This Mom Explained Why She Had to Stop Breastfeeding After 1 Month, and Who Are We to Judge?

After welcoming her son Jace into the world a month ago with her husband, Mike Caussin, former One Tree Hill star and country singer Jana Kramer has been enjoying the time she's spent with her bundle of joy. But as much as Jana loves being a mom of two, breastfeeding has always been a serious struggle for her. So much so that she's already stopped breastfeeding Jace after four weeks. Despite being previously shamed for not breastfeeding her daughter, Jolie, Jana opened up to Us Weekly about the challenges she's faced.

"People have questioned if I'm breastfeeding," she said. "If you don't breastfeed, you're shamed. I tried so hard the second time around because I didn't want to get re-shamed . . . I had two of my girlfriends over at my house, right after Jace, trying to get milk out of my boob, and I'm just like, bawling my eyes out and Michael's like, 'Why are you doing this?' And I said, 'Because everybody's telling me what I need to do.'"

She explained that after enlisting physical help from her friends, she knew it was time to stop. "My girlfriends were pressing on my boob trying to get milk out," she said. "So I was like, 'OK. I'm stopping. I'm done.'"

Ever since Jace switched to formula, the newborn months have been going a lot smoother. "I think it alleviates some stress for the relationship in general," Michael said. "As husbands we don't feel as helpless. We're able to take feedings. We're able to do more as opposed to just, 'OK, you've got to feed him again. Should I wake up with you or just keeping sleeping?'"

Baby Shark Has a Valentine's Day Song, So You May Want to Cover Your Ears Until Feb. 15

If your kids are fans of Pinkfong's original "Baby Shark" song and loved the Christmas version, "Santa Shark," we have some good news: there's also a Valentine's Day jam aptly named "Valentine's Day Sharks."

The themed song features the same melody, characters, and doo, doo, doos, with the addition of hearts, valentine cards, and fresh lyrics about the Feb. 14 holiday. It's a sweet way to get your kids hyped for the lovey day and will give you a slight break from the original song (if we can even call it a break).

The original "Baby Shark" is making its debut on Billboard 100's Top 40 list on Jan. 12 - will "Valentine's Day Sharks" be next?

Christian Bale Has the Most Adorable Nicknames For His Kids (Spoiler: They’ll Make You Hungry)

Celebrities have been known to give their kids unique names (ahem, Blanket, cough, Apple), but when Christian Bale, who won best performance by an actor in a musical or comedy film for the movie Vice, thanked his two children, "Banana" and "Burrito," during his Golden Globes acceptance speech on Jan. 6, I just about spit out my banana burrito my eyes nearly popped out from opening so wide. Of course, the first thing I did was google the actor's children, and I was relieved to find that they actually have very different names (that don't even start with B!).

Christian shares a 13-year-old daughter named Emmeline and a 4-year-old son named Joseph with his wife, Sibi Blazic. It's unclear as to which child is Banana and which is Burrito, but imagining Christian calling Burrito in from outside for dinner or asking Banana what they want for breakfast (banana slices, probs) is equal parts hilarious and insanely adorable.

Ahead, hear Christian thank Banana and Burrito in his acceptance speech (during which a surprising number of viewers realized the actor is, in fact, British) and see people's hilarious reactions to the nicknames.

This Genius Baby Carrier Means You'll Never Have to Put Them on Your Hip Again

I recently had to get very creative. I was in the middle of a 250-plus-mile road trip, just me and my daughter and our dog, when I had to go to the bathroom. I didn't want to carry the car seat into the bathroom with us, so I put her in her baby carrier and went to the bathroom with her like that, essentially sitting on my lap. It was weird, unusual, and, I'm guessing, one of the many things on-the-go parents come up with when strapped for time.

I wish I'd had the TushBaby Baby Carrier ($80) with me. Unlike traditional baby carriers where the child is completely strapped in like they're on a swing or amusement park ride, the TushBaby is more of an unrestricted seat. It's super easy to get them in and out (or on and off, rather), and it takes the weight off your arms and lower back. The belt fastens in a breeze, and you can place baby facing you or facing out. There are also pockets so you can store diapers, wipes, and anything else you might need. If you find baby carriers bulky and constricting, you'll definitely want to try this out.

This News Anchor's Refreshing Take on the Sex Talk Will Have Parents Taking Notes

As a 26-year-old Catholic woman whose early sex education consisted of my parents throwing a copy of American Girl's The Care and Keeping of You at me, the birds and bees discussion has always struck a nerve. But recently, mom of four and NBC News special anchor Maria Shriver addressed the topic candidly, and I've already started taking notes.

