In a State Plagued by Suicide, 1 Researcher Is Taking a Revolutionary Approach

Michael Staley wants to find out why people die by suicide. His job and title reflect this unique quest: he's the psychological autopsy examiner for Utah, working in the state's Office of the Medical Examiner. The role was created to analyze the state's suicide problem by connecting the scientific data with the human - and Staley is the only person in America with such a job. He's embarking on a years-long, first-of-its-kind project to study suicide in the state and how it impacts marginalized communities like LGBTQ+ youth and Native Americans.

He does this through "psychological autopsies," conducting hours-long interviews with the deceased's family and friends, exploring and excavating the lives of suicide victims, to understand their problems and the circumstances that troubled them. He does this in the hopes of connecting suicide with lived lives - specifically connecting this to Utah's unique suicide troubles: the state has the fifth highest suicide rate in the country; suicide is the leading cause of death for kids ages 10 to 17, and Utah has the highest ratio of suicides to homicides.

A sociologist, Staley specializes in prevention. As a cisgender man who is gay, he knows all too well that queer persons are at a greater risk for suicidal ideation and other mental health issues. It's a constant source of friction, regardless of whether he is directly or distantly addressing the subject, as there are more questions about queer suicide than answers. His work can be morbid, a side effect of the subject that his personal life helps mitigate (Staley says his partner is "the bumper guard" to his daily tragedies), but in many ways, his dedication to the subject is the culmination of a life exploring the problem of premature deaths and why they happen.

"I devote the vast majority of my time to people who actually die by suicide," Staley explains to POPSUGAR. "And we don't know that queer people account for more of those deaths than the actual population." Staley provides two reasons for this nebulousness: there are no recordings of how many LGBTQ+ Americans die by suicide, and there are no set numbers on the queer populations, as they have routinely been left out of research like the US Census. There simply aren't accurate population counts for the community. "In general, in science we're not good at counting either of those things," he says. "We're working on it."

Staley can pinpoint where this interest began: during his teen years in rural Montana, where he attended a high school with only 320 students. In his four-year tenure, seven students died, some by suicide and some by other circumstances.

"I remember going to school and sitting there and the intercom going off, saying, 'So-and-so died,'" Staley recalls. "It kept happening over and over. One day the Spanish teacher completely fell apart, telling us, 'Would you please stop dying?' That's the most explanation that I got from anyone."

Staley's interest grew after taking a sociology class during his undergraduate studies at Carroll College in Montana. Suicide was a major focus in his sociological studies since the subject is considered the bedrock of the social sciences. "We were talking about the empirical, scientific understanding of suicide," Staley says. The draw of personalizing the science of people - and his professor's highlighting how to recognize suicidal behaviors in a person - captured him, illustrating how the discipline could create real change and possibly save lives.

After graduating with a degree in sociology, Staley pursued a PhD at the University of New Hampshire, where he studied the sociology of AIDS and infectious diseases. He eventually moved to Utah in 2014 to understand "safer sex practices - or the lack thereof" in the state's LGBTQ+ Latter Day Saint community, but he ended up being redirected to suicide. "What I ended up doing a lot of the time was dealing with mental health crises," he says. "I had to take two different people to the hospital - because they were suicidal - after they told me that they had plans."

"I remember going to school and sitting there and the intercom going off, saying, 'So-and-so died. It kept happening over and over."

Staley found - from firsthand and personal experience - that one of the sources of the problem is the tension between being queer and being Mormon, of living conservatively and living your truth.

"I was working with gay, bisexual, queer, and questioning young men," Staley says of his early Utah work, specifying that these were the persons who came to support groups he attended. "Young men have a harder time coping with their sexuality and the expectations of their communities. There's a religious conservatism here. You can't be LGBTQ and hold the highest calling in the church. Therefore, there's no way to move forward. There's this role conflict."

Suicide, in Staley's mind, is much more complicated than one environmental factor or one mental health issue. What he does know is that Utah has a unique problem, which is exactly why the state created the role he now fills; while there is no proof that these suicides are taking place among predominately queer or Mormon people (Staley, again, notes there isn't enough research or population counts to support this), this is an all too common misconception in the state.

"Look at the comments in the Salt Lake Tribune articles, particularly the ones where we talk about teenagers," he says. "They all quickly devolve into this really polar argument that it's all gay Mormons who are killing themselves. That, I think, is toxic."

Staley sees this opinion as dangerously myopic and a disservice to suicide prevention, as it oversimplifies an issue that lies at the intersection of many personal problems, and, again, highlights the research gap dedicated to LGBTQ+ populations in America.

"There's just so much contour to suicide," he says. "When we label the problem as a 'gay Mormon problem,' we will miss so many deaths. The deaths that come across my desk every day are not all LGBT people and are not all LGBT Mormons. Some of them are, but we're not yet at a place where we're systematically collecting data about either religion or sexual orientation and gender identity. Nobody is, in the country. We can't definitively say those things."

