The Meaning Behind Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls
Día de los Muertos is a colorful celebration to honor death and those who have passed, but when people ask me to explain the history behind this date, what exactly it entails, and why we remember the dead for a day or two (Nov. 1 and 2) or even an entire week, it gets tricky. There isn't one definition or way of observing Day of the Dead; it all depends on where you're from (what state in Mexico or even country), but I can say that some symbols and traditions run through all festivities.
Take, for example, skulls and skeletons. If there is one thing everyone probably knows about Día de los Muertos, it is that these two symbols are a big part of the day, specifically sugar skulls or "calaveritas de azúcar." If you've ever attended a Día de los Muertos event or seen an ofrenda (or altar), then you might have come across a white molded skull with a person's name written on its forehead and a series of sweets and ribbons decorating the rest. And while now you might be picturing yourself eating a delicious treat, these are not sweets you'd eat in Mexico.
There's meaning behind these molds and why they're made out of sugar. It all dates back to the Spanish conquest. While a tradition of honoring the dead already existed in Mexico at the time, the Spaniards brought about new learnings and customs and with that the idea of molding decorations from ingredients easily available. Sugar was accessible to Mexicans at the time, even those with little money, so it was a natural choice. Once they learned that they could make these skull molds with the ingredient and water (that's all it really is), the idea of the sugar skull evolved and grew to be an important symbol of the day.
Today, many different versions of the sugar skull exist. There are not only different sizes, but also coffins and skulls made out of chocolate and almonds (those you can eat!). But the meaning behind the calaverita remains the same.
Going back to the altar, skulls are placed as decorations to recognize the person who has passed. His or her name is written on the sugar skull's forehead and, depending on the age of the deceased, the size of the skull might vary - baby skulls are dedicated to those who passed at a young age and larger skulls are for adults. The colors of the skulls differ, too. Some are covered in ribbons and icing, others are dipped in glitter and decorated with bright adornments like hats and bows. While you'll find a variety of versions, you won't find any that lack color, because color reflects life, and the Day of the Dead celebrates just that.
The symbol is a commemoration of the person you are honoring whether dead or alive. That's why you don't have to wait for someone to pass to offer them a sugar skull; you can give one as a gift on Day of the Dead as a sweet reminder that death is the only thing guaranteed in this life or in the words of my mother "la calavera es un símbolo de la muerte, lo único seguro en la vida."

If You Have a Boy, Please Spend 30 Seconds Reading This Mom's Message
Jaime Primak Sullivan might call herself "the meanest mom ever," but this New Jersey parent is teaching her boys not to hide their emotions.
This mother-of-three isn't afraid to show her sons affection, especially when they are in pain, and after a stranger at a baseball game criticized her for comforting her 8-year-old son Max when he got hit in the face with a ball, Jamie decided to speak out. "I saw it happen like it was slow motion. I saw his eyes widen and then squint from the pain - he looked around trying to focus. I knew he was looking for me," Jamie wrote on Facebook. "My feet couldn't move fast enough. As soon as we connected, I got down on one knee."
Jamie wrapped her arms around Max and he sobbed into her shoulder at the pain. A stranger quickly interrupted this moment between mother and son when he approached and said, "You need to stop babying that kid."
Instead of getting upset, Jamie kept her attention on her child, cleaned his face, and sent him back to join his team once she knew that he was OK. However, as she climbed back up the bleachers, her hands started shaking with rage.
"This notion that boys can never hurt, that they can never feel, is so damaging to them long term. The belief that any signs or gestures of affection will somehow decrease their manhood - this pressure to always 'man up' follows them into adulthood where they struggle to fully experience the broad scope of love and affection. The only emotion they healthily learn to express is happiness and then we wonder why they are always chasing it.They're taught that sadness is weakness, that talking about their fears or short comings makes them less than. They don't mourn properly. The struggle to grieve. They're afraid to cry. It all spills into the way they husband and father and I hate it.
Love is a verb. It is something you do. It is not the same as babying, coddling or spoiling. It is something my son deserves. I will always love him when he is hurting and my prayer for him is that he is always open to receiving love so he can love in return and keep that cycle going."

