After You See These 11 Comfortable Boots, You Won't Want to Wear Anything Else

As much as we all love a fashion-forward boot, if it's not comfortable, we aren't wearing it. This is especially true in Winter, because when boots take up their own section of the closet, comfort is key. We need to be able to wear these boots all day long and not worry about hobbling home. Enter the shearling boot. Made popular by the classic UGG Australia boot, more and more designers are now creating cute, comfortable shearling boots that you're going to want to live in. These are our absolute favorite picks; you can thank us later.

Tracee Ellis Ross' Sequin Suit and Badass Sneakers Are Actually a Tribute to the Women in Congress

Tracee Ellis Ross is giving us all the damn glam we could possibly desire. The 46-year-old actress attended the W Magazine Golden Globes pre-party in LA on Jan. 5, and opted for a dazzling outfit with some extra special meaning behind it. According to Tracee's stylist, Karla Welch, the Blackish actress's ensemble was meant to pay homage to "our ladies in Congress." This is certainly a powerful look that commands attention - a perfect tribute to the women of DC!

We've come to expect fierce fashion from Tracee, from her colorful red carpet gowns to her bold and beautiful bikinis. That's why we love her! Tracee's custom sequin Carolina Herrera suit and red and white Nike Air Force Ones sure do fit the bill - and we know she loves her sneakers. She paired the outfit with a glittering drawstring bag and dangling Butani diamond earrings. Ahead, see even more of Tracee's powerhouse look, including a peek at those unexpected sneaks.

The Dresses at the 2018 Golden Globes Looked Different For a Very Good Reason

With plenty of Hollywood's stars coming together to support the black dress initiative (a protest against sexual harassment that might extend to future red carpets, too), we were prepared for a 2018 Golden Globes that struck a different tone. As far as fashion was concerned, women skipped out on all the glamour and forwent risky designs for looks more muted in tone.

Collectively, that made for quite the statement - as did the Time's Up pins spotted among the crowd. These special accessories were brought to life by Reese Witherspoon and spoke to the message of the evening in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. As you can see, while we still watched to see what everyone wore, we were also in tune to the motive behind the style code. It was plain proof that clothes can hold a lot of weight.

Ahead, see every arrival of the night as you anticipate the looks at the 2019 ceremony.

Just a peek at her Instagram posts, and it looks like she's having the time of her life on her holiday getaway. In a two-piece like that, wouldn't you be the same way? 100+ Street Style Looks That Defined 2018

I hadn't seen biker shorts worn with such fervor since my family's '91 trip to Disney; sequins took the streets in broad daylight (fun fact: I spotted a girl waiting for the bus in a paliette-covered pencil skirt before 8 a.m.); white boots had become more ubiquitous than a pair of blue jeans. Beyond the runway, it's these trends that defined street style in 2018.

Sure, if you had told us two years ago that we'd be styling biker shorts with blazers, we'd likely have laughed it off and pulled on our mom jeans, thankyouverymuch - but this year's style stars convinced us to dive right in. Not just that, either. We added logo bags to the rotation, threw on our shoulder bags (crossbody style!), and added cowboy boots and animal prints to mix things up. This year gave us nostalgia reimagined with a contemporary lens; in a nutshell, there was enough new outfit inspiration to last 365 days and then some. So, you'll forgive us if we'll be wearing these looks well into 2019.

Read on to relive the best street style looks of 2018, but feel free to file these away for future reference, too.

The Acoustic Version of Miley Cyrus' "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart" Is So, So Gorgeous

Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus's new song, "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart," is a bop reminiscent of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" that we haven't been able to stop playing since its surprise drop in December. While the intense, meaningful imagery in the music video got people talking at first, Cyrus's brand new, acoustic take on the track will blow you away all over again. (People who watched her perform the song on Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago will likely find it sounds familiar.) Listen to it above, then see why her recent Ariana Grande cover is bringing fans to tears.

A (Potentially Genius) Bachelor Contestant Used a Fake Australian Accent to Stand Out

A contestant vying for Colton Underwood's attention on The Bachelor used a stunning tactic upon meeting her would-be fiancé. No, she didn't arrive in a motorized cupcake or dress up in a shark costume. (Or was it a dolphin?) Brianna "Bri" Barnes simply showed off her charming Australian accent. The thing is . . . she's not Australian.

In a new promo shared ahead of the forthcoming season's release on Jan. 7, the 24-year-old model from Los Angeles put on subtle accent during her first meeting with Colton, which prompted him to ask where she's from. Bri responded, "The accent, it's Australian. I was hoping that you're kind of a sucker for accents." The thing is, Bri never said she's Australian - she simply said the accent is. Bri is a goddamn genius.