"I said, enjoy sex, enjoy your femininity," she told Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager in a segment. "It's a sacred act, but have fun with it, and enjoy your body. Enjoy being a woman." She added that: "If you went to Catholic school and you're in your 50s and 60s, you were, like, guilted and shamed about sex, and you thought you were going to hell if you had it."

Yep, that sounds familiar. When speaking to her two daughters - who are in their 20s - Maria's careful to speak about sex in a positive light.

"I think the shaming of sex is really negative, and I said, it's a beautiful thing," said Maria. "It's something to enjoy, it's something to do with somebody that you love and care about, and don't have any shame about it."

Baby Shark Is Debuting in Billboard 100's Top 40, and Who Did This?

Pinkfong's viral children's song, "Baby Shark," has officially taken the reins on the world with the latest piece of news regarding the kiddo bop. Not only are kids asking Alexa to play it on repeat, but moms are announcing their pregnancies with themed tops, kids are snuggling singing Baby Shark plushes, and now, the song is making its debut in Billboard 100's Top 40 at number 32. No, we're not kidding.

Even though the song originated in 2016, it's become eligible to chart and appears on Billboard 100's Jan. 12 list. If you somehow managed to miss the song up until now, check it out on YouTube ahead, where it has over two billion views.

As a beauty editor, I get to see, try out, and review dozens of products monthly and do it for a living. Frank Ocean Shared His Skincare Secrets, and Honestly, Everyone Should Take Note

A note to men everywhere: Frank Ocean would really like for you to stop sleeping in your day face. In a cover story for GQ's February issue, the singer shared his nighttime skincare routine and talked about why he thinks more men should wash their faces before bed.

"I feel like men just go to sleep. They may wash their face or they don't even bother - they go to sleep with the day face on," he said. "You really need to do a gentle wash and put a night moisturizer on." Retinol, Frank explained, makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, which is why you'd be better off using a night cream with the ingredient in it rather than a daytime moisturizer.

"I need the night cream because when I wake up I feel very beautiful, moisturized and ready to have people making eye contact with me, ready to look above my eyebrow, below the eyebrow," he said. "That's the life hack right there."

Frank isn't the only member of his family who pays close attention to the condition of his skin - his mother has passed along a tip or two of her own. "My mom told me years ago that you gotta get somebody to stitch the silk inside the lining of the cap so it doesn't irritate your skin, 'cause your skin is sensitive," he said, talking about knit hats. "I didn't listen to my mom, but I really do believe in a night cream."

Despite the love he has for moisturizers, Frank admits that he doesn't have all the answers, though he knows of another person who might. "It's been all these years, and Pharrell still hasn't given us the keys yet. He just says 'exfoliate,' but it's not just 'exfoliate': We need more keys."

2019's Best New Mascaras Our Editors Can't Live Without

Zac Efron Shared a Peek at His New Platinum Blond Hair, and Hot DAMN

To be frank, Zac Efron's been making me weak in the knees since his High School Musical days. But lately, he's been looking hotter than ever, thanks to a few grooming changes. Last year, the 31-year-old actor sprouted a scruffy beard that renewed my love for facial hair, and now it looks like he's kicking off 2019 by going platinum blond. New year, new hair, am I right?

On Jan. 9, Efron shared a quick peek at his bleached hairstyle while posting a rock-climbing photo on Instagram. In the snap, a few wisps of his lightened hair poke out from under a black beanie while he grips to a wall and shows off his bulging triceps (deltoids? biceps? I don't know much about muscles, OK).

This isn't the first time the natural brunette has dyed his hair. Back in 2016, he had blond highlights while filming Baywatch, though he was back to brown come 2018. Here's to hoping Efron shares more photos of his new platinum hair and beard in the very near future.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Beam With Pride at Sam Elliott's Hand and Footprint Ceremony

Fresh off their night at the Golden Globes, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper were front and center at Sam Elliott's hand and footprint ceremony in Hollywood on Monday afternoon. The trio - who all worked together on A Star Is Born - proved that their bond goes far beyond the big screen as they hugged and Gaga and Bradley proudly cheered Sam on.

