Dad's List of 10 Things He's Learned Since Losing His Son Will Bring You to Tears
On Aug. 18, 2016, Richard Pringle's world was turned upside down following the sudden death of his 3-year-old son, Hughie, due to a hemorrhage caused by a rare brain condition the boy had. Now a year later, the dad of three is reflecting on all of the things he's learned since losing Hughie, and his list will bring you to tears, remind you to enjoy the little things, and encourage you to hug your own children tighter than you ever have before.
"You can never ever kiss and love too much," Richard begins the list of his 10 "most important" learnings. "You always have time. Stop what you're doing and play, even if it's just for a minute. Nothing's that important that it can't wait."
The dad continues, reminding fellow parents to take as many photos and videos as possible because "one day that might be all you have," and he encourages moms and dads to spend time, not money, on their kids, as he can't remember a single thing he bought Hughie, just the things they did together. He hits the midpoint on his list asking parents to sing with their little ones because "memories are created in music" and goes on, listing a few more lessons the devastating loss of his toddler has taught him:
Cherish the simplest of things. Night times, bedtimes, reading stories. Dinners together. Lazy Sundays. Cherish the simplest of times. They are what I miss the most. Don't let those special times pass you by unnoticed.
Always kiss those you love goodbye and if you forget. Go back and kiss them. You never know if it's the last time you'll get the chance.
Make boring things fun. Shopping trips, car journeys, walking to the shops. Be silly, tell jokes, laugh, smile, and enjoy yourselves. They're only chores if you treat them like that. Life is too short not to have fun.
Keep a journal. Write down everything your little ones do that lights up your world. The funny things they say, the cute things they do. We only started doing this after we lost Hughie. We wanted to remember everything. Now we do it for Hettie and we will for Hennie too. You'll have these memories written down forever and when your older you can look back and cherish every moment.
If you have your children with you. To kiss goodnight. To have breakfast with. To walk to school. To take to university. To watch get married. You are blessed. Never ever forget that.
The dad closes out his gut-wrenching post with a simple reminder for all parents: "If you have your children with you. To kiss goodnight. To have breakfast with. To walk to school. To take to university. To watch get married. You are blessed. Never ever forget that."

The Completely Addictive Method of Roasting Potatoes
While I love roasting fingerling potatoes with rosemary and bacon (when I'm feeling particularly gluttonous), nothing beats the basic technique done well. While some claim preboiling the potatoes prior to roasting them is the best way to go, I simply can't bring myself to dirty more pans than necessary. So, I present the easiest-ever method of roasting potatoes using only one pan.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Meanwhile, rinse then cut about a pound of fingerling potatoes on the bias (diagonally). Exposing more of the white of the potato will help them brown and crisp up in the oven.
- Transfer the cut potatoes onto a half-sheet pan. Drizzle olive oil across the potatoes, and use your fingers to coat each piece evenly in the oil. Pat your hands dry, then season potatoes with salt and pepper from about a foot's distance. Be sure there is plenty of space between each potato, or else they will steam rather than crisp up in the oven.
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until potatoes are golden and crisp to your liking and are easily pierced with a fork.
- Cool slightly before serving with a spatula.
Try these roasted potatoes with steak, with rotisserie chicken, or even folded into a hacked curry recipe. You can pair them with burgers like makeshift french fries. They taste incredible solo, drenched in meaty juices, or dipped liberally into a mound of ketchup. Roasted potatoes simply make every meal a little bit better.

Think "Instagram Brows" Are Over? Benefit Has a New Product for You
Benefit Cosmetics' impressive, beloved arsenal of products for achieving perfect eyebrows just got even better. Introducing Foolproof Brow Powder ($24), your new go-to for natural-looking fullness. Think: the opposite of superdefined "Instagram brows."
The pan comes with a lighter color and a darker color: lighter is meant for the start of your brows where hair is typically sparser and finer, while darker is reserved for the tail end, where hairs tend to be more dense. To make things as easy as possible, the two colors are laid out in the shape of an eyebrow so you know exactly where to apply each. As for the formula itself, Benefit claims it doesn't smudge and lasts for 12 hours.
