This 1997 Clip Perfectly Shows How Princess Diana Changed the Narrative About Modern Feminism
In the 20 years since the shocking and tragic death of Princess Diana in August 1997, people have continued to be obsessed with every facet of her life - and for good reason. The 36-year-old princess inspired people with her charity work that her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, still carry out, as well as her powerful response to Prince Charles's affair. And as a 1997 clip from BBC Newsnight shows, one of Princess Diana's most lasting legacies included making women around the world feel like they, too, could be empowered and independent, even as they raised children and were married.
The 1997 clip, which features then journalist but now famous chef Nigella Lawson, explains how Princess Diana's attitude toward her marriage, her children, and even herself "epitomized the modern, self-invented woman." Lawson adds that "for many women, this showed that times really had changed, and that a wife, even one as traditionally brought up as Diana, was no longer prepared to play a subservient role, or even pretend to do so." You can watch the full clip ahead.
Princess Diana, who was so forthcoming about her flaws and struggles, still evoked a fairy-tale image for many women - creating a new version of feminism that was both relatable as well as aspirational. "Her struggles with her own appearance, her difficulties with her body image, and her bulimia made a huge number of women identify with her," Lawson said. "It made her seem as if she had the same worries and problems as the rest of us, as indeed she did. The fact that such a great beauty could feel the same things, made in turn, ordinary women feel better about themselves." It's become even clearer since Princess Diana's death just how much she meant to women around the world.

The Reason Princess Diana Never Wanted to Become Queen Is Extremely Touching
Princess Diana grew up around royalty. She was born Lady Diana Spencer (her family had British nobility with royal ancestry), and she became a princess when she married Prince Charles in 1981. But despite her various titles and obvious connection to the monarchy, it turns out that Diana never had any interest in one day becoming queen. As soon as she became an official member of the royal family, she majorly repaired what some people considered to be a huge divide between the British royals and the country's common people. She was affectionate, she was personable, and she deeply cared about the health and safety of others. And it was this passion that was her sole reason for not wanting to be anything other than the people's princess.
Diana spoke about why she never saw herself becoming queen during her infamous BBC interview with Martin Bashir in 1995. "I'd like to be a queen of people's hearts, but I don't see myself being queen of this country," she said. "I don't think many people would want me to be queen, and when I say many people, I mean the establishment that I'm married into. They've decided that I'm a nonstarter, because I do things different, because I don't go by a rule book, because I lead from the heart and not the head. And albeit that's gotten me into trouble in my work, but someone's gotta go out there and love people."
Why the Firefighter Who Responded to Diana's Car Crash Thought She Would Survive
Twenty years after Princess Diana's devastating death, the firefighter who responded to her car crash is speaking publicly for the first time. During an interview with The Sun, Xavier Gourmelon opened up about that horrific night at the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris that he says will "stay with him forever." Even though the car was a mess when he arrived to the scene, one of the most shocking revelations is that he actually thought she would survive.
"We just dealt with it like any road accident," he said, adding that he didn't initially realize he was treating the royal. "We got straight to work to see who needed help and who was alive." When he found Diana, he says she was "on the floor in the back moving slightly." "Diana said to me, 'My God, what's happened?' I could see she had a slight injury to her right shoulder but, other than that, there was nothing significant," he added. "There was no blood on her at all."
After pulling her out of the Mercedes, Xavier says, Diana suffered cardiac arrest, but he was able to resuscitate her. "I massaged her heart and a few seconds later she started breathing again," he said. "It was a relief of course because, as a first responder, you want to save lives - and that's what I thought I had done." Even though he thought she would be OK, Diana later succumbed to massive internal injuries in the hospital. "It was very upsetting," he added. "As far as I knew when she was in the ambulance she was alive and I expected her to live."
These Very '90s Photos of the Flatliners Cast Will Remind You Why You Love the Original
If you freaked the f*ck out after watching the disturbing trailer for Flatliners starring Ellen Page and Nina Dobrev, we don't blame you. The reboot looks just as thrilling and haunting as the 1990 original, which follows five medical students who try to get proof of the afterlife by briefly stopping their hearts. Naturally, things don't go according to plan, and the ensuing visions they experience are part of what makes the first Flatliners still so creepy over two decades later. Well, that and the movie's A-list cast. If you need a quick refresher on who played who before the new one hits theaters on Sept. 29, we're here to help.
9 Ways Prince William Is Keeping His Mother's Memory Alive Within His Own Family
Prince William was just 15 years old when his mother, Princess Diana, was tragically killed in a car accident in August 1997. Now that he and his brother Harry are adults, they've been opening up more and more about how their mother's death has impacted their lives. Recently, William revealed that what perhaps upsets him most about her absence is that she never got to meet his wife, Kate Middleton, or their kids, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. "I would love her to have met Catherine and to have seen the children grow up," he told British GQ. "It makes me sad that she won't, that they will never know her."
In addition to more modern parenting traditions like bringing his children on royal engagements, sharing official birthday portraits, and making sure George and Charlotte lead lives that are as normal as possible, William has also made sure to honor his mother's legacy in other, smaller ways, from where he lives to the services he uses to his choice of gifts for Kate Middleton. Keep reading to see nine of them now.
17 Years Later, Thalia and Tommy Mottola Continue to Prove Their Love Is Strong
Thalia and Tommy Mottola have been married for almost 17 years, and after two kids and nine Thalia albums, the couple are going strong, always right by each other's side.
Fun fact: the two were actually set up by Gloria Estefan's husband, Emilio Estefan. "He kept talking to me about a guy that he knew and I should meet him because we're like two drops of water and he kept saying the same thing to Tommy. I was like, 'What am I going to do with a guy who just got divorced and has kids?' and he was like, 'What am I going to do with a singer and an actress?'" she told HuffPost in 2011. "I was in New York for just one night, so we met for drinks and the rest is history." Clearly, Thalia and Tommy fell in love at first sight, but the two work hard at their relationship, with Thalia saying respecting each other and developing memories together are keys to their success. Their love is endless, and it totally shows in these photos.