During the ceremony, Bradley took the stage and gave a heartfelt speech, referring to Sam as "one of the most talented, generous, humble actors" he's ever worked with. "Acting alongside him was a dream fulfilled for me," Bradley said. "Directing Sam was and will remain one of the highest points of my career." Gaga also shared photos from the event on her Instagram stories, including one of her receiving a kiss from Sam on her forehead. "So excited to be here for Sam Elliott's hand and footprint ceremony," she wrote.

In the fourth remake of the iconic A Star Is Born film - which Bradley directed - Bradley plays a famous country singer named Jackson Maine, while Sam takes on the role of his manager and older brother, Bobby. Gaga famously acts as waitress-turned-singer Ally Maine, and her song "Shallow" with Bradley just won the Golden Globe for best original song.

Sam first made his film debut in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid back in 1969. Since then, he's solidified himself as a Hollywood mainstay, starring in a bevy of films and TV shows including Gunsmoke, Road House, The Big Lebowski, The Quick and the Dead, Tombstone, and The Golden Compass. Yep, Sam, Gaga, and Bradley have a lot to celebrate right now.

Nicole Kidman Gleefully Remembers the Exact Moment She Knew Keith Urban Was the One

It's hard not to swoon over Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban whenever the two are spotted together. The two have undeniable chemistry and one of the longest lasting relationships in Hollywood (12 years to be exact). Although they first got together back in 2005, Nicole can still recall the moment she knew she wanted to marry Keith. In a new interview with People magazine, the Destroyer actress shared the sweet gesture he made on her 38th birthday - just a few months after meeting her.

"It was my birthday, and he stood outside with gardenias at 5 a.m. on my stoop in New York," Nicole told People. "That is when I went, 'This is the man I hope I get to marry.'" She also remembered one of their most special dates, on which they rode a motorbike to Woodstock, NY, for a getaway, adding, "My kind of guy!"

It all seemed to happen rather quickly, but Nicole knew what she felt. "It was pretty intense," she continued. "I believed by that point he was the love of my life. Maybe that's because I am deeply romantic, or I'm an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, 'Oh, okay, here he is.'"

But Nicole wasn't the only one who fell quickly. Keith has also said that it was love at first sight when he met the Big Little Lies star. A year after they started dating, the couple tied the knot in Manly, Australia, and now live in Nashville with their two daughters, Sunday, 10, and Faith, 8.

From supporting each other at awards shows to making out on the beach, the spark is still very much alive for these lovebirds. See a few of their cutest photos together ahead!

If You Think You've Had a Bad Night, You Have to See the Trailer For Netflix's Russian Doll

Usually when someone has a rough night out, it means they paid for overpriced drinks somewhere, or maybe every club they went to was a bust. But the new trailer for Netflix's upcoming series Russian Doll - co-created by Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler, and Leslye Headland - suggests that there's so much worse that can happen. For instance, when a woman named Nadia (Lyonne) drags herself to a party and tries to let loose, she ends up getting hit by a cab and dying - temporarily.

She suddenly finds herself in a bizarre life and death situation when she keeps reliving the same night, and it seems to end the same way every time: in her demise. Watch Lyonne tumble down a flight of stairs, fall through cellar doors, and just generally have what could be the most bizarre night in history in the clip above. Then be sure to check out the show when it drops Feb. 1 on Netflix!

The Mysterious Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. May Appear in Captain Marvel - Here's the Secret History

This past Summer, POPSUGAR popped onto the Los Angeles set of Captain Marvel, where it was spoilers abound! But guess what? Marvel told me I can tell you whatever I want about that day! (Cue the evil, maniacal supervillain laughter.) Over the course of said visit, a lot of exciting things happened: we got to interview the biggest stars, play with a new feline friend, and even hear some powerful words from the directors. But there were also secret, not-so-overt things to spot on set. For instance, when we toured one of the elaborate spaceships they had built for the film, I noticed a box that had something rather peculiar printed on the side: "Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S."

While it could just be a fun little detail that doesn't mean anything, or perhaps an Easter egg, it turns out Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. is a pretty big deal in the Marvel universe, and there's a solid chance it'll come into play in Captain Marvel. The acronym stands for "Potential Energy Group/Alternate Sources/United States," but in layman's terms it's the governmental sector mostly dedicated to studying things that are outside the realm of current scientific understanding. Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. has previously popped up in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, but I have a feeling it'll play a big part in Captain Marvel, and here's why.

