50 Foods, 50 States: The Must-Eat Roadfoods Across America
After four decades traversing the country in search of America's best food, Jane and Michael Stern know a thing or two about eating well on the road. The pair first met as grad students at Yale in 1970, and after they'd earned their diplomas, they decided to pursue their passion for food by hitting the road in search of the best America had to offer. They captured the results in the revered, award-winning Roadfood books, which became the go-to, indispensable guides to the best bites along America's freeways and backroads alike. In 2017, the Sterns marked the series' 40th anniversary.
As lifelong road-trippers, the Sterns have a few pieces of tried-and-true advice when it comes to scoping out a worthy place to stop for a meal - and what to order once you do. "One (somewhat irrational) tip is to look for restaurants with giant statues of whatever it is they serve on the roof: a cow, a chicken, a crab," Michael says. Once you're seated? "Look around at other people's plates. If nine out of 10 customers are all eating the same thing, that's a good indication that there is at least one very alluring regional specialty on the menu."
Before you hit the road this Summer, scope out the Stern's picks for the can't-miss food in every state - and visit Roadfood for even more of their enthusiastic expertise.

What's It Really Like to Get Volume Lash Extensions? Here's the Truth
I have always longed for luscious, full eyelashes. My natural lashes are pretty average - I have enough to work with when it comes to swiping on mascara, but it definitely takes plenty of effort. As more celebrities have started wearing eyelash extensions, I was intrigued by the process. There have been plenty of horror stories when it comes to the service, so I was hesitant to test it out for myself.
I finally decided to give it a try before a month with lots of events and parties I was planning to attend. I went to Yuel Lash Beauty in San Francisco - the technician who owns the business is a Sugarlash PRO brand ambassador, and that's the product brand she used on me for our session. I was nervous heading into my appointment; I had no idea what to expect. Luckily, Yuel was incredibly kind and explained every single thing she was doing as she did it.
I went in for a classic set of eyelash extensions, but Yuel suggested I try a volume set. A classic set is when only one extension is glued to each natural lash. It adds length and thickness and is great for people who already have a fair amount of lashes. Volume lashes are a newer and more innovative technique where multiple extensions are attached to one lash to give more dimension and texture. They provide a fuller look and require more skill. Technicians usually create custom fans of multiple lashes to put on each hair - you can have anywhere from two to six extensions attached to each individual natural lash, depending on how dramatic you want to go.
For my particular lashes, Yuel attached two or three extensions to each natural lash. I wanted a noticeably thicker lash line, but I didn't want it to be distracting when people looked at my face. For a full set, it took about two hours to complete the look. I laid on my back on a comfy bed-like cushion while Yuel sat behind my head. I closed my eyes and she placed silicone pads under my eyes to keep the bottom lashes out of the way. I hardly felt anything while she applied the extensions; I only felt her brushing through the lashes every so often. It's a painless procedure - you just have to lie still.
When she was finished, I audibly gasped when I looked in the mirror. I felt like the volume lash extensions complemented my eyes and looked incredibly natural. Consider me instantly obsessed. The lashes last for about three weeks - I'm currently in my second week, and they still look fantastic. In fact, I just booked an appointment for a fill because now I can't imagine living without them.
If you're thinking about getting extensions, it's important to have all the information before you book your first appointment. Let's break down the pros and cons for you.
The Pros
You don't have to spend as much time getting ready.
Extensions are better than any mascara I have ever used. When I wake up in the morning, I apply foundation and blush - and that's it. I love that my eyes look nice 24/7, and I get to sleep five extra minutes every day.
They make your eyes stand out at all times.
By having my eyelashes always "done," I look polished no matter where I am. I could be running errands with no makeup on or heading to the office with a full face, and I feel confident no matter what.
The volume extensions look so natural.
Compared to a classic set, volume lashes truly look real. The lighter, thinner extensions are so intricately placed that they look perfect even up close. My friends can't get over how real they look.
The Cons
Not all technicians know what they're doing.
I was lucky to have a technician who is trained in extensions - she's a total expert and used the best products and tools possible. Just because you find a great price for extensions doesn't mean it's a deal you should take; cheaper services may use materials that are lower quality. Look for technicians who partner with trusted brands.
