How Beachbody Helped This Mom of 2 Lose 155 Pounds

As a mom of two and a teacher's aide, Rachelle has always put others before herself. But after hitting 300 pounds, she knew that in order to take care of the people she loved, she had to get healthy and take care of herself first.

Rachelle: Before

She took action, knowing she wanted to take better care of little boys, and the results have payed off! Rachelle has lost 155 pounds overall - 120 in just eight months - by eating healthy with a portion-control system and by using Beachbody's 21 Day Fix.

POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?

Rachelle Hosick I knew that I needed to lose weight and get healthy for quite some time. I had always said that I would start once I finished off that last bottle of soda or that last bag of junk food, but I always just bought more. The day that I decided I was really ready, I had just sat down with a huge glass of soda and a plate overflowing with junk food as I watched my two boys playing on the floor. I remember thinking that if I didn't do something, I wouldn't be around to raise them.

I remember thinking that this wasn't the kind of mom I wanted to be; my kids deserve to have a mom that actually plays with them. That my kids and my husband deserved better. That I deserved better than how I felt. So instead of finishing off the soda and the junk food, I got up and dumped the soda down the drain and tossed all the junk food I had become addicted to in the trash. I knew it was better to "waste" all that food than to continue wasting my life.

PS: Was there one thing in particular that contributed to your weight gain?

I was pretty heavy from like fifth to ninth grade, to the point where at my ninth grade school checkup, the doctor wanted me to go see a nutritionist to tell me how to eat. I got involved in tennis in high school and lost the weight.

I was perfectly fine with my weight and health until 2007 when I got my wedding dress in and it didn't fit with only like a month to go till my wedding. So instead of altering the dress to fit, I basically starved myself to fit into it. It worked . . . the dress fit on my wedding day, but I just went crazy with food after that. Like I was free to eat whatever I wanted and I was going to do it.

It didn't help that at the same time I went from being super active to basically inactive as I got a job in a customer service call center where I sat the entire day. I didn't get home till 8:30 at night when my husband and I would eat and then go to sleep. Of course, I didn't feel like cooking, so we ate fast food a lot of the time. The weight just piled on.

PS: What drew you to Beachbody specifically?

RH: I decided to give Beachbody a try after my sister told me I needed to (and went as far as to loan me her 21 Day Fix set). I had seen her have great success with it, so I knew it worked for her.

When I started out on my journey, I began walking and trying to eat what I thought was healthy. I lost about 15 pounds but got super bored and began falling back into my old habits. Beachbody had an answer to all of my excuses. My excuses for not working out had always been that I couldn't afford a gym membership and if I did find some way to get one, I didn't have anyone to watch my boys. Thanks to Beachbody and 21 Day Fix, I can work out in the comfort of my own home.

"This wasn't the kind of mom I wanted to be. My kids and my husband deserved better. I deserved better."

PS: What's your favorite way to work out?

RH: I love being able to go into my son's tiny little room and push play for 30 minutes and know that I got an amazing workout in. In the beginning, I used DVDs, but now I have the all-access pass to Beachbody on Demand (BOD). Thanks to BOD, I can now do my workout wherever I want. I love being able to take my laptop or phone outside while my boys play in the yard or ride their bikes in the driveway while I get a quick workout in. Sometimes they'll even join me.

PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?

RH: I work out every single day. Twice a week I'll have an active recovery day where I'll do yoga or Pilates.

Rachelle After

PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?

RH: When I don't want to get my workout in, I always try to get someone to do it with me. It is always super fun when I get my husband to join me! But the thing is, workouts don't have to be exciting. I'm not one who loves working out. If I was, I probably would have never gotten as big and unhealthy as I did. For me, I have made workouts a nonnegotiable. No matter what, I will always get a workout in. That's what keeps me on track.

PS: How much weight have you lost?

RH: I lost 15 pounds prior to Beachbody and lost another 140 pounds with Beachbody (using 21 Day Fix and 21 Day Fix Extreme).

PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?

RH: The first non-scale victory for me was being able to shop in the regular-size section at the store. I was so excited being able to buy my first size-16 pants!

PS: How do you track your weight loss?

RH: I weigh myself every morning to keep me accountable. I also constantly compare my body now to old pictures to see what kind of changes I am making.

PS: What's a typical day of meals and snacks?

RH: I pretty much each every two to three hours. I start every morning with a hot cup of green tea. This is my typical eating schedule:

  • 7 a.m.- Breakfast: Usually Shakeology
  • 9:30 a.m. - Snack: Baby carrots
  • 11:30 a.m. - Lunch: Chicken with sweet potato, butternut squash, or steamed broccoli
  • 1 p.m. - Snack: Apple with peanut butter
  • 3:30 p.m. - Snack: Cheese or almonds, hard-boiled eggs
  • 5:30 p.m. - Dinner: Whatever I fix for my family; usually I'll save a carb, protein, and veggie for dinner

PS: Do you count calories? What's the range of calories you eat per day?

RH: No, I do not count calories. There's no need to count calories since I have the portion-fix containers. I just keep track of how many containers I have to use each day.

Rachelle: Before and After

PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?

RH: Baby carrots, seasonal fruit, Greek yogurt, eggs, grilled chicken, and steam-fresh veggies are always on hand.

PS: How do you strategize for meals out?

RH: I usually get on the restaurant's website and take a look at their menu and find something I'd like to have an plan my day for it (so I don't go over my containers). If the restaurant doesn't have a website, I'll usually just plan for a carb, veggie, and protein. The thing with eating out is don't be afraid to make special requests. Ask for the sauce on the side, or ask to only season with black pepper to avoid a lot of salt.

"Don't wait finish that last drop of soda, don't finish that last bit of junk food, don't wait for Monday . . . go start now!"

PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?

RH: Beachbody's programs are the reason I am where I am today. They provided me with everything I needed to succeed and not only reach my goals, but surpass them. They provide workouts I can do in the comfort of my own home, give me a meal plan to teach me how to truly eat to fuel my body, and offer a great support system through challenge groups. I would definitely recommend giving Beachbody a try!

If you're just starting out on your journey to health, my biggest tip is to set a huge overall goal you'd like to accomplish and then set a small one to work toward. My big goal was to fit into my old wedding dress by my 10-year wedding anniversary. I didn't necessarily know what weight that would be, but I figured it would mean losing at least 100 pounds as I couldn't even get my dress on my body when I started.