One of the other things we got to witness on set is the presence of a very important and very familiar artifact: the Infinity Stone known as the Tesseract. Although the Tesseract's exact role in Captain Marvel was unclear, I do know that Captain Marvel carries it around in a Happy Days lunch box for part of the film. It's too much of a coincidence that the Tesseract and Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. both appear in the film. Further, when you consider how Nick Fury was supposedly the head of the division in the comic books, it's hard to imagine that Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. won't have some significant role in the film.

Now, with all that explaining done, is there anything else you need to know about Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.? In the source material, Loki actually begins to influence a scientist who is studying the Tesseract. He eventually triggers it, causing a cataclysmic energy release that destroys the entire Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. facility. In the wake of the disaster, Thor takes the Tesseract back to Asgard, and the entire operation is covered up by the government. All traces are erased.

I'm not saying Loki or Thor - or both - will make an appearance in Captain Marvel but . . . wouldn't that be pretty cool?! It's not entirely out of the question, which makes me that much more excited to see Captain Marvel on March 8.

Jamie Lee Curtis Didn't Find Fiji Water Girl's Photobombing at the Golden Globes Very Funny

It sounds like Jamie Lee Curtis isn't a big fan of Fiji right now. On Tuesday, the Halloween actress shared a screenshot of an article about the popular "Fiji Water Girl," who went around photobombing celebrities on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday night, and it's safe to say that Jamie was none too pleased.

"I knew why there was a photographer poised there and I moved away as I said out loud that I didn't want to be doing advertising for either," she said in the caption. "Clearly this angle shows that I moved from her being behind me and yet from the side it still happens. The sponsors of events need to get permission from people when they get them to take their picture next to products."

Although Jamie wasn't thrilled about the meme-worthy moment, the internet had a field day with Fiji Water Girl - who was revealed to be Kelleth Cuthbert, an aspiring actress and model in her early 30s. In an interview with Glamour, Kelleth said that passing out water during the event was just a side gig in between her other careers.

Kelleth also asserted that she wasn't intentionally trying to be in every celebrity's snapshot. "I just stand where I'm told, wherever there is an opening," she told the magazine. "Sometimes you're caught between a lot of cameras, so there's a lot of photographers at different angles. You're just kind of trapped sometimes. I feel like I was looking away, but sometimes I was looking so I could move out of the way."

Evidently, Jamie isn't buying it. And you know what else she probably isn't buying any time soon? Fiji water.

12 Action-Packed TV Shows That Jack Ryan Fans Will Love

The action-packed drama of Jack Ryan proved to be one of 2018's best TV surprises. The Amazon series packed in plenty of twists and jaw-dropping moments in its first season, but none of it would have worked if not for John Krasinski's perfect everyman CIA agent performance. The man who gave the world The Office's Jim Halpert quickly revealed himself to be a capable and swoonworthy action star as Jack moved seamlessly from his desk job to taking on a deadly mission to stop a terrorist organization.

Amazon has, thankfully, ordered a second season of Jack Ryan, but while you wait for it to debut, there's no reason why you can't indulge in these quality shows that will serve up the same level of action that you've come to crave, thanks to Krasinski's brilliant character.

If This Game of Thrones Theory Is True, Bran Is Even More Important Than We Thought

It's all too easy to forget that, at its heart, Game of Thrones is a story of light versus darkness. On one side of the battle is R'hllor and his champion, Azor Ahai, or the Prince That Was Promised. On the other side is a being far more mysterious than the Lord of Light - the Great Other and his army of the dead led by the Night King. As season eight approaches, there's been plenty of discussion about who Azor Ahai reborn will be, but precious few people are questioning whether or not the Great Other will be revealed to be a physical person. In the A Song of Ice and Fire books it's revealed that the Great Other's true name is never spoken, which leads to the possibility that a big reveal could be coming. Who is the god of the cold, dark, and the night? All signs currently point to the Great Other being none other than Bran Stark, and if the hints are true, then it could be the most devastating twist of them all.

As Reddit user CappieXL points out, Bran's powers as the Three-Eyed Raven are immense. He can see all of time, and having that much knowledge dumped into his head is making Bran significantly less human than he once was. Now, the previous Three Eyed-Raven appears to have been in opposition of the Night King, which makes the idea that Bran could be the god for whom the Night King is a champion a bit hard to swallow. But let's go back to the time before Bran receives all of his powers. At one point, he sees the Night King as he's on one of his trips through time, but the Night King sees him, too, and with one touch the leader of the army of the dead knows exactly where to find the Stark boy. This implies a connection between Bran and the Night King that Bran may not fully understand.