In honor of Beyoncé's everlasting greatness, a group of dancers representing all colors, body types, and gender identities shows off her signature moves alphabetically, starting with the "all the single ladies" shimmy and "Baby Boy" bounce right on up to "Yoncé swag" - and we especially love that "H" stands for "hairography."

This Bathroom Renovation Tip Will Save You Time and Money
I'm a home editor with an embarrassing secret. Since moving into our place, I've neglected our master bathroom so entirely that even the dated design features make sloppy details we're actually responsible for (ahem: crooked Ikea shelving, patches of spackle on the wall, and broken towel hooks) seem bougie in comparison. My husband and I designated it as the "I give up room" - a place kept off limits to guests that serves only the most basic functional needs, sort of like the "I give up sweats." You know they're unflattering but you still won't get rid of them.
We knew something had to be done, but the reality was that if we were too "busy" to replace a broken wall hook, then making all of the design decisions for a bathroom renovation, and hiring a contractor to execute everything was going to be a stretch. When I was approached by Decorist, an online interior design service that recently launched a renovation partnership with Lowe's, I knew this was our chance.

The Secret Vacation Behaviors You KNOW You're Guilty Of
Staying at hotels is one of my favorite things to do. I love fresh sheets, soft robes, free toiletries, and, obviously most of all, room service. Still, there's a few things we all do behind closed doors when we're traveling that we may prefer to keep to ourselves. Hilton Hotels and Resorts did a travel survey that sampled over 1,000 US adults 18 and over who have taken a personal/leisure vacation and stayed overnight at a hotel in the past 12 months, and the results were very interesting.
One of the survey questions delved into some secret vacation behaviors of travelers, particularly those we're embarrassed to admit. Here are the top five things travelers are doing on the sly - and let's be honest, we're guilty of a few of these, too - even number one!
20 Things That Happen When You Stay at a Sandals Resort
Whether you're 9 years old or 90 years old, you've probably seen an ad for Sandals Resorts. (Think iconic cursive logo set against a beachy backdrop.) While it may seem like a massive operation, the all-inclusive chain remains intimate and family-owned, just like when it was founded in 1981.
Today, the company boasts five brands and 24 properties throughout the Caribbean, including places like the Bahamas, Jamaica, and most recently, Grenada. Sandals invited me to visit their newest resort - formally called Sandals LaSource Grenada - in late April to find out what the property is actually like beyond the commercials. The place is as beautiful as you can imagine, and the clientele ranged from couple friends in their late 20s and 30s to elderly pairs celebrating their decades-long anniversaries.
Although Sandals often offers sales, prices aren't exactly cheap - you'll most likely drop more than $1,000 per night. If you're thinking of staying at a Sandals resort anytime soon, here's what you can expect.
Kate Spade's Deborah Lloyd Has the Perfect Career Advice For Her 22-Year-Old Self

The Pool Danger Most Parents Have Never Heard of - Until Now
Many children dream of spending their Summer afternoons swimming in the pool. For parents, however, this pastime can quickly turn into a nightmare. That's what happened to Lindsey Kujawa of Delighted Mom during a family pool party. Lindsey and her son Ronin were sitting on the steps to the spa when Lindsey turned to talk to her sister-in-law. In those few seconds, Ronin fell into the water and was tossed around by the jets. Lindsey pulled her son out of the spa and had him cough out any water, but a few hours later she was rushing to the hospital to save her son from secondary drowning. While not as common as the typical underwater drowning, secondary drowning is just as dangerous, contributing to 1,000 children's deaths that are caused from water-related accidents each year. Because the reaction is not immediate, many people don't know how to identify secondary drowning or what to do if it occurs. Here, everything you need to know about this silent but scary pool problem.