Foolproof also comes in a convenient compact with its own mirror and mini applicator. Instead of the usual angled brush, the double-ended wand has a spoolie and sponge. Benefit's Global Brow Artist Jared Bailey told us the sponge is like a "BeautyBlender for your eyebrows" because it allows you to blend powder with a soft shading instead of sharp lines. This way, you end up with thickness that convincingly looks like you just grew a few more hairs.
You can get Foolproof Brow Powder online now and in stores on Sept. 1. Get a closer look, below.
The Inspiration Behind Taylor Swift's "Ready For It" Is Probably Not Who You Think
Just when we thought we were down pouring over the hidden references in Taylor Swift's music video for "Look What You Made Me," she gave us something else to obsess over: a new song. Early Sunday morning, the singer dropped "...Ready For It?" and we haven't been the same since. Not only does the track feature Swift rapping (yes, really), but it also alludes to a secretive romance. So, who exactly is the mystery man she's singing about? While many believe her new British beau, Joe Alwyn, is the inspiration behind the song, the lyrics actually seem to point to her ex, Harry Styles. Don't believe us? Take a look at the evidence below.
- "Knew he was a killer first time that I saw him. Wonder how many girls he had loved and left haunted. But if he's a ghost then I can be a phantom." - Styles was known for being a heartbreaker when Swift first started dating him, hence "I Knew You Were Trouble" from her Red album. But what seems to be the most telling part about this lyric is her mention of him being a ghost. Styles's second single on his debut studio album was titled "Two Ghosts" and was rumored to be about their relationship. We all know Swift loves to have the last word, so maybe that's why she's bringing up their relationship again on this album.
- "Younger than my exes, but he act like such a man." - One of the most talked about aspects of Swift and Styles's relationship was how much younger he was than her - he was 18 and she was 22 at the time. While Alwyn, 26, is also younger than her exes Tom Hiddleston and Calvin Harris, who are 36 and 33 respectively, Styles is still one of the youngest men she has dated.
- "Island breeze and lights down low. No one has to know. In the middle of the night, in my dreams. You should see the things we do, baby." - If you thought these lyrics sounded familiar, it's because they pretty much mimic "Wildest Dreams" from 1989, which is yet another song rumored to be about Styles. Her lyric about him being the "Burton to this Taylor" also seems to allude to the music video for "Wildest Dreams" in which Swift dons an Elizabeth Taylor-esque brown wig. If there's anything we have learned from the singer over the years, it's that nothing is coincidental.
- "He can join the heist and we'll move to an island and he can be my jailer." Notice how Swift brings up an island twice in the song? So did we. In January 2013, the two took a romantic vacation to the British Virgin Islands. However, it didn't end well as Swift was later spotted leaving the island alone after their breakup.

7 Movies to Feed Your Obsession With Cults
People have always been fascinated by cults, but even a cursory look at the current pop culture zeitgest reveals that America most definitely has a renewed, maybe stronger-than-ever interest in unhealthy, manipulative religious groups. On TV, we've come to love a mole woman also known as Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Hulu's drama The Path takes us inside a fictional cult, and American Horror Story's latest season is taking on the cult theme. On the movie front, the indie sleeper hit The Invitation captures a particularly LA, self-help-y strain of religious fervor, and a rash of magazine and online pieces about alleged cult-like behavior in groups like NYC's SuperStar Machine and Jivamukti yoga continue to bubble up in our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
My less-than-half-baked theory? This current wave of fascination may have more than a little to do with the election cycle. That said, I'm no psychologist - so instead of analyzing the "why" behind our shared obsession, I dug up a handful of great documentaries and films about cults to feed it.

Are you ready to get paranoid? Mr. Robot's season three trailer has arrived, and it'll have your stomach in knots for every second of its minute-and-a-half run time. Between shots of Elliot (Rami Malek) and his hoodie looking more frantic than ever (which is saying something), ominous quips about the Dark Army going rogue and Evilcorp's war on society, and intriguing appearances from Christian Slater and Joey Bada$$ (OK), the third installment is going to be out of control. Check it out above before Mr. Robot returns to USA on Oct. 11.