Now, the Reddit theory posits that Bran is actually R'hllor, and the Night King is the Great Other, but if we work with the origin story presented by the show, the Night King is created by the Children of the Forest. That suggests he's an agent of the Great Other, as Melisandre states - she calls the Night King and his army the "cold children" of the Great Other. Meanwhile, R'hllor is the god of light, a figure that doesn't appear to have a physical counterpart. Instead, he has a representative to do his bidding on Earth and stop the Great Other from spreading his darkness across the world. That representative is the Prince (or Princess) That Was Promised.

Just because R'hllor doesn't have a physical counterpart, that doesn't mean the Great Other doesn't either. In fact, there's evidence in the books that Bran is working with the god of the cold, even if his service is unwitting. As the A Song of Ice and Fire wiki points out, Melisandre sees a vision in the flames of "a wooden face, corpse white, a thousand red eyes, and a boy with a wolf's head beside him." The boy with the wolf's head is believed to be Bran, a theory that is backed up by the Three-Eyed Raven (known as the Bloodraven in the books) telling him: "'Never fear the darkness, Bran.' The lord's words were accompanied by a faint rustling of wood and leaf, a slight twisting of his head. 'The strongest trees are rooted in the dark places of the earth. Darkness will be your cloak, your shield, your mother's milk. Darkness will make you strong.'"

If Bran's powers are rooted in the darkness and his ability to see all things at once, then he may not have realized that he's the Great Other yet. Or perhaps he has, and he's manipulating his mortal family into position to face off against the Night King, knowing that they'll fail. Throughout season seven, it's made pretty clear that Bran as we knew him no longer exists. He's now in touch with a power that's so large that he can see everything happening at once. That kind of power could be corrupting by nature, and it could lead to someone like Jon Snow, who is strongly hinted to be Azor Ahai reborn, having to kill Bran in order to truly stop the coming darkness. Because if Bran is the Great Other, then the Night King is simply a figurehead, which means the battle facing Jon, Daenerys, Arya, and the rest of the remaining characters is far more insidious than they could ever expect.

Want to Burn Fat and Build Muscle? Start With This Trainer's 30-Minute Total-Body Workout

If you have the goals of getting stronger, losing body fat, and building lean muscle, you're going to need to hit the weights. Traditional strength training is a great place to begin, but if you want to maximize your fat burn and increase your muscle mass, you should start incorporating conditioning workouts into your routine. Conditioning workouts combine high-intensity strength exercises with minimal rest, and they really work wonders for your body.

When I went home a few months ago, I visited my friend's gym and took one of his conditioning classes, and let me tell you, it was no joke. It challenged me the entire time and when I woke up the next, day my muscles were extremely sore - the good sore. Because the workout was so good, I asked personal trainer Q Jefferson, ISSA, USAW, owner of SWAT Fitness in Tucson, AZ, to share it with all of you. Don't be surprised if your shoulders and legs burn hours after your workout is over.

The Conditioning Workout

Be sure to complete a thorough warmup before starting the workout. Here's one of our favorites. The workout will be broken up into two parts. First, you'll do four rounds of the strength exercises without taking a break, followed by exactly two minutes of rest. Next, you'll complete four rounds of the conditioning portion without taking any rest. Q said women should have two 10- to 12-pound dumbbells and men should have two 12- to 20-pound dumbbells. Feel free to increase or decrease the weight as necessary.

Part 1: Strength
Complete four continuous rounds, taking little to no rest in between the exercises and rounds. As always, listen to your body and take breaks if necessary.

  • Lateral raise: 10 reps
  • Squat jump: 15 reps
  • Wall sit with calf raise: 20 reps
  • Alternating dumbbell punch: 20 reps (each arm)

Take two minutes of rest and then begin part two.

Part 2: Conditioning
Complete four continuous rounds, taking little to no rest in between the exercises and rounds. As always, listen to your body and take breaks if necessary.

  • Sprint: 40-60 meters (or 20-30 seconds on a treadmill)
  • Mountain climber: 15 reps (each leg)
  • High knees: 15 reps (each leg)
  • Frogger: 10 reps

Be sure to stretch and foam roll once you're finished with the workout.

Since first trying CBD oil for anxiety, I've dived into the world of using this anti-inflammatory supersupplement in a myriad of ways. And when doctors told me it was safe to take before a workout, I decided that was my next trial: how would CBD affect different workouts?