There is a slight issue, however. What's the game plan here? Is Bri going to use this accent throughout the season? The first episode? When she finally does tell Colton the truth, will he be charmed or concerned? Either way, I can't wait to see this unfold as they crash and burn - I mean, fall in love.

Watch Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next" Bloopers For 1 Hilarious Reason: Kris Jenner

Ariana Grande, groundbreaking Coachella headliner and 2018 MVP, has graciously shared a blooper reel from filming her hit music video "thank u, next," and yes - it's everything. In addition to featuring her take on the Legally Blonde scene when Elle helps Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) get her dog back from her ex-husband, the four-minute video includes plenty of outtakes from Kris Jenner's scenes as the "cool mom" from Mean Girls.

Not only do we get to see more of Jenner dancing in the audience while Grande and the rest of her Mean Girls crew dance onstage at the talent show, but there's also a clip of her telling a fellow mom in the theater what her tricks were to raising her daughter. "When I was raising Ariana, I always told her that if a guy ever f*cks with her, she should just say 'thank you, next,'" she said. "And if she ever had sex without a condom, she would get chlamydia and die."

Watch the hilarious bonus footage above, then check out all the Easter eggs Grande hid in the "thank u, next" video!

Jennifer Garner Says She Taught Bradley Cooper “Everything He Knows” in Sweet Birthday Message

Bradley Cooper has Jennifer Garner to thank for his successful career. Well, at least according to Jennifer. On Saturday, the actress posted an endearing birthday message to Bradley, who turned 44 years old. She shared a picture of the two on set of the early 2000s show Alias. In the snapshot, the two are laughing and embracing each other. "I taught him everything he knows," Jennifer quipped. "Happy Birthday, Bradley. Go get em tomorrow. We are all so proud of you."

In the series Alias, Jennifer played lead character and secret spy Sydney Bristow. Bradley portrayed Will Tippin - one of Sydney's friends and a local reporter who finds himself pulled into Sydney's milieu of espionage.

Although the show ended in 2006, Jennifer and Bradley have maintained a pretty solid friendship. They shared the screen again in the 2010 film Valentine's Day and reunited at the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards show. Three years later, they sat front row at the 2016 Fall/Winter Versace show in Paris. And if that's not a testament to their friendship, then Jennifer lovingly roasting Bradley at the 32nd Annual Cinematheque Awards in November definitely is.

So Sunday night, if Bradley ends up winning a Golden Globe for best actor and/or best director for A Star Is Born, we know who he should mention in his acceptance speech!

Someone FINALLY Asked Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman About Playing the Same Character

In case you didn't know, Michael B. Jordan's and Chadwick Boseman's paths crossed long before they shared the big screen in Black Panther. The Marvel costars recently sat down for a joint interview with The Wrap's Oscar magazine and were finally asked about their shared credit in the show All My Children. Back in 2003, they both portrayed the character Reggie Porter. Boseman, who was 25 at the time, played Reggie first, appearing in a few episodes from Jan. 2 to Jan. 14. He was then fired for taking issue with the stereotypical character. Jordan, who was 15, took his place shortly after.

When asked about the retrospective coincidence, Boseman and Jordan shared a laugh. "This is the first time anyone has ever asked about that! We've done this so much, and you're the guy, you're the one," Jordan quipped.

Boseman then went on to address how he got fired. "It's one of those things where you get a role, and you don't really know," he told The Wrap. "When I got it, I was like, 'This is not part of my manifesto. This is not part of what I want to do. How can I make it work?' Because with a soap opera, you don't know the full scope of what's gonna happen - you don't know where they're gonna take the character, because they don't always know where the character is going. And because of that, there's possibly room for me to adjust this and change it and make it so it's stereotypical on the page but not on the screen."

Michael B. Jordan playing Reggie in All My Children.

After expressing his uneasiness about the part, the producers let him go. Although Boseman had to leave the show because of his concerns, he believes the producers still took heed to his worries and made some minor adjustments to the character. "I had to voice my opinions and put my stamp on it. And the good thing about it was it changed it a little bit for him," he said in reference to Jordan. "They said, 'You are too much trouble,' but they took my suggestions, or some of them. And for me, honestly, that's what this is about."