If there's anything that Staley's work points to, it's the resounding chorus minority communities have championed for years: everything is intersectional - even suicide. There isn't one or two smoking guns, no single Goliath to strike down, to rid communities of suicidal risk. If he had to point in directions of main culprits, he'd put his efforts on equipping men with emotional dexterity in addition to loosening the bonds of religion.

"Young men are miserable," he explains. "We do not teach our young men to emote in healthy ways. We teach them how to emote in extremely unhealthy ways: to be a man and suck it up. That's the worst emotional-intelligence building."

For religion, specifically Mormonism, the problem can be examined by contrasting the suicide rates in Utah vs. conservative Christian states in the South. "The suicide rates in those places are not astronomically through the roof like it is in Utah," he says. "Why would you have one high suicide [rate] in one place but not the other? I think that's because . . . there's something to the culture here in Utah that creates expectations, and we don't know what that is."

As pervasive as it is, suicide is still a subject that is so incredibly nuanced and abstract. But Staley is optimistic and knows that better suicide prevention will be developed by closely studying the issue, by using personal stories to build scientific solutions that can cater to specific communities, specific problems, and their resulting overlaps.

"My expertise is in research and is getting data out of people who are hurting," he says. "Let's address the pipeline between feeling hopeless and being suicidal. If we can do that . . . I genuinely believe we can re-engineer the way that we do prevention so that we're spending millions to save hundreds of lives. And that's where we need to be."

Fitbit's Latest Smartwatch Impresses on All Fronts, but Its Look and Price Are What Will Sell You

If the Fitbit Ionic impressed you, just wait until you see the company's latest product. On April 16, 2018, Fitbit released its highly anticipated smartwatch, the Fitbit Versa. Advertised with a completely new, elevated look along with four-plus days of battery life, the newest addition to the Fitbit family is sure to please. So, as soon as I was able to get my hands on one, I immediately put the Versa to the test. My first impression: Fitbit finally nailed it with this one.

From an aesthetics standpoint, I was fully impressed by the Versa's softer clock face and its light weight. Fun fact: the Fitbit Versa is the lightest metal smartwatch in the US. Its similar look to the Apple Watch also makes it competitive on the design front. Opting for a square face with rounded edges (compared to the Ionic's more angular design) was completely intentional and designed with the female consumer in mind, according to Fitbit senior product marketing manager Kat Binder. She shared that considering 60 percent of smartwatch buyers are men, Fitbit wanted to tap into the female market this time around. In addition to releasing a black-on-black aluminum and gray-silver aluminum watch, Fitbit also offers a gorgeous rose gold one that will definitely sway skeptics.

Here are some key features of the Versa, many of which we've already known and loved on previous devices:

  1. Battery life: There's no need to charge your smartwatch every night because you can enjoy the Versa for a minimum of four days straight. This also means you can wear it while you sleep (and comfortably, might I add), which leads me to . . .
  2. Onscreen workouts: With the Versa, you have your own personal trainer right on your wrist. Three on-device workouts are included with your device (10-Minute Abs, Seven-Minute Workout, and Warm It Up), while a paid subscription gives you access to multiple trainers, additional workouts, and Fitbit Radio. Your Fitbit Coach will walk you through each move and continue to improve with feedback.
  3. Auto sleep tracking: Your Versa gives you a deeper look into your bedtime habits by telling you how long you were in light, deep, or REM sleep. See your nightly sleep insights on the Fitbit app, which also explains the importance of each cycle. I learned that I wake up much more often than I should each night, which has encouraged me to switch up my bedtime routine.
  4. Auto activity tracking: Thanks to the Versa's SmartTrack technology, you don't have to hit "start" in order for your workout to count. Your watch will automatically detect what kind of exercise you're doing without having to log activity yourself.
  5. Integrated dashboard: The on-device dashboard was redesigned to allow for easy access to your health and fitness data right on your wrist. Now, you can glance at your seven-day exercise summaries, current and resting heart rate, daily stats, and more - all without having to go on the mobile app to find it.
  6. Connected GPS: Your Fitbit Versa automatically tracks your running and biking pace, distance, and speed using your smartphone's GPS if it's nearby. This is the one downfall to the Versa as the Ionic features built-in GPS.
  7. 24/7 heart rate tracking: Similar to the Fitbit Ionic, the Versa uses PurePulse technology to provide you with your current and resting heart rate. The new integrated dashboard also allows you to see your seven-day resting heart rate trends on your wrist.
  8. Water resistance: Feel free to take a bath with your Versa on or jump into the ocean (up to 50 meters) or pool - it's totally safe.
  9. Phone-free music: You can store up to 300 of your favorite songs directly onto your smartwatch or stream music through Pandora or Deezer. The best part? It's compatible with Bluetooth devices, so you can hook up your wireless headphones without having to carry your phone on a run!