The Dos and Don'ts For Entry-Level Job Seekers
Landing your first entry-level job after college is no small feat: it can take plenty of time, discipline, and confidence to get your foot in the door. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed and in need of direction or you feel confident in your search, it's always good to hear pointers from people who have been in the same position you're in now. We took a look at a Quora thread that shed light on important things to do and not to do during this transitional period in your life.
1. Do your research.
Landing an interview during your grueling job search is an amazing feeling - but the work doesn't stop there. Well before your interview, you should start preparing as many notes as possible about the company and the interviewer you'll be meeting. "In order to be well prepared for an interview, make sure you know the ins and outs of your company first. Look at the company website, research their clients, and check out their social media presence - anything to ensure you're fully versed on the position and the company. That way, you can answer each question thoroughly, and more importantly, tie your answers into the goals of the company," says Josh Tolan.
2. Don't wait for a job offer to jump-start your career.
When jobs seem to be few and far between, it's easy to get discouraged and feel as though you have no control. A good piece of advice is that you don't have to have a job offer to get your career started. "Say you're a newly minted journalism grad (for example) - you've got to get out there and start building your journalism résumé now, even if you haven't been offered a job. Start a blog, get involved in industry organizations, volunteer your writing services - create your own opportunities. And this advice applies across industries," says Charles Purdy. Get motivated by researching the backgrounds of people you admire in your field. They had to start somewhere, too.
3. Do develop networking skills.
In other words, talk to as many people in your field as possible, keep your professional online profiles up-to-date, and keep in contact with any former colleague or manager who could later serve as a reference. As Charles Purdy notes, you should "be smart about networking and your online profile - looking for a job isn't just about searching online and pressing that 'apply' button. After that, you've got to do some research and work your network to find an 'in' at the company." Whatever you do, don't burn bridges with any personal or professional contacts - you'll be exposed to more opportunities and potential success.
4. Don't think your online presence doesn't matter.
If ever there were a time when your online profiles mattered, it's now - especially during a job search. How you portray yourself on social media says a lot about you, and you don't want to let that be the make-or-break factor that sets you a step below another job candidate. "The fact is, the majority of employers will look you up online before even interviewing you. Make sure you have a thorough, professional online presence. Consider creating a professional blog or website to showcase what you know. Share your thoughts and opinions on industry topics, and share your work, your résumé, and anything else that can help better establish your brand," says Josh Tolan. Take the time to delete anything from your sites that could hurt the personal brand you're aiming to establish.
5. Do treat your job search as a full-time job itself.
Candace Williams puts it simply: "Hustle. Finding a job is a full-time job. If someone were to ask you, 'What did you do to find a job this week?' you should have a long answer that includes time sending résumés/cover letters, networking events, cold calls, informational interviews, research, and time crafting your portfolio/interview materials." It's not always easy, but your hard work will eventually pay off, and you'll definitely thank yourself later for putting in all those hours that led to your success.
6. Don't make your cover letter and résumé all about you.
While the main purpose of your résumé is to highlight your personal experience, when employers view it, they're really thinking about themselves and the company. "It's important to remember the cover letter and résumé are about what you can do for the employer, not the other way around," says Josh Tolan. "Showcase the skills you have that are most relevant to your prospective employer, and keep the focus on the company's mission and goals." This means that, yes, you should tweak your cover letter every time you send it out to a different company. It's more time consuming, but you're much more likely to hear back if you tailor your materials to the specific company rather than repeatedly sending out a generic summary of your past work experience. In each cover letter, mention something you admire about the company and how a specific skill you have could benefit that aspect.
7. Do have core values.
As Candace Williams notes, you should look for "a job you're passionate about and fits your core values." A prospective employer will be able to see through you if you truly aren't interested in the company. While you shouldn't be too choosy and limit yourself, you should have a set idea of the types of companies you're striving to work for. "If you're dropping random lines everywhere hoping for anything, you won't show the focus or passion companies want to see. Figure out what you want as a person and how this should manifest itself in your work."
8. Don't assume blind submissions won't be read.
You might feel stressed when looking through the seemingly endless posts on sites like Craigslist and Monster, but many companies do use those as reliable forms of application, and they will read your submissions. You've probably heard similar things as Candace Williams: "someone told me I should stop sending resumes via online forms because no one reads them. They are wrong. The key to Craigslist and online job hunting is to apply early," and make sure your "application has evidence you've thoroughly researched the company and will go the extra mile." Don't write off a job posting just because you don't have a direct contact.
9. Do play up any relevant skills that relate to the job.
While you don't want to keep the focus all about you, you also don't want to forget to highlight skills that the company clearly values. In fact, "you don't have to have been paid for something for it to be included in your résumé's summary section as a skill. Look at the job ad you're responding to, and figure out what experience you have that speaks to it - even if it's a soft skill like teamwork, you can cite a specific example of your success in that area," says Charles Purdy. Talk yourself up a little - a dose of confidence goes a long way.
10. Don't forget to treat the job search as a learning experience.
Above all, remember that seeking an entry-level job is a huge learning experience, and you should take in as much information as you can. Did you bomb a phone interview? Don't sweat it - now you know what not to do next time. As Kellie Melloy puts it, "don't get complacent. Always get momentum going, and don't forget you should always be gaining knowledge." Everything you experience during your job search will only benefit you in the long run of your career.

