What Really Happened When I Rented Out My Apartment on Airbnb

Make money while you're on vacation? Sounds too good to be true, but it is possible for many, thanks to websites like Airbnb that allow you to rent out your empty home while you travel.

I decided to take the plunge into the sharing economy during my recent two-week European vacation. While my husband and I were traveling in Rome, Sicily, and Paris, three different groups of travelers slept in our San Francisco home. A family of four from the UK made a three-day stop during their California road trip. A trio of start-up workers in town from New Zealand stayed for a week. And a woman from Sweden, on vacation to celebrate her 50th birthday, enjoyed our home with her husband and three children. Here are four reasons I'm happy I put my trust in perfect strangers - and they're not just financial.

I Learned My Local Housing Laws

As a stickler for the rules, I decided to register for a short-term rental permit. While my rental situation was legal under San Francisco's housing laws, getting the permit was not easy. I had to register for a business license, make a trip to a city planning office and the DMV during work hours, and fill out complicated paperwork. But the process helped me understand the brewing debate in San Francisco over housing and vacation rental regulation, and I now feel better informed to vote and weigh in on the issue. It also encouraged me to email my local elected supervisor with some suggestions to make the process easier, and he even got back to me and made some changes on the city's website. While I wish it wasn't such a headache, I at least got a sense of civic engagement out of it. Some advice: give yourself a few weeks to complete the process.

I Cleaned the Sh*t Out of My House

I was already familiar with the benefits of the KonMari method and have an aversion to clutter. But knowing that strangers were about to enter my home (and then review it online) made me look at my home with fresh eyes. My husband and I reorganized our kitchen to make sure everything had a logical place.

If you're worried your home could get damaged or degraded, know that it had the opposite effect on my place.

We cleaned off surfaces, emptied our nightstands, scanned paperwork to the Cloud so we could shred the physical copies, and removed personal items from our living spaces. We finally installed new curtains in our bedroom and replaced a broken lamp. We emptied our dressers to make room for our guests' belongings, limiting ourselves to one owners' closet worth of clothes. We took multiple trips to Goodwill, not believing all this "stuff" was once in our house.

If you're worried your home could get damaged or degraded if you rent it out on Airbnb, know that it had the opposite effect on my place. All this cleaning and organizing made me feel like our apartment got a major upgrade.

It Made Me Trust People

Sometimes the news can make us feel like the world is falling apart. Welcoming strangers into my home reminded me that most people are inherently good. Our guests were easy to communicate with, respectful of our home, and even left us treats, including a handwritten letter signed by the kids and chocolate from New Zealand.

It Helped Pay For Our Vacation

Traveling is a luxury. Our trip became much more affordable thanks to the money made from our apartment, which would have otherwise sat empty. Airbnb makes the payment process easy, and we got the money directly deposited into our account each time a new guest checked in.

Things to Keep in Mind

While there were a lot of hours spent preparing our apartment for Airbnb, the effort felt worth it. If it sounds like a promising idea to you, here are some more tips to consider before renting your place:

  • Learn your local laws and insurance rules. Airbnb lists responsible hosting guidelines and city regulations online.
  • Find a cleaning professional you can trust. We made a checklist for our cleaning woman and walked her through the schedule and the plan for sheets and towels, since we needed her to turn over the apartment while we were gone. There are also services that will do this for you, like Pillow.
  • Consider keypad locks. We changed our keys to industrial keypad locks so we just had to give our guests codes to enter our place.
  • Prepare your check-in and check-out messages ahead of time. I wrote them in a Google Doc and downloaded the Google Docs and Airbnb apps to my iPhone. Then before each person was set to check in or out, I would copy/paste the message from Google Docs into the Airbnb message and send away. It took 30 seconds.
  • Create an apartment guide. Explain how to use your dishwasher, laundry, or other appliances, and make note of fun things to do in the area. I wrote ours in a Google Doc and sent it ahead of time to each guest and also left a printed copy in the house.
  • Set up an owners' closet. We consolidated our private belongings to one closet and locked it. It gave us peace of mind.

I know I will turn to Airbnb next time I plan a vacation. The opportunity to afford new experiences is worth putting my trust in fellow travelers.

Unicorns, Who? Disney Now Has a Freakin' Iridescent Rhino Cupcake With Edible Glitter

I never thought I'd put "rhino" and "cupcake" in the same sentence, but here we are. One of the newest cupcakes you can find at Disney World is the Iridescent Rhino Cupcake at The Mara, the quick-service spot at Animal Kingdom Lodge. The chocolate cupcake has caramel filling, pink and purple frosting, edible glitter, crunchy pearls, and to top it all off, a rhino cookie. If this cupcake could talk, it would say, "'Scuse me, unicorns, but it's time to have my moment," probably.