Jordan, who seemed surprised at the backstory, then chimed in. "It's so wild to hear you say that," he responded. "I'm younger than Chad, and I was coming into All My Children fresh off The Wire - wide open, still learning. I was playing this role not knowing that a lot of the things I was going through were because of what he'd already done for me. It's hard to speak in the moment about how things we do can affect other people. But this is a pure example, right here on the spot - we ain't never talked about this before a day in our lives - to understand how what people do now can directly affect what other people do in the future. And the work that we're doing on Black Panther is hopefully doing the same thing for the next group of actors that are coming up, just like our predecessors opened up doors and made things easier for us."

Colton's Season of The Bachelor Is Already Facing Controversy Over a Contestant's Tweets

The Bachelor franchise is facing another controversy days before its season premiere. In early December, tweets resurfaced from a contestant on Colton Underwood's season that contained criticism toward people who compete on dating shows, body-shaming language, and the R-word. Colton has since addressed the controversy, after the contestant, 31-year-old wardrobe stylist Tracy Shapoff, issued an apology.

Dug up by various fans of the franchise, there are several tweets mocking "ugly" and "fat" people. Another tweet criticizes cab drivers who are immigrants: "Don't come to America until u learn how to speak the language and don't drive cabs if u don't know the city." In another tweet, Tracy used the R-word to describe people who get liposuction, adding, "Stop wasting your money and just get your fat ass to the gym." In an ironic twist, Tracy also made fun of people who think they are "finding love on reality TV."

After the news broke, Tracy shared an apology on Instagram. "I want to start by expressing my sincerest apologies for the extremely hurtful words I said many years ago," she wrote. Adding, "In the many years since writing those tweets, I have made a conscious effort not to be judgmental and to be accepting of all people." Tracy went on to say that through her job as a stylist, she helps her clients "have positive images of themselves, their bodies, and feel beautiful in who they are."

That then left Colton to address the backlash. When asked at a recent press conference if The Bachelor needs to enact more diligent background checks - specifically looking into contestants' social media - Colton said, "That's not up for me to decide, obviously, but as the Bachelor, it's a good opportunity for me to really get to know these women and form my own opinions of them without really seeing that." He added, "While I don't believe in whatever Tracy liked and tweeted at the time, I think that it's a growing thing . . . But the bottom line is, that's not up to me, that's not my department or anything I need to have an opinion on."

The incident comes after two contestants on Becca Kufrin's season of The Bachelorette had controversial backgrounds. Garrett Yrigoyen, who would go on to get engaged to Becca on the show, faced criticism over "liking" Instagram posts mocking immigrants, feminists, and transgender people. Another contestant, Lincoln Adim, was convicted of indecent assault and battery right before the season premiere for a 2016 incident. While it's unlikely that Tracy's tweets will be addressed on the show, it's certainly something that will continue to come up if and when she progresses in the show.

Beyoncé Sang Happy Birthday to Her Mom at a Surprise Party, and Now My Heart's a Puddle

Happy Birthday, Tina Lawson! The mother of Beyoncé and Solange Knowles turned 65 on Jan. 4 and celebrated her day in style, with an epic surprise party thrown by her husband Richard. A group of her nearest and dearest gathered to honor her, including Queen Bey and JAY-Z. Much like on Jay's birthday, Beyoncé treated the crowd to her vocal talents as she sweetly led everyone in singing to the guest of honor.

Beyoncé and Tina have been known for their unbreakable bond over the years. Tina penned her own heartfelt birthday message for her daughter back in September, calling Bey the "owner of the most beautiful, generous, loving [heart] ever!!!!" It's no wonder Beyoncé was all smiles as she watched her mom get showered with affection. The love runs deep between these two! The Author From Black Mirror: Bandersnatch Isn’t Real, But Likely Inspired By This Writer

The release of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch premiered a more interactive form of bingeing Netflix, the likes of which hadn't ever seen on the platform. The alluring "choose your own adventure" film allows you to make decisions for the main character, computer game programmer Stefan Butler played by Fionn Whitehead, which influence how the film will end. A main part of the story is that Stefan is developing a video game based on the book Bandersnatch by Jerome F. Davies. But who is the author?

No spoilers here since it's revealed early on, but Davies has a gruesome story. Driven insane by paranoia, he ends up decapitating his wife. He suffered from extreme delusions and believed she had been drugging him. Later on, which you can see in the trailer for the film, Stefan is holding a book titled The Lives of Jerome F. Davies - so we probably aren't the only ones wondering if this Davies guy is based on a real person.

Although the author isn't real, it's suspected that the character was based off of late science fiction writer Philip K. Dick. At a point in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, you can even see a poster of Dick's futuristic novel Ubik. Many of his books address psychological struggles, much like Davies. (No, Philip K. Dick did not have a breakdown and murder anyone.) Although we don't have confirmation on the character inspiration, the connection between Dick and Davies is hard to ignore.

