV. Most notably, Hilary Duff (aka one of my childhood idols) regularly rocked butterfly clips while in character as Lizzie McGuire, the ultimate '90s babe. Plus, not one but two cast members on The Princess Diaries appeared in the film with these clips in their hair. Mandy Moore's cool-girl character had a few fastened in her hair when she belted out "Stupid Cupid" in the beach scene, while Lilly Moscovitz also wore them in her cropped 'do, thus proving any gal could rock them, popular or not.

Fast forward to 2017, and my sacred butterfly clips that were once practically glued into my strands are unfortunately most likely buried in a landfill far, far away. But man, do I wish I had those babies in my bathroom drawer right now, because it looks like the clips are officially back on the beauty scene. That's right, ladies. Thanks to a sweeping obsession with all things nostalgic, butterfly clips, much like hair scrunchies, have been gloriously resurrected, and they're even better than they were in the '90s.

A prime example of this hair accessory's comeback? Vanessa Hudgens sported a handful of DIY-ed butterfly clips at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, proving that they'll make anyone look like a glamorous boho goddess rather than a little girl stuck in her preschool days.

A handful of retailers like Free People and Urban Outfitters noticed this throwback trend bubbling up again and have started selling a few chic options to let '90s babes revel in the nostalgia. But today's iterations aren't just those cheaply made plastic ones you used to buy at the drugstore - these new and improved versions are more modern and sleek representations of the elegant insects.

Ready to dive (or shall I say, flutter) back into our favorite decade and decorate your 'do with cute barrettes galore? Read on for the chicest, festival-season-approved butterfly clips that are now on the market. This one's for you, Lizzie McGuire.

5 Things to Know About Dwayne Johnson's Longtime Girlfriend, Lauren Hashian

Lauren Hashian is a singer-songwriter and Boston drummer Sib Hashian's daughter, but she also happens to be Dwayne Johnson's longtime girlfriend. While the two have a habit of keeping their love life private, People's Sexiest Man Alive briefly opened up about their relationship back in November, telling the publication, "She teases me about everything. Everything. Nothing is off limits in our house. And it's the beauty of it. And I tease her with everything." Here's everything we could find out about Dwayne's other half.

  1. She comes from a famous family. Lauren was born and raised in Lynwood, MA. Her mother is named Suzanne and her father, Sib, was the drummer for the famous rock band Boston. He replaced original drummer Jim Masedea in 1975 and played with the band until the early '80s. Sadly, Sib passed away at age 67 after suffering a heart attack while performing on board a cruise ship in March.
  2. She's been with Dwayne for a long time. While Lauren and Dwayne didn't make their red carpet debut until 2013 at the LA premiere of G.I. Joe, the couple has actually been together for almost a decade. They met on the set of Dwayne's 2007 film, The Game Plan, but they didn't start dating until a year later.
  3. She is a mom. In December 2015, Lauren welcomed her first child with Dwayne, a beautiful baby girl named Jasmine. She's the second child for the actor, who shares teenage daughter Simone with ex-wife Dany Garcia.
  4. She's on good terms with Dwayne's ex-wife. Unlike most divorced couples, Lauren actually seems to get along with Dany, who's also Dwayne's manager. The two often accompany Dwayne to his movie premieres and award shows, and based off of their Instagrams, they even celebrate holidays together.
  5. She's a singer. Just like her father, Lauren is also a musician. She recently dropped her new single, "Go Hard," and in 2005, she appeared on the competition show, R U That Girl, which was hosted by Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. Unfortunately, she didn't win.

Mona Is Not "Uber A" on Pretty Little Liars - She May Be Our Last Hero

This week's episode of Pretty Little Liars gave us a shocking conclusion. After weeks and weeks of trying to puzzle out the identity of the show's final "Uber A," we seemingly got our biggest hint yet. In the final moments, we find out Mona has a pretty advanced lair set up in her apartment. She's got pictures of all the liars, police case files, suspicious shovels, snaps of the big board game, and more. Upon first glance, it's easy to assume that Mona never quite let go of her evil ways and that she scooped up the game after Charlotte DiLaurentis's murder. But, listen, we're not buying it. This is exactly what we're meant to think, but if you look back, there's a lot of evidence to the contrary. In fact, Mona might be our last great hero. Let's get into it.

