Halle Berry Gives Us Major '90s Vibes With Her Throwback Hair Wraps
Anyone who went to camp in the '90s likely remembers trading oily stickers, playing hand games, and rocking hair wraps. For those who missed the decade, the latter is the act of wrapping colorful yarn around a section of your hair. You can buy a kit to DIY it on Etsy. Halle Berry just spoke to our nostalgic hearts by rocking a totally '90s hairstyle on the red carpet featuring this throwback look.
At the premiere of Kidnap in LA on July 31, Halle wore her hair sleek and center-parted - a trend we already called that is making a comeback. She took it one step further by accessorizing with hair wraps and rings. She added to the '90s-inspired moment with a slightly shimmery nude lip. Before Kylie Jenner influenced a generation to run out and buy neutral-hued lipsticks, it was a mainstream color from the decade.
To keep it style feeling 2017, she rocked subtly chic nail art. Her nail color was sheer, except for a geographic negative space design on her ring finger featuring black polish.
Read on to see Halle's style close up and from all angles!

The Surprising Way Queen Elizabeth II Is Related to Husband Prince Philip
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's nearly 70-year marriage has been the subject of such speculation that their early days as a couple have been turned into a new Netflix series, The Crown. Although most people know the basics about how the royal couple fell in love, there's a surprising, little-known tidbit that we sometimes forget: Queen Elizabeth and the duke of Edinburgh are cousins. They share the same great-great-grandparents, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who were first cousins themselves. Although that might seem odd today, it was a fairly common practice for the royals back then since many marriages were done to increase influence in state affairs or to ally with foreign powers. Regardless of their familial relation, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's love story is one for the ages.
When Elizabeth's father, King George VI, visited a Naval college in Dartmouth in 1939, he brought his 13-year-old daughter along to take in the sights. While the King attended to business, a cadet named Philip Mountbatten - Elizabeth's third cousin and a Greek prince - was given the task of showing the future queen around. He must have made quite the impression, because Elizabeth was instantly enamored. In a two-page letter sent to author Betty Shew, who was writing a book about Elizabeth's wedding to Philip in 1947, the then-princess described how she first fell in love with Philip:
"The first time I remember meeting Philip was at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in July 1939, just before the war. (We may have met before at the coronation or the Duchess of Kent's wedding, but I don't remember.) I was 13 years of age and he was 18 and a cadet just due to leave. He joined the Navy at the outbreak of war, and I only saw him very occasionally when he was on leave - I suppose about twice in three years. Then when his uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mountbatten, were away he spent various weekends away with us at Windsor. Then he went to the Pacific and Far East for two years."
The couple got married on Nov. 20, 1947, and the rest is history.
The Reason This Woman Has "Decided" to Stay Pregnant For 260 Weeks
Lauren has been pregnant since 2012 . . . with the same baby, because she can't afford to take time off work from her job that doesn't have paid leave . . . so she's just decided to stay pregnant until she racks up enough vacation days to have a baby.
OK, so Lauren's case is impossible, but the message behind her it-would-be-funny-if-it-weren't-true situation is applicable to many moms (and dads) all over the US who don't receive paid leave. This video from the National Partnership For Women and Families seeks to bring light to this issue with a touch of humor and a whole load of truth bombs.
"It's absurd that most US workers - 86 percent - don't have paid family leave through their employers," the caption on the video reads. "And only some are lucky enough to live in the four states that have paid family and medical leave laws. But we can change this." The organization offered a course of action on its website: "Ask your members of Congress to watch the video and then stand up for a robust national paid family and medical leave program."
Do it for yourself. Do it for Lauren.
How a Stranger Kept 1 Mom Alone With Twin Babies From Being Kicked Off a Flight
What was supposed to be a simple flight for Mackenzie Murphy turned into an incredibly long day, and this woman wasn't even traveling with an infant. But the mom sitting a couple of aisles in front of Mackenzie wasn't as lucky, as she was hit with multiple problems while trying to fly alone with her twin babies, who Mackenzie estimates were likely under 6 months old.
Mackenzie described the scenario, explaining that because the flight was packed, airline staff began taking carry-on luggage to store under the plane. "A gate worker took this woman's car seat, meaning she would now have to hold both babies since they weren't old enough to sit up on their own in a seat," Mackenzie shared with the Love What Matters Facebook page. "When she sat down on the plane, a flight attendant immediately told her she couldn't hold both babies, and would have to leave the flight."
Before this mom could gather her babies and her things, a stranger sitting in front of Mackenzie volunteered to hold one of the babies during the entire flight. However, before they could even start their 45-minute flight, the plane ended up being stuck on the runway for two and half hours.
"Without a complaint this woman fed the other woman's baby and burped him," Mackenzie wrote. "Her own daughter started crying. This mom, so calmly, went on to explain to her young daughter that 'Our job is to help other people. This mom is all by herself with no help, and really needs another mom to help.'"
