12 Credit Card Perks That Are Almost Too Good to Be True

Looking for a way to feel good about your impulse online purchases or late-night Uber rides? Then maximize your credit card points. Thanks to sign-up and spending bonuses, I've enjoyed Dom Pérignon on my way from Bangkok to Sydney and had an in-flight meal served by a chef while en route from Los Angeles to Istanbul, all on credit card miles. But first-class travel is just one benefit of putting purchases on plastic. Companies like American Express and Chase have upped their games, giving millennial consumers access to experiences they might not have otherwise.

Millennials make up more than half of Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers, according to a Chase spokesperson. That card created a legit frenzy when it debuted in 2016, thanks to the mega 100,000 points sign-up bonus and triple points on anything deemed "travel." With a broad definition, Chase imagines travel to include taking an Uber to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Chinatown and then riding the subway to karaoke before catching a taxi home. Amex has also created a new category of perks that favor experiences instead of "stuff." Janey Whiteside, who heads American Express's global benefits services, says millennial cardmembers are passionate about travel, dining, fashion, and entertainment. "We look to provide access to exclusive experiences," she explains. To get you started, here is a list of 12 little-known - yet actually exciting - credit card perks you'll actually want to use.

Money back on Amazon purchases: Chase's new Amazon Prime Rewards Credit Card offers five percent back on anything you buy on Amazon.com.

Free Uber rides: Amex recently announced Uber Rides with Platinum, which provides up to $200 annually in Uber credits and automatic Uber VIP status where available.

A free Southwest ticket: The Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card, from Chase, helps you get a coveted companion pass faster because each purchase gets you points toward the free ticket.

Price adjustments: Cards like Chase Freedom will reimburse the difference if an item you purchase with the card is advertised for less within 90 days of when you bought it. Citi offers something similar if a price drops within 60 days.

A new cell phone: Some cards from Citi will cover repairs or offer a refund if you lose or damage your phone (or other item) within 120 days of purchase.

Museum days: Any Bank of America credit card holder is eligible for the Museums on Us program, which offers free access during the first full weekend of every month to a variety of museums and cultural institutions across America, including more than 10 museums in New York City. Merrill Lynch and US Trust credit card holders are also eligible.

Tickets to Hamilton: The American Express Platinum card offers concert and theater access, which has included hard-to-get tickets to Hamilton at face value for qualifying cardmembers. Amex has ongoing offers for high-profile entertainment access.

A shower at the airport: Platinum cardholders can access American Express's airport Centurion Lounge throughout the country and the convenient shower suites. An airport shower is perfect if you have a long layover or are taking a flight after a long day. Cards like Citi's AAdvantage Executive World Elite MasterCard give access to airline-specific lounges, like American Airlines' Admiral Club, which often come with a shower, too.

Celebrity sightings at Sundance: At last year's Sundance Film Festival, Chase Sapphire Preferred customers received perks like a warm lounge and priority box-office tickets for screenings.

SoulCycle at Coachella: Amex opened a Platinum House for 2017's first weekend at Coachella, where cardholders could take a SoulCycle class and also enjoy celebrity DJ sets and free food and drinks.

A feast in Aspen: Amex teamed up with Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard for exclusive tastings and more at the 2017 FOOD & WINE Classic.

Free wine tasting: Planning a trip to California wine country? Dozens of wineries in Sonoma County offer complementary tastings and other perks for Visa Signature cardholders.

Alcohol-Infused Marshmallows Are Here to Make Boozy S'mores a Reality

Sit back, relax, and allow me to set the picture-perfect scene for you. It's a chilly Fall evening and you've got all your s'mores ingredients lined up in front of your fireplace. You bite into that perfectly melty, slightly burnt s'more while listening to the crackling fire and cozying up in a fuzzy blanket. There's nothing that could possibly make this glorious scenario even better, right? Pshh, wrong!

Enter boozy marshmallows, the alcohol-infused treat that's totally about to change your s'mores routine for the better. The Naked Marshmallow Co. makes these alcoholic cubes of delight in three tasty flavors: Elderflower & London Gin, Espresso Martini, and Raspberry & Prosecco. Each of these genius food hybrids is made by hand using all-natural ingredients. You certainly won't be catching a buzz from indulging in these melt-in-your-mouth bites, as they all contain less than three percent of each alcohol (gin, coffee liqueur, and Prosecco). But hey, it's still a pretty sweet concept to infuse freakin' marshmallows with booze, even if it is a minimal amount.

The geniuses over at Naked Marshmallow Co. are based in England, which unfortunately means that getting your hands on these cubed masterpieces may prove to be a tad tricky. They are available for purchase through online retailers like Firebox and Amazon, but both options don't currently ship stateside. We have reached out to the company for additional shipping information and will update this post with that very vital, necessary-to-life tidbit once it becomes available.

In the meantime, feel free to drool over the tasty pictures of these boozy marshmallows ahead. And maybe even consider finally calling up your Great-Aunt Beatrice in London to get on her good side and place an order on your behalf.

Who Are Ozzy's Real Parents on American Horror Story? Here's 1 Crazy Theory

The following contains spoilers for American Horror Story season seven.

The premiere of American Horror Story: Cult introduces us to a seemingly sweet and stable family whose lives are changed following the 2016 election. There's the level-headed Ivy Mayfair-Richards (Alison Pill) and her wife Ally (Sarah Paulson), who is grappling with her crippling anxiety and many phobias that have all been heightened since the unexpected election of Donald Trump. Ivy and Ally are also parents to a young son, Ozzy. One exchange in the premiere, however, raises doubts about Ozzy's biological parents.

Winter Anderson (Billie Lourd), the sister of crazed Trump fanatic Kai Anderson (Evan Peters), is hired as Ozzy's babysitter. Shortly thereafter, it's revealed that she probably has some ulterior motives. Her first night on the job, Winter questions Ozzy about who carried him as a baby. "I forgot. Maybe they never told me," Ozzy replies. When Winter presses him about his potential biological father, Ozzy says, "I'm supposed to say, 'Every family is special in their own way.'" Though Winter changes the subject, it's a telling exchange that the show will certainly revisit at a later time.

For now, however, fans are casting their predictions. On Reddit, one theory suggests that Ozzy's father could be this season's villain: Kai. OK - we know this would be an incredibly dark outcome, but this is American Horror Story, after all, and the theory is surprisingly plausible.

For starters, Ozzy does bear a resemblance to both Ivy and Kai. It's likely that Ivy carried Ozzy due to Ally's long-lasting mental health issues. There's the possibility that Kai was simply the sperm donor, and then there's a more sinister possibility. A popular theory currently floating around posits that Ivy is secretly working with Kai and the creepy clown squad - hence why she's always minimizing Ally's fears, trying to disprove her clown sightings, and pushing her to take her prescription medication. Taking it a step further, perhaps Ivy is also somehow in a romantic relationship with Kai and the two conceived naturally.

Ivy & Kai secret love child = oz from AmericanHorrorStory

We know it sounds unbelievable, but we really can't stress enough how batsh*t crazy American Horror Story can get. In the meantime, we'll continue to look for clues regarding this impending reveal.

Who's Still on Arya's Kill List on Game of Thrones?

