What All Moms Can Learn From This Woman Who Went on "Strike" From Her Family for 1 Month

I just got back from a 4-day work trip, and - it being the first time my husband would be alone overnight with both our 2-and-a-half-year-old and our 6-month-old - I expected to come home to disaster.

When I stepped foot inside, however, I was shocked, relieved, and selfishly disappointed to see that everything - and everyone - was just fine without me.

The same thing happened on a much larger scale to Kerry Egan, a South Carolina mom and author who was struggling to finish her book on deadline. With extreme hesitation, she decided to attend a writing residency across the country for an entire month. And in doing so, she went "on strike" from the household tasks and childcare responsibilities that filled her days.

"I had incredible guilt," Egan told Babble. "I was kind of panicked - I made casseroles and froze them. My kids wear uniforms to school, and I was so worried they wouldn't have clean clothes, that I called ahead to the PTA and bought used uniforms. No joke, I bought 12 uniform shirts for each kid and 10 pairs of pants for my son."

"A part of me was thrilled that they don't really need me, that they did fine without me, but then I was also kind of hurt."

Along with guilt, she had plenty of reservations and was unsure her husband could handle being the only parent for 30-odd days. "He said, 'How hard can it be?'" Egan said with a knowing laugh.

But fast forward one month, and Egan, like me, returned home to find that her family had survived without her.

"A part of me was thrilled that they don't really need me, that they did fine without me, but then I was also kind of hurt," Egan admits. "Part of me was like, 'Really? I've been like driving myself into the ground for the last 12 years for nothing?!'"

So, instead of just going back to the way things were poststrike, she decided to change her attitude toward parenting for good.

"I just continued not to do the stuff I used to do," she told Babble. "What I realized is that I really don't need to be doing all that. The reason it was my responsibility was that I took it."

Having experienced only a fraction of the time away from my kids as Egan did, I dug in to see what her mom strike really entailed. Here's how it worked for her:

1. Maintain the mental work that only you can do.

This includes scheduling kids' doctor appointments and keeping the family calendar, buying school supplies, and paying bills. "There are some things that my husband just can't seem to get," Egan said of these "still-enormous" parenting tasks that she took back upon her return.

2. Refuse to do the tasks that your partner can.

She'll do all the "invisible work" her husband can't seem to handle, but as for the obvious tasks he is capable of achieving? "I just don't do the rest." She comes home and asks him what's for dinner. "If he doesn't know, we order pizza," she said. "I make sure the kids have clean uniforms, but that's it for laundry. Either he does it or it doesn't get done. I don't food shop anymore. Out of food? More pizza!" This is perhaps the hardest part for most moms like me, who have grown used to grocery runs and can't imagine letting them go. But in doing so, Egan said, "I am far, far happier."

3. For the things in between, hire out help.

Although it doesn't work for every family, this couple has decided to budget in a regular house cleaner. Like them, I too have begun outsourcing this, and it's most definitely money well spent.

4. Don't worry about how this is affecting your partner.

For Egan, this new way of life is "liberating," but the same can't be said for her husband. "As my stress level has decreased, his has also increased," she said. "There's no getting around that. There's a reason it's called worry work. It has been hard for him, I can't deny it." Luckily for her family, he's been nothing but supportive.

Now that she's got this new routine down, she's astonished at what she had been doing all along: "I honestly never realized just how much psychic and mental and emotional space taking care of kids is. I really had no idea how much I did . . . until I left and had a month in which to not do those things."

Although Egan's new perspective seems simple enough to emulate, and although she learned valuable lessons from which most mothers could benefit, I fear it might take far more than one month to change the way I innately parent.

But you can bet I'll think of her – and kick myself – every time I make a last-minute run to the grocery store because we're out of food for dinner.

Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke Are Just as Cute Together in Real Life

Game of Thrones fans are understandably freaking out about Jon Snow finally meeting Daenerys Targaryen on the show, but honestly, it's just as fun to see Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke hanging out together in real life. The pair has been photographed together at several events over the past few years - along with Kit's girlfriend, former castmate Rose Leslie. Meanwhile, if the latest episode is any indication, it looks like Kit and Emilia's offscreen friendship will translate to great onscreen chemistry. Check out some of their cutest moments together, then see more pictures of the Game of Thrones cast out of costume and peek at some of Kit's sexiest snaps ever.

4 Ways Jon Snow Might Find Out Who His Parents Are in Season 7

Jon Snow iconically knows nothing, but perhaps the most important piece of information he doesn't know is who his parents are. Jon Snow's mother is revealed at the end of Game of Thrones' season six in a vision from Bran, and HBO then independently confirmed his dad - and that would be Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.

So, we know, but again, Jon does not know. It seems clear, then, with only two shorter seasons to go before the series wraps up for all time, that Jon Snow must find out his true parentage in season seven. The season is being set up to be all about Jon and Daenerys, and the subtext there is that they're related as two Targaryens. So now the question is, how will he find out? There have been multiple theories floated around out there, so we're going over all the ways Jon might learn about who his parents are next season.

11 Images That Only True Introverts Will Relate To

If you can't deal with crowds, prefer time with your pet over time with actual people, and find peace in the quiet of a familiar space (alone), then you might be an introvert. Introverts are deep-thinking do-gooders who gain energy and inspiration from themselves rather than from other people. Introverts are seriously amazing, but certain aspects of the personality type can lead to some kind of . . . awkward situations. An awesome artist and self-proclaimed extreme introvert put these situations into comics that will be SO real to introverts who live them daily. We're cringing/relating on all sorts of levels.