In addition to text/call notification and calendar alerts, you can take personalization to the next level with the various apps (hello, Strava!), the clock faces available, and numerous accessory bands, from stainless steel to leather. And if you're not yet convinced that the Versa is for you, let me just share the price point real quick. The Fitbit Versa starts at $200 (for the black, silver, and rose gold) and goes up to $230 for the special-edition smartwatches, which come in an exclusive charcoal woven and lavender woven band and feature Fitbit (wallet-free) Pay. In comparison to the Apple Watch Series 3 (starting at $329) and the Fitbit Ionic (starting at $300), the cost of the Versa is undeniably competitive.

As if all that weren't enough, coming this Spring are female health tracking and message quick replies for Android users. Ladies, soon we'll be able to get predicted ovulation dates, predicted period dates, menstrual reminders, cycle tracking, and other personal insights. But wait for it . . . you won't even need a Fitbit device to access this data as long as you have the Fitbit mobile app downloaded. As for you Android users, you'll soon be able to reply to texts on your wrist with quick preselected responses or with your own customized replies. Fitbit informed us that they're currently working on a solution for iPhone users.

Overall, the key difference between the Fitbit Versa and the Ionic comes down to looks and cost. The two devices are nearly identical in features, aside from the Ionic's built-in GPS. The Fibit Versa is an affordable option for fitness enthusiasts who want a smartwatch that's more fashion forward. If you don't mind bringing your phone along with you for its GPS, I'd say that the Versa is the way to go. Come on, you can't beat a $200 smartwatch.

The 15 Best Independent Bookstores in the US

When it's time to hit the road for a vacation, there are two things that bookworms know to be true. First of all, you can never pack too many books in your suitcase and carry-on (although those overweight luggage fees are definitely not on our side). The other is that, no matter where we go, it would be straight-up sacrilege to not visit any and all renowned independent bookstores in the vicinity.

With no disrespect to chain bookstores, there's nothing quite as magical as an independent bookstore. Each has its own unique atmosphere, decor, selection, and claim to fame, but they all have one thing in common - when a bookworm steps inside, we immediately know that we could spend an entire day there.

Despite the rise of e-readers, there's no shortage of incredible independent bookstores in America. In fact, some of us (*raises hand*) have even planned trips just so we can visit certain indies. Luckily, many of them are located in popular tourist destinations like New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. So before you head out on your next trip, check out this list of the 15 best independent bookstores in the country.

How to Know You've Truly Found Your Soulmate - and Should Hold on Tight

When it comes to connecting with someone and finding your perfect soulmate, it seems like a dream come true. The concept of having that special person who's your counterpart would make this whole dating "thing" a whole lot easier. Yet it can be tough to determine whether the idea of a soulmate is factual or not. Is there a way to really know you've met "the one," and what might happen if you let him or her go? Luckily, we've got a few answers for you.

Do Soulmates Really Exist?

In a way, they do. You've just got to believe in the magical. "A soulmate is someone you connect with in a way that is deeper than you thought possible. You connect with him [or her] in a way that is romantic, but also strongly emotional. And this connection is far deeper than any connection you've had with anyone else," David Bennett, a relationship counselor and owner of Double Trust Dating and Relationships, told POPSUGAR.

How to Know You've Found Yours

"A soulmate treats you with kindness and generosity and brings out the best in you (and you in him or her). A soulmate is more than just a person who shares a certain percentage of things in common with you. In fact, a soulmate may not even have a lot in common with you, but you nonetheless are right for each other," he said.

It's an unspoken, unexplainable bond that holds the two of you together where you're happy and the best versions of yourselves. You know that it just feels right to be together.

What's more, a soulmate's love is unconditional. "A soulmate will treat you with kindness even when you may not deserve it, but [they'll] also assertively tell you what you need to hear if necessary. As I mentioned, soulmates bring out the best in each other, and do so with kindness, empathy, and honesty," he said. Plus, your underlying values mesh well together and there is a level of acceptance, added Kimberly Hershenson, LMSW.

"You've faced hardship together - whether it's the loss of a loved one, a job, or just setbacks - and have come out stronger together, [and] you challenge each other - you make each other think and can push each other while still being supportive," she said. You can also accept each others' quirks, where you feel comfortable with your partner and can be yourself.

Finding your soulmate is deeper than making a checklist of traits you like in someone and seeing if someone meets it. It's hard to define, but you know it when you see and feel it. "I'm not sure if I totally believe in the concept, simply because they are so rare and the term is clouded by 'in love' brain chemistry. But if you find someone you totally feel could be your soulmate, don't blow it by overthinking or pushing them away, because the evidence suggests a long-term relationship with a great person that lasts forever is extremely rare," he said.