Game of Thrones: If You Haven't Heard This Seven Deadly Sins Theory, You're in For a Treat

With the season eight premiere of Game of Thrones just a few months away, there's not much time left to theorize about how this epic story is going to end. Thankfully, there are still some cool theories on the internet that are just intriguing and unexpected enough that they could end up being true. Reddit user lobcity414 recently shared one such theory with fans. They suggest that Game of Thrones is, in part, a Biblical allegory and that the Night King might not be the ultimate evil we think that he is.

Let's start at the top. Lobcity414 begins their theory by stating that each of the great houses of Westeros represents one of the seven deadly sins. Now, there's some debate about the houses mentioned in the theory and which sin they should represent, but the theorist breaks them down like this: House Tyrell represents greed, House Baratheon is rage, House Targaryen is envy, the Martells are gluttony, House Frey represents sloth, House Stark is the embodiment of pride, and finally, House Lannister is lust.

Looking back on the series, an argument can be made for each of these correlations. For instance, pride could be seen as Ned, Robb, and Jon Snow's greatest downfalls. Remember, Ned dies because he refuses to lie about Joffrey, Tommen, and Myrcella's paternity, even if it means he could potentially survive for his own children. His desire to preserve his sense of honor at all costs leads to his house crumbling in his absence.

Which house represents which sin is just part of the theory. The key to this theory is that each one of the great houses of Westeros is corrupt in some way. They're all an embodiment of sin, and the old gods may be on a mission to set things right. The theory suggests that the Night King and his army aren't inherently evil. Instead, they're weapons of destruction being wielded by the old gods, who aren't happy about the state of Westeros. It's been stated on more than one occasion that the old gods have been forgotten outside the North. Instead, people seem more inclined to worship the Seven or the Lord of Light. That makes it all the more interesting that the greatest threat to the Seven Kingdoms is coming from the deepest part of the North.

In the Bible, God sends a great flood to wipe out all of mankind except for Noah, his family, and the animals they bring with them on their ark. The Night King and his army could be Westeros's version of the great flood - a cleansing designed to give the Seven Kingdoms a fresh start and turn the remaining people back to the old ways and the old gods. There's no doubt this is a cynical theory. At its heart, it suggests that the flawed nature of the core families is so great that they must be eradicated in order for Westeros to flourish. That bit feels flimsy since the show is all about embracing the fact that no one is completely evil or good. However, the idea that the Night King isn't just a bad guy, but rather an agent for something much larger than we could ever expect, is intriguing.

If the Night King portion of the theory proves to be true, then Game of Thrones could be heading for a far bleaker ending than we previously thought. After all, only one family survived the Biblical flood, and if the same thing happens in Westeros, then the fate of the Seven Kingdoms will be sealed.

We're Already Concerned About When The Bachelor's Finale Will Air - Here's What We Know

The minute a new season of The Bachelor begins, there are multiple questions that come rushing into our minds. Who does he choose? Does he propose? Are they still together now? And all of those questions get answered on finale night(s). Colton Underwood's journey to love is no exception to our slew of curiosities, so we're already theorizing when all of our season 23 questions will get answered.

The finale date hasn't been announced yet, but being the detectives we are, we're homing in on when it could be. Last year's finale with Arie Luyendyk Jr. was a two-parter on March 5 and 6. In 2017, we found out Nick Viall's fate on March 13. And before that, Ben Higgins's final episode aired on March 14.

Now, I'm no Chris Harrison, but I suspect that the finale night or two will be either the first or second Monday (and possibly Tuesday) of March. That means you shouldn't make any plans for March 4 and 5 or 11 and 12 until we know for sure. While you wait for that, catch up on what every Bachelor has been up to since their own finales.

More Like Mariah Carefree! See the Singer’s Sexy New Bikini Snaps

Apparently, Mariah Carey took it upon herself to spruce up my Instagram feed. Over the weekend, the 48-year-old songstress posted a few pictures of her looking incredible in a pink bikini while vacationing in St. Barth's with her boyfriend, Bryan Tanaka, and 7-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe. She poses both in and out of a pool in the snapshots and simply captioned one of them, "Happy," followed by a smiley face and red heart emoji. In all of the photos, Mariah flashes a big grin while looking as free as can be in the two-piece.