Put simply, it really doesn't. I know - anticlimactic! You were probably waiting for some kind of dramatic result and a recount of how different I felt in boot camp vs. yoga - I was too! But that's sort of the whole point with CBD, and I can't emphasize this enough: it's less about what you feel and more about what you don't feel.

CBD eliminates (or significantly lessens) feelings of anxiety and physical pain, but it doesn't add anything. Because it's from a cannabis plant (typically, but not always), people associate CBD with THC and think, "If it's marijuana related, I'm gonna get stoned." Even after explaining that CBD is the nonpsychoactive compound of cannabis, people still think it means they'll get some kind of high, just a milder or less intense one. Incorrect.

I took my CBD oils or capsules on different days before a variety of different classes: Orangetheory Fitness circuit training, a Barry's Bootcamp HIIT class, SoulCycle indoor cycling, yoga, and Bodyrok Megaformer. The biggest takeaway? No adverse side effects (I will say, however, that with yoga in particular, CBD can really help quiet your mind and turn off the anxious part of your brain so you can really get into your meditation and Savasana!).

Here's what you can expect to feel: normal! Energized. Focused. At ease. You don't feel sedated or "too chill" to crush your workout, but you also won't feel hyped up, either. You'll honestly just feel like your best, most regular self because CBD helps bring your body to its stress-free, less-inflamed homeostasis.

So if you're afraid to take CBD before you head to the gym or studio, fear not. You legitimately won't feel a thing. Plus, it'll aid in your post-workout recovery. So dive right on into your own CBD wellness regimen, and don't worry about how it's going to impact your day-to-day activities.

This Is 1 Symptom You Should Never Ignore After Sex, According to an Ob-Gyn

Sex should leave you feeling euphoric, but if your stomach has ever felt unsettled afterward, it's important that you get to the bottom of it. "It's never normal to feel nauseous after sex," Lauren Streicher, MD, an ob-gyn and medical director of Northwestern Medicine's Center for Sexual Medicine and Menopause, told POPSUGAR. That said, it does happen, usually for one of a few reasons.

The first has to do with the cervix, the gatekeeper between your vaginal canal and your uterus. "Contact with your cervix during sex - or cervical stimulation - can create a vasalvagol response in which your blood pressure and pulse drop," Dr. Streicher explained. This can cause you to feel nauseous or even to pass out. Your cervix changes throughout your cycle, dropping lower during your period, which may make it more susceptible during penetration.

You might also feel nauseous if sex is painful, which may be the result of an underlying condition. "Women with endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease may experience painful intercourse," Dr. Streicher said. Other causes range from vaginal or cervical infections to fibroids. "If you experience any type of intercourse that is painful, you should see a gynecologist," she added.

Perhaps more rarely, nausea is a symptom of a psychological condition known as sexual aversion disorder. "We don't know how often it occurs in women, but we know that it can stem from past sexual trauma, or being brought up in a very religious atmosphere where sex was 'bad,'" Dr. Streicher explained. Treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy or anxiety medication can help, so always discuss any concerns with your doctor.

I Tried Everything to Lose Weight After Having Children, but This Is What Actually Worked

I shudder to think how painfully strict I was when I wanted to lose weight after my first three pregnancies. The thing is, I honestly didn't know there was any other way to be. From the moment my babies were born, I would never permit myself to cheat on my diet. That meant no chips (which are the food love of my life), no bread, no carbs of any kind. If I slipped and ate a tortilla chip, I'd be so down on myself. But self-hatred wasn't enough of a punishment. Because then, I'd overcompensate and deny myself more, until eating became completely unenjoyable.

My exercise routine was equally as unforgiving. I'd force myself to run a certain distance, or work out at a brutal level for a set amount of time, no matter how tired or sore my body felt. There were no exceptions, whether I'd been up all night with my child, or was coming down with some illness. Given how rigidly I stuck to my diet and fitness regimen, when I didn't lose weight during a given week, I'd fall into a horribly abusive state of mind, chastising myself for this perceived failure. I never let myself celebrate until the scale reached a very specific number of pounds. Although I eventually lost all the baby weight after about nine months to a year, the journey was miserable.

It took me until after my fourth child was born to realize there is a better way to lose baby weight, and it involves being, gasp, kind to myself.

