Thinking About Trying Eyelash Growth Serums? Read This First
Long lashes are lovely. The process of getting them, however, can be a huge pain. While we've seen drastic lengthening effects that using eyelash serums can have, it likely also raises a few questions for first time users. Luckily, understanding how the clear formula works can alleviate some of the fears of using it.
According to dermatologist Shereene Idriss, MD, the serums work by keeping the fibers from breaking. "They condition lashes and lengthen their life cycle," she said, "Over-the-counter serums are made of biotin, which strengthens the hair, while peptides or castor oil [nourishes] them." She noted that prescription eyelash growth serums work a little differently, citing Latisse as an example: "It's a lash serum that has been proven scientifically to actually increase the growth phase and length of your eyelashes."
If these formulas work by doing things like preventing breakage and lengthening the fibers, one can conclude that we aren't losing our eyelashes here. But then, what are the risks we'd be faced with? According to cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson: eye irritation like itching, redness, and watering. She notes you should look out for ingredients like phenoxyethanol or chlorphenesin, which preserve the integrity of the serum but can also lead to irritation.
Opthalmologist and residency program director at NYU Langone Health, Ilyse Haberman, MD, mentions another possible side effect is a change in color to your iris. While studies on every prescription eyelash serums is limited, one study by The University of Michigan has reported this (as well as a darkening of eyelids and fat wasting around the eyes) with use of the topical ingredient bimatoprost, which is used as an active ingredient in Latisse. While these risks are minimal, it's important to note that you should stop use if you see any of these side effects.
When it comes to these serums, if anything outside of your lashes starts to change, you might want to nix what you're using and opt for a set of falsies instead.

This Is the 1 Skincare Product Everyone Should Use in 2019
Unless you want Don Vito Corleone's jowls (or are old enough to know who that is), now is the time to start taking care of your skin. But with something like a bajillion products launching every day, it can be hard to know where to start, so we'll make it easy for you: retinol.
No, it's not a sexy serum or fancy-smelling face cream, but there's a reason experts have long been singing its praises: used daily, the workhorse vitamin A derivative has been clinically proven to speed up cell turnover, fade fine lines and dark spots, treat acne, and reduce the appearance of pores more than any other antiaging ingredient on the market. Period.
"Retinol combats all the signs of aging in addition to signs of hormonal imbalance," dermatologist Michelle Henry, MD, said. "As it is exfoliating, it also helps to unclog pores and shrink the oil glands." The best part is you don't have to go to the dermatologist if you want some, either; there are plenty of effective over-the-counter formulas that work the same magic (at lower doses).
While the ingredient can be drying, and you should build up your skin's tolerance before using it daily, the results are the stuff worth believing in. Made a vow to finally get your visage in shape come 2019? Retinol. Want to look fresh-faced for all those holiday parties? Retinol. (You see where we're going with this?) New Year's resolution list, got room for one more?

Smashbox Just Came Out With a Bigger Cover Shot Palette, and It's as Good as the OGs
I've long recommended the Smashbox Cover Shot palettes to my friends as a reliable group of eye shadows that are well worth the $29 price tag. When the brand launched its latest in the series, the LA Cover Shot Palette ($45), I was intrigued to see if these hues would be the same high quality I've come to love.
The spectrum of colors are arranged into four sections of four shadows, signifying different color schemes you could use. While I prefer to switch up the colors and combine shades from different sections, this is definitely a plus for any makeup novice. The sections include one with brightly hued shades, one with golden tones, one with a cherry-eyed arrangement, and a soft smoky section. The packaging itself is also very appealing, featuring a holographic LA beach scene that shifts from day to night as you move the palette around.
I would recommend a cream base color to pump up the brighter hues on the left side of the palette, but the neutrals and deeper shades apply fully pigmented in a single swipe. They're also easy to blend and quite soft, which means you may want to apply your eye makeup before your foundation to clean up any fallout while using these shades. The variety of looks you can create with the range of hues also makes it a good choice to travel with, and it also includes an Always On Gel Liner to help you complete your look.
It's larger than the previous Cover Shot palettes, and I'm happy to report it's more of the same dependable quality I love from the originals.
9 Face Wipes That Won't Make Sensitive Skin Feel the Burn
Only in a Shakespeare sonnet could a red face (an "everlasting bonfire light") seem kind of endearing. When it's your own painfully pink skin staring back at you in the mirror, however, it takes every inch of willpower not to give your entire beauty arsenal a Romeo and Juliet ending. No product is safe - not even the seemingly harmless makeup remover wipe.
