Johnny Bananas on How The Challenge Has Changed, His New Gig, and That Infamous Money Grab
Image Source: Getty / Tom Briglia / WireImage
You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who "sort of" likes The Challenge. The MTV series has earned a steadfast fan base over its 32 seasons on the air, thanks to death-defying stunts, clever twists, and an ever-growing cast of characters. No matter how many bizarre aerial challenges MTV's team comes up with, though, it's that last thing that keeps people coming back: the players. And among those champs is the crowned king, Johnny "Bananas" Devenanzio. Since making his debut on The Duel in 2006 - he memorably went home in the first episode - Bananas has appeared on 17 seasons, winning six of them.
Bananas is taking on a new endeavor as the latest host of NBC's late-night series, 1st Look, this Fall. The show airs every weekend after Saturday Night Live, and I got the chance to chat with him ahead of the premiere. And, well, I couldn't not ask about The Challenge, right? After all, Final Reckoning is in full swing! I had to know if he feared a certain someone from his past would return as his partner. How could I live with myself if I didn't get his honest opinion on Devin? What kind of journalist would I be if I didn't ask if he ever wanted to replace TJ Lavin as the host?!
Please enjoy this extra-long interview with Johnny Bananas, and catch him on 1st Look in September.
POPSUGAR: You've done some pretty uncomfortable challenges on MTV. Has there been anything you've had to do for 1st Look that really put you outside of your comfort zone?
Johnny Bananas: How about every single second I've shot so far? When I first got the job, they were like, "We're going to have difficulty finding segments to get you out of your comfort zone." And I was like, "You most likely are because I've pretty much done everything under the sun." Well, I didn't know that they had this group of crackpot, crazy people that were literally going to think so outside of the box and find ways and things to do to really put me outside of my comfort zone.
I had to dress in drag and strip and perform a whole burlesque act at a club in Hollywood. I had to go to a smell laboratory in Kansas City where they test deodorants, foot powders, that sort of thing, and I had to smell sweaty armpits and sweaty feet, yeah, to calibrate my nose. I got my ass handed to me by a bunch of NFL football players last week. I was in a haunted house. I didn't believe in ghosts before going in. I most certainly do now. I think one of the spirits followed me home. I just made the Rams' cheerleading squad the other day.
PS: You must get so many random opportunities coming your way: What made you say yes to this one?
JB: I actually pitched a very similar show idea to MTV a while ago. It was going to be me going around the world entering myself in crazy, zany, off-the-wall competitions and challenges and then competing in them. MTV obviously wasn't really hot on it, but then NBC comes along and they offered me this hosting job for essentially a show idea that is very similar to the one that I pitched. It's like a dream come true. I am working, but at the same time I'm getting to do what I love and I'm hanging out with some of the best athletes in the world. I got to go to Roswell, NM, and look for the crashed alien spaceship and interview abductees. I'm getting all these amazing experiences.
PS: We've been watching you on The Challenge for 17 seasons, and thinking that maybe eventually you'd be the host! Is that something that you'd ever hoped would happen?
JB: Absolutely, I've been letting them know for a while now that hosting is the next move I want to make. The thing is, TJ has become synonymous with The Challenge and as much as I think I would be possibly a great host for the show, that's TJ's thing. Now, if he ever moves on, retires, whatever, I would happily step into that role. The other issue I can imagine is - let's be real - over the 17 seasons, I've made a lot of enemies on the show. I don't know how the cast would react to me being the host. Even though I would have zero dogs in the fight, they would probably still think that there's conspiracies going around and I'm still trying to manipulate the game. Which . . . I probably would do.
PS: Can we expect any Johnny Bananas pranks on Final Reckoning?
JB: I had so much on my plate the entire season that there really was zero time for levity or jokes. Of all the seasons I've done, this was, from a mental standpoint, the most difficult thing I've ever experienced in my life. This one is brutal.
PS: Do you mean with the interpersonal relationships or with the challenges themselves?
"What a lot of people don't understand is this isn't something that happened overnight - it's taken 17 seasons, and 13 long years."
JB: Everything. The house dynamics, the relationships, the lack of relationships - at least in my opinion. I think there has been a disturbing trend over the past few seasons where I've gone from the guy no one really wanted to vibe with to the guy who is public enemy number one from day one. It's become me versus the entire house. That's the way that this season goes down, and it's going to be a pretty amazing thing to watch the house versus the immovable object.
PS: Some might say that that's a direct result of what you've done to castmates in the past. Do you think part of it is your actions, or do you think a lot of it is production whispering into their ears, "Hey, let's make this a vendetta?"
JB: No, it's not production at all. That's another misconception about The Challenge: [viewers] think that it's scripted, and it's not. Reality is stranger than fiction. You couldn't write the stuff that goes down. You just couldn't. It's all cast member animosity towards me. Some of it is stuff that I've created on my own with certain people, but then there's also envy and jealousy there, too. They see where I am, and who I am, and what I've become, and the brand that I've created, and the following that I have.
What a lot of people don't understand is this isn't something that happened overnight - it's taken 17 seasons, and 13 long years. I think a lot of people don't realize that it takes hard work, and it can't be taken from me. A lot of the young guys think, "Well, if we go head-to-head against Bananas, it's a guaranteed storyline and camera-time. It's upsetting that that's a route they can take now. I think, "OK. Yeah. You can spar against me, and get rid of me, but dimming my flame isn't going to make yours any brighter."