The definitely tops the list of the best Disney cupcakes, and it's part of Disney World's lineup of other iridescent treats (which does include a sparkly unicorn cupcake, of course). If you find yourself eating dinner at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, be sure to save room for dessert!

Reese's and Hershey's Whipped Creams Really Exist, So I'm Never Eating Waffles Plain Again

Remember when you were a kid and whipped cream would go straight from the can to your mouth? No buffers of ice cream or waffles were necessary; all you needed was that aerosol dairy goodness. Well, prepare to revert back to your childhood days: Reese's and Hershey's whipped cream flavors exist, and they look good enough to eat straight.

While Instagram user markie_devo teased rumors of the whipped toppings in June, it seemed almost too good to be true. In 2018, do we deserve something as wonderful as peanut buttery, chocolate goodness layered on top of our favorite desserts? The answer, it turns out, is abso-freaking-lutely.

Thanks to some careful sleuthing, a few lucky food fans have already found the actual whipped creams at their local Hy-Vee. We haven't seen the tasty treats at any other supermarket yet, but our fingers are definitely crossed and our mouths are already watering.

Praise the Internet Gods! Amazon Prime Day Is Here and the Tech Deals Are INSANE

Get those clicking fingers ready, everyone! Amazon Prime Day has officially begun, and the deals are insane. The sale goes from July 16 at 3 p.m. ET and will last all the way through July 17. Amazon's Site Is Down on Prime Day, but People Can't Even Get Mad at Such a Cute Error Page

There's been so much hype leading up to Amazon Prime Day, and for good reason - the promotion offers so many awesome sales for Prime members. So when Prime Day officially began at its scheduled time of noon PT on Monday, people all over the world headed to Amazon, wallets in hand and ready to add things to their cart - that is, until the site crashed.

Amazon surely anticipated this popular event to be a huge hit, but maybe even the company couldn't predict just how much traffic would come in all at once. Although shoppers are disappointed in the delay, many aren't complaining since they're being greeted with photos of adorable dogs on the error pages. Corgis to the rescue! Read ahead for some of the best reactions to this unexpected glitch.

Thrill-Seekers, Would You Ride This Dangerous-Looking 180-Foot Forest Slide?

Remember those really tall carnival slides you would go on when you were a kid? You would sit on potato sacks and slide down from way above the ground. Or maybe you recall the playground slides where groups of children would gather around the stairs leading up to them, excitedly waiting their turn to slide down. Now imagine a slide, similar to these two, but just much, much higher and nearly 180 feet in length, amid a forest - dreamy, right?

This famous 180-foot giant slide is located at Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald in Germany and is open from mid-March through early November each year from morning until later in the evening. To get to the top, slide-goers must travel up a curving wooden tree walk that takes you high above Germany's Black Forest, offering a scenic view of one of the country's largest vacation destinations along the way. Visitors, ages 6 years and up, use large, sliding mats to plunge down the 180-foot tunnel, winding tens of stories down and eventually landing at the base of the forest.

If you plan on visiting this corner of the world and are looking for a thrilling experience, be sure to check out the slide at Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald while you are there!

No, You're Not Dreaming - Rocky Road Oreos Are Finally Launching This Month

If you thought Oreo was done releasing new cookie flavors this Summer, think again. Shortly after announcing the launch of its Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake Oreos, the brand confirmed that Rocky Road Trip Oreos are officially on the way! The new flavor will hit shelves on July 23.

The news comes as a surprise given that it was previously believed that Rocky Road Trip would be released later this Fall - but we are not upset about this change of plans. According to food blogger Junk Banter, who got to preview the new snack, it does not disappoint. "I think Oreo hit it out of the park, honestly," the blogger wrote, "offering some firsts with marshmallow bits in the cookie and soy nut inclusions to emulate those almonds." We can't wait to stock up on this action-packed treat.

Here's What to Eat in the Morning If You Usually Skip Breakfast

Some people just aren't hungry in the a.m., while others are in a rush to head to work and simply don't have enough time to whip something up. Still, eating breakfast in the morning is super important, as it gives the brain and body the fuel it needs to feel energized and satiated during the day. Here are the best foods to eat in the morning when you're not really a breakfast person.