You see, for anyone who breaks out in hives just thinking about the words "lightly fragranced" or suffers from rosacea, eczema, or sensitive skin, wipes can be an open invitation to sting central. The good news is that not all of them are created equal, and there are some on the market that gently coddle your face like a nice sheet of fabric should.
Check out some of our favorites ahead - and leave the color red to what the big guns upstairs intended, like wine, spaghetti, and (for all you romantics) a rose by any other name.
How 5 Editors Deal With Hair Knots During Scarf and Hat Season
For people in cold climates, Winter causes a bevy of beauty issues including itchy dry skin, brittle nails, and chapped lips. While we have easy solutions to most of these problems (load up on the lotion and lip balm, people), one problem still escapes us: how to prevent the rat's nest of hair that tangles at the nape of our necks while we're bundled up during our commute. Somehow, wearing our hair down creates an issue when it gets jumbled up in our hoods, scarves, hats, and coats. Read POPSUGAR editors' tips for dealing with the tangly mess during the cold months, ahead.

Can Your Skin Type Change? We Asked the Experts
I've had oily skin for as long as I can remember, and by the time I was a senior in high school wearing makeup regularly, I had pretty much tried out every little trick I found on the internet to try to permanently banish all the excess oils from my face. When nothing seemed to work for me, I figured that my relationship with blotting papers would undoubtedly last a lifetime. That is, until very recently when I noticed that the midafternoon shine I once found myself constantly fighting off hasn't been as large of an issue for me anymore. My skin, as of late, has been somewhere in the normal area - not too oily, but also not too dry.
With all of that considered, I instantly began to question if my skin type has changed and whether that's even possible. So first things first: dermatologists say it is possible for your skin type to change. But because it is determined by your genes, how it changes is a little complicated.
If you've noticed that your normally oily skin is crossing over into normal, combination, or dry territory, then you can chalk a lot of that up to aging.
According to dermatologist Dhaval Bhanusali, MD FAAD, if you've noticed that your normally oily skin is crossing over into normal, combination, or dry territory, then you can chalk a lot of that up to aging. "When in our teens and 20s, hormones are pumping and we have increased oil production," he told POPSUGAR. "As we age, this tends to decrease, which leads our skin to become [drier] and more irritated." But it's not just aging that can do a number on your skin or impact the way it feels over time. Another factor to consider is weather.
"The weather significantly impacts your skin, which may feel heavy or greasy during the humidity of the Summer and dry or flaky in the cold of the Winter," said dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD. Warmer weather can cause your skin to feel much oilier than usual, and that oil can later become trapped on your skin when it mixes with sweat and dirt. On the flip side, cold weather and wind both have the ability to strip the skin of natural oils, which can inevitably cause dryness.
And while weather is an external factor that's simply out of your control, it's also possible that your skin's condition could be fluctuating as a result of your own habits. You can inadvertently dry out your skin by drinking coffee and not balancing it out with water, Bhanusali said, while other things like overexfoliation can cause your skin to produce more oil than usual. "You can strip all the 'good' oils from your skin and actually cause breakouts due to compensatory hypersecretion of oils into your pores," he explained.
Whatever your skin's condition, you still have a lot of control over the products you use to manage it. If oily skin is normally an issue for you, Bhanusali recommends using products with salicylic acid that absorb into oil glands and decrease production, while Zeichner recommends using a foaming cleanser. As for those with drier skin, the key to getting it under control is using hydrating products.
We Did the Hard Work of Finding Kate Middleton's Best 2018 Hair Moments So You Don't Have To
If you looked up "Kate Middleton" in the dictionary, we're certain that somewhere in the description would be her always-perfectly-in-place chestnut brown hair. With never a strand out of place, Middleton has tried most long hairstyles. Some she favors more, like the chignon, while others she brings out for seasonal occasions, like the holiday ribbon in hair. But what do they have in common? They're all elegant.
Among the excitement of two royal weddings and another royal baby, the duchess has had one of her busiest years ever, but she managed it all with a beautiful bouncy blowout. We've rounded up some of our favorite royal hairstyles moments ahead (spoiler, there are a lot).