Can You Be Wrong?

Sometimes you may think someone is a soulmate, and he or she turns out not to be. "It's also possible to find your soulmate and push him or her away because of your own personal issues. And sometimes your soulmate may let you go, because they may know that walking away could be the best thing for you in the end," said Bennett.

"If you believe you've found your soulmate, then you really should work hard to figure out why the relationship isn't working and then make changes if necessary," he said. It's worth holding onto if you both feel that you're meant to be.

For this to work, you both must feel that the other is his or her soulmate. "I would have a hard time being in a relationship where I believe my partner is my soulmate, but she doesn't believe it back. The concept of 'soulmate' requires a 'mate,' which by definition implies part of a pair. If your partner is hesitant to use the word 'soulmate,' that is one thing, but if you believe [they are] the one for you eternally, and to [them] you're just another person to date, I'd have serious questions," said Bennett. However, keep in mind some people don't like the word soulmate but still may see their partners in that way.

Is It Common?

"Based on the research related to divorce, cheating, and the reality of relationship satisfaction often diminishing over time, finding a soulmate seems pretty rare," he said. What's more, it might come up too early in the relationship to make it valid.

"From a purely scientific standpoint, the 'soulmates' concept is usually brought up early in a relationship, when the infatuated brain is filled with dopamine and other 'feel-good' chemicals that create euphoric feelings for each other (sorry to be a downer). As these chemicals fade, often so does the 'soulmate' label," he explained.

THIS Is When to Break Up With an Acne Product - For Good

Does Taylor Swift's Red Hair in "Babe" Have a Hidden Meaning?

What do you get when you put Taylor Swift in a Mad Men-inspired music video? Taylor Swift with red hair. That's right, the singer ditched her signature blond ends for an auburn wig in her new "Babe" music video, and she totally pulled it off.

Naturally, fans are freaking out at her switched-up look and many think that, in true Swift fashion, there might be a deeper meaning to the retro hairstyle. See, it turns out "Babe" was originally written for her fourth studio album, Red, but it didn't make the cut. Fans are certain that Swift's crimson wig is a nod to that era.

"What if Taylor has red hair because this song was originally meant to be on the 'Red' album?" one eager fan questioned. "Taylor having red hair is one more link between the reputation and red era! And she looks sooo gorgeous omg!" another exclaimed.

Will there be more sneaky beauty references to Red? We'll all have to wait and see when the full music video drops on June 9. In the meantime, see what theories Swifties are cookin' up ahead.

I Lasered Off My Hormonal Acne and Scars - and It Didn't Hurt One Bit

I'm 16, and until recently had no acne. It seemed to good to be true. Even as I faced a myriad of stressful school work and boy drama, I was surprised that no pesky pimples had popped up . . . until they did.

As a beauty influencer, I am constantly polishing my skin with the latest products. Since I take care of my skin religiously, I thought maybe I could avoid the inevitable plague of teenage hormonal acne. Little did I know, slathering on my favorite face mask on wasn't the answer to eliminating the sudden scads of pimples that began to invade my once perfectly dewy T-zone.

Hormonal acne is different than the average minor breakout. It was a new beast that I'd never tackled, and I needed help. That help came in the form of dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman, whose clients include Sofía Vergara and Christina Ricci.

The Answer

Dr. Dendy's answer was Pulse Dye Laser (PDL), a method where the dermatologist uses a high-powered, handheld flash gun (like the one shown above) to deliver an intense wavelength of light to kill bacteria. This method also treats red lesions and triggers collagen production, which makes it ideal for people who are trying to get rid of pitted scars. It's also a great choice for boys suffering from hormonal acne, because unlike girls, we can't try quelling the outbreaks with birth control pills.

Dr. Dendy refers to PDL as life-friendly, as you can do everything normally, like go out to dinner afterward, resume your skincare routine, and still wear makeup.

How It Works

"Pulse Dye Laser is used to treat vascular lesions or areas of skin that are red," said Dr. Dendy. "The target there is hemoglobin, which is the oxygen-carrying component of blood. This helps to heat things up and injure the endothelium, which is the lining of the vessel. That subsequently clears the redness from the skin."

In real-people words, that means the laser injures parts of the dermal layer of your skin so it can repair itself quicker and leave an even skin tone. The PDL procedure essentially speeds up acne in all aspects, as it helps improve the appearance of post-breakout skin and can help treat active acne.

Is It Just For Acne?

Dr. Dendy recently treated a young boy who had a "spider angioma", which looks like a broken blood vessel, and eliminated that life-long mark with one zap of the PDL machine. Similarly, this can be done to acne marks and hormonal acne in two to four procedures.