PS: The problem becomes that we get a season full of people who aren't established personalities and aren't that interesting yet, who just think maybe it would be a good thing to get the big players off early. And then the season isn't as good.
JB: That's the thing. I guess maybe this is why I've been as successful as I have been, and why I'm not just a fan favorite, but a favorite with production: I know what's going to be good for the show. I put my producer's hat on, so it's almost like I'm a producer first and a cast member second. Even though I might dislike a person, I know what's good for television. For example, when me and CT had our rivalry, I thought, "God, I want to get him out of here." But at the same time, it's like, "But damn, he's so important to the show. And he's so important to our viewers. He's so important for ratings." I have to put my personal [issues] aside for the sake of it being a good episode. These [new] guys are all thinking in the moment. They're not thinking long-term. If you get rid of all of [the vets], no one's going to watch. And then what's going to happen? Ratings are going to suffer, and what happens if The Challenge isn't even renewed?
PS: One person who's been super polarizing is Devin. What are your feelings on him at this point?
JB: Devin is 100 percent an opportunist. He brings nothing to the show physically or strategically. Devin is not a player in the game, he is one of the pawns. The way he sees it is, "If I go after Bananas, and if I start this big Bananas-Devin rivalry, then I'm going to get a storyline," which is exactly what happened last season. Devin knows that without me, he doesn't exist. Devin's not the first one to come at me; there's been Jordan and even Tony. The difference, though, is he's doing it strictly for camera-time and to try and make a name for himself.
PS: Social media seems to have changed the game. Have you noticed that the show has been different since cast members have started picking fights off-screen?
JB: There's more drama off the show on social media than there is on the show. It's all the time, so the show never really ends. I keep my inner circle, because that's the problem you run into that transfers over on the show. I spend so much time with the cast members [onscreen], I just don't want to be friends with them off the show. The Challenge has come back in such a big way, and so many people want to be on the show now. It used to be just MTV franchises, but now you see people from Big Brother and The Bachelor. It's a lot of people wanting [to be] on the show, knowing that, "Hey, if I can start a rivalry via social media with whoever, this might increase my odds of being noticed and being cast on the show."
PS: How do you feel about MTV bringing in people from other networks?
JB: It's a double-edged sword. I can see both sides: I like the idea because it's bringing new eyeballs to The Challenge, but it's also diluting the show. The problem is, you don't have the same pool to choose from; there's no Road Rules, and Real World is off the air. They're going to need real people to bring in. How do they do that? It's above my pay grade. All I can do is just continue to be true to who I am and keep stirring the pot.
PS: Did any part of you think maybe your vendetta this season might be Sarah?
JB: Yeah. I did. Sarah went through my head, Wes went through my head, Tony obviously did. Devin was originally supposed to be my partner. That most certainly crossed my mind, but I guess Sarah has moved on.
PS: As far as you know, is she just done with the show entirely?
JB: Yeah. I think what happened with that money grab really affected her. I think she put a lot false blame on production for it happening. She was as responsible for that happening as anybody else. There's a lot of things she could have done differently in that final. She shouldn't have trusted me as much as she did. She really shouldn't have. She should have known that regardless of what I said and the way that I acted, I am who I am. It's almost like you can try as hard as you want to domesticate a wild animal, but you can't be shocked when they bite you because at the end of the day, this still is a wild animal.
She tried to say that production set her up, and then she tried to say that I cheated and all this other stuff. So I think there's a lot of that going on as well where she's just kind of still, I don't know. I think Sarah has a tremendous amount of animosity toward the entire franchise, so I honestly can't see Sarah ever coming back. I just really can't. I wish her the best of luck, but I think we've probably seen the last of her.
PS: Yeah. Is that a decision you would still stand by today?
JB: Oh, 100 percent. I've never once looked at my bank account and been like, you know what? I wish there was $275,000 less dollars in here. Yeah. I stand by it.
Idris Elba's Fiancée Totally Upstaged Him at His Latest Premiere, and We're Not Mad About It
Idris Elba made an appearance in London on Tuesday for the premiere of his new film Yardie, and he brought his stunning fiancée Sabrina Dhowre along as his date. Though it was technically Idris's night to shine, he seemed happy to let his leading lady take the spotlight. After all, she was the one all dressed up in a dramatic off-the-shoulder blue gown, while Idris was more chilled out in a hooded sweater and sneakers. Perhaps the actor is just keeping things casual for fear of stirring up more James Bond rumors by wearing a suit or tux?
Either way, we were excited to see him showing off the future Mrs. Elba, and looking so happy to be with her. He's previously been pretty secretive about his relationships, but Sabrina's accompanied him to a number of high-profile events over recent months, and this is clearly a love that they can't help but share with the world. Keep reading to see all the photos from the night.
This Mom Turns Grainy, Black-and-White Sonograms Into Jaw-Dropping Works of Art
With both of my pregnancies, I eagerly arrived at the doctor's office for my ultrasound appointments only to feel completely disconnected from the image on the computer screen. Yes, it was the clearest shot I could get of the baby growing inside of me, but it was a grainy, black-and-white blob. (Or, with my second, a grainy black-and-white alien blob.)
If only I had known about Laura Steerman, an Irish mom of three who creates abstract sonogram paintings for parents. Although she doesn't consider herself a professional artist - she's a lawyer by trade - her now-successful business started as not even a hobby, but a moment of catharsis.
"It's emotional painting babies in the womb for families. No two experiences or babies are the same."