We Didn't Need This "LWYMMD" and "Toxic" Mashup, but We're Loving It Anyway
Remember when Britney Spears said she'd never met Taylor Swift even though there was photo evidence of her meeting Taylor? That was funny. Anyway, this mashup of Britney's 2004 hit "Toxic" with Taylor's new headline-making single "Look What You Made Me Do" was definitely not something we asked for, but it actually sounds pretty sick. What Does "Cisgender" Mean?
Whether it's thanks to Jazz Jennings, Caitlyn Jenner, or your own personal experience, the term "transgender" is undoubtedly on your radar. The definition is simple enough: an adjective "denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex." And while transgender people have - of course - existed throughout history, the label "transgender" itself didn't pop up until the 1970s. In an attempt to clarify its meaning and its importance, experts coined another term about two decades later: cisgender.
"'Cisgender' means that the gender someone was assigned at birth ('male' or 'female') is the same as their actual gender," says Dr. Rachel McKinnon, assistant professor of philosophy and affiliate faculty in women's and gender studies at College of Charleston. "Conversely, 'transgender' means that the gender someone was assigned at birth is different from their actual gender." So a person who identifies as a man and also has "male" printed on his birth certificate may be described as cisgender, and the same goes for a person who was born female and identifies as a woman. But while some people think of transgender and cisgender as direct opposites, McKinnon is quick to point out an important distinction: "[They're] not necessarily 'opposite' since there are nonbinary genders," she says, referencing gender fluid persons.
The roots of cisgender
While experts generally agree that "cisgender" first came into use in the 1990s, there's a bit of debate over who originally coined the term. According to Julia Serano's book Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity, the term was first coined by a transsexual man named Carl Buijs in 1995. But others trace the word back to a year earlier when a biologist named Dana Leland Defosse used it in a university newsgroup.
"Like 'trans,' 'cis' has a Latin root," explains K.J. Rawson, an assistant professor in the English department at the College of the Holy Cross. "'Trans' means 'across, beyond, or on the other side of,' whereas 'cis' denotes 'on this side of.'"
McKinnon takes that explanation one step further, providing some additional context rooted in scientific subject matter. "Many trace the origin of the terms from the use of 'cis' and 'trans' in chemistry to name isomers of molecules," McKinnon says. "Particularly, when a molecule has a carbon-carbon double bond, and we want to know whether two parts of a molecule are 'on the same side as' (cis) or 'on the opposite side of' (trans) the double bond."
Use of the term
Serano had never heard of "cis" terminology when she started writing Whipping Girl in 2005, but after stumbling across a piece by feminist writer Emi Koyama, she realized a word existed that spoke to a common myth she'd been trying to debunk: that being transgender was somehow "less natural" or "less legitimate" than being nontransgender. Koyama's explanation of cis terms made sense to her, since she argued that labeling nontrans people was a way to "decentralize the dominant group, exposing it as merely one possible alternative rather than the 'norm' against which trans people are defined."
"Most uses of the term, as far as I can tell, are neutral in tone," Rawson says. "'Cisgender' is meant to describe experiences that contrast with 'transgender.' Of course, there has been a great deal of controversy surrounding the term, and many have strongly objected to it."
As writer Paula Blank points out in her Atlantic article, "Will 'Cisgender' Survive?", many have credited the term for implying commonality between transgender and nontransgender people and for serving as a reminder that people who experience a "match" between their body and their identity are more likely to have an easier time navigating the world. But opponents of the term have taken issue with the notion that cisgender women have more privilege than transgender women who were born male (and had the opportunity to experience all the privilege of being male in a patriarchal society). Others believe the term is inherently derogatory.
"'Unfortunately, some people continue to react negatively to being called 'cis' since they want to be referred to as 'normal,'" McKinnon says. "Some have gone so far as to call 'cis' a slur. But that is absurd. This is like someone saying, 'I'm not a white woman! I'm just a woman! "White" is a slur!'"