Stop Everything: Chrissy Teigen's Dad Just Got a Tattoo of Her Face For Her Birthday
Chrissy Teigen is probably one of the most-loved people in Hollywood - she's got killer looks and a killer sense of humor, after all - but her father, Ron Teigen Sr., has just proved he still loves his daughter the most. For her 33rd birthday on Nov. 30, he got a large black-and-white tattoo of Teigen on his arm by tattoo artist Mark Mahoney.
Clearly, the model loved the gift and posted her dad's new ink on Instagram. It's obvious that he is her biggest fan - and John Legend has some big birthday gift shoes to fill. No word yet on whether her dad will also get a tattoo for his other daughter, Tina.
We're Calling It: This Is the Beauty Look Lady Gaga Will Wear to the Golden Globes
Lady Gaga is likely to be in for an exciting award season, given her impressive performance in A Star Is Born. While the singer is no stranger to the red carpet (she's got six Grammys), this season, her acting will be up for awards. Gaga's beauty style has evolved almost as drastically as her career has, and her days of dramatic entrances and over-the-top outfits seem to be over. Long gone are the days of arriving in giant eggs and sporting meat dresses that anger PETA. In 2019, we predict she'll be wearing some much more mainstream looks on the red carpet, starting with the Golden Globes on Jan. 6.
How can we tell? Over the past year, Gaga has worn some gorgeous beauty looks that had us doing a double take. Every look is classic and sophisticated, but with one major edgy twist. Whether it's an intricate hair braid or bold, dark eye makeup, we're confident that based off of her looks from the past year, she'll stick to the same formula at the Golden Globes.
Check out the compelling evidence ahead.

Just add glitter, and you're ready for your next holiday party.

We're here to tell you that it's possible. Sure, you might have to go out and pick up a tool or two (like a dotter, which you use to poke your nail beds with polish and create a polka-dot look in a few seconds flat) and a few additional metallic and glitter polishes, but that's a small price to pay for the prettiest nails at your next holiday party.
Ahead are a few of our favorite, supersimple New Year's Eve nail art looks.
Why Is Everyone Getting Botox Over the Holidays - and Where?
Summer has its influx of Rosé. October has pumpkins. The holiday season has stress, debt, and . . . Botox appointments? According to recent data by payments company Square, it's true: the time between Thanksgiving and New Year's sees a consistent spike in Botox and filler procedures each year, but its biggest boom in sales yet has been in 2018 - up 65 percent compared to last year's 44 percent.
There could be a multitude of reasons behind the surge, which has left doctors offices booked solid for two months. NYC dermatologist Cindy Yoon-Soo Bae, MD, suggests the most common is that people want to look their best for all the holiday parties, photos, and family get-togethers. This time also marks the "giving" season: "Believe it or not, but gifting Botox and lip injections, and even breast augmentations, has become very popular," said plastic surgeon Daniel Barrett, MD. "We have gift cards available and patients buy them as stocking stuffers. We even have mothers coming in treating their daughters to Botox for the holiday and friends coming in together on their lunch breaks."
"Using excess spending money to undergo cosmetic treatments that make you feel better about your appearance can create a bit of a respite from everything going on in the world today."
On the other hand: "For others, the season can be a difficult time of year, so treating themselves can be uplifting," she said. Michigan-based plastic surgeon Anthony Youn, MD, FACS, agreed, adding that the need for a mood boost is especially prevalent this year: "The economy is booming, unemployment is down, and yet there is turmoil and division in the country that makes people feel down," he said. "Using excess spending money to undergo cosmetic treatments that make you feel better about your appearance can create a bit of a respite from everything going on in the world today."
Studies do show that Botox can potentially improve your mood, thanks to a little thing Charles Darwin called facial feedback hypothesis - that is, when you don't register that you're frowning at Uncle Alan's crude comment between caroling, you're more likely to let it go. "Further studies are needed, but it makes sense if you think about it: if you make a sad or angry face, your brain responds to this emotional feedback," Yoon-Soo Bae said. "So if you cannot make these 'faces,' your brain will not process that you are experiencing a negative emotion."
As for where, and why, docs are seeing the biggest rise in numbers this year, we're counting down the top five cities with the most Botox sales. Some might surprise you - and who doesn't like surprises during the holidays?