"I began by painting my own daughter's scans after several reduced movement scares," she told POPSUGAR. "Each scan showed she was doing just fine despite the lack of kicks, but I felt the gray, blurry images just didn't do her precious self justice. So I took out the paints at my kitchen table at home and got painting."
Soon, friends noticed her work and asked her to paint their children's ultrasound images as well. It wasn't long before she began taking official commissions as part of her business, Quaint Baby Bespoke Ultrasound Art. But, of course, it's not about the money.
"It sounds corny, but it feels like doing these paintings fed the soul," she told us, noting that just because sonograms might all look alike to some, she finds each one unique. "It's emotional painting babies in the womb for families. I have met so many wonderful people who have shared their stories with me. No two experiences or babies are the same."
Laura only accepts copies of sonograms ("I don't take originals as they're too precious!") for custom requests, often has a quick two-week turnaround, and ships worldwide. She explained that parents tend to ask for a painting that depicts their unborn baby's personality.
Some moms say theirs is active, always kicking, and "those babies are painted with vibrant, bold colors with plenty of movement." On the contrary, more placid fetuses tend to get pastels and gentle paint strokes. And even others ask that the painting fit a nursery motif or be a complete surprise.
In addition to the more typical, memory-making commissions, she has painted the sonograms of unborn babies who already had life-affirming experiences before they were even born. For instance, one client came to her with an ultrasound taken immediately after the mom-to-be breathed in fumes following the Brussels airport bombing in 2016. Both mom and baby were fine, and the culminating piece "represented the joy of travel, undeterred by fear and hatred in the world," Laura said.
"A lot of moms are stunned to remember that baby grew in their tummy and they shared this remarkable time so closely together."
She painted the scan of a woman who "found out she had uterine cancer while pregnant, which is what saved her and her rainbow baby's life." She even painted the scan of a baby who was lost during pregnancy, and it served as a touching memorial to the mother who would never get another image of her child. It also inspired Laura to collaborate with Irish charity Féileacáin, which supports parents who've suffered miscarriages - so now, a percentage of every painting's proceeds is donated to the organization.
Her goodwill doesn't end there. Just recently, she'd read about Nicole Taylor, a mother who found out from a scan that she was expecting identical twins who both had Down syndrome - the odds are less than two in a million - and surprised her with a painting of her two beautiful girls.
Still, even as she turns otherwise cold, stark three-inch-by-five-inch sonograms into jaw-dropping works of art, Laura attributes the global rave reviews to the subject matter itself.
"That's why the paintings have become so widely shared," she told POPSUGAR. "It's capturing memories, emotions, personalities, and parenthood in a painting. A lot of moms are stunned to remember that baby grew in their tummy and they shared this remarkable time so closely together."
She added, quite modestly, "It's their baby and their masterpiece."
Read on for a sample of Laura's beautiful work.

This Is Why You Recognize Peter in To All the Boys I've Loved Before
Netflix's teen rom-com To All The Boys I've Loved Before is definitely one of the hottest streaming titles of the year. Its charming leading man, Florida-born actor Noah Centineo, won our hearts as Peter, a sweet, popular lacrosse player who agrees to help protagonist Lara Jean in her romantic high jinks. Have you been rewatching the trailer, trying to figure out where you've seen Centineo before? Turns out he's been a staple on your screens for longer than you think.
Like so many of your favorites, Centineo got his start with the Mouse. He began with small roles on established Disney sitcoms such as Austin and Ally, Shake It Up, and Jessie. Although these roles lasted only one to three episodes each, they were definitely enough to get Centineo on the radar. He got upgraded to leading man status as the love interest Jaden in the network's 2014 original comedy movie How to Build a Better Boy.
TV fans will definitely recognize Centineo from his next and most famous role: Jesus Adams Foster on the Freeform drama series The Fosters (above, in 2016). Centineo did not originate the role: for the first two seasons of the show, the role of Jesus was played by Jake T. Austin. When Austin left the show in 2015, Centineo stepped in, and continued to portray the character for the remaining three seasons. Fans of the recent rom-com SPF-18 might remember Centineo as the crushable fan favorite Johnny. He's not just a comedy guy, though - he plays tutor Hawk on the cyber-thriller series T@gged.
If you still can't get enough of Centineo, then you're in luck! He's slated to appear in several films over the next year or so. Aside from To All the Boys I've Loved Before, he's also been cast in the upcoming teen-comedy retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, and as the romantic lead in the dating-app comedy The Stand-In. Sounds like he'll be stealing hearts for a while to come!
The End of the F***ing World is Returning For a Second Season
Netflix debuted a new drama on Jan. 5 with The End of the F***ing World, a dark comedy about two misfit teens who go on a road trip. The girl, Alyssa, thinks they're trying to find her father, but the boy, James, has another idea in mind - at the end of the journey, he plans to kill her.
It's a dark show, to be sure, though not as dark as the description might have you believe. But what viewers have most been wondering about is whether there will be a second season, especially as the season one finale ended on a massive, vague cliffhanger.
The good news is that Netflix has just announced that a new season is on its way! Charlie Covell, who wrote the first season, is on board once again, which means more of the same twisted comedy is coming our way soon.
But what can we expect from season 2? Well, let's start with a recap as to where we're left off.
Warning: spoilers ahead for season one.
In season one, after James and Alyssa find her father (who turns out to be a real scumbag), they end up breaking into a house because they don't have any real plans or path forward. When the house's occupant surprises them, he attacks Alyssa and James kills the man while protecting her. They go on the run, eventually being caught by the authorities.