Arya Stark is back in Winterfell on Game of Thrones, and she's in full revenge mode (with a side of some family bonding). Now that she's picked up a few tricks from the time she spent at the House of Black and White, she's using them to avenge her family, and she even dispatches of one of the most devious characters in the season finale - no tricks necessary. Arya had been merrily on her way to kill the queen, but decides to stop over at Winterfell right quick. When she finally reunites with her family, she also mentions the kill list - which Sansa initially laughs at, but then realizes it's a legit thing when Three-Eyed-Raven Bran mentions it too.

Arya's Kill List, if you don't remember, is the list of people she started reciting a few seasons ago after losing almost her entire family at the hands of various villains. There were 11 names on the list originally, which the fiercest Stark girl has not forgotten (except to eliminate one). If you've forgotten who's on it and what they did, we're reminding you of that and whether they're still alive (fun fact: the list is slightly different in the book than on the TV show).

Outlander: All the Season 3 Details You Could Ever Want (Including the Premiere Date!)

The season two finale of Outlander ends with a devastating mix of hope and heartbreak, which makes the prospect of waiting quite a while for season three all the more painful. Although not too many definitive facts about next season have been released yet, we're confident that it will be 1.) a roller coaster ride of emotions, and 2.) provide us with plenty more hot scenes between Jamie and Claire. On top of those certainties, we've rounded up every tidbit of information concerning the upcoming season that we could get our hands on in order to ease the Droughtlander currently plaguing us all (which now includes the premiere date!).

A Brief History of Parks Denton, the Catfish Who Set Gay Twitter Ablaze

On the night of Sept. 5, Gay Twitter was sent into a downward spiral thanks to one very special man. His name is Parks Denton, and he does not exist. It turns out, whoever was posing as the Twitter personality had been at it for several years, according to NY Mag. He'd been favoriting tweets and openly flirting with other gay men on Twitter. He'd been sliding all up into multiple DMs. He'd even been agreeing to dates (and then not showing up)! But his (Her? Their?) perfect illusion came crashing down in one night, thanks to the collective efforts of various Twitter users.

Many have shared tales of their interactions with Parks Denton, but one that's been getting a lot of attention comes from @thedealwithalex. His full, 11-tweet story tells of a cute man who followed him on Twitter once upon a time: "half Asian, ottery, had two ear piercings like in the middle of his ear." This Parks Denton character then proceeded to change his avatar to a picture of someone else completely before he stood up our storyteller for drinks. Alex even presented proof of his story in the form of an "I got catfished" tweet he sent at the time.

Everything came to a head on the night of Sept. 5, when a group of Twitter users joined forces to confront the faker. Twitter user @chillowsky tweeted, "@ParksDenton your profile pic is actually my friend. That's hella creepy, stop. @Twitter this is why I reported this account." Another user, @Sakel, tweeted, "@ParksDenton get your fake ugly ass off my friend's accounts dnt be so stupid 2 take someones pictures who lives in the same city and is gay." Parks Denton - or more accurately, the person behind the accounts - quickly wiped the internet of his presence.

Lest we or Mr. Denton forget, the internet keeps receipts. In the interest of protecting the person whose pictures "Parks" used, we're not going to include any of the actual photos from the fiasco. We will, however, include a hilarious collection of reactions to the situation that ignited Twitter on the night of Sept. 5 and the morning of Sept. 6.

3 Ingenious Ways Scott McGillivray Worked Storage Into This Tiny Kitchen

No one knows better than HGTV's Scott McGillivray that every kitchen has a unique set of issues and challenges. In this small kitchen, Scott was tasked with accommodating an eating area, full set of appliances, and tons of storage, all while keeping it as open, airy, and clutter-free as possible. "When I was working on this small-space kitchen I incorporated as much storage as I could," he explains. Keep reading below to find out in his words, exactly how he did it.

Island

The homeowner didn't want upper cabinets so I hid some in the base of the island and then implemented my special trick. Hidden behind each of these single front panels is a drawer within a drawer. What I love about these is that you can use every bit of space, and almost double the amount of storage you would have if it were just a regular cabinet with a shelf. It's easy to access the back of the shelves, and you maximize every inch.

Sink

The sink is probably the best feature in this entire kitchen. Not only is it huge, it has graduated ledges on the sides so you can fit its custom cutting board, colander, dish pan and drying rack - either one at a time or several at once. It becomes a functional workstation and saves tons of counter space. It also helps keep your counter clean and free of clutter.

Appliances

With so many appliances, both large and small, electrical outlets need to be plentiful and smartly placed. After all, you don't want cords hanging across counters, stoves, or anywhere that there's water. I also didn't want to have to install any more outlets in the backsplash or counter than necessary. The solution I came up with in this space was to install outlets directly into the kick plates at the bottom of the island. They're not visible unless you go looking for them, and you can simply place your appliance on the counter above when you need to use it, and unplug and put away when you're done.

One of my favorite features is the appliance garage. It's great for keeping small appliances like coffee makers and toasters accessible but out of sight. And the best part is you can keep them plugged in. The one in this kitchen has an outlet set on a relay so that when you shut the cabinet doors the power automatically shuts off. No need to move things around or fiddle with switches.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Are Reportedly Having Another Baby Girl

News broke on Wednesday that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are expecting their third child via surrogate, and now TMZ is reporting that it's a baby girl. According to sources close to the couple, North, 4, and Saint, 1, will be getting a little sister in January. "Given her health scares in the past, Kim felt the need to hire a surrogacy agency that helped serve as the liaison in finding a healthy woman who would be a great surrogate option for her and Kanye," an insider told People. "Both of them have been super involved in the process. They want everything to be perfect and for the baby to be extremely healthy. They don't want any complications and Kim is providing an ideal eating regimen and diet so everyone knows what the baby is consuming before it's born." We can't wait for the little one to arrive!

Everything That's Happened Since Jesse Williams and Aryn Drake-Lee Split

Jesse Williams split from his wife of nearly five years, real estate broker Aryn Drake-Lee, in April 2017. While we still don't know what exactly went wrong, new details about their divorce have slowly been emerging. The two are currently in the middle of an intense custody battle over their children, Maceo and Sadie, and Jesse appears to have moved on with his The Butler costar Minka Kelly. Keep reading for a look at everything that's happened since Jesse and Aryn called it quits.

April 11, 2017: Jesse Files For Divorce

The Grey's Anatomy actor split from Aryn after nearly five years of marriage. According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Jesse was the one who filed the divorce petition and is requesting legal and physical custody of Maceo, 1, and Sadie, 3. He also checked the box asking the court to deny Aryn any spousal support and they are instead working it out in mediation.

June 21, 2017: Things Start to Get Ugly

In court documents obtained by Us Weekly, Jesse's attorneys stated that Aryn refused his request to spend more time with their kids, even though Jesse insisted he's "always been an active, involved, hands-on dad." "Aryn restricts my time with the children and decides when, and for how long I may have them," Jesse claimed. "She has rejected, without any reason, each and every request I have made to have the children sleepover at my residence. On the few days that I have the children, Aryn has insisted that my time with the children be limited during the week to approximately two-and-a-half hours per day, despite my requests for more time, including overnights with the children."