Volume lash extensions are more expensive than classic sets.
Because of the precision required and the caliber of extensions being used, volume lashes are obviously going to cost more. You're paying for a better result, so in my opinion, it's worth it.
Maintenance is key to keeping lashes looking good.
Yuel provided me with special lash cleaner and silicone spoolies that I use every night. I clean my lashes and brush them so that they look fanned out and even. If you get lazy and skip your grooming routine, you could agitate your eye or your lashes could clump together. Honestly, maintaining them isn't that big of a deal. I just include it as part of my routine when I wash my face.
Overall, I had an incredibly positive experience getting volume lash extensions. and I will be returning again. I love how they make me feel and how much time they save me. If you're on the fence, I recommend giving them a try.

The 9 Best Texturizing Sprays That Will Give You Model-Off-Duty Hair
If you've always been hesitant to try a texturizing spray on your hair, now is the time to branch out. Summer is great time to experiment with styles without the rain and wind that comes with Winter. Consider the product a marriage between dry shampoo and hairspray - it's meant to revitalize and give your hair a little extra oompf if it's lacking body.
Texturizing spray can be used throughout the day: in the morning to create volume, as a midday pick-me-up to give life to flat hair and even to smell nice (depending on the brand you get, they usually have a perfume-like scent). Just spray it all over (not just at the roots), scrunch or fluff your hair to define it, and you're done. You won't believe how much of a difference it makes - the thickness is visibly noticeable. Take a look at our favorite texturizing sprays and try one for yourself.
I Tested Pricey Products Against Affordable Options - and the Results Might Surprise You
If you can't afford a $500 serum, that would put you with about 99 percent of the population - including me. Although my job grants me the privilege of trying a lot of beauty products for free, I've learned that a heftier price tag doesn't always mean better results. Ahead, find the pricey products I've found are worth your money, coupled with great affordable options if you just can't justify the cost. Cheers to looking great while also being able to pay your electricity bill.
The $26 Blemish Oil That Let Me Skip Foundation For a Full Week
There are some moments in your childhood that you never forget. For me, such landmark memories include meeting my best friend and seeing Colin Farrell's beautiful eyebrows for the first time. I remember my debut breakout less enthusiastically. I was 12, and a group of acne clusters rudely decided to throw a party on my face. The day after, my mother brought me to a Macy's beauty counter, where she introduced me to another cherished friend: Clinique foundation, my OG favorite that I still wear today. Twelve years after first testing it, I still get unwanted breakouts (it never ends, people), and I'm the type of person who doesn't feel super comfortable leaving the house without any base on.
Whoops, I should say I was that kind of person - until this week, when I've been going gloriously makeup-free. Truth be told, I'm testing a lot of new skincare products right now that have brightened up my face in general, but I suspect one reason I'm so comfortable baring my acne-prone face is due to the Blume Meltdown Blemish Treatment ($26). The tiny dropper's packaging promises to "take down pimples overnight," and after reading that, I actually huffed a "yeah, right" to no one in particular in my empty apartment's bathroom. The treatment is a mix of mostly celebrity-approved oils such as rosehip (responsible for Kate Middleton's glow), olive (Chloë Grace Moretz is a fan) and tamanu (many influencers swear by the Farsali iteration). That said, adding oils to a greasy complexion can be somewhat ill-advised, and it's not recommended to treat cystic acne, so I wasn't sure if it would make my face worse.
To be very careful, I used only one drop - not a bit more - for my entire face. It sort of works like the liquid version of an acne patch, sucking the gunk out of your face like a magnet. I went to bed with a little bump forming on my face, and when I woke up the mark was still there, but it looked much less threatening. In less than a week, all active breakouts where gone. I still have some light scarring that I'm treating with other products, but my new complexion is clear enough that I'm willing to trot it around town uncovered. (TMI alert: this formula also works great on stubborn ingrown hairs.) I'll still keep my Clinique base close - I'm not ready to go full Alicia Keys just yet - but it's great to prove the cliche of "feeling comfortable in your own skin" true.