She certainly has a lot to smile about, considering the past couple of months that she's had. In November, her 15th studio album, Caution, hit No. 1 on Billboard's top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. Then, at the very beginning of the new year, her classic Christmas tune, "All I Want For Christmas Is You," reached No. 1 on Australia's singles chart.

So maybe she's all smiles because she's continued to be a musical maestro for nearly three decades. Or maybe she's just enjoying life. Either way, she looks stellar in the bikini pictures, and we all need to admire them.

Ruby Rose Is Officially Joining the Arrowverse as The CW's Batwoman

It's official: The CW is moving forward with the Ruby Rose-led Batwoman series.

The caped crusader made her debut as the special guest for the network's three-way DC series crossover event "Elseworlds" on Dec. 10. Now, The CW has handed out a pilot order for the standalone series that David Nutter, an Arrow and The Flash vet, will be directing. If all goes well, the series is slated for a potential release in Fall 2019 and helmed by the mastermind of DC's small-screen universe, Greg Berlanti. The series will join the squad of popular DC series at The CW, which includes Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Black Lightning.

According to the show's official logline, Batwoman tells the story of Kate Kane, who, "armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence. But don't call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham's symbol of hope."

Rose's Batwoman is the first time that the character has appeared on any screen, so an entire series about her is amazing! The Vampire Diaries's Caroline Dries penned the script and executive produced along with Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns. Batwoman is the third member of the Bat family to get an onscreen adaptation, after Batman himself and Batgirl, whose standalone film is currently under development with Joss Whedon signed on to write, direct, and produce the film.

Our Wish Has Come True - See the Magical Photos From Disney's Live-Action Remake of Aladdin

Our wish is Disney's command! Ever since the studio announced that it was producing a live-action remake of Aladdin, fans of the classic tale have been anxious to see any sort of sneak peek at what the film will look like. In October, the the magical trailer dropped, and two months later, Entertainment Weekly released exclusive pictures of the talented cast as their characters (you HAVE to see Will Smith as Genie).

Thankfully, because Disney is so generous, we have even more images from the film! Look on to see Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and more in the photos ahead.

Here's How Long It's Been Since True Detective's Last Episode - and When Season 3 Starts

It seems like it's been forever since HBO's eerie crime drama True Detective was on our screens. In fact, it's been over three years since the series took a long hiatus following a very poorly received second season. (That season, which starred Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch, aired from June to August 2015.)

With a brand-new cast and story to tell, the new season stars Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali as a former detective being interviewed for a true-crime documentary about a missing-children case he failed to crack long ago. For fans of the series, the wait has been incredibly long already - how much longer do we have to go?

Not long at all, luckily! The debut of season three is set to air on Sunday, Jan. 13, at 9 p.m. on HBO. Eight episodes are scheduled in all for the season. If you're not in front of a regular TV when the season debuts, that's OK too! As with other shows on HBO, True Detective will also be available for streaming immediately on HBO Go, HBO Now, and HBO On Demand. Wherever you choose to watch, you'll soon be able to dive into one of the show's trademark twisty mysteries again!

Why This Controversial Organizing Method Is Exactly What You Need

Letting go of clutter is hard to do. Anyone who has encountered the teachings of Japanese cleaning guru Marie Kondo knows that minimalism is currently all the rage; her housekeeping manual, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has inspired legions of readers to throw away their unneeded belongings. And now her Netflix series, Tidying Up, is ushering in a new wave of devotees. We love all things related to organization and have to admit to clearing out our drawers and closets in a fit of aspirational tidying ourselves.

Not everyone, though, is on board with KonMari, the nickname Kondo gave her techniques. As with any good trend, there's a corresponding backlash. A writer for The New York Times extolled the virtues of living a life surrounded by things in an article called "Let's Celebrate the Art of Clutter." Plus, her stance on ridding your home of books that don't "spark joy" has had book-lovers up in arms.

Whether you're pro- or anticlutter, you must admit there's a certain calmness to be found in a well-organized drawer. Read through to see aspirational examples of Marie's method at work, and see if you aren't a little inspired to take a turn at organizing your own home.

A Calorie Comparison of Your Favorite Beers

If you're watching your waistline and enjoying an ice-cold brew, then might want to do a little research and how beers compare (or you might just want to sit back and enjoy your IPA, in that case no need to read further). The calorie counts may surprise you. Here's the nutritional info for one glass, can, or bottle of beer (about 12 ounces). Keep in mind that even though there may be health benefits associated with drinking alcohol, they only come with drinking in moderation. For women, that means one drink a day.