Learn More About the Man Who Was at the Center of Princess Diana's "Squidgygate" Scandal
It's been 20 years since Princess Diana died, and her legacy and life still fascinate the public, especially when it comes to the romance department. One of the topics that has always enticed fans of the former princess is her love life - both when she was married and when she was single.
One of her most-talked about romances - or rumored romances - was with James Gilbey, who was actually the second James that she was linked to (the first being James Hewitt), and we're still fascinated by their relationship.
So who was Gilbey? The British native was one of Diana's childhood friends and her rumored lover during her marriage to Prince Charles. Gilbey was a Lotus car dealer when his life first came into the spotlight, and both he and his romance with Diana were brought to the world's attention.
Their alleged affair became rather public when intimate phone calls between Diana and Gilbey were released to the press in 1992. The scandalous tapes - which were reportedly leaked after the British intelligence agency GCHQ recorded them - revealed that Diana might've been more than just friends with Gilbey, despite what the two had previously claimed. At the time, the tapes were dubbed "Squidgygate" by the press because Gilbey continually called Diana "Squidgy" in addition to "darling" throughout the calls.
After the tapes were released, it was reported that whatever was going on between Diana and Gilbey at the time the conversations were recorded in 1989 had already ended.
A Guide to Diana's Royal Titles
Diana's romance - and "Squidgygate" - happened at a time when the princess and her husband were already having marital problems. Diana was unhappy because Charles was having an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles (now Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall), and she was under immense pressure and scrutiny as a member of the royal family.
Though Prince Charles and Diana officially divorced in 1996 and the princess passed away in a tragic car accident in 1997, to this day, Gilbey has not spoken publicly about their rumored relationship.
In 2014, Gilbey left behind his semiscandalous past and settled down for good when he married Lavinia Hadsley-Chaplin. After dating since 2006, the former car dealer and heir to a massive gin fortune said "I do" and also became a father to Lavinia's five children.
Prince Charles Made a "Joke" After Harry's Birth That Actually Broke Diana's Heart
Princess Diana was many things to many people, but above all else, she was an adoring and doting mother of two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. While much is known about Diana's special connection with her boys, there's one thing people may not know about Harry's birth in particular: Prince Charles "desperately" wanted a little girl, and Diana, knowing that she was carrying a baby boy, kept the secret from her husband throughout her entire pregnancy.
About a year after Prince William was born in June 1982, Diana was under pressure to produce a spare to the heir. In September 1983, Buckingham Palace announced that Diana was pregnant for a second time, but sadly, she suffered a miscarriage later that week while at the Balmoral estate in Scotland. Cut to early 1984, when Charles and Diana found out that they were expecting again. During her difficult pregnancy, Diana told friends, "I don't think I'm made for the production line, but it's all worth it in the end."