Aryn's lawyer, Jill Hersh, later responded to Jesse's claims with a statement of her own, telling Us Weekly, "Protecting the privacy and well-being of their children is of paramount importance to Aryn Drake-Lee Williams. It is unfortunate that Mr. Williams has chosen to draw public attention to this difficult time and transition for their family. Aryn is solely interested in the best interests of their children, supporting a healthy relationship with both parents, and protecting the children's privacy. Therefore, she will not comment any further on Mr. Williams's unilateral and unfortunate public allegations."

July 7, 2017: Jesse Steps Out With Another Woman

Jesse was spotted catching a movie in LA with his The Butler costar Minka Kelly. The two kept a low profile in a black jackets and jeans and made sure to steer clear of any PDA. Prior to their outing, Minka and Jesse first sparked dating rumors when they were both in Paris for a video game shoot.

July 10, 2017: Jesse Breaks His Silence

In an 11-minute Tidal video for JAY-Z's latest album, Footnotes For 4:44, Jesse opened up about their divorce for the first time. The actor joined JAY-Z, Chris Rock, Will Smith, Kendrick Lamar, Anthony Anderson, Aziz Ansari, and other celebrities for a chat about relationships, and without mentioning Aryn by name, addressed cheating rumors. "I was in a relationship 13 years, 13 real years, not five years, not seven years - 13 years," he said. "All of a sudden motherf*ckers are writing think-pieces that I somehow threw a 13-year relationship. Like, the most painful experience I've had in my life, like with a person I've loved with all of my heart - that I threw a person and my family in the trash because a girl I work with is cute."

July 11, 2017: Jesse Moves On

News broke that Jesse had reportedly been dating Minka for "a few months." "They're legit," a source told Us Weekly. The pair has yet to officially confirm their relationship.

Aug. 15, 2017: Aryn Fights For Sole Custody

According to new court documents obtained by TMZ, Aryn is demanding sole custody of their kids and wants a judge to order Jesse to keep his girlfriends away from their children until he dates them for at least six months. She also claims Jesse has a violent temper and noted a road rage incident Jesse had with one of his neighbors in July. Aryn believes Maceo and Sadie are beginning to show signs of psychological damage and would like proceedings to move quicker.

Sept. 6, 2017: Aryn and Jesse Are Granted Joint Legal Custody

After both Jesse and Aryn attended "their hearing on child custody, child visitation, and co-parenting matters regarding their children," the former couple was granted joint legal custody of their two kids. "Aryn is pleased to have an arrangement that will provide stability and continuity for the children so that their best interests are the highest priority," Aryn's attorney, Jill Hersh, said in a statement to People.

According to the documents, "each parent shall be designated as a person that the children's school or activity will contact in the event of an emergency" and "the parents shall have equal access to the children's school, medical, dental and activities records." It also states that "neither parent shall use the children as messengers between them for any purpose" or "use the children's child care provider(s) as a messenger(s) between them for any purpose. Neither parent shall interrogate a child care provider," and that "neither parent shall introduce a person with whom he or she has a romantic relationship to the children until the relationship has endured at least six months."

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel Enjoy a PDA-Filled Date Night at the US Open

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel stepped out for a sweet date night at the US Open in NYC on Saturday. The couple, who will be celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary in October, cuddled up in the stands and shared a few laughs while watching Roger Federer take on Feliciano Lopez. But perhaps the cutest part was when Justin leaned in for a sweet kiss with his wife.

Jessica recently opened up about how she makes her relationship with Justin work, telling Marie Claire, "We have similar values; we believe in loyalty, honesty. We like to have fun. We like a lot of the same things. . . . If you can find that and someone who shares the same values as you, it's like: Score!" Now excuse us while we add this to our list of the sweetest PDA moments from celebrity couples this year.

Why Tyrion Lannister Is the Only Man Sansa Should End Up With on Game of Thrones

The following contains light spoilers for Game of Thrones season seven.

We can expect many exciting things from Game of Thrones season eight, but the one I'm most excited about is Sansa Stark's inevitable reunion with Tyrion Lannister. You might be thinking: "Why would you be excited about Sansa seeing her former husband again, you weirdo?" Well, the answer is easy - because I think that, if Sansa ever decides to give love another shot, it should be with Tyrion. They'd be great together.

The audience wants a happy ending for Sansa, and for many fans, that hope manifests itself as visions of her finally finding the guy or gal of her dreams.

I know, I know . . . we need to give Sansa a break and stop expecting that romance could solve her problems. I'm all about it! I fully support a Game of Thrones that ends with my favorite character as the happily single Lady of Winterfell. But the fact is, the audience wants a happy ending for Sansa, and for many fans, that hope manifests itself as visions of her finally finding the guy or gal of her dreams.

Well, if we're entertaining ideas of Sansa falling in love again - why not with Tyrion? Sure, they've been married once before, but that is a marriage between and man and child; and what's more, it is a marriage that both parties are forced into. A marriage under duress isn't exactly a setup for success, but in the scheme of GOT unions it is a relatively happy one. Despite the other Lannisters' unspeakably cruel treatment of Sansa, she and Tyrion have a mutual respect borne partly out of their agreement not to consummate the marriage.

Eventually, of course, the marriage ends when Sansa flees King's Landing, unintentionally implicating Tyrion in his nephew Joffrey's murder. But as we're reminded when Jon Snow and Tyrion meet at Dragonstone in season seven, there are no hard feelings between the former spouses. So now that Tyrion is headed north with Jon and Daenerys, here's my take on why he and Sansa could actually make a perfect couple should they reconnect at Winterfell.

Why Sansa and Tyrion Are a Perfect Pairing:

  1. He is the only man who has never wanted anything from her. From the start of their relationship, Tyrion is the only man outside of Sansa's family who doesn't manipulate her for his own gain. In fact, he wants nothing more than to make her happy, constantly seeking to make up for his family's awful treatment. On their wedding night, Tyrion swears to Sansa: "I promise you one thing, my lady: I won't ever hurt you." And unlike the other men she interacts with in the series - manipulative Littlefinger, abusive Joffrey Baratheon, and sadistic Ramsay Bolton - Tyrion actually honors his promise.
  2. He respects her boundaries. After they exchange vows, Tyrion refuses to bed Sansa, whom he knows has no interest in sleeping with him. "I won't share your bed. Not until you want me to," he tells her, and when she asks how he'd react if she never wants to sleep with him, he toasts her with: "And now my watch begins." Sansa later endures unspeakable sexual trauma at the hands of one man who doesn't respect her wishes, and constantly has to ward off unwanted romantic advances from Littlefinger. Tyrion is the only one of Sansa's suitors to recognize and even celebrate her boundaries.
  3. He admires her family. In one particularly touching scene during their marriage, Tyrion tells a grieving Sansa about how much he respected her parents and her brother Robb. "What happened to your family was a terrible crime," he tells Sansa gently, adding emphasis to his admiration for her mother's fierceness. Tyrion is also one of Jon Snow's biggest advocates, convincing Daenerys Targaryen to give Jon a chance and eventually helping solidify a powerful alliance between the two houses.
  4. He makes her smile. Somebody who has endured as much pain and abuse as Sansa doesn't have much to smile about, but Tyrion is the cause of several rare instances when Sansa laughs and smiles. Even during one of the darkest periods of her life as Joffrey's prisoner in King's Landing, Tyrion knows how to make Sansa forget her sadness for a moment or two.
  5. Tyrion does his best to protect Sansa. Even before they are wed, Tyrion sticks his neck out to protect Sansa. Most notably, when Joffrey has her stripped and beaten before a court of onlookers, Tyrion immediately puts a stop to the spectacle, covers a humiliated and frightened Sansa with his cloak, and gently escorts her from the hall.
  6. They've both been jaded by love. Neither Sansa nor Tyrion have had it easy when it comes to romance. Sansa's forays into love have resulted in either her family's deaths (courtesy of once-fiancé Joffrey) or extended periods of ghastly physical and emotional abuse (by way of husband Ramsay Bolton). Tyrion, of course, is betrayed by his lover Shae. He once says to Sansa: "The disgraced daughter and the demon monkey. We're perfect for each other!" It seems that they're a good fit not only because of their negative reputations, but also because of their bad luck in love.
  7. They hold each other accountable. The night of their wedding, Sansa gently chides her drunken new husband when he reaches for more wine with: "Is that wise, Tyrion?" As she grows comfortable with Tyrion, she becomes even less afraid of voicing her opinion with him. And he, too, holds her accountable; after the Red Wedding, when Sansa dissolves into depression and makes herself a target for Joffrey, Tyrion tells her: "Sansa, your mother would want you to carry on. You know it's true." They each know how to encourage and chastise the other when appropriate, asserting respectful guidance when necessary for the other's benefit.
  8. She won't be afraid to challenge him. As Lady of Winterfell, Sansa has been anything but meek when voicing her political opinions to Jon Snow. She knows when her diplomatic ideas are right, and she is vocal about how things should be done. Were she and Tyrion to reunite, she would be able to counter his ideas with her own, debating about which course is the correct one.
  9. She understands his complex family dynamic. If anybody understands why Tyrion hates his own siblings, it's Sansa, who spends years with them at King's Landing. While Daenerys questions Tyrion's loyalty to her own cause, wondering why he would leave Cersei and Jaime, Sansa would grasp the idea easily - Tyrion has always been different from the rest of the Lannister clan.
  10. Together, they're unstoppable. With Tyrion's quick wits and clever strategy, and Sansa's years of quiet observance in court, they would make an unbeatable force in the game of thrones. They've each seen the downfall of several major players, and both have a rare gift for ruling fairly, diplomatically, and strategically. Now both trusted advisers of two different rulers, Sansa and Tyrion could provide valuable insight for Jon and Daenerys's future kingdom.

I'm not saying that Sansa needs to find love again, but if she does, Tyrion Lannister is the only guy so far who is close to worthy of her affection. Just write "The Lion and The Wolf" on my tombstone, because I will go down with this ship!

The 1 Move Every Woman Should Do (and It's Not Squats)

There's one word in the world of fitness that millions of women have grown to truly loathe: squats. Just saying it can elicit shrieks from some of the most mentally tough women around. So let's discuss one move every fit woman needs to do in the gym - and it's not squatting. In fact, the single most important exercise to master today for improved fitness, strength, and overall health is the deadlift.

After years of hearing nothing but "squat, squat, squat" from your trainer, you might be confused. The deadlift is similar to the squat in that it forces you to use many muscle groups simultaneously. More muscles worked means more lean muscle and less fat in the long run so that's a win for both squat and deadlifts. The added benefit with the deadlift is that it uses even more muscles in each rep. While the squat is great for your lower body, the deadlift forces your arms and upper body to work too.

Want another reason? According to Toronto-based personal trainer Nathane Jackson, CSCS, author of Nathane Jackson's Whole Health Revolution (coming later in 2016), the deadlift is also the safer option. So, it's safer and works more muscles - we're all in, but how the heck do you do one properly? We covered the basics right here, but because it can be a hard move to truly master (just look at the folks doing them wrong at your local gym), we asked Jackson to pass along some pointers.

First, opt for a bar instead of dumbbells - even if you've got no weight on the bar - to ensure that your grip stays steady and you aren't waving your arms to move the weight. Then you should point your toes straight ahead or slightly outwards. From there, Jackson told us that you should "create a double chin, by pulling the chin back towards your neck and pull your shoulder blades back and down towards the hips and pretend you are squeezing an orange in your arm pits." The next step is the key in the movement: "Simultaneously hinge at the hips and bend at the knees until both hands are gripping the bar (overhand, hook grip) just outside the shins. From here, push through the mid foot and think about driving the hips forward as you stand up straight. Exhale (like you mean it - it's OK to make noise in the gym!) once the bar travels past your knees, being careful not to lean back."

If you nail the deadlift like this and keep it in your regular weekly routine, you'll find that you're sculpting your lower and upper body, while getting stronger and leaner all over. Sounds like it's a good time to do some deadlifts. You can thank us later. Enjoy!

Dee Rees' Netflix Drama, Mudbound, Looks Like an Oscar-Worthy Masterpiece

Dee Rees' Mudbound took Sundance by storm, and now the epic drama is only a few months away from hitting Netflix. The sweeping, ambitious film stars Garrett Hedlund and Jason Mitchell as two soldiers who return home to the Mississippi Delta from World War II to find their families torn apart by the Jim Crow South in which they're struggling to make a livelihood. As both soldiers forge a friendship built on the shared trauma of war, they must face the brutal reality of the intense racism and poverty rooted in their rural town. Watch the trailer above, and catch it when it hits Netflix and select theaters on Nov. 17.

This Old Meme Has a Whole New Meaning Thanks to the DACA Debate

Image Source: Flickr user Mr. Wonderful

Back in the Summer of 2016, a new meme popped up on the internet, remixing the classic, cliché "Roses are red, violets are blue" poem. People used it to turn headlines into touching poems - and mostly to make fun of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. However, as Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Sept. 5 that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would be rescinded, one tweet turned that meme into a "poem" about immigration, and it quickly went viral.

To first understand the original meme, check out a few examples:

The new iteration was captured by Tina Vasquez, a reporter at Rewire News. She tweeted a photo of a man holding up a protest sign with his own take on the rhyme, and it went a little something like this: "Roses are red, tacos are enjoyable. Don't blame Mexicans, 'cause you're unemployable."

Her tweet went viral, with more than 335,000 "likes" and 145,000 retweets. However, the meme-y verse got its start even earlier than the DACA debate. Luke Russert, a former NBC News reporter, tweeted a photo of someone else holding a sign with the same message on April 18, 2016.

This most likely won't be the last time we see this meme; its origins date back to 2012, and, as you can clearly see, there's always a perfect moment to reuse it.

How Your Favorite Chefs Make Flan

When it comes to desserts, flan, like cake, is one that deserves a category all on its own. Although often labor-intensive, it's a treat that many agree is truly worth the wait. A rich and filling take on custard, the jiggly sweet is a staple across Latin America, prompting many chefs to put their own spin on the classic to make a recipe truly their own. Here are five ways your favorite Latino kitchen whizzes are whipping up delicious flan.