The Team Behind Margot Robbie's Mind-Blowing Transformation Into Queen Elizabeth Spills the Tea
Four-hundred-something years before Meghan Markle had the power to send sheer pantyhose sales through the roof, it was Queen Elizabeth I who set the fashion and beauty trends. Everything from her hair to her eyebrows was carefully calculated, extravagant, and laced with cover-up - and Margot Robbie's mind-blowing transformation into the character takes center stage in Josie Rourke's new historical epic, Mary, Queen of Scots.
"When you're working with a modern actress who's got thick, beautifully shaped eyebrows, we've got to try and get rid of that."
Bringing a centuries-old look to fruition in 2018, though, was no easy feat. "In the Elizabethan period, women plucked away their eyebrows and the front of their hairlines because it was beautiful to have a high forehead and almost no eyebrows," the film's head of hair and makeup, Jenny Shircore, told POPSUGAR. "Elizabeth already had a high forehead, and she dictated fashion and beauty through how she looked. Of course, her features were very, very different from Margot's, and that was a bit of a challenge. When you're working with a modern actress who's got thick, beautifully shaped eyebrows, we've got to try and get rid of that in order to achieve the feel of the period."
Factor in the amount of hair dye needed for Queen Mary I (played by Saoirse Ronan)'s eyebrows, how Shircore researched without the internet, and the makeup it took to re-create Queen Elizabeth I's disfiguring illness, and you've got a production that was bound from the start to be a royal pain in the ass - and pretty damn powerful, too.

So, instead of gifting your grandma the same Ann Taylor blouse you always do - sorry, we're just speaking from experience here - try something a little more glamorous. This Is the Strength Exercise You Should Do For Stronger Abs and Legs and Better Balance
My style of training is all about strength, power, and speed. There are so many things you can do with strength, but one of my favorite things to work on in my personal workouts and with clients is unilateral movements. Why? Because you can isolate specific muscles and help reduce and eliminate muscular imbalances.
There are so many unilateral movements you can do such as pistol squats and a single-arm chest press (another great core move), and one of my favorites is the deadlift with a knee drive.
Deadlifts are one of the best exercises you can do for overall strength. With the addition of the knee drive, you're forced to work on your balance and core strength. Put it all together, and you've got yourself an intense compound exercise - multijoint movements that work groups of large muscle.
How to Do a Deadlift With a Knee Drive
- If you're a beginner, you can do this exercise without weight. For more advanced levels, grab a set of dumbbells. Ten pounds is a good starting point.
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand, and stand tall.
- Engage your core and keep your spine neutral as you begin to hinge at your hips, pushing your hips backward. At the same time, lift your left leg off the ground. Be sure to keep your left foot dorsiflexed (don't point your toes). Continue to hinge at your hips until your back is parallel to the ground; your leg should be in line with your back. Your back should be flat, and your head/neck should be in a neutral position.
- Return to your standing position without placing your left foot on the ground. Once you're upright, drive your left knee up, creating a 90-degree angle at your knee joint. Your left foot should still be dorsiflexed. Be sure to stay tall and keep your core engaged throughout the entire movement. This counts as one rep.
- Complete three sets of 10 reps on each leg.

If you feel soft in the middle, you can either thank your mother for inheriting her blessed genetic predisposition for belly flab or your sweet kiddos who were created there. Whatever the reason, if you'd much rather have a sleeker midsection, as a mom of two, I can totally relate.
Although it's impossible to spot-reduce fat from specific areas, we've enlisted the help of Christmas Abbott, CrossFit competitor and author of The Badass Body Diet ($28), to help us ditch our pinch-more-than-an-inch tummies. As a formerly "skinny fat" woman who transformed her body through CrossFit and a dialed-in diet, Christmas understands how real women feel and also what they need to do to get the body they crave. "Food is your foundation, and fitness is the accessory," says Christmas. She believes that every meal and snack needs to embrace the macronutrient trifecta of proteins, carbs, and healthy fats to help reduce overall body fat, which will aid in reducing stubborn belly fat.
Christmas explains that all food can be categorized into a protein, a carbohydrate, or a fat. "You can't go wrong by dividing your plate into thirds and filling each section with a primo protein, primo carbohydrate, and primo fat." There are only two foods Christmas says to avoid - processed foods and alcohol - since these contribute to unwanted fat. If you want to know specifics about how many of each to eat, The Badass Body Diet outlines a diet plan based on your personal body type and goals.
What about exercise? Short, high-intensity training sessions are proven to help reduce belly fat faster than steady-state cardio. Below are some great examples of this type of workout.