It took me until after my fourth child was born to realize there is a better way to lose baby weight, and it involves being, gasp, kind to myself. This shift was born mainly out of necessity, since I no longer have the time to be so strict in my approach to eating and exercise. My more gentle weight-loss plan started after my son arrived, and I came home to a new level of chaos. I was lucky to have time to go to the bathroom, let alone plan out a low-carb, low-fat meal. When neighbors brought over dinners, I felt grateful to shove a few bites of whatever they'd prepared in my mouth in between breastfeeding the baby, helping my preschooler on the potty, and driving two older kiddos to every activity under the sun.

My first several weeks postpartum were a blur. I ate (quickly!) when I had time, and stretched or walked if it fit into the day. Once I established more of a routine with the kids, I started slowly getting back to a more healthy diet and regular exercise routine. But not every meal is going to be salad or poached fish. Sometimes I'll shovel the children's leftover macaroni and cheese into my mouth. When this happens, I refuse to punish myself, because I know I'm doing the best I can. Likewise, I've done my very best to incorporate exercise into my day somewhere, whether it's walking the long way home after escorting my kids to school, or taking 15 minutes to practice yoga while the baby coos in his pack 'n play. On the days I only manage to carve out five minutes for a few sun salutations, I realize it is not the end of the world, but rather, reality as a mom of four.

Given my more relaxed attitude toward weight loss, it has been shocking to see the pounds fall off more quickly than when I pushed myself through brutal, 45-minute HIIT workouts and shunned every food that wasn't kale, almonds, or salmon. Just five months after having my son, I have lost nearly all of what I gained while pregnant. I still work out and eat healthy foods, but if one night dinner is chips and hummus while I bathe the kids, and I can only squeeze in a few planks and push-ups in between folding laundry, so be it.

My more kind and loving attitude toward myself has drastically lowered my anxiety around losing weight.

I believe it's my attitude toward weight loss that has made this such a different journey. My more kind and loving attitude toward myself has drastically lowered my anxiety around losing weight. I feel so much healthier and more balanced, as well as less hormonal and stressed out. Instead of hurtling numbly toward one, very specific goal, I allowed myself the space and freedom to appreciate each step along the way. When a certain pair of pants fits, even though I know I ultimately have more weight to shed, I take the time to appreciate how far I've come. But it's not only about weight loss this time. I also celebrate when I feel stronger, like when I can hold a forearm plank for 30 seconds instead of 15, or when my chair pose seems like it's infused with more ease than before.

I'm so happy I learned you don't have to mistreat yourself to see your body change. You don't have to berate and deprive yourself to get results. Sticking to a cruel diet that centers around self-denial and merciless sweat sessions born of the "no pain, no gain" mentality isn't the only way to lose weight. I'd encourage any new mama to adopt this mindful, realistic eating and exercise lifestyle that makes room for kind thoughts, self-love, gratitude, and forgiveness. Because losing weight shouldn't mean losing your sanity, too.

Exactly What You Need to Know Before Trying Orangetheory in 2019 - Including the Price

You've probably heard of, or seen an Orangetheory fitness studio. The interval-based workout franchise, which is the brainchild of physiologist Ellen Latham, is exploding and now boasts over 700 locations nationwide, from New York to Alaska.

While the name Orangetheory is cool in and of itself, there's actually quite a bit behind it. Read on to have your questions answered about how much classes cost, what's involved in each session, and what you'll ultimately get out of a membership.

What Is Orangetheory?

To get the most out of your workouts, you'll need to buy into the gym's so-called Orangetheory, which is based on the physiological theory of "Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption," or EPOC, also known as the afterburn effect. Basically, the goal of any sweat session at OTF is to train within the "Orange Zone," a target heart rate, for 12 minutes or more. Doing so is said to improve your endurance and overall fitness. With the afterburn effect, you will continue burning calories at an elevated rate even after your workout is finished.

What's Involved in a Typical Orangetheory Session?

During your one-hour interval workout at OTF, you'll be coached through both cardiovascular and strength exercises. A class might start out with treadmill, bike, or strider work, then switch to weight-training via TRX suspension machines and free weights. At the end of a sesh, OTF claims you will have burned upwards of 500 calories!

Is There Any Special Equipment Involved in Orangetheory?

The short answer is "yes." To effectively monitor your heart rate, OTF uses its own heart-rate monitors. So your Fitbit won't be compatible with their app-enabled system. Once you are equipped with either the OTBeat Flex, a heart-rate monitor worn on your forearm, the OTBeat Core, a chest strap, or the newest OTBeat Burn, which can be worn on your wrist, forearm, or bicep, your individual heart rate is displayed on screens around the room. You're only competing with yourself, however, since again, the goal is to hit the Orange Zone for at least 12 minutes of your workout. Fun incentive: for each minute you stay in the Orange Zone, you earn a "Splat point," which can be tracked via the app.