James confesses to the murder and says Alyssa had nothing to do with it, but she decides to protect James this time and knocks out DC Noon so James can escape. He in turn hits Alyssa so she can't run away, and as he flees across the beach, a shot rings out and the show cuts to black.
This scenario easily lends itself to a second season. Who got shot? Was it James? Or was it Alyssa shooting one of the police officers? There are a lot of ways the show could go with that. It could keep the two teens on the run together, or it could see them both captured, or it could have James arrested and Alyssa feeling responsible and trying to bust him out. The possibilities are endless.
IT WAS SO F***ING GOOD AND I NEED SEASON 2 PLEASE
- Natalia (@spookynazi) January 5, 2018
@TEOTFW I'm gonna need a season 2 asap pls
- kay (@xkaysav) January 5, 2018
On Reddit, one user said the comic ends a little differently to the show, with James definitely sacrificing himself to save Alyssa. So there isn't any source material with which to continue the show, but there are plenty of ideas out there.
One poster floats the idea of there being a time jump of two years, so the show catches up with the two kids after they've finished school and are now backpacking through Europe together. Of course, that doesn't resolve the cliffhanger, but it's a nice idea. Another user suggests the second season pick up with them making it to the boat they were going to escape on in season one and continuing from there.
Of course, there are a few viewers out there who didn't want a second season and enjoyed the ambiguity of the season one finale. "I hope they don't have a second series as good as it was, I think the ending is quite fitting and poetic," one Reddit poster wrote. And a Twitter user said:
I want a season 2 for #TEOTFW but I also want to kind of leave the end at that.
- Kit Snicket (@sncktfiles) January 5, 2018
Though not everyone was prepared for this story to continue, one thing's for sure: there won't be any shortage of viewers for it!

This Is Where Princess Diana Died, and It's Still Filled With Loving Tributes to Her Memory
Two decades on from her death, the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, still lingers. This Summer, thousands of people will leave tributes to her at the Pont de l'Alma in Paris, near the spot where the princess was badly injured in a car crash leading to her passing just hours later. Flowers and photos lie 'round the famous torch, which has become a memorial to the much-loved royal who died in the French capital on Aug. 31, 1997.
Diana spent her last day in Paris, flying in from Sardinia with Dodi Al Fayed on Aug. 30. The couple had been holidaying on the French and Italian Riviera aboard his father's yacht, the Jonikal, their every move followed by photographers. They headed to the Ritz Hotel, located on the central Place Vendome and also owned by Dodi's father, Mohammed al Fayed. By the time they settled into a late dinner, the famous hotel was surrounded by crowds and press. Just after midnight, with a decoy car diverting photographers at the front of the Ritz, they got into a black Mercedes Benz S280 waiting for them at the back to travel to another Fayed property in Paris.
The deputy head of security at the Ritz, Henri Paul, was at the wheel as the car left the Rue Cambon and crossed the Place de la Concorde. Photographers were already following as the vehicle headed along the Cours la Reine, running alongside the Seine, and continued along the embankment. The car was speeding as it entered the Pont de l'Alma tunnel where, within seconds, it had collided with the 13th pillar. Henri and Dodi were killed instantly.
The princess was still conscious, and the ambulance called to take her to hospital traveled slowly through the French capital to allow doctors to treat her. It stopped for several minutes in front of the Jardin des Plantes for medics to treat the princess. Soon afterward, they arrived at the Pitié-Salpetrière Hospital on the Ile de France, where the full extent of Diana's injuries was discovered. Diana had suffered a large tear to the superior pulmonary vein where it entered her heart. She was pronounced dead at the hospital just after 4 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 31.
Her sister, Lady Sarah McCorquadale, traveled to Paris with Prince Charles to accompany Diana's body home. Even as they landed at RAF Northolt, floral tributes were being left at Diana's home at Kensington Palace. The princess's coffin was taken to London and the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace, where her sons, William and Harry, said their last farewells before her funeral at Westminster Abbey on Sept. 6. Diana's hearse was showered with flowers as thousands lined her funeral route. Her last journey ended at her family home, Althorp House, where she was buried on a small island. Her grave is private and only accessible to family, but public tributes continue to pile up in Paris at the place her story came to an end.
Tiffany Haddish is Getting Her Own Netflix Comedy Special, and It's About Time
Get the popcorn ready, because Tiffany Haddish is set to film an hour-long comedy special for Netflix. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will tape in early 2019, so we may have to wait a little while to stream it, but we're pretty sure it will be worth the wait. Tiffany has ruled the world of entertainment over the past couple of years with numerous movie roles, hosting gigs, and some very memorable TV interviews, but as she told POPSUGAR back in June, "My happy place is on stage." This latest comedy special will follow She Ready, which aired on Showtime in the Summer of 2017.
This is not Tiffany's only Netflix project currently in the works. She's also joining fellow comedian Ali Wong (who also has a Netflix special or two to her name) to voice one of the lead characters in Tuca & Bertie, an animated comedy from the people behind BoJack Horseman.

Kim Kardashian is riding a neon vibe, and no one can stop her. After having stepped out in a yellow Versace dress, followed by a hot pink Chanel bodysuit and a bright green wedding guest outfit, the 37-year-old star once again opted for a vibrant color scheme when she attended an event in LA.