Along with wanting to eliminate my acne bumps, I also wanted to get rid of the scars. According to Dr. Dendy, "That's where the lasers come in. This helps resolve the healing and the inflammation from the acne lesion much more quickly. You look much better and don't have these chronic reminders of breakouts from the past."

Does It Hurt?

During my first session, Dr. Dendy prepped the treatment area with a cleansing towel, and handed me a pair of protective sunglasses. It felt . . . less than chic, but hey, anything for perfect skin.

It is painless, and she recalls that none of her patients have ever stopped the procedure due to pain - even the wimpiest ones.

I almost want to say that PDL hurt, or it took a long time. But in fact, it was a string of beeps, flashes of lights, and tiny cool shots on my skin that lasted under two minutes. I jumped every time, but it was more from shock of the unexpected light flashes that coincide with the cool sprays than the feeling itself. Dr. Dendy herself admits that she still moves a bit during the PDL procedure. It is painless, and she recalls that none of her patients have ever stopped the procedure due to pain - even the wimpiest ones.

The Results

Immediately after, my face was glowing like I had just gotten an intense massage at a facial, yet it was also very pink. The next morning, I was happy that my pimple and nose were finally on the road to recovery; Dr. Dendy said that my pimple would get darker before it cleared up.

Aftercare

Regardless of what acne you have, if you decide to get PDL, it's important to maintain your treatment protocol for a outcome that will produce longevity. Additionally, use gentle products as suggested by the doctor.

First, you should keep your regular skincare regimen. I use a cleanser with salicylic acid to clear pores and treat acne, and a vitamin C serum called Nerium IllumaBoost Brightening & Shield ($80). Recently, I added the Mattifying Hydrator Pore Minimizing Gel ($48) from Dr. Brandt to minimize the appearance of large pores.

One trick I learned from Sir John when I interviewed him on my YouTube channel is to use matte products on areas of concern, and use reflective products to your advantage. For instance, the Josie Maran Moonstone Drops ($48) with argan oil are moisturizing and give my skin a dewy glow. I follow those with sunscreen, because Dr. Dendy would not like it if I didn't, and lastly Erborian CC Creme ($45), which is tinted to conceal any active lesions, darkness, redness, and acne.

At night, I like to make sure I use the Conture Kinetic Reveal Exfoliating Scrub ($28) twice a week to unclog pores, followed by Differin Gel ($14) on acne-prone areas. Occasionally, I like to use the Dr. Brandt Hydro-Biotic Mask ($52), which I leave on overnight to hydrate and reduce inflammation.

As I have learned, hormonal acne is inexorable (much like school stress and boy problems), but like anything else in life, there are ways to prevent, treat, and overcome sudden obstacles.

This Blogger Stopped Shaving Her Body Hair and Now Lives Her Most Comfortable Life

When fitness blogger Morgan Mikenas was in middle school, she was bullied during gym class about having hair on her legs. She went home after school and cried to her mom begging her to teach her how to shave, but years later, she made a personal decision to stop shaving and she's finally living her truest life. "I'm not trying to make all of humanity just stop shaving their armpits and leg hair anymore," Morgan said in a YouTube video explaining why she quit shaving. "I just want to inspire others in what works for you, what makes you feel the most comfortable."

She said that the number one reason why she stopped was because of the time it took. "One day, I was like, why am I doing this anymore?" and that was it for Morgan. She stopped shaving her legs over a year ago and has never looked back. Society puts pressure on women to look a certain way, but Morgan explained she is leaving her body the way Mother Nature intended.

"When I would let my leg hair grow out in the past I would feel dirty, I would feel kind of ashamed because I just didn't feel feminine," she said. "So, then I would feel obligated to go shave my legs so I would feel good and feel sexy, but not anymore. Honestly I frickin' love my hair, I love my body hair, I love the hair that grows on my body. I just like being my most natural and human self."

Since she stopped shaving, Morgan has been more comfortable than ever before. Her boyfriend encourages her and thinks she looks beautiful with or without hair, but no one should be ashamed of their body hair and Morgan wants her followers to know that. I've Been Using the Same $8 Mascara For Years and It Makes My Lashes Crazy Long

When it comes to good makeup recommendations, I can always trust my mom. She taught me everything I know about beauty products - she can rock everything from a dark lip to a shimmery smoky eye. That's why I totally trusted her when she recommended L'Oréal Voluminous Original Mascara ($8) to me several years ago. Her lashes looked so long and fluttery with it on that I had to try it for myself.

I have always been frustrated with my own lashes. They're short and straight. It's hard to find a mascara that clings to each hair and truly gives off a luscious finish. That's when this new formula changed everything. The soft, classic brush combs through my lashes while applying plenty of product. With just one coat, my lashes are instantly thicker and longer. In the top photo below, you can see the difference when I apply the mascara to just my left eye. The photo beneath that shows both eyes fully coated.