This kind woman continued to restore Mackenzie's faith in humanity as she went on to sing the baby songs and snuggle him as he slept. "My heart still feels fuzzy," she wrote. "Moral of the story is when you see people needing help, do the right thing and help them."
What Happened After a Stranger Snapped This Family's Photo Will Give You Chills
After an incredible encounter with complete strangers, Joyce Rhinehart decided to share her story - and it still sends chills straight through her.
After her grandson's tennis lesson, Joyce took her grandson to Rita's Italian Ice for a treat. As they were about to leave, she noticed a sweet family all enjoying ice cream together and she stopped. "Something urged me to ask them if I could take their picture, which they did not hesitate to agree," she shared on Facebook. "I took this picture and then handed my phone to the young daughter and told her to go ahead and text the picture to their cell phone."
On their way home, Joyce explained to her grandson that this isn't the first time she's offered to capture a sweet family moment for complete strangers so that they can have a special memory. Days later, she looked at her phone and noticed a text message from an unsaved number:
Dear madam, you took our picture in front of Rita's on June 8th. My wife has passed away yesterday and this is the last picture we have together as a family. Please accept my deepest gratitude for your kindness, it means the world to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Joyce continued texting the father and learned that his wife had been sick for the past year. "Never underestimate a simple act of random kindness," she wrote. "My heart is heavy for this sweet family that I don't even know and the tremendous gift that was left to them because I listened to my gut that day. I'm in awe!"
1 Woman Nervously Confronts "Cruel" Kids at Target – and Then Their Mom Showed Up
If you're a parent who has a fear of confrontation, let Mary Katherine Backstorm be your inspiration!
The Southern mom was in the checkout line at Target when she noticed a young boy and girl - roughly 11 or 12 years old - in front of her, snickering at the cashier, who had clearly suffered a "very devastating accident and cranial reconstructive surgery." He had staples in his head and a drooping eyelid, and Backstorm noticed that the kids "were getting their cell phones out and trying to take pictures of him with Snapchat filters" to text to their friends.
"I'm just not very confident sometimes in my adulthood . . . that I can be an adult in situations like this," Backstorm said in a Facebook video, admitting that often these kids intimidate her.
Today, however, the self-proclaimed "super-nonconfrontational" mom, heart racing, set her cart aside and approached the two kids and told them they were being "very cruel" to that man.
"In that moment I realized, 'Yes, yes, I'm an adult,'" she said. "'I can do this. I can take control of the situation and teach them a lesson.'"
The kids apologized, but Backstorm didn't let things end there.
She asked them how they were getting home, and they said their mom was picking them up. She decided to wait with them so she could let her know what happened.
And to her surprise, what "started out just awful" ended in a way that gave her hope.
Although it's better to watch the video to hear Backstorm retell what happened when she confronted the other mom, her final message is one worth repeating:
I just wanted to say to the lady whose kid just acted like a complete butthole in Target that you're a really good mom. Kids can be buttholes some time. If my kids are ever in Target being buttholes or bullies or making fun of people, I hope you do the same thing. It's hard to hear criticisms from other parents or hear your kids are acting contrary to how you know you've raised them, but that's part of them growing up. We all need to be keeping an eye on each other and each other's kids.
Mom's Note to Stranger at McDonald's Who Got Involved When Her Toddler Wouldn't "Go Potty"
A stranger in a McDonald's bathroom overheard a typical fight between a mom and her toddler: the Kansas parent was trying to reason with her 3-year-old to pee before they left to get back in the car.
The stranger listened in as Tiffany Miller tried to explain to her daughter that it was a long drive home and she had to use the potty before they left. She also heard the child explain that she was afraid the toilet was going to flush while she was sitting on it. Despite her mother promising to block the sensor and prevent it from flushing, the little girl wouldn't comply, and promised to make it through the drive home without having an accident.
In a heartfelt thank you to this stranger posted on her Facebook, Tiffany explained what happened when the woman decided to step in. "You told her you would give her a bracelet if she would go potty for Mommy. She perked up and agreed," Tiffany wrote. "I turned to quickly put her on the potty (before she changed her mind). You told her the bracelet would be waiting outside the stall for her. I turned to say thank you, but you were already gone."
When the child finished using the bathroom she found a bracelet and a candy bar waiting outside her stall. "Her eyes lit up as she put the bracelet on after using the bathroom," Tiffany wrote. "We made it home to Wichita safely and she is currently sleeping soundly next to me . . . still wearing the bracelet."
Although the woman was gone before Tiffany could catch her name, she's grateful for this stranger's act of kindness: "I wish I could have thanked you in person, but maybe you will see this. If not, hopefully it inspires someone else to be kind like you were."