Game of Thrones: Cersei's Ice-Cold Revenge on Ellaria Sand, Explained

Cersei Lannister, the current holder of the Iron Throne, hates a good many people on Game of Thrones. As she outlines in the season seven premiere, the Lannisters at King's Landing face enemies from all sides. But there is perhaps no one she dislikes more right now than Ellaria Sand, parter to the late Oberyn Martell and mother to the Sand Snakes. But why this seething hatred?

It all has to do with Cersei's children, who we have seen time and again are the most important things in Cersei's life. Or they were - unfortunately for her, all three of them are dead, and Ellaria Sand is directly responsible for the murder of Cersei's daughter, Myrcella.

In the fifth season finale, Ellaria is seemingly ready to forgive and forget that the Lannisters are responsible for the death of her lover, Oberyn Martell. She willingly lets Jaime, Myrcella, and Trystane Martell (who Myrcella is set to marry) depart Dorne for King's Landing. Ellaria even kisses Myrcella gooodbye at the docks.

But it is quite literally a kiss of death, with Ellaria's lipstick being tainted with poison. Ellaria has an antidote to said poison, but Myrcella is not so lucky, succumbing to the poison aboard the ship, dying in her father's arms.

In season four's eighth episode, Oberyn is fighting for Tyrion Lannister in a trial by combat for Joffrey's death. Oberyn, a skilled spear fighter, has the Mountain defeated. But Oberyn can't help himself from taunting both the Mountain and the crowd, and it is during this preening that the Mountain gets a hold of him and then crushes his skull. It's a horrible scene, but it is not Cersei's fault that Oberyn dies.

Ellaria holds Cersei responsible, though, and murders Myrcella. So now it is Cersei's turn to exact some revenge.

"When my daughter was taken from me - my only daughter - well, you can't imagine how that feels unless you've lost a child . . . I never got to have a mother, but Myrcella did. She was mine and you took her from me, why did you do that?" says Cersei. "We all make hard choices. You chose to murder my daughter. You must have felt powerful after you made that choice. Do you feel powerful now?"

Cersei then gives the pain and torment right back to Ellaria by kissing her daughter Tyene with the same poison Ellaria used to kill Myrcella. The difference is that Ellaria is chained up with Tyene and will be forced to watch her die and then rot.

"Make sure the guards change the torches every few hours, I don't want her to miss a thing," says Cersei.

Kate and Will's Sweetest PDA Happens When They're Not Facing the Cameras

Prince William and Kate Middleton don't show PDA often, but when they do, it's superadorable. Aside from cozying up during sporting events, there is one thing that Will does when they're not facing the cameras that is especially sweet - he touches Kate's back. Whether he's helping his wife down the steps, or he's pulling her in for a hug, we can't get enough of the pair's "touching" moments. And he's not the only royal with a signature move. Kate has her own way of showing off her love for Will. See their discrete PDA below.

Remembering Sam Shepard and Jessica Lange's 30-Year Hollywood Love Story

Sam Shepard died at age 73 this week, and in addition to an incredible Hollywood legacy, the actor also left behind his three children: Jesse, 47, from his marriage to O-Lan Jones; and Hannah, 31, and Samuel, 30, from his longtime relationship with Jessica Lange. While Jessica and Sam never got married, their romance was one of Hollywood's longest-lasting love stories. The pair first met on the set of Frances in 1982 and started dating shortly after. They went on to have two children before splitting in 2009.

Even after they parted ways, they weren't shy about opening up to the media. In 2010, Sam talked about their "tumultuous" relationship, and Jessica mentioned her ex during an interview with AARP magazine shortly before his death. "I wouldn't call Sammy easygoing and funny," she told the publication. "But everybody has their dark side, and he always does it with a sense of humor." As we mourn the loss of the beloved actor, look back at his sweetest moments with Jessica over the years.

What Cersei's Prophecy on Game of Thrones Means For Her Fate This Season

The seventh season of Game of Thrones has just begun, so it's time to look back at all the seeds that were planted throughout the exciting episode. Cersei is now queen, with one thing on her mind: revenge. She talks to Jaime about her bloodlust while also dismissing their need to grieve over their children, reminding us of the prophecy Cersei was once told, which she references last back in season six's premiere, just after she finds that her daughter Myrcella is dead. Here's what you need to know about said prophecy - and why it matters this season.

Cersei's Prophecy

Cersei mentions the prophecy of a witch she'd been told years ago: "She promised me three children . . . she promised me they'd die," she says, and of course, it wasn't all that long ago that we actually saw this scene on the show; it happens in the season five premiere. Here's the clip where a young Cersei visits Maggy the frog, the fortune teller in question.

"Everything she said came true . . ." Cersei says in the season six premiere to Jaime, her beloved brother and father of her three children - all three of whom are now indeed dead. "This prophecy, it's fate." So let's go over exactly what the witch did prophecize and how it all plays out on the show.

1. "You'll never wed the prince, you'll wed the king."

Did it come true? Yes. Cersei marries King Robert Baratheon and not "the prince" - Rhaegar Targaryen.

2. "You'll be queen, for a time. Then comes another, younger, more beautiful, to cast you down and take all you hold dear."

Did it come true? Yes, though the younger, more beautiful queen had been questioned. Margaery came to mind first as the young queen who was married to King Tommen, but now that she's dead, it's assuredly Daenerys Targaryen, the queen we are all hoping brings about the end of the Lannisters.

3. "The king will have 20 children and you will have three. Gold will be their crowns . . . gold their shrouds."

Did it come true? Yes. The king did have multiple illegitimate children without the help of Cersei, while Cersei bears just three: Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen - all three of whom have died. Joffrey and Myrcella are both poisoned, by Lady Olenna Tyrell and Ellaria Sand, respectively. Tommen tragically commits suicide by throwing himself out a window after he sees that Cersei has murdered his love, Margaery Tyrell.

What's Next?