What It's Really Like to Get Hair Extensions
In just one afternoon, my hair went from short bob to mermaid long. No, I didn't develop Disney-level magic powers or turn into Beyoncé; I got head-turning extensions.
When RPZL, a new hair extension and blowout bar in New York, offered to let me try a new type of hair extensions, I jumped at the chance. I've had long hair in the past, but I'm currently in the process of growing out a pixie cut, and it is trying my patience.
So I opted for RPZL Next, which uses ultrasonic waves to bond keratin attachments to your actual hair. Like heat-applied keratin extensions, RPZL Next lasts at least three months, but unlike tape extensions, they're attached via individual wefts rather than in strips.
If you, too, are having growing-out woes, or if you just want to add body to already-long locks, you might want keratin-bonded extensions. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of what you can expect from the process.

Kate Middleton Has Something That No Other British Royal Bride Does
We've learned quite a bit about Kate Middleton since she officially joined the royal family in 2011, and getting to see her many milestones as the Duchess of Cambridge has been a real delight. Even though her new life as a duchess has afforded her the same opulent jewels, lavish living quarters, and frequent public appearances as everyone else, there's one thing Kate has that none of the other women in the family do: a college education.
When Kate and William met in 2001, they were both students at University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. They graduated in 2005, William with a master's in geography and Kate with a master's degree (with honors) in art history - making her the UK's first royal bride with a university degree. If Kate becomes queen, she will also be the first ever to have attended college.

Though she didn't attend college, current monarch Queen Elizabeth II's education is nothing to sneeze at. She was essentially homeschooled but had the cream of the crop when it came to teachers. After she became heir to the throne in 1936, she studied constitutional history and law with Eton College Vice Provost Henry Marten. She also learned French, music, and literature from a personal governess and took lessons in religion from the Archbishop of Canterbury. When she was 18, she joined the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II, training as a mechanic and driver.

This Fact About Princess Diana's Wedding Day Will Make Any Bride's Stomach Drop
Princess Diana married Prince Charles in a ceremony only fit for royalty in July 1981, but there are some facts about their big day that would make any bride feel a bit, well, nervous. Aside from having basically the whole world tune in to watch them tie the knot, Diana's walk down the aisle to reach Charles was painfully long. It took the princess, whose father pushed through his health problems to be able to walk with her, a whopping three and a half minutes to walk down the aisle in St Paul's Cathedral in London. Three and a half minutes! That walk can sometimes be the most nerve-wracking thing for a bride, so to have it be the length of an entire song (and in front of 3,000 guests) was surely no easy feat.