Besides making my lashline more visible, the Carbon Black hue in inky and saturated. It pops against my blue eyes and nicely complements all eye shadow colors. The mascara also stays on all day without flaking or rubbing off. After a few swipes in the morning I'm all set until I wash my face at night.

I've been using this mascara for years now and it's still my favorite. If you're in the market for a new option, head to your local drugstore and give this one a try. I have no doubt you'll be as obsessed as I am.

Can Smoking Weed Ruin Your Skin?

Unsplash / Connor Limbocker

It's no secret that CBD oil has infiltrated the beauty space. From lip balms to bath bombs, the cannabis extract helps its devotees de-stress and chill out. According to dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, MD, of Schweiger Dermatology Group, CBD "interacts with pain receptions in skin and has an anti-inflammatory effect." Because of that, some people who suffer from irritating skin conditions such as psoriasis or acne slather it on.

Sounds gucci, but what happens when you smoke weed? More specifically: can you toke your way to clear skin? (Asking for a friend).

In short: probably not. "There are no known skin benefits to smoking weed," Dr. Nazarian said. The womps continue: "Cannabis has reports of causing a constriction of blood vessels with consumption or smoking, which would make it harmful for skin by decreasing blood flow, killing off skin cells, and even forming ulcers." On the flip side, Dr. Nazarian says she is a big fan of topical CBD and prescribes it to patients with burns, eczema, and poison ivy.

Unsplash
Josh Zeichner, MD, a dermatologist and the Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, has a slightly different opinion: "I'm not telling people to go out and smoke pot all day, but cannabinoid receptors such as THC have anti-inflammatory properties," he said. As the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, THC is what creates the high you feel. Because of that, possession of a THC-infused product is a no-no in states where weed isn't legalized, or if you don't have a med card.

Before you take that as a reason to go light up, consider what Dr. Mona Gohara of Yale New Haven Hospital has to say about smoking in general: "Your lifestyle habits might change after you smoke pot, and that can adversely affect your skin," she said. "You might smoke and then go eat lots of junk food, or not get enough sleep. Both of those factors can hurt your skin's health."

The Completely Addictive Method For Grilling Burgers

I've grilled many burgers in my day, many of which were decent but none of which were restaurant-quality - that is, until I learned this technique from America's Test Kitchen. It's by far the most foolproof way to grill a burger with a charred exterior and juicy pink interior. The most important factor? Don't buy preground meat. Another little-known tip is to freeze the patties to prevent them from falling apart on the grill. Finally, let the burgers rest for a full five minutes to lock in their juices. Try this method for your next cookout, and prepare for everyone to ask for the secret!

6 Secrets Real Estate Agents Know About Kitchen Remodels

So you're finally ready to renovate your dated kitchen, but unsure what upgrades will see a return when it comes time to sell. Katharine Tuckerman, a seasoned real estate agent in Manhattan's Upper East Side with Brown Harris Stevens, says that this room can make or break a deal, because buyers know they will "spend all their time in the kitchen!"

First and foremost, "people really lean towards light and bright kitchens," she says. And although there are so many fun opportunities for customization and colors in a remodel, Katharine confirms the adage that "a neutral palate is always a safe call." Of course, it's not quite that simple! While buyers often anticipate "making minor adjustments," some specific design choices have major selling power, or will just make the space "show much better," as Katharine puts it. From countertops and cabinetry to lighting and appliances, she gives us her winning formula for a kitchen renovation that will rock the MLS!

A Hands-Free Hack For Peeling Hard-Boiled Eggs

As easy as hard-boiled eggs are to make, they're a pain to peel, that is until I learned this hack. It involves shaking the egg in a glass cup with a bit of water until the eggshell breaks into a million shards. It seemed completely unfathomable until I tested it out myself and discovered it's completely legitimate! Here's how it's done.

Fill a glass cup or a mason jar with about 1/2 inch of water. Then add the egg. If you have a mason jar, screw on the lid.

Turn the cup to the side, pressing one hand over the open end so the water doesn't pour out.

Start shaking! Don't let the egg roll around the glass, but rather make sure it's hitting the sides of the glass. You'll begin to see the eggshell cracking . . .

Keep shaking until the shell slips off! Rinse the egg under cold water to remove any small shell shards, then enjoy.

How Moving 6 Times in 3 Years Made Me a Minimalist

Nearly three years ago, I stood in my parents' garage watching strangers sift through my things while I tried not to cry. I had just ended a toxic relationship with an abusive partner, but he was also my first love, and we were happy once. We shared an apartment (my first) for three years, and now I was getting rid of all its furnishings. Each item I sold triggered dozens of memories, both good and bad, and I sold them all.