The Quickest Way to Elongate Your Face Is in Your Hairstylist's Hands
No need to layer on the contour: your haircut, color, and style can completely transform your look, so much so that you can even create the illusion of a different face shape.
While there's nothing wrong with having a round face - some of the most beautiful women in Hollywood have round faces, like Chrissy Teigen, Sarah Hyland, and Miranda Kerr - there are steps you can take to make it appear longer, should you so choose. Step one? Book a hair appointment. Salon SCK hairstylist Devin Toth shares exactly what to ask for ahead, so you can experience the styling sorcery for yourself.
We Tried Lucy Hale's Green Eye Shadow and Felt Like Poison Ivy
The 2018 Teen Choice Awards was full of fun beauty moments, but one of my favorites had to be Lucy Hale's green eye shadow. Her makeup artist, Kelsey Deenihan, painted her eyes with vivid Poison Ivy-green shadow, and it was a hit with POPSUGAR Beauty's Instagram followers. So, naturally, I had to test out the look for my weekly Instagram series, Desktop Beauty, where I re-create popular celebrity looks each week.
Now I'll admit - I'm not a green eye shadow type of woman. I hardly wear shadow because I have yet to master blending techniques and looks that work for my particular eye shape. But when I do feel like painting my lids, I always reach for golden and copper hues. This look was definitely not up my everyday-makeup alley. However, once the green shadow was on, it taught me that a little color never killed anybody.

Wedding Planning Experts Say This Is When to Arrive at a Wedding
Wedding experts seem to agree: arriving to a wedding 15 to 30 minutes before the start time stated on the invitation is proper form. Any earlier and you might get in the way; any later and you risk missing the ceremony or worse.
Anne Chertoff, a trend expert from WeddingWire, says 15 minutes prior to the start time is ample unless it's a big wedding. "You may want to arrive 30 minutes before to ensure seats together and in a good spot." Of course, sometimes forces beyond control prevent guests from arriving on time, and you probably have a slight cushion. Jessica Garda, a wedding planner from Pittsburgh, says, "You can't always predict weather, traffic, etc. So I definitely advise couples getting married to plan on starting their ceremony about 15 minutes after the time printed on the invitation, just in case."
Should you arrive late, find a seat quietly in the back so as not to disturb the ceremony. Believe it or not, arriving too early to a wedding can also cause a disturbance. Brett Galley of Hollywood Pop, who has worked with celebrities like Bon Jovi, Diana Ross, and Tony Bennett, cautions against exploring the venue while vendors are still setting up. He also recommends not seeking out the wedding couple. "[They are] most likely busy getting ready, taking photos, and going through prewedding rituals, such as signing the ketubah. Wait outside until the venue is open for guests to be seated."
The bottom line: don't expect everything to go smoothly en route to the venue. Krista Ostrander, wedding specialist at The Reeds at Shelter Haven in Stone Harbor, NJ, says, "It's important to have time to navigate parking and the layout of the property." She suggests allowing a few extra minutes to also feel settled before the ceremony.
When traffic or weather prevents you from being on time, Garda offers this advice: "If [you] are able to let someone know, great. But DO NOT call or text the bride or groom. They have enough to worry about that day."

Why Isn't Election Day a Holiday in America?
As Election Day looms, you're probably hearing a lot about why you need to get your butt to the polls. But, consistently, a huge chunk of the American population fails to do just that - especially in midterm elections. The main reason people historically cite for dodging their civic duty is that it's simply too hard to get away from work and school to cast a ballot. So why, then, do we continue to hold Election Day on a seemingly random Tuesday in November?
Vote.org founder Debra Cleaver said there's a surprising answer - one that it made sense when Congress instituted the rule in 1845, but makes very little sense now, 172 years later. In the mid-1800s, the United States was still largely a society fueled by agriculture. That meant November was a good month to hold the vote, because it was after the harvest, but before Winter weather set in. Okay, but why Tuesday?
"They picked Tuesday because it was the day before farmers had to set up at market, so people would be coming in from the rural areas into town," Cleaver said. "It was the single-most convenient day for the majority of Americans to vote, because people were all in the city centers." Flash forward to 2018, said Cleaver, and that's clearly no longer the case.