If You Hate Running but Still Want to Lose Weight, We Have Some Good News

If you've read anything about losing weight over the past few decades (and odds are, if you're reading this article, you have), then you've probably come across the conventional wisdom that cardio is necessary for burning calories and revving up your weight loss. One of the most popular forms of cardio is running; the treadmills at the gym are always packed, boutique fitness classes such as Orangetheory Fitness and Barry's Bootcamp have popularized running intervals, and half-marathons are more popular than ever.

But as much as running has been hyped for weight loss, it's certainly not the only activity you need to do to shed fat and get in shape. "Effective weight loss involves both cardio and resistance training," registered dietitian and ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, told POPSUGAR.

How to Exercise For Weight Loss

So while running is a great form of cardio, it's not the only type of cardio activity that will help you meet your goals. "Cardio would be the activities that get your heart rate up, such as walking, swimming, biking, elliptical, and jumping rope," Jim said. So as long as an activity gets your heart rate up, ideally 50 to 85 percent of your max heart rate, which is 220 bpm, it counts as a good cardio workout.

But it's not just cardio that will help you lose weight; strength training is important, too. Jim explained that resistance training is bodyweight training, lifting weights, using weight machines, or moves you would do in a fitness class, like squats. "Resistance training builds endurance and muscle," he explained. "Since muscle is the engine that burns calories when you are resting, your body can still continue to burn calories for hours after strength training."

Cardio helps you burn calories and create a calorie deficit, but it's more of a short-term activity. Strength training is more like an investment: as you burn calories during exercise, you also continue to burn more calories at rest. Armen T. Ghazarians, ACSM-certified personal trainer and CEO of Finish Fit, recommends strength training three to five times a week for weight loss, ideally at a high intensity. He added that building muscle will help you burn body fat.

How to Eat For Weight Loss

So great, you don't need to run to lose weight. But exercise is just part of the equation; weight loss requires that you eat in a calorie deficit. To find out how many calories you should eat a day to lose weight, use this formula. Jim said that while cardio may put you in a calorie deficit, it's more of a short-term solution, since strength training will help you build muscle and burn more calories at rest.

In general, your diet should also be dialed in. Scarlet Full, RDN, Director of Nutrition and Research at Axiom Foods, said that you should eat mostly whole foods and limit processed packaged foods. And while you should limit junk food, you don't need to cut it out entirely (everything in moderation!) - just make sure your diet is mostly a lot of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. She also added that protein is important for weight loss because it will keeping you feeling full and satisfied. Plus, with strength training and working out, eating protein will help you build the lean muscle to burn more calories at rest. To find out exactly how much protein you should be eating to meet your goals, use this equation.

5 Health-Focused New Year’s Resolutions You Should NOT Be Making

It's crunch time. New Year's Eve is around the corner and, inevitably, you've been thinking more about your outfit than your resolutions. Many people make goals focused on a healthier body - whether that means eating better or working out more, or both! While you brainstorm on how you want to better yourself in this upcoming year, consider these five things off of the list.

Watch Brie Larson Defy Gravity With Her Intense Rock-Climbing Workout

Just in case you were wondering, I constantly refresh Brie Larson's Instagram feed, waiting for her to post her latest workouts. She trained insanely hard for Captain Marvel (is it March yet?!), and even though filming is over, she hasn't ceased to amaze me with her workouts. First it was push-ups with weighted chains, then 400-pound hip thrusts, and now it's her rock-climbing skills.

In the video Brie shared on Instagram, she's seen bouldering, which is harder than standard rock climbing because you don't use a harness or safety ropes. She starts climbing a vertical wall, goes upside down (jokingly calling this her "self-tape for the role of Spider-Man"), and then comes back down vertically on the other side.

Her trainer Jason Walsh's commentary pretty much sums up everyone's thoughts: "Holy sh*t. Are you kidding me?"

I Tried the Keto Diet, and I Hated Every Second of It

Let me just start with a few disclaimers, because I know a few of you are already mad at me just based on the headline alone. I agreed to try the keto diet in early 2018 as a POPSUGAR editor experiment - not because I needed to for medical or weight-loss reasons. The goal was to see how my body felt switching from a moderate-carb diet to a very, very low-carb, high-fat diet (spoiler: not good). I had the right tools, including a clinical nutritionist versed in keto on speed dial and a program with recipes and lists of foods I could and could not eat.

When the plans were made, I had anticipated completing a 30-day program. I shopped at Whole Foods to get lamb and steak, refined my Bulletproof coffee recipe, and learned orders at local restaurants that were keto-approved just in case (hello, Chipotle).