Since then, I've lived in three different time zones and each move was more intense than the one that came before it. I moved from Missouri to Brooklyn with nothing but a suitcase and my laptop bag, then six months later, I gave away all my furniture and moved back to Missouri with the same ensemble. Nine months passed before a troubling cocktail of violent neighbors and bed bugs led me to burn all my furniture and move into my parents' basement. And less than one year after that fiasco, I drove across the country to pursue a job in Los Angeles - with only $300 in my bank account and a couple of suitcases in my trunk. I drove back across the country five months later to visit family and save up for my own place, and after two months in Missouri, I was finally able to afford my own apartment in Long Beach. I packed my car as full as I could and gave away the things that didn't fit and headed back to the West Coast.

The past three years have been as stressful as they have been adventurous, but the whole experience has taught me so much about letting go of things - literally. Don't get me wrong, I still like to hang art on my walls and I own five pairs of earrings, but I've sold, gifted, or burned most of my earthly possessions over the past three years, and it's helped me realize that my viewpoint on minimalism was extremely skewed for a long time. I used to equate a minimalist lifestyle with scarcity and boredom, but moving six times in three years made me realize it's actually just a functional, sustainable, and peaceful way to live.

Since all of my clothes, shoes, and accessories can fit into one large suitcase these days, I rarely agonize over what I'm going to wear. I own fewer dishes and towels than I used to, so I'm more motivated to wash my dishes daily and I'm less likely to let my laundry pile up. And because I try not to hang onto too many things that I don't use regularly, I could pack up my entire apartment in a day if needed. But perhaps more importantly than all of that, embracing minimalism has given me a sense of peace that I didn't have before. I know now that I could lose most of my possessions and still be completely OK, because I don't actually need that much to live well, and stuff can (usually) be replaced.

I'm certainly not the most hardcore minimalist you'll ever meet, but I have picked up a few tricks along my journey. Here are just a few of my tips for getting started:

  • If you feel overwhelmed by your pantry, closet, garage, storage unit, etc., set a timer for 30 minutes and just do what you can.
  • If you haven't worn something in six months, give it to someone who will.
  • If you've never read a book you own, and don't particularly want to read it, donate it to someone who will/does.
  • If you have Spotify, Apple Music, or any streaming service, gift, sell, or toss those CDs you've been hanging onto. You don't need them.
  • If you are stockpiling old Christmas cards, receipts, hair elastics that have lost stretchiness, or anything else on this list, just get rid of it.

It took moving six times in three years for me to understand that minimalism isn't about doing without, it's about simplifying your life and learning how to let go. With a few notable exceptions, my happiness and security aren't tied to the things I own. For me, that's what embracing minimalism is all about.

4 Crucial Lessons Minimalism Has Taught Me

When I graduated university and came back to the room I grew up in, I realized I had the massive job of cleaning ahead of me. I've always been quite a messy person and I used to hate cleaning. I had huge collections of perfume samples, mini shampoos, pencils, and scrap paper.

As I stood there, barely able to walk into my room, I remembered a documentary I watched on Netflix last year about minimalism. I really liked the ideas when I watched it, but didn't make the effort to apply them at the time. So I put it on again to get some motivation.

After watching about 20 minutes, I got kind of excited to start cleaning. I put on some headphones and let the audio keep playing as I started to clean up my closet. I found this very motivational, so as I continued to clean through the week, I would listen to different YouTube videos and audiobooks about minimalism.

I'm far from being a minimalist, but the simple techniques I've learned so far have already improved my outlook on cleaning (and life) so much. It's really about simplifying life and prioritizing happiness.

Here are the most useful tips I've learned:

  1. For every object you own, ask yourself, "Does this bring me joy?" If the answer is no, then donate or throw away the item. If the answer is yes, but you don't have any room for it, thank the item for the good times and then say goodbye. As stupid as this sounds, it actually works! Obviously, if the item brings you lots of joy and you have space for it, then keep it! This is a tip from minimalism master Marie Kondo.
  2. Start by letting go of the things that you have the least amount of emotional attachment to (the closet is a good place to start).
  3. If you're having trouble letting go of an item that you love but don't use, think about how it could be enjoyed by someone else rather than sitting alone, all sad and dusty in your closet.
  4. Enjoy the process of seeing immediate results as you clean!

As I kept cleaning, I started to realize that physical baggage was also emotional baggage. I realized how I was literally going through my past, deciding which memories to keep and which ones to let go of. It was also a time for self-reflection. In my past objects and clothing, I could see who I once was - how I've changed and what's remained the same. In this way, cleaning is fun; you rediscover treasures, learn about yourself, and clear your mind. And really, our environment is just a reflection of our mind - after all, we do create the spaces around us. Minimalism isn't about owning nothing; it is about reflecting on each item you own and its effect on your state of mind.

If you allow it, the principles of minimalism expand far beyond keeping your room clean into every aspect of life. The question "Does this bring me joy?" is so important not only for tidying up, but for everything we do.