But wait, there is one more piece to the prophecy in George R.R. Martin's books that did not make it into that scene in the show. The witch also tells Cersei: "And when your tears have drowned you, the Valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you." "Valonqar" means "little brother" in Valyrian - and if we are taking that literally, that means Tyrion . . . or Jaime, who is her twin but could technically be her "little brother." (That really makes the incest somehow even grosser, right?) And it's theorized that her killer could be someone else entirely.

So, there's still a piece of the prophecy the witch predicted that we can look forward to: Cersei's murder!

Why? Well, andiamo . . .

Why the Story of Detroit Is More Relevant Than Ever

The Detroit race riot is one of the most brutal urban revolts of the 20th century, and Academy Award-winning director Kathryn Bigelow is bringing the story to the big screen in the form of Detroit. The film - which hits theaters on Aug. 4 and stars John Boyega (Dismukes), Will Poulter (Krauss), Jacob Latimore (Fred), Jason Mitchell (Carl), and Hannah Murray (Julie) - tells the horrific true story of the Algiers Motel incident, one of the most terrifying events in American history.

In the Summer of 1967, a group of white police officers murdered three young black men - Carl Cooper, Aubrey Pollard, and Fred Temple - in a motel, and two days later, they raided an unlicensed bar in Detroit, which sparked a violent confrontation that later turned into a five-day riot through the city and left over 43 people dead and more than 1,100 wounded.

The Michigan Army National Guard and local police officers reported that they were only protecting the motel after hearing a gun go off inside and claimed they were being fired at. It's still unclear exactly how the murders happened, but it was thought to be a starter pistol that set off the shootings that killed Cooper, Pollard, and Temple. Starter pistols are mainly used to begin track events and are incapable of firing real bullets. While the pistol has not been recovered, the survivors have given conflicting testimonies about its use.

Reporter John Hersey chronicled the incident in his 1968 book The Algiers Motel Incident, writing that at least two of the three men were moved to separate rooms and murdered and that the third might have been killed during the police raid. None of the officers charged were ever convicted. While the movie isn't 100 percent true to real life, the continued cases of police brutality against people of color in this country make the film all the more poignant.

This Is Why I'm Keeping My American Last Name When I Get Married

"So what's your new name going to be when you get married?" My answer: "It's going to be 'Emilia' . . . wait for it . . . 'Benton.'"

Most people express surprise and shock when I tell them I don't plan to change my name when I get married later this year, but in 2017, I'm equally shocked that most people would just assume I would, because it's what you're "supposed" to do (here in the US, anyway). But a name is such a huge part of one's identity, and my decision is one that I actually have given a lot of thought to - and the reason is probably one you'd never guess.

My mother was born and raised in Lima, Peru, where she lived for most of her life before she finished medical school, married my American dad, and eventually moved to my hometown of Houston, TX, a few years before my twin sister and I were born.

In Peru, children are given four total names at birth: first name, middle name, father's last name, mother's last name. When women get married, they traditionally keep their legal birth names instead of taking on their partner's. This is exactly what all my seven Peruvian tías have done, and the traditions are actually the same in Mexico, where my fiancé is from.

Despite the fact that my mom's Peruvian culture was always a huge part of her life, she chose to follow the American custom and took my dad's last name, swapping her original middle name for just her father's last name's initial. Her legal name became Claudia S. Benton - the S stood for Subiria.

Since my mom passed away when I was 11, when I got engaged, I turned to my dad and her sisters to try to learn about how she came to this decision. My aunts suggested she was just beginning her career as a doctor, and it's likely she thought that having an American name would give her an advantage in the medical field when it came to being taken seriously by her future colleagues. My dad has told me she was convinced she would end up at a program either in Detroit or Miami, because "that's where they sent all the foreign-born Latinos." I can certainly sympathize with that, as I've been stereotyped and even had my intelligence insulted in professional and educational settings simply because I'm visibly Latina. But I'd be lying if I said that revelation, and the fact that my mom might have gone to lengths to conceal her Latino last name, didn't also make me sad.

I've known for years, long before I met my now-fiancé, that I wanted to keep my name if and when I got married. Even though it's been almost 19 years since my mom passed away unexpectedly, she's still widely remembered within the Texas medical field and in the large hospital she worked at. It never fails to make me proud any time I am recognized as Claudia Benton's daughter, so why would I want people not to know I'm related to this amazing woman? My mom's decision might have been an effort to fight stereotypes, but my decision to keep my American last name, her last name, has everything to do with her legacy.

4 Trader Joe's Knockoff Products You Need to Try and 2 You Should Skip

Part of what makes Trader Joe's so awesome is the huge variety of affordable products. And the widely known reason that a whopping 80 percent of Trader Joe's products are the company's own is that TJ's sells other brands' products under its own name at a discounted price. Sometimes TJ's sells the exact same product, and other times it makes its own version of a popular pantry item, such as sriracha sauce. This policy inevitably leaves us with the questions: which knockoff products are worth buying at Trader Joe's and which ones are better off as the original?

Thankfully, we've tried hundreds of Trader Joe's products over the years and have a pretty good idea about which ones are totally worth the purchase and which ones you might want to skip in favor of a different brand. Ahead, discover some of our picks for Trader Joe's store-brand products versus the brands that we think might have inspired the knockoffs. Full disclosure: this information is not based on confirmation from the company - Trader Joe's has declined comment in the past - but rather from our own taste-test investigations.

Game of Thrones: Euron Greyjoy Is the Hilarious Assh*le We Kind of Love

First things first: Euron Greyjoy is a f*cking terrible person on Game of Thrones. Not only is he a psychotic murderer, but he seems to get off on betraying his family, torturing people, and doing anything to impress Cersei. But during the third episode of season seven, some of his best assh*le moments are also pretty LOL-worthy. In between taunting Jamie about his sexual relationship with his sister, he also calls Theon a "twat" for failing to save his sister Yara and instead jumping overboard during Euron's invasion of the Iron Fleet. His line delivery is hilarious, his facial expressions are gold, and his character is just an all-around amazing person to hate and appreciate at the same time.