For the occasion, the mom-of-three wore a skintight bubble-gum pink mini dress by Versace, which she paired with PVC Yeezy heels and black sunglasses. The best part of her outfit, however, was her adorable and incredibly sparkly French fries clutch by Judith Leiber. Read on to get a closer look of Kim's look, and then shop her exact clutch, as well as similar options, for yourself.
If I'd Had Travis Scott's Upside-Down Von Dutch Hat in Middle School, I Would've Felt So Cool
When I was in middle school, I wanted a Von Dutch hat so badly that I dragged my mom to the corner boutique and insisted we buy the last one it had in stock. It was poop brown. "Do you really want that color, though? All the ones you showed me were pink and purple and pretty," she said. But I did want it. I needed my Von Dutch hat to be authentic, even though $50 was a ridiculous price to pay for a trucker cap. And so I owned one in poop brown. Then I bought the "fake" version in pink with my allowance, which probably only set me back like $25.
But Travis Scott won, because Travis Scott has an UPSIDE-DOWN Von Dutch hat, and I don't care what year it is. He wore it to the MTV VMAs, sitting by Kylie Jenner's side, cooly displaying his camo accessory in the audience. It's actually a piece from LA-based designer Bana Bongolan, whom Scott has publicly supported before, thereby helping to sell out the upside-down Von Dutch masterpiece instantly. So I can't have it. But I bet you Kylie can.
After all, in 2016, Kylie had a brief Spring/Summer phase when she tried to bring back Von Dutch. She posted at least three selfies in various items from the brand that garnered attention on social media. These days, nostalgia is all the rage (hello, The Hills is coming back and Gigi Hadid is wearing bell bottoms straight out of old Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen movies!), so I can imagine Kylie and Travis bringing back the look with glee. In fact, I really bet you baby Stormi has a Von Dutch onesie. And I'm most jealous of that.
Read on to see Travis and Kylie in Von Dutch, and even shop a few statement truckers for yourself!

Day Care Told Parents to Dress Daughter More "Girlie" - Their Response Was Pitch-Perfect
When Jessica Rold picked up her infant daughter from day care, she wasn't surprised that the childcare workers wanted to speak to her - they often had updates, whether it was about a fussy mealtime or a new milestone she'd hit. But according to Jessica's husband, Steve, the day care had something more unexpected to discuss.
"The teachers at daycare told her we should really be dressing her more like a girl," he wrote on Reddit. He told POPSUGAR that some of the older teachers also "made suggestions" that the baby should wear dresses and have bows in her hair "so that other kids would know that she was a girl."
Still, Steve said he wasn't offended.
"Maybe they just didn't want to answer a million questions from the other kids at day care as to why our baby wasn't dressed in pink."
"Perhaps they thought that it hadn't crossed our minds to dress our daughter any differently, or maybe they just didn't want to answer a million questions from the other kids at day care as to why our baby wasn't dressed in pink," he said, noting that most of his daughter's clothes are hand-me-downs from their 2-year-old son. "The suggestion was actually pretty mild, but it was piled onto a hundred other similar ones from other people, so my wife felt the need to push back a bit."
And that she did. Although she wasn't overtly offended, she was determined to show the "humor inherent in the situation."
The next day, she brought her daughter back to day care in her usual clothes - which happened to include a blue button-up hoodie - along with a unique accessory. Jessica, an artist, drew a bow onto a Post-it note and affixed it to her baby's forehead.
They maintain that their day care is "amazing" but are happy that their statement is getting exposure in terms of gender norms.
"For whatever reason, it seems people feel more comfortable making suggestions for girls," Steve noted. "Perhaps this is because they are trying to be protective, or maybe it's because of some unfortunate societal tenet that makes people feel they have a bit more dominion over girls."
Whatever it is, the Rolds certainly did their part to remind others that their baby is dressed fine, sticky-paper bow or not.
Even This Kid Knows His Mom's Handmade First-Day-of-School Sign Is Peak Laziness
For a lot of moms these days, the first day of school isn't just an educational milestone for their children - it's a photo op for their Instagram feeds. But while they are busy dusting off their letter boards (or personalized chalkboards) to create the perfect memory, Lindsay Sutton took, well, a different, less-busy approach.
This week, the blogger behind Essentially Momming, whose 6-year-old son Lincoln was heading off to first grade, posted her version of that popular portrait to Facebook. Instead of including a laundry list of stats about his favorite subject, the exact number of teeth he has, or how he wants to be a garbage man when he grows up, she snapped a photo of him holding a piece of copier paper with the words, "1st Grade: My Mom Forgot to Make a Sign" scrawled across it.
Even better than the lazy approach to the sign, however, was Lincoln's unimpressed, slightly embarrassed expression.
"Whether you have one kid like me or five, the pressures of keeping up with the social media moms of 2018 are tough!" Lindsay told POPSUGAR. "We have to give ourselves a break. If my kid is alive and out the door on time with two matching shoes, that's a win for me."
Mom's Post About Her Kids' "Organic" Chicken Dinner Is the Most Relatable Thing Online Right Now
In theory, most of us want the very best for our kids. But in practice, they never get perfection. In fact, they're lucky if they get "good enough." A prime example of this juxtaposition came courtesy of author Bunmi Laditan. In a hilarious Facebook post, the mom blogger penned a description of the dinner she'd prepared for her children.
"Dinner tonight is maybe free-range possibly organic chicken, gently cooked in canola essential oils with hearty Irish potato spears served alongside fresh unwashed root vegetables naturally fortified with beta carotene and good intentions," she wrote.