While I wish it wasn't such a headache, I at least got a sense of civic engagement out of it. Some advice: give yourself a few weeks to complete the process.

Taylor Swift's Dress Is Romantic, but Her Shoes Are Wildly Sexy . . . Are You Ready For It?

After booking it to Turks and Caicos for a romantic trip with her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, Taylor spent some time in NYC with friend Gigi Hadid in a pretty adorable '90s outfit. Based on her cutesy swimsuits and cat tees, we weren't expecting what happened next: the singer stepped out in a supershort floral shirt dress from Faith Connexion ($1,460, originally $2,085) and Summer-appropriate thigh-high boots.

Hers are from Jimmy Choo and they come with an embellished heel, on sale for $948. But that perfect camel shade is popping up on plenty of thigh-highs, and it's just the right tone for transitioning to Fall. Taylor's leggy outfit was complete with round, retro Elie Saab frames and a chain-strap crossbody, but you can style your boots with a worn-in denim skirt and slouchy sweater later on. The look is, well, pretty much as classic as Taylor herself. Read on to zoom in on the details, then scoop up Taylor's exact boots or shop plenty of similar designs we found.

Gisele Bündchen's Black Bikini Is So Damn Sexy, No Wonder Tom Brady Is Packing on the PDA

Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady are bringing the heat this Summer. The adorable couple, who recently celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary this past February, was spotted in Costa Rica along with their children. While enjoying a family beach day, the duo could barely keep their hands off of each other and we're pretty sure it had something to do with Gisele's amazing bikini.

The supermodel wore a classic black triangle bikini top that came with a pair of cheeky side-tie bottoms. Gisele's flattering swimsuit accentuated her long legs and toned abs. She accessorized with hoop earrings and oversize sunglasses. Read on to take a look at Gisele's swimsuit from all angles and buy similar versions for your wardrobe ahead.

This Sexy Side View of Emily Ratajkowski's One-Piece Is About to Make Your Head Spin

Emily Ratajkowski is so often in her swimsuits, they've become something of an unofficial uniform for the model/actress. On that note, you'd think we'd be almost immune to the sexy snaps she's posting on Instagram, but yet again, she threw up a photo in her Inamorata line and our jaws dropped. This time, thanks to a black one-piece style with a barely there side view, we had to do a double take. From the front, the swimsuit was high cut, with a tube-style silhouette, but from the side, it showed off a whole lot more skin, confirming the fact that, yes, Emily's swimsuit shots do just keep getting sexier.

Read on to see exactly what we mean and shop the same exact suit if you're feeling inspired.

Hailey Baldwin Needs No Flirty Dress or Thigh-Grazing Miniskirt For Days With Justin, See?

Hailey Baldwin jetted off to Miami with her fiancé, Justin Bieber, in blue silk separates, and it looks like she kept the "PJ vibe" going for the duration of her trip. When she and Justin arrived at their hotel, Hailey was dressed in a breezy palm-print short set by Kith ($220) that she coordinated with an olive tank, Yeezy trainers ($225), gold jewelry, and her Off-White x Louis Vuitton backpack.

Flash forward to the duo's trip home, and Hailey was rocking Off-White coordinates (you can score her button-down for $1,060) with Adidas Continental 80 sneakers ($80). It seems like Hailey has the easiest approach to dressing up - or shall we say down? - on vacation. We're all about her relaxed look, too, which is proof you don't have to slip on a skintight dress or supershort miniskirt when you're with your boo. Sometimes sexy just means low-key. Read on for another glimpse, then shop some similar pieces to Hailey's.

Kourtney Kardashian Basically Exemplifies the Peach Emoji in This Cheeky Thong Bikini

There's no denying Kourtney Kardashian is living her best life. After wearing what seemed like a million bikinis during her idyllic Italian getaway, Kourtney is back in LA serving up a major Summer look that made our eyes pop out. The starlet posed in a scandalous Dolce and Gabbana bikini that came with a colorful floral pattern and black lace piping.

Kourt's high-leg swimsuit bottoms put her famous assets on full display, and she accessorized her thong bikini with an oversize straw hat. She captioned the cheeky photo, "Don't be shady, be a lady." Read on to see the scandalous snap, and buy similar versions of her swimsuit if you'd like ahead.

Kim Kardashian's Short Black Dress Is Barely Staying on Her Body - She Had to Wear Shorts Underneath It

Kim Kardashian is all about vintage pieces lately. The starlet rocked a body-hugging vintage dress from Dolce & Gabbana that barely fit her famous curves at Bodycon in Los Angeles. Her LBD featured a big keyhole cutout and a tie-front accent that showed off her toned abs. The off-the-shoulder number came complete with so many cutouts, we aren't even sure if it constitutes a dress.