What Is Rhabdo? It's Not Just "CrossFit and Spinning Disease"

You may have heard the scares lately about "Spinning disease" . . . or maybe it has been branded "CrossFit disease" in your community. Either way, the labeling is not painting a clear picture. Have you heard of rhabdomyolisis? Referred as "rhabdo," for short, this serious medical condition can be life threatening if you don't catch it - and healthy, young people who exercise frequently can be at risk. Here's what you need to know.

What Is It?

Rhabdomyolysis is a rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue. This breakdown in turn releases myoglobin [a protein from your muscle tissue] into your bloodstream, which your body doesn't need - it's a "waste." This waste ends up at your kidneys where it needs to be filtered out. But the thing is, your kidneys aren't equipped to handle this amount of waste (those little guys are good at their job, but they can only do so much!). The influx of waste and overload on your kidneys can lead to kidney damage or kidney failure, which can be fatal.

What Are Some Symptoms and Signs?

"Initial symptoms can be very subtle," said Dr. Stephanie Long, MD at One Medical. She gave us some information on what to look out for (and why it happens):

  • Muscle weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Soreness
  • Bruising
  • Changes to your urine (low urine output or infrequent urination; dark, tea-colored urine)
  • Fever
  • Sense of malaise, or feeling sick
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Agitation

How Do You Get It?

Despite rhabdo being referred to as "CrossFit Disease" and "Spinning Disease," it's not exclusive to exercise.

  • Trauma. Recent "car accidents, crushing injuries to limbs, [or] blocked blood vessels," can trigger rhabdomyolysis, as well as "lying in one place or position for an excess period of time." Physical trauma is the number-one cause for this muscular breakdown.
  • Excess Exercise. Are you going too hard? "Excess exertion from intense workouts," can cause rhabdo. Dr. Long specifically cited "Spinning and CrossFit." This is the instance in which, "young, healthy individuals" are impacted - and the reason why we're hearing about rhabdo more in mainstream media and common conversations. She said, "Spinning and CrossFit are main factors we can identify prior to rhabdomyolysis. It's recommended to start low and go slow with any new workout. Build up as your body tolerates."
  • Medications. Talk with your doctor before starting any of the following medications to ensure that you're watching out for rhabdo symptoms. "The most notorious of which are statins [a type of medication], that are prescribed to lower cholesterol or after strokes," said Dr. Long. This includes "Atorvastatin (Lipitor), Rosuvastatin (Crestor), and Pravastatin (Pravachol)." She noted that even antibiotics can be associated with rhabdo - cyclosporine or erythromycin, specifically - as well as "a gout treatment called colchicine."
  • Illegal drugs. Dr. Long noted that "Illicit substances can also lead to rhabdomyolysis, including cocaine, amphetamines, ecstasy, or LSD." Yet another reason to stay off of drugs!
  • Metabolic disorders. This is more complex, and you'll need to work with a medical provider, but "other reasons [for rhabdomyolysis] would be metabolic disorders like hypothyroidism or diabetic ketoacidosis."
  • Infections. There are even more rare (and seemingly random) causes for rhabdo, too. "It can occur with viral or bacterial infections, or as a result of a snakebite," she said. "Less common reasons would be rare genetic disorders."

We asked Dr. Long why CrossFit and Spinning tend to yield more cases of rhabdo, and she told us it has to do with the intensity of these workouts. "For patients who are new to a sport or activity, it's easy not to understand where you are at [in terms of physical capability] and what is too intense for your muscles," she told POPSUGAR. "People get dehydrated, and they are doing intense, fast repetitions with a lot of muscle load. You need to build up to that over time."

How Do You Prevent It?

Want to keep rhabdo from happening to you? Of course you do. According to Dr. Long, it's a very simple three-step process:

  • Hydrate
  • Listen to your body
  • Increase intensity of workouts gradually

How Do You Treat It?

Rhabdo requires immediate medical attention. "We treat rhabdomyolysis with fluid rehydration in the hospital," Dr. Long told POPSUGAR. "A very small percentage of the time, a patient's kidneys need more aggressive support and require dialysis." She noted that if you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms "after a tough, new workout or starting a new medication, like a statin," visit your healthcare provider immediately.

Stars Mourn the Heartbreaking Death of Legendary Actor and Playwright Sam Shepard

Sam Shepard passed away this week after complications from ALS, and Hollywood is mourning the death of the legendary actor and playwright. Fellow playwright Beau Willimon was among the first to pay tribute to him, posting a photo of Sam on Twitter and writing, "Sam Shepard is one of the greats. These eyes saw so much, and he wrote of what he saw with fearless, timeless honesty. RIP maestro." Since then, several other stars have taken to social media to share their favorite memories with the actor and tweet their condolences.

Sam is best known for his portrayal of pilot Chuck Yeager in 1983's The Right Stuff and was also known for his roles in films like The Notebook and Black Hawk Down. He is survived by his three children: Jesse, 47, from his marriage to O-Lan Jones, as well as Hannah, 31, and Samuel, 30, from his longtime relationship with Jessica Lange (the two separated in 2009).

If You're Visiting the Bahamas Soon, You Must Track Down This 1 Hidden Gem

Let's be real. Just about everything in the Bahamas is worthy of an Instagram picture: the crystal-clear waters, the pearly white sands, the gently swaying palm trees. There are endless opportunities for capturing your new computer screensaver, but we've just discovered a hidden gem that'll earn you all the "likes" and fuel your wanderlust in ways it's never been fueled before.