The photo alongside her caption, however, painted a far more realistic picture: it showed three kids' plates surrounding a paper carton filled with to-go fried chicken and french fries next to a plastic-wrapped package of whole carrots.
But that's not all from this overachieving mom. She even prepared dessert: "The children will search 'chocolate cake' in Google Images and use their imaginations."
Feeling inspired by her meal prep? "Feel free to pin," she joked.
What I Wish I Had Known Before My Child Started Preschool
Sending your child to school for the first time can be difficult. You're filled with so many emotions that change on an hourly basis. One minute, you're worried about your child and how they'll navigate their new independent life away from you. The next minute, you feel excited to finally get a little break. But no matter what, you'll also feel a little nostalgic for the old times - times when your child was just a baby, taking their first steps, and saying "mama" for the first time. But there is one thing that I wish I'd known before sending my son to school for the very first time: worry less and trust the teachers more.
As a mother who taught for nine years, I'm not sure why I didn't trust my son's teachers right away. When I taught, that's all I wanted from parents, but as soon as the school year started, my worry consumed me. Would my son make any friends? Would he do OK academically? Would he behave? Would other kids bully him? And instead of trusting that the teachers would let me know if there was ever a problem, I let it all eat away at me.

I turned into the neurotic mother who sent weekly emails to my son's teacher asking how things were going. Thankfully, my son's teacher, who knew I was experiencing this all for the first time, handled me with such grace. She always answered my emails promptly and stayed after class to chat with me. She comforted me and calmed my nerves. Unlike me, this school year wasn't her first rodeo. And my son? He was doing just fine. He made friends, learned right on pace, and behaved well with his classmates. I stressed myself out so much for nothing.
Moms, I know it's hard to send your child off to school for the first time. But trust that they'll be OK. And after a little time, you'll be OK, too. Your child's teachers are invested in them and have their best interest at heart. They will nurture your child, help them grow, and encourage them in their days away from home. Let them.
A Letter to My Son Before His Very First Day of Preschool
To My Darling Son on This Very Big Day,
Congratulations! I know you don't realize this, mostly because you're 3 and the concept of time is impossible for you to grasp, but you're getting older. So old, in fact, that I can hardly believe just a few short years ago you could barely lift your head during tummy time, and even longer since I could feel you kicking my rib cage. You're growing up too fast for me to adequately rationalize, and today, even though for you it feels totally normal, is a very big day.
Most days, we've been able to play together, doing largely whatever we want, but preschool is going to be a different animal. I know that this is going to be hard for you, and it's OK to cry. You're going to have some big feelings that I know you can't express, and tears are going to be the only way for you to tell me how you feel. Cry and hold on to me as I leave - I can take it, because I know that after I leave, you'll be surrounded by people who will take care of you.
Preschool is the beginning of your education. This doesn't mean that you haven't been learning a ton already. Colors, shapes, sizes, numbers, and letters are some of you favorite things, and in school you'll learn more things than you could ever dream of. But school is about so much more than books and stuff found on tests. Now, your other qualities will shine through.
On the playground and while out with friends, I'm constantly in awe of your kindness. Even though you often resemble the Tasmanian Devil or a whirling dervish, your high energy doesn't mean you're not also a sweet sharer who loves playing with your friends. You think of others, and that compassion will serve you well in preschool, but it won't be easy.
In school, as in life, there are going to be people who think, feel, and play differently, and even worse, won't follow the rules. While I wish that every day and interaction for you will be copacetic, having gone to school for many years, I know that's not the case. Whether you disagree with the teacher, are in an argument with a classmate, or are just not in a mood to interact, remember to be kind even if you don't get it in return.
Ask for help, which is something you're a little too good at while at home. Continue that desire to learn and be aided by others. I know that you'll likely be a little quiet at first, but by letting others know that you need assistance or that you don't understand something, you're opening up your world to a whole new level of learning. Trust your gut, and when you're ready to try on your own, your teachers will be there if you need them.
You are so brave. Thank you for being my son, and trusting us. Preschool is, whether you recognize it or not, the start of a grand adventure for you. For at least the next 15 years, you'll be asked to learn, practice, and grow even when you don't feel like it. Continue to be my brave little one. Before you know it, we will blink and you'll be grown, but you'll always be my baby boy.

Labor Hurts Like a Mother - 8 Completely Unsexy Things You Need to Just Survive
Whether you're still in your first trimester or counting down the days until you're due, if you're having a hospital birth, chances are you've spent a fair amount of time thinking about packing your "go bag." You've likely asked friends which things they absolutely couldn't have done without (a soft robe with pockets!) and which items ended up being totally unnecessary (LED candles sound good in theory, but who has time to fish them out of their bags to set them up?). If you end up having a vaginal birth, here are eight unglamorous things you absolutely must have on hand to ensure a prosperous postpartum recovery. None of these are superfluous.
This School's Take on the "In My Feelings" Challenge Is the Smartest One by Far
To everyone who already posted their own version of the "In My Feelings" challenge, you're about to get schooled.
Busbee Elementary School, which is located in Wagener, SC, used the Summer's most viral dance challenge to motivate students on their first day back to class. School officials shared a photo to its Facebook page this week of a handmade sign greeting students with a clever twist on the lyrics to Drake's hit song - alongside a cutout drawing of Drake himself posing with "heart" hands.
The bulletin board reads: "Kiki, are you reading? Are you writing? Are you down with the knowledge? Cause I need ya and I want ya to go to college!"