My smaller goals along the way consisted of being in smaller-size jeans of different weight milestones like lose 25 or 50 pounds. And when I reached those goals, and only when I reached those small goals, I had a cheat meal. It isn't easy, but nothing worth having is ever easy! Set those small goals and just start! Don't wait finish that last drop of soda, don't finish that last bit of junk food, don't wait for Monday . . . go start now!

13 Lessons We Learned From Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead

A single mom leaves her five kids home with a geriatric babysitter when she leaves town on a three-month vacation to Australia: what could possibly go wrong? The premise for Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead may not be the most plausible, but it does make for one of our favorite '90s teen movies. After her babysitter dies suddenly of a heart attack, Sue Ellen Crandell (played expertly by Christina Applegate in her first movie role) has to give up her fantasy of hanging on the beach with her friends all Summer and scams her way into a job at an LA fashion company so she can make money and take care of her younger siblings. There's comedy, a love interest, and lots of horrifying shoulder pads, but most of all, there are many life lessons to glean. The movie celebrated its 26th anniversary this year, and in honor, we're looking back on the most memorable things we learned from Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.

Donald Glover's Spider-Man: Homecoming Cameo Hints at an Ominous Fate For Peter Parker

Spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming below!

After months of speculation, we finally, officially know who Donald Glover plays in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the revelation will likely leave fans of the comics with their own spidey senses tingling. Not only could Glover's character mean there's potentially a second Spider-Man floating around somewhere in NYC, but it may also mean that the current iteration of everyone's favorite web-slinger - Tom Holland's Peter Parker - is not long for this world. See, while we're happy to see Glover join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in any capacity, his cameo does hint at the introduction of Miles Morales, who eventually takes over for Spider-Man in the comic books after the death of Peter Parker. To be fair, Sony has already confirmed that a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is on the way, meaning there will be plenty of Holland on our screens in the coming years. But does this mean the franchise will end with Peter's death?

The Atlanta actor pops up in his brief (and highly enjoyable) cameo as a pretty chill small-time criminal named Aaron Davis. In the Ultimate Spider-Man series (which is set in an alternate universe where Peter dies after a fight with the Green Goblin), Aaron Davis is a career criminal and burglar known as the Prowler. Oh, and he's also the uncle of Miles, the Brooklyn teen who gets bitten by the same kind of genetically engineered spider that gave his predecessor his powers (which was accidentally stolen by Aaron from Oscorp), who eventually starts swinging through NYC himself. Though Miles and Aaron are initially close, their relationship takes a nosedive when the young superhero discovers his uncle's double life as a serious criminal and their bond deteriorates.

This, of course, is not at all featured in Homecoming. In fact, the movie just barely acknowledges the existence of Miles with a throwaway line that Glover delivers so nonchalantly it might sail over your head altogether.

In the film, we meet Aaron as he's attempting to close a deal with some members of Vulture's crew who are hocking weapons made from alien tech they discovered amid the detritus of the Battle of New York. Spider-Man shows up and derails the meeting and stops Aaron afterwards to interrogate him (awkwardly) about his connection to Vulture. Aaron claims he's not looking to hurt anybody and only wants the equipment to spy on someone, because, after all, he wouldn't want his nephew to run into any of this dangerous alien weaponry in the city.

As far as Marvel Easter eggs go, this is definitely one of the cooler ones. It's not only a wink to fans of Ultimate Spider-Man, but also to the people who campaigned for Glover to play the new Spider-Man back when the reboot was first announced (Glover voiced Miles in two episodes of the animated Ultimate Spider-Man series in 2015). He might not have joined the MCU as the character people were hoping for, but his arrival is exciting nonetheless. As for Miles? Well, we're probably not going to see him for quite some time, so Peter Parker can rest easy in his spidey suit.

3 of the Most Effective Weight-Loss Tips, From Real Success Stories

Weight loss is hard. It's not black and white, and it's certainly not cookie cutter. There are struggles, setbacks, and times you might wonder, "Why did I even start? Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?" But with these stories from women who achieved their success in all different ways, we can gain a strong sense of hope.

There's a different approach for everyone, and each woman's winning combination of tools is different. That said, there are a few common themes that we've noticed again and again, ones that you can implement no matter what your body type, habits, or goals. We've interviewed women who have lost between 25 and 225 pounds; their three best tips (collectively) were about movement, mindful eating, and support systems. We'll let them tell you exactly how these things worked in their journeys and how each contributed to their overall success.

Move More

Though some women really went hard and opted for six or more days of workouts, not everyone needed such a strenuous schedule to lose the weight. It's just about moving more. For Katie who lost over 200 pounds and Brooke and Hailey who each lost over 100, each of them aimed to reach 10,000 steps per day, tracking with either a Fitbit or a phone app. Setting an attainable goal that equates to just walking a little bit extra is attainable and can add up over time. In fact, it's one of celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak's best weight-loss tips - and these women are living proof that it works.

"I have actually found that exercise replaced food as an excellent way to relieve stress and make me feel in control."

If you're already somewhat active, adding in some more workouts is key. For Kara (who lost 40 pounds), her key was variety. "I am a member at a couple of local fitness studios in our neighborhood that offer Spin, barre, yoga, and circuit classes; therefore, on the days we work our legs and booty, I'll take a barre class with a friend. If cardio is on the schedule, I'll take a Spin class. I work out five to six days a week."

The more you move, the more it'll become part of your daily routine. "I love working out and have actually found that it replaced food as an excellent way to relieve stress and make me feel in control," said Hailey. "On an average week, I work out four to six times and try to keep it as fresh and engaging as possible."

Eat Mindfully

Most of the women we talked to who had accomplished major weight loss attributed their healthier weight to more mindful eating and conscious choices. "Preparing meals at home is one of the most effective ways to manage weight," said Brooke, but she also mentioned that "it has to be easy and enjoyable or it won't happen consistently."

Caitlin, who lost 25 pounds, is also more deliberate with her food and conscious of how her body feels when she eats. "I try to allow myself to eat out and trust myself to choose options that I know will allow me to feel good afterwards and to stop when I'm full. I try to just check in with myself like, 'Do you really want that?'" Kara had similar sentiments. She told POPSUGAR that she focuses on healthier choices but still loves food, so she monitors how her choices make her feel physically. "If I do indulge in a heavy, unhealthy meal, my body now reacts poorly, as it's become so accustomed to clean ingredients; therefore, I find myself struggling to gather energy or I'll feel just plain sick, so I've really stopped eating anything I know is going to make me feel sluggish."