Situated in the turquoise waters of Coco Plum Beach on the Bahamian island of Great Exuma is a collection of wooden swing sets that make for the perfect photo opportunity, especially at low tide. Apparently these swings were placed in the water for the Fyre Festival (you know, that "once-in-a-lifetime luxury experience" that turned out to be a total mess), and they've remained intact ever since. Read on to see the dreamiest pictures of this little-known destination.

Interns at These 25 Companies Earn More Than the Average American Worker

If you're lucky enough to score a crazy-high-paying internship at Facebook, you no longer get to complain about broke college student woes. In perhaps typical Silicon Valley fashion, the tech behemoth offers its interns a handsome median pay rate of $8,000 per month. It's enough to make any working stiff long to attempt the plot of The Internship - taking an internship as a grown-up at a tech company because the opportunity (and apparently the pay!) is so tremendous.

While Facebook tops the Glassdoor list of highest-paying internships in America, it's far from the only company to offer swanky pay and helpful perks. Both Apple and Yelp, for example, offer a median monthly pay of $6,400, while interns at other companies like Deutsche Bank and Adobe have mentioned the hands-on experience and access to senior employees as major highlights.

As Glassdoor points out, "The median annual salary for a full-time US worker is currently $51,350. However, if interns at these companies worked a full 12 months, their salaries would range from about $96,000 at Facebook (No. 1) to about $55,000 at Bank of America (No. 25), much higher than what the average full-time American worker earns." Keep scrolling to see the list of America's highest-paying internships and feel that slow, familiar burn of envy.

Why Being an Introvert Is Actually the Biggest Blessing

Society doesn't want you to be alone.

If you're alone, that means you're too shy. If you're alone, that means you don't have enough friends. If you're alone, that means the rest of us should feel bad for you, because you have no one to talk to and you probably have, like, 29 cats and three bottles of hard alcohol in your house.

I, however, want you to be alone. Why? Because it's good for you.

For a second, ignore all the memes implying how lame it is to stay in on Friday nights, the TV and wine jokes that invade casual conversation, the inquiries from your co-workers about your big plans for the weekend. Sometimes, no plans are the best plans. Sometimes, hanging out with yourself is the most gratifying way to pass a Saturday. As an introvert, this is something I can attest to.

Fundamentally, my natural introverted tendencies conflict with our culture's idea of how we should carry ourselves outside of the working hour. My favorite thing to do after coming home from the office every day is read a book, peruse the Internet, or watch Netflix by myself in the living room. Here and there, I'll head to the park a few blocks away from my place and just sit on the bench and enjoy the view of the city and the people and the dogs playing fetch. I think one of the greatest simple pleasures is sipping hot tea in a cafe, the two-person table empty save for my coffee cup and paperback - surrounded, yet totally alone. And for the most part, culture thinks this is all sort of pathetic, because the socially acceptable thing to do in life is, well, socialize.

Make no mistake - I fully understand the importance of maintaining human relations. I simply don't think our entire existence should hinge on it.

Thought I may be introverted, I still actively keep in communication with loved ones. I have a serious live-in boyfriend (he works longer shifts, allowing for the "me" time I crave). Every other day, I chat on the phone with my parents, who live in the Midwest. My brother and I talk about politics on messenger frequently. Any given night, my best friend is texting me about some random topic. Occasionally, I'll have a meal with friends in the city. And if I'm feeling particularly carefree, I may converse with a stranger at the bus stop.

Yet solo-shaming persists, because being alone - even for a little while - is perceived by some as unusual or, in lots of cases, wrong.

Throughout the years, I've learned to simply brush if it off when someone makes fun of me or looks down on me for my choice lack of companionship, but honestly? I shouldn't have to. As a whole, society could learn to be a bit more accepting of the lone wolves, because not everyone needs a pack to feel content. Anyway, there are about a million other things we can shift our concerns to, no?

Becoming aware of the bountiful benefits of spending time by yourself is the first step in educating the public. Being alone clears your mind, increases creativity, makes you work harder, and can even aid in getting rid of depression, especially in teens.

The biggest misconception of all? That alone means lonely.

"Although alone and lonely are often thought of as being one in the same, alone doesn't equal loneliness," writes psychiatrist Abigail Brenner in a thoughtful piece for Psychologist Today. "Learning to be alone may be initially scary, but once mastered serves as the cornerstone for your development and growth as a human being. There's so much to be gained from learning to rely, and more importantly, to trust your own inner voice as the best source for your own guidance."

And that's just it - I'm able to deal with my own thoughts, which I believe is something many people aren't capable of. I'm able to cultivate my independence, count on myself for anything and everything (including a good time!), and consciously reflect on my emotions and mental state. When people pity me for the time I spend alone, I find myself feeling a little sorry for them, because they don't understand what it takes to uphold a healthy relationship with the self. Without a doubt, it's one of the most important connections to preserve.

In the end, I don't need to defend my well-being when sipping tea in a cafe by the company of my book and my book alone. I'm happy.

After Nearly 3 Decades, Disney's Great Movie Ride Is Closing

As Walt Disney World continues to expand Hollywood Studios, many beloved rides are being closed to make room for incoming attractions. Among them is The Great Movie Ride. On July 25, Disney confirmed that the classic dark ride will be replaced by Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway in the coming year.

Though rumors circulated for nearly a year, Disney made a more formal announcement at the D23 Expo by introducing The Great Movie Ride's replacement. According to WDW News Today, Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway will also be a dark ride in which guests will be transported into the world of an animated short.

Following the D23 Expo, the company announced a special after-hours event to commemorate the departing ride. Though the event was held on July 28, The Great Movie Ride will remain open until Aug. 13. Disney is also selling limited-edition merchandise in honor of the ride that reads, "That's a wrap!"