Despite the criticisms, "cisgender" appears to be a word with staying power. Besides its addition to the Oxford Dictionaries, "cisgender," along with "cis male," "cis female," "cis," and more, is one of many gender identification options on Facebook. "The term has definitely increased in usage over the past two decades," Rawson says. "It may not be a perfect term, and some backlash to derogatory uses of the term may be justified, but its rapidly increasing use suggests that people do need a way to describe the experience of having your birth-assigned gender align with your continuing gender identity."
Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington Both Star in D&G's New Fragrance Campaign, and Oh My God
As we approach the first weekend without a new episode of Game of Thrones, Dolce & Gabbana has just the remedy to quell our appetite for more. Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington, whose characters Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow sealed their romance in one of the most talked-about scenes of the season seven finale, unite once again in a campaign for The One fragrances. It's almost too much to handle.
Emilia, face of The One Eau de Toilette, and Kit, face of The One for Men ($67), both have commercials where they party in the streets alongside locals in Naples, Italy. Captured by filmmaker Matteo Garrone, they both look stunning dressed to the nines. There's dancing. There's spaghetti. It's festive, playful, and gives even more reason to want to hang out with these two IRL close friends. While the charismatic duo don't share screen time together in this campaign (sob), our fingers are crossed that Dolce & Gabbana has more in store.
While The One for Men has been a D&G classic since 2008, the Eau de Toilette is a brand new offering for Sept. 2017. Expect a sensual scent made up of top notes madonna lily, bergamot, and white peach with other notes of orange blossom and vanilla.
Ahead, see both of their campaign photos, videos, and behind-the-scenes goodness.

I Tried Kylie Jenner's Trendy Mattress, and Here's What Happened
As a millennial, I order more meals from Seamless than I care to admit, almost exclusively shop online, and have a deep appreciation for convenience and immediate gratification. So when I transplanted from California to New York and set out to buy a mattress as my first purchase, I didn't realize how overwhelming the mattress-shopping process would be until I spent a weekend navigating big-box stores. The sheer volume of mattress types and seemingly arbitrary markups were headache inducing - and let's not forget about the intimidating task of transporting the mattress from the store to my apartment. Acquiring a mattress was shaping up to be an impossible task.
Then I discovered Casper, a millennial-friendly mattress start-up that delivers mattresses in boxes at astonishingly low prices. Since launching in April 2014, the company has generated a lot of buzz, popping up in the Instagram feeds of celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Kat Graham, Emmy Rossum, and Ashley Greene. When the youngest Kardashian-Jenner sister moved into her $2.7 million mansion, the first thing she unpacked was - you guessed it - her Casper mattress.
So why the hype? The "bed-in-a-box" company eliminates the difficulties associated with traditional mattress shopping, thanks to its online-only retailing, hassle-free shipping system, and free trial period. To further simplify things, Casper only offers one kind of mattress, which is available in the standard six sizes, with prices ranging from $500 for a twin to $950 for a California king. The celebrity fandom could also be linked to its celebrity funding. After earning $1 million in revenue in its first month, investors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Adam Levine, and Ashton Kutcher's A-Grade Investments decided to hop in bed with the company. The next question is obvious . . . does the product actually stand up to all of the hype? I decided to find out for myself.
Kate Middleton and Sister Pippa Have Reportedly Made a Royal Pregnancy Pact
Could there be more than one royal baby on the way? Us Weekly is reporting that Kate Middleton and her younger sister, Pippa, want to be pregnant together. "It's long been a dream for Kate and Pippa to be pregnant at the same time," a Middleton family friend told the magazine, adding, "To share that would be amazing." The source also reveals that Kate has wanted a third child "almost since giving birth" to Princess Charlotte in 2015, and that she and Prince William "promised each other they wouldn't even think about having another child until they were mentally ready and it felt right." Apparently, now is the time. "They would love to be pregnant soon," the source added.
Meanwhile, Pippa and her husband, James Matthews, are reportedly trying for a baby as well. The two tied the knot in a stunning UK ceremony back in May, but have been talking about starting a family even before the wedding. A "Pippa insider" told Us that the 33-year-old will "make a fantastic mother" and has had lots of practice taking care of her niece and nephew, Princess Charlotte and Prince George. "She's a brilliant auntie - they always look forward to playing with Pips," said the insider. So, all we have to do now is wait . . . for two new little royals!
