I Should Probably Feel Bad About the Halloween Prank I Play on My Kids Every Year, but It's Just Too Good
I love everything about Halloween. From the creative and cute costumes, endless scary movie marathons, and creepy decorations to the haunted house outings and the trick-or-treating, I go all out every year. Since my kids are still pretty young (4 and 6), I have to keep my love for all things spooky in check, but that definitely doesn't mean I still don't have a little festive fun with them. And one of my very favorite Halloween traditions I started with my kids is playing a harmless prank on them every year.
I pick a day during the month of October (I don't do this on actual Halloween because they'll see it coming, so I pick a different day every year) and run to the dollar store to buy a ton of fake bugs, spider rings, and more. While my kids are still sound asleep, I tiptoe into their dark bedrooms and carefully place all of these pretend bugs on their beds. I tiptoe back out, get back into my own bed, and fall back asleep. And every year, my husband and I are woken up by their surprised screams and calls for help once they discover what's all over their beds.
"Ahhhhh! Get off of me!" I hear them yell. They run down the hallway and away from the bugs as fast as they can before quickly remembering the annual prank their dear old mom plays on them year after year. They then start belly laughing uncontrollably and run to check what was put in the other's bed. The hilarity is contagious and quickly fills out whole house with the Halloween spirit.
"Mom! You got us again!" they always say over breakfast that morning before carefully devising a plan to "get mom back." They never do, of course, but just listening to their imaginations think up funny Halloween pranks to play on me (like we're in our very own prank war) makes me feel like a kid again. It makes them even more excited for trick-or-treating, and I get to relive the innocent joys of the Halloween season all over again.
I'm going to keep this family tradition going as long as I can - even when my children are teenagers (I can't wait for those eye-rolls and to hear, "Mom, you're so embarrassing"). Because no matter how old they get, I always want to remember to be silly together, because the trick part can be just as good (if not better) than the treats.
9 Halloween Games That Will Make Any Sleepover a Spooky Delight
If you love to throw parties for your kids, Halloween is the perfect time to pull out all of the stops. Unlike other holidays, Halloween is all about the theme, the costumes, and the candy. Many times, these parties can turn into sleepovers (sometimes you plan it that way, and sometimes your kid begs you to let their friends stay over). And when that happens, it's so fun to have a few creepy games on hand to enhance the Halloween mood (just make sure all of the kids are old enough and can handle it!). Whether it's a slightly spooky one that uses a Ouija board to connect to the spirit world or a chanting ritual in the mirror (I'm pretty sure I still can't order more than two Bloody Marys at brunch), there's a handful of games that will keep everyone talking well after Oct. 31. Keep reading to see them all now . . . if you dare.

Crazy Rich Asians: Here's Everything That Happens in the Books
Crazy Rich Asians didn't just break box-office expectations . . . it downright shattered them. The rom-com had one of the biggest openings in history for its genre and was pretty much the talk of the internet as soon as it hit theaters. Even better news? Warner Bros., which owns the film options to all three of Kevin Kwan's novels, just announced that a sequel movie is on its way.
Kwan's book series includes the original Crazy Rich Asians, followed by China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. If you thought the saga of Rachel and the Youngs was over with that swoon-worthy plane proposal, you are so very, very wrong. There's tons more drama, parties, manipulations, friendships, and, of course, romance to come. In fact, some of the characters who barely got any screen time in the movie are set to be key players in the sequels.
If you aren't spoiler-averse, or if you've already binged Kwan's novels, read on for some of what awaits fans in the next installments.
Warning: Major, MAJOR spoilers for Crazy Rich Asians ahead! Proceed with caution.
When Should Kids Stop Trick-or-Treating? The Answer Might Surprise You
A plethora of comfy sweaters, pumpkins everywhere, and the debate over whether or not candy corn is the best or the dessert of the devil (team candy corn over here) are just a few of the things you can expect to see every Fall. And if people aren't debating about very serious candy rankings, they're probably talking about what age kids should stop trick-or-treating.
There's no right or scientific answer for when a child should stop trick-or-treating. It's up to the child to determine when they want to ditch the costumes and try something else.
I get that some adults are annoyed by older kids ringing their doorbell and asking for candy. The holiday is a chance for young children to dress up and use their imaginations, which gives a special magic to Halloween. Older children, namely those in middle and high school, are clearly out of the realm of pretend, and therefore may feel somewhat out of place among the hoard of 5-year-olds running around dressed as Elmo. For many, it feels like the teens are taking the candy and innocent fun from the younger kids, and some cities agree with them. Teens also start to pay more attention to the "trick" aspect of trick-or-treating, causing mischief and playing pranks on unsuspecting neighbors.
In the Canadian town of New Brunswick, they banned teenagers over the age of 16 from dressing up and trick-or-treating. While they did this largely in response to pranks that were being pulled, by banning trick-or-treating, they were also sending a message that Halloween is only for younger children. Yet, as the law in New Brunswick demonstrates, the fear of older children trick-or-treating has less to do with keeping the holiday kid-focused and everything to do with policing mischievous behavior.
If a child, no matter their age, is respectful and in costume, I will always open my door for them on Halloween. It doesn't matter if they're three or 13, I'd rather have a group of teenagers trick-or-treating and having a good time than out causing trouble. As long as they still want to, you should feel totally OK with letting them get dressed up with their friends - even if it's just some silly face paint - walk around the neighborhood, and, yes, eat way too much candy. And if they don't want to (you'll probably hear a, "That's so lame, Mom!"), that's OK, too. There are so many other fun and spooky activities you can organize for your teen to enjoy on Halloween.
At the end of the day, there's no right or scientific answer for when a child should stop trick-or-treating. While it usually happens naturally when they become a teenager, there's no official cutoff age (unless your town enforces one). It's up to the child to determine when they want to ditch the costumes and do something else. Until then, feel free to continue letting them have a little door-to-door fun.