"It's all about knowing what is good or bad for your body, being aware of what you're consuming, said Kat, who lost 40 pounds. "As long as it's healthy calories, the weight will come off." Speaking of healthy calories, part of deliberate and mindful eating includes being educated and learning as much as you can about your food. Taylor, a woman who lost about 25 pounds, used that education as an advantage in her weight-loss journey. "I am aware of more calorie-dense options like the healthy fats in almond butter, coconut oil, and avocado, and I am mindful to keep those in moderation."

Find Motivation in Community

For Becca, it was Weight Watchers that helped with her 100-pound weight loss. She used the community and the app as a way to stay on track. "You can see amazing before and after pictures, recipes, and tips," she said. "It really helps to keep me motivated."

Brooke found strength in the BBG community, saying, "It's empowering to be vulnerable about our flaws, share our goals, and cheer each other on." She noted that before finding the other women through BBG, that she "carried around a tremendous amount of shame" about her weight. "It was liberating to let go of that and realize that I wasn't alone."

"It was liberating to let go of that shame and realize that I wasn't alone."

Ensuring that you have that support and don't feel isolated is paramount to the success you'll see on your own journey. Kara told us that her "accountability partner" is the person who keeps her in check and keeps her going to "a 6 a.m. Spin or circuit class one to two times a week." Whether it's a best friend, significant other, co-worker, parent, or family member, you need to find someone who can hold you accountable and help you get through any and all setbacks.

For both Caitlin and Cait (who has yet another amazing weight-loss success story), that support came from Tone It Up. Upon finding the community on Instagram, Cait said, "It was the first time I realized maybe I can do this, and it doesn't have to be torture. These girls were just like me." That identity and support helped Cait reach her goals. "I started forming new habits, pushing myself to new heights, trying new workouts, sometimes failing, sometimes shining, but always being supported through my ups and downs. I loved supporting others and loved seeing the girls cheer me on!"

Caitlin said that "the TIU community was a total support system for me and still is," noting that it extended well beyond her weight loss. "The women in the community are incredible and will support, encourage, and listen as you go through whatever journey you're on. These women share through pregnancies, losses, marriages. . . . It's not just weight, but the emotional factors that usually are the drivers of our bad habits. I went to the Tone It Up retreat 2015 where I got to meet a bunch of the women I felt I already knew from following them on Instagram, and I am so happy I can now call them my friends."

Genius Hack Will Change How You Get Your Kid to Comply With "5 More Minutes"

We've all been there: you're leaving a play date, the park, or a birthday party, and you tell your child "five more minutes, then we're leaving." And we all know that it never works. Sure, you can set a timer to help your child understand the concept of time, or maybe they're older and totally understand how long five minutes is, but that doesn't make them care any more.

However, one parent shared on Reddit the way they get their child to comply with the "five more minutes" warning by making it more tangible and understandable, even somewhat like a reward.

"When taking young children to the playground, instead of saying they have five minutes left, tell them they can go on five more 'rides,'" user Lineyc wrote in their post, saying they have been successfully doing this with their son for over two years. "This gives them something visual to work with and helps stop tantrums. Also helps with numbers when counting down to the last ride."

This can totally be used in any situation no matter what they're doing, playing, or watching. So genius!

7 Things People Who Lose Weight Do Every Day

Big changes can be made from small but smart habits - this includes weight loss! The American Institute for Cancer Research recently shared its best tips for healthy weight loss, and we couldn't agree with them more. In fact, we've seen dozens of success stories of people who have implemented these tips and habits. Here's how they work and how you can apply them to your life.

1. Set Small Goals

Lee Jordan didn't lose 300 pounds by saying, "I'm going to lose 300 pounds." His first goal? "Walking down the hall for 30 seconds." At 450 pounds, Lee described a short walk down the hall as "the Olympics." But by setting small goals, little by little, he lost an absolutely jaw-dropping amount of weight and saved his life.

"If your resolutions are overly ambitious or vague, you may find yourself overwhelmed and slipping up early in the year," said AICR in a press release. "Make concrete, measurable goals and schedule tasks into your day to help you achieve them."

A woman named Becca who lost over 100 pounds said she would've laughed at you years ago if you'd told her she'd be a half-marathoner. She started with the small goal of being able to run for an entire commercial break of a TV program, slowly building up and adding one minute at a time to her PR, before doing 5Ks and half marathons.

Set small goals for yourself daily that you know are achievable and within reach. Whether it's "add one more minute to my exercise time" or "make one healthy recipe today," one small positive action begets another.

2. Eat Veggies

Another woman who lost over 100 pounds also did so by making small changes. Brooke added a green vegetable to every single meal throughout the day, and her consistency with adding those nutrients into her diet helped make a significant impact on her overall habits and her health.

We noticed that this addition of veggies is a major habit among nearly everyone we've ever interviewed about weight loss; experts also agree it's the best way to lose weight. Some of the people we interviewed admitted that they had never tried certain veggies before their weight-loss journey began. "I found out that I love asparagus," said Amanda, who lost 86 pounds. "I'd never had it before! How did I go my whole life without eating asparagus?"

The AICR said: "Instead of denying yourself the foods you love, focus on replacing some with nutritious, healthful foods." Veggies are low in calories yet will keep you full. "Filling up on these can help curb your appetite while you're watching your weight." Whether you're making swaps throughout the day like Kara, who lost 30 pounds in four months (she has spinach in her morning smoothies, big salads for lunch, and zucchini noodles for dinner), or finishing your day with tons of vegetables for dinner like Taylor (who also lost 30 pounds), this small choice can help you lose major weight.

3. Move

It's no secret that more movement leads to more weight-loss success. "Regular physical activity [is] a key component when trying to maintain or lose weight," said AICR. And movement doesn't necessarily mean gym time.

Katie lost over 200 pounds, and her workout routine is simply walking. Brooke (mentioned earlier) hit her goal by setting a Fitbit step goal of 10,000 steps a day and sticking to that consistently.

If you're ready for more than walking and hoping to build muscle tone and get strong, too, start experimenting with different types of exercise. Courtney and Caitlin work out six to seven days a week and lost 75 and 25 pounds, respectively.

4. Practice Portion Control

This daily habit takes some consciousness and mindfulness when it comes to eating. "Portion sizes are big in America," said AICR. And if you dial in your portions, you could shed some serious weight. "Recent studies suggest that several strategies using portion awareness can all result in meaningful weight loss over a year's time."

Although 55-year-old Luz had been active her whole life, she was about 150 pounds overweight. It wasn't until she learned to get control of her overeating that she lost a significant amount of weight. During chemo treatment for cervical cancer, Luz learned to control portions, which created lasting, healthy habits contributing to her massive weight loss.