The Night King Is Terrifying, but He Can Probably Be Killed One of These Ways
A huge threat is suddenly pouring into Westeros now that the Night King, his army of White Walkers and the undead, and his ice dragon Viserion have brought the Wall down on the Game of Thrones season seven finale. We've all seen how it's (relatively) easy to kill White Walkers and wights, but what about the Night King? And what about his undead flying steed, Viserion?
White Walkers and wights are killed by only a couple things: Dragonglass and Valyrian steel. Both of those materials will kill either White Walkers or wights. Fire also appears to kill wights. They are extremely flammable and go up like kindling at the slightest bit of flame.
White Walkers, however, do not appear to be susceptible to fire. In the season six episode "Hardhome," they are shown to snuff out fire due to their extremely cold bodies. But that was just regular fire - it is unknown if they can be killed by dragon's fire or wildfire.
Finally, we learned in season seven, episode six that if a White Walker is struck down, all the wights that particular walker created will also fall, so a popular theory about defeating the army of the dead is to get the Night King, because then presumably everything else dies with him. But that may be harder than it seems.
We don't yet know exactly what weaknesses the Night King has. He has to have at least one, or else what is the point of watching the show anymore? But fans have wondered if since the Night King was stabbed with dragonglass all those centuries ago and that is what turned him from human into creature we now see, maybe he can't be killed by dragonglass.
That would leave Valyrian steel, which makes sense. Valyrian steel swords are even harder to come by in Westeros than dragonglass, so it would make sense that one of the few of those left floating around would be needed to defeat him.
And perhaps take it one step further - maybe it isn't any old Valyrian steel sword, maybe the only thing that can defeat the Night King is Lightbringer, the flaming Valyrian steel sword of Azor Ahai, aka the Prince That Was Promised, aka possibly Jon Snow (who is now Aegon Targaryen).
It would certainly be fitting if the only person who can kill the Night King is Jon Snow and his prophetical flaming sword.
As for Viserion, while he is an animal wight like any other animal wight, he's also still a dragon, so simply stabbing him with a dragonglass dagger probably won't get the job done. How would it even penetrate his thick hide?
We predict something like Qyburn's scorpion will come back into play in season eight, this time armed with a bolt of dragonglass. That, or one of Daenerys's other dragons is going to have to bring his brother down with fire, which sounds pretty epic. We just hope we don't lose Rhaegal or Drogon in the process.
Evan Peters Is Playing 3 Notorious Cult Leaders on AHS, and We Are Terrified
Since the season seven premiere of American Horror Story is just days away, your nightmares have probably been consumed with images from the new theme: Cult. The official trailer confirms the season deals with the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, with Sarah Paulson's character, Ally Mayfair, spiraling out of control and Evan Peters's character, Kai Anderson, rising in triumph (the Trump similarity to that word isn't lost on me). In addition to Kai being a cult leader on his own, Peters will also reportedly take on the roles of three other notorious cult leaders in history - Charles Manson, David Koresh, and Jim Jones - as well as one iconic figure who had a large following, Andy Warhol.
The show's creator and executive producer, Ryan Murphy, confirmed that Peters will play these other characters in flashbacks, but we won't see them until at least the fourth episode. Keep reading to dive a little deeper into their terrifying true stories before AHS returns on Tuesday.
The 6 Most Important Issues in the World, According to Millennials
We all know that millennials have a lot of feelings. It's that abundance of feelings that countless brands, marketers, and entrepreneurs have seized upon, crafting their products to the needs of the 20-something, shifting their messaging to be more in line with the ideals that millennials embrace. But while it's easy to identify and target a specific demographic, success among a particular generation is far less frequent. It can be incredibly difficult to separate what a group cares most about from what it is they want others to believe is their raison d'être - and those two sentiments are not always in line with one another.
As the first age group to enter maturity with access to the internet and social media, millennials have a unique brand of public persona that can sometimes be completely independent from an individual's true feelings. As a result, it's hard to predict what apps will be popular with millennials a week from now - let alone what global issues they find to be of most concern. That is, until the Global Shapers Survey came along.