- 45-minute walk-run-sprint interval workout for beginners
- 10-minute HIIT video from celeb trainer Astrid McGuire
- 60-minute walk-jog workout
- 7-minute workout that targets belly fat
- 20-minute full-body HIIT video workout
- 30-minute pyramid interval workout for the treadmill
- Tush-toning interval workout with hill repeats
And once the belly fat begins to dissolve, you'll want to reveal a carved, toned core with this 10-minute ab workout. Working out three times a week is great if you're starting out, then you can add additional days as your body becomes stronger. As a CrossFit competitor, Olympic lifter, and head trainer at CrossFit HQ, Christmas also makes a point that your workouts should be fun so you stick with them longer.

To Stop Child Strangulation Deaths, Corded Blinds Will Officially Be Off the Market in Just 3 Days
One of the biggest dangers to children is still present in almost every home: window blinds with long cords that can easily get tangled around an unassuming infant or precocious toddler. In fact, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, corded blinds are listed as one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes.
But as of Dec. 15, in just three days, consumers won't be able to purchase blinds, shades, or other window coverings with long cords. The hope behind this historic industry-wide ban is that it will finally help eliminate deaths and injuries caused by blind-cord strangulation.
The new requirement applies to stock products, sold both in-store and online, which account for more than 80 percent of all window-covering products. The new safety standard maintains that all future sales must be solely for cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible or short cords.
The one exception? Custom orders. According to the standard, corded window coverings will still be available to those who need it, including the elderly, those with disabilities, and those with windows in hard-to-reach locations. Still, new restrictions are being put into place for these situations as well.
It's a sudden, major shift that will certainly have consumers wondering how the market will make cordless options more affordable, but - with American emergency rooms treating roughly two children each day for cord-related injuries over the past nearly 30 years - it's also been a long time coming.
The Best Stocking Stuffers For Your Toddler, No Matter Their Interests
Once your teeny baby becomes a toddler, personality development goes into overdrive and you find yourself with a curious little one who has so many interests (granted, some of those interests may be the neighborhood garbage men or the actual trash can in your kitchen). If you're stuck over what to get your toddler for the holidays, the key, in my opinion, is a bunch of little gifts that will keep them busy in different ways.
Check out our favorite small gifts for toddlers that will make their stockings so much fun to open.
1 Man Proposed to His Girlfriend With the Help of 16 Dogs, and Our Newsroom Is Collectively Shrieking
Laura Stampler, a writer and the author of the YA book Little Black Dresses, Little White Lies, has always been completely obsessed with dogs. So much so that when it came time for her boyfriend of four years - Maurice Goldstein - to propose, he brought along 16 pups to mark the occasion on a romantic hike in Runyon Canyon. Fortunately, Maurice enlisted the help of Los Angeles-based photographer Rebecca Yale to capture the memorable moment, and we're just in plain awe.
"I'm a big dog-lover - as is he," Laura told POPSUGAR. "We both grew up with rescues, and Maurice's family's German shepherd Scout actually goes running off-leash in the California mountains once a week with Pack of Hearts, a group run by Tony Vercillo." As a former staff writer for Time, she also got the chance to carve out a pet-related beat for herself, which included writing hilarious stories on "sexy Halloween costumes for pets."
Although Maurice and Laura had met three years beforehand, it wasn't until they matched on Tinder in 2014 that they got together. Fast forward four blissful years, and Maurice knew exactly how he was going to pop the question: with dogs from Pack of Hearts, of course! As soon as Laura said yes, the group of pups ran right toward her to offer up their own form of congratulations.
"I was beyond blown away. There were so many layers [of the proposal], and each dimension was specific to our relationship and shared interests."
"I was beyond blown away," said Laura. "There were so many layers [of the proposal], and each dimension was specific to our relationship and shared interests. From the singing (I was a huge choir nerd) to the dogs to one of my best friends capturing it all! And after that, Maurice took both our families to dinner - including my grandparents, which was incredibly meaningful."
Although the pair aren't planning on becoming full-on dog parents just yet, they recently got approved to foster through a rescue group called Muddy Paws - a NY-based organization that places dogs temporarily before finding their forever homes - and the timing couldn't be more perfect.
"We don't think we're ready for a full-time dog yet - we want to do some extended travel in the next couple years - but we would love to have dogs in our lives before then," said Laura, adding that, "We went to a foster event the week after we got engaged, have done our interviews, and have now been approved!"