Slow down, be conscious of how much you're eating, put your fork down in between bites, and don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach!

5. Don't Drink Calories

Is your vice sugary soda or alcohol? Time to cut ties. "Sugary soda and alcohol both add extra calories without beneficial nutrients," said AICR. "For each sugary drink that you swap out for water or another zero-calorie choice, you'll save 100 to 300 calories. Plus, alcohol by itself is linked to increased risk for several cancers, including breast and colorectal."

While Lee Jordan was on his 300-pound weight-loss journey, he noted that cutting sugary soda out was a crucial piece of his weight-loss puzzle. We also spoke with a woman named Brittany who before her wedding made no changes to her diet or exercise routine but just cut out alcohol - and she lost between five and 10 pounds in a matter of two months.

It may be a tough change at first, but take Amanda's word for it when she said it gets easier: "Your taste buds completely change once you stop eating all the added sugar." Try swapping in as much water as possible, as staying hydrated can also help you feel satiated.

6. Snack Better

People who lose weight don't have to cut out snacks, they just snack smarter. Celebrity personal trainer Chase Weber credits healthy snacks as a way to prevent sugar binges, saying, "if you get into a routine of reaching for these options, you'll avoid the pitfalls of sugary snacks [and] deceptive 'nutrition' shakes."

Follow Kara's lead (remember all her veggies throughout the day?): snack on veggies and hummus or even an apple with peanut butter. These healthier snacks (with a good balance of healthy fats and protein) will keep you from making poorer food choices.

7. Balance Cardio With Weight Training

A mix of cardio with resistance and weight training is the most effective way to lose weight with exercise. The AICR said, "working strength training into your schedule a few times a week can help you build muscle and burn calories. It's a great way to mix up your fitness routine and prevent injuries."

Speaking of mixing it up, a well-rounded fitness routine was the key to weight-loss success for Sarah and Caitlin. In fact, many of the women (and men) we spoke with credited a varied exercise schedule for their shed pounds. Brittany Dawn noted that "things clicked for me when I got into weightlifting" - and she lost 50 pounds.

7 of the Best Foods to Fight Inflammation

Whether it's aches and pains, stiffness, headaches, indigestion, stomachaches, yeast imbalances, viruses, low energy, weight gain, or free-radical damage, it often goes back to two things: acidity and inflammation.

To understand how acidity plays a role in producing bodily inflammation, you first have to understand pH, or the measure of a solution's acidity or alkalinity from 0 to 14, 0 being the most acidic, and 14 being the most alkaline. Our bodies need a very specific pH balance to function and maintain homeostasis. Even slight changes to the pH of our blood, for instance, can be extremely problematic.

Our grocery stores and diets are overrun with highly acidic foods. Caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, sugars, refined flours, pasteurized dairy, and animal protein are all highly acidic forming in the body, and if you are eating these on a regular basis, chances are you may experience at least some sort of chronic symptom of inflammation. Even natural processes of the body produce acidic byproducts. Stress also contributes greatly to an acidic environment.

So what can we do? How do we reverse the effects of these highly acidic foods and actions? Just as food plays a role in producing an acidic environment, it can be transformative and healing to the body, reducing inflammation and creating an environment that supports health.

The goal should be to consume 80 percent alkaline foods and 20 percent acidic foods. Not all acidic foods are unhealthy necessarily; however, extremely acidic foods like those stated above should be greatly minimized. Fresh fruits and vegetables that have been lightly seasoned and cooked should be the focus of your diet.

Below is a list of some of the most anti-inflammatory foods your should be adding to your diet daily to restore alkalinity and relieve inflammation. Fight inflammation in the kitchen, not the pharmacy, with:

Green Leafy Vegetables

Leafy greens are full of nutrition, loaded with alkalizing minerals, phytonutrients, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids. Load up on kale, chard, spinach, lettuces, bok choy, etc, daily. In addition, fruits and vegetables in general should make up most of your plate at every meal.

Turmeric

This South Asian rhizome has long been used and prized for its anti-inflammatory properties. Today, you can find it just about anywhere - in juices and smoothies to supplements and teas. The main compound responsible for its anti-inflammatory benefits, curcumin, has been used to fight simple colds and flus, Alzheimer's disease, liver damage, prevent cancer, and of course relieve inflammation.

Fish Oils

By now most of us know the importance of omega-3 fatty acids and their role in relieving inflammation. The best source for these fatty acids is fish; however, some sources are better than others. Top of the food chain, large ocean fish can contain high levels of mercury and other heavy metals. Stick to wild salmon, or smaller, oilier fish such as sardines and anchovies. Fish oils can also be taken as a supplement. I recommend taking fermented cod liver oil. In addition to omega 3 fatty acids, it also supplies necessary D and A vitamins in a more bioavailable form.

Berries

Berries in general are lower in sugar than most fruit and contain large quantities in inflammation-reducing antioxidants. Blueberries and dark-colored berries especially, due to their high levels of the antioxidant quercetin, and are especially anti-inflammatory.

Walnuts

Walnuts are not only an excellent source of protein, they are also a source of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E. Consuming walnuts regularly may help to support brain health and function and reduce inflammation throughout the body.

Bone Broth

There is plenty of reason to get behind bone broth. Full of core and essential nutrients and alkalizing vitamins and minerals, bone broth supplies a healthy dose of easily assimilated nutrients from calcium, magnesium, silicon, and phosphorus, as well as collagen, hyaluronic acid, protein, and connective tissues to aid in reducing inflammation and supporting the joints, skin, and bones.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a highly anti-inflammatory fat that is made up of mostly MCFAs, or medium-chain fatty acids, which are easier to digest and not readily stored as fat. In addition, coconut oil contains antimicrobial and antifungal properties from caprylic, lauric, and capric acids, aiding in reducing inflammation, lowering high blood pressure, improving energy, and boosting the immune system.

This CrossFit Workout May Sound Insane, but It's Totally Doable

Burpees aren't fun - we know this. But they work the entire body, and that's one of the reasons CrossFit coach and competitor Dani Horan of Champlain Valley CrossFit is suggesting this simple yet grueling workout.

The Workout: Complete 100 burpees as quickly as you can.

Here's how to do a basic burpee:

  • From standing, lower into a crouching squat with your hands on the floor.
  • Do a squat thrust by jumping your feet back, simultaneously bending the elbows behind you, touching your chest to the floor.
  • As you jump the feet forward to the hands, straighten the arms and come back to into a squat.
  • Do an explosive jump straight up, getting as much height as you can.