This Cooking Liquid You Usually Throw Away Could Be the Secret to Great Hair
When it came to showering, I thought I had everything figured out: rise, lather, repeat. But it turns out, as usual, that there's more to the story, and even the water used in your bathing routine could be due for a rethinking.
The team at Brit + Co brought our to attention a special tradition that originated in Asia. It's the process of using the water left behind from making rice as a soak and rinse for one's locks. After shampooing, the idea is to pour rice water over the hair and let it sit for two to three minutes. Rinse the rice water out, and hair will look stronger and shinier. Some say that fermented rice water is even better than something fresh from the pot.
You can find rice in a bunch of products we love, including L'Occitane's Rice Foaming Cleanser and Tatcha's Gentle Rice Enzyme Powder. Rice has been a go-to ingredient in the beauty industry for a number of years, but this hair-rinse method may be the easiest - and most cost-effective - way to incorporate the grain into your routine.

Long nights, early mornings, and festive Summer evenings out can often lead to dark circles and blotchy skin. So, we asked some of the top makeup artists in the business which concealers they rely on day in and day out, through countless photo shoots and on some of their favorite celebrity clients. Here are the concealers that they continuously go back to. Hopefully it will help you discover your new favorite magic eraser!

How Zumba Helped 1 Woman Dance Off 230 Pounds
Weight-loss success happens when you truly love to live a healthy lifestyle, as Cynthia Ortega found out. Here, she tells Zumba's lifestyle blog, Zlife, about her struggles with weight and how she finally found what works - and lost 230 pounds!
Dietician Says Start Doing This to Lose Weight
You Don't Need a Gym For This 2-Week Workout Plan
Cynthia: Before
Born and raised in Houston, Cynthia Ortega used to look in the mirror and hate what she saw. "I felt horrible and sad," she says. "I used to dread going to restaurants with my husband because I knew I wouldn't fit in the seat." Often smiling on the outside, deep down inside, she wasn't happy. She was trapped in her own body, desperately wanting to be someone else. Even her husband, who was very supportive, felt helpless.
Heavy mostly her whole life, she had never exercised and had many failed attempts with crash diets. One day, while standing in line to order pizza with her husband, a little girl pointed at Cynthia and said to her mom, "Look mom, that's a big lady!" Everyone heard it and Cynthia was mortified. In 2009, she was hospitalized with the swine flu and couldn't even fit through the MRI machine. She went into an induced coma and had to learn to walk and eat again. Due to her weight, she also discovered she had sleep apnea and diabetes.
Cynthia: Before
At a crossroads in her life, it finally clicked for Cynthia that she had to get healthy for herself and her young son who looked up to his mom and needed a positive influence. In 2013, she stumbled across a gym near her home and peeked in to see people taking a Zumba class. "It just looked like a lot of fun and something I could do." She and her friend signed up and, within one month of taking two classes per week, she lost 30 pounds! And that was just the beginning of her transformation.
Cynthia: After
Now 230 pounds lighter, she takes Zumba classes 12 times per week and puts more thought into her diet. She even started a YouTube page to chronicle her weight loss, called "BestFriendFitness" in the hopes of inspiring others out there to get healthy.
At 29 years old and married for eight years, Cynthia is inspiring her husband and family members to be healthy and eat foods in moderation. "Now, when my husband takes me out to a restaurant, I don't have to care about the chairs and if I'll fit in them. I love taking selfies and when I look in the mirror I feel great." She recently went back to the doctor for some tests and stayed four extra days to find out that all her health issues had disappeared and her heart rate was that of a fit person's!
Cynthia: After
So what is Cynthia's advice to others who are suffering from weight issues? "Find what works for you and something you're passionate about. You have to be persistent. You can't expect results from one day to the next. Zumba Fitness is challenging for me. My friends think I make it look easy, but I get out of breath . . . sore . . . tired. It's something that I truly love."