Before we go into Mona's possible true motives, let me explain why we shouldn't believe what we're seeing. Throughout the history of PLL, there have been a lot of moments where we thought we knew what was going on, but we really didn't. Case in point: the "Ezra is 'A'" reveal in season four. It was all set up. We see him wearing a shady outfit, and he has a massive lair all set up. In the episodes that follow, we see all his sneaky and creepy activity. Eventually, though, we find out he's not "A" at all. He's just doing extensive research and trying to write a book about the whole ordeal. The point is that anytime we're being spoon fed something this big, we should take it with a grain of salt. Mona is a red herring. If we're being led to believe that she's "Uber A," it's very likely the opposite is true. And that brings me to my next point.

By now, it should be clear that Mona only wants to help the girls. In her lair, we see the shovels the girls used to bury Dr. Rollins. This is the very crime Mona helps cover up (by getting Lucas's windshield replaced). This must be part of her attempts to further bury the evidence, pun intended. Elsewhere on her mysterious cork board, we see pictures of the game and multiple pictures of the biggest suspects. This is because Mona's trying to figure everything out. She's trying to uncover exactly how the "Liars Lament" board game works, and she's trying to figure out who "Uber A" is. She's always been one step ahead of the liars, so why should she stop now?

And that's basically our big theory: Mona is the final hero of the show. With only three episodes left, it must be the answer. Mona will figure out the identity of "Uber A" before the liars. And once she does, she'll do what she can to save them and redeem herself from the evil she's done in the past. With a looming death toll in the series finale, we're worried this means Mona might not make it out alive. Cross your fingers, friends. This is going to be a dark ride.

Luke Bryan Attempts Some of Jason Derulo's Dance Moves During CMT Performance

Although the CMT Awards made sure to trot out some tried-and-true combinations (Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban, we're looking at you), the show also introduced country music fans to some rather unique mashups. After Florida Georgia Line teamed up with The Chainsmokers for a surprisingly catchy performance, Luke Bryan and Jason Derulo reunited to belt out "Want to Want Me" and "Strip It Down." It was the cherry on top for the duo, who took home the CMT Award for performance of the year for their appearance on CMT Crossroads.

The Chainsmokers and Florida Georgia Line's CMT Performance Is So Random but So Catchy

Mixing Florida Georgia Line and The Chainsmokers wouldn't necessarily be the first musical combination that would come to our minds, but both groups proved how catchy their collaboration actually is at the CMT Awards on Wednesday night. They joined each other on the outdoor stage and belted out their made-for-Summer hit, "Last Day Alive," which was an energizing change of pace from Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban's beautiful acoustic set. Pour yourself a nice, big glass of wine, and check it out above.

All the Reasons Wonder Woman Goes by the Name Diana Prince

Just like Batman, Wonder Woman has a secret identity. Unlike Batman, the reason behind her alter-ego isn't as cut and dry. Since Wonder Woman is one of DC's longest running comic book superheroes, the Amazonian's identity and origin have gone through a number of changes over the years, both big and small. One of them happens to be why, and how, she acquired the name Diana Prince.

In Patty Jenkins's Wonder Woman, which blends Wonder Woman's origin stories from the comics, Princess Diana (Gal Gadot) gains her civilian identity when she's introducing herself to a stranger in London with her full title ("Diana, Princess of Themyscira, Daughter of Hippolyta"), but Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) cuts her off mid-sentence, leaving her with "Diana, Prince-". In the Earth One and Earth Two iterations of the character in the comics, Diana Prince is actually a nurse in WWII who Wonder Woman happens to bump into, and realizes they share a number of physical similarities.