Here's What We Know About Black America, Amazon's Answer to HBO's Confederate
On Sunday night, Twitter was not only abuzz with Game of Thrones spoilers but also with hundreds of people tweeting the hashtag #NoConfederate. The social media movement was sparked by HBO's announcement that Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are working on a new drama, Confederate, which takes place in an alternate reality where slavery still exists. Although HBO is refusing to pull the show, there is a silver lining: Amazon has teamed up with producer Will Packer for their own alt-history series, and it sounds much more promising.
The Story
The drama, titled Black America, takes place in an alternate history where African-Americans newly freed from the tyranny of Southern slave owners take over the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama as reparation for slavery. With land of their own, which they dub New Colonia, they're free to live in the sovereign nation and shape their own destiny. However, 150 years later, the tumultuous relationship they've maintained with their northern neighbor, the United States, faces the ultimate test when America begins to rapidly fall apart, while New Colonia reaches new heights on the world stage.
In Deadline's recent interview with Packer, he emphasized that it's still too early to say exactly what Black America's message will be but that it will answer the questions of "what if reparations were given, what would this country and that alternate country look like today, how would Americans look, our communities, relations, I think that there definitely is a message about how we co-exist today where that didn't happen, there weren't reparations, and you still have black Americans who are suffering from the effects of slavery in various ways." According to Packer, the show will also "speak to where we are now and the mistakes this country has made and things we should do going forward."
The Production Team
Packer - who's produced Girls Trip, Roots, and Straight Outta Compton, among many, many others - is developing the drama for Amazon together with Peabody Award-winning The Boondocks creator and Black Jesus cocreator Aaron McGruder. Their involvement in the project was initially announced via Deadline back in February, but at the time, the producers were keeping almost all of the details about Black America's storyline under wraps; the only thing they let slip is that it would be similar to Amazon's other alternate-history series, The Man in the High Castle (which takes place in a world where Hitler won World War II).
The Release Date
A solid release date hasn't been locked down just yet, but following HBO's Confederate reveal, Packer hinted that Black America is further along than we might think. "It felt this was the appropriate time to make sure that audiences and the creative community knew that there was a project that preexisted, and we are pretty far down the road with it," he recently told Deadline, noting that the show is in "very, very active development" with McGruder "off and writing."

11 Things You Didn't Know About Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's Royal Relationship

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary this year, which is a pretty amazing feat regardless of the fact that they're royalty. Whether you think you know a lot about the couple or are hankering for more details about their decades-long marriage, we've got a handful of facts about the royal couple that might surprise you.
- For starters, they're related. That's right: Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are actually second cousins once removed through King Christian IX of Denmark, and third cousins through their great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. Interestingly enough, Victoria married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in 1840.
- They met when Elizabeth was just a little girl. The future couple were first introduced in 1934, at the wedding of Philip's cousin Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark to Prince George, Duke of Kent (Elizabeth's uncle). At the time, she was just 8 years old. They saw each other again three years later, but it was during a meeting at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth in July 1939 - Elizabeth was 13 and Philip was 18 - that they fell in love and began to exchange letters.
- Elizabeth's dad gave his blessing for their marriage (on one condition). Philip asked King George VI for his daughter's hand in marriage in 1946, and the king granted his permission under the condition that a formal engagement was delayed until Elizabeth turned 21 the following April; both he and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, felt that their daughter was "too young," and were disappointed that she wanted to marry the first man she met.

- Their betrothal came with a bit of controversy. Philip and Elizabeth's engagement was officially announced in July 1947. The British public largely dismissed him as "a German" and the queen mother reportedly referred to him as "the Hun." Many of the king's advisors "did not think him good enough" for Elizabeth; he was foreign-born, didn't have money, and his three sisters all married German princes (some with Nazi ties).
- Philip abandoned his royal titles before marrying Elizabeth. Born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, Philip renounced those titles in 1957 in an attempt to gain favorable media coverage and blend a bit more seamlessly into his fiancée's family. He took on the style of Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, adopting the surname of his mother's British family. He also converted from Greek Orthodoxy to Anglicanism.
- Some of their family members were not allowed at the wedding. Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II tied the knot at Westminster Abbey on Nov. 20, 1947. Being that it was just two years after World War II ended, it was not cool for Philip's German family members (including his sisters) to be invited to the wedding. Also not invited was Elizabeth's uncle, the former King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne in December 1936.
- Elizabeth originally took her husband's name. On the morning of their wedding, Philip was made the Duke of Edinburgh. Upon tying the knot, Elizabeth took Philip's title and became Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh.
- They started a family pretty quickly. Elizabeth gave birth to the couple's first child, Prince Charles, on Nov. 14, 1948, almost a year to the day of their wedding. Their welcomed a daughter, Princess Anne, two years later.

- They didn't always live with their kids. Between 1949 and 1951, Philip was stationed in Malta while serving as a Royal Navy officer. He and Elizabeth lived at Villa Guardamangia, the rented home of his uncle Lord Mountbatten, for several months at a time. Their two young children, Prince Charles and Princess Anne, stayed in Britain.