How Much Do Orangetheory Classes Cost?

Membership rates vary depending on where you live. We talked to Orangetheory, and they told us there's a range of membership packages to choose from, from Basic (4 classes for $59/month) to Elite (8 classes for $99/month) to Premier (unlimited classes for $159/month). These are just estimates, so it's best to connect with a studio rep to discuss a plan that works for you; other premium locations, such as in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Austin, and Dallas, cost more. If you live in Manhattan, you'll have to shell out $199 for an Elite membership and a cool $279 for the Premier.

No matter which level you go for, no annual contract is involved. Phew! And you can take additional classes at a discounted rate once you purchase a membership; the average cost of a class is $28. It's also worth noting the heart-rate monitors require an additional fee; between $5 and $10 for a rental, and between $69 and $109 to purchase. The good news? Anyone can try a free introductory class. And there's an app for that, too, and for booking future sessions.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

All this stuff about heart rate and points and interval training zones may sound intimidating. But the truth is, since your results are individually tracked and assessed, Orangetheory classes are designed for all fitness levels. The classes are led by coaches who are there to motivate you to be your personal best and reach your fitness goals. No matter where you start, OTF claims you will see increased energy in one month, "amazing results" in three months, and the start of a "new you" in six. Sounds like it's worth a try!

Jumpstart Your New Year's Resolution With This Beginner's 4-Week Strength Training Program

Now that you've decided to start lifting weights, you're probably wondering where exactly you should begin. We know the weight room can seem intimidating, which is why we created this guide to get you acclimated to lifting weights. This program is designed to first and foremost introduce you to weightlifting, and second help you build lean muscle - and yes, you'll lose fat as well.

You'll work out three times a week for four weeks. Ideally we'd like you to do the strength sessions with a lighter activity day in between (swimming, yoga, etc.), but we do understand that life happens, so move them around to fit your schedule! The first two weeks will be very simple but still challenging. On weeks three and four, the sets and reps will increase. A sample week will look like the following:

  • Monday: Week 1, Workout A
  • Tuesday: Foam roll for 15 minutes
  • Wednesday: Week 1, Workout B
  • Thursday: 20-minute easy run
  • Friday: Week 1, Workout C
  • Saturday: Hour long walk
  • Sunday: Yoga

For the exercises that require weight, start with either 7.5-pound or 10-pound dumbbells. If this feels too light or too heavy, make necessary adjustments. It's more important to master the movement than to move carelessly with heavier weights. Don't forget to warm up and cool down after every workout. For your warmup you can do an easy run or dynamic exercises to activate your muscles like butt kicks, high knees, plank saws, and glute bridges.

Since you're being more active, you will more than likely notice that you have a larger appetite. Listen to your body and fuel it with nutritious foods like vegetables, protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats. Drink lots of water and be sure to replace the electrolytes you've lost with a sports drink or electrolyte tablets.

We Asked a Sleep Doctor How to Fall Asleep Faster, and His Solution Is Snacking (Bless)

Drifting off to sleep can be super hard some nights, but what if we told you that getting a bite to eat could help you fall asleep faster? It's true, as long as you choose an evening snack that's rich in melatonin.

"Melatonin is the chemical that makes us sleepy at night. Light - either from the sun or your laptop - suppresses melatonin," W. Christopher Winter, MD, author of The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broke and How to Fix It, told POPSUGAR. That means you should power down your devices in the evening, but supplementing with melatonin can also help improve sleep and combat insomnia. That said, taking it in the over-the-counter form you find in pharmacies may not be safe, particularly over the long-term. Instead, try one of these three melatonin-packed snacks:

  • Walnuts: "In addition to having high levels of tryptophan (an amino acid that aids in melatonin production), walnuts also have a unique form of melatonin in high levels," Dr. Winter said.
  • Tart cherries: "Tart cherries have been shown to produce a surge in melatonin that can be helpful with sleep initiation," Dr. Winter explained. A 2017 pilot study found that those who drank one cup of tart cherry juice twice a day for two weeks increased sleep time by 84 minutes compared to those in the placebo group.
  • Kiwis: The fuzzy fruit can seriously help you fall asleep. In a small study, people who ate two kiwis an hour before bed for four weeks decreased the amount of time it took for them to fall asleep by 35 percent.