On Twitter, the school wrote that this "is going to be a great year" and that the "Bulldogs are up to the challenge."
Challenge accepted, Busbee Elementary!
If You Include Your Kids in Your Keto Diet, You Need to Read This
The keto diet seems to be everywhere right now. People are loving the low-carb, high-fat diet because of the promised weight loss results. For many individuals, they find it's easier to follow and stick with since you don't have to give up quite as much. But, many registered dietitians are not in favor keto because it doesn't encompass a well-rounded diet. And as registered dietitian Stephanie Clarke suggests, it's especially unsafe for kids to be placed on the keto diet.
"I don't recommend that children follow a ketogenic diet unless under the strict supervision of a medical team as treatment for seizure disorders/epilepsy," Clarke told POPSUGAR. Children need carbohydrates and protein so they can develop and grow properly, and if a child is on the keto diet, all of those foods are limited, which could eliminate important vitamins and minerals. It's vital that children receive potassium, magnesium, fiber, calcium, and zinc - all of which can be scarce if on the keto diet.
"We always advocate for a completely diet-free, weight-neutral approach when it comes to kids' nutrition and eating - and adults, too, for that matter," Clarke continued. "It's so important to teach children a healthy relationship with food from the start, and to let them explore food in a judgment-free and guilt-free way." She added that putting children on extreme diets like keto can later affect self-esteem and even turn into eating disorders. When it comes down to it, it's best to teach children about well-rounded, healthy eating choices to promote the proper growth and development and avoid including them in your diet routines.
15 Ways Having a Puppy Is NOT Like Having a Baby, Even a Little Bit
No matter what side of the should-you-call-your-pet-your-baby debate you're on, there are undoubtedly some similarities between adopting a new puppy and adding a human baby to your family. Both will probably wake you up crying in the middle of the night, both need a lot of attention and supervision, both are impossibly cute, both will probably make you a more responsible person, and both are super easy to love.
But there are also many, many ways that a puppy is absolutely nothing like a new baby, and I should know. After surviving the baby stage with my two children, now 4-and-a-half and 7, I'm now deep into puppy mode with the latest addition to our family: a 9-week-old Golden Retriever (cue the "awws," which he totally deserves because he's the the most adorable puppy alive, and no, I'm not biased). However, caring for my newest family member is a million times easier than caring for either of my crazy babies ever was, even on their most low-maintenance days. Still don't believe me? Check out the following 15 reasons having a puppy is absolutely not like having a baby.
My Friend and I Stopped Having Play Dates Because We Realized Our Kids Hated Each Other
When my son started preschool, I quickly befriended another mom. She was one of those moms you click with immediately - small talk was easy, we had things in common, and our kids were the same age. So, after a few months of socializing before and after preschool, I asked if she wanted to have a play date with the boys. They could run around while we finally enjoyed adult conversation outside of school pick-up and drop-off. She happily agreed, and they came over the next week. Only, we never even took into consideration whether our boys actually got along or not.
It took me a while to realize that friendships can be hard at any age, and if you don't get along with someone, you shouldn't be forced to be their friend.
You see, we didn't really know what went on in that preschool classroom after we dropped our sons off. Our boys could have been best friends or complete enemies for all we knew. But since they were only 4, we took the gamble. During our first play date, they came to our house. Her three kids and my two hustled down to the basement together. I poured us some wine upstairs, and within minutes, we heard the first fight break out. "I was playing with that!" my son screamed. "No! It's my turn!" her son yelled back. When we stormed downstairs, we saw the two boys each trying to pull a toy away from the other. It felt like we spent most of that afternoon playing referee instead of having a relaxed few hours with adult conversation like we had planned.
But yet, we pressed on. We scheduled more play dates with the kids because she and I clicked, and we didn't think too much of the boys' scuffles (kids will be kids, right?). But then after one horrendous play date at their house, I realized that our sons just genuinely didn't like each other. Yes, it's important to learn to play nice with people, but if you don't click with someone, why push it? I knew we should stop scheduling play dates, but I didn't know how to handle it.
So, we had them over to our house one last time. I made the decision that I was going to be open about our situation, and when the boys gave us 10 minutes of peace and quiet, I said, "Have you noticed that they fight . . . a lot?" She sighed. "Yes, I have. It's awful! What do we do?" Because she and I got along so well and I didn't want our friendship to end (it's hard finding good mom friends), we decided we would just have girls' nights from now on. I was so relieved for both myself and my son, and I could tell she was, too.
Our boys play fine together while they're in school, but we no longer plan play dates. It took me a while to realize that friendships can be hard at any age, and if you don't get along with someone, you shouldn't be forced to be their friend. We weren't being fair to our sons. But just because they aren't the best of buds, it didn't mean that my friendship with my new mom friend had to end. Our relationship became stronger when we took our kids out of it, and I'm so glad we did.
61 Costumes That Your "Too-Cool-For-Halloween" Teen Will Actually Want to Wear This Year
Just because your kid is already a teenager doesn't mean they're automatically going to be too old to indulge in some good ol' trick-or-treating, or, at the very least, attend a ghoulish party decorated in cobwebs and jack-o'-lanterns. So whether your high schooler will want to dress as something nostalgic and throwback (that potentially throws back to your childhood!), or they're more inspired by current pop culture happenings, we went through the spirited shelves and found 61 costumes that are perfect for All Hallows' Eve. We even have a few t-shirt and sweatshirt options if they're only willing to half commit.