- Philip was the bearer of bad news upon King George VI's death. When Elizabeth's father passed away after a long illness in 1952, she and Philip had just embarked on a royal tour of Australia and New Zealand with a stop in Kenya. They were at their Kenyan home, Sagana Lodge, when the news of George's death reached them. It was Philip who told Elizabeth that her father had died - and that she was now queen.
- Philip didn't deal well with Elizabeth's rise to power. After King George's death, Philip gave up his career as a naval officer to support his wife's new royal duties and was known to butt heads with the Buckingham Palace staff. There were arguments about whether or not Elizabeth would keep his surname after she took the throne, but both the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Elizabeth's grandmother, Queen Mary, voted in favor to keep the family name as House of Windsor (rather than House of Mountbatten). This was also likely due to the fact that in the days after George's death, Philip's uncle, Louis "Dickie" Mountbatten, was overheard triumphantly declaring that "the House of Mountbatten now reigned," which understandably angered Queen Mary.
In April 1952, the queen mother issued a declaration that Windsor would continue to be the royal name. Philip, meanwhile, was pissed: he privately complained of being "nothing but a bloody amoeba," and railed against being "the only man in the country not allowed to give his name to his own children." But after both Queen Mary's death in 1953 and Churchill's resignation in 1955, the queen mother reversed the decision, aware of both Philip's frustration and the impending birth of their second son. In 1960, she issued an Order of Council stating that Elizabeth and Philip had adopted the surname Mountbatten-Windsor for their male-line descendants, saying, "The Queen has had this in mind for a long time and it is close to her heart." Their baby boy, Prince Andrew, was born just a week later. Today, it acts as a sort of optional last name for those in the family.

Mom's Honest Post Reveals the 1 Thing Parents Forget While School-Supply Shopping
As a child, shopping for school supplies was one of the most exciting activities. Between the brightly colored binders, perfectly pointed crayons, and that initial feeling of organization, it was always something to look forward to. However, for parents, that thrill isn't quite the same. With long lists from schools, sold-out items, and an expensive price tag, there's potential for a lot of complaining.
Now, one mom is calling out why it's so important for parents to remain positive while back-to-school shopping, even if the store did run out of the exact "green plastic no prong folder" on the list. Rachel Martin, mommy blogger at Finding Joy, penned the honest post after shopping with her kids.
"They listen," she opened her post. "I was in Target today picking up some last-minute school supplies and it was just disappointing. I don't know if it was the day or time or what - but it felt like it was just full of complaining. Complaining about the notebooks or pencil count or the number of crayons. Maybe I just stepped in the wrong aisle at the wrong time."
Rachel explained that she totally understands the frustration, but parents cannot forget what brought them to these stores in the first place: their children and their education.
"If we want them excited about school doesn't it start with us?" she continued. "Doesn't it start with us deciding to not complain about supplies but instead build excitement over what will fill those notebooks? Or what those crayons will color? Or calculators compute? I get that it costs money, I get that. I get that the lists are crazy long and with that one green plastic no prong folder that sells out on week one. I get that money can be tight. But no matter what - your, our, words matter."
"Those vivid Crayons markers will tell stories and the hand sanitizer keep them healthy and the grid paper will provide order and the erasers will correct," Rachel added.
In addition to touching on the importance of our children's well-being and excitement for school, Rachel called out the obvious importance of education and how we're so lucky to be b*tching about school supplies because there are some people who aren't as lucky.
"When I was in Haiti there was no education," she wrote. "Parents worked many jobs so their children could get a chance to attend school. Education matters. No matter what way - public, virtual, private, home school - education changes our children's lives. So be excited about those supplies."
She closed her note with one final reminder: "Love of learning starts with you."

2017 Is Extra Exciting For These Pregnant Stars
We're all hoping for good things to happen in the second half of 2017, but some stars are expecting more than just success and happiness - they're also expecting babies. Beyoncé announced her pregnancy in February and recently gave birth to twins, as did George and Amal Clooney, who named their new bundles of joy Alexander and Ella. A crop of other stars still have buns in the oven, like first-time moms Serena Williams and Julia Stiles, so we can't wait to see the rest of Hollywood's newest additions when they arrive!
Jennifer Aniston's Airport Shoes Are a Summer Staple She Wears Everywhere
One thing we've noticed about Jennifer Aniston's style over the years is that she sticks to the basics she loves. That includes red carpet jumpsuits, boyfriend jeans, plain white tees, and espadrille shoes. When she stepped out at LAX for a flight, Jen was wearing two of the aforementioned wardrobe staples.