Several efforts to change this archaic tradition and establish Election Day as a national holiday have been made over the years, but to no avail. Why is that? Cleaver has a theory: "I don't think elected officials are motivated to increase turnout, because increased turnout increases accountability."
Cleaver isn't even convinced that simply declaring Election Day a national holiday would make great strides to remedy America's low voter turnout. (Only 58 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot in the 2016 presidential election.) "If we simply make Election Day a federal holiday, it will only affect federal employees," she noted. Instead, there are a number of other things we could do to help make voting easier on the electorate, and we need only look at other developed countries - most of which have higher voter turnout rates than we do - for clues. Here are a few examples:
- In countries like Denmark, Sweden, and Iceland, voter registration is linked to national population records. In other words: you're automatically registered to vote. (Speaking of, if you're not 100 percent positive you're registered to vote, take a few seconds and confirm your voter registration status here.)
- In countries like Belgium and Australia, voting is compulsory - meaning that if you don't participate, you could face a fine.
- In many developed countries - including Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, Germany, and France, just to name a few - voting takes place on weekends or holidays.
Only about half of US states have laws protecting the rights of workers to take unpaid time off - key word: unpaid --to vote on Election Day. For many people, especially employees who are paid hourly, the choice to go to work instead of to their polling place doesn't feel like much of a choice at all.
Cleaver said that, for most Americans, it's their boss who ultimately controls whether they can realistically take time away to vote. So even though we may have the legal right to exercise our voting privileges, it's reasonable that many people are too intimidated to ask to use it. This fact unfortunately serves to make populations marginalized by factors like socioeconomic status even less likely to make their voices heard via their votes.
That's why Cleaver and Vote.org launched ElectionDay.org, a special project to enlist companies to hold themselves accountable when it comes to making voting a priority. To date, more than 150 companies - including Patagonia, Lyft, Kaiser Permanente, and Pinterest - have signed ElectionDay.org's pledge to give workers paid time off to vote on Election Day this November.
Cleaver said she's been heartened by the response, and isn't above appealing to corporate self-interest in making her case to business leaders. "Low voter turnout increases the likelihood that radical candidates win and radical candidates bring with them radical policies that hurt business," she noted, pointing to the current trade war with China, which is causing headaches for businesses across several industries. "Democracy is good for business."

We Tried Guy Fieri's New Chicken Restaurant at Disney World, and Holy Flavortown
Guy Fieri is introducing Disney World to Flavortown with a new restaurant. Chicken Guy! - exclamation point included - is now open in Orlando's Disney Springs next to Planet Hollywood. The fast-casual restaurant's specialty is, you guessed it, chicken. The menu has grilled chicken, fried chicken, tenders, sandwiches, and salads, plus sides including fried pickles, mac 'n' cheese, french fries, and slaw. The chicken tenders are brined in fresh lemon juice, pickle brine, and buttermilk and are infused with fresh herbs and "hand-pounded to maximize crunch," according to the press release. I recently visited Chicken Guy! and can confirm the chicken is indeed crunchy and incredibly tasty.
"I'm stoked to be building Chicken Guy! with my friend Robert Earl," Fieri said in a statement. "It's all about the real deal, all-natural chicken. But lemme tell you, our sauce game is on point." He's definitely right about the "sauce game." You'll find 22 different sauces for your dipping pleasure, including Chipotle Ranch, Curry Mayo, Lemon Pepper, Garlic Parmesan, Avocado Crema, Nashville Hot Honey, and Sweet Sriracha BBQ. The restaurant has an approachable price point, too. Each individual menu item is priced at $8 or less, and the only thing higher than that is the combo for $11.
In addition to the main and side items, there are ice cream creations for dessert, including cinnamon-apple and chocolate-mint treats. Take a look ahead to see what you can expect from Chicken Guy!, and plan on stopping by before your next Disney World trip.

Rack your brain, and you probably can't think of one outfit Meghan Markle has worn that didn't suit her perfectly. She makes a turtleneck look chic, she's classic in a v-neck, and she can even dress up a typically laid-back crew neckline in true princess style. But there's one particular neckline Meghan has been wearing over and over since joining the royal family: the bateau neckline. She wore the style for the royal wedding, at Trooping the Colour, and at a number of other important royal engagements.