Keep reading to get a look at the couple's jaw-dropping proposal and try not to get insanely jealous in the process.
Trust Us, You 100% Want to Receive Jonathan Van Ness’s Idea of the “Best Self-Care Gift Ever”
Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness is the queen of everything gorgeous - literally, the man says "gorgeous" every three words and it's absolutely, yes I'm going to say it, *gorgeous* - which includes indulging in self-care and taking moments for yourself to do things that make you feel good. As Queer Eye's resident hair and skin guru, it's no surprise to us that JVN's idea of self-care is heading off to the spa for a "little facial moment," but as parents, we know it's difficult to get away for long enough to relax in the spa (plus it's not always in the budget!).
I spoke to Jonathan at Target's Merry Mixer holiday event in NYC and asked him to offer us a JVN-approved self-care solution/gift idea for parents, and since most parents (and people in general) consider strolling the aisles of Target a fun date-night idea or a genius way to get themselves some "me time," his response was enough to make anyone swoon.
Spoiler alert: he's going to instruct you to shop at Target, and I think we can all make that happen if we must (spoiler alert, part two: no "gorgeous" references were harmed in the transcription of these quotes).
"I think a lot of times with parenting you don't have time to get to the dang spa to have a little facial moment."
"What a gorgeous, gorgeous question! I would do things that bring the spa to the home," he told POPSUGAR. "One of the things I love about Target is its naturals aisle - it's one of the best naturals aisles ever. What I would do would be a gorgeous at-home pedi set: a gorgeous exfoliant for your feet, a gorgeous heavy foot cream, and then a gorgeous, comfy pair of socks. And you could also do the same thing for the hands: a little exfoliant, a hand moisturizer . . . that's a gorgeous moment."
But wait, there's more - so, so much more, and it's making us want to run to Target, hole up at home in a warm bubble bath with a glass of wine, and just relax.
"There are so many really, really gorgeous skincare masks at Target, especially in the naturals aisle, so you could give those to someone, too. I think a lot of times with parenting you don't have time to get to the dang spa to have a little facial moment. The nice thing about a spa experience, whether it's a mani, pedi, or a facial, is the slowing down of things and the treating yourself - and you can totally do that at home (and it's totes cheaper!). You can simulate a spa at home, and that's just gorgeous."
So if you're still looking for gifts to buy for your friends or need an idea to tell someone getting a present for you, take a peek ahead at some of the items JVN mentioned and go to town on a little spa basket situation. It's seriously the easiest gift idea we've ever heard, but one that'll remind the recipient that it's OK to take a minute (ahem, "moment") for yourself, even if it's just to put on a gorgeous hydrating sheet mask.

Snuggly boy and his favorite toy.
#MakeCasperFamous
Posted by Marielle Tepe on Wednesday, November 28, 2018
No matter what I do for my cats - whether it's giving them extra treats at night or scooping out the litter box in a timely fashion - the chances of them being cute and snuggly with me always remain at around roughly zero percent. But for Marielle Tepe, bedtime with her tabby Casper is an entirely different ball game. Recently, she shared a truly adorable video of her kitty snuggling up to his all-time favorite stuffed animal, and it's enough to make our hearts melt. Marielle captioned the video "Snuggly boy and his favorite toy. #MakeCasperFamous" and honestly, we can't help but watch this video over and over again. It's just too damn sweet!
Mom Reveals a Rare Perspective on Husband Dying of Cancer: "We Have the Chance to Really Say Goodbye"
Cancer is a devastating disease - to say it ruins lives is an understatement. For one family, the illness will soon rip a beloved father from his wife and young child. But their perspective on life - and death - is one of hope and, surprisingly, appreciation.
Scott and Anne Sutton met as middle school students in Pennsylvania, but it wasn't until they reconnected at a mutual friend's wedding in 2011 that they fell in love. They were engaged two years later, they got married on Valentine's Day the next year, and it wasn't long before they welcomed their son, Alec, who is now 3 years old.
"It's really hard to find that balance of living life and not letting cancer take every single day away from you."
All the while, Scott has had medical issues - he has a hereditary condition called Von hippel-Lindau, and in 2009, doctors found a neuroendocrine tumor in his lung. They removed the bottom two lobes of that lung, and as Scott told POPSUGAR, "we had hoped that would be the last time anyone ever told me I had cancer."