She tucked a silk printed blouse into her go-to distressed denim and stood tall in a pair of wedges that are perfectly neutral for the season. Jen could easily finish a Summer dress with these heels, but they work for casual ensembles too. Scroll to catch a glimpse at her full look, which includes the Mark Cross leather box bag of the moment, then shop Jen's summertime sandal of choice.
1 Annoying Thing From the Jon/Daenerys Scene You Only Noticed If You're a Woman
One of the great feats of Game of Thrones is that for the hour every Sunday I spend watching each episode, I'm completely transported from reality and taken deep into the wild world of Westeros. When I was watching "The Queen's Justice," however, one scene felt all too real. Like, ripped-from-the-headlines, why-am-I-still-protesting-this-sh*t real.
It was the much-anticipated meeting of Jon Snow and Daenerys, and it went a little something like this:
Missandei: "You stand in the presence of Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, rightful heir to the Iron Throne, rightful queen of the Andals and the First Men, protector of the Seven Kingdoms, the Mother of Dragons, the Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the Unburnt, the Breaker of Chains."
Davos: "This is Jon Snow."
(Awkward silence . . .)
Davos: "He's King of the North."
The long-awaited scene garnered lots of chatter on social media, namely that the whole laundry list of Daenerys's titles is getting to be rather annoying, as is Daenerys herself, and about how refreshing it is that Jon Snow doesn't concern himself with accolades. He's the real deal.
Did no one else see what I saw?
Because I was watching the most obvious metaphor for sexism in the workplace, the most stereotypical man-versus-woman job interview in fake history.
Here's this orphan girl, who spent the better part of her life being subjugated by men, toiling endlessly to rise up and do some good along the way (ahem, she freed a bunch of slaves). She's now in a position of power, backed by a killer résumé. She's a working mom with three unruly toddlers, she's proud of her accomplishments, and she isn't about to be all modest about it.
And here's Jon Snow, a bastard with no birthright, yes, but a man who apparently needs no introduction just the same.
Sure, Daenerys spent a good deal of time on "bend-the-knee" semantics when there are justly some bigger undead fish to fry, but before everyone writes off Dany as just another bossy b*tch, consider the context.
Daenerys hasn't seen Jon Snow in action - she doesn't know what he's done or what he's gone through to get here, that he took a knife to the heart and straight-up died for his people. At this point, she's meeting yet another man who's probably planning to betray, rape, or murder her. ("So many men have tried to kill me, I don't remember all their names," she aptly puts it.) She has good reason to stand her ground and push for what she believes is justly hers.
Anyone who thinks she shouldn't needs to stop and ask themselves why.
I love Jon Snow as much as the next GOT fan, but before everyone starts lifting him up on their shoulders while piling mud atop Daenerys, remember that they both want the same thing, whether they admit it or not. They want to rule. Jon might seem above titles, but he certainly didn't seem willing to let his go.
Perhaps I read into this and the bitter realities of our male-dominated world had no place in that intimidating meeting room in Dragonstone, but I can't help but think that none of these eye-roll-emoji-filled tweets about Daenerys would be making the rounds if she weren't a woman.
Prince Philip Is Officially Retired! The Royal Attends His Last Public Engagement
Prince Philip is officially on retirement time. The 96-year-old royal attended his last official public engagement on Wednesday when he took part in a parade to mark the finale of the 1664 Global Challenge, which raises funds and awareness for The Royal Marines Charity, at Buckingham Palace. Despite the pouring rain, Philip met with representatives from the organization, veterans, and cadets before receiving the 1664 Global Challenge baton and three cheers from the crowd. The event certainly holds special significance to the prince, who was appointed captain general in succession to Queen Elizabeth II's late father, King George VI, nearly 64 years ago.
Buckingham Palace announced Prince Philip's last duty in a statement in July, saying, "The Duke of Edinburgh will no longer undertake his own program of public engagements. The Captain General's Parade will bring His Royal Highness's individual program to a conclusion, although he may choose to attend certain events, alongside The Queen, from time to time." The royal first announced his decision to retire in May with full support from the queen. Over the past 70 years, Philip has carried out royal duties on behalf of over 780 organizations.
Kim Kardashian Doesn't Need Instagram to Pose For NSFW Photos
The Kardashian-Jenner clan really love going bra-less, don't they? On Tuesday, Kim Kardashian hit the town with Kendall Jenner in an NSFW outfit. While her half-sister flaunted her long legs in a floral dress, the mother of North and Saint had no qualms walking around NYC in a sheer top and camouflage shorts. Let's just say, her revealing outfit left little to the imagination. And it definitely can't be a coincidence that she pulled the same stunt in the big city exactly one year ago. Of course, we wouldn't expect anything less from Kim. Her sexy selfies on social media are always fogging up our screens.
It's Not Adriana Lima's Sexiest Dresses That'll Catch Your Eye - It's the Way She Poses in Them
Brazilian model Adriana Lima might have walked the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show wearing tiny lingerie for the past 17 years, but in real life, she doesn't always go all out, choosing instead to show off a calculated amount of skin at red carpets, parties, and TV appearances.