Hollywood Studios is home to many exciting attractions and thrill rides, however, The Great Movie Ride has been a fixture since the park opened in 1989. Located within a replica of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, it's also one of the first things visitors see upon entering the park. Disney has not yet disclosed any plans about changing the iconic facade.

I'm a Woman in Tech, and This Is What I Want in a Company

The following story, "I'm a Woman in Tech, and This Is What I Want in a Company" by Leigha Mitchell, was originally posted on Medium.

As a female developer these are some things I want in a company before I decide to join, and once I'm a part of the team.

I want to see other women

The first thing most people do before interviewing or even applying for a job is look at the company careers page. If it's plastered with pictures of white guys in flannel with beards, that's a red flag. If the exec team is all white men who look like they could be my father that's another one. When you're a small team and those are the cards you're dealt, it's harder to get around that. But you can always put a statement on this page explaining the fact you want to diversify your team and why. Another trick I've seen is having a clearly female silhouette saying "This could be you!".

Once I've made it past the careers page, I want to see them in person. It's always important to have women in the interview process, but especially when the candidate is also a woman. This makes me feel more comfortable with asking certain questions, and offers an opportunity to ask things only another woman in tech could answer. Even if there aren't currently women on the team I'd be joining (red flag) bring someone from another team in for a culture interview.

I don't give a sh*t about your "amazing culture"

Everyone has great culture and you're all best friends, I get it. This is so common in startup land that it's meaningless. I've worked at these places, and I promise you what is an amazing culture for one person can be horrible for another. I want you to prove it. I want to meet members from every team, I want to chat with them and get to know what they're like. It's important for me to know that these are people I'm going to work well and grow with, and that they want to do those things with me.

"Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." - Obi Wan Kenobi

I don't care that you have a ping-pong table, or a keg, or free snacks. I care that the CEO leaves on time to pick up her kids during the week, that the holidays are for spending time with your family, and that when the guy in marketing got engaged to his boyfriend everyone went out for lunch to celebrate. Those are the things I want to see, and the team I want to be a part of.

Tell me how you're going to help me grow

The moment I get stagnant, I get bored and I move on. That is a huge factor in why I became a developer in the first place. There's always something new to learn, or practice, or build. This means growth and projection are extremely important to me and I've learned the hard way to make sure that is clear from the beginning.

I, like a lot of other women, am very passive when it comes to asking for raises or promotions. Having an outline of expectations for each level of developer helps with this. Now I have a guideline and I know exactly what I need to do to meet those expectations. It also helps reduce the opportunity for discrimination. Everyone knows what is expected for each level, and for each salary. You either meet the requirements, or you keep working at things until you do.

I should forget that I'm a minority, but be supported when I remember

It should never be painfully obvious that I'm the only woman in the room. In an ideal world I won't be, but sometimes that is still the case. We are adults and everyone should be treated with respect and equally, but that is a whole other conversation. It's great to have a CEO or a few advocates in the company who support diversity, but if it's not a part of every employee's mentality it won't happen.

If I bring something to the attention of a manager or member of the exec team, like concerns about lack of diversity or the treatment of women in tech, it should be taken seriously. If it's within the company their help is crucial, but if it is a more broad concern I want to know that I have their support. If I tell them I want more women to get into tech I want them to say "So what are you going to do about it?" and know that they will push and support me.

Help me fight my imposter syndrome

Everyone knows about Imposter Syndrome these days and it's something I suffer from. Especially as a woman in tech, and extra especially as a more junior developer. I'm incredibly hard on myself so it helps to have a team that will have my back in the fight. I don't mean that I want to be told how awesome I am, I want real advice. I want to know that my mentors started out where I did, I need to be told to step back and look at the big picture and not the day to day.

"The dark side clouds everything. Impossible to see the future is." - Yoda

That being said, it is also beneficial to be on a team that will tell other people how awesome you are. A lot of people don't like to brag or bring attention to their accomplishments, that's why you need to do it for them. Seeing others be supportive of their team mates and brag about other's accomplishments is a powerful thing. That is an environment you can't fake, and everyone deserves to be a part of.

I've been lucky enough to find a company like this, but for those still looking this is what I would expect and demand. For companies looking to hire more women and diversify your teams, I hope you learned something.

Garth Brooks's Daughter Gets Engaged During His LA Concert - See the Sweet Photos

Image Source: Getty / C Flanigan

Garth Brooks had a lot to celebrate during his concert at the LA Forum on Saturday night; first, he welcomed his newly 21-year-old daughter Allie to the stage as his new backup singer and the two performed a few of his iconic hits together before the country singer led the crowd in a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for her. If that wasn't exciting enough, Allie's boyfriend, Jonathan Roberts, was waiting in the wings to ask her a very important question as she exited the stage. In a video posted to Facebook, you can see Jonathan getting down on one knee and asking Allie to marry him - meanwhile, Garth was still on stage singing "She's Every Woman."

Allie is the youngest daughter of Garth and his first wife, songwriter Sandy Mahl.

Ina Garten Swears by This 6-Ingredient Salad

Shocker: I'm in love with another recipe by Ina Garten, aka The Barefoot Contessa. This time, it's her sweet and salty, crispy and creamy Cape Cod Chopped Salad, which just so happens to have a five-star rating. Before you turn away at the thought of eating greens, hear me out. It's full of tart apples, dried cranberries, toasted walnuts, blue cheese, and, oh yes, crispy bacon. Perfect for lunch or as an accompaniment to another one of her all-American recipes, like spicy tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons, this arugula salad is so good, you'll forget kale ever existed. The dish is packed with tasty contrasts. The flavors and textures work together to create a salad that definitely isn't healthy but certainly is delicious. Plus, you get to throw the ingredients together as the smell of browning bacon wafts through your kitchen. The elements are brought together by a simple dressing that's absolutely worth making from scratch - after all, wouldn't you do anything to eat a salad that doesn't qualify as a sad desk lunch?