Roberto Santibañez: Simple and Straightforward

Robert Santibañez knows that sometimes it's best to keep a simple take when putting a spin on a classic dessert. His flan recipe is still a comforting eggy-based one with a smooth caramel topping and a light touch of cinnamon and citrus. In addition to the usual suspects of cream, sugar, and eggs, Santibañez's recipe includes lime juice, lime and orange zest, and Mexican cinnamon for an added kick.

Jose Garces: With Vanilla and Orange

Jose Garces's thick and creamy vanilla orange flan is a longtime family recipe, with unique ingredients to boot. Featuring melon, basil, olive oil, and salt, this one is sure to be a crowd-pleaser if served alongside fruit or a salad.

Chef Pépin: With Kahlúa and Coffee

Chef Pépin's Kahlúa and coffee flan is sure to be favored by java addicts. Made with the famed liqueur, decaf coffee, and espresso, this one-of-a-kind recipe will leave you happily buzzed.

Marcela Valladolid: Chocolate-Based

Marcela Valladolid's chocoflan recipe is sure to procure some newfound flan-lovers who are normally chocolate loyalists. This flan and cocoa hybrid involves mixing and baking two separate batters that are later married into one fabulous dessert garnished with cajeta (a thick caramel sauce) and pecans.

Ingrid Hoffman: Cheesecake-Inspired

Ingrid Hoffman's cheesecake flan is definitely for those who love a rich and creamy dessert. Similar to traditional cheesecake, this recipe can be stored and refrigerated for up to three days before serving at the perfect consistency. It is also best prepared in individual ramekins.

How to Deal With Grandparents Who Spoil - Before the Damage Is Done

Having grandparents in your child's life is a blessing. Yet, while you should value the time that your little ones have with them, there are some sticky situations that can arise from overeager grandmas and grandpas. If you fear that your parents or in-laws are crossing the line of doting and moving into spoiling territory, it's important to take certain steps in order to preserve their relationship without letting it negatively impact your child's behavior. Check out these tips on how to navigate what to do if your child is becoming a bit bratty thanks to grandparents who refuse to listen to you.

  1. Appreciate it: If your kids are lucky enough to have grandparents who spoil them, to some degree, you should let them. Try to be flexible when it comes to how your parents or in-laws are overindulging - especially if it comes from a place of love - and remember how long they've been looking forward to grandkids.
  2. Be open with your kids about it: From early on, clearly tell your kids that grandparents have different rules. It's OK for grandparents to have special traditions as long as your child doesn't come home with those same expectations. This fosters respect for both ideologies and makes grandparent time feel even more special.
  3. Feel out your comfort level: Many problems begin when grandparents move beyond a parent's comfort level. If your children sense that you're OK with bending the rules for grandparents, they'll still appreciate the special treatment without worrying about getting in trouble with you. If you start feeling uneasy, try not to get upset in front of your child.
  4. Don't let them manipulate you: When you sense that grandparents are deliberately trying to undermine you, it can become a problem. Never let them pit you against the children by saying things like, "Mommy and Daddy won't let you do that, but I will!" If that starts, it's not an indulgence that you should try to get behind for the kids.
  5. Have the difficult talk: Depending on how out of hand things get, you should initiate a serious discussion. This is difficult with parents, but it's also incredibly important - especially if they're around often. If they're doing things to deliberately undermine your parenting capacity, find a time away from your child to go over what's bothering you.
  6. Explain your reasoning: Be sure to discuss the reasoning behind the rules that you'd like your parents to also encourage. Things will go easier during the next visit if they know why something is a major area of concern. This will also make them feel like they're on your team and a part of the solution.
  7. Make a plan ahead of time: If grandparents know what you're trying to enforce ahead of time, everyone will be on the same page before the visit even begins. Keep in mind that grandparents are usually thinking about fun and not about your specific concerns unless you make a point of addressing them.
  8. Set limits: Setting boundaries instead of completely cutting grandparents off can be an effective way to rebuild trust if the discussion doesn't work. When boundaries are broken, it's important to address it that day instead of putting it off so that both grandparents and kids will understand that they can't expect it to happen again.

8 Places in the Home Even Clean People Forget to Wash

Your bed is always made, toilet bowl polished, and coffee table styled just so, but is your house really clean? Filth can quietly build up in unexpected places, from the decor to the appliances. Read on to discover the most overlooked spots to clean - and to learn how you can get them back in tip-top shape.

  • Coffeemaker
  • If your morning java is starting to taste funky, it's probably because your coffeemaker is in need of a cleaning. Hard-water deposits and brewing residue can take over your machine if you don't wash it every month or so by running a 50-50 mix of white vinegar and water through the brew cycle. Turn off the machine halfway through brewing, and let it sit for an hour before turning it back on to complete the cycle. Then run fresh water through it a few times until the vinegar smell is gone. The carafe and filter can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

  • Throw Pillows
  • You know it's important to clean your bedroom pillows, but what about those stylish throw pillows on your sofa? Whether you're using them to prop up your feet after a long day or rest your head during a Netflix binge, they're collecting the same (if not more) dead skin, dust mites, and filth. Be sure to run the vacuum's upholstery attachment over pillows when cleaning the living room, and remove pillow covers for periodic laundering according to the care instructions.

  • Kitchen Trash Can
  • Is that foul odor lingering even after you take the trash out? It could be leftover food debris and bacteria that have made their way into the trash can. Get it clean by hosing out any gunk before spraying with a disinfectant and an odor-eliminating product and giving it a thorough scrub down.

  • Curtains and Upholstery
  • They might look clean to the naked eye, but curtains and upholstery trap everything from pollen and dust mites to bacteria and mold. Take the vacuum to them regularly, and for especially dirty fabrics, check the label to see if washing or professional cleaning is an option.

  • Dishwasher
  • This one might seem counterintuitive, but even dish-cleaning machines require cleaning. Dishwashers get clogged with food debris, soap scum, hard-water deposits, and even mold. Start by cleaning out the filter of the dishwasher - yes, your dishwasher has a filter, and if this is the first time you're learning of it, odds are yours is clogged with old food particles - and then run a heavy-duty cleaning agent through the wash cycle. We're partial to baking soda bombs.

  • Bathroom Decor
  • From the cup you hold your toothbrush in to the glass jars atop the toilet, you would be surprised how bacteria spreads around the bathroom. Give all your bathroom accessories a good antiseptic rubdown when you're cleaning the bathroom.

  • Washing Machine
  • If you've ever noticed that your clothes smell less than fresh after being washed, then it's probably time to clean your washing machine. With all the water and damp clothes that go through them, these machines are especially susceptible to mold and mildew. You can clean your washing machine by running a mix of white vinegar and baking soda through the hottest cycle available.

  • Knobs, Handles, and Switches
  • Based on the number of dirty hands grabbing at them, knobs, handles, and light switches seem like an obvious place to disinfect, but they're frequently overlooked. Don't forget to address these bacteria hot spots when wiping down places like the kitchen and bathroom.

Set Your Alarms Now: The iPhone 8 Is Coming in Early September

It's almost that time of year, where you empty out your savings and spend it all on one thing - and we're not talking about the holidays. The new iPhone 8 (or whatever Apple decides to call it) is officially going to be announced on Sept. 12. Apple sent out invites on Aug. 31 and is also set to release the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, a new Apple Watch with LTE, and a 4K Apple TV.