In September 1984, Diana gave birth to a baby boy, Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor, after nine hours of labor and zero drugs. In Andrew Morton's Diana: Her True Story, the princess revealed her husband's "dismay" after welcoming their second child: "Charles always wanted a girl," she said. "Harry was a boy. His first comment was, 'Oh God, it's a boy.' His second: 'And he's even got red hair.'" Charles discounted the comment as a joke, but Diana was extremely hurt and offended: not only had she just endured nine f*cking hours of natural birth, but her older sisters and younger brother, Earl Spencer, all happen to have red hair, a trait that runs in the Spencer family. What's worse, at Harry's christening in December, Charles reportedly told Diana's mother, "We were so disappointed - we thought it would be a girl."
Diana went on to explain that she and Charles were "the closest we've ever, ever been and ever will be" in the weeks before Harry was born, adding, "Then, suddenly, as Harry was born, it just went bang, our marriage. The whole thing went down the drain." She went on to admit that "something inside me closed off," after Harry's birth - especially because Charles had picked up his longtime affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. "By then, I knew Charles had gone back to his lady," she said of the rekindled romance.
Harry's red hair led many to believe that his biological father was actually James Hewitt, an English Army captain who was hired to teach Diana, William, and Harry horseback riding. While Diana and James did carry on an affair in the late '80s, they didn't meet until two years after Harry's birth. And Charles's desire for a baby girl has held strong after all these years, as evidenced by his excitement over the birth of Princess Charlotte in 2015. "I was hoping for a granddaughter - someone to look after me when I am very old," he told reporters during a public engagement that year. "I am really rather thrilled."
The Trump Family Is Bankrupting the Secret Service, Because Vacations
It's no secret that President Donald Trump is used to a certain kind of lifestyle. From weekly trips to Mar-a-Lago at $3.6 million a pop to a 17-day "working vacation" at his New Jersey golf club, it's also clear that he hasn't made any attempts to tamp down his jet-setting since taking office. But while bankrolling the gallivanting of a real estate developer or reality television star was Trump's prerogative before he took office, he's now reliant on the federal government and the taxpayers to foot the bill. To make matters worse, his entire family requires security protection when they travel. And like the president himself, none of them can stay still for very long. As a result, countless people have tried to slow the Trump family's roll - none of whom have found any sort of lasting success. That is, until now.
On Aug. 21, USA Today reported that the Secret Service budget had been depleted and "more than 1,000 agents have already hit the federally mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances that were meant to last the entire year." That's right: it's August, and the Trumps have officially maxed out the budget for their protection. While some of the weight can be shifted to the fact that Trump has 11 more people under protection than the previous administration did, it's hard to explain away some of the more egregious spends. Take, for example, "some $60,000 on golf cart rentals alone," the costs associated with Melania and Barron Trump spending the majority of this year living in the heart of Manhattan, or the fact that "Eric Trump's business travel to Uruguay cost the Secret Service nearly $100,000 just for hotel rooms."
"I would rarely leave the White House because there's so much work to be done. I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president that takes time off," Trump told a reporter back in 2015. And now, as the director of the Secret Service pleads his case on the Hill for a budget increase and the overtime can't be stacked up any further, Trump may soon have to do something completely out of character: be true to his word.