It's well after midnight on April 14, 2018, and my phone is vibrating incessantly. Beyoncé has just taken the stage for the first weekend of Coachella, and Twitter is blowing up with videos and pictures. Beyoncé's rendition of the unofficial black national anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and her empowering speech excerpts throughout the show inspired people to re-create the routine, and now, re-create the look for Halloween. If you're a proud and buzzing BeyHive member or you just need some iconic Bey inspiration for Halloween, all it takes are three pieces: a cropped yellow hoodie, jean shorts, and some metallic boots. Princess Charlene and Prince Albert II Celebrate the End of Summer With Their Adorable Twins
It's always a little sad saying goodbye to Summer, but the Monaco royal family's latest appearance should help ease the pain. On Friday, Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene bid farewell to the season with their annual end of Summer picnic in Monaco. The royals brought along their 3-year-old twins, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, who looked adorable in their traditional costumes. "[It] was a very, very, very beautiful evening," a guest told People. "The children clearly enjoyed themselves with their cousins around them and, the music and food."
The festivities marked the family's first public appearance since returning from their trip to Tahiti in August. It was the brood's first long-distance vacation and Gabriella reportedly learned some dance moves from Lady Gaga, who was also vacationing on the island at the time. What a lucky little girl!
I'm That Overly Cautious Mom Who Throws Away All Halloween Candy That Isn't Totally Sealed
Hello! Allow me to introduce myself. I'm that super-overprotective mom who is paranoid AF. Especially around Halloween, when so many scary things can happen (literally). I need only have heard one story about one kid eating a piece of candy that was tampered with, even if it was way back in 1987 when I was a kid myself, to unleash some corporate-level quality control on my own kids' stash before they dig in.
Before my kids could so much as utter one word of protest, I had already tossed those repurposed cocoa solids in the closest garbage bin.
I operate under the assumption that a parent can never be too cautious when your children are basically taking candy from strangers. So, yes, every year, my kids have to wait while I inspect their chocolate bars and lollipops for, oh, I don't know, razor blades. If I happen to see a wrapper that isn't totally sealed (anything wrapped at the sides is gone) or looks iffy, like someone removed it and rewrapped it, or even just lifted up the edge, I toss that peanut butter cup or mini licorice pack faster than you can say "trick-or-treat."
Not that I encounter too much suspicious candy, but believe me, it's out there. Last year, my kids brought home several chocolate eggs in Christmas wrappers. Thinking about it logically, best case scenario, that candy was 10 months old. Indeed, a quick inspection inside the red and green foils revealed some rather questionable-looking chocolate that was covered in white powder. Before my kids could so much as utter one word of protest, I had already tossed those repurposed cocoa solids in the closest garbage bin.
Here's the thing: My kids don't need all the candy they score on Halloween anyway. Their teeth are probably already going to rot out from the stuff I let them keep that's totally on the up and up. I simply fail to see the need to keep candy on hand that gives me any reason to doubt whether it's safe for my children to eat.
Most of the time, my kids don't even notice I've edited their bounty and removed any candy I've either never heard of or that could possibly have been tampered with, no matter how unlikely. And even if they gave me a hard time, I'd tell them what my mom used to tell me: "It's better to be safe than sorry." One day, when they're parents, they'll understand.