According to various reports, the new iPhone 8 will cost about $1,000 and include the following features: a larger screen, no home button, wireless charging, and facial recognition. The new iPhone 8 might also come in a copper-blush finish instead of rose-gold. You can expect all new iPhones to come with iOS 11, new emoji, and other handy features.

Despite releasing the Apple Watch Series 2 last year, the company is going to announce yet another new Apple Watch model that has LTE capabilities. This means you finally won't need to carry your iPhone around for the Apple Watch to receive notifications and more.

But these are all rumors, and Apple could very much surprise us in the end and do none of these things or all of them. For now, you'll have to stay tuned on Sept. 12 and watch the livestream to see what exactly the company unveils.

All the Ladies Who Have Been Romanced by Brad Pitt

Before Brad Pitt's divorce from Angelina Jolie, the father of six seemed to have left his past as one of Hollywood's hottest bachelors behind him. Throughout the late '80s and '90s, Brad pretty much changed his girlfriend as often as he changed his famous hair and was linked to nearly all of his famous costars. Whether or not Brad actually had a serious relationship with these leading ladies is something only he could tell you, but regardless, take a look inside the actor's little black book to see who has been lucky enough to have (supposedly) fallen under his spell.

Giphy's New Feature Shows You Exactly How Popular a GIF Really Is

It's impossible to deny that Giphy has become an essential part of the internet. The GIF search engine takes the Google Image search model one step further, allowing anyone with a keyboard and a feeling to find the perfect graphical depiction of their mental state and share it with the world. It's also the only way to share those reaction GIFs on Twitter - the built-in GIF function is run out of the Giphy platform - so it's something that's heavily connected into the world of trending content and viral images. So it makes total sense that on Aug. 28, the company the company announced that it was taking GIFs one step further and adding view counts to every image an official Giphy partner or artist posts.

But what does that mean, exactly? According to Giphy, the addition of these numbers will enable users to find the most viral images on the site in a clear, unified way. "It tells us which GIFs are the most popular memes today or what was the most epic moment from last week's Game of Thrones. It shows how strong the force is in the old chapters and the new," the company wrote in a Medium post, adding cheekily that "view counts show how often we like to be a bit roguish, as well!" In other words, it'll be easier than ever to find exactly what you're looking for at a given time - and to see if other people are feeling the same way you are, right then and there.

From a more practical perspective, Giphy explained via an emailed press release that "a GIF view count is a metric to measure popularity, relevancy, and reach," a set of tools which will enable partners to measure how well their GIF has done in the same way they would measure a video or article. Ultimately, the decision to add a view counter to these images is just the latest step in a move toward making GIFs a more mainstream type of content - and we couldn't be happier about it.

Why You Shouldn't Trust Ivy on American Horror Story: Cult

What do you know, we only lasted through one episode of American Horror Story: Cult before the internet began exploding with crazy theories. In the wake of the premiere, we're already asking ourselves if the clowns are even real, what the deal is with the very Manson-adjacent Winter, and what's behind that mysterious door in Kai's apartment. If you ask me, though, I don't even think you have to reach that far to find evil. After all, the the scary new season is all about paranoia, disillusion, and mistrust. That's why I'm taking aim at the Mayfair-Richards household.

I think Ivy is already a member of Kai's cult, possibly since before the election. The first tip-off is that she seems to be diminishing Ally's fears and experiences from the very start. She's quick to say Ally is imagining things. And when they're alone in their empty restaurant, it's almost easy to see how she may have played a part in pulling it off. She's also quick to tell Ally that she doesn't know how much longer she can deal with all of her nonsense. After, what, like one month? Some marriage, am I right?

One other perplexing plot point is that the cult seems to know about Ally's deep fears. But if they had someone on the inside, someone close to her, it would be easy to know how to push her buttons. It's possible Ivy is behind the whole situation with clowns terrifying Ally. I mean, one of the clowns even has tiny holes all over it! How could they know about Ally's trypophobia unless they were clued in?

Isn't it strange that Ivy is never around when Ally is experiencing all this trauma? Isn't it bizarre that one of the cult members, Winter, just so happens to snag the nanny gig that Ally posts a listing for online? Perhaps the most logical conclusion is that none of it is by accident. It's all been orchestrated from the inside.

Then we have the final nail in the coffin: the season preview. Not only do we see Ivy slapping her wife across the face and driving a wedge even further into their marriage, but there's one especially bloody scene we only see for a split second. Ivy and Winter are presumably in The Butchery on Main together (based on the hanging meat carcasses behind them). They're cutting up something using a piece of machinery. Ivy looks absolutely invigorated by whatever she's doing, while Winter looks on with a smug grin.

Considering this would be a pretty unsanitary way to prepare edible meat, we can safely assume this isn't step one in an elaborate steak dinner. Given the amount of blood and the looks on the characters' faces, this is the scene after a pretty satisfying murder. Perhaps The Butchery is just the best way to get rid of the body. And if Winter and Ivy are hanging out beyond the confines of Winter's nanny gig, and if they're getting into some dark sh*t together, you can see how Ivy isn't the person we think she is at all.

13 Things Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Have Said About Their Shocking Split

Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt after 11 years of being together back in September 2016. While Brad released a statement to People almost immediately after the news broke, Angelina had her attorney, Robert Offer, release one on her behalf. The two are currently focusing on their children, Maddox, Pax, Shiloh, Zahara, and twins Vivienne and Knox, and Brad is even going to therapy. It's still unclear what lead to their split, but here is everything Angelina and Brad have said about their divorce.

Take a Tour of Flip or Flop Star Tarek El Moussa's Bachelor Pad

Tarek and Christina El Moussa have been separated for more than a year now, and during that time, Tarek has used his finely honed real estate skills to design his own abode. The Flip or Flop star invited E! News inside his Newport Beach area bachelor pad. With its whitewashed walls and high ceilings, the airy open-concept home exudes welcoming seaside vibes. And, Tarek says, is the perfect maze for his two young kids to play in.

Wide plank wood floors run throughout, and farmhouse touches add cozy warmth in the form of crossed wood planks, stair banisters, and molding on the kitchen island. Upstairs, 6-year-old daughter Taylor's room boasts not one but two bunk beds - although Tarek says she usually ends up in bed with daddy. Next door is 1-year-old son Brayden's gray-and-white-themed nursery, complete with a plush glider in which Tarek rocks him to sleep at night.

The master bedroom boasts vaulted ceilings with exposed beams. A flat-screen TV is mounted above a fireplace, and a rustic chandelier hangs above the contemporary canopy bed. And did we mention the views? You can see the water from the upper deck in the charming abode, and we're guessing he keeps his boat - which, he jokes, he just renamed from "Flip or Flop" to "Bad Decisions" - in the nearby marina.

Perhaps the most surprising and heart-warming part of the house tour, however, is when Tarek reveals that he and Christina still check in on each other and "still deep down care about each other." Check out every inch of Tarek's stylish home in the video above.

OK, We Need to See This Cut Scene From the Game of Thrones Finale Stat

The following contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season seven.