More times than none, she opts to show off her muscular legs with a high slit - and we mean high, the kind that involves wearing no undergarments. Other times, she chooses to reveal her rock-hard abs with crop tops and bralettes. And in a few instances, she has walked the red carpet in low-back numbers that show a little more skin as she walks away. Whatever it is, Adriana nails the right balance, still looking elegant. See for yourself by scrolling through her sexiest looks through the past 11 years.

5 Ways Sleep-Away Camp Prepared Me For the Real World
During the summer of 2010, I took the seven-hour bus ride from Westchester, NY, to Middle-of-Nowhere, ME, for my first Summer away at sleep-away camp. While I sat curled up against the window, sobbing as the bus bumped down a dirt road, all the girls around me were out of their seats, screaming, singing, and throwing candy at each other across the bus. Clearly, this was quite a different setting from what my shy, quiet 9-year-old self was used to, and I had a strong feeling that the whole camp thing wasn't for me.
At the time, I couldn't have imagined that these rowdy girls would become my Summer sisters for the next seven years and that the place I was heading would become my second home.
I always cherished my time at camp, but it wasn't until my years at camp were over that I truly came to appreciate all the lessons it had taught me. Somehow, within that isolated bubble, I learned more about the real world than I did anywhere else throughout my childhood. Camp helped mold me into the young woman I am today, and my camp experiences continue to influence me as I grow older.
Here are five of the most useful lessons that I took away from my Summers at camp and that will serve your little camper for the rest of their life:
1. You need to be your own biggest advocate.
Camp was the first time in my life that I ever had to stand on my own two feet. This was daunting initially, especially as I encountered problems in the first few weeks, like getting into arguments in the shower line or not liking certain activities on my schedule. From 3,000 miles away, my parents could be of little help to me, so it became my responsibility to voice my own views and try to make things better. Speaking up for myself and learning to deal with these issues on my own dramatically improved my confidence and showed me that I could be in control of my own well-being.
2. The greatest relationships are built when you put down the electronics.
Going for two months without electronics is one of the greatest gifts camp gave me. It brought me and my camp friends so much closer because it allowed us to enjoy each other's company free of online distractions like video games or social media. Being at camp was therefore a real wake-up call for me in terms of realizing how much of my life at home was lived through a screen. My experiences that first Summer encouraged me to make changes during the school year, and I began spending more of my time with my friends at home actually talking rather than staying glued to a TV or computer.
3. It's always OK to ask for help.
As much as going to camp is about learning to be independent, it is also about being a part of a community where you can lean on those around you. Living away from home at such a young age can be difficult, but knowing that the people around you are in the exact same position makes things all the more comforting. Whenever I had a hard day or missed home, it was my fellow campers who cheered me up and talked me through it. Asking for help from people I had just met required a good deal of vulnerability, and yet without this help, I don't know that I would have made it through my first few Summers at camp. Through receiving help from the girls around me, I realized that none of us are ever alone, and that it can serve you to let your guard down and trust those in your community.
4. Try new things for the fun of it, not to be the best.
Only at camp can you go from shooting a bow to rehearsing a play to making a silver pendant in a single morning. Having such a wide range of activities to do each day seemed exciting to most campers, but my 9-year-old self had always shied away from trying new things. An anxious perfectionist, I was afraid of doing any activity that I wasn't the best at, and I regularly pretended I was sick or injured to get out of my activities that first year. With encouragement from my counselors and friends, however, I learned to be more comfortable with not being the best and to take myself less seriously.
5. Be appreciative of all the time you've got.
So far removed from the outside world, time at camp seems to slow down day to day, and yet everyone is always aware that their time at camp is limited. As I grew to love camp more, I always feared the end of each Summer and the eventual end of my time as a camper. I was able to cope with this fear by remembering how lucky I was to have this experience, so I tried to express my gratitude to those around me as often as I could. This practice helped me live in the present rather than worrying about the end, and I continue to use it in the real world to reduce my stress and put things into perspective.
Game of Thrones: This Is Why Jaime's Savvy Battle Tactic Seemed So Familiar
Warning: Spoilers for Game of Thrones below!
The third episode of Game of Thrones, "The Queen's Justice," has a few shockingly memorable moments (like Daenerys and Jon Snow FINALLY meeting, for starters), but the quiet scene in the episode's final minutes is by far its most affecting. The celebration of Daenerys's Unsullied army easily taking Casterly Rock from the Lannisters is short-lived, since Jaime fakes them out by having Euron's fleet burn most of the Unsullied's ships and moves almost all of the Lannister forces to Highgarden instead. There, they quickly overpower House Tyrell, and Jaime has a tense one-on-one chat with Lady Olenna. It's during this conversation that Jaime reveals that he actually stole the savvy tactical move from one of his former enemies: Robb Stark.