Kim's teeny tiny mini also had a daring front split that went so high up, she had to style it with a pair of biker shorts. The beauty mogul accessorized with a mini black bag that was just big enough to fit her phone and a pair of beige lace-up heels. Keep reading to admire Kim's look from all angles, and buy similar versions of her dress ahead if you dare.

Ashley Graham Is a Woman, and You Better Be Ready to Hear Her Roar in This Leopard Bikini

If you didn't realize, Ashley Graham loves a good leopard swimsuit! It doesn't matter if she's mixing and matching with pink bottoms or wearing a standout one-piece, Ashley loves to rock the bold print. The model knows exactly how to wear a swimsuit for her body, and her latest choice is no exception.

Ashley posted a photo on Instagram Stories rocking a very sexy leopard bikini from her Swimsuits For All collection while hanging out on a boat. Meghan Markle Already Has Her Go-To Dress Style Down Pat, and It All Boils Down to This

All eyes have been on Meghan Markle this year as she becomes accustomed to her new royal life, and she's been exceeding our expectations every step of the way. Each time the Duchess of Sussex steps out with Prince Harry, she gives us a major case of outfit envy by sporting the loveliest dress and most versatile heels. Though Meghan's ensembles have ranged from floral dresses to black pantsuits, we're already seeing the newlywed develop a signature style, and it all boils down to bateau necklines.

Bateau is the fancy French word for "boat," and it's used to describe wide, high necklines that cut straight across the top along the collarbone without plunging. The silhouette is flattering, modest, and downright regal, aka the perfect fit for a duchess. Meghan has worn boat-neck dresses for multiple occasions this year, including Prince Louis's christening, her visit to Ireland, and, most notably, her wedding day, when she wowed us by slipping into an understated yet gorgeous Givenchy gown that showed the subtlest bit of shoulder.

Considering the power of the so-called "Meghan Markle effect," we would hardly be surprised if there's an uptick in the popularity of boat-neck dresses as Meghan continues to wear them. Ahead, take a chronological look at all the times the former Suits star has put her bateau obsession on display this year - so far.

How Training For a Half Marathon Changed My Mindset

I'd always been a reasonably fit person. I played soccer through college and lived an active lifestyle after that. My husband and I enjoyed bike riding, kayaking, jogging, and staying healthy. But after having kids, my body turned to mush. I was out of shape and gasped while trotting up the stairs or even attempting to get back on my bike. So after my youngest turned 1 year old, I finally decided to start working out again. Only, after a few short months, I still wasn't satisfied. Although I was back into decent shape, I missed being competitive against others and within myself. After talking to my friend, she suggested, "Why don't we train for a half marathon?"

I stared at her blankly. She knew that running was the one form of exercise I despised. To be honest, I was scared of the failure. I didn't think I could finish all 13 miles of a half marathon. In the past, I'd joke that I'd run if someone was chasing after me or toward the clearance rack, but for enjoyment? No. Yet she persisted. "Come on, it won't be that bad and we can do it together." I gave in. We signed up for our first 5k. The entire race seemed to go uphill and I gasped for air the entire run. I thought I was dying. My mind was not conquering the pain that my body was in.

After that race, we signed up for two more 5Ks and a 10K. I never thought I'd be able to run over six miles. I used to think someone needed to keep 911 on their speed dial when I tried. But after the second 5K, which wasn't that bad, I started to increase my mileage with each run. I'd add only a half mile or so each time, but I did it. I put the ear buds in my ear and blasted "Lose Yourself" by Eminem, "This Girl Is on Fire" by Alicia Keys, and more. It became easier for my mentality to push through those hard miles. I'd blaze through my quiet trail with my adrenaline running through me. Finally, I realized . . . I could do it.

And I did. My friend and I managed to finish that 10K thanks to our "mind over matter" mindsets. I finished fifth in my age group, which is no great feat, but to me it was. It felt good to know that my mind could push my body to accomplish something new, conquer any old fears, and kick ass like I used to when I was younger. A couple months later, we finished our goal - we crossed the finish line of that half marathon. During the last mile of that race, I had to run up a steep hill. Anger ran through me and my legs turned to pudding. I wanted desperately to stop. But my mind told me to run, so I did. There were several other times during that race when I thought I had hit the wall, but my mind thought otherwise. I kept going despite the pain that my body was in.