Now in its third year, the World Economic Fund's annual poll measures the pulse of millennials on issues ranging from economic inequality to climate change and everything in between. The nearly 25,000 participants in the 2017 survey came from 186 different countries, and those involved were asked questions pertaining not only their city or town, but also about the world they live in.
Ahead, we've highlighted the top six issues that matter the most to millennials, according to this year's study. For a more in-depth look at what these findings mean, check out the full report or head over to the Global Shapers site for more information.

13 Things Young Moms Are Tired of Hearing
While some women choose to wait a while before having kids, there are plenty who opt to start a family a bit earlier. Right now, most of those young women are millennials, and they're basking in the benefits of being a younger mom - more energy, less need for sleep, and a body that bounces back a bit quicker - but they're over it when it comes to getting asked the same questions, being told the same things, and honestly, being shamed for starting a family young.
These are 13 of those things that young moms are super tired of hearing - and if you're one of those moms, just practice your best fake smile/eye roll/polite laugh to get through it. Read on to see how it's done.

Double For Your Money: Clothes You Can Wear to Both the Gym and the Office
Wearing workout clothes to work sounds like a dream. Being at your desk for eight hours straight is a lot less painful when you're lounging around in a pair of stretchy leggings and sneakers. I know this firsthand because I wore workout clothes to work for a whole week, and it was everything I imagined it to be: I worked out more often, experienced less chronic pain, and increased my daily step count. Everyone should give it a shot, because there's a lot to be gained.
But not all athleisure is work-appropriate. You probably wouldn't wear your rainbow-striped yoga pants to the office or the raggedy (perhaps pit-stained) t-shirt you put on when you're about to lift weights. It's all about finding the right pieces that are multifunctional, chic, and comfortable and that easily match with the rest of your wardrobe.
I've rounded up some of my favorites here. Keep in mind that when you have outfits that work for both the gym and the office, you're getting double for your money. Now that's something everyone can get on board with.

Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe may play love interests as Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall on Outlander, but sadly, they're only friends in real life. Still, Sam and Caitriona often exchange sweet looks at red carpet events, and Sam frequently shares photos of the pair hanging out on Instagram. Back in October 2016, Sam gushed to Vanity Fair about what it was like working with Caitriona on the show, saying, "It's always hard when we're apart, actually, because she's a great person, great to come to work with, and a very good actress." Take a look at their most loving moments before Outlander returns on Sept. 10.

Sophie Turner Reveals Why Her Friendship With Maisie Williams Is So Special
Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner play the Stark sisters on Game of Thrones, but they also act like siblings in real life. The ladies first met while auditioning for the hit HBO show and instantly formed a bond. In addition to their adorable red carpet outings and matching tattoos, Maisie and Sophie say the sweetest things about each other. Trust us, you'll have a hard time not obsessing over them.
Maisie on Sophie
- On the first time she met Sophie: "I had gotten along really, really well with Sophie and I just remember her being super tall. I came out of the audition and said to my mum, 'Even if I don't get the part, I really want that girl to. She's really cool.'"
- On their unique bond: "It's nice to have her going through this industry and someone who just completely gets it. It's really lovely to have someone hold my hand through all of it."
- On what it's like working with Sophie on Game of Thrones: "It's funny because she's so not like Sansa in real life. She's a great lass, and we both like the same things. And then on screen, we have our little arguments and things, so you get to see a different side of each other. In real life, I've never seen the side of Sophie where she says, 'Oh, you're an idiot.' But I didn't find it difficult to hate Sophie on screen - I mean, I love her to pieces - but I didn't find it a challenge, really, as an actress."
Sophie on Maisie
- On their matching tattoos: "She's one of my best friends in the whole world. We got matching tattoos. That's the date that we both heard we got Game of Thrones on."
- On why their bond is so special: "Our other friends don't 100 percent get it. Sometimes it's nice to just be with the one person who does."
- On their close friendship: "Maisie and I have the purest form of true, true friendship. She's been my rock. We are kind of the only two people who know what it feels like to go through this very scenario from pretty much the same background and ending up where we are and kind of finding ourselves as we go."