Yep, that's it. One hundred burpees all at once. You'll get a total-body workout in about 10 minutes, and it's an awesome way to get your heart rate up. But what makes this workout the definition of CrossFit is that it's mostly mental. Yeah, your arms and legs might get tired from burpee after burpee (after burpee!), but mostly it's your mind that will keep saying it wants to stop.

It's great for those training for a race or a fitness competition to practice pushing yourself no matter what and believing you can do it. And though it may not be that fun, you're going to feel so proud once you get to the last one!

If doing this total-body move is tough for you, here are four moves you can do to build up to a burpee. If this many burpees at one time seems completely crazy, here's a four-week workout plan to build up to 100 burpees. And if you love burpees and want more, try this burpee challenge that involves five different variations of burpees.

Nutritionists Reveal What to Eat at Every Meal to Lose Weight

When you set your mind to dropping a few pounds and see the proof when you step on the scale, it's a pretty amazing feeling. Make it happen by following this formula designed by two nutritionists - Stephanie Clarke, RD, and Willow Jarosh, RD, of C&J Nutrition - on what to eat every day for breakfast, snacks, lunch, and dinner.

3 Things You Need to Grasp in Order to Lose Weight For Good

You've been trying to lose weight for months or maybe even years. You finally drop enough to fit into those jeans you wore in college, but sooner or later, you can't even slip them over your thighs again. Why does losing weight have to be so hard? Here are some difficult things you'll need to swallow in order to lose the weight and keep it off for good.

Diets Aren't the Answer

While many people lose weight ditching carbs or going on a liquid diet, these methods can't last forever. These diets are often not nutritionally sound or so restrictive you end up binging on all the foods you crave. Plus, when you hit your goal weight and go back to your old eating habits, the weight is bound to come back.

Slimming down and being able to maintain this smaller version of yourself is all about making a lifestyle change. That means figuring out a healthy diet that can be maintained for the rest of your life. What's been proven to work is a diet full of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. Of course you're allowed to cheat every once in a while - and it can actually help diminish cravings - but indulgences should be in moderation. It'll take some getting used to, but soon you'll adapt to your new healthy way of eating and wonder how you ever used to down cheeseburgers, soda, and cookies every day.

Counting Calories Is a Must

Losing weight is about basic math: calories in cannot exceed the amount of calories the body uses up. And to lose weight, you'll need to create a calorie deficit. Counting calories may seem strict, but if you don't keep track of how much you eat, you may never reach your goal weight. Start by talking with your doctor about how much weight you want to lose, and he or she can help you figure out an appropriate daily calorie amount.

Many find success writing down their daily diet in a food journal, or with a weight-loss app, which logs the calorie amounts for food eaten. If you like to cook, plug your recipe into this Calorie Count tool and you can keep track of how many calories your favorite mac n' cheese contains.

You'll need ways to keep track of portion sizes too, and here are some great products you can use at home and on the go. You'll also want to arm yourself with calorie-saving tricks for eating out, when you hit happy hour, and during the weekend, as well as learn some creative food-swapping tricks to save calories.

Walking Isn't Enough

A healthy diet is key to losing weight, but if you have more than a few pounds to lose, that alone isn't the most effective way to get you to your goal weight. You'll have to incorporate exercise as well, and I don't mean just a walk around the block. Most recommendations say that to lose weight, you must exercise for at least an hour a day, five times a week. We're talking the kind that gets your heart rate up such as running, biking, or a cardio class at the gym. An hour may seem like a lot, but once you carve out that time in your schedule, it'll be something you look forward to every day. If boredom is your complaint, here are some ways to switch up your cardio routine and keep you excited about working out.

Aside from burning calories, exercising will give you muscles, which boosts your metabolism and helps you burn more calories. It'll give your body some definition as well, making weight loss even more noticeable. Exercising can also be a way to feel good about indulging - if you go on a two-hour hike, you'll know you can enjoy dessert after dinner without a side of guilt. Exercising regularly is just as important as eating right, and once you adapt both to your life, losing weight and keeping it off will be a breeze.

7 Times Emily Ratajkowski and Kendall Jenner's Bikinis Matched - and No One Saw It Coming

Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski have a few things in common. They both have millions of followers on Instagram, are big time supermodels, live in LA, and, oh, they have the same taste in swimsuits. But you wouldn't know that without our help since Kendall doesn't post as many bikinigrams as Emily does.

But when Kendall does flaunt a swimsuit, it's usually right up Emily's alley. The two ladies both gravitate toward sexy silhouettes - the more skin revealed the better. So how many times have the two matched in their bikinis? We counted seven (so far). Read on to see the photos yourself because you probably missed their #twinning moments. Wedding Guest Shoes That Will Save Your Feet During Those Beach Ceremonies

You've been invited to watch your friend tie the knot and the invitation clearly states that it's going to be a beachside affair. Finding the dress shouldn't be that difficult - you can never go wrong with a maxi - but shoes can be a struggle. While you certainly could get away with wearing a wedge to an oceanside wedding, you'll likely end up being an armhanger . . . someone who cannot let go of their date's arm for fear of careening over and plummeting into the sand. Play it safe and stick to sandals. You'll get tons of compliments, you'll be able to stand on your own two feet, and you'll be able to wear them throughout the season.

Small Bust? Shop 16 Figure-Flattering Suits to Enhance What You've Got

Swimsuit shopping is a unique battle for anyone, especially if you're self-conscious about being smaller up top. Arm yourself with tricks and you'll be able to stroll seaside with confidence.

  • Flaunt what you have, and fake what you don't. If you're looking to create more cleavage, opt for an underwire bra top (or padding). A structured top will shape what you have, while padded cups can actively fake more if that's the look you're after.
  • Distract, distract, distract. Ruffles, bold prints, and splashes of color are all far busier than a simple, solid suit and can claim an onlooker's attention.
  • Embrace what you can wear. Tiny tops and unique shapes are cute but often spell disaster for women with larger chests. Trendy styles are easy to conquer when support isn't mandatory, so go ahead and play around with fun cuts.

Now that you're up to speed, just read on to shop the cutest suits for small-busted beach babes.

Bath and Body Works's New Soap Reminds Us of Silly String From the '90s

When I first unpacked my bag of brightly colored Bath and Body Works products, my coworker and I eagerly examined each fruity smelling, brightly colored bottle. The fun was momentarily interrupted when she accidentally doused me in its silly-string style soap. We both stood there with our mouths open for a second before I burst into laughter as she apologized profusely. From that moment, we knew that The Bath and Body Works Shapeable Soaps ($17) are nothing if not entertaining.