Things fell apart for me pretty much immediately. Perhaps I'm a carb addict who needs a detox or perhaps this diet just wasn't for me - but I started to feel unwell by the end of the first day. A series of headaches crept in, which apparently are common when you're purging your body of carbohydrates. In this case, it's called the keto flu . . . and I got the keto flu in the worst way. My nutrition coach advised eating green apples and drinking lots of tea, as well as adding in fresh herbs to my meals. This was supposed to mitigate the keto flu, so I followed the advice.

A day later, despite taking those steps, the headaches were worsening. I was so, so tired and couldn't focus on work (hello, brain fog); my coworkers even noticed how unproductive I was (embarrassing). All I wanted to do was sleep! But I knew it was "normal" and that keto flu would soon fade, so I pressed on. I felt like a keto warrior and figured I just had to break through to the other side, right?

Wrong. I was not a keto warrior, but rather a keto disaster.

Days three through five consisted of an unending headache, all culminating in an 18-hour migraine finale; needless to say, I hit the carbohydrate-packed panic button real quick at that point. I decided the experiment and diet trial weren't worth the pain I went through with keto flu - I didn't want to lose weight, and I didn't need the ketogenic diet to treat any medical condition. So yeah, I gave up.

I inhaled ate a bagel on the morning of day six, and it felt like a wave of relief crashed over me. Best bagel of my life.

After I resumed eating my usual carb-infused yet balanced diet, I was a bit worried that I'd "balloon," as many people do after trying keto temporarily. 'Twas not the case, friends. The only thing that I got after adding carbs back in was migraine relief. Sweet, sweet migraine relief.

So yeah. I tried; I failed. Some people thrive on this diet - I've seen it firsthand! But remember that no one diet is perfect for every single person's body. Listen to your body, and work with a doctor and nutritionist or dietitian you trust to make sure you're not putting yourself through hell for no reason. And yes, I think a life without carbs is my own personal hell.

The Benefits of Drinking Matcha (Spoiler: It Gives You Energy Without the Crash)

If you're one of those people who needs three cups of coffee or more to get through your day, you may want to consider making the switch to matcha. Although the beautifully green beverage has only made its way to American cafe menus in recent years, matcha has been a staple of Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries. In addition to having a full-bodied, grassy flavor, this fine powder contains a higher amount of caffeine and antioxidants than green tea. One teaspoon is all that's required to prepare a cup. But the benefits don't stop there - matcha is packed with antioxidants and offers a steadier caffeine fix than coffee does. Let us break it down for you.

1. Matcha is high in antioxidants.

Matcha, like green tea is high in catechins, an antioxidant believed to have cancer-fighting properties. On top of being grown, harvested, and processed differently than regular green tea, matcha is far more concentrated than loose leaf tea, allowing you to enjoy its nutrients in their entirety. Since matcha is ground to a powder, more antioxidants are available with each sip; one estimate claims that matcha offers 137 times the catechins that are in green tea.

2. You won't crash from drinking matcha.

Matcha contains the amino acid L-theanine (known to reduce anxiety and high blood pressure), which combats the jittery side effects of caffeine while still allowing matcha to provide a stable and longer-lasting focus without the crash some associate with coffee.

3. It may aid in weight loss.

Green tea contains the powerful antioxidant EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which has been shown to promote weight loss and boost metabolism. A small study has also suggested that matcha's EGCG may boost the ability to burn a bit more fat during exercise. Although more research on human subjects is needed, matcha tea provides a rich, subtly sweet flavor without the addition of sugar or cream. Plus, it contains very few calories, making it a healthy option overall.

The quality of your matcha can make all the difference - especially when it comes to taste. The best tasting varieties are typically ceremony grade (creamy and sweet), while kitchen grade is at the lower end of the spectrum.

An Expert Says Doing This 1 Thing Will Make You Stronger

We've all arrived at the gym, quickly throwing our belongings into a locker and jumping straight into our workout. This may seem harmless, but warming up is critical to maximizing your workout, which can help make you stronger since all your work will be more effective. If this alone hasn't convinced you, just look at what athletes at all levels do before a competition. If they're a hurdler, they practice going over the hurdles a few times, they make sure their fast twitch muscles are firing, and they get ready to run fast.

The primary goal of a warmup is to prepare someone mentally and physically for exercise/competition. Ian Jeffries, PhD, MSc, CSCS*D, NSCA-CPT*D, professor of strength and conditioning, wrote, "A well designed warm-up can increase muscle temperature, core temperature, blood flow, and also disrupt transient connective tissue bonds." He also found that warming up has the following effects on performance:

  • Improvements in rate of force development and reaction time.
  • Improvements in muscle strength and power.
  • Increased blood flow to active muscles.
  • Enhanced metabolic reactions.