Nevertheless, we're here to prove that Meghan's not afraid of incorporating other silhouettes. These Are the Boots That Will Look Best With Your New Fall Jeans
Jeans and boots are probably the most classic Fall outfit we can think of. But as we know from experience, not every jean goes with every boot, and it takes a little bit of patience to achieve that effortlessly styled look. No matter if you love combat boots, sock boots, Western boots, or sleek pointed-toe boots, they can all be styled to make a statement with your wardrobe's best friend, jeans.
The classic combo can be broken down into two main categories: either you're tucking your jeans into your boots or you're letting them hang over the boots. If it's the former, you want to make sure the ankle on the boot isn't too tight and that it comes up high enough so there's no awkward space between the hem of your jeans and the top of your boot. If it's the latter, it's actually better to have a boot that's more fitted at the ankle, so it doesn't look bulky underneath the pants. However you like to style your jeans, there's a chic boot that will make them look elevated and cool. Just keep reading to shop our picks!

You have to eat clean to remove subcutaneous fat and reveal the muscles below, but did you know that abs can also be built in your living room? If you're not working out your core, you won't get that six-pack.
We teamed up with Sarah Chadwell, NASM, CPT, a certified trainer, to bring you a 10-move workout you can do at home and with no equipment.

I like to put the names of 10 to 20 exercises on strips of paper and draw five or six of them out of a bowl for a surprise routine each day. It keeps abs-day interesting and varied," said Chadwell. Here are her favorite exercises.
Posh Spice Was Known For the Slinky Black Dress, but Then Hailey Baldwin Came Along
Hailey Baldwin had to be thinking of Posh Spice when she made plans to wear this LBD for a night out with friends in New York. Even if she hadn't imagined Victoria Beckham's '90s alter ego at first, there's no way she didn't think, "Hey, I kind of look like a Spice Girl," when she looked in the mirror before heading out the door. The 21-year-old supermodel, who is set to marry Justin Bieber, accessorized her own slinky Réalisation Par number ($160), which she also owns in white, with chunky gold hoops and a structured leather bag.
Rather than strappy stilettos or patent Mary Janes made for dancing, like VB wore in her early days, Hailey slipped into a very unexpected shoe: the suede mule. Her own modern touch, perhaps? What made Posh's "little Gucci dress" so iconic were the superthin spaghetti straps that just barely seemed to hold up the fabric of the design, and Hailey's piece followed suit. Ahead, we shopped for similar styles that you can choose to rock with any type of footwear you like - even sneakers, à la Emily Ratajkowski. Regardless, when you're wearing a mini like this one, we promise you'll step outside mouthing the lyrics to "Wannabe." How could you not?

She discussed her favorite songs and gave the audience a little live snippet of "R.E.M", as well as sharing the story behind "Breathin", which is about her struggles with anxiety.
But Ariana didn't just give us viewers an album party, she also spoke about her relationship with fiancé Pete Davidson. Her new album has a song named "Pete" and the 25-year-old said she wrote the song just a week after the pair started hanging out. Videos and GIFs, like the ones on POPSUGAR Fitness, will be helpful to guide your next workout and be sure you are doing it properly.
And it's not just form that's key; Jillian wants to be sure that everyone has the proper gear, such as appropriate footwear and clothing, to avoid shin splints and blisters.

Do Air Squats Burn Fat? Here's What Trainers Had to Say
Air squats seem to be the favorite bodyweight exercise for HIIT classes and other boutique fitness studios. Since you use no other equipment except your body, air squats are supposed to help you tone your legs, build a booty, and torch lower-body fat. But are these promises too good to be true? (Spoiler alert: squats alone won't transform your butt.)
We asked personal trainers the truth about air squats and whether or not they are actually an effective exercise. If you're embarking on a squat challenge and busting out dozens of air squats a day, will you see any results? Here's what the experts had to say.
Air Squats Are a Beginner Move
For more advanced gym-goers, air squats may seem like a waste of time, especially if you're able to sidle up to the squat rack and take on 150 pounds. But for beginners, air squats can be a great place to start.