Introverts are seriously amazing, but certain aspects of the personality type can lead to some kind of . . . awkward situations. An awesome artist and self-proclaimed extreme introvert put these situations into comics that will be SO real to introverts who live them daily. We're cringing/relating on all sorts of levels.

This Optical Illusion Is Blowing the Internet's Collective Mind
Terrific optical illusion by Victoria Skye. @RichardWiseman @chriscfrench http://pic.twitter.com/IeSFupAcfU
- Martin S Taylor (@martinstaylor) August 7, 2017
From a brick wall to the dress, we may be the most technologically advanced generation, but there's nothing we enjoy more than a good mental magic trick. It should come as no surprise, then, that any time someone spots one of these gems in the wild, it immediately makes its way to social media - and immediately goes viral. The latest example of our enduring love for optical mind-trickery, which made its way to the internet this week, comes in the form of a magician's brand new take on a classic optical illusion.
Fifty-eight-year-old Roswell, GA, resident Victoria Skye bills herself as a magical entertainer and illusion artist, and her personal website is chock-full of reasons why that's the perfect way to describe her work. But it took Martin S. Taylor posting one of her artworks to Twitter on Aug. 7 to make her truly go viral - and to spark a fierce debate over whether or not the many lines in the image are bent or, as many claim, are parallel and straight.
The "café wall" illusion is traditionally "an optical illusion produced by a black and white rectangular tessellation when the tiles are shifted in a zigzag pattern," according to Wolfram Alpha, which also confirms that "While the pattern seems to diverge towards the upper and lower right corners in the upper figure, the gray lines are actually parallel." In other words, it's all about the combination of math and colors, which Skye excellently illustrated in her image.
Don't worry, though, if you don't really see what you think you're supposed to - you're not alone. The internet is awash with individuals speculating on whether they had just fallen victim to a hoax, or if there was something wrong with a large percentage of the population's brains. Fortunately, thanks to mathematicians over the past couple of centuries, we can unequivocally say that the lines are in fact straight. You just have to convince your mind to see what it's supposed to.
Real talk: When you do actually see it correctly after staring at it for hours, boy is it a satisfying feeling. Spend some time with a full-size version of Skye's photo, below.
Paris Hilton's Miniature Mansion For Her Dogs Is the Most Paris Hilton Thing Ever
Paris Hilton: heiress, reality television star, occasional DJ, and dedicated dog-lover. At the height of her fame, Paris seemed to never step outside without her Chihuahua, Tinkerbell. Though Tinkerbell has since passed, Paris has a lot of love to give to her furry friends. So much so that she built a miniature mansion to house her many dogs.
In a tweet, Paris enlightened her followers about her so-called doggy mansion
, saying, "My dogs live in this two-story doggy mansion that has air conditioning, heating, designer furniture, and a chandelier." Then she added her signature, "loves it." The over-the-top mansion made people promptly freak the f*ck out, and it even garnered its own Twitter moment.
Though this might be the first time many are seeing the doggy mansion, it's well-documented on her separate Instagram account for her pets. Paris frequently shares tours of the mansion, as well as videos of herself visiting her sweet dogs. If this insane dog house has peaked your interest, take a virtual tour, ahead.
The Easiest Way to Clean the Lint Vent in Your Dryer (and You Should Do It Today!)
House fires caused by dryer lint are a real thing. I don't want to add to your list of worries, so let me share a secret with you: cleaning this part of your front-loading dryer is easy. Plus, I have a great hack for you involving an empty paper towel roll. You always knew there was a use for those things! Here's the simple three-step process. Bonus: cleaning your dryer will make it run more efficiently and save you a bit of dough by saving energy.
1. Clean the Lint Trap
You should clear the lint trap, the little screen at the front of the dryer, with every load. Simply pull the lint off the screen and put it in the trash. Dryer sheets can clog the screen, making your dryer less efficient, so you should give the screen a scrub periodically - twice a year will do. Here's how: pull the entire screen out, take it to the sink, gently scrub it with dish soap and a bottle brush (be careful not to tear or puncture the screen), rinse, and dry. While it's drying, tackle cleaning the vent.
2. Clean the Vent
The vent, essentially a hose between the lint trap and the outside of your house, can become clogged with lint, too. You want to vacuum this vent, but chances are high your vacuum nozzle designed for crevices is too thick to fit down into the vent. But I found a simple solution for this issue on the blog Intentional Mom. To extend the vacuum hose, take the interior tube of a paper towel roll, and tape it onto the nozzle. You need to make it airtight so the vacuum has adequate suction. Squish the end of the tube to make it narrow, shove it down the vent, and vacuum all that excess lint.
3. Clean the Vent From the Outside
You get bonus points for this part. Find where the dryer vent hose exits your house, open the vent door, and vacuum out this end, too. I found a surprising amount of lint hanging out in the end of my vent.
A Definitive Ranking of the Costco Food Court Offerings
One of the biggest mistakes one can make while grocery shopping is tackling the task on an empty stomach. Big box retailer Costco Wholesale never fails to come to the rescue on this front, offering a stocked food court conveniently right in front of the checkout line. The food court has both perks and drawbacks. On the one hand, it's very quick and inexpensive, but on the other, several items are prepared well before you even order. However, after performing a taste test on all of the menu's main offerings, my fiancé and I found that there are a couple of other winners within the bunch. Read on to see what our surprising number one pick is.