It's been a while since the season finale of Game of Thrones, but fans are still reeling from all of the huge moments that occurred during the season. One particular twist that had everyone shook was the trial and execution of Petyr the Creeper Baelish. True, a majority of the audience was all too happy that Littlefinger had finally died; he had made it through seven seasons without ever paying for his part in effectively starting the War of the Five Kings and he finally gets his comeuppance at the hands of the remaining Starks. Poetic justice.

That's all well and good, but it still raised questions. When did the Starks come together to plan his takedown? Was it all a scheme to lure Baelish into a false sense of security? WHAT IS THE TRUTH?! We got a little insight into the dirty truth when Isaac Hempstead-Wright, who plays Three-Eyed Raven Bran Stark, told Variety that there was a scene cut in which Sansa turns to Bran before she ends up betraying Baelish:

"We actually did a scene that clearly got cut, a short scene with Sansa where she knocks on Bran's door and says, 'I need your help,' or something along those lines. So basically, as far as I know, the story was that it suddenly occurred to Sansa that she had a huge CCTV department at her discretion and it might be a good idea to check with him first before she guts her own sister. So she goes to Bran, and Bran tells her everything she needs to know, and she's like, 'Oh, s-.'"

On one hand, it's nice to have that tidbit because it helps set the scene before we arrive in the great hall for the execution. On the other hand, what the hell?! This only opens up a plethora of other questions, as well as shines a terrible light on the characters involved. It's possible that Hempstead-Wright misunderstood the scene's intention, since scenes are rarely shot in order and he even says, "As far as I know." The deleted scene could have occurred earlier in the season rather right before the execution, or it could have been that the theory of Sansa and Arya working together was correct and her going to Bran was for the final nail in the coffin rather than her needing clarification. But if that isn't the case, then everything leading up to the surprise trial was real. And though some people may feel like this scene ties up the story in a neat bow, consider these points that show the opposite.

  • Everyone was very obvious about not trusting Littlefinger. Sansa especially told her siblings that Littlefinger was never to be trusted and discussed how she knows exactly what he's after with Brienne. If everyone knows not to trust Littlefinger, why are they letting him give them the run-around? Why does Sansa suddenly need his counsel, especially when it comes to matters of her family? She genuinely seems to be taking his advice into consideration, which is baffling since she knows he's manipulative to a fault. Arya falls clumsily into his trap with no questions about the legitimacy of the situation. Yes, he's very sly and quick-witted, but that doesn't mean anything when you know he's a weasel.
  • The Stark sisters are way out of character. OK, yes, the sisters were never particularly close and hadn't seen one another since their father's execution in season one, so it's no shock that they rub each other the wrong way. In fact, that first conversation the two have after the Northern lords complain about Jon and tell Sansa they should have given her the crown makes sense. Arya would have seen that as power move on Sansa's part rather than a placating one. But their actions after that interaction are far from reasonable - they're unbelievable. First, we're to believe that Arya, who's been taught how to be this badass stealthy assassin and just wiped out the Frey house with her skills, got so easily duped by Littlefinger? He didn't even put that much effort into it; he just hid in the shadows and she stumbled onto the note like he planned. Really, Arya?!
  • What was the point of the game of lies? Some think this is where Arya "tests" Sansa and subtly tells her that she can trust her by handing her the dagger. But there's no sign that this is true. Arya plays the game of lies, but Sansa never calls her out because she doesn't know what the hell is going on. As far as she knows, her sister is being a complete psycho, first threatening to out her to the Northern houses and now basically telling her she could kill her for her face at any moment. Some might assume that because Arya hands Sansa the dagger at the end, this is her signaling that she trusts her and means no harm. But it could also just be Arya telling Sansa she isn't afraid of her and that she's no challenge for her, even with the blade. After all, she just got through telling her how she could take her down.
  • Why didn't anyone ask Bran for help in the first place?!? Seriously, he's like having the cheat codes before you even need to start the game. It seems ridiculous that either sister didn't think to speak with their brother before their argument escalated so quickly.

Personally, I like thinking that the sisters were a little smarter than that. We didn't come this far into the game for our favorite characters' development to slide into obscurity and have us question their every move. Whatever happens in season eight, here's hoping it shows the true strength of the Stark siblings and the sisterhood we've been waiting for since season one.

The Best Way to Scramble Eggs, According to Anthony Bourdain

When it comes to the best way to scramble eggs, chefs tend to disagree. And one chef who embraces an entirely back-to-basics, no-frills approach is Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain describes his perfect scrambled egg in a video and makes it clear there's one thing you should never add to to the equation: dairy. "I just don't feel that milk or cream adds anything. I believe that a scrambled egg is principally about the egg," the chef says in the video. "You're not making a quiche here," he says. In his Appetites cookbook, which is filled with recipes that Bourdain thinks everyone should know how to cook, he describes his go-to method of scrambling eggs. Ready for it?

Start with fresh eggs, and get a hot - but not too hot - pan going. Crack the eggs on a flat surface before dropping them into a bowl to prevent any shells from sneaking in. Beat them with a fork, but don't overbeat them; you want to have a ripple of white and yellow instead of an entirely yellow mixture. Drop plenty of whole butter into the hot pan until it's foaming, followed by the beaten eggs. Allow the eggs to form a little bit before beginning to gently move them around in a "figure-eight pattern," as Anthony describes. The final product should be fluffy, airy, and rippled.

So there you have it. Unlike Alton Brown, who scrambles his eggs with whole milk, or Chrissy Teigen, who makes "cheesy" cheeseless scrambled eggs with heavy cream, or Paula Deen, who claims adding water lightens them up, Anthony Bourdain omits any of these additions for a basic, buttery egg.

Why Your Favorite Game of Thrones Character Might Become a White Walker

Are you ready for your day to be ruined? If so, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is happy to help. During an interview with Esquire, the Game of Thrones star was happy to discuss everything from the riveting conclusion to season seven to his predictions for season eight. While on the latter subject, Coster-Waldau posited a theory that we aren't emotionally ready to consider quite yet, but we are now forcing ourselves to anyway: a main character (or possibly main characters) will be turned into a wight in season eight.

Now, there are a few characters we wouldn't be that sad to part with given their history of being huge assh*les. (Can you imagine wight-Euron stumbling around in all that leather?) Even so, the mere prospect of seeing some of the fantasy drama's big hitters die in such a way is disheartening, to say the least. If anyone suffers from that fate, though, it will likely be the characters fighting the Night King and his undead army on the North's frontlines. And who do we see heading that way in the finale? Jaime Lannister.

"The fear is that I would be turned into one of those undead. That would suck," Coster-Waldau admitted while discussing Jaime's choice to ditch Cersei and King's Landing. "You know some of the main characters are going to get turned. There are going to be some blue-eyed main characters running around. And, god, I hope it's not me. That's three hours of makeup in the morning. I know that if David Benioff and Dan Weiss read this, they'll go, 'Oh, yes, we will.'"

To be honest, that seems like an inevitability for at least one character on the show at this point now that the Wall is officially down and the White Walkers are marching south. Then again, this is a man who doesn't even recognize his own butt, so take his word with a grain of salt. And hey, we have quite some time until anything happens anyway (which is a tragedy in and of itself, but let's not talk about that).