Beyoncé Is Writing the Next James Bond Theme Song, So Goodbye Forever
This week, The Star reported that Beyoncé is set to write the next James Bond theme. According to a source close to the global pop star, "This is the only project she is remotely interested in right now." That's bad news if you're hoping for a Beyoncé album any time soon, but hey, a new Beyoncé song is a new Beyoncé song. The iconic franchise is about to break ground on its 25th film, and Daniel Craig has signed on for his fifth turn as Agent 007. The film is tentatively set for a late 2019 release.
The incredible aspect of this opportunity is it could spell out a potential Oscar for Queen Bey. The James Bond films have a recent record of earning that Oscar gold in the original song category. After all, Sam Smith won the best original song Oscar in 2016 after penning "Writing's on the Wall" for Spectre, and Adele snagged the 2013 award for Skyfall's theme, which shared the same name. Consider also how Bey was contentiously snubbed out of the nomination when the Dreamgirls original "Listen" was up for a win in 2007. It's easy to see how she might view this as an opportunity to grind it, own it, and stay gracious. (Because, in this case, her best revenge is that Oscar.)
Ivanka Trump, a Woman, Supports Ending Key Equal-Pay Initiative
In a move that may disappoint some - but should surprise none - Ivanka Trump came out in support of killing a key Obama-era equal-pay initiative on Aug. 29. The effort would have required businesses to break down their employee records by gender and race/ethnicity alongside their documented rate of pay, and had it gone into effect in September as planned, it could have proved to be an immensely valuable data source for identifying and ultimately eliminating gender- and race-based inequities in the workplace. That is, until it was unceremoniously sacrificed by the bureaucracy for, get this, requiring too much paperwork.
Ivanka's decision to distance herself comes in the wake of a memo released by the Office of Management and Budget, which explained that "some aspects of the revised collection of information lack practical utility, are unnecessarily burdensome, and do not adequately address privacy and confidentiality issues." While perhaps this might have been a valid statement coming from any other administration, we are talking about one that had no qualms about requesting every single piece of voter data from all 50 states for no apparent reason.
With that in mind, it's far more believable that the decision to terminate the effort had more to do with what is initially presented in the memo as a review "in accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act." In other words, the argument is that the fundamental flaw in the initiative was that it generated too much paperwork for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to review. The long and the short of it? It's a clear shot across the bow of gender equality in the workplace, and one that Ivanka Trump has subsequently endorsed.
For her part, Ivanka released a statement that was equally obtuse: "Ultimately, while I believe the intention was good and agree that pay transparency is important, the proposed policy would not yield the intended results." While it's unclear what results she thought the initiative intended to produce, what is clear is that it would've given far more data for officials to work with when it comes to assessing discrimination and inequality in the workplace and given far better insight into the patterns and propagations of such behavior. Ivanka continues to claim that she's an advocate for working women, but this latest move is yet another data point to suggest that, like her father, she isn't too bothered by not being a woman of her word . . . and doesn't care much for defending the rights of women other than herself, either.
30 Photos That Show Queen Letizia Knows the Power of a Good Coat
We all know that Queen Letizia wears outfits not all royals could pull of, but while Spring and Summer are the seasons where we get to see the Spanish queen wearing floral dresses and even short skirts, it's Winter and Fall that we live for, when it's all about Letizia's coats and jackets.
Letizia probably has closets full of jackets, but just like mortals, she has favorites she wears again and again not just in one season, but through the years - you might be familiar with her fuchsia Marco Luengo coat with oversized pockets and her red Hugo Boss one-button jacket. Sometimes Letizia does debut a new piece that matches a dress or belongs to a suit set, but we live for the bright coats she uses to stand out.

This Powerful Sticker Project Reminds You That Help Is Just a Text Away
Bathrooms are some of the most intimate spaces we visit every day, and there isn't really any way to avoid them. That's exactly why Speck and Crisis Text Line have partnered up to get a sticker up in every bathroom across the US that shows how to reach the Crisis Text Line. Dubbed "The Sticker Project," the campaign officially starts on Sept. 1, the first day of National Suicide Prevention Month.
Crisis Text Line (CTL) is a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week free anonymous texting hotline that offers support and help to anyone who is in a "crisis." To reach a crisis counselor, just text 741741 in the US. However, not everyone knows what number to text - or even that such a service exists. Enter The Sticker Project; a free sticker reveals exactly what CTL does and the number at which to reach crisis counselors. Getting the information up in bathrooms across the country makes it even easier for people to know help is always available.
With The Sticker Project, CTL founder Nancy Lublin wants people everywhere to know help is just a text away. "We want everyone to know that there is free, fast, and anonymous help available if they are in crisis," Lublin said in a press release.
Speck, the tech product case company, joined the cause to help people in need. "We want to get the word out about Crisis Text Line so more people know there is fast, free, and anonymous crisis support available to them any time," Speck CEO Irene Baran told POPSUGAR.
To get a set of stickers to put in the bathrooms you frequent most, you can fill out a request form here. Speck will then send 10 stickers and a poster for free. If you're a guidance counselor or work with a much larger community and need more stickers, Speck will work with you to send a bigger batch of stickers. It's incredibly easy to fill out the form and start spreading the word about CTL - and it could help save someone's life.
If you or a loved one are in need of any help, the National Suicide Prevention organization has several resources and a 24/7 lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