The 1 Thing You Should Try Adding to Your Scrambled Eggs
Some people add milk to their scrambled eggs, some prefer heavy cream, and some scramble them in bacon fat. Even if you think you've tried it all, there's one sneaky ingredient you might not have added before, and that's worcestershire sauce. I found this idea in a Facebook comment on our post about how chefs scramble eggs, and I knew I wanted to try it myself because I'm a huge fan of the incredibly savory condiment. The sauce, which is typically used for steak and Bloody Marys, is made of anchovies (yes, really), garlic, vinegar, molasses, salt, onions, chili peppers, and other spices.
So how does it taste in scrambled eggs? It's interesting, but in a good way - I totally approve. I recommend adding 1/4 teaspoon of worcestershire sauce per two eggs and whisking everything together well before cooking your eggs low and slow. The sauce is already really salty, so you don't need to add any more salt. The eggs develop a slightly tangy, smoky, umami-rich flavor that's unlike any scrambled egg I've had before. If you have worcestershire sauce on hand anyway, give this a try. It just might become your favorite scrambled eggs recipe.

7 Gel Manicure Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Nails
There are many reasons I love a gel manicure, but a few in particular stand out. I'm obsessed that they require zero drying time, which equates to zero probability of smudging. They last for at least two weeks. That enduring glossy finish gets me to book salon visits over and over again. But when it comes time to take off the lacquer, I admittedly get a little lazy. When choosing between squeezing a removal appointment into a busy schedule or picking and peeling on my way home from work, I'm often guilty of the latter.
It turns out that's not the only error I've been making when it comes to gel polish. Chances are, you - and your favorite salon! - are making some of them, too. That's precisely why I enlisted the help of celebrity manicurist Elle. The nail tech (who has painted the talons of Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Blake Lively) revealed that seemingly simple things can cause your gels and natural nails to prematurely crack and peel. But when applied and cared for correctly, these glossy lacquers aren't harmful to your claws at all. Read on to discover her top nail-saving tips.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are Expecting Their Third Child
Get ready for another royal baby! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have just announced that the duchess is expecting their third child. A statement was released by Kensington Palace on Monday morning, stating that "the Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news."
The palace also revealed that Kate is once again suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, the severe nausea and vomiting she also suffered when she was pregnant with both Prince George and Princess Charlotte. As a result, she will no longer be carrying out a planned engagement at Hornsey Road Children's Centre in London, and it's likely she will also need to forego future events.

Kate's last public appearance was less than a week ago, when she visited the White Garden at Kensington Palace with Prince William, on the eve of the 20th anniversary of his mother Princess Diana's death. It's wonderful to hear such exciting news from the palace so soon after such a somber anniversary.

The $2 Product Beyoncé Uses on Her Eyebrows Will Shock You

Any beauty trick that's good enough for Beyoncé, is good enough for us. We we have to admit, however, that we were taken by surprise when we heard how she achieves flawless eyebrows.
In an interview with E! News during BeautyCon, Sir John, longtime makeup artist of Beyoncé, revealed that his top beauty tip is to use an Elmer's Glue Stick ($2 for 4) on eyebrows. "My [favorite] beauty hack is to use Elmer's glue stick as the ultimate brow gel in the heat. It doesn't clog your pores and it washes off easily," he said.
This may explain how the star keeps her brows looking perfect even while performing under bright stage lights. Consider this one genius solution for your makeup-melting problem in the Summer heat.

Here's What Happens When You Ask Americans to Locate North Korea on a Map
President Donald Trump threatened to unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea on Aug. 8, leaving many wondering if the ongoing war of words between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un might be taking a more serious turn. But while Twitter was biting its nails and preparing for the apocalypse, our country's late-night shows took an altogether different tack: they lambasted the hell out of the whole scenario. The real winner of the night, however, was Jimmy Kimmel.
Kimmel and his crew took to the streets of Los Angeles armed with the knowledge that, according to a new CNN poll, 50 percent of Americans believe that action needed to be taken against North Korea. His task? To figure out just how many people can identify where the country - one which 72 percent of those polled believe is capable of a strike against the US - is located on a map. And it should come as no surprise that a whole lot of people had almost no idea what the answer to that question was.
There may still be a whole lot of uncertainty about just how this whole scenario will shake out, but it's abundantly clear that as a country we really need to spend a bit more time buried in some geography textbooks - or at least not weigh in on foreign policy before we've done so.
11 Times Princess Diana Showed William and Harry the Ropes on a Royal Tour
Prince George and Princess Charlotte have joined their parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, on their last two tours, which means they are very much following in the footsteps of their father, Prince William, and uncle, Prince Harry. It hadn't always been the case that royal parents would be accompanied by their offspring, and little princes and princesses would typically be left at home with their nannies, often for months at a time. However, when Princess Diana and Prince Charles were about to embark on a royal tour in 1983, Diana insisted they take their 9-month-old son William, and a new way of touring was born. From a young age, William and Harry accompanied their parents on many tours and engagements - here, we take a look at some of their best moments with their mom.
Marble Lips Are the Mesmerizing Makeup Trend We Can't Get Enough Of