Low-Carb Diets Actually Work (and Are Good For You), Study Says

In the ongoing debate on whether fat is the enemy of waistlines and healthy hearts, an in-depth study may have the answer: if you want to lose weight and be healthier, opt for a low-carb diet over a low-fat one.

This 2014 study, funded by the National Institutes of Health in the Annals of Internal Medicine, followed 148 adults for a year; some were on a low-fat diet (less than 30 percent total fat, including less than seven percent saturated fat in their diets) and some were on a low-carb diet (less than 40 grams of carbohydrates per day - about the same amount of carbs in just one slice of bread!). Low-carb dieters ate high-protein foods like eggs for breakfast, tuna salad for lunch, and red meat, chicken, fish, pork, or tofu for dinner, along with vegetables. The low-fat group ate more grains and starches, along with vegetables as well.

At the end of the study, the low-carb dieters had lost more weight, including fat, than the low-fat group (about eight pounds more, on average). And even though the low-fat group did lose weight as well, they had lost more muscle mass than fat. Even more surprising: although the low-carb group ate twice the recommended daily amount of saturated fat as set by US guidelines - and increased their total fat intake to over 40 percent - they still had higher levels of HDL (the "good" cholesterol) and lower risk of heart disease than those who restricted their fat intake. This is an important finding, since higher cholesterol levels and a greater risk of heart disease have always been a major criticism of low-carb diets like Atkins or Dukan. "It's impactful," says registered dietitian Julie Upton about the study, although she notes that sticking to a low-carb diet for as long as the participants did can be hard for many. "Most people find very restricted low-carb diets hard to follow and they fall off the wagon," she says.

That sticking to a lifestyle that shuns bread baskets and pasta dinners as actually good for you isn't the best news to hear, but this new study does add more evidence that saturated fat may not be the diet evil that it's been labeled as in the past. In fact, a recent review published in the same journal also confirmed that there's no link between saturated fat and a higher risk of heart disease. The takeaway? Whether it's olive oil, avocado, or a healthy cheese habit, the fat in your diet may be doing your body more good than those refined carbs.

Millennial Pink Doughnuts Are Pretty, but It's the Ingredients That Have Us Shook

Millennial pink has been inundating our lives and our Instagram feeds for what feels like forever, but this may be the aesthetically pleasing trend to end them all: millennial pink doughnuts. Well, the official name is beetroot lemon-thyme doughnuts, but us millennials keep it real. Insider Food initially spotted the dessert from Crosstown Doughnuts in London, which describes the pretty menu item as "a soft, fluffy, pink beetroot sourdough with a lemon-thyme glaze, topped with a home made vanilla crumble and fresh lemon-thyme."

Yep, you read that correctly. Not only are the doughnuts adorable as can be, but they're kind of frickin' healthy, making them the most *millennial* millennial pink sweet imaginable. The bakery doesn't dye its dough with food coloring but dyes its specialty homemade sourdough with beetroot, creating that bright pink color that is 100 percent natural and Instagram-approved. From the looks of the following video showing how they're made, the doughnuts turn a little bit lighter when fried, giving them that millennial pink glow. Read on to see how the treat is made, and prepare to drool over the doughnuts.

What Really Happened When I Rented Out My Apartment on Airbnb

Make money while you're on vacation? Sounds too good to be true, but it is possible for many, thanks to websites like Airbnb that allow you to rent out your empty home while you travel.

I decided to take the plunge into the sharing economy during my recent two-week European vacation. While my husband and I were traveling in Rome, Sicily, and Paris, three different groups of travelers slept in our San Francisco home. A family of four from the UK made a three-day stop during their California road trip. A trio of start-up workers in town from New Zealand stayed for a week. And a woman from Sweden, on vacation to celebrate her 50th birthday, enjoyed our home with her husband and three children. Here are four reasons I'm happy I put my trust in perfect strangers - and they're not just financial.

I Learned My Local Housing Laws

As a stickler for the rules, I decided to register for a short-term rental permit, something a minority of San Francisco Airbnb hosts do. While my rental situation was legal under San Francisco's housing laws, getting the permit was not easy. I had to register for a business license, make a trip to a city planning office and the DMV during work hours, and fill out complicated paperwork. But the process helped me understand the brewing debate in San Francisco over housing and vacation rental regulation, and I now feel better informed to vote and weigh in on the issue. It also encouraged me to email my local elected supervisor with some suggestions to make the process easier, and he even got back to me and made some changes on the city's website. While I wish it wasn't such a headache, I at least got a sense of civic engagement out of it. Some advice: give yourself a few weeks to complete the process.

I Cleaned the Sh*t Out of My House

I was already familiar with the benefits of the KonMari method and have an aversion to clutter. But knowing that strangers were about to enter my home (and then review it online) made me look at my home with fresh eyes. My husband and I reorganized our kitchen to make sure everything had a logical place.

If you're worried your home could get damaged or degraded, know that it had the opposite effect on my place.
We cleaned off surfaces, emptied our nightstands, scanned paperwork to the Cloud so we could shred the physical copies, and removed personal items from our living spaces. We finally installed new curtains in our bedroom and replaced a broken lamp. We emptied our dressers to make room for our guests' belongings, limiting ourselves to one owners' closet worth of clothes. We took multiple trips to Goodwill, not believing all this "stuff" was once in our house.

If you're worried your home could get damaged or degraded if you rent it out on Airbnb, know that it had the opposite effect on my place. All this cleaning and organizing made me feel like our apartment got a major upgrade.

It Made Me Trust People

Sometimes the news can make us feel like the world is falling apart. Welcoming strangers into my home reminded me that most people are inherently good. Our guests were easy to communicate with, respectful of our home, and even left us treats, including a handwritten letter signed by the kids and chocolate from New Zealand.

It Helped Pay For Our Vacation

Traveling is a luxury. Our trip became much more affordable thanks to the money made from our apartment, which would have otherwise sat empty. Airbnb makes the payment process easy, and we got the money directly deposited into our account each time a new guest checked in.

Things to Keep in Mind

While there were a lot of hours spent preparing our apartment for Airbnb, the effort felt worth it. If it sounds like a promising idea to you, here are some more tips to consider before renting your place:

  • Learn your local laws and insurance rules. Airbnb lists responsible hosting guidelines and city regulations online.
  • Find a cleaning professional you can trust. We made a checklist for our cleaning woman and walked her through the schedule and the plan for sheets and towels, since we needed her to turn over the apartment while we were gone. There are also services that will do this for you, like Pillow.
  • Consider keypad locks. We changed our keys to industrial keypad locks so we just had to give our guests codes to enter our place.
  • Prepare your check-in and check-out messages ahead of time. I wrote them in a Google Doc and downloaded the Google Docs and Airbnb apps to my iPhone. Then before each person was set to check in or out, I would copy/paste the message from Google Docs into the Airbnb message and send away. It took 30 seconds.
  • Create an apartment guide. Explain how to use your dishwasher, laundry, or other appliances, and make note of fun things to do in the area. I wrote ours in a Google Doc and sent it ahead of time to each guest and also left a printed copy in the house.
  • Set up an owners' closet. We consolidated our private belongings to one closet and locked it. It gave us peace of mind.

I know I will turn to Airbnb next time I plan a vacation. The opportunity to afford new experiences is worth putting my trust in fellow travelers.