Put Down the Photoshop! This Influencer Likes You Just the Way You Are

We've all done some crazy things #ForTheGram. And if you've ever used Photoshop on your pics (or watched influencers do it to theirs), you know just how drastically the program can alter your looks. Now, one model is speaking out against the practice in an effort to inspire others to embrace their natural beauty.

Amanda Steele is a model and beauty vlogger who has a two-million-strong Instagram following, so it's safe to say she knows a thing or two about selfies. She's been candid about her love for filters in the past, writing on Instagram that Alden is her go-to for looking tan. But in a series of tweets on July 27, Amanda let us know in no uncertain terms that she is not here for extreme photoshopping.

"People edit themselves so much on Instagram it's sad that people can't just appreciate natural beauty," Amanda began. "How is ANYONE supposed to live up to these expectations when they are false??"

She clarified that "It is one thing for magazines/campaigns to Photoshop photos," but it is "not fair" when the same practice is extended to Instagram.

To be clear, Amanda isn't railing against those who make small edits, such as brushing over blemishes or reducing redness. "I totally get skin smoothing and detailing to make a more flawless photo, but I know [so] many people who literally reshape themselves."

The model summed up her epic rant with, "I love you. You're beautiful. F*ck the fake. Mic drop I'm out."

Read on for her full body-positive Twitter tirade, where she talks about how unrealistic beauty expectations impacted her own self-image.

Why You Should Never, Ever Check Your Luggage on a Plane

If you check luggage on your flight, you're inviting disaster along for your trip. It's not always that dramatic - sometimes it's just a mere inconvenience - but other times you're asking for more trouble than those extra pairs of shoes that made you upgrade to a larger bag are worth. As a frequent traveler, I avoid checking luggage at all costs - because I've learned the hard way. Unless I'm going on a trip spanning several weeks in the dead of Winter and need bulky sweaters and jackets to stay warm, I'm flying stress-free with just my trusted carry-on. I've had my luggage damaged. I've had my luggage lost and received it days later. I've had to switch flights/airlines last minute in order to make a connection at my next destination city and would not have been able to do so if my luggage was already on its way to be loaded onto my original plane. I've experienced the Hunger Games-like rush to grab my bag off the belt in order to make it through customs at an international airport so that I could catch the next leg of my flight. I've dealt with it all, and you probably will too if you check your bags frequently.

I know, there are exceptions to my "no checked bag" rule - if you're traveling with young children who can't lug their own bags (start them young, I say!), then you may not be able to avoid checking. Strollers, car seats - I get it. Maybe you literally can't avoid checking because you need to bring your laptop along for your travels, and there's a controversial rule that bans electronics on your flight. Been there. There are understandably circumstances when it can't be avoided, but if you can avoid checking, don't hesitate to. It's possible, I promise. Here's why you should keep your luggage with you on your next flight.

1. You save money.

This is a pretty significant reason to skip checking a bag, especially depending on what airline you're flying. While some airlines (looking at you, JetBlue and Virgin!) let you have your first bag (as long as it's not oversize) for free, many costs range from $25-$50 per bag for checking. Paying for a bag you have to wait in a long line to check (and one that may get lost or damaged) really feels like adding insult to injury.

2. You'll get through the airport faster.

Carrying on your luggage means avoiding the lines for checking your bags before you go through security. Many airlines allow you to check in to your flight 24 hours ahead of time (international flights can have different policies since passports are involved). You can get your mobile boarding pass and skip the wait to drop your bags by breezing past the kiosks and heading straight for security. Getting through the airport will be much less painful.

3. Your belongings are in safe hands.

You can rest assured that your valuables are in safe hands, because they are in your hands. When you need to bring items on your travels that have great worth to you, you'll have peace of mind knowing where they are at all times because you'll have control over how they are stored and transported.

4. Your luggage itself will be more protected.

It's no secret that your luggage isn't necessarily being handled with care. It's tossed on a conveyor belt and haphazardly transferred (after a roller-coaster ride) to the underbelly of your plane, where it will be crammed among countless other bags. While it's normal for luggage to go through some wear and tear on your travels, carrying it on means keeping it in better condition for longer.

5. It's easier to travel with less-bulky items.

If you plan on traveling from destination to destination instead of staying in one place, having a small carry-on bag is much more manageable than toting around a 50-pound bag full of things you probably don't even need.

6. You are forced to bring only what you need.

Not checking your bags means becoming a smarter packer. Because you have to optimize your bag space, you'll be more inclined to pack just the basics. You can avoid bringing along things you will inevitably realize in hindsight were unnecessary, and soon packing will be like an art form to you. Having an efficient packing system can make air travel so much less stressful.

7. You have everything you need for delays and long layovers.

If you have to camp out in the airport due to unforeseen delays, flight cancellations, or long layovers, having a carry-on with all of your belongings means having access to everything you could need during that time.

8. You don't have to wait for your bag once you deplane.

After hours of a long flight, the last thing anyone feels like doing is waiting around for that beautiful (or shrill, depending on how you look at it) beeping noise that indicates your bags are on their way down the belt. It seems like no matter how early or late you arrive to check in luggage, your bag is always the very last to come trundling down the slide. If it comes at all. Skip this process altogether and head straight out of the airport with your carry-on.

The Hills' Whitney Port Welcomes Her First Child!

Game of Thrones: How Lady Olenna and Jaime Lannister Really Felt About That Scene

The following contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season seven.