After Olenna notes that Jaime took his army "and went where they weren't," he replies, "As Robb Stark did to me at Whispering Wood. There are always lessons in failures." (Which prompts a signature quip from Olenna: "You must be very wise by now.") The incident he references is the Battle of the Whispering Wood, which takes place in season one.
As you might recall, Catelyn Stark negotiates with Lord Walder Frey to allow Robb's army to pass across the Trident at the Twins, as long as Robb agrees to marry one of his daughters. They strike a deal (which is eventually broken and leads to the blood-soaked Red Wedding), and the Stark forces cross the river and split in two, with one half moving south to fight Tywin Lannister's army in the Battle of the Green Fork, and the other half going on in secret to confront Jaime.
Since Tywin thinks the whole Stark army is on its way to attack him at Green Fork, he has most of his men at the ready. The Lannisters defeat the Starks, but it's not until it's too late that Tywin realizes Robb outsmarted him. Jaime, unaware of what happened to his father, is lured into the Whispering Wood by the rest of Robb's forces, northwest of Riverrun, and is swiftly defeated by the Starks. He's soon taken prisoner, and the Lannister army's presence within the Riverlands is almost entirely destroyed.
Although Jaime pulls the same clever maneuver in season seven's third episode, he's going to need a lot more tricks up his sleeve to defeat the Dragon Queen once and for all. For her part, Dany will have to learn from her own failures next week, judging from the nail-biting preview for episode four.
12 Golden Rules of Decluttering
Has your place been looking a little . . . clogged up lately? Well, it may be time to do a little cleaning up! However, if you've been following these rules below, you wouldn't need a decluttering session as your home is guaranteed to be clutter-free.
1. Get rid of duplicates
If you have duplicates lying around, get rid of them if they are not necessary. Keep the better duplicate and trash or donate the other.
2. Get rid of things you haven't used in a year
So you keep telling yourself that you'll use it eventually, but if you haven't touched it in a year, chances are that you're not going to in the near future. Do your home a favor and get rid of the items that aren't getting any use.
3. Digitize nostalgic items
Do you have too many nostalgic items that you can't seem to get yourself to give away? Take photos of them and then get rid of them - you'll be able to keep them around forever without cluttering up your space.
4. Don't keep items out of guilt
I'm sure you have a thing or two around the house that you keep out of guilt. Perhaps it's a sweater sweet aunt Betty knitted for you for Christmas that you never wear or that fancy dress you splurged way too much on. Time to be brutal and get rid of them all.
5. Put things back where they belong
It's easy to just leave things lying around, but that's how clutter builds up. After you're done using something, immediately put it back where it belongs so you won't procrastinate.
6. And find a home for them
Make sure every item in your home has a place, whether it be a plastic container or an under-the-bed organizer. And remember: a pile of items is not a true place for your things.
7. Sell, give away, donate, upcycle, or throw away
When assessing things you want to get rid of, start by seeing if you can make some of your money back by selling it. Here are some avenues for selling different types of clutter.
If you don't think it's worth the effort to sell, give it away to people you know who will use it. Perhaps to your family and friends, or even your Facebook network. You can also choose to donate it to get a tax write-off.
8. Don't keep items you wouldn't buy now
Are there some items you have that you would never buy now? Perhaps you should take a good hard look at them and figure out why you need them now and if you can do without them.
9. Opt for covered furniture
If you have a clutter problem, choose furniture that is covered, such as a closet with a sliding door instead of open shelves. This will help your place look cleaner and more organized.
10. Don't forget storage under your bed
There's a lot of real estate in your home that's not being put to good use; one that people often forget about is under-the-bed storage.
11. Think tall
Use up all the space in your home to make the most of it, including the vertical space. The more space you have for your stuff, the less likely it's going to get cluttered up.

Princess Diana Has 2 Handbags Named After Her - and They're Still Being Sold Today
If you're a fashion girl, you're probably familiar with the classic Lady Dior bag and the signature Gancio clasp spotted on Salvatore Ferragamo Lady D chain-strap designs. But you might not have realized that these two creations were named after and popularized by the late Princess Diana.
While she collected an assortment of luxury handbags throughout the years, Diana's black quilted Dior satchel with gold hardware and her many Ferragamo crossbody pouches became iconic. Today, both brands still market these silhouettes with ties to the beloved royal. Read on to see Princess Diana wearing them, then shop the modernized versions.
Hong Kong's It Girl Wore a Wedding Gown That Has the Entire Internet Buzzing
Destination weddings take on a life of their own, and Feiping Chang's was out of this world. The fashion influencer said her "I do's" to Lincoln Li in Capri, where she walked down the aisle in a strapless Giambattista Valli dress. She worked with the designer to create the dramatic gown and it featured layer upon layers of tulle. The poufy dress, which resembled a giant cloud, was only one of the extravagant parts of this It girl's wedding.
