How to Catch a Glimpse of the Rare "Christmas Comet" in All Its Twinkly Glory This Week
Source: NICOLAS BIVER/AFP/Getty Images
Even the stars are celebrating the holidays this year. The 46P/Wirtanen comet, aptly nicknamed the "Christmas Comet" and first observed 70 years ago, was at its most visible in centuries on Sunday night. The twinkling comet set off a greenish glow into the sky, and at its point nearest the Earth, was about 30 times as far away as the moon.
"This will be the closest comet Wirtanen has come to Earth for centuries and the closest it will come to Earth for centuries," NASA scientist Paul Chodas said in a statement.
The location of the comet changes each night, but EarthSky has created a chart to plot its path so you can find out where in the sky to look for it as it passes by our planet. While the comet may be hard to spot with the naked eye, Chodas told NBC News "there's no harm in trying." Dedicated amateur astrologers may be better off using assistive gear like binoculars while the comet is still visible over the next few days.

When We're Traveling, We Need the Biggest Bag Imaginable, and We're Not Sorry About It
I keep the following things in my bag at all times: hair ties, hand cream, sunglasses, lip balm, lipstick, lip gloss, mints, a water bottle, barre socks, and enough snacks to last me at least three days. If Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year Comes as a Surprise, You Haven't Been Paying Attention
Merriam-Webster announced its timely Word of the Year: justice. Defined by the dictionary as the "conformity to truth, fact, or reason," among others, searches for the word were reportedly up 74 percent this year on the Merriam-Webster website. Beyond statistical reasoning, however, the word relates to significant events and headlines in 2018.
For starters, there's the ongoing investigation, led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, into the 2016 presidential election and interference from Russia. Another relevant event that comes to mind is the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing concerning the sexual assault allegations made against now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. As the world watched on Sept. 27, the tense hearing saw testimonies from both parties and impassioned bipartisan debates.
In addition to "justice," Merriam-Webster's other prominent words for the year include "nationalism," a word with racist and xenophobic connotations that was used by President Donald Trump at an Oct. 22 rally in Texas, and "pansexual," which Janelle Monáe used to describe her sexual orientation in an interview with Rolling Stone. Meanwhile, the words "respect," "maverick," and "excelsior" are also on the list, as they relate to three prominent figures who passed away this year: Aretha Franklin, John McCain, and Stan Lee.
Merriam-Webster's previous Word of the Year for 2017 was "feminism," which was shaped by the historic Women's March at the start of the year, as well as the #MeToo movement and pop culture releases like The Handmaid's Tale and Wonder Woman.

Oribe, Veteran Celebrity Hairstylist, Has Died at 62
Oribe Canales - renowned celebrity hairstylist and founder of his eponymous haircare line, Oribe - has died at 62, WWD confirmed. The cause of death was not immediately clear.
With a career that spanned more than three decades, Oribe's story could rival a song by Journey: it first began when the Cuban native immigrated to New York City in the late '80s, working with every supermodel from Naomi Campbell to Cindy Crawford. In the years that followed, he quickly became a fixture at fashion shows and red carpets, before going on to create a wildly successful namesake line of styling products in 2008.
Since the news of his death broke on Monday morning, there has been an outpouring of tributes from the people who worked with him, including Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Miley Cyrus, and Emily Ratajkowski.
Angela Ponce Is the First Transgender Woman to Compete in the Miss Universe Pageant
Catriona Gray of the Philippines may have claimed the Miss Universe crown on Sunday night, but she wasn't the only person who walked away from the night with a victory on her hands. Gray's fellow contestant Angela Ponce made history during the competition as the first openly transgender woman to compete in the pageant.
The 27-year-old was crowned Miss Spain back in June before heading to Bangkok, Thailand last week to compete with over 90 other competitors for the Miss Universe title. She didn't make it to the final round, but her presence in the competition still broke barriers. After being named Miss Spain, Ponce spoke to The Associated Press about her hopes of becoming a role model for young transgender children. "If my going through all this contributes to the world moving a little step forward, then that's a personal crown that will always accompany me," she said. Scroll ahead to see more photos of Ponce during Sunday night's competition.
Psst: Here Are My No-Fail Secrets to Getting the Perfect Winged Liner
My dramatic winged liner is usually the first thing people mention when they meet me. I've gotten comments like, "They're so perfect!" and "They're so sharp!" Well, I'd hope so - it took my 10 years to perfect.
I get it when people say they struggle with winged liner; my hand wasn't always the steadiest, and I did have to click around YouTube to see how to do it when I'd first started refining my technique. (Hint, it definitely takes practice and the right kind of pen.) In hopes to make it easier for first-timers, I'm sharing exactly how I apply my perfect cat-eye below.
- Step 1: Pick your tool. For a super-sharp cat-eye, I gravitate toward waterproof liquid eyeliner pens that have ultra-precise felt tip applicators and a formula that has slip, but is not too watery. My favorite is the Dior Diorshow On-Stage Liner in Vinyl Black ($31).
- Step 2: Line your lid up until the outer corner of your eye. Don't go any further.
- Step 3: Start your wing from the outer corner of your eye, and extend the line toward the end of your eyebrow. Stop halfway between the start of your line and your eyebrow.
- Step 4: Put the tip of your pen at the end of the line you just created, and drag your pen toward the line on your lid, and create a triangle.
- Step 5: fill in the triangle.
There you have it - big bold, beautiful wings, in just five quick steps.
Cardi B's Latest Makeup Look Is Brought to You by This Sold-Out Pizza Palette
Update: Glamlite's pizza-themed makeup palette just got a seal of approval from Cardi B. The rapper's longtime makeup artist, Erika LaPearl, revealed via Instagram on Sunday that she used the "epic" pizza palette on Cardi B for her set at Rolling Loud Music Festival this past weekend. In a separate photo, LaPearl detailed what colors she used on the rapper to complement her eccentric costume, which was a red, lace bodysuit with a fringe trim. She used the shades Kalamata Olives, Ham, Marinara, and Prosciutto, with some glitter that she added for that extra bit of drama.
The Pizza Palette is currently sold out on the Glamlite website - it ended up selling out in just 48 hours - but, according to a representative for the brand, it's still available for pre-order and will be back in stock in coming weeks.
This story was originally published on Dec. 11.
If you can very easily be won over by the thought or promise of pizza in any form (specifically, that of makeup), then you'll be elated to discover that your love for the pie has been taken to brand-new heights. It comes in the form of a pizza-themed eye shadow palette that's currently making us wonder why we've never seen anything like it (and why we've yet to add it to our online shopping cart).
The palette was created by Glamlite Cosmetics after the company's founder, Gisselle Hernandez, decided to combine her love of pizza and cosmetics. It comes with 18 different shades, all of which are named after beloved pizza toppings. A few examples include Jalapeños, a shimmery, forest green shade; Hot Sauce, a scarlet color made to resemble the bright red hue of actual hot sauce; and Kalamata Olives, a deep purple. The only topping that doesn't seem to be included in the palette is anchovies, which is probably for obvious reasons. The Pizza Palette is available online at Glamlite.com, where it retails for $40. See more photos of the product ahead.