Personal trainer and dietitian Jim White, RD, ACSM health fitness specialist, and owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, recommended people start out with air squats before advancing on to other squat variations.
"Air squats are the beginner squat; they help to ensure that your squat form is correct in order to avoid injuries," he told POPSUGAR. "As the person advances and the air squats become easier, they should try regular squats and jump squat intervals because it will keep their heart rate high and in the anaerobic part of their workout. Then weights should be added to the squats that will lead to more calories being burned as well as increasing the BMR (basal metabolic rate) and cardiovascular for burning a higher amount of fat."
Using Your Bodyweight Is a Functional Movement
Some people may be so into weightlifting that they dismiss bodyweight moves and neglect the importance of functional movement for not only muscle building but overall fitness. Certified personal trainer Kendall Janicola, NCSF and instructor at Fhitting Room in New York City, told POPSUGAR that air squats are a functional movement with a "plethora of benefits," even if you just use your bodyweight.
White agreed that squats are an essential move for overall fitness. "Squats are one of the most intense exercises you can do," he said. "They work out the complete lower body for an intense metabolism boost." He said that while air squats are a good place to start, you should move on to adding weights to keep boosting your metabolism and burning fat.
So, Do Air Squats Actually Burn Fat?
This answer is a little complicated since you can't spot-target fat loss. If you're looking to lose fat in your lower body, doing an endless number of squats alone won't get you there. You need to lose weight overall to burn fat, and this is done by eating in a calorie deficit and working out. Ultimately, your genetic makeup determines where fat is lost on your body.
However, air squats can help get you there. White said air squats can help you burn fat, but they may not be as effective as other squats, such as squats with barbells or jump squat intervals. Janicola agreed.
"Air squats can and absolutely do burn fat and build lean muscle," she told POPSUGAR. "If you're new to weight training, the air squat is the perfect place to start to turn on those muscles and learn the right technique to get things going." However, you can only do so many air squats for so long before you'll eventually plateau, in which case you should add weight to burn fat, build muscle, and get stronger.
In short: yes, they burn fat, but you shouldn't rely on them as an exercise that will burn leg fat and build your butt muscles. Combined with other strength-training moves, bodyweight exercises, and functional movement, they can help you shed fat and sculpt muscle. Just don't expect that doing 100 air squats a day will magically transform your body (or your booty) - eventually, you'll have to pick up some weights.
How This Practice Can Prevent You From Binge Eating and Help You Lose Weight
You're snacking on a bag of chips while watching a show. You look down at the end of the episode and realize that you've just eaten the entire bag. Or even if it's not that extreme, maybe you simply don't remember what you ate for breakfast today. It may not seem like a big deal, but it could cause you to unwittingly make bad food choices and/or overeat. That's where mindful eating comes in.
Mindfulness encourages you to be more present and aware of your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations. When this concept is applied to food, it encourages you to be more conscious of what you're putting into your body (as well as environmental sustainability) and to be more in tune with your body's cues (aka whether you're hungry or full). Dr. Lilian Cheung, a nutritionist and lecturer at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told Harvard Health that "mindless eating" could be contributing to our national obesity epidemic. On an individual level, being more mindful when you eat can improve your relationship with food and serve as an effective long-term weight-loss solution.
The whole idea is to pay attention to not only what you eat and how much, but what you buy and how you prepare it as well. In doing so, you become much more appreciative of food and you're less likely to overindulge. According to Healthline, it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to realize that you're full. So instead of scarfing down your dinner, chew and eat slowly and free your table of any distractions. This means not responding to texts until you're finished eating, not scrolling through Instagram as you eat, and not eating in front of a TV.
According to the Center For Mindful Eating, the practice consists of the following:
- "Allowing yourself to become aware of the positive and nurturing opportunities that are available through food selection and preparation by respecting your own inner wisdom."
- "Using all your senses in choosing to eat food that is both satisfying to you and nourishing to your body."
- "Acknowledging responses to food (likes, dislikes, or neutral) without judgment."
- "Becoming aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decisions to begin and end eating."
Apply this practice starting with your next meal!