- On what it was like shooting their first Game of Thrones scene together: "We couldn't keep a straight face! Our relationship is so close, but it's only that fun side, never the business side. I was nervous. It just terrified me. It's like performing for your mom. When somebody is watching, you don't do it quite as well. But in the long run I think it benefits us because we can be free with each other in our acting. We're not afraid to go there with each other because we feel so comfortable around each other."
- On why she and Maisie click: "I've always seen Maisie as this rebellious, cool kid, while I'm more passive-aggressive, or else just passive. I hate that about myself, and I love that Maisie is just who she is. We spent the past five years basically sharing a hotel room (even though we each had our own), having endless sleepovers, lots of line rehearsals, and lots of food and messing about, too."
Janis Joplin's Drug-Related Death Isn't as Cut-and-Dry as You Think
Janis Joplin was one of the most gifted and talented singer-songwriters of the 1960s. With a powerhouse voice and understated, no-frills look, Janis commanded every crowd she was in front of, from her early days as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company to her breakthrough solo career; hits like "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)," "Maybe," and "Piece of My Heart" skyrocketed her to fame and landed her a spot in the lineup at Woodstock in August 1969 - but just a year later, Janis's intense flame would burn out.
Janis was a habitual drug user and heavy drinker throughout her career; it was widely known that she took methamphetamine and occasionally used heroin along with other psychoactive drugs. While she did have bouts of sobriety, her addiction ultimately ended her life. After Janis failed to show up for a recording session in LA on Oct. 4, 1970, her road manager, John Cooke, drove to the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood, where she was staying, and saw her distinctively painted Porsche in the parking lot. He entered Janis's room and found her lying dead on the floor next to the bed. Her official cause of death was a heroin overdose, "possibly compounded by alcohol" (Janis's drink of choice was Southern Comfort). Though Janis was heavily into heroin at that point, those close to her believed that she was given a dose that was more potent than normal that accidentally killed her, especially since several of her dealer's other customers overdosed that same week.
Her death hit the music community hard; rock legend Jimi Hendrix had died just 16 days earlier, and they both happened to be 27 years old when they passed. The last song Janis ever recorded was "Mercedes Benz," which would go on to be included on her posthumous album Pearl in 1971. It became the biggest-selling album of her career and also featured her biggest hit single, "Me and Bobby McGee."
4 Guys You Probably Didn't Know Dated Emilia Clarke
Game of Thrones fans understandably lost their sh*t when Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) finally met this season. While Emilia and Kit are only friends in real life (Kit is currently dating his former GOT love interest, Rose Leslie), we can't help but wonder about Emilia's love life. The 30-year-old London native has previously admitted that her past movie roles and hectic schedule have made it difficult for her to date, but she certainly hasn't lost hope. "I'm soppy, and I do like to believe that when the right person comes along, it will work, because you want to make it work," she told UK's The Sun in May 2016. "Everyone else seems to manage it." Take a look back at all the men she's dated.

This Nude Lip Gloss Was Made For Women of Color - and It's Finally Available!
When you hear the term "lip gloss," what comes to mind? Chances are it's the image of a shiny, bubblegum-pink product that always manages to trap your hair in a cobweb-like mess (or Lil Mama's epic 2007 jam dedicated solely to her "poppin'" lip gloss). The notoriously sticky lip product may not be part of your daily makeup routine, but Mented Cosmetics is about to change that.
Mented (short for pigmented) is a rapidly growing brand that makes beauty products specifically crafted with the needs of deep-skinned women in mind. Founded by two women of color, Harvard Business School grads KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson, Mented has already released a gorgeous collection of nude lipsticks and nail polishes, but its latest foray into the makeup world features a handful of neutral-toned lip glosses we can't wait to test out ASAP.
The Gloss For Grown-Ups collection includes four warm, Fall-approved shades - Mauve Over, Send Nudes, Berry Me, and Baby Brown - each of which is ideal for professional women looking for a shiny yet work-appropriate lip gloss to sport in the office every day.
In a press release about the collection, cofounder Johnson explained how it will fill a void in the makeup scene for WOC. "I was a hardcore lip gloss fan, but could never really find the right shade or formula," she said. "Everything was either too sticky, too shiny, too frosty, or too sheer and didn't compliment my skin tone. I'm proud that we continue to expand the beauty options for women of color everywhere. Now, we too can be gloss girls with the shades and formulas we deserve."