Watch it yourself below - just make sure you wait until you're alone, because you won't be able to get through it without laughing.
I've Been Obsessed With This $13 Mascara For Months, and It's Finally Coming to America
I get a lot of questions about my lashes and the mascara I use; it tends to come with the territory when you cover beauty products. People actually start by asking if I have lash extensions, and when I explain it's just the mascara, they light up. The good news? My current favorite is from a mass brand. Then I have to gently let them down: unfortunately, the product isn't available in America.
Until now.
Meet your new mascara obsession: L'Oréal Paris Unlimited Lash Lengthening and Lifting Mascara ($13). (I wish the name meant "unlimited" in terms of expiration, because I'm nearing the end of my bottle.) I was in Paris for Fashion Week with the brand, and Unlimited was part of my welcome bag, which included this Paris-only offering. Thankfully, the brand is launching the product in America come January.
As a devoted Voluminous and Lash Paradise fan, I had high hopes for Unlimited when I first gave it a go. It delivered. Initially, I was intrigued by the bottle. It's not a typical tube; it's not square or circular. "It looks like a buoy . . . you know, in the ocean. Or an inflatable punching bag," my boyfriend said when I asked him to describe the shape. He's not wrong. (Don't tell him I said that, thanks.) If it were glass, it might look like a gorgeous bottle for a fragrance. The real point of difference, though, is the wand, which actually changes angles for more precision when you apply. You can use it straight or click it into a 45-degree angle, which is meant to help you get to the root of your lashes better.
For me, I barely change the position of the wand because I find I can get to the root easily without doing so, but this extra addition can make your mascara application a lot better. I tend not to love rubber or silicone applicators because I feel they don't make the lashes look light and fluffy. Unlimited, however, separates them, lengthens, and volumizes without weighing them down. It's a creamy formula that coats the lashes without lumping them together and with no flakes. Because what's worse than a flake, in both mascara and your social life?
Keep reading to see the Parisian photo shoot of the bottle, plus how it looks with both one coat and two coats on the lashes.

Benefit's Roller Lash Mascara Just Got An Exciting New Sister Product
This year, Benefit Cosmetics launched three products: Bad Gal Bang! Mascara, Hello Happy foundation, and Brow Contour Pro. It's been awhile since the brand launched an eyeliner - They're Real Gel Liner was born in 2014 - and given it was based around They're Real Mascara, it's time the brand's newest launch is in the liner category and fitting that it is a companion to a highly sought-after mascara.
Roller Liner ($22) is in the Roller Lash mascara family, hence the name. It's a felt-tipped liquid liner pen that promises a 24-hour matte finish that "doesn't drag or jag" and comes in black and brown. Currently, the brand has They're Real Gel Push-Up Liner and Bad Gal Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil. There's also Magic Ink, which is a liquid liner, but it's not in pen form, and it's only sold in the UK. If you found They're Real difficult to apply given its unique formula and applicator, it sounds like Roller Liner may be right up your alley.
We're testing the liner this week, and we'll be sure to report back to let you know if it really delivers. Eager to give it a try? It launches online and in stores on Jan. 4, 2019. Will you be rolling into 2019 with Roller Liner?