The soap comes in a bottle with an aerosol pump, revealing a quick and powerful spray of moldable foam. It's similar to many of the products our moms used to buy to get us to take baths as children - and we're not complaining. It makes us wonder why we ever stopped playing with soap in the shower.

Fortunately, Bath and Body Works has reinvigorated our love of good, clean fun. The Shapeable Soap comes in three delicious scents and colors inspired by summertime. The blue soap, called Cabana Breeze will make you think of suntan lotion and cotton towels. It contains notes of starfruit, banana leaves, and coconut. The pink soap is called Poolside Pop and gives a nod to fruity drinks with little umbrellas. This soap is fragranced with lime, kiwi, and cucumber. It is the sweetest of the bunch, smelling remarkably like Victoria's Secret Bombshell perfume. Last up is the green soap, called Liquid Sunshine. It's inspired by sunny skies and the shade of a palm tree and is a sensory experience of bamboo, citrus, and jasmine.

All three soaps are surprisingly moldable, allowing you to stack the foam on top of itself and shape it with your hands. The product expands after a few minutes, becoming closer to a shaving-cream consistency. We suggest you pick up these soaps on your next trip to Bath and Body Works, and prepare to have a lot of fun.

What Happened After a Cop Pulled 1 Woman Over For an Illegal Turn Is Going Viral

While Candace Tongate was working a night shift, she spotted a woman making an illegal U-turn. This police officer from Georgia went to pull over the driver, but as she drove up behind her, another car pulled up.

Kevin Williams stopped his car behind Candace and explained that his wife was about to give birth to their third baby. Luckily for the U-turn offender, Candace let her go with a warning and immediately went to help his wife, Letoya. At this point, the mom was in active labor in the backseat and Candace could already see the baby's head.

As 911 operators gave Candace directions over the phone, she delivered her first baby on the side of the road. "When I realized it was happening, I couldn't believe I was helping deliver a baby," Candace told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Letoya safely gave birth to baby Rylie just before emergency officials arrived thanks to Candace. "I thought she was a mom with how calm she was handling everything, considering my husband was freaking out and the other officers on scene seemed to be in shock," Letoya told WSBTV.

Candace's partner, Sgt. Stacy Gruber, assisted her with the delivery, and she shared on Facebook that she'll never forget this late-night shift. "Thank you officer Candace Tongate for delivering our princess," Letoya wrote on Facebook. "And thank you to all the other male officers that watched not knowing what to do... but checked on me to make sure I was OK LOL."

Kate Middleton's Wimbledon Dress Was as Sweet as Can Be

After wearing the tweed dress every working woman wants for Summer, Kate Middleton stepped out in another elegant dress. The Duchess of Cambridge chose an ultrafeminine dress by Dolce & Gabbana for Wimbledon.

While Dolce & Gabbana has been facing a lot of negative press recently, Kate looked stunning in the black-and-white polka-dot print dress, and definitely did the design justice. The silk-blend dress featured a scoop neck and cropped sleeves. The duchess finished her look with a pair of Oscar de la Renta earrings and a white structured Victoria Beckham handbag. Seeing Jaclyn Hill's Name Everywhere but Still Don't Know Who She Is? Here's Help

Standing out in a sea of beauty vloggers is no easy feat - but Jaclyn Hill has managed to score herself a partnership deal with Morphe Brushes that's so sweet, she has officially gone from the most spirited YouTube phenom around (with more than 4 million subscribers to her Jaclyn Hill channel) to mainstream makeup celebrity.

If you're still scratching your head over who Hill is - and how her new Morphe Eye Shadow Palette sold out in an insane 48 minutes - let's get to know the 26-year-old professional makeup artist a little better.

Hill was born in Illinois and moved to Tampa, FL, where she still resides with her husband, drummer Jon Hill. She started her YouTube channel in 2011 and quickly gained a name for herself by replicating celebrity makeup looks (Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian among them) and providing incredibly in-depth, easy-to-follow eyebrow, makeup, and hair tutorials. Her skill set is unmatched, but her personable and perky style makes you feel like you're watching a sister or cousin share her favorite secret beauty tips - only, in Hill's case, they just so happen to be the tips of a makeup master.

And then, of course, there are Hill's many collaborations. Her Becca x Jaclyn Hill collection included a palette of intense and highly pigmented highlighter shades, a collab that made perfect sense considering the vlogger's perfectly contoured cheekbones are nearly always in the spotlight in her tutorials and photos. In January, Hill took on a project with Morphe and designed a makeup brush collection. And that proved only the beginning of a fruitful partnership with Morphe - Hill spent two years designing her new, high-quality Morphe eye shadow palette, and the final product appears to be well worth the wait.

The eye shadow palette consists of 35 beautiful shades that run the gamut from earthy bronze tones and an intense cream that can easily double as a highlighter to a deep blue and indigo purple. All of the shades share two things in common: they're wearable but bold and exciting - and beauty enthusiasts seem to agree. After launching the morning of June 21, Hill's palettes sold out in less than one hour.

If that isn't an indicator that we're witnessing a makeup icon in the making, what is?

The Fascinating History Behind Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia and Phish Food

Two of Ben & Jerry's most iconic flavors - Phish Food and Cherry Garcia - continue to remain at the top of the popularity list for more than just being delicious. Flavor Guru Sarah Fidler credits it back to nostalgia. "When people eat ice cream, it often brings them back to memories of their childhood. We love to amplify that experience by providing flavors that make them feel like a kid again," she said. She said many people keep reaching for these same flavors because it's what they ate nonstop as kids, which makes sense considering Phish Food came out 20 years ago this year and Cherry Garcia 30 years ago.

Cherry Garcia, believe it or not, was a fan submission from way back when. Cherry Garcia was originally submitted as an idea from a Grateful Dead fan posted on a bulletin board inside a scoop shop before being written in to the main office in Vermont. Phish Food, on the other hand, was a teamwork between the Vermont-based band Phish and the Vermont-based ice cream maker. These two music-inspired flavors have held strong as favorites with the brand and spread Ben & Jerry's message of peace, love, and ice cream by reminding ice-cream-lovers of the bands they loved (and still love!) years ago and the ice cream they ate when they were young - or young at heart!

This most popular of the fan-suggested flavors, named after The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, is a cherry ice cream that actually started as a vanilla base years ago. Now it's cherry with cherries and chocolate flakes inside. Even better, a Chocolate Cherry Garcia option is now available, though the cherry base is the original - and probably the best.