There have been more than a few memorable deaths on Game of Thrones, but leave it to Lady Olenna to be a badass in her final moments. Right after Jaime Lannister pours some poison into a glass of wine for her to drink, Lady Olenna reveals that she killed his son, Joffrey, leaving him speechless. Her shocking speech is the cherry on top of a truly incredible scene, and actors Diana Rigg and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau spoke to People about filming that moment together.

Rigg said she's happy viewers don't actually see her last moments. "It's a beautiful scene, and Nikolaj is wonderful," she said. "When it's well-written, it's a joy to do. And you don't get an awful a lot of always-brilliant writing on television, do you?"

Meanwhile, Coster-Waldau called it a "great scene." Of the plot, he said, "It's such a great surprise that suddenly they go there and the Lannisters actually were smarter than Tyrion, which was really cool." He added that it was an "honor" to be part of that scene with Rigg. "She's given so much to the show with the character, just amazing," he said. "And of course both on and off set, she's wonderful and she's so smart and so clever and she's just a brilliant actress. I was very lucky to be there."

According to Rigg, it was business as usual on set after they filmed her death scene. She joked, "No sooner as I die then it was on to the next scene! It's pretty pell‑mell on the set. They have a huge schedule and they have to get a move on."

The 1 Word Ryan Reynolds Refuses to Let Blake Lively Say Around Their Daughters

There are plenty of words that are off-limits to parents, but when you have daughters, some are more forbidden than others. For Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds - parents to girls James and Inez - one term in particular is completely banned.

"We've joked that my daughter is bossy," Blake said in an interview with Glamour magazine. "But my husband said, 'I don't ever want to use that word again. You've never heard a man called bossy.'"

Blake explained, "There would never be any negative connotation for a man being a boss, so to add a negative connotation on a woman being bossy? It's belittling. And it doesn't encourage them to be a boss."

The actress also revealed another rather clever tactic Ryan uses when choosing his words around his two daughters.

"With my husband, I'm lucky to have someone who is so conscious," she said. "My husband was like, 'Why do I always say he?' And I said, 'That's what we're taught.' So he'll pick up, like a caterpillar, and instead of saying, 'What's his name?' he'll say, 'What's her name?'"

As for Blake, she admits she has "no idea" how to be the best parent for a daughter, but "I do know that I have to watch her and listen to her and not project any of my own insecurities or struggles on her."

For that, she turns to comedian Sarah Silverman.

"[She] does a great bit that I'm going to butcher: 'Stop telling little girls that they can do anything. They already believe they can do anything. It opens the door for questions . . .' We're all born feeling perfect until somebody tells us we're not. So there's nothing I can teach my daughter. She already has all of it. The only thing I can do is protect what she already feels."

Cersei Lannister - Er, Lena Headey - Is Selling Her SoCal Home, and It's Gorgeous

When Lena Headey isn't chillin' in King's Landing while in character as Cersei Lannister, the Game of Thrones actress is probably relaxing on a throne - er, poolside lounger - at her charming SoCal home that's fit for the queen she truly is. The Sherman Oaks residence, which is now listed by John Aaroe Group agent Zoe Rudolph for $1.945 million, boasts five bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms in a lovely "mid-century meets boho chic" setting, Trulia reports.

Although Headey's home is now decked out with reclaimed oak flooring, gorgeous tile backsplashes, vaulted ceilings, and retro-inspired furnishings, it hasn't always looked this way. When she purchased the property back in 2014 for $790,000, it was quite the fixer-upper. She may not have had wildfire, but she had some crazy design skills when it came to her dramatic overhaul of the dated home.

Read on to catch a glimpse of Headey's open and airy home, which is now on the market.

Superhero Doctor Stops Mid-Labor to Help a Screaming Mother Give Birth

Dr. Amanda Hess has delivered plenty of babies as an OBGYN, but the last thing she expected was to have to deliver a baby while she was in labor herself. Dr. Hess was slipping into her patient gown and getting ready to welcome her second child when she heard a woman in active labor in a nearby room at Frankfort Regional Hospital in Kentucky.

The woman, Leah Halliday Johnson, was fully dilated and screaming, and though her doctor was on his way back to the hospital, there was no time to wait. The baby was in distress, and Dr. Hess stepped in to deliver the newborn.

"I just put on another gown to cover up my backside and put on some boots over my shoes, to keep from getting any fluid and all that stuff on me, and went down to her room," Dr. Hess told WKYT.

Dr. Hess actually recognized the woman from her final appointment at her practice the week before, but because Dr. Hess was going to be giving birth as well, she wasn't the scheduled doctor for Halliday Johnson. But the second she heard the woman screaming, it didn't matter - that baby needed to be delivered and Dr. Hess was in the right place at the right time.

"You know I love doing what I do," she said. "I love taking care of mothers and babies and really a lot of doctors are always thinking of their patients even when they're a patient themselves."

The heroic Dr. Hess later welcomed a healthy baby girl - Ellen Joyce - just a few rooms down the hall.

Extend Your Keurig's Lifetime by Cleaning It Properly With These Tips

If your last cup of coffee tasted a little off or your Keurig machine has been experiencing problems, it's probably in desperate need of a deep clean. But if you tossed or lost the manual, we've got you covered. Look to the following tips to extend the life of your brewer.

How Often Does It Have to Be Cleaned?

To get the most out of your brewer and to get the best possible cup, you should be descaling it every three to six months. Nespresso advises you to run its machine with water after each use to prevent coffee grounds from building up, which is also suggested for Keurig machines.

How to Descale Your Machine

For any type of coffee machine, it's best to use purified or filtered water to prevent any mineral buildup in the system. Both Keurig and Nespresso sell descaling solution and kits to help remove the calcium deposits left by water.

Other Preventative Care

Be sure to rinse your brewer's water reservoir and change the water sitting in it regularly. Swapping out your Keurig's water filter every two months will also improve coffee quality.