Surprise! Ed Sheeran Basically Just Confirmed That He and Cherry Seaborn Already Got Married
Hold up - did Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn already get married? The "Shape of You" singer surprised us all when he announced this past January that he popped the question to his longtime girlfriend over the holidays, and his latest interview with Access is certainly raising some eyebrows - in a good way, that is. After being asked how the wedding planning was going, Ed played it coy and simply raised his left hand, showing off the platinum band on his ring finger.
The reporter then congratulated Ed and asked him how he managed to get away with that, to which he responded, "I never really do anything too public anyway." So, does this mean Ed and Cherry are already husband and wife? It sure looks like it!
Ed and Cherry first struck up a romance in September 2015 and have been going strong ever since. In fact, three of Ed's songs were actually inspired by Cherry. Aw!
For Anyone Holding Out Hope That Noah Centineo and Lana Condor Are Really Dating . . .
If you've watched Netflix's new romantic comedy, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, you're probably aware of the mania that has surrounded the film's leading couple. Lana Condor and Noah Centineo brought the high school romance of Lara Jean and Peter to life so well, it's understandable that fans are curious if the chemistry is that intense even when the cameras aren't rolling. The two are so charming together, and a romance would be too good to be true! We're sorry to break anyone's heart, but Noah and Lana are just friends.
Understandably, that might be hard to believe - or you might not want to believe it because they're so damn cute together. Their adorableness even inspired the film's director to use a photo of them as Lara Jean's lock screen for the movie, so you're not the only one who sees it. But don't let that take away from how amazing their friendship is - the two are ridiculously sweet on each other. Whether it's photos of them behind the scenes of the movie or videos of them during a buddy boxing session, we can't help but love them.
Both Lana and Noah have nothing but praise for one another, and according to Lana, it's been that way since the beginning. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress gushed about their bond, saying, "I've never felt chemistry like this ever before with any other actor that I've worked with. I think we both know that it's special and I'm just happy that it's him that I'm going through all this with. We make a really, really good team." Aww!
While we agree it would have been adorable if the costars ended up taking their romance off screen, their friendship is too delightful for us to really be disappointed. Plus, we still have hope that they'll share the screen again in a To All the Boys I've Loved Before sequel! While we wait, bask in a few photos of these two crazy kids being super adorable on the red carpet.
Princess Diana Owned the Coolest, Sexiest Swimsuits, and She Looked Like a Model in Them All
Some of the most iconic photos of Princess Diana include her vacationing with her family or sporting splashy swimsuits in the South of France. While her Summer wardrobe included gorgeous pleated dresses and preppy tailored separates, the late royal's swimwear reigned supreme. Your eyes have likely never glossed over a floral bikini set as picture perfect as Diana's, and her colorblock maillots and animal print designs are exactly what you were searching for before you started reading this. We rounded up some memorable snapshots of Princess Diana on holiday, and lucky for you, we found a handful of similar suits nearly identical to the ones she owned. If this doesn't prove that Diana is one of the most classic fashion icons to this day, really, what will?

Why I Won't Let My Daughter Dress Up as Just Another Disney Princess For Halloween
One of the most exciting parts of being a mom is getting to experience the holidays through your children's eyes. There are a few early years where you don't have to worry about a power struggle over Halloween costumes, but once your child is able to voice their opinion, it's tough to tell them "no" when they have their heart set on something. And while I'm not entirely shutting down my eldest daughter's costume request this year, I do have some parameters.
[I told her that] dressing up as something nobody else will be dressed in would make her feel more like an actual princess. I want to encourage her to be as creative as she can.
I've always loved the fact that Halloween allows you to be something or someone else for a night. When I was growing up, I made sure my costumes were not only unique from my everyday self, but also different from every other costume I would see while out trick-or-treating. I never wanted to wear store-bought outfits, and it's something I hoped my daughter wouldn't want, either, especially since I love a good DIY challenge. She wears her Elsa costume from Frozen all year long, so for Halloween, I want her to dream bigger. But this year, we're already having an issue.