Get the most out of your workout by completing a dynamic warmup - moving as you stretch and activate your muscles - before each workout.

I'm a Trainer, and These Are the 13 Upper-Body Exercises I Do For Strength and Lean Muscle

As a trainer, one thing I've noticed is that women avoid doing upper body like the plague. The two most common reasons I hear are that they're afraid of getting bulky and that they aren't strong enough.

First, bulking up won't happen because women don't produce enough testosterone, according to a 2006 review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. And as far as strength is concerned, in order to get stronger, you've got to actually train those muscles!

If your goal is to get stronger, tighter arms like Angela Bassett, Jennifer Lopez, and Jennifer Garner, ahead are a few moves I love to do. Don't do them all in a single strength session or you will be insanely sore. Instead, choose four to six push/pull exercises (an example of a push is a push-up and an example of a pull would be a pull-up) to create an upper-body workout. To build muscle, consider doing three to five sets of six to 12 reps with a weight that's between 75 to 85 percent of your one-rep max.

If You Want to Burn Fat During Your Workout, This Is What Your Heart Rate Should Be

You know working out is an essential part of any weight-loss plan: cardio torches calories and strength training builds lean muscle, which helps you burn more calories at rest. But when you hit the gym, you want to make sure you are getting the most out of your workout.

That's why your heart rate is so important; to get in an effective workout, especially with cardio, your heart rate needs to be elevated from its resting state to reap the heart-healthy and calorie-burning benefits. This is why heart-rate monitors are so popular and boutique fitness classes such as Orangetheory Fitness have built an entire business model based on your heart rate. But what does that mean? Turns out there's a simple formula you can use to find out your max heart rate and how to get into the fat-burning zone.

Cardiologist Nieca Goldberg, MD, medical director of the Joan H. Tisch Center For Women's Health at NYU Langone Medical Center, told POPSUGAR that determining your max heart rate is as simple as taking 220 minus your age. So if you're 30, your max heart rate is 190 beats per minute. To get into the fat-burning zone, you need to be at 60 to 70 percent of your max heart rate during exercise. Since each person's heart health and activity level is different, one person could reach his or her 60 percent after just a minute of exercise, while others could take longer (or shorter) to get there. Dr. Goldberg said that certain medications that affect heart rate could render that equation inaccurate; if that's the case, it's best to talk to your doctor to determine your target heart rate.

Stan Dutton, NASM-certified personal trainer and head coach at Ladder, recommends ramping that up a little bit to reap the most benefits. He said if you're doing steady-state cardio, such as running, walking, or cycling, you should aim for 70 to 80 percent of your max and stay there for a while. "In general, it will take around 18 minutes for your body to start using fat as fuel," he told POPSUGAR. If you want to do a shorter, more intense workout like high-intensity interval training (HIIT), you want to get your heart rate up to 80 to 90 percent for short bursts, then recover until your heart rate is back down to 60 percent.

As for how to measure your heart rate, it's best to use a wearable heart-rate monitor. If you don't have one available, Dr. Goldberg said you can also go off your perceived exertion on a scale from one to 10. "When you exercise at your target zone, you should feel like your heart rate is faster and your breathing has increased," she said. A one out of 10 is resting, while 10 out of 10 feels like you need to be picked up off the floor. Using this scale, you should be at a six, seven, or eight out of 10 when you are in the target zone.

The Hottest Workout of 2019 Is Coming to a Living Room Near You

Looking ahead to 2019, we think we already know exactly how everyone's going to be working out. While gyms and boutique studios will certainly still have their place, we predict the hottest workout next year will be the one in your living room.

Sure, on-demand, at-home, and live-stream workouts aren't exactly new, but they're about to be bigger, better, and more en vogue than ever thanks to a number of factors. For starters, millennials - the largest, most fitness-obsessed generation - are becoming parents by the million each year, meaning their schedules are going to get a lot busier (read: way less free time for workouts).

Aside from the megainfluence millennials have on cultural trends (particularly when it comes to fitness), we expect that the money being funneled into this new sector of the fitness industry will help to better serve smaller markets that major, trendy fitness chains have overlooked. With on-demand, in-home workouts, you don't have to wait for an Equinox or SoulCycle to open up in your town - you get access to elite trainers digitally, from the comfort of your living room. Here are 12 you'll want to choose from in 2019.