Unfortunately, in January 2016, after months of lower back pain, he received even more upsetting news: he had another tumor, this one inoperable. "More tests would soon show that I also had neuroendocrine tumors in my liver, brain, and other parts of my bones," he said. It was deemed Stage 4. His son was just 8 months old at the time.
Throughout the next few years - which involved traveling around the world, including a stay at a hospital in Switzerland, to find a solution - the Suttons still managed to live a life similar to those of any other new parents, with a remarkable exception: Scott, along with his best friend, Alec Traub, wrote and published a children's book called I Love You Like . . . The story - illustrated by a cartoonist for the Garfield franchise - follows a grasshopper father explaining how much he loves his son. It's a sweet concept on its own, but it takes on profoundly deeper meaning knowing that it will one day serve as a reminder to young Alec of his late father's love.
Last month, Scott returned home from a three-week hospital visit, and he was given hospice care. "The doctors have given us an estimated time frame, and my goal is to have as many normal days at home with Anne and Alec as I can," he said.
With an honest perspective that in many ways is a rarity to witness, Scott, Anne, and their friend Alec opened up to POPSUGAR about what this experience has been like for them.
On Life With Their Son
From the beginning, when Alec was born in May 2015, Scott was "our rock," Anne remembered.
"Alec had colic," she said. "Cried and cried and cried. When I was sad that Alec was sad, Scott would take a photo of Alec crying on his phone and make it into a meme to make me laugh. He would send me photos of the vomit Alec spewed all over him while I was running an errand, to show that, 'hey, he does it to me, too.' I know I'm a better mom because of having Scott as my teammate."
And as Alec got older, his personality truly came into its own.
"Anne knows how I want to be remembered as a father, and I know she won't let me down."
"Alec is full of energy, always excited to see what's around the next corner," Scott recalled. "Incredibly empathic. Eats anything, including black olives. Seems to have a scary good memory - you can't pull anything past him you might have promised him a week ago. There's so much talent in there waiting to come out."
For Scott, Alec has been "the biggest joy of my life" and is "still excited" for all the amazing things to come in his future.
"My hope is that he'll do some of the things as a little boy that I did with my parents - I had a great childhood, so I'm excited he'll have one, too," Scott said.
On Writing a Book For His Son to Remember Him By
It's only a slight coincidence that Scott and Anne's son shares the same name as Scott's longtime friend, Alec. "It's sort of true we named our son after him," Scott said with a chuckle. "When Anne suggested the name as her number one choice, I immediately thought of Alec Traub and thought, 'would it be weird to name my son after a friend?' But he's a role model of a friend, and that's when I just knew it made sense."
In fact, for 15 years, the two had a silly tradition involving text messages that kept them close despite living in different states.
"Scott and I are two guys who never shied from telling one another how much we miss, love, and care for the other. One day, he randomly texted me, 'I miss you like the grasshopper misses grass . . . and hopping,'" Alec recalled. "I loved it, so then I texted him back, 'I miss you like the anteater misses ants . . . and eating.' It became our own fun, unique way to say I miss you."
When Alec visited Scott in Pittsburgh following his diagnosis in 2016, the two came up with the idea for a book.
"We were sitting all together talking about Scott's health and how much he wanted to be able to do something to leave behind for little Alec," Alec said. "We then immediately came to the idea of putting those text messages together and creating something for him. We had no idea where to go from there, but we knew it was something we couldn't afford to leave as just a cool idea. Time wasn't necessarily on our side."
So, they got to work. They watched YouTube videos about how to write a children's book, found a professional illustrator, and held Skype meetings until they were were ready to self-publish this past July. They've since sold more than 2,000 copies of I Love You Like . . ., and all of the profits go toward Alec's college fund. There's even a dedication to Scott's son, one of which any parent can relate: "For my son, Alec Sutton, who makes every day an adventure. Thank you for asking, 'Why?' each of the 1.4 million times. I love you buddy."
Selfishly, Alec is thankful for the book because, in their year working on it, the experience brought him and Scott even closer and taught him about taking something negative and flipping it.
"We turned that story into something so positive - for all of us," he said. "But if in the end, all it ended up being was something that I could create with Scott and that he could have for his son, then that was more than enough."
On Not Letting Cancer Change His Outlook
It's hard to imagine continuing on with the day-to-day once you receive a cancer diagnosis, but Scott was determined to keep a positive outlook.