First, she said she wanted to be a princess. When I asked her what kind of princess she wanted to be, in hopes this would get both our creative juices flowing to make her ordinary choice extraordinary, her answer was "Elsa!" Instead of saying "OK" right away, I decided to have a conversation with her. I told her that Elsa is a really cool princess, is strong and smart, and has supercool ice powers, but what's also pretty cool is dressing up as something nobody else will be dressed in, which would make her feel more like an actual princess.
She didn't immediately shut me down, so I know there's some wiggle room. I told her that maybe we can come up with our own type of princess - one that carries a sword, has a magical dolphin friend, and wears light-up sneakers. I do still think it should be her choice now that she has her own interests and opinions, but I want to encourage her to be as creative as she can on the one night anything goes. I did make her wear a sparkling sushi roll on her first Halloween, complete with matching family costumes of dad as a sushi chef and mom as a bottle of soy sauce, so I know I owe her one in the costume choice department (it was really cute, though). And if she is truly longing to be Elsa, Elsa she will be. But I'll be dammed if I just let any ordinary Elsa go door-to-door asking for candy on Oct. 31. If she still chooses the Disney princess, she'll be the most amped Elsa they've ever seen. And it will be because we worked on her costume together, making it totally unique to her.

Whether she's following the protocol or completely ignoring it, the Duchess of Sussex has wowed us more than once thanks to her impeccable sense of style and incredible wardrobe.
During her time in the royal limelight, Meghan has developed a few signature style moves. However, while her apparent love for bateau necklines has been well documented, there is something else that the duchess has repeatedly worn over the past few months: belts.
From belted coats to belted dresses, Meghan's used this accessory on multiple occasions in order to perfectly frame her silhouette. Ahead, take a closer look at all the times the former Suits star has put her belt obsession on display this year so far.
This DIY Starbucks Frappuccino Costume For Kids Is Comfortable, Cute, AND Warm
It's never too early to introduce your little ones to the joy that is Starbucks. I made the mistake of giving my daughter her first sip of its Vanilla Bean Frappuccino when she was just 18 months old. Now, at 4, she's one of their best customers (they have awesome caffeine-free drinks for kids). So it was only natural that we decided to dress her up as her favorite drink on Halloween, and she totally ate up all of the attention. In fact, we lost count of how many people stopped us to ask about or compliment her costume. So if you're looking for a sure winner for this year's costume contests that won't break the bank, this DIY frappuccino ensemble might just be perfect for you.
And let me just say that, even though I don't have a creative bone in my body, putting this together was actually pretty easy (and super affordable). It took about two hours from start to finish, and that includes the time it took my husband to draw the logo, cut it out, and adhere it to the "cup." Keep reading for more photos and instructions for our DIY Starbucks Frappuccino costume that you can easily create for your own budding barista.
I Let My 4-Year-Old Watch Scary Movies, and I Don't Feel Bad About It
Well before his 4th birthday, I realized my son - who in most ways is pretty much my behavioral clone - and I differed in one significant way: I've always had a massive dislike for scary stuff. This kid? He's obsessed with all things spooky. The first time I discovered him watching Goosebumps on Netflix, I immediately made him turn it off. How he'd even found the series was beyond me, but I assumed the show was totally outside of his toddler-size comfort zone and letting him continue to watch would only end with me soothing some serious nightmares, probably around 2 a.m.
True to his word, he's never had a single scary-show-related nightmare.
He did not agree. When I switched to a Netflix show I deemed more age appropriate, he started flipping out. "Sweetie, that's a scary show," I explained. "It's for big kids." "It's not scary to me," he screamed back. "I'm big enough." The fact that his sister, three years his senior, was sitting in the corner with her hands covering her eyes, looking generally terrified, seemed to prove otherwise. "Honey, your big sister thinks it's too scary, so I don't think it's for kids your age," I gently reinforced. "She can leave, then," he replied firmly. "I like it. I'm not scared, Mom."
I won the debate that day (we settled for a spooky episode of Scooby-Doo instead), but in the year since, I've totally given up on the scary movie battle. He's watched the original Ghostbusters and its sequel more times than I can count; he loves both the '90s and newer Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies, and yes, he's seen pretty much every episode of Goosebumps. And God knows what spooky stuff he's sussed out on YouTube. True to his word, he's never had a single scary-show-related nightmare.
Am I completely comfortable with his preference for the shows that feature ghosts, monsters, blood, guts, and the occasional mystery-solving dog? Not totally. But it's just one in a long line of ways that my children have proved to me that they are not, in fact, mini mes, but instead their own people who may share my eye color and love of organization but also have a million tiny things that have nothing to do with the DNA we share. And to me, that's one of the most magical, gratifying parts of parenting: to see that my children somehow manage to be both inextricably linked to me and yet entirely separate beings, who have continued to surprise me since the day they were born.
Maybe in the years to come, I'll learn that my son has a talent for lacrosse (I was never sporty) or a preference for country music (never been a fan) or a desire to jump out of a plane (I like to be buckled in at 30,000 feet), and I'll try to be supportive of all the ways he's different than me, even when I don't understand them, even when they kind of scare me. I'll remember that he's always proved his bravery, starting with that first episode of Goosebumps.