If You Hate the School Drop-Off Line, You Are Going to Love This Mom's Curbside Rant
If your mornings now involve sitting impatiently in a stalled line of cars outside your kid's school, we've got something to distract you until it's your turn to push your child out of the passenger seat before slamming on the gas.
Writer Susannah B. Lewis recorded a hilarious video rant of her own experience driving her son and daughter to school.
From watching kids struggling with seatbelts ("This ain't Days of Thunder, they could have unstrapped way back there. We're not rolling through here at 75 miles per hour!") to marveling at moms with no lack of urgency ("We've been at school a week, and she is still taking pictures of him walking into this building. Lord!"), she covers every annoying thing that could possibly happen curbside.
At one point, she gets so awkwardly close to getting out of her vehicle, pounding on a fellow mom's window, and telling her to move up, but she stops herself: "I would if I wasn't sitting here in pajamas and hadn't brushed my teeth. I sure would!"
Sure, Susannah's hilarious clip won't make your drop-off routine any less annoying, but at least you'll have a few more one-liners to mutter under your breath while you wait.
Literally Just 117 Cute Photos of Dogs That Prove We're Not Worthy of Their Pure and Beautiful Souls
If you're a dog person, you know there hasn't been a truer statement spoken than the one made in Marley & Me: "A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart, and he'll give you his." In short, dogs just make everything better. They love you unconditionally and will never, ever judge you. And no matter what happened to you on any given day, they'll be there to excitedly greet you as if you've been gone for years when you walk through your front door.
Even if you don't have a dog, just being around them lifts your mood, doesn't it? The same can be said for looking at cute photos of them, which is why we've rounded up over 100 of them right here. Keep reading to see them all and to be reminded that humans really aren't worthy of their pure, innocent, and adorable souls.

This Couple Rented Out Toy Story Mania For Their Disneyland Wedding, So We Can Stop Trying Now
The same couple who pulled off the most beautiful Tangled engagement shoot did not disappoint when it came to their Disney Fairy-Tale Wedding. Sarah and Gilbert stunned us once again with their big day held at California Adventure, complete with surprise after surprise for the guests and a whole lot of magic.
The two met at UC Berkeley when Sarah was a freshman and Gilbert was a graduating senior. They stayed friends for the next few years, bumping into each other on both campus, when Gilbert got a job at Cal, and as neighbors, when Sarah became the girl next door, but little did she know that her future husband was right under her nose. After four years of friendship, both of them finally began to "see the light" (hence, their Tangled-inspired session) and pursue a romantic relationship.
Seven years later, Gilbert proposed on the same steps of the Berkeley plaza where they realized they were better together as partners than friends. In true Disney fashion, he even popped the question with a custom "Adventure Book" because they watched Up on their first date.
Sarah and Gilbert have always shared a love for Disney, from running Disney marathons together to visiting the parks several times a year as annual pass holders. With Disneyland holding such a special place in Sarah's heart and it being where they took their first vacation together, it only made sense that they tie the knot there as well.
"We were inspired to have a Fairy-Tale Wedding at Disneyland because we wanted to share the magic and wonder we feel when we're at the parks with our closest friends and family," Gilbert told POPSUGAR. "Sarah's always been my princess, and I wanted us to have a wedding that truly makes her feel like one."
Sarah always knew she wanted a Disneyland wedding. Though she originally wanted to have the reception inside the Animation Building at California Adventure, price increases forced a change of plans. But of course, Disney's Fairy-Tale Weddings helped the couple create a wedding just as magical, all while meeting each of their requirements: an anti-cookie-cutter wedding and the ability to go inside the park with their guests.
"I am not a ballroom bride, so I couldn't imagine having our guests at any of the rooms," Sarah said. "My heart was still set on the Animation Building, but after telling DFTW that I wanted to 'bring the outdoors inside,' they made it happen."
They decided on the Rose Court Garden - as an ode to Sarah's late grandmother, Rose - and the intimate setting of the Trillium. Disney transformed the indoor space into a garden with lanterns, candles, hedges, long tables, and gold accents. In addition to classic Disneyland fare like corn dogs and churros, Sarah and Gilbert continued to throw surprises at their guests throughout the day.
"All of our guests were excited to attend our wedding at Disneyland, but they had no idea what we had up our sleeves!" Sarah said. "The entire day was so under wraps that even our bridal party didn't know what was going to happen next! Everyone was constantly on their toes, not knowing what to expect next."
One of the first surprises included Sarah coming down in the Cinderella Carriage, a moment when she took everyone's breath away, including ours.
"Seeing her came with the realization that I would be spending the rest of my life with a real-life princess," Gilbert said. "I was overwhelmed with emotion and couldn't handle myself. Nothing else in the world mattered in that moment."
A live singer sang Disney tunes, guests were escorted to their seats via personalized Fastpasses, and each person also got glowing wristbands that their DJ controlled with the music. But it didn't stop there. Mickey and Minnie made a guest appearance during the reception and guests were thrilled to find out that they were able to experience the last showing of World of Color in their own reserved area. To top it all off, the couple also rented out Toy Story Mania after the park closed for just their party to enjoy!
Sarah and Gilbert ended their magical evening with a proper wand send-off and rode off on the Main Street Fire Engine. From start to finish, the newlyweds' nuptials were Disney perfection.
After seeing their photos, you'll consider a Disney wedding for yourself. See them ahead!