6 Secrets Real Estate Agents Know About Kitchen Remodels
So you're finally ready to renovate your dated kitchen, but unsure what upgrades will see a return when it comes time to sell. Katharine Tuckerman, a seasoned real estate agent in Manhattan's Upper East Side with Brown Harris Stevens, says that this room can make or break a deal, because buyers know they will "spend all their time in the kitchen!"
First and foremost, "people really lean towards light and bright kitchens," she says. And although there are so many fun opportunities for customization and colors in a remodel, Katharine confirms the adage that "a neutral palate is always a safe call." Of course, it's not quite that simple! While buyers often anticipate "making minor adjustments," some specific design choices have major selling power, or will just make the space "show much better," as Katharine puts it. From countertops and cabinetry to lighting and appliances, she gives us her winning formula for a kitchen renovation that will rock the MLS!
Yes, I Studied Abroad on a Floating Campus
Four months, 13 countries, hundreds of students, and a seemingly endless piggy bank of stories. That was my study abroad experience. In the spring of 2015, I disembarked from the MV Explorer - a renovated cruise ship turned college campus - after going around the world and back, exploring Hawaii, Japan, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Myanmar (Burma), India, Mauritius, South Africa, Namibia, Morocco, and England. The "Around the World" voyage was as mind-expanding as it was unconventional, and it goes by the name of Semester at Sea.
Change was constant. Adapt, accept, and then do it all over again.
Imagine attending class in the middle of the ocean, waking up in a new country week after week, disconnecting and tuning into what is right in front of you, connecting with the beauty of the experience that you are living, getting to know the people that will become lifelong travel companions and motivators . . . . The ability to unplug will result in an abundance of made-up games, exchanging of photos, music, stories, and conversations that will wander through your thoughts for years to come. You study relevant coursework and apply it to your experiences in port. You pay back debt with yen, dong, and dirhams. You take a meditation class, do yoga with nothing but blue sky and sea as your backdrop, and spend free time poolside with a smoothie in hand and star-filled nights with friends tackling all of the things that set your soul on fire.
The feeling that I had each time the ship pulled into port remains unmatched. There was growing anticipation as each foreign land approached and I was reminded to expect the unexpected. Change was constant. Adapt, accept, and then do it all over again. Time slowed down and days of the week faded into distinguishing between right now or tomorrow. I got lost in Japan, walked along the Great Wall of China, spent sunrise at Angkor Wat, rode through the hills of Myanmar on the back of a motorcycle, met my rickshaw driver's family in India, bungee jumped in South Africa, and made a last-minute decision to skydive in the Namib Desert. A deep sense of accomplishment overtook me each time I returned to my floating home in one piece.
If you know someone who has experienced Semester at Sea, you probably know that we can never seem to keep quiet about it. There's something about being at sea and watching the hues of the ocean change day by day that seeps into your blood. We become undeniably in love with traveling. My days spent crossing oceans led to a relentless curiosity for distant places and cultures, and a newfound understanding that we are all unfathomably similar at our core. The trajectory of my life was altered because I chose to spend 112 days throwing myself gracefully into the unknown.
The 1 Thing That Drastically Improved My Internet Speed
Nothing puts a strain on your internet speed like living in the basement unit of a streaming-happy, smart-device-toting, work-from-home household with a single router. As an occupant of such a household, I've tried the most obvious fixes like relocating the router and purchasing internet extenders without any luck. When I heard about Plume, a new WiFi-enhancing system comprised of sleek metallic pods that essentially replace your router, I felt a flutter of hope.
How It Works:
Plume's secret weapon relies on cloud technology, putting your router in the cloud so that it adapts to your needs in real time. It even gets to know your household's peak times of internet consumption over time to react faster and smarter when you need it most. I've had it for about a month now and the internet connection in our basement unit (a former dead zone) has never been faster or more reliable. Even with a full house of people in the evenings, I can still stream movies while scrolling through my Instagram feed, both of which were nearly impossible to do before, even independently. While Plume has gotten to know our WiFi routines, it can still handle the curve ball of having family and friends visit with their WiFi-hungry devices.
Setting It Up:
My tech knowledge is super basic, so I was pleasantly surprised by how intuitive, fast, and fun it was to set up my Plume WiFi with the Plume app. The entire process took about 15 minutes. I started by plugging my first pod into an outlet and connecting an ethernet cable from the pod to the modem. Then I chose a name and password for my new Plume WiFi network. After plugging in pods in each room, the app instructed me to hold my phone near each of the pods so that it could identify them one by one. Once my app identified them, I named each one by the room it was in. Now I can easily see the status of all of my pods and the devices that are connected to my Plume network.
What It Costs:
A pack of six pods (available in champagne, silver, and onyx) costs $329; a pack of three pods costs $179; and a single add-on pod costs $69.
Why It's Totally Worth It:
While outfitting a large home is definitely an investment, it's a one-time expense that seriously earns its keep every single day. It outsmarts a standard router by managing multiple devices within a home but also pays attention to your neighbor's network. If you and your neighbor have your networks on the same channel, Plume will move your device to a different channel to avoid overload - yet another cloud technology perk. From a design perspective, the inconspicuous pods couldn't be better. I don't have to worry about my 1-year-old son tugging on any antennas or the eyesore of tangled chords. The small shape also allows plenty of room to plug something else into the same outlet instead of hogging the entire thing. The bottom line? If slow and spotty internet is plaguing you, consider Plume your easy fix.
Try One of These Gel Moisturizers to Transform Oily Skin
If you suffer from an oily complexion, you probably don't think you need to add moisture back into your skin. However, this is not the case. Our skin can produce even more oil when not properly hydrated, and daily moisturizer is essential to combat extra sebum.
The key is to use a lighter product, like a gel, in place of heavier creams. Try switching to a gel moisturizer and get your complexion under control. You'll look radiant instead of like an oil slick.
Read on to find our picks for incredible gel moisturizers.