The Top 10 Travel Destinations of 2018

If there's one resolution you actually commit to in 2018, let it be travel. It may not be your typical fitness or organization-oriented goal, but it can make you richer in terms of self-growth, new experiences, and even personal happiness. And all of that is far more valuable than any annual goal you usually make.

With endless sources of travel inspiration available, figuring out where to go next is the toughest part. But we've eliminated all the hard work for you, so that all that's left for you to do is choose. From rising hot spots to destinations you never knew existed, these are the top 10 places to travel to in 2018.

Where will you go?

1. Boracay, Philippines

This small island in the central Philippines only spans four and a half miles long, but you'll find that to be plenty when you see all the natural beauty Boracay has to offer. Navigate the mini paradise via bike and spend your stay sunbathing on White Beach, collecting puka shells on Yapak, or sipping on cocktails while the sun goes down and fire dancers come out.

2. Ljubljana, Slovenia Reminiscent of Amsterdam's famous canals while blending Mediterranean, German, and Slovenian culture, Ljubljana is a beautiful combination of old and new. The Ljubljanica River divides the capital's Old Town from its commercial Center district, marked by the city's most iconic landmark, the Triple Bridge. You'll find it difficult to not fall in love, as Ljubljana boasts as much charm and wonderful architecture as it does museums, outdoor cafes, green landscapes, and rich history. 3. Ninh Binh, Vietnam

While most travelers flock to Hanoi, Vietnam's majestic rural side in the Red River Delta is sometimes overlooked. However, as more people begin to recognize Ninh Binh's serene landscapes as a reason to add it to their itineraries, it's only a matter of time until the northern area becomes the next popular place to be. With its limestone cliffs, temples, lush green valleys, and hiking trails and caves, this province easily takes a top spot.

4. Sucre, BoliviaBolivia's capital is known for its whitewashed buildings and colonial architecture, but there's also plenty more to do and see. The historic city of Sucre offers a number of museums, cathedrals, and landmarks, including its main square, Plaza 25 de Mayo, and Casa de la Libertad - and it's also home to one of the largest sets of dinosaur footprints in the world.5. Seoul, South Korea Seoul is where pop culture, technology, and tradition blend. You'll see both fashion-forward streetwear and traditional hanboks, skyscrapers and Buddhist temples, street markets and made-for-Instagram cafes. Its high-tech subways also allow easy access to neighboring cities in case you want to explore past South Korea's capital. Spend your mornings palace hopping and tea sipping at Insadong, and then see the city come to life from the N Seoul Tower. You'll never find yourself short of things to do.6. Essaouira, Morocco

Travelers who prefer the slow pace of a coastal town over a bustling and dense city will be entranced by Essaouira. Known as a port and resort center, Africa's windy city is as popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing as it is for pure relaxation. Walk along its beaches and through the vibrant medina, browse the boutiques, check out the catch of the day at the fish port, and more. And if you're looking for a little more hustle, Marrakech is only a bus ride away.

7. Zadar, Croatia Consider taking a holiday along Croatia's Dalmatian coast where you're more likely to find less crowds than at Dubrovnik and Split. The seaside city is rich with culture, history, and romance; equally known for its Roman and Venetian ruins and stunning sunsets. Once you get your fill of landmarks, churches, and cathedrals, head east of Old Town over to Kolovare Beach for bars and restaurants or offshore at Kornati National Park for diving and snorkeling. You can't leave Zadar without marveling at the musical Sea Organ, either.8. Upolu, Samoa

This paradisal island in Samoa is home to everything you want: lush rainforest, lagoons, dramatic waterfalls, idyllic beaches, the international airport, and much, much more. Dive into the Instagram-famous To Sua Ocean Trench, surf and fish along the coast year-round, or indulge at restaurants and bars in Samoa's capital city, Apia, before heading back to Upolu's sleepier parts.

9. Tbilisi, Georgia Georgia's capital is far from ordinary. Visitors are able to witness the modernization of Tbilisi since its time under Persian and Russian rule, as well as older reminders scattered throughout its diverse architecture. Not too far from the plazas, five-star hotels, bars and clubs, and museums remain small shops and quaint living. At Old Town, you'll find ancient cobblestoned roads, and winding lanes, while the rest of the city is gradually coming into its own, neither distinctly Western or Eastern. Travelers will find themselves captivated by this eclectic and multi-ethnic and multicultural destination that's truly unlike any other.10. Mallorca, Spain The Mediterranean's shining gem is loved by many for good reason. The island's breathtaking coasts, aqua-blue waters, and postcard coves are just a few appeals. Mallorca (Majorca) did inspire Chopin and other musicians, artists, and writers, after all. Maybe it'll be the picturesque villages, the cuisine, the architecture, the mountainous landscape, the beaches, or the nightlife that seduces you. Whatever it is, prepare to extend your stay.