After the half marathon, I've used what I learned in all aspects of my life. I let my mind conquer my body or any other uncertainties I may be having. If I'm feeling doubtful about my writing, for example, I work harder and then submit to the big publications. I have nothing to lose, after all. If I feel nervous about attempting a new kind of workout, I just remember that I have already pushed through a half marathon and that I can do anything. I'm grateful that my friend suggested running that half marathon because now I know that my body and mind are capable of so much more. And it's great that I get to live my life with no limitations!

This Is the Worst Thing You Can Do If You're Trying to Lose Body Fat and Build Muscle

Regardless of your fitness goals - weight loss, building muscle, becoming faster, growing a bigger booty - there's no magic pill or express lane for achieving results quick. As a personal trainer, my main goals are to educate people on how the human body works, help them become more functional, and help them achieve their fitness goals.

My experiences as a Division 1 All-American sprinter, group instructor, and personal trainer have revealed this: a common misconception people have about losing fat and building muscle is that they should focus on spot reduction.

What Is Spot Reduction?

Spot reduction is the false belief that you can do isolated exercises to target a specific muscle (i.e., triceps, inner thighs, lower belly) and, as a result, lose fat in that area. Small muscle fatigue may leave your muscles feeling shaky, but ultimately it isn't improving your overall fitness, which is needed to lose fat.

Does Spot Reduction Work?

The short answer is no, spot reduction doesn't work. If your primary goal is to lose body fat, spot reduction won't work because you're targeting small muscles. There's nothing wrong with wanting to lose fat in your arms and build muscle, but doing countless triceps dips won't work. If you're already relatively fit and don't have much fat to lose, spot-toning - developing a particular muscle or muscle group - can help you see more muscle definition.

What Should I Do Instead?

Instead of obsessing over a "problem area," focus on training your entire body. This will help improve your overall strength and health, and you'll achieve the results you're looking for a lot faster. To improve and enhance your physique, don't focus on tiny muscles like your triceps - think bigger. Doing big, compound exercises recruiting multiple muscle groups at once will allow you to elevate your heart rate, burn more calories, and improve your coordination. Exercises like squats, deadlifts, lunges, bench presses, bent-over rows, and pull-ups are all great exercises to do if you want to burn fat and build muscle.

Beginner Treadmill Plan: Here's How to Build Up to a 5K in 8 Weeks

If you're one of those people who can't run a single mile without huffing and puffing, you're not alone. Even the strongest runners had to start somewhere! Sure, some people are just born with natural athleticism, but most have to build up their endurance from the ground up. Good news for you: we teamed up with an expert to create the perfect beginner treadmill plan that will help you work up to a 5K (or just over three miles) in eight weeks. Totally doable!

Ahead is a full breakdown by Michael Olzinski, MSc, Equinox run coach and Lululemon run coach, that includes three training sessions per week.

Shaun T Says This Is How Often You Should Lift Weights in a Week to Get Stronger

Shaun T is the creative force behind one of Beachbody's most successful fitness programs, Insanity. Insanity has shown that you don't need to spend countless hours in the gym picking up weights without a purpose. Instead, it's taught people how to use their bodyweight to get in shape and have fun while doing it.

Bodyweight exercises can help you lean out and build strength, but if you want to continue building muscle you're going to need to start weightlifting. When you lift weights, you place your body under a load creating microscopic tears in the muscle fibers. As your muscle fibers begin to repair themselves, they become stronger.

According to Shaun T, "You really only need two days a week [of weightlifting] because you can do your large muscle groups and small muscle groups on different days." The large muscle groups in your body are your chest, back, and legs. Smaller muscle groups target specific muscles like your triceps, biceps, and calves. In order for your muscles to recover, Shaun T said to give your body 48 hours before training the same muscle group. You may find that two times a week isn't enough for your specific goals, and in that event you should consider increasing your weekly strength training sessions. Whether you do HIIT workouts or lift four times a week, Shaun T said that you'll reap the biggest results by being consistent.

Whether you're short on time, dumbbells, or even a membership, we've got you covered with the best at-home exercises you can do virtually anywhere. I Thought I'd Never Be Able to Run Again - and Then I Tried These Sneakers

When my podiatrist told me I had plantar fasciitis, I was absolutely heartbroken. Running is not just my morning jolt or something I do to stay healthy, it keeps me mentally sane. On days I don't run, I swear my character is affected. You wouldn't want to meet me on a day I didn't run, because I would probably have resting b*tch face.