Prince Charles Wanted These Names For William and Harry, but Diana Called Them "Too Old"
Princess Diana and Prince Charles didn't agree on a lot of things during their tumultuous 10-year marriage, and, perhaps quite relatably, baby names was one of them. Like most expectant parents, Charles and Diana had different ideas about what to name their children, but unlike most expectant parents, they were obligated to give their offspring strong, regal names that would sound good with a king or queen title in front of them. The British nobility routinely follow tradition when it comes to picking out names for royal babies, often referencing monarchs of the past - which is why you'll see a number of Georges, Philips, Henrys, Elizabeths, and Victorias in the family tree.
When Diana gave birth to her first son in June 1982, he was given the name William Arthur Philip Louis; two years later, Prince Harry was christened Henry Charles Albert David. In a recorded interview that would go on to be published in the controversial 1992 book Diana: Her Story by Andrew Morton, Diana admitted that she picked the first names for both of her newborn sons after nixing the ones Charles had in mind. When asked, "Who chose [Harry's] name?," Diana said, "I did," adding, "I chose William and Harry, but Charles did the rest." She went on: "He wanted Albert and Arthur, and I said no. Too old!" She may have been on to something, but William could always choose a different regnal name when he becomes king - even Prince Charles, who was christened Charles Philip Arthur George, is expected to be known as King George VII when he takes the throne. William also paid homage to both of his parents with the names of his two children: George Alexander Louis and Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
Diana also revealed the heartbreaking comment that Charles made shortly after Harry's birth: "His first comment was, 'Oh God, it's a boy,'" Diana said. "His second: 'And he's even got red hair.'" Charles was vocal about his desire for a daughter and reportedly told Diana's mother at Harry's christening, "We were so disappointed - we thought it would be a girl." Wonder what names they would have picked out for a little princess?

The 1 Item I Can't Seem to KonMari but Need To
I love everything about Marie Kondo's KonMari Method of tidying up. I have followed every instruction to a T, given away 90 percent of my possessions, and developed better organizational habits than ever before. And yet, there's one thing I can't seem to give up yet: my journals. There's a section in the book - the last section - that deals with this. "Sentimentals" are the most difficult thing to purge, which is why Marie Kondo waits until readers have mastered her method before tackling them. Unlike books, furniture, or clothing, you can't replace things like hand-written cards, printed-out photos, or, in my case, journals that I've kept since I was 6 years old. How can I give them up?
My journals have documented my friendships, my heartbreaks, my journey from Texas to California, my dreams coming true, the hardships I've overcome, and how my voice has matured and changed over the years. They are my life sketched out, and I feel deeply attached to them. I have about six plastic containers full of journals. They are eyeing me, begging to be KonMaried. I've been avoiding them (for over a year now)! There have been times where I've felt compelled to trash them all. I'll pull them down from the top of my closet to start the ceremony, and then, unable to bear the thought of losing those words forever to a trash dump, I'll quickly put them back up again.
Marie Kondo's latest book, The Life-Changing Manga of Tidying Up: A Magical Story, touched on the subject of journals. To paraphrase, she says that most people think journals hold memories, but the truth is, most journals are just a vessel of processing difficult emotions and releasing pent-up frustrations on paper. Memories stay with us in our heads, not journals. Keeping journals with all that negativity can make a person and house feel heavy. She recommends only keeping one journal from the happiest year of your life - that's it - then releasing the rest.
Mulling over this, I have come to realize that possessing my journals hasn't really "sparked joy" or made me feel like I'm living in the present with space for the future. I need to tackle them, too, without so much attachment. I don't know when I'll have time to read through six boxes of journals to find the one that sparks joy, but then again, I have no idea how I managed to KonMari all of my belongings. I guess I'll just take a journal on, a little bit each day. Then I can honestly say I have tackled everything and none of my past is holding me back from enjoying my present.