11 Low-Carb Fruits to Get You Through the Keto Diet
If you're on the keto diet, then you know that it's all about high-fat and low-carb foods. Unfortunately, that limits your fruit consumption because fruits contain sugar and sugar contains carbohydrates. However, there's still a pretty wide range of fruits that are low enough in carbs for you to literally make a fruit salad - the only caveat is that you wouldn't be able to eat too much of it, but sharing is caring, right?
According to Dr. Jason Axe, the recommended daily intake of carbohydrates in order for your body to go and stay in ketosis is 30 to 50 grams. If you're a fruit-lover, we've compiled a list of fruits that contain well under 30 grams of carbohydrates per serving. So go ahead and treat yourself to a slice of watermelon, or throw a handful of blueberries in your full-fat yogurt. Read through to see what other fruits are low in carbs, along with some keto-friendly recipe ideas.

No Longer Silent: 7 Signs of Ovarian Cancer
With its recognizable symbol of the pink ribbon, we all know that October is breast cancer awareness month since this cancer has the distinction of being the most common cancer among women. September, however, is dedicated to raising awareness about ovarian cancer. Often referred to as the "silent killer," ovarian cancer is often detected when it is in the advanced stages, when the disease is largely incurable. But William Hamilton, MD, the lead researcher on a survey of symptoms of the disease, said, "Ovarian cancer is not silent; it's noisy. It's just we're not very good at deciphering the noise."
The survey of 212 women all diagnosed with ovarian cancer, ages 40 and above, revealed a pattern of symptoms. While these symptoms individually are common and could easily be signs of a lesser ailment, the collection of symptoms can act as a warning signal leading to an early diagnosis. And early detection increases the odds of beating the disease. Here are the seven common symptoms:
- Abdominal distension
- Urinary frequency
- Abdominal pain
- Postmenopausal bleeding
- Loss of appetite
- Rectal bleeding
- Abdominal bloating
You might find it redundant that the list contains both abdominal distension and bloating, but medically speaking, they are different. Bloating comes and goes, but distension is "a progressive increase in abdominal size." In the US, bloating is the most persistent symptom and unfortunately a sign of many other health problems. Making both patients and gynecologists aware of the collection of symptoms is the next step in the fight against ovarian cancer.

Lady Gaga's Fashion 360 in Paris Will Give You Whiplash
Lady Gaga arrived in Paris with fiancé Christian Carino and immediately kicked off what promises to be a fashion tour de force. In the span of a single day, she transformed from a midi-dress-wearing lady who lunches to a slick, high-fashion club kid like that.
For her first look, Gaga was the picture of retro elegance. She stepped out in a ladylike red tie-neck midi dress from CO's fall collection, finishing off her vintage-inspired outfit with Lorraine Schwartz earrings, Kuboraum cat-eye sunglasses, and a black leather Balenciaga handbag. Seemingly having had enough of the retro-ladylike vibe, she then flipped the script entirely, changing into a glossy electric blue trench, complete with metallic green bra and platform boots. Don't you dare try to pigeonhole this fashion chameleon.
As for us, we're fans of both looks - and we're suddenly acutely feeling the lack of vinyl outerwear in our wardrobes. If you're with us, check out both of Gaga's Parisian outfits from every angle, then shop lookalike versions for yourself.

Belly fat can be stubborn, but Sarah Chadwell, NASM, CPT, a certified trainer, has three simple but effective full-body workouts to increase fat-burning.
Full body? Yes, target fat reduction isn't really a thing, meaning you can't tell your body to only loose fat around your midsection. You must burn fat all over your body to reduce belly fat - as well as add a healthy diet and plenty of sleep. We know that's a rough thing to accept, but when you start practicing these three workouts, you'll definitely see results.