9 Things You Need to Register For, According to Moms (and One Dad) Who’ve Been Through It All
Creating a baby registry is exciting, but it's hard to know exactly what you're going to need for this crazy motherhood ride before it has even begun. Diapers, sure, but how many is too many? (Spoiler: there's no such thing.) If you plan on breastfeeding, do you even need formula? And which magical carrier frees up your hands but doesn't kill your back?
There's no better authority on these and other registry questions than moms who have seen a thing or two and also learned from their fellow mom friends postbaby. They know what will stay in the box, what you'll be running to the store for at 3 a.m., and what unexpected godsends will make life a whole lot easier.
To give you a jump on this lifelong learning curve called motherhood, we asked some real-life moms - and a dad - to tell us what would top their lists in a registry do-over.
The Details of Laci Peterson's Murder Will Still Chill You to Your Very Core
There are very few murder investigations that capture the attention of the entire country, but the ones that do usually stay with people forever. Laci Peterson became one of those cases when she went missing on Christmas Eve in 2002. While any missing persons case is devastating, people became enamored with the beautiful 27-year-old because she was eight months pregnant with her son, who was to be named Connor, when she vanished. Those closest to Laci, and the general public, couldn't understand why someone would want to hurt a woman who didn't appear to have any enemies. But as the days turned into weeks following her disappearance, the details of what happened slowly began to fill in the confusing puzzle, and it still remains one of the most chilling murder cases in recent years.
Laci's husband (and Connor's dad), Scott Peterson, quickly became the police's main suspect due to his bizarre behavior, his repeated refusals to take a polygraph test, and his general lack of interest in the investigation's progress. Scott was eventually found guilty of murdering his wife and unborn son and was sentenced to death in 2004. He is currently on death row at San Quentin State Prison in California, where he recently spoke out for the first time in over a decade for A&E's docuseries The Murder of Laci Peterson. Here are six heartbreaking facts from one of the most infamous murder cases in history.
1. Laci Was Last Seen on Christmas Eve 2002
On the morning of Dec. 24, 2002, Scott left their Modesto, CA, home to go fishing, while Laci took their dog for a walk. Later that afternoon, a neighbor saw their dog wandering around while still wearing its leash. Scott later told police that after leaving their house that morning, he went to his nearby warehouse to send emails and get his boat, which was backed up by email time stamps and a warehouse receipt. He said that after about 90 minutes of fishing, he returned home to an empty house and showered, thinking Laci had gone over to her mom's house. Scott called Laci's parents that evening to ask if they knew where she was, and they immediately called police to report that she was missing.
2. Scott Quickly Became a Suspect
While many murder victims die at the hands of someone they know, it was Scott's questionable behavior in the days after Laci's disappearance that put him at the top of the suspects list. Police reported that Scott almost immediately began referring to Laci in the past tense as if she wasn't alive anymore, even before they found her body. But the biggest bombshell of all came when Scott's mistress, Amber Frey, revealed their relationship to the media shortly after she learned about Laci's disappearance. Amber agreed to record her phone conversations with Scott without his knowledge, and she told police that two weeks before Laci went missing, Scott had told her he was a widower and that this would be the first Christmas without his wife. Scott was also photographed laughing and smiling at a vigil for Laci just a few days after she went missing, where he called Amber and pretended he was partying in Paris on New Year's Eve.
3. Laci and Connor's Bodies Were Mutilated
In April 2003, four months after Laci went missing, a couple out walking their dog discovered Connor's body washed up on the San Francisco Bay shore. Plastic tape was reportedly found around his neck, and there was also a large cut on the right side of his body. One day later, Laci's body washed ashore just one mile from where Connor was found. She was decapitated, both forearms were missing, her right foot was severed, and the bottom half of her left leg was missing. Because her body was badly decomposed, her exact cause of death couldn't be determined.
4. Scott Appeared to Be on the Run When He Was Arrested
After months of speculation, Scott was arrested on April 18, 2003, at a golf course in San Diego, where he said he was staying to avoid media attention. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying $15,000 in cash, four cell phones, his brother's ID, and camping gear and had dyed his hair blond.
5. Scott Was Sentenced to Death
His trial began in June 2004, and a judge sentenced him to die by lethal injection that November. Similarly to O.J. Simpson's trial, people all over the country gathered in public places to hear the verdict and celebrate his conviction together.
6. He Still Maintains His Innocence
In a recorded phone call with his sister-in-law, Janey, from June 2017, Scott spoke from his prison cell about the moment the guilty verdict was read, saying he "had no idea" the jury would think he did it. "When they told me, I had just a terrible physical reaction," he said. "I mean it was a really emotional, physical reaction. I couldn't feel my feet on the floor. I couldn't feel the chair I was sitting in. My vision was even a little blurry. And I just had this weird sensation that I was falling forward - and forward and down and there was going to be no end to this falling forward and down, like there was no floor to land on. I, I was staggered by it. I had no idea it was coming." Scott is still appealing his case.