"Even with everything that has been going on with me, there have been so many great things in my life worth living for," he said.
He and Anne share a few mottos - "always forward" and "worry when we must worry" to name a few - that, Scott said, "afforded us to live in the moment and truly just enjoy our time as a family."
"There are no bad memories. We did as much as we could together."
That time has included taking his son fishing for the first time, teaching him soccer, and even taking him to "Mickey's house," otherwise known as Disney World.
"There are no bad memories," he said. "We did as much as we could together, often packing the weekends full of activities with Alec and friends and family. We've built snowmen, we've gone minigolfing, I watched Alec ride a pony, we've seen the ocean . . ."
When asked what he hopes his son will remember most about him, he struggled to find words. "Anne knows how I want to be remembered as a father, and I know she won't let me down."
Her response?
"I won't," she said. "And I know there are family and friends who will share stories, too. Over the recent weeks, we've had friends who have visited who have promised Scott they will take Alec hunting with them and their own sons some day; other friends who live in other states promising that our kids will grow up knowing each other and knowing their dads were good friends."
On What They Wish Others Really Knew
Like any other typical parent, Scott knows that familiar feeling that there's always something more important to do, that we should be doing something productive like "taking care of that email in your inbox that needs done right away." But, he said, "what's really important is right in front of you. You have to try to enjoy every day with your family."
For Anne, she doesn't yet feel ready to reflect on what she's learned through her experience with Scott. But she did note that she now understands that there are appropriate times to be sad and grieve and times where you simply shouldn't.
"It's really hard to find that balance of then living life and not letting cancer take every single day away from you," she said. "We make a good team and worked through those feelings together, always making sure we were on the same page."
"We have the chance to really say goodbye in a special way. I don't want to say that we are lucky, because that doesn't seem quite right, either."
She even shared a rare upside to these years spent fighting cancer alongside her husband. Following the tragic shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that killed 11 people, Anne realized her family was given an opportunity that they've made sure not to squander.
"We've obviously been very sad since coming home on hospice care, working through a host of emotions," she said. "But when I heard the news stories of those innocent people losing their lives so unexpectedly, I sat here that day feeling even more sad for them. Today, even though we know what is to come, we know what's coming."
She continued: "Scott and I have the opportunity to reminisce, to laugh with each other while watching Alec play, to make sure as many friends and family visit as possible. We have the chance to really say goodbye in a special way. I don't want to say that we are lucky, because that doesn't seem quite right, either. Maybe just that it's not lost on us - the magnitude that there are people who didn't have the same opportunity that we do right now. We owe it to them to make the most of it."

How to Keep Kids' Winter Coats Clean All Season Long
Winter coats are one of those items in your home that probably don't get laundered as often as they should, especially your kids' coats. Luckily, washing them doesn't necessarily involve schlepping them to the dry cleaner's, and it's easier than you think. Whether your kids have down, wool, or fleece jackets - or all three - just make sure that with each method, you remove any items from the pockets.
1. Down Jackets
If you live in a cold climate, chances are your child has a down jacket, puffer vest, or similar style of Winter coat. For this kind of coat, be sure to treat any grimy areas (especially around the collar and the bottoms of the sleeves) with a stain treatment. Then, you can throw it in the washing machine on a cold, delicate cycle. And don't panic when it comes out of the laundry looking a little strange! Just pop it in the dryer on a low heat and low tumble cycle, and throw in some old tennis balls to help make the coat fluffy again.
2. Wool Coats
Wool coats are a little more delicate than down jackets but almost as easy to clean provided you follow the right steps. Again, you'll want to treat any particularly grimy and dirty areas with a pretreatment first. Using a wool-friendly detergent (like Woolite), put the wool coat in the washer on a gentle cycle - cold or warm works fine. For drying, do not put a wool coat in the dryer as it could cause shrinkage; instead, hang it to dry and use a steamer for any wrinkles.
3. Fleece Jackets
It's hard to beat the coziness of a fleece jacket, but they tend to attract and hold onto dirt and other grime more than other jackets. Before you wash fleece, be sure to turn the jacket inside out. Only wash fleece jackets with like colors and in cold water with a liquid detergent, and be sure to avoid loading the washer with other items that might produce lint. When it comes to drying, it's best to let fleece air-dry by laying it on a flat surface. If that's not an option or if you're in a rush, you can put fleece in the dryer on a low heat temperature to prevent damage.