The next few months were extremely hard for me, and maybe I approached them in the wrong way. Instead of immediately trying physical therapy or making an appointment with a doctor who treated more aggressively, I sulked around in a walking boot (which was just meant to soften the pain) and took up swimming, which I wasn't superfond of.

I didn't end up with plantar fasciitis because I was running too much but because I have a terribly weak right hip, causing my entire leg to drop with each step. I learned this later when I did finally start working with PT specialists who were extremely dedicated to helping me solve my problem and promised me I'd get on the road again.

If you're hurt, one way to stay optimistic is to remind yourself that the body heals itself. It might take awhile, but your pain will not be forever. Nevertheless, you must also be proactive: never end a workout without stretching properly, apply ice and heat to your injuries instead of ignoring them, and, most importantly, research the products you're wearing!

After running in Brooks for years (which is a great shoe, don't get me wrong), I assessed my own problem and realized that in order for my legs to feel light and for me to keep my body balanced on both sides, I had to find a sneaker that was almost completely weightless with a chunky sole, but one that wasn't heavy. Enter HOKA One One.

My first pair was the 2017 Clayton in this exact colorway, which has been discontinued, but replaced with the Clayton 2. I've now moved on to the brand new Clifton 5, which truly makes me feel like I'm running on marshmallows. These sneakers aren't the complete solution, as I mentioned before, but I recommend them wholeheartedly if you've ever felt sluggish or as though you're "dragging" through your route.

Let me show you my favorite styles - both because of structure and, yes, the ridiculously awesome and fun shades - and when you try them, I promise you'll be flying. I'll meet you in the clouds, because you better believe I got my stride back.

5 Changes I Made in My Life to Lose Face Fat and Get Healthy

When I was overweight and unhealthy, there were a lot of things I wanted to change. First and foremost, I wanted to have more energy and feel more like myself so I could go about my life like I used to. But I also wanted to fit into my clothes again, as well as reduce the extra weight that had been added to my face and neck area.

Getting rid of face fat may sound great for someone who wants to lose weight, but the sad truth is, you can't spot-reduce fat anywhere on your body, including (and especially) your face. However, it is possible! You just have to lose weight everywhere so that your hard work eventually reaches your face. These are the five things I did to lose face fat, and feel more confident and healthier than ever.

Yes, Stress Can Kill - Here's How It Affects Your Body If It Goes Unmanaged For Too Long

Many of us have learned to simply accept stress as a normal part of the daily grind. It's almost even become a way we gauge one's work ethic; if you're not stressed, you're probably not doing enough. But as much as it's been ingrained in American culture that stress equates to success, the consequences can truly be life-threatening the longer it goes ignored. To find out how exactly stress can kill, we spoke with Athena Robinson, PhD, clinical psychologist, and chief clinical officer of therapy chatbot and app Woebot.

First, let's define the term. "Stress can be loosely defined as pressure or tension that one can feel emotionally and physically as a result of a situation or their interpretation about a situation," Dr. Robinson told POPSUGAR. And like all emotions, stress can tell us information, whether a deadline is coming down to the wire or you're late to your dinner reservation. In these cases, stress can actually be beneficial as it gives us an adrenaline rush and motivates us to get things done. But here's when it becomes a real issue.

"The trouble comes when someone feels high levels of stress on a chronic basis, especially regarding situations over which they have little or no control," Dr. Robinson said. On a psychological level, being overstressed can lead to conditions like depression, anxiety, and sleep problems. It can also impact your physical health by exacerbating chronic pain and increasing headaches, she explained. When you continue to have high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, Dr. Robinson said it can result in more severe consequences: decreased immune function and bone density, impaired learning and memory, and increased blood pressure. "The rumors are true . . . chronic stress can indeed lead to medical complications such as increased risk of coronary heart disease events and related mortality."

The good news is that the consequences of chronic stress can be reversed if caught in time. Depression, anxiety, and sleep problems can be improved with stress reduction techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness programs, and exercise. However, a physical side effect as severe as a stroke, for example, isn't reversible.

"Nonetheless, now is always a good time to learn how to manage stress if you are in need," she said. "Implementing helpful strategies sooner rather than later may help mitigate the number and severity of consequences you experience later in life."

If you experience the following stress signals, seek ways to effectively manage your stress immediately:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Pressure in chest
  • Shallow breathing
  • Increased body temperature
  • Low energy
  • Clammy hands
  • Feeling down or depressed
  • Repetitive thoughts about one topic
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Increased irritability or short temperedness
  • Increased substance use