Phish Food is a chocolate ice cream base with marshmallow swirls, caramel swirls, and fudge fish throughout. Fun fact, though, the marshmallow swirl in Phish Food isn't actually marshmallow at all, it's nougat. And like every Ben & Jerry's flavor, you get a bit of the ooey gooey goodness in every bite.

"People tend to latch onto their favorite flavors from childhood and stay attached for life!" Sarah said of Ben & Jerry's fans continually returning to Cherry Garcia and Phish Food in particular. And she said Ben & Jerry's makes sure to keep the nostalgia factor in mind with all the flavor planning that goes into producing new products. It's no wonder these two flavors in particular keep topping Ben & Jerry's popularity list year after year. We think topping these nostalgic ice creams with a hearty helping of Oreo-O's might be the perfect way to eat like a kid again.

Strength vs. Cardio - Here's How You Should Structure Your Workout

Ask most trainers and they'll tell you that a healthy workout routine consists of strength training, cardio, and rest days, ideally spread throughout the week. But for those of us who love two-a-days or long sessions at the gym or just need to maximize our time, the common question seems to be: Which do I do first, strength or cardio?

This was the burning question I had for Natalie Carey, certified trainer and sports nutritionist at DIAKADI Fitness. "Strength training should always come first - always," Natalie said without skipping a beat. The benefits of structuring your workouts this way are plenty, she added.

Fat Loss

If losing weight is your goal - specifically fat - weight training before your cardio session has major benefits, Natalie said. She explained that strength training increases the "afterburn effect." Your resting metabolism rate is heightened and your body is working to help your muscles recover, which results in an increased calorie burn long after the workout is over. This is an ideal place to be in when you hit your cardio session.

Diana Chaloux, CPT and owner of the online personal-training website HitchFit, is also in agreement. "When you strength train, your body utilizes glycogen (stored carbohydrates) for fuel," Diana said. "So if you strength train first and then do lower-intensity cardio immediately after, which uses fat for fuel, you create an environment in your body conducive to fat metabolism." Basically by the time you get to your cardio session, your body will be primed to burn fat at a higher rate than if you did it the other way around.

Injury Prevention

Compared to cardio, it's much easier to get injured while strength training. And strength training while tired only increases that risk, said Natalie. This is perhaps the biggest reason she advises clients to strength train before a cardio session. "You want to make sure you have the energy to perform the exercises correctly," she said. "Poor form can result in an injury that will get you off track with your training goals." Best to hit up those lunges, kettlebell swings, and push-ups when muscles are fresh!

It's important to note that even if you feel energized and unaffected by your cardio session, your body was still put through the motions and energy stores were depleted. This fatigue may cause your form and focus to be affected in ways you might not be able to notice on your own. Whatever you ultimately decide, be mindful of how you feel and do your best to know when it's time to back off.

Lena Headey Thinks Cersei Will Keep Her Crown on Game of Thrones

With mere days until the penultimate season of Game of Thrones, we're gorging on every available morsel of information. With just the pictures and the trailers alone, there's plenty of fodder to guess at the new season. But what we really need to pay attention to are cast quotes. Luckily for us, Net-a-Porter has a new interview with Lena Headey that's giving us just a little more insight into Cersei's arc for seasons seven and eight. Unsurprisingly, she's completely devastated by everything she's been through, but she's not giving up just yet.

  • On whether Arya or Cersei would win in a fight: "Surely Arya would kill Cersei? Arya's such a little fiend that she would find a way. Look, she f*cking wears people's faces."
  • On Cersei's best season six moment and what season seven holds: "I think the highlight was when she blew up the Great Sept of Baelor, then just enjoyed her wine. And this season coming, because she's lost everything. Whatever was good has been erased and she's a horrible cow to one particular character . . . It's really quite loathsome."
  • On who will win the Iron Throne at the very end: "I think she's already sitting there, isn't she?"

Game of Thrones season seven premieres on July 16.

Does Body Brushing Actually Banish Cellulite For Good?

Image Source: StockSnap User Yoann Boyer

Whether you're a faithful practitioner of Ayurveda or your average beauty-lover who isn't afraid of scraping off every dead skin cell on your body with a frighteningly long brush, you've probably heard about dry brushing. What you may not know is that dry brushing has been touted by some as a way of both preventing and getting rid of cellulite. Now, considering how nearly every woman on Earth has cellulite - which is dimpled skin caused by subcutaneous fat that usually occurs on the thighs, hips, butt, and belly - it's pretty annoying that we don't know a whole lot more about how to get rid of it.

Are we going to pass off dry brushing as the miracle solution? Nope. Are we going to pretend it's unnatural to have cellulite and that we have to make it a lifelong quest to make it vanish? Thankfully, no again.

But because we're eternally curious about beauty trends like dry brushing (assuming you can call an age-old practice trendy), we spoke with a board-certified dermatologist to get the lowdown on whether dry brushing actually helps treat or prevent cellulite so that you maintain realistic expectations.

What Is Body Brushing?

Let's start with the facts: body brushing, or dry brushing, is a routine in which the skin all over your body is brushed in long strokes, usually right before a bath. "The concept of dry brushing is to increase circulation and lymphatic flow in the tissue, to reduce swelling, improve lymphatic drainage, and improve circulation and oxygenation of the skin and tissues," said Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse, a dermatologist in Beverly Hills, CA.

When body brushing, it is recommended that you work a dry body brush in gentle, circular motions beginning at the ankles and up toward the heart. Don't brush too hard over sensitive skin on your abdomen and breasts and, when it comes time to brush your back, brush downward from your neck. Follow your shower with an application of essential oils, like almond or sesame oil.

What Are Some Of the Best Body Brushes?

Selecting a body brush is a personal choice, and it may take a bit of trial and error to find the best one for you. In general, it is recommended that you invest in a brush with natural bristles and a long handle that makes it easy to reach spots like your back. The good news is you needn't spend a small fortune on a quality dry brush.

Some of the most popular choices on Amazon include Wholesome Beauty Dry Skin Body Brush ($10), Touch Me 100% Natural Boar Bristle Body Brush With Contoured Wooden Handle ($6), and TopNotch Body Bath Brush ($9).

Does It Work For Cellulite?

Let's cut to the chase and find out what everyone really wants to know: can dry brushing your thighs, butt, or hips actually decrease or prevent cellulite?

"Cellulite is genetic, and over 90 percent of women have it," Shainhouse said. "Cellulite does occur in women of all weights and body shapes and body fat percentages, and it cannot be prevented. There are no permanent treatments for cellulite, but the appearance can be lessened. Massaging the skin may help swell up the tissue and very temporarily loosen the bands, so that it appears more smooth."