The nude glosses are now available on MentedCosmetics.com for $15 each or $50 for the whole collection. Read on to see (and shop!) both the lip glosses and what they look like after application.
8 Ways to Eat Clean This Fall So You Can Go Ham During the Holidays
When the holidays arrive, the last thing you want to think about is dieting and eating clean, right? While it's nice to find healthier and lighter options to your favorite holiday treats, this season is a brief part of a long year, and it's nice to just take part in the once-a-year indulgences.
If you're still stressed about the effect it might have on your health (and weight-loss progress), we have some tips on how you can head into said season of decadence with a little less worry. Here are a few ways to clean up your diet NOW so you can feel free as a bird when you're sipping eggnog and scooping mashed potatoes.
- Get Your Digestion in Check. Certain Fall foods can actually debloat and aid in digestion. Get your body feeling regular with turmeric, celery, and even miso soup. You can also try to add in probiotics and eat fermented foods to give your gut health a boost.
- Eat in Season. Take advantage of the health benefits of Fall produce and flavors with healthy Fall recipes that will give you an energy boost while keeping your diet nice and clean.
- Sip All the Tea. Heat up tea when the weather gets chilly. It'll benefit your health in so many ways, in addition to offering a cozy comfort. From losing weight to clearing your skin to helping you debloat, there's not much tea can't do. Not a big tea person? Try fun flavors like pumpkin chai or strawberry rhubarb parfait (two of our favorites!).
- Use That Slow Cooker. Save time with your clean-eating endeavors and celebrate the season by making healthy slow-cooker recipes. Because eating clean doesn't always mean eating salad.
- Drink More Water. Give yourself reminders to drink more water. It'll not only keep you feeling fresh and energized, but it can also mitigate unnecessary eating (sometimes we confuse dehydration for hunger and eat when we really should just sip some more H2O).
- Avoid Hidden Sugars. We're guessing that if you're going to eat sugar, you'd rather have sugar in a delicious pastry or dessert than hidden sugar in dressing or spaghetti sauce, right? Read your labels and choose wisely so you can feel better about your sugary holiday indulgences.
- Greens, greens, greens. Now is the time to add in more vegetables and get the nutrients you need so you can head into Thanksgiving and beyond with your nutrition on point. Add vegetables to your breakfast, experiment with new kinds you haven't tried, and decorate your plate with an assortment of colors to reap all the health benefits. You'll thank yourself later in the season when you're on your third helping of your aunt's prize-winning mac and cheese.
- Get Moving. OK, so this one is less of an eating tip, but a postmeal brisk walk can be one of the best ways to burn calories and will help your body digest, too!
7 Healthy Hot Drinks to Sip on a Cold Day
Wintertime calls for comforting, soothing hot drinks like cocoa and tea - but they don't have to be unhealthy! With these recipes, you can sip on your favorites all season long, without any worry about your diet.
Why Watching Bad TV Can Actually Be Considered Self-Care
I'll be the first to admit my DVR is not full of the most high-quality television out there. While I religiously watch Game of Thrones (it's hard to work at POPSUGAR if you don't) and always eventually get to the critically acclaimed stuff (I was only six months late to Big Little Lies and I'm sure I'll love Breaking Bad when I see it), my DVR is stocked full of stuff that most people have never heard of or abandoned a long time ago.
I joke a lot about my TV habits, but I recently realized that every show I watch really does serve a purpose. Each show, in its own way, helps me unwind and forget for a little while that the world is a crazy place. There are so many ways to practice self-care, and in recent years, it's become more of a trend. I'd like to offer one new way to take care of yourself: zoning the f*ck out for 30 minutes to an hour.
My life is not hard. I go to work every day for a company that I'm proud of and I have a family that I love. That said, when it's 9 p.m. and I'm exhausted with a messy house, a growing to-do list on my mind, and a Twitter feed that is pissing me off, my TV is the fastest and easiest way to escape from it all. And my guilty-pleasure shows check every box I need.