For the reception, Fei switched into a floral high-low dress that was similar to her welcome dinner look. The couple entered into a space filled with dangling wisteria and guests were treated to a sunset view during their meal. As far as destination weddings go (people are still talking about it), Hong Kong's socialite nailed it with her Italian location and fabulous outfits.

Being a Mom Really F*cks Up Your Self-Esteem, According to a Study
Before you have a few kids, it's safe to say many women think being a mom is all sunshine and roses filled with awesome Instagrams and teeny tiny baby clothes. But according to a Norwegian study, your self-esteem can really plummet once you become a new mom.
In an effort to understand the emotional and physical aspects of motherhood, researchers conducted a study that looked at 85,000 new mamas starting in pregnancy until the their kid hit 3 years old and asked them questions about how being a mom affected their self-esteem. They were asked to fill out a questionnaire periodically about how they were feeling when it comes to self-image and happiness, and the results are sadly negative.
The data showed that women's self-esteem generally decreased during pregnancy, increased for a six-month period after childbirth, and then gradually decreased until the child's third birthday.
Thankfully it's not all completely bad news. While it's definitely true that new moms' self-esteem took a pretty big initial hit, having a few kids didn't affect moms' self-esteem in the long run. And of course, things like age and their relationship with their partner weren't factored in. It's also important to note that no questionnaires were given after the baby's third birthday, so fingers crossed that self-esteem can only go up from there.

Game of Thrones: What Will Jaime Do With Joffrey's Death Reveal?
Diana Rigg's time on Game of Thrones has sadly come to an end, but at least she got to go out with one of the most epic mic drops the show has ever seen. In Sunday's episode, "The Queen's Justice," Lady Olenna downs her poisoned wine like a boss and proceeds to use her last few moments on earth to tell Jaime Lannister that she is responsible for his son Joffrey's death by poison at his own wedding back in season four.
To his immense credit, Jaime digests this news (with emotions playing across his face), but he still lets Lady Olenna succumb to the poison rather than running her through with his sword right here on the spot. But what will he do now?
Take It Out on the Remaining Tyrells
After Mace, Margaery, and Loras are killed at the Great Sept of Baelor explosion, Olenna says that Cersei took away her "future," but Olenna can't have been the very last of the entire bloodline.
In the books, there are many other Tyrell cousins, stemming from several places: Olenna's brother-in-law Moryn's children, Olenna's daughters (Mace's sisters), and Mace's two other children, Willas and Garlan (brothers to Loras and Margaery). These characters have not been mentioned on the TV series, but back in season three, episode four, one of Margaery's handmaidens calls Olenna "Nana," so clearly there are at least some Tyrell cousins lurking around.
Jaime may decide any remaining Tyrells need to pay for the crimes of their grandmother and go on some kind of revenge rampage.
Appeal to Cersei's Better Nature
Will Jaime tell Cersei what he has learned? It's hard to say. What good would that do now? Cersei has moved on from Joffrey's death, plus she doesn't need an excuse to hate on her brother Tyrion - blaming him for Joffrey's death was just the latest in a long line of reasons Cersei hates Tyrion. But maybe Jaime will try to reunite his family anyway, telling Cersei about Lady Olenna's confession in the hope of convincing her to extend an olive branch to their brother and invite him back into the fold.
This seems unlikely, though. We can't really see her forgiving Tyrion, let alone giving him the apology he definitely deserves.
Fight For Tyrion
Jaime doesn't hate Tyrion the way his sister does. In fact, Jaime actually loves his younger brother, so maybe Jaime will tell Cersei about Lady Olenna and won't ask if he can invite Tyrion back; maybe he'll just do it whether his sister approves or not.
Go to Dragonstone Himself
This is most certainly a long shot, but perhaps this revelation about Joffrey will open Jaime's eyes to what monsters his family members are and he'll flee to join up with Tyrion and fight against his sister. Like we said, long shot. If Jaime has not yet realized his family is full of monsters, he never will. Or maybe he has realized it, but he just doesn't care. Either way, it doesn't seem like he's going to leave Cersei's side anytime soon.
Reach Out to Tyrion
This seems like the likeliest scenario. Jaime won't tell Cersei, he won't invite Tyrion to rejoin them, and he won't go to Tyrion himself - but he will at least send a raven to his brother informing him that he knows for sure Tyrion is innocent and that he's sorry for everything that has happened. Jaime is mostly an honorable man, so it would be weird if he does nothing with this latest revelation.
Nothing
It would be a little weird for Game of Thrones to give Lady Olenna such an outstanding send-off then have Jaime do nothing with the information he has just been given, but stranger things have happened. Perhaps he'll just keep the information to himself, seeing it futile to either tell Cersei or try to mend fences with Tyrion. You know, come to think of it, that might actually be his best course of action.