In other words: if you dry brush every day, there's a chance your skin will look overall smoother and plumper, which can reduce the appearance of cellulite - but Shainhouse said solutions like exercise (which can can help firm up muscles so that the overlying fat and tissue doesn't appear as soft and tethered) and Cellfina, an FDA-approved device that cuts the bands under the skin and is effective in reducing specific areas of skin puckering, are likely as good or better at masking cellulite. And you'll have to weigh the benefits of dry brushing against what Shainhouse says are potential drawbacks to the practice.

"While gently massaging the skin and tissues is a good way to help lymphatic flow, repeatedly brushing the skin with a brush is not recommended by dermatologists," Shainhouse said. "Continually rubbing the skin causes inflammation in the skin, and the skin responds by thickening up, to create a better, protective barrier from the outside trauma, aka brushing. Thicker skin will appear purple or hyperpigmented (grey-brown), called macular amyloid. Further rubbing can cause thick scaly plaques or calluses, called lichen simplex chronicus. These effects are not always completely reversible."

With this expert's advice and knowledge in mind, it makes sense to proceed with caution when dry brushing your body. Don't brush too hard, find a better brush if yours proves too abrasive, and - for goodness sake - cut yourself some slack when it comes to dry brushing cellulite away. Using a body brush may temporarily help your skin look healthy and more plump, and if it feels good to you, by all means, make dry brushing a part of your beauty regimen. But if there's no true "cure" for cellulite, the reason could just be because it's a natural skin feature that most of us share.

So, Katy Perry and Cara Delevingne Might Be Long Lost Twins

Even celebrities have celebrity doppelgangers, and Katy Perry caught up with hers during the Chanel Haute Couture show in Paris. When the "Swish Swish" singer, who chopped and bleached her hair back in March, greeted Cara Delevingne at the event, Twitter took note.

That's because both Perry and Delevingne sport a similar short, blonde 'do. There are some serious differences, of course. Perry rocks a Pixie cut, while Delevingne straight up shaved her head back in April. But since everyone loves a good #twinning moment, we'll let Twitter have this one.

So let it be known that it's Katy Perry and Cara Delevingne's world, we're just living in it. (Until Kristen Stewart jumps in with her own frosted tips and joins the fun).

Emily Ratajkowski Just Designed Her Own Very Instagrammable Handbag

Model, actress, and activist Emily Ratajkowski has teamed up with The Kooples for the brand's first-ever bag collection. It should come as no surprise that the handbag is named after Emily, since the model also served as a muse for the brand's Fall 2017 collection.

To announce the exciting collaboration, the founders of The Kooples hosted an event at Hotel de Crillon in Paris. For the event, Emily wore a custom dress designed by the ateliers of the brand. The lace corset dress was created with a skirt made from three types of tulle and a Western leather belt. Emily finished her look with the bag she designed and ankle-strap heels.

The chic purse comes in a boxy silhouette with adjustable straps and gold hardware. The Emily bag, offered in red, black, and taupe, also comes in three different sizes. The small version will retail for $375, while the large version will cost $495. Have a sneak peek at the collection, which hits stores Sept. 1, and preorder the bag online now.

Even Steven Yeun Agrees That Glenn "Never Got His Fair Due" on The Walking Dead

Although fans of The Walking Dead had been theorizing for months that Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) would be the one bashed to smithereens by Negan in the season seven premiere in October 2016, it didn't stop the show's writers (or AMC, for that matter) from getting an intense amount of backlash for the eventual death, which many saw as overly gory and gratuitous. Now, eight months on and with a starring role in Netflix's Okja under his belt, Yeun has had some time to really think about what Glenn's death meant for him, the fans, and the future of The Walking Dead. While sitting down with Vulture's E. Alex Jung, Yeun explained the mixed feelings he still has about the way his character was killed.

"I don't feel like it was too much," he said of Glenn's death. "I'll be honest with you and put a full disclaimer here: I might not be objective, but I truly feel like people didn't know what to do with Glenn. They liked him, they had no problems with him, and people enjoyed him. But they didn't acknowledge the connection people had with the character until he was gone. I look at what happened and I think, That wasn't any more gory than what we've done before, per se. No one got their face ripped in half! People got their guts smashed out and their heads caved in. But this one felt gratuitous because one, it kept going, and two, I think they took away someone that I didn't realize I had made such a connection with until they took him away."

Part of what led fans to criticize the show was also The Walking Dead's frustrating decision to drag out Glenn's fate, waiting to reveal who dies by Negan's hand (or bat, rather) in the season seven premiere instead of in the season six finale, as expected. The rest of the season crawled along at a painfully slow pace, and it's no secret that the drama's ratings aren't what they used to be. Still, Yeun noted that he cherished his "incredible" time on TWD, even if he had some issues with how his character was written. "[It] was tough sometimes because I never felt like he got his fair due. I never felt like he got it from an outward perception," he explained. "I don't say this as a knock on anything. He always had to be part of something else to legitimize himself. He was rarely alone. And when he was alone, it took several years to convince people to be on his own."

Yeun elaborated on the notion that Glenn and Yeun himself, for that matter, were seen as secondary to other actors on the show no matter how beloved the character grew to be over five seasons, citing Entertainment Weekly's choice not to give him a cover until he was axed from the show (while costars Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, and Norman Reedus have all been featured in solo cover stories in the past).

"I didn't think of it as racism, where it's like, Oh, this is racist. I caught it in a way of Oh, this is how we're viewed all the time - as part of some glob, some amorphous, non-individualistic collective. We're like a Borg, and so because of that, they're like, 'Well, we don't need to give the shine to that character. There's all these other characters who are so cool!' I'd always hear people go, 'I love Glenn, he's my favorite character.' But the merchandise would go one way. That really might be the market, so I'm not going to sit here and be like, 'Why didn't they make Glenn merchandise?' But there was a disparity. They didn't know what Glenn was, and only in his death did they realize, 'Oh, that's what he was. That's the connection I had, and that's why it hurts me so much to see him die.'"

Glenn's spectacularly bloody end might have been controversial, but had the character lived, it might have been a fate literally worse than death. "I think the cruelest thing is that if Glenn had continued on, knowing how things usually shake out, I could totally foresee a situation where he just slowly, quietly disappears into the background and is kind of remembered but not really," Yeun added. "But in this way, it was like holding up a battered skull to the world to be like, 'Don't forget, this Asian person existed in this medium and now he's f*cking dead.' Like, he is f*cking dead. That's super cool! I'm cool with that."