7 401(k) Mistakes All Millennials Should Avoid
Ah, retirement. More time to travel and spend time with loved ones. Sounds great - assuming you can afford it! While it might be decades away, you need to start planning for it now. But you already knew that, right? Still, once a year when your 401(k) rep stops by the office for a presentation, you may find yourself zoning out as they go on about "target-date funds." Hopefully, despite the dry nature of retirement planning, you've decided to set up a 401(k) anyway. That's a great first step! But now you should understand the common pitfalls and how to avoid them. Here are seven.
Mistake 1: Prioritize It Over All Other Financial Goals
Author and financial expert Nicole Lapin says contrary to what you've heard, maxing out a 401(k) isn't for everyone. She cites a few scenarios where you shouldn't prioritize it, like if you don't have a personal savings account that covers six to nine months of bills and expenses. "You need to have liquid, readily available cash to cover expenses if you lose your job or are in a pinch," Lapin says, suggesting young people contribute to their "rainy day" fund before a 401(k). Another case when you shouldn't rush to max out your 401(k): if you have a lot of debt. "If you have a substantial amount of debt, especially with crummy interest rates, then you're better off chiseling away at it early than investing it in the market."
Mistake 2: Fail to Sign Up For Automatic Escalation
You have the option to automatically increase your contributions to your 401(k) as you make more money - and it would be a mistake not to take advantage of it. "You're less likely to spend that money on something else if it never hits your checking account," Lapin says, "and more likely to put it to good use if the ramp up is on auto-drive." If you can't max out the $18,000 allowed annual contribution today, consider opting into a 2 percent increase each year until you get there.
Mistake 3: Invest in High-Fee Plans
A study from Nerdwallet found that just a 1 percent fee could cost you almost $600,000 by the time your retire. So when you are deciding where to direct the money in your 401(k), it pays to read the fine print. Your 401(k) will likely give you a few investment options to choose from. You want to choose a fund that has the lowest "expense ratio," which is charged as an annual percentage of your total investment in the fund. Typically, passively managed index funds have lower fees than mutual funds. When you leave your company, also consider rolling over your 401(k) into an IRA, which likely has lower management fees.
Mistake 4: Leave Money on the Table
If your company offers 401(k) matching, it's a shame to not take advantage of it. Do your best to understand their program, and even set up a one-on-one meeting with HR if you need help making sense of it. Then, do what you can to meet the matching requirement. If you're company doesn't offer matching, Lapin says you should still inquire about nonmatching contributions. "A match is usually best, but even if your employer doesn't match they might still offer nonmatching contributions based on a percentage of your pay or company profits, especially if your company had a banner year. You won't know until you ask."
Mistake 5: Invest Less Than 10 percent
A typical household needs to save 15 percent of their earnings for retirement, according to a study from The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. And you don't want to put off hitting that target until you're older and have high out-of-pocket expenses like kids in college. Starting young also gives your money more time to compound in the market. In other words, you can reinvest the money you made off your initial investment and now make earnings on your earnings. It's how the rich get richer.
If you don't believe putting a little more money into your account today will have big returns later, check out this example offered by Nick Holeman, a certified financial planner and financial planning expert at online investing service Betterment. "Someone who puts $4,000 per year into retirement accounts starting at 22 years old can have $1 million by age 62, assuming 8 percent average annual returns. Wait 10 years to start contributing and you'd have to put in more than twice as much – $8,800 per year - to reach the same goal."
Mistake 6: Assume You Can Use It Penalty-Free For a Home
Typically, you can withdraw money early from your 401(k) for a down payment if you have not been previous homeowners in the last two years. But there's a catch, according to Lapin: you can only withdraw $10,000 penalty-free. "That means that you'll be paying an additional 10 percent tax on top of your additional income tax." In other words, if you typically pay 30 percent in income taxes, you will pay 40 percent on whatever you take out for a down payment after $10,000.
Mistake 7: Misunderstand the Implications of Taking a Loan
While you shouldn't take out a loan from your 401(k) if you can avoid it, if it does happen remember that you will owe the money back once you leave your company. "That's true whether or not you're leaving voluntarily," Lapin explains. "It's time to pay up and close out. Or else that loan amount will count as income, and you'll be hit with some hefty withdrawal fees."
Now that you know these common mistakes, log on to your 401(k) account and make sure you haven't made any of them!