Seeing as how they can pass for sisters and conveniently share a similar name, Wonder Woman offers her a large amount of money to disappear. She happily takes it so she can travel to South America to be with her fiancé, Dan White, whose name she eventually takes so that Princess Diana can officially assume her identity. In that timeline, Wonder Woman even takes over Diana Prince's nursing duties and later gets a job as an Air Force secretary. Fortunately no matter what name she's going by, we can all agree that she kicks a hell of a lot of ass, right?

5 Science-Backed Fixes That Will Help You Lose Weight

It's no surprise that the majority of dieters blame a lack of self-control on their failure to reach their feel-great weight. However, if you believe that you've inherited the low willpower gene, think again. In fact, willpower can actually be strengthened with proper training - just like lifting weights can pump up your muscles. And knowing the right exercises for your brain is the key to replenishing this resource.

Ready for the willpower workout? Below are five research-based mental practices that will help improve decision making, conquer cravings, and keep your diet on track.

Eat the Right Carbs

Self-control is in lock step with your blood sugar. Research from Florida State University reported that when blood sugar levels plummet, you lose your ability to resist temptation. In order to keep blood sugars in check, eat slow-to-digest (or low-glycemic) carbs such as fruit, veggies, beans, and whole grains. And keep this tip in mind the next time you decide to indulge on a piece of cake during the impromptu office party: refrain from eating sweets on an empty stomach - this will only result in a quick spike in sugar levels, followed by the dreaded sugar crash.

Out of Sight, Out of Mouth

One of the best ways to keep your ironclad willpower from turning to tin is to steer clear of your downfall foods - meaning your personal "trigger" foods, as well as those universal problematic foods that contain the can't-resist combo of sugar, fat, and salt: French fries, salty snacks, baked goods, ice cream, pizza, and chocolate. Even just being in the presence of these classic comfort food favorites can suck up your self-control. Yet avoiding eye contact will encourage you to stay focused.

Limit Food Media

Studies indicate that watching food advertisements can light up certain areas of our brain, which in turn, heighten our cravings. Also, similar research states the same reaction takes place in our brain when we watch cooking shows (sorry, Rachael Ray!) or spend time scrolling through drool-worthy food images and recipes on Instagram, Pinterest, or Facebook. So in other words, stop with the #foodporn.

Plan Ahead

Here's a little food for thought: researchers at Cornell University reveal that we are faced with about 220 food-related decisions every day, so the more of those choices that are left to chance (Which cereal should I buy? Do I want a turkey sandwich or salad for lunch?), the quicker you'll deplete your daily willpower - and the more likely you are to overeat. Put an end to the on-the-spot picks and plan your meals a day (or even two!) in advance. And always shop with a grocery list - this simple strategy will help limit the number of times you need to tap into your willpower.

Get Enough Shut-Eye

Lack of sleep - whether it's due to interrupted sleep, a sleep disorder, or just being a night owl - is a willpower wrecker. Studies consistently show that slumber-deprived subjects, which is generally less than seven to eight hours a night for most adults, consume more calories, have increased cravings for junk food (like sweet, salty, or high-fat treats), and are more likely to be overweight or obese. When you disrupt your sleep, you disrupt your strength.

A Deaf Singer's Emotional Performance Leaves America's Got Talent Audience Sobbing

Another day, another amazing America's Got Talent audition. Following the internet's fascination with pint-sized ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer, singer Mandy Harvey performed an original song on Tuesday night that reduced practically everyone in the building (and also out of the building, including yours truly) to tears. Before she sang, the 29-year-old introduced herself to judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel, and with the help of an interpretor, explained that she completely lost her hearing a decade earlier because of a connective tissue disorder.

"I've been singing since I was 4," she said. "I left music after I lost my hearing, and then figured out how to get back into singing with muscle memory, using visual tuners and trusting my pitch." Then, she pulled out her ukulele and blew everyone away with her song, "Try," which she wrote to inspire herself not to give up on music. As soon as she finished, Cowell, who it's worth noting has never looked happier during an audition, immediately gave her a standing ovation and pushed the coveted Golden Buzzer. Grab a box of tissues (yes, a whole box) and watch her performance above!
